The Political Philosophy of Karl Raimund Popper
Karl Raimund popper (1902 to 1994) was an influential philosopher of science, who philosophized
about society, in much the same way he philosophized about science in a critical spirit. His personal
experience, as an Austrian Jew in the days of the Nazi Anschluss (meaning link up or annexation in
the German language), provided him a wealth of firsthand experience and insights into the nature of
totalitarian governments.
At a point in popper s life he was an enthusiast of Marxist socialism, but that enthusiasm was short
lived as he soon began to develop a skeptical turn of mind towards Marxist socialism. He questioned
the rationale in the sacrifice of human life which communism found necessary to its cause, after the
leaders of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also postulated a broad range of social teleological theories generally called historic ism in
which society was forced into accepting a unilateral version of reality which was wholly certain as
to it present state and future outcomes.
In the defense of the liberal tradition in politics Popper developed certain philosophical positions,
to counter the notions by those philosophers who advocated such illiberal philosophical ideas that
could only lead to the creation of closed societies for the world. The philosophical positions which
popper advanced included a twin edged liberalism , in the sense of peacefully tolerating the
proponents of closed societies in free societies, as long as they stuck to verbal arguments only, and
social engineering by a piecemeal or (gradual) approach to social reforms.
Popper considered the west and the rest of the world endangered by the influence of such thought
that promoted a historicist or collectivist frame of social thought. This sort of frame for social
thought he argued could only lead to the establishment of authoritarian and totalitarian forms of
government, which would in turn suppress and constrain the liberties and lives of people in the
long run.

Childhood Is An Exceptional And Progressive Time Of...
Childhood is an exceptional and progressive time of physical, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional
development (Cozolino, 2010). The brain and its biological stress system are genetically
programmed and influenced by early experience. Trauma has developmental consequences on
children. Developmental traumatology research is systemic investigation of the psychiatric and
psychobiological impact of the overwhelming and chronic interpersonal violence on the developing
child (De Bellis, 2001, p. 539). It combines frameworks from developmental psychopathology,
developmental neuroscience, and stress and trauma research (De Bellis, 2001). Child maltreatment
experiences can be defined as neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessing of domestic
violenceor community violence and these may be the most common causes of interpersonal
traumas in children and adolescence (De Bellis, 2001).
Child abuse experiences may cause delays or deficits in a child s ability to achieve age appropriate
behavioral, cognitive, and emotional regulation (Cozolino, 2010). When the child caregiver
relationship is the source of the trauma the attachment relationship is severely compromised as 80%
of maltreated children develop insecure or avoidant attachment patterns (Smith, 2012).
Consequences of a disrupted attachment include impairments in bio psychosocial competencies
including increased susceptibility to stress and difficulty focusing attention; inability to regulate
emotions and behaviors can

The Influence Of Modern Art
Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible
way? After all, these wealthy individuals are spending their hard earned bills, hundreds upon
thousands upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn t make any sense to anyone but the
maker. This could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly grimey buyers are making our
economy go down the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is a very inspiring investment,
but the fact that these artists that spit out works that don t put any effort or passion into it are
making the green show more readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be
affecting our economy with their meaning leading to quick production, their odd cult worship
making it understandable to those who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of
sales types where the money goes and how it is made.
How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole
of Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is very hard to comprehend as far as the rational
mind goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois,
studied the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. Hinrichs claims that More than any
preceding artistic style or aesthetic, Modernism epitomizes the emergence of a deliberate cultural
and social agenda. (Pg 22). Most of the art is made from Modern idea and events, making them

Consequentialism, By John Stuart Mill Essay
Consequentialism is a broad ethical theory that describes one s actions to be good or bad depending
solely upon the consequences of those actions. The distinguishing element of this theory from
others is that the action itself has no value without analyzing the expected consequences, as
explained by William H. Shaw in Consequentialism , ...when it comes to rightness or wrongness,
nothing matters but the results of our actions (Shaw 28). Then the question is, what exactly does it
mean for a consequence to be deemed good ? Utilitarianism, a more specific form of
consequentialism, answers this by describing a good action to be one that brings about the most
happiness or well being for everyone. John Stuart Millstates, The creed which accepts as the
foundation of morals utility or the greatest happiness principle holds that actions are right in
proportion as they tend to promote happiness: wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of
happiness (Mill 7). This theory seems simple when applied to everyday situations. However, it
can become tricky when applied to more complex, multi faceted, situations. Obviously there are
differentiating levels of happiness. For example, in a situation where it seems there may be no
such thing as a happy outcome, the anticipated consequence that is deemed to be the lesser of two
evils would be perceived to bring about the most well being compared to the other choice. This
theory may also seem difficult because it is based on

Sex Education Should Be Taught At School
Sex education can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century. Chicago s public schools
introduced the Nation s first formal sex education program which has raised controversy throughout
the years. Many believe that talking about sex in the classroom raises the initiation of such
behavior. Others believe that ignoring the subject keeps teens in the dark which leads them to make
unsafe decisions when they become sexually active. Whether it is at school or at home, teens must
be taught about the dangers of unprotected sex as well as abstinence. Being unaware of protection
puts teens at risk of becoming pregnant or contracting an STD or STI. Sex educationmust be taught
at school and it must be taught right, without lies or myths and without giving teens the idea that
the only perfect time for them to become sexually active is when they are married. If sex education
was taught at school instead of abstinence only education, it would help young adults make correct
decisions when becoming sexually active as well as helping them make wise choices that can affect
their future.
From the beginning of the 1900 s, sex education became a topic that till this day will raise
controversy. As it started to be introduced in more schools, conservative groups began protesting to
ban sex education. They believed children should not be taught such behavior since it was a topic
that should be discussed at home; at a parent s choice. When the 1980 s AIDS epidemic began, these

Shinkolobwe Uranium Mine
Uranium opened up with an historical account of a uranium mine in the African Congo named
Shinkolobwe. He quite visually discussed his trip to the Congo and the mine itself. To add
background information, the author recounted the history of the Congo, from its early days under
the imperial power of King Leopold to its present status of disarray and corruption. In the late 19th
century, Congo became the heart of the rubber sap industry, and its poor residents were forced into
slavery. Quotas of rubber sap were established, and workers who failed to meet those goals had their
limbs severed. When King Leopold passed, the Dutch government took power. Under this regime
change, Congo now started to enter the mining industry. Congo was actually very rich in those
resources, and mines started popping up throughout the country.... Show more content on

However, a side project, later coined uranium, was often tossed aside as junk. The book will go on
to discuss its rise to fame and value, but it did state there that the uranium from the Shinkolobwe

powered the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following another regime change,
the Shinkolobwe pit was filled in with concrete to avoid falling into the wrong hands. Although

Marie de France s Lanval : A New Model for Gender Roles in the Medieval Romance Genre
Historically, Medieval women had little agency or control over their lives. Parents arranged
marriages for political alliances and while the romantic compatibility of the engaged couple was
almost never considered, Medieval society often prioritized men s sexual preferences. Marie de
France comments on women s lack of agency and the unfulfilling nature of these marital alliances
in her unconventional lai, Lanval. Her curious inversion of power dynamics skews the traditional
gender roles and reveals flaws within the Medieval ideal of courtly romance. In particular, Marie de
France s Fairy Queen starkly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to fully comprehend the subversive female subject, it is imperative to explore how Lanval s
failure to fit the romantic hero archetype renders him more conventionally feminine. Despite his
noble lineage and inherent bravery that aligns him with Medieval models of knighthood, the
narrator places more emphasis on Lanval s defects and insufficiencies. In particular, Lanval is so
unmemorable that King Arthur forgets to financially support Lanval:
Women and land / He shared out with generous hand / To all but one who d served. Lanval
heOrme 2 forgot: no man helped his recall (Marie de France). Lanval s strong financial dependence
on the king (and later the Fairy Queen) liken him to an unmarried womanНѕ he is reliant on
powerful alliances for monetary support and validation of status. In fact, Marie de France paints
Lanval as quite pitiable and without the capability to independently solve his hopeless situation.
He is so morose that he relinquishes his horse, his last financial asset and visible sign of status, to
wander the forest and think of his sad plight, He saw nothing to bring delight (Marie de France).

Descriptive Essay On The Osprey
The Osprey
As I walked on a sandy path, I took a moment to admire the scenery. The mountains and their
snow capped tips looked so mighty and big, that I felt small and inconspicuous. The pine trees
swayed back and forth, and pronghorn pranced on the brilliant green grass. Everything seemed so
beautiful. Bison wallowed across the cold rocks as the geysers spouted hot water. It was an animal
s paradise.I tried to imagine the whole world being this peaceful and spectacular. The misty
morning air tickled my face as I started to strut down the path again.
I was in Yellowstone National Parkand that morning my family had woken up very early. I kept
my eyes wide open just in case I could spot some wildlife out of the corner of my eye. Everything
was gorgeous, but now that our trip was coming to an end, I had seen almost everything, and quite
frankly, I was getting a little bored.
When I had arrived though everything was new and mysterious. It felt like a different world. There
were animals I had never seen before and things that would never have happened in California. I
had to see everything.
When I did though, I started to tap my feet and twiddle my thumbs. The same old misty air, big
mountains and bisons, was just not interesting more. Except I had not seen an osprey yet. It was
like a lightbulb went off in my head, a spark of imagination. Thinking about the past gave me ideas
for the future. If I just had the chance to see the bird, it would make our trip that much

Morehead State University. There is a need on campus to find ways of helping African American
males connect with others. Whether it be in the classroom or outside the classroom. If I were to
continue this study, one area I would think would be interesting is to examine the results of
students who lived on campus, and those who were solely online students. The online learners
would likely give a different perspective on the social viewpoints of college. This study sought to

There was one graduate who identified himself as an online student. Since the assumption was
made that the students would be affected by social and academic in their persistence, on line
students may have a disadvantage by not having the connections of a fraternity or being a part of a
team as a support system to be successful. Another aspect that could be analyzed is the persistenace
from students who started at MSU as freshmen, and compare that information with students who
transferred from community college or other institutions. Some of the graduates stated they believe
their determination to persist to graduation was due to having a mentor to help them throughout
their college experience. A way to further this study could be to study the experiences of graduates
who had mentors versus those who did not have a mentor and evaluate how this had an impact on
their persistence to graduate. As a part of the study for this capstone, one one of the tenets for the
African American Male Theory was used. Since the AAMT is a theoretical framework that can be
used to articulate the position and trajectory of African American boys and men in society (Bush

Economic Analysis of the Airline Industry Introduction The airline industry is one that is both
costly and necessary to the economy. Costly because of the funding provided by the government,
recent layoffs; which has a hand in rising inflation, dealing with negative externalities and high
security risks; necessary because the ease and speed of air travel is needed to keep countries

This is because air travel is not the only means of transportation. A person would like the speed
and convenience of travel by air, but other transportation alternatives exist. Air travel is both a
luxury and a necessity depending on the purpose of its use. For the purpose of vacationing or
visiting friends and family, air travel could be considered a luxury, but for the individual or
company who relies on the speed of air travel to complete business transactions, it would be
considered a necessity. The supply and demand of air travel is impacted by several factors. Air
travel is a normal good. The demand for air travel can diminish slightly because there are other
means of safer transportation available. The demand can also decrease if it becomes too
unaffordable. Consumers with a higher income are able to spend more time vacationing with the
use of air transportation. Air travel can be substituted with other forms of transportation if the
income of the consumer decreases. The price elasticity of supply for the Airline industry
however, is inelastic because even with the shifts in demand for air travel, which were caused by
events such as the 9/11 attacks and high gasoline prices, the rates and fares for air travel are able to
be set without being effected by those events. The airline industry provides a transportation

Family Across The Sea Essay
The black experience, as seen in the existence of the Gullah Geechie community in the Georgia
Lowcountry, stands as proof of the existence and preservation of Africanism in the New World.
Cultural artifacts of that preservation include an active and surviving language, as studied by
Lorenzo Dow Turner, the private use of basket names, the making and use of fanner baskets as
objects of art and function, a continuance of the knowledge and skills required for growing and
harvesting rice, oral transmission of that knowledge, and the use of rice and greens in both African
and the Lowcountry Gullah Geechie cuisines. The documentary, Family Across the Sea (1991),
recognizes these similarities as direct links to the significant impact of 18th century slave trade on
African Americans, with emphasis on its documented connection to the Lowcountry.
The filmic explanation that ... the story of this connection begins with the land; land which is
strangely similar on the coasts of both the southeastern United States and that of Sierra Leone,

Analysis Of The Hero s Journey
Small or big, everything we do in life is part of our journey. Reg Harris The Hero s Journey
describes the voyage one takes throughout life to grow and change as a person. He breaks the
journey down into eight steps leading to the return. It starts out as a goal that isn t always easy
to reach, one goes through hardship and personal doubts only to succeed and become a better
person. An example of this journey can be found in the movie, Troy through the character
Achilles. Achilles is a strong fearless warrior in the movie, Troy who goes through The Hero s
Journey and ends up with a change of heart. As the movie begins we are introduced to Achilles
as a fierce and strong warrior, fearing no one. He begins the first step of Harris journey, also
known as the call, when Odysseus goes to talk to him. Odysseus visits Achilles to ask him to
fight in the war in Troy. He describes the war as great and in need of their best warrior, the
perfect invitation into his journey. The second step in Harris journey is the threshold, where we
encounter obstacles and doubts. One of the main examples of threshold in Achilles life would be
his mother. When Achilles brings up that he has been invited to war his mother gives him two
options. Those options are to stay where he is a live a normal long life with a wife children and
happiness where not many would remember his legacy, or to go to war and possibly die fighting
but be remembered for years to come. At that point Achilles started

Jude s Death On The Cross Essay
Jude was the younger half brother of Jesus, born of Mary and Joseph. During the life and
ministry of Jesus Christ, Jude and his other brothers openly expressed doubt in the divinity of
Jesus (John 7:3 8), but Jude did eventually became a believer after Jesus death on the cross (Acts
1:14). The epistle of Jude is written to a general audience of Christians, who are called beloved in
God the Father and kept for JesusChrist (v. 1). Jude begins by saying that He had planned to write
about common salvation, but there were more pressing matters that he had to attend to. Jude s self
professed purpose for writing his epistleis to rally his readers to contend for the faith against false
teachers who might draw believers away from the truth (v. 3). Jude s method is twofold; he
identifies the false teachers who have infiltrated the church, and he urges the church not to be
swayed into apostasy by their blasphemous teachings.
First and foremost, it is important to accurately determine a timeframe in which Jude was
written. Jude s discussion of the false teachers in verses 4 18 closely resembles 2 Peter 2:1 3:4, and
many scholars argue that Peter s second epistle predates Jude for a number of reasons. The first of
these reasons is Peter s anticipation of false teachers to come (2 Pet. 2:1 2, 3:3), which
chronologically speaking comes before the arrival of the false teachers, which Jude vv. 4, 11 12, 17
18 deals with. The second piece of evident is found in Jude 1:17 18. Here,

Anatomy Of The Pulmonary, Coronaries And Veins
Anatomy Of The pulmonary, Coronaries and aorta arteries
Gross anatomy
The heart and great vessels are roughly in the middle of the thorax, being surrounded laterally and
posteriorly by the lungs and anteriorly by the sternum and the central part of the thoracic cage. The
heart acts a twofold, self modifying suction and pressure pump, the parts of which work in union
to push blood to all parts of the body. The right half of the heart (right heart) gets ineffectively
oxygenated (venous) blood from the body via the SVC and IVC and pumps it through the
pulmonary trunk to the lungs for oxygenation. The left half of the heart (left heart) gets well
oxygenated (arterial) blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins and pushes it into the aorta for
circulation to the body (Fig.1) (Moore and Dalley, 2006).
Fig.1. The heart and great vessels (Quoted from Shah, 2005)
I Anatomy of pulmonary arteries:
The lungs get blood by means of two sets of arteries: pulmonary arteries and bronchial arteries.
Deoxygenated blood goes through the pulmonary trunk which separates into a left pulmonary artery
that enters the left lung and a right pulmonary artery that enters the right lung. Return of the
oxygenated blood to the heart happens by method of the four pulmonary veins which deplete into
the left atrium (Tortora and Nielsen, 2012). The fundamental divisions of the trunk are the right and
left pulmonary arteries. The right pulmonary artery goes in front of the

Theories And The Underlying Processes Essay
theories and the underlying processes have a huge bearing on the subject. These psychological
theories are more than theoretical in nature and can thus be applied practically. Indeed, through
these theories, there is a growing belief that human behavior can be predicted using certain
environmental factors. As psychologists continue to inquire more into human behavior, it
becomes clearer than certain aspect of the social, biological, psychosocial, and technological
environments have the biggest sway on people s choice of actions. Often, human beings
participate in a task because of the value they will derive from it, especially in terms of its
economic and social importance. Social cognitive theory is of the thought that what a person
perceives as right and its significance influences a course of action. A person s behavior is
greatly influenced by what he or she believes to be right or wrong. Most importantly, their actions
are influenced by the benefits they accrue from them. For this reason, the subjective probabilities
that affect the choice of actions can be used to determine a person s next actions and ultimately,
their behavior. In his theory, Rotter explains that learning and cognitive processes combine to
determine people s reactions to occurrences in life. Through Rotter s social learning theory,
behavior can be predicted using people s responses to life s occurrences. The social cognitive
approach focuses on the crucial nature of cognitive processes in the

independence. However, the major change came economically after independence Guatemala
focused on the production of coffee. Coffee became their main cash crop, and foreign investment in
coffee increased.
Coffee then began to be produce at a large scale, large masses of lands were required to cultivate
it. As a result many of the indigenous people who owned land in the countrysides lost their
lands. The government support if the production of coffee, drove off the indigenous off their
lands. The masses of lands then required for people to work the lands. As a result of being driven
off their lands, and not having means of production of crops to sell and to have to eat, the
indigenous were driven to work and cultivate the lands they once owned. The indigenous became
dependent on this type of employment. The work of indigenous people cultivating land developed
a complex system of labor into three types of classes as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Capitalism brought in a large frequency of monopolization of these modernized and industrialized

All Connected
All Connected The government is watching your every move, listening to every word, keeping
you in line. One wrong move and you re done for. 1984 is a novel that focuses on four main
people and is set in the future from when it was written. The government has total control over
everything you do and if you slip up it could mean vaporization. Four people that don t really know
each other enter into each other s lives and things get interesting. Winston Smith is the first
character that comes into play. He works for the Ministry of Truth, editing history. He has a sense
of what is wrong and right. He knows he must follow the government, however, he has deeper
thoughts of a revolution. Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is
granted, all else follows. Winston is a very smart individual. He knows, feels, that he is right in
two plus two making four despite being told that it equals five. He wants a rebellion and is against
what the government does. When he s editing history in the department, sometimes he fudges it up
a bit. Next comes Julia. Julia is a love interest for Winston, in fact, they have an affair. She works in
the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. She is a tall dark haired woman. She rebels

Importance to Be on Time in the Military Essay example
It is important to be on time, both in the Army and in the civilian sector, for multiple reasons.
Among these reasons, the ones that stand out to me the most are unprofessionalism, being fired,
receiving adverse disciplinary actions, and failing your co workers/comrades. Being late or
tardy to work can cause not only yourself but everyone at your place of employment problems.
When being late or tardy, you are showing that you are not a professional. It can also be assumed
that you do not care or respect your job the way you should or need to. When your employer
begins to think that you are careless with your job or don t care about your job they can decide

know that when I failed to show up for duty that I not only showed lack of responsibility but also
a lot discipline. I could write this essay and fill it with tons of excuses as to why I was late to my

behind because they were too busy trying to figure out where I was and what I was doing to
cause me not to be at my place of duty. Not to mention that when everything is running behind and

Pros And Disadvantages Of Automation
Automation is a beautiful endeavor. Much like the tools of the past, automation makes our lives as
people easier. Today s technologies allow for more work to be done in less time, for less money,
and with less human effort. Jobs that are in the inconvenient middle of being too repetitive to be
interesting, but too complex for conventional computers to handle can now be automated
seamlessly seamlessly in ways that are more efficient and safe than in ways humans can manage. A
potent example would be cooking. Cooking is an occupation that requires precise measurements of
both timeand material. If you cook something for too long of a time, it burns up or is
overcooked. If you cook something for too short of a time, it becomes undercooked. This may
be a problem for humans, but this is far from one for computers. The only input a computer
needs is the perfect example to do the task perfectly. The many benefits of switching to
automated operation makes it tempting for business owners to switch to it. However, a problem
arises when one too many business owners decide to automate everything. The root of this
problem stems from the nature of the free market. Money circulates around the country from
buyer to seller, or in our case, from employer to employee. The employer fulfills the want or need
of a client that they cater to. To better serve these clients, they hire employees to either do more of
the work, or research how to do the work better. In return, the employees are given

Psychopathy Is a Necessary Study for the Criminal System...
Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the
most important clinical constructs of the 21st century (Hare, Clark, Grann, Thornton, 2000, p.
623). Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred
socially deviant behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to
possess are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive, selfish, aggressive, lacking
remorse, shame, feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors

to accept responsibility for ones own actions, revocation of conditional release, criminal versatility,

personality features, such as lacking guilt or remorse, or a lack of empathy, while the other

The War on Drugs and U.S. Foreign Policy Essay
Introduction
The War on Drugs has been a common phrase in the United States for many decades. What
exactly does this mean and how does it shape U.S. foreign policy? The War on Drugs can be
defined as the systematic and aggressive policy that is determined to undermine and stop the flow
of illegal drugs into the United States. This policy is backed by several U.S. institutions including
the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement
Administration (DEA), U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Customs. Also, included in this list
are the numerous local law enforcement agencies across the country.
The U.S. government has instituted the following ways for enforcing its foreign drug ... Show more

This refers to the elimination of drug crops while they are still being grown. The U.S. has used
this policy in several South American countries as a means to limit drug trafficking before it has a
chance to develop. However, significantly reducing crops has not always led to decreasing drug
trafficking. Reduction of drug crops in one country may lead to increased production in another.
This is likely to happen when one country becomes the focus of an eradication effort, while another
country can increase its production to fill in the void. If there is one thing that the world market
can produce, it is its high demand of illegal drugs. The Drug Policy Alliance gives cites a specific
instance verifying the problems that can be associated with eradication procedures. During the
mid 1990s, eradication efforts in Bolivia and Peru created incentives to grow coca in Columbia.
While Peru experienced a 66% reduction in coca cultivation and Bolivia experienced a 53%
reduction, coca cultivation in Columbia doubled. In addition, more potent strains of coca have
been developed, leading to higher yielding coca crops. This example shows the adverse effects of
the policy of eradication. Main Cocaine Producing Countries
Finally, the last way that the United States enforces is foreign policy on drugs is legislative
reform. Legislative reform entails the laws passed to combat drug trafficking. The laws that will

The Value of Nature to Humans
The Value of Nature Humans project the value of nature because humans are the only beings that
are able to produce rational thoughts and are therefore, the only beings that value. Since humans are
the only beings that value, they are inherently the only things that determine the value of other
things. In addition to my main thesis, I will address where the valuein nature originates by
explaining the disjoint relationship between humans and non humans. Expanding on my thesis, I
will prove the projection view is correct by showing that all arguments for the recognition view
appeal to projection. Projection, meaning, humans project value on to nature rather than
recognition, meaning, humans recognize the intrinsic value of nature. The value of nature is a
contentious issue that not only concerns environmental ethicists, but also everyday people around
the world. As our world becomes more technologically dependent, it seems that we are becoming
less concerned with nature. In deciding the future of our planet, it is important that we explore the
value of nature and the consequence of destroying it. I will reference and utilize quotes by Holmes
Rolston III from his novel, A New Environmental Ethics, as I evaluate the Euthyphro Problem as it
applies to the value of nature. The recognition view of the value nature articulates that humans
recognize the intrinsic value of nature. Where does the basis for this argument originate? Rolston
defends the idea that if an organism performs

Unactuality In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood
It is a fact that Truman Capote published his bestselling novel, In Cold Blood, in January 1966. It
is a fact that Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith confessed to, and were hanged for
the murder of the Clutter family. However, it may not be true that Capote s new form of novel, the
nonfiction novel, is entirely factual as he claims in numerous interviews. Instead Capoteuses a
creative interpretation of events to manipulate the characters and to advance the narrative of In
Cold Blood. Despite Capote s desire to write a book that was completely factual, the addition of
information intended to influence the audience, the characterization of Perry, and fabrication of
certain events all lead to a book that is less than factual. The novel, In Cold Blood, is Truman
Capotes first attempt to deviate from the traditional mold of the novel, towards a fact based work
of literature, that he called a nonfiction novel. Capote describes his intent with In Cold Blood to
The Saturday Review when he says that I got the idea of doing a really serious big work it
would be precisely like a novel, with a single difference: every word of it would be true from
beginning to end (Voss). In this interview with The Saturday Review, Capote expresses that In
Cold Blood would be written as a record of fact, juxtaposing the traditional novel that is based on
the creation of events and of characters. However, a novel that is free of the creation of events and
certain character traits seems

Essay on The Presence of an Iceberg in A Clean,...
Presence of an iceberg in A clean, well lighted place
From the short story, A clean, well lighted place , Hemingway has comprehensively used his
theory of omission. The first part where this theory is used is in the definition of the characters
present in the story. The old man, who is the first character, is brought out with lots of omissions
regarding his details (Hemingway 1). The old man is only described as old and deaf. In addition, it
is stated that he enjoyed coming out at night when it was quieter and could drink until the waiters
became restless and ordered him out.
By looking at the old man, the reader can easily come up with many conclusions and symbolic
interpretations. Firstly, the old age is a symbolic representation of ... Show more content on

The old man was therefore psychologically affected by the loneliness at home. Despite the wealth
that is later highlighted by the waiters in their conversations, the old man cannot seem to find
solace and hence the reason for frequent visit to the cafГ©. His quest is peace and company. This
therefore explains why the writer takes the old man to a cafГ©, rather than to a bar.
While alcohol is sold in all these places, the writer brings the old man to a cafГ©, due to its
cleanliness, good arrangement and light. This illustrates that the old man opts for the cafГ© due to
its calm nature, compared to the bars, which are noisy, violent, and disorderly (Morris and Owens
4). The ruthlessness associated with the bars makes it an unsuitable place for the old man and he
thus opts to drink in the cafГ©.
By omitting his hearing capability, the writer develops the concept of loneliness further. The old
man cannot even get to hear from the community. He was therefore alienated from many realities
and the world was far away from him. Through this, the writer clearly brings about the concept of
despair. The perceived lack of an influence to commit suicide was intentionally omitted by the
writer in order to give the reader a broader approach to the problem. If the writer had stated the
reason that prompted the old man to attempt suicide, the reader could not have developed a broader
understanding of the

Existentialism And Its Impact On Society Essay
Jean Paul Sartre once said man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. The implications of
this statement and his entire school of thought had a profound effect on society as a whole. SГёren
Kierkegaard is often thought to be the first proponent of existentialism but never used the term as a
self describer and was categorized as an existentialist posthumously. Sartre derived his inspiration
from Martin Heidegger and embraced the term, but he was hardly the only one to flirt with such
thinking. Many philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir, Maurice Merleau
Ponty, Albert Camus and Fyodor Dostoyevsky were also influential existentialists. Although this
branch of philosophy theorizes over many facets of human existence, one of its most innovative
proposals was the true meaning of life. Scholar Frederick Copleston explains that Sartre believed
that what all existentialists have in common is the fundamental doctrine that existence precedes
essence. As a result, each individual is free of preconceived notions assigned to them by society
and religion. Everyone must be responsible for creating their own values and determining a
meaning to their own lives. Existence precedes essence is a central theme in existentialism. This
notion makes every person liable for their own actions instead of placing the blame on someone or
something. As a result, every individual has the freedom to do what he or she chooses but must
always assume responsibility instead

For Sartre, the moment Eve decides she will kill Pierre , when his mind is lost to his dementia,
is the most sane thing Eve does. She has been faced with a truth, Pierre is in sane without any
possibility for recovery, and she takes that moment and makes a choice to end his suffering and
hers. She is not hiding from the choice and is taking responsibility for that action. Hence in
sanity is Pierre s life and self identity, but Eve has another identity to explore. Eve can t merely
state I am the wife of a mentally ill husband, but I am Eve now what am I going to do. What I am
I to do with this external force and mend it with a choice of action? This is also why for Sartre
close relationships are doomed to failure.
In order for love, friendship to occur your desire to please the other will undoubtedly cause a
friction with your inner self. At some point you must deny your desire for the other, or deny your
humanity. Also the object in life, your choice, and the others choice must be mended
harmoniously. Otherwise, and in most cases relationships are doomed to failure. Hell is other
people (Sartre) She is unable to leave the dark apartment; her relation with parents, friends, and
people is strained; she is no longer a part of the world.

General Douglas Macarthur s Duty, Honor Country
In the 1960 s, America s intense nationalism was shattered by the horrors brought about by two
consecutive World Wars. Thousands of Americans died fighting in what they saw as another man s
war, an eastern war. America experienced the pain of war and sought to avoid experiencing it ever
again. But the world feared a newer, and more dangerous threat after the great wars: communism.
When America s government again wanted to become involved in the other man s war, many
young men and their families protested vehemently. When General Douglas MacArthur received an
award from Westpoint, his acceptance address, entitled Duty, Honor, Country, morphed into a call
to arms to the students, future military leaders, a reminder of the three ideals that... Show more

He knows that, with the memory of the bloodshed and loss of World War Two not far from their
minds, many could be reluctant to march to war yet again. But instead of shy away from this fact,
he makes this concession to the men, saying that, The soldier, above all others, prays for peace...for
he must bear the deepest wounds of war (MacArthur). The General knows that to ignore this
sentiment of the soldiers would be to lose their faith entirely. The government was far from eager to
leap into conflict again, but believed that fighting against communism wherever it surfaced was
crucial to stopping it, and so they played on the nascent fear of Russia in order to justify the wars in
Korea and Vietnam (The Cold War Museum). MacArthur relies also on the patriotism of the
American soldiers and their pride in their country to push them to fight. He tells the cadets that they,
stand as the Nation s war guardian, as its lifeguard from the raging tides of international conflict, as
its gladiator in the arena of battle (MacArthur). With American sentiments strong after World War 2,
MacArthur trusts that their pride in country and sense of duty will be strong enough to push them
into combat. MacArthur also knows that the men have pride not only in their country, but

Theme Of Conflict In Go Set A Watchman
Although Harper Lee uses other literary elements, she is notorious for using conflicts in her
novels. One great example of hers would be To Kill a Mockingbird. The main conflict within the
novel is finding justice for a negro who was accused of raping a white woman. The prequel to To
Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman, also showcases conflicts important to the storyline.
Throughout the novel, Go Set a Watchman, Harper Lee uses a variety of different types of conflict
which contributes to the theme that no matter how societal views are changing, one should not lose
their personal values and individual voice. The first area of conflict Harper Lee portrays is character
versus society. She shows this conflict through the main... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The NAACP is standing up for colored people in the South who have always lacked the
opportunities white people have. Although Atticus may not agree with the NAACP, it is good
for the organization to have a strong voice among a sea of disapproval to support what they see
as equality. A final type of conflict in the novel is character versus self. Jean Louise is a
character who does not even have her own separate conscience until the end of the book. Her
entire life has been spent shadowing her father s thoughts and values. Dr. Finch, Jean Louise s
uncle, explains, You had to kill yourself, or he had to kill you to get you functioning as a
separate entity (325). After Jean Louise moved to New York, she started to become more and
more independent. When she came home, she was forced to see that her values and her father s
values no longer line up. She had to find the courage within herself to tear her father down at the
end of the novel in order to benefit herself in the long run. By the end of the novel, Jean Louise
was able to discover her own values and voice and resolve the inner turmoil she endured with the
help of a changing society. Harper Lee s characters had to overcome many types of conflicts in her
novel, Go Set a Watchman. Jean Louise first needed to learn how to face the challenge of adapting
to the changing societies in her life. Although Jean Louise was open to the change of society,
Atticus refused to lose his voice

Former President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., gave the world two of the

his infamous Inaugural Address. Not even heavy snow fall could deter JFK s inaugural address.
His mission was to reassure the American citizens their strengths and at the same time, motivate

The New Year Festival in Vietnam and in America
The New Year Festival in Vietnam and in America
Introduction
Although different countries in the world have different festivals and holidays, there is a
momentous event that annually they all eagerly long for. It is the New Year festival which marks
the pivotal point of a new period of time with the pure and pristine beginning for individuals.
However, each nation has its own traditions, customs and values partly reflected in the celebration
of the New Yearfestival. The ways of holding the festival in Viet Nam and in America are of no
exception. The two countries belonging to two geographical locations and cultures share some
certain similarities but mostly they show many obvious distinctions in the New Year celebration.

America, on the other hand, belongs to the industrial culture with rapid pace of life. Thus, they
have less time to spend for the holiday With Vietnamese and American, the New Year festival
gains different special significance. The Vietnamese New Year celebration is more complex and
charged with more symbolic meanings than the American one. Vietnamese people strongly believe
that the New Year demonstrates connections, renewals, thanksgivings and hopes. New Year
traditions maintain linkages between people of living generations in the real world with the dead
in the spiritual world. The connections for every family at this time are not only the gathering of
all the relatives living far from the hometown but also the reunions with the spirit of ancestors.
This belief presents a part of Vietnamese national identity and exerts considerable influence on
many Vietnamese people. They usually return to their family during Tet. Some visit the graves of
their parents and grandparents, removing weeds and worshiping to invoke the souls of the dead to
visit the family home. American, however, does not take the New Year festival as serious as
Vietnamese people. They regard this time as a public holiday bringing fireworks, parties, gifts and
musical events and an occasion for family to hold special dinner. Another difference in celebrating
the New Year festival

Oil Spills In The Gulf Of Mexico
How have oil spills affected the world? Has there been efforts to make sure the number of oil spills
are minimized? Oil Spills have been harming the environment for a very long time. The largest
oil spill to ever occur took place in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th, 2010. Twenty million gallons
of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. The second biggest oil spilltook place in the Bay of
Campeche, Mexico 1979. The third biggest oil spill took place in Trinidad and Tobago, West
Indies. Scientists have been trying to figure out how to minimize the number of oil spills.
The biggest oil spill in history started on April 20th, 2010 by an oil ring called the Deepwater
Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil ring was owned by an offshore oil drilling company called
Transocean and they were leasing the oil ring to British Petroleum. The oil well was located on a
seabed 4,993 feet below the surface of the ocean. On April 20th, a surge of natural gas penetrated
through the concrete core and went up the Deepwater rig s riser which led to the drilling
platform catching fire, and exploding. This caused eleven people to die and injured another
seventeen people. During this oil spill more than 200 million gallons of oil was pumped over a
period of 87 days into the Gulf of Mexico until the well was capped in July, 2010. A study in the
blowout preventer showed that huge blades known as blind shear rams ... Show more content on

response personnel cap it on March 23, 1980. The Ixotic 1 spilled oil at a rate of ten thousand to

Why Are Teachers Allowed Handguns

Teachers allowed handguns
Has it ever crossed your mind that you are not always safe? Certain situations are more risky and
treacherous. But some places are safer than other. For example your home, church, and even school.
But are you real safe at any of those places? What keeps someone from coming in and just taking
everything from right underneath you? Try to go back many, many, many years ago, do you
remember going off to kindergarten on the first day of school, ever? Emotions flying through
everyone, mom, dad, grandparents, and especially you. Worrying about will I like my teacher or
will my best friend be in my class? These all seem like fairly large problems at the time, ... Show

From Elementary schools to colleges, this is happening. Over 49.8 million enrolled in public
school in 2012. Although that may seem like a substantial amount of children,, the 297 that have
lost their lives seems like more of an impact. Every year, more than 250 students in the Chicago
Public Schools are shot, approximately 30 of these shootings are fatal. To deal with this problem,
CPS CEO Ron Huberman launched the $60 million violence prevention initiative in September of
2009 a program that have received a substantial about of national attention as an innovative attempt
to bring the violence rate down, and increase the education of the students most at risk for
violence and destruction. During this study a graph was made to determine the factors of children
that were more susceptible to being shot. For example if you have ever spent time in a juvenile
detention center, raises the likelihood by 2.5 percentage points. I feel that conducting this test has
helped determine some factors that could represent some problems and be better equipt with
solutions. Some of the largest school massacres were at Virginia Tech, 2007 killing 32 people.
Columbine High School 1999, 15 people dead. The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the horrific
story we all remember in 2012. Where 28 people died. It s really unfortunate our world has come
to this harsh reality of our society and its upbringing. Now people have said that teachers should
have to get their concealed handgun license (CHL). In 15 midwestern universities they did a
survey on whether or not to be able to carry a concealed handgun on campus, faculty and students.
When totalled up 1,649 students 92% returned their voting ballots. The majority 78% of students
was not supportive of concealed handguns on campuses, and 78% claimed that they would not
obtain a permit to carry a handgun, if it were legal. That just goes to show and prove that people are
uneasy about

  • 2. The Political Philosophy of Karl Raimund Popper Karl Raimund popper (1902 to 1994) was an influential philosopher of science, who philosophized about society, in much the same way he philosophized about science in a critical spirit. His personal experience, as an Austrian Jew in the days of the Nazi Anschluss (meaning link up or annexation in the German language), provided him a wealth of firsthand experience and insights into the nature of totalitarian governments. At a point in popper s life he was an enthusiast of Marxist socialism, but that enthusiasm was short lived as he soon began to develop a skeptical turn of mind towards Marxist socialism. He questioned the rationale in the sacrifice of human life which communism found necessary to its cause, after the leaders of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also postulated a broad range of social teleological theories generally called historic ism in which society was forced into accepting a unilateral version of reality which was wholly certain as to it present state and future outcomes. In the defense of the liberal tradition in politics Popper developed certain philosophical positions, to counter the notions by those philosophers who advocated such illiberal philosophical ideas that could only lead to the creation of closed societies for the world. The philosophical positions which popper advanced included a twin edged liberalism , in the sense of peacefully tolerating the proponents of closed societies in free societies, as long as they stuck to verbal arguments only, and social engineering by a piecemeal or (gradual) approach to social reforms. Popper considered the west and the rest of the world endangered by the influence of such thought that promoted a historicist or collectivist frame of social thought. This sort of frame for social thought he argued could only lead to the establishment of authoritarian and totalitarian forms of government, which would in turn suppress and constrain the liberties and lives of people in the long run. • 3. Childhood Is An Exceptional And Progressive Time Of... Childhood is an exceptional and progressive time of physical, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional development (Cozolino, 2010). The brain and its biological stress system are genetically programmed and influenced by early experience. Trauma has developmental consequences on children. Developmental traumatology research is systemic investigation of the psychiatric and psychobiological impact of the overwhelming and chronic interpersonal violence on the developing child (De Bellis, 2001, p. 539). It combines frameworks from developmental psychopathology, developmental neuroscience, and stress and trauma research (De Bellis, 2001). Child maltreatment experiences can be defined as neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessing of domestic violenceor community violence and these may be the most common causes of interpersonal traumas in children and adolescence (De Bellis, 2001). Child abuse experiences may cause delays or deficits in a child s ability to achieve age appropriate behavioral, cognitive, and emotional regulation (Cozolino, 2010). When the child caregiver relationship is the source of the trauma the attachment relationship is severely compromised as 80% of maltreated children develop insecure or avoidant attachment patterns (Smith, 2012). Consequences of a disrupted attachment include impairments in bio psychosocial competencies including increased susceptibility to stress and difficulty focusing attention; inability to regulate emotions and behaviors can ... • 4. The Influence Of Modern Art Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible way? After all, these wealthy individuals are spending their hard earned bills, hundreds upon thousands upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn t make any sense to anyone but the maker. This could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly grimey buyers are making our economy go down the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is a very inspiring investment, but the fact that these artists that spit out works that don t put any effort or passion into it are making the green show more readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be affecting our economy with their meaning leading to quick production, their odd cult worship making it understandable to those who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of sales types where the money goes and how it is made. How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole of Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is very hard to comprehend as far as the rational mind goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois, studied the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. • 6. Consequentialism, By John Stuart Mill Essay Consequentialism is a broad ethical theory that describes one s actions to be good or bad depending solely upon the consequences of those actions. The distinguishing element of this theory from others is that the action itself has no value without analyzing the expected consequences, as explained by William H. Shaw in Consequentialism , ...when it comes to rightness or wrongness, nothing matters but the results of our actions (Shaw 28). Then the question is, what exactly does it mean for a consequence to be deemed good ? Utilitarianism, a more specific form of consequentialism, answers this by describing a good action to be one that brings about the most happiness or well being for everyone. John Stuart Millstates, The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals utility or the greatest happiness principle holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness: wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness (Mill 7). This theory seems simple when applied to everyday situations. However, it can become tricky when applied to more complex, multi faceted, situations. Obviously there are differentiating levels of happiness. For example, in a situation where it seems there may be no such thing as a happy outcome, the anticipated consequence that is deemed to be the lesser of two evils would be perceived to bring about the most well being compared to the other choice. This theory may also seem difficult because it is based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sex Education Should Be Taught At School Sex education can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century. Chicago s public schools introduced the Nation s first formal sex education program which has raised controversy throughout the years. Many believe that talking about sex in the classroom raises the initiation of such behavior. Others believe that ignoring the subject keeps teens in the dark which leads them to make unsafe decisions when they become sexually active. Whether it is at school or at home, teens must be taught about the dangers of unprotected sex as well as abstinence. Being unaware of protection puts teens at risk of becoming pregnant or contracting an STD or STI. Sex educationmust be taught at school and it must be taught right, without lies or myths and without giving teens the idea that the only perfect time for them to become sexually active is when they are married. If sex education was taught at school instead of abstinence only education, it would help young adults make correct decisions when becoming sexually active as well as helping them make wise choices that can affect their future. From the beginning of the 1900 s, sex education became a topic that till this day will raise controversy. As it started to be introduced in more schools, conservative groups began protesting to ban sex education. They believed children should not be taught such behavior since it was a topic that should be discussed at home; at a parent s choice. When the 1980 s AIDS epidemic began, these ... The supply and demand of air travel is impacted by several factors. Air travel is a normal good. The demand for air travel can diminish slightly because there are other means of safer transportation available. The demand can also decrease if it becomes too unaffordable. Consumers with a higher income are able to spend more time vacationing with the use of air transportation. During the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, Jude and his other brothers openly expressed doubt in the divinity of Jesus (John 7:3 8), but Jude did eventually became a believer after Jesus death on the cross (Acts 1:14). The epistle of Jude is written to a general audience of Christians, who are called beloved in God the Father and kept for JesusChrist (v. 1). Jude begins by saying that He had planned to write about common salvation, but there were more pressing matters that he had to attend to. Jude s self professed purpose for writing his epistleis to rally his readers to contend for the faith against false teachers who might draw believers away from the truth (v. 3). Jude s method is twofold; he identifies the false teachers who have infiltrated the church, and he urges the church not to be swayed into apostasy by their blasphemous teachings. First and foremost, it is important to accurately determine a timeframe in which Jude was written. Jude s discussion of the false teachers in verses 4 18 closely resembles 2 Peter 2:1 3:4, and many scholars argue that Peter s second epistle predates Jude for a number of reasons. The first of these reasons is Peter s anticipation of false teachers to come (2 Pet. 2:1 2, 3:3), which chronologically speaking comes before the arrival of the false teachers, which Jude vv. 4, 11 12, 17 18 deals with. These psychological theories are more than theoretical in nature and can thus be applied practically. Indeed, through these theories, there is a growing belief that human behavior can be predicted using certain environmental factors. As psychologists continue to inquire more into human behavior, it becomes clearer than certain aspect of the social, biological, psychosocial, and technological environments have the biggest sway on people s choice of actions. Often, human beings participate in a task because of the value they will derive from it, especially in terms of its economic and social importance. Social cognitive theory is of the thought that what a person perceives as right and its significance influences a course of action. A person s behavior is greatly influenced by what he or she believes to be right or wrong. Most importantly, their actions are influenced by the benefits they accrue from them. For this reason, the subjective probabilities that affect the choice of actions can be used to determine a person s next actions and ultimately, their behavior. In his theory, Rotter explains that learning and cognitive processes combine to determine people s reactions to occurrences in life. • 26. Pros And Disadvantages Of Automation Automation is a beautiful endeavor. Much like the tools of the past, automation makes our lives as people easier. Today s technologies allow for more work to be done in less time, for less money, and with less human effort. Jobs that are in the inconvenient middle of being too repetitive to be interesting, but too complex for conventional computers to handle can now be automated seamlessly seamlessly in ways that are more efficient and safe than in ways humans can manage. A potent example would be cooking. Cooking is an occupation that requires precise measurements of both timeand material. If you cook something for too long of a time, it burns up or is overcooked. If you cook something for too short of a time, it becomes undercooked. This may be a problem for humans, but this is far from one for computers. The only input a computer needs is the perfect example to do the task perfectly. The many benefits of switching to automated operation makes it tempting for business owners to switch to it. However, a problem arises when one too many business owners decide to automate everything. The root of this problem stems from the nature of the free market. Money circulates around the country from buyer to seller, or in our case, from employer to employee. The employer fulfills the want or need of a client that they cater to. Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the most important clinical constructs of the 21st century (Hare, Clark, Grann, Thornton, 2000, p. 623). Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred socially deviant behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to possess are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive, selfish, aggressive, lacking remorse, shame, feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors (Hare, Neumann, 2006, p. 59 60). What exactly does this mean and how does it shape U.S. foreign policy? The War on Drugs can be defined as the systematic and aggressive policy that is determined to undermine and stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. This policy is backed by several U.S. institutions including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Customs. Also, included in this list are the numerous local law enforcement agencies across the country. The U.S. government has instituted the following ways for enforcing its foreign drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This refers to the elimination of drug crops while they are still being grown. The U.S. has used this policy in several South American countries as a means to limit drug trafficking before it has a chance to develop. However, significantly reducing crops has not always led to decreasing drug trafficking. Reduction of drug crops in one country may lead to increased production in another. This is likely to happen when one country becomes the focus of an eradication effort, while another country can increase its production to fill in the void. If there is one thing that the world market can produce, it is its high demand of illegal drugs. The Drug Policy Alliance gives cites a specific instance verifying the problems that can be associated with eradication procedures. During the mid 1990s, eradication efforts in Bolivia and Peru created incentives to grow coca in Columbia. While Peru experienced a 66% reduction in coca cultivation and Bolivia experienced a 53% reduction, coca cultivation in Columbia doubled. In addition, more potent strains of coca have been developed, leading to higher yielding coca crops. This example shows the adverse effects of the policy of eradication. • 30. The Value of Nature to Humans The Value of Nature Humans project the value of nature because humans are the only beings that are able to produce rational thoughts and are therefore, the only beings that value. Since humans are the only beings that value, they are inherently the only things that determine the value of other things. In addition to my main thesis, I will address where the valuein nature originates by explaining the disjoint relationship between humans and non humans. Expanding on my thesis, I will prove the projection view is correct by showing that all arguments for the recognition view appeal to projection. Projection, meaning, humans project value on to nature rather than recognition, meaning, humans recognize the intrinsic value of nature. The value of nature is a contentious issue that not only concerns environmental ethicists, but also everyday people around the world. As our world becomes more technologically dependent, it seems that we are becoming less concerned with nature. In deciding the future of our planet, it is important that we explore the value of nature and the consequence of destroying it. I will reference and utilize quotes by Holmes Rolston III from his novel, A New Environmental Ethics, as I evaluate the Euthyphro Problem as it applies to the value of nature. The recognition view of the value nature articulates that humans recognize the intrinsic value of nature. Where does the basis for this argument originate? • 31. Unactuality In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood It is a fact that Truman Capote published his bestselling novel, In Cold Blood, in January 1966. It is a fact that Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith confessed to, and were hanged for the murder of the Clutter family. However, it may not be true that Capote s new form of novel, the nonfiction novel, is entirely factual as he claims in numerous interviews. Instead Capoteuses a creative interpretation of events to manipulate the characters and to advance the narrative of In Cold Blood. Despite Capote s desire to write a book that was completely factual, the addition of information intended to influence the audience, the characterization of Perry, and fabrication of certain events all lead to a book that is less than factual. The novel, In Cold Blood, is Truman Capotes first attempt to deviate from the traditional mold of the novel, towards a fact based work of literature, that he called a nonfiction novel. Capote describes his intent with In Cold Blood to The Saturday Review when he says that I got the idea of doing a really serious big work it would be precisely like a novel, with a single difference: every word of it would be true from beginning to end (Voss). In this interview with The Saturday Review, Capote expresses that In Cold Blood would be written as a record of fact, juxtaposing the traditional novel that is based on the creation of events and of characters. Presence of an iceberg in A clean, well lighted place From the short story, A clean, well lighted place , Hemingway has comprehensively used his theory of omission. The first part where this theory is used is in the definition of the characters present in the story. The old man, who is the first character, is brought out with lots of omissions regarding his details (Hemingway 1). The old man is only described as old and deaf. In addition, it is stated that he enjoyed coming out at night when it was quieter and could drink until the waiters became restless and ordered him out. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The old man was therefore psychologically affected by the loneliness at home. Despite the wealth that is later highlighted by the waiters in their conversations, the old man cannot seem to find solace and hence the reason for frequent visit to the cafГ©. His quest is peace and company. This therefore explains why the writer takes the old man to a cafГ©, rather than to a bar. While alcohol is sold in all these places, the writer brings the old man to a cafГ©, due to its cleanliness, good arrangement and light. This illustrates that the old man opts for the cafГ© due to its calm nature, compared to the bars, which are noisy, violent, and disorderly (Morris and Owens 4). The ruthlessness associated with the bars makes it an unsuitable place for the old man and he thus opts to drink in the cafГ©. By omitting his hearing capability, the writer develops the concept of loneliness further. The old man cannot even get to hear from the community. He was therefore alienated from many realities and the world was far away from him. Through this, the writer clearly brings about the concept of despair. The perceived lack of an influence to commit suicide was intentionally omitted by the writer in order to give the reader a broader approach to the problem. If the writer had stated the reason that prompted the old man to attempt suicide, the reader could not have developed a broader understanding of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The implications of this statement and his entire school of thought had a profound effect on society as a whole. SГёren Kierkegaard is often thought to be the first proponent of existentialism but never used the term as a self describer and was categorized as an existentialist posthumously. Sartre derived his inspiration from Martin Heidegger and embraced the term, but he was hardly the only one to flirt with such thinking. Many philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir, Maurice Merleau Ponty, Albert Camus and Fyodor Dostoyevsky were also influential existentialists. Although this branch of philosophy theorizes over many facets of human existence, one of its most innovative proposals was the true meaning of life. Scholar Frederick Copleston explains that Sartre believed that what all existentialists have in common is the fundamental doctrine that existence precedes essence. As a result, each individual is free of preconceived notions assigned to them by society and religion. Everyone must be responsible for creating their own values and determining a meaning to their own lives. Existence precedes essence is a central theme in existentialism.
