Keynote remarks for Thespian Conference/Jan. 26, 2013 Hello. (My name is Patty Raun. I am the
director of the School of Performing Arts and Cinema at Virginia Tech. Talk aout my background is as

You have a great mind, Patty! I remember my dad saying, You need to use it for something more
practical! Go into law or medicine! Make theatre an avocation . . . not a vocation! You see I was raised
in a family of scientists we had a copy of Gray s Anatomy (the book, not the television series) and a

The Murder And Robbery Of A Shoe Factory
In 1920, during the height of the Red Scare, a shoemaker, Nicola Sacco (1891 1927), and a fish
peddler, Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1888 1927), were accused of robbing and murdering the paymaster and
guard of a shoe company in South Braintree, Massachusetts. Known as anarchists and draft evaders,
the accused men faced a hostile judge and a public convinced of their guilt. Despite Sacco s
corroborated testimony that he was at the Italian consulate in Boston at the time of the murder, the two
were found guilty on the basis of witness identification and their suspicious behavior after the murder,
and were sentenced to death by Judge Webster Thayer. The trial of two Italian immigrants, Nicola
Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, grasped the entire nation. Both men were accused of murder and
robbery of a shoe factory in Braintree, Massachusetts. They were both sentenced to death for the
robbery and murder even though there was insufficient evidence. Many people strongly disagreed with
the verdict as they believed the men were innocent and were prosecuted because of their politics.
On April 15th, 1920, in South Braintree, Massachusetts after a paymaster and a security guard who
were carrying $15,000 for a shoe company were shot and killed in cold blood by two men in a car.
The two men took the 15,000 and fled. The polices attention was directed towards Sacco and Vanzetti
as their prime suspects because Sacco had the same type of gun used in the killing and Sacco and
Vanzetti had been seen

Summary Of Guy Debord s Society Of The Spectacle
Throughout history there have been many well known philosophers. Through this paper I will be
discussing the perspectives of philosophers Guy Debord, Michel Foucault, and John Rawls. In Guy
Debord s, The Society of the Spectacle he makes critics of technological capitalism. In Michel
Foucault s, Power/Knowledge he goes over different types of power and how they are interpreted.
Debord was a situationist international, which meant creating situations or creating situations.
Referring to the several theses in Debord s novel I can say that the society of the spectacle ...is not a
collection of images; rather, it is a social relationship between people that is mediated by images
(Derbord, 12). This shows that it is not only a result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consumable survival must increase, in fact, because it continues to enshrine deprivation. The reason
there is nothing beyond augmented survival, and no end to its growth, is that survival itself belongs to
the realm of dispossession: it may gild poverty, but it cannot transcend it (Debord, 30). This explains
that the people are consumers of illusions; it blindsides the people from reality and only allows them
to only be aware of what society or social media wants them to know.
In Michel Foucault s, Power/ Knowledge , there are two chapters titled Truth and Power and The Eye
of the Power . Foucault s conception of power is that power is everywhere. Everyone has power and
has the ability to make use of their power, but often times citizens don t make use of their power. It
seems that they are in fear of those who enforce their power already, which prevents them to make use
of their power. An everyday individual sees power to be in the hands of who the people have chosen .
We should not always think about power as the private property of government or state, but rather as
an equal common ground for all of those who share the land. It is not the state that doesn t matter, but
the power is bigger than the state; although the state has power, it does not have all power. A

Wildfire Pollution
An estimated 212 million people in the United States live in an area affected by wildfire pollution
(Knowlton, 2013); a number that, due to global climate change, will only continue to rise (Westerling
et al., 2006; Settele et al., 2014). The effects of exposure to wildfire smoke on human health are hard
to quantify because the long term effects often go unnoticed. One estimate for global premature death
rate due to exposure of wildfire smoke is 399,000 persons annually (Johnston et al., 2012). There are
many serious health risks associated with exposure to wildfire smoke, many of which remain poorly
understood. A 2016 systematic review entitled Critical Review of Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke
Exposure compiled information from multiple studies examining the health effects of exposure to
wildfire smoke. The study reviewed every reference found within its search parameters over three
databases, selecting for papers without potential biases including small sample size and unreliable
smoke exposure assessment methods (Reid et al., 2016). The results of the remaining 103 studies were
them compiled and compared to assess for the consistency of their findings (Reid et al., 2016). The
study found that smoke from wildfires contains toxins such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide,
ozone, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter (PM) (Naeher et al. 2007). Particulate
matter, also known as particle pollution, can be expressed as the sum of all solid particles and

Building and Maintaining a High Level of Education
There are two kids, both best friends. One of the friends, Dan, always does his homework and gets A s
on pretty much all of his tests and other assignments. The other friend, Fred, usually forgets that he
was assigned homework and sleeps through most of his classes, getting C s on most of his tests and
assignments. They each live in a four person household, each having a ordinary mom, dad, and a
sibling. Dan has a close relationship with a few of his favorite teachers and Fred could not care less
about conversing with his teachers. Both boys grew up in similar circumstances and have been friends
for as long as they can remember, but the boys each have different motivators and values in the effort

This helps them (the students) strive for a better and more in depth schooling on their favorite subject.
The value teachers place upon education is also an important factor in a student s future. Hickam s
teacher, Miss. Riley, only wants to inspire her students, even if it is just one student; and she does so.
She sees Homer for what he could do and not for what he should do, as most people in town believe.
Teachers are not there for students to fail, they become a teacher because many want to help aid
students in further education or spark interest that maybe some students have not found yet, especially
in college. Teachers have the power to motivate their students positively (Wilhelm 29). The value that
parents place upon education for their kids is important because kids model the teachings of their
parents more often, learning what they (the parents) think is important as their (the students) own
importance. Stephanie Brueck and her colleagues, who write the article The Relationship Between
Parental Involvement During High School and Collegiate Academic Mastery published in Psi Chi

The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma Essay
The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma With earthquakes on the rise, we must figure out the cause of
them and determine a solution to help limit or even prevent them from occurring. Since early 2009,
earthquakes have been sweeping across the state of Oklahoma, causing many people to worry about
their own well being. Many scientists speculate the source of the earthquakes might be a result of
Hydraulic Fracturing deep down in Earths crust. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which oil and
natural gas companies pump up to millions of gallons of wastewater, sand, and chemicals down drilled
holes in order to release pockets of shale within the earth. This use of technology is in question of the
potential cause or inducement of earthquakes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Areas that have become a prime source for these quakes are being heavily surveyed for signs of
structural damage along with potential changes and repairs by home inspectors. Seismologists have
recorded that most Oklahoma earthquakes generally strike within the 2.5 3.0 magnitude on average.
While some have been recorded to spike up much higher which could potentially cause structural
damage to homes. Earthquakes of large magnitude have the potential to create large scale destruction
to homes, which do not meet building code requirements for earthquakes of this magnitude. It has
implications for calculated risks of seismic hazard, and it will have an economic impact on the state if
people have to start building to more stringent design standards (Brus). Many scientists from around
the country believe there may be links to the earthquakes for hydraulic fracturing, also known as
fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which millions of gallons of wastewater are pumped
deep down in the earths crust to break down rock releasing pockets of shale. This process is very
important to the oil industry. It is our leading method of obtaining oil and natural gas from the earth.
America has a very poor image when it comes to the oil industry. This process allows us to obtain and
become more sufficient in our pursuit for oil and natural gas. The U.S Geological Survey and OGS

The Dome Of The Rock In Ravenna, Italy
Great pieces of architecture like The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the Church of San Vitale in
Ravenna, Italy are important to Byzantine and Islamic Art. Both structures were not just places of
worship, but showed the power of the men behind them and the growth of the culture at this time. San
Vitale which was constructed under the Bishop Ecclesius around 540 to 548 A.D. and was erected to
show the power and achievements of Emperor Justinian. The banker Julius Argenteus provided the
funds for San Vitale, and it was dedicated to Bishop Maximian. The Dome of the Rock was built in
Jerusalem by Caliph Abd al Malik to mark the triumph of Islam in Jerusalem on a site sacred to

The bishop was also in charge of building two other churches, San Michele and Santa Maria, but San
Vitale is larger in scale than these two churches, designed as a centrally planned octagonal two story
congressional church (Tronchin and Knight 130).The church features two centric octagons. The dome
covered inner octagon rises above the surrounding octagon to provide the interior with clerestory
lighting (Gardner and Kleiner B: 255). This octagon shape brings the parishioners to the center of the
church, allowing them to become part of the service, which is not found in a traditional church. The
dome is constructed on eight piers and arches which are surrounded by an ambulatory and a gallery.
Much of the inside is marble and gold and the church walls have many windows to let the sun in to
shine on this gold. Light filtered through the alabaster paned windows and plays over glittering
mosaics and flowing marble (Gardner 255) which shows the beauty and lavish pieces Justinian put
into this construction, even though the outside is dull and made mostly of bricks. However, this
becomes another difference concerning these two monuments. The dome of San Vitale shows the
Roman influence, with a figure of Christ, marbles and glittering galleries and the Dome of the Rock
features a more ordinary approach with geometric shapes and calligraphy as well as extraordinary
colors used in Islamic

Importance Of Descartes On Physiology
Hitherto, I have explained some elements concerning Descartes and vitalistic theories about
physiology. On the one hand, I have highlighted that Descartes approach to physiology is founded on
his mechanical conception of nature, which allows him to use the laws of nature in order to explain the
particular functioning of the human body. In general, Descartes argues that God creates matter in a
uniform way and he separates it, creating individual bodies, through the introduction of motion in the
system. Accordingly, Descartes conception of matter denies the very possibility of the existence of
certain individual properties of matter, on the assumption that every matter particle has been created in
the same way and is affected by the same laws. Thus, Descartes explains that the laws of nature have a
broad scope, and their universal application is based on the metaphysical conception of the regularity

For instance, in his World, Descartes explains that heat and light are explicable in terms of the motion
of the particles which constitute the flame or the Sun the luminescent bodies of nature. In his
description, Descartes argues that When flame burns wood or some other similar material, we can see
with the naked eye it sets the minute parts of the wood in motion and separates them from one another,
thus transforming the finer parts into fire, air and smoke, and leaving the coarser parts as ashes (AT
XI, 7). Clearly, this mechanical explanation contradicts the vitalist conception of the qualities of the
bodies which make them flammable. In vitalistic terms, the capacity of burning a body has is
explained because of a quality in it which makes it flammable: a heat quality or a light quality
explains the presence of this visible effects in bodies like the Sun or a flame. For Descartes, this
positions are nothing but the result of a productive

Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam...
The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great change
in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly toward
colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most of all women,
and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help them to rebuild their
identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can be used to examine it from
different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain s Testament of Youth, for
example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own diaries and letters sent from
around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a woman s perspective during the
war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary source and a collection of stories all
looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo in particular and it provides multiple
views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from
Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a secondary source, as the book is a collection of her
own essays and thus likely has notes of personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing
in the facts and somewhat journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. Ernest Hemingway s The
Sun Also Rises, while a work of fiction, is a novel that focuses on characters dealing with the

Animal Farm Essay
George Orwell s book Animal farm is an allegory that takes place on a farm. The book represents
Russia and the Soviet Union under communist party rule also, it exemplifies any human society. The
farm gets over run by animals who feel neglected by their owner Mr. Jones. One night Mr. Jones got
drunk and forgot to feed the animals. In this story the animals are given human like abilities suck as
speaking English. The eldest pig, Old Major shares his dream of all animals living together in freedom
with no humans to control them. The unambiguous truth of the matter is that Old Major, plays a
significant part in the play because after he passes away the other animals come together to fulfill his
goal of a revolution. The first point to consider is, Old Major affects the action that takes place in the
book by his ability to persuade the other animals to share his indignation. Although he does not appear
often, he plays one of the most important roles. After Mr. Jones passes away the animals have the
ambition to rebel and the revolution begins. They begin to clandestinely plan out their rebellion. The
author portrays the pigs as the smartest animals and has them teach the other animals about animalism,
the term that Old Major introduced to the animals at a meeting. The animals then win in a battle

Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a story that brings one to question the
code of honor that exists in the
Columbian town. Marquez paints a picture that shows how societal values, such as honor, have
become more important than the inherent good of human life. The Vicario brothers belief that their
sister was done wrong was brought upon by this honor, along with racial and social tension. The
dangerous path of both honor and religious faith caused Santiago s untimely death.
Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario said. It was a matter of honor (Marquez 56). In the town

Angela simply named
Santiago Nasar as her lover but there was no other evidence besides her word to back that statement
up. The narrator explained that most of those who could have done something to prevent the crime
and did not console themselves with the pretext that affairs of honor are sacred monopolies, giving
access only to those who are part of the drama (114). If the medieval idea that death brings honor is
true, then it is safe to say Santiago Nasar died without honor for he did not know the reason for his
death was.
The Vicarios were poor Hispanics and the Nasars were rich Arabs, so social and racial tension was
clear. In the town though, honor is not defined by race or color. The Vicario brothers are cousins to
Santiago, yet when Santiago died the Arab families were perplexed and sadâ?¦but none harbored the
ideas of vengeance (94). After they killed
Santiago, the brothers went to the parish house, not for repentance, but because they would be safe
from the Arabs (91) and were comforted by the honor of having done their duty, and the only thing
that worried them was the persistence of the smell [of death] (91).
Before their release, their mother Pura asked Father Amador to confess her sons in jail, but Pedro
Vicario refused, and convinced his brother that they had nothing to repent (95). That scene gives the
reader a picture of how the twins viewed the killing as being above their religion,

Private Military Contractors In Vietnam War
In his 1960 Farewell Address, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower brought attention to the
military industrial complex , a term that is used to describe how the government uses private industry
to meet its various demands during war or peace. Since World War I and World War II, the United
States has witnessed a greater connection between the public and private sectors as private industry
pumped out the goods to keep the government and country going. Similarly, there were changes on the
battlefield as now private contractors became common sights. Eventually, the government would call
on private contractors to provide aid on the military battlefield and even fight in some instances. The

Mars Basalt
One of the most fundamental questions in science currently is whether we are alone in the universe.
All the terrestrial planets, such as Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, show evidence of volcanic
activities in their past.1,2 Mars is the only location where budgetary and technological constraints
permit access and is also considered as having had the most likely planet for sustaining life.1 5 The
surface conditions of Mars presently appear hostile to life,6 and thus we rely on evidence that the
planet has been more hospitable to life in the past.7 such as the recent discovery of liquid water by
NASA s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.8
The change to colder and drier conditions may have forced any ancient life to retreat into the
subsurface.9,10 Alternatively, while Mars experienced significant volcanic activity, biological
remnants may have been absorbed into ancient rocks, and some organic molecules as an indicator of
life on Mars may still remain. Thus, the organic matter within the rock potentially contains
information that can be used to determine the past or extant presence of life. On this assumption, if we

Love And Love In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130
Shakespeare wrote many sonnets about love, largely in a traditional sense. However, his 130th sonnet
takes a different theme: a relationship that is found through true friendship and love despite physical
beauty standards. Shakespeare uses contrasting values, natural and divine imagery and contradictory
statements to show that love is much more than just physical attraction.
Sonnet #130 is filled with nature imagery: Shakespeare mentions the sun, coral, snow and roses, all
things that are largely deemed beautiful by society both then and now. In these images, he paints the
idea of what a beautiful woman should look like, how the woman he thinks of loving looks like she s
from a fairy tale. The nature images are described as being absent from the woman Shakespeare loves,
rather than being given an opposite, implying that the woman he loves is by no means someone he
cannot love or look upon. Though many interperet the mistress of this sonnet to be an ugly woman due
to some other lines of the poem, this absence of an opposite seems to suggest otherwise: she is not an
ethereal beauty, simply a normal, plain looking woman who the sonnet s speaker loves despite how
she may look.
Shakespeare uses more imagery in this sonnet than just things found in nature. Though there are only
two instances of it, he also uses imagery of the divine. It occurs once in the last quatrain ( I grant I
never saw a goddess go ), and once in the poem s final couplet ( And yet, by heaven, I think my

Biological Theories Of Deviance
Deviance differ from culture to culture and person to person, it is hard to pinpoint what is considered
deviant to the masses and what is not. For example. a single culture may accept the idea of marrying
off their daughter at a young age as acceptable, but other cultures may not and might find this to be a
heinous act. While there are different forms of deviants ranging from criminal, sexual, to even a
persons lifestyle, theories have been reformed throughout the decades to better explain the basis of
these abnormal acts. There are various theories of deviancy. It is because deviance is not restricted to a
single type of biology, psychology, or sociology. Biological theories of deviance focuses primarily on
the nature of the individual.

Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book
The representation of animals within Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book is symbolic of the
colonisation of India, advocating the agenda of the British colonisers through the theme of imperialist
oppression. This is particularly evident within the Mowgli story Kaa s Hunting as well as the animal
story Rikki Tikki Tavi . Within the Mowgli story, the theme of imperialist oppression is conveyed
primarily through the Law of the Jungle as Kipling uses Baloo, the Bandar log and Shere Khan
symbolically as justification. Animals within Rikki Tikki Tavi embody this representation also,
reflecting this demonstration of imperialist oppression despite the lack of pronounced law. The Law of
the Jungle is essentially a set of rules devised to govern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Shere Khan, Nag and Nagaina represent the resisting of colonial imposition yet are presented as
antagonists despite their celebrated significance within Eastern culture (Veloso de Abreu 690). The
portrayal of these characters as the enemy epitomises Kipling s connotation of resistance as adverse.
Both Nag and Nagaina meet the same fate as Shere Khan to further reinforce this notion as they die
and imperial oppression triumphs. The character of Rikki Tikki Tavi also holds symbolism within the
scheme of Indian colonisation as he is subject of colonial rule, employed to protect and defend his
white masters (Nyman 207). The mongoose sacrifices his traditional role to live under colonial rule, a
choice encouraged as the narrator states that every well brought up mongoose always hopes to be a
house mongoose some day (Kipling). For both Rikki Tikki Tavi and his masters to live, the
antagonists, those who resist imperial oppression, must die. This is explicit as Nag knows that
mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later for him and his family (Kipling), once again
justifying imperial oppression even without the Law of the Jungle . The advocating of the agenda of

Edvard Munch, Paul Cezanne, And Henri Rousseau
Pablo Picasso had quite a few things in his life that shaped how he went about his art. One being his
relationships with different woman. His relationships with woman really showed through his art and
was similar to the modern artists imaginations.
Second is in the 1920 s Picasso began to dabble in Surrealism but he never actually changed his ways
in doing his art. He was always trying to find new ways to express himself without completely
throwing his original ways out to the side. Picasso, while dabbling in Surrealism began to also do an
art called Cubism, which had been suppressed for many years before. Cubism led to his creation of
what we know today as the collage.

Perceptual Maps and Beer Executive summary
This report illustrates the relationship of beer brands within the perceptual map in regards to alcohol
content and price as well as implications for consumer behaviour. The perceptual map indicates that
there are market segments in premium beers with high alcohol content. There is also a market segment
for low cost beers with high alcohol content. The perceptual map also shows that there are potential
business opportunities for premium beers with low alcohol content.

campaign was creative, risk taking and appealing to its target audience male light beer drinkers who
had felt less masculine and dull for drinking light beer. The ads empowered them to drink light beer

Authoritarism in Argentina in the Last Fifty Years Essay
Latin America politics in the past 50 years have been regarded as being unstable with military
regimes, authoritarian rule, and violent. Latin America has been considered an authoritarian region
with rulers either military or civilian directed. 3 governments are important to stabilize countries with
tension of nation crisis by eliminating the popular sector in the national politics. In Argentina the
prevalence of authoritarian changed the principal lines of the former government in their social,

Not all Latin America countries had the same rules and policies when they were authoritarian. Several
differences between regimes are the role of leadership; intersect groups or coalitions in supporting

pluralism (Malloy, James M, pages 4). When viewing Latin Americas perspective on authoritarian rule
can be broken down into three levels (1) regime type authoritarianism running from old fashioned
caudillo, (2) overarching subtypes corporation structural and organizational principles, (3) leaders,

Female Portrayal in Disney Cartoon Films
Most of the world s youth grow up watching Disney films. As family movies should, these films
demonstrate appropriate behavior through the characters in them and can teach semi useful lessons to
the children who watch. Of course children don t always pick up every message that the movies they
watch are set to convey, but watching these films as an adult may raise an eyebrow or two. These
movies consist of young, naïve, and beautiful princesses doing what it takes to be freed from a bad
circumstance and ultimately falling in love along the way. Is it sexist? Sexism is defined as attitudes or
behavior based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles; discrimination or devaluation based on a
person s sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially, such discrimination directed against women.
In the real world, women have fought a long time for equal rights as men and are still fighting to
overcome some disadvantages. Just like children, some adults also might not find anything wrong
with the films and see it as harmless entertainment for their kids. Their apathy over the matter can be
due to the fact that they genuinely don t care or just don t think about it. Although everyone should
care to an extent, people who actually might care or think about this subject matter are usually
feminists. But even feminists have different ideologies and takes on Disney and whether or not its
movies are sexist or not. For many centuries, girls have been raised to live a traditional

The Armenian Arts
The exquisite country of Armenia is found in the Southern Caucasus region, and it borders Georgia,
Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. With a history dating back all the way to 600 B.C., Armenia is
considered the oldest Christian nation. Its capital, Yerevan, is the largest city and is well known for its
tourist attractions. Armenia s population is around ten million people. The Armenian Genocide, the
tragic earthquake, and several wars with other nations have affected what this country stands for
today. Armenia s fascinating architecture, music and dance, and textiles have all been greatly
influenced by its ancient history and Christian heritage.
Armenia s ancient history and adoption of Christianity are shown in the elegant styles of this country s
architecture. Each monument has different features, but they all have the same characteristic; they are
made out of stone. Some buildings are carved into a cave or mountain! You will likely find several
architectural features in almost every monument. These features are stone cupolas and Khachkars.
Many Armenian churches have stone cupolas. Stone cupolas are domes that sit on top of great big
domes. Armenian architects use them as decoration or adornment. As you can probably imagine, these
cupolas weigh a ton, which is why there are arches to help support them. Another key architectural
feature you will definitely spot in Armenia is Khachkars, stone crosses. There are approximately
20,000 Khachkars in the country. These stone crosses

Quantitative Arbitrage Trading Strategy Analysis
Many financial instruments have exhibited mean reversion, such as US and global equities [1],
commodities [2], foreign exchange rates [3] as well as volatility indices [19]. Moreover, some
researchers have also found mean reverting process to be very useful in modeling the interest rate and
default risk dynamics [20]. In financial industry, some practitioners even attempt to profit by
constructing mean reverting prices which are usually known as statistical arbitrage or pair trading.
Statistical arbitrage is a more sophisticated trading strategy that evolved out of the simpler pairs trade
strategy [4]. In the pairs trading, two highly correlated stocks are put into pairs and when one stock
outperforms the other, we short this stock and long the other stock. Unlike the pair trading, Statistical
arbitrage usually considers a basket of hundreds or more stocks, long in some and short in others, in
order to construct a mean reversion portfolio.
The pairs/statistical arbitrage trading strategies have gained great popularity with the invention of
exchange traded funds (ETFs), as some ETFs are created to track the underlying indexes/assets. The
mean reverting spreads among commodity ETFs have already been investigated and the trading
strategies have been developed for statistical arbitrage [21]. Moreover, the mean reverting spread
between physical gold price and gold ETFs has also been investigated [22].
Given the dynamics of the underlying portfolio or assets, investors have to

importance. This paper brings out an additional feature of handling input data of various dimensions
and thus accordingly handle it. I. INTRODUCTION In the world of data clustering, K means is one of
the most extensively used algorithms. And the application area is vast ranging from economics,
bioinformatics, astronomy, image processing and so on. All these applications deal with huge chunks
of input data sets and parallelizing the application is one of the best ways to save the computation
time. Graphics processing units (GPU) is one of the many hardware used for parallelizing such
applications. Developed initially for different types of graphics applications, GPU has now found its
way in various general application processing as well. The existing GPU implementation of the
algorithms like UV_kmeans have showcased a speedup of forty to sixty in comparison with other dual
core or multi core implementations. The programming model used in this paper is CUDA (Compute
Unified Device Architecture). The basic organization of the architecture is shown in fig 1. To state
briefly, modern day GPUs contain about hundreds of processor cores each working on the exact same

Confucianism, Taoism, And Confucianism
In Chinese history, there were three main philosophies: Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. These
beliefs helped shape Chinese culture as well as Chinese history. Not only did people believe in these
ideas, but the three helped to govern the mighty Chinese dynasties. These dynasties all provided an
impact to each doctrine; the philosophy that had the greatest impact was legalism because it ended the
Warring States Period, provided structure, and strengthened agriculture, and the military of China.
Although Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism had a few things in common and at times tried to
resolve the same problem, they were very different from each other in their beliefs, character, and
ways of life. Confucianism was founded by the first Chinese thinker to address both the political and
social order of things straightforwardly and self consciously. Kong Fuzi, or Confucius in English,
lived from 551 479 B.C.E., but his teachings did not reach their full potential during the his life of an
educator and political advisor born into an aristocratic family. Confucius gathered many disciples to
spread his beliefs that were rooted in moral, ethical, and political character. He didn t address
questions about religion because he believed they were above the human moral intelligence capacity,
nor those regarding obscure, complicated philosophical questions because they would not help solve
the problems of China. Confucius did not really even care about the state, but he did believe

Budget and Budgetary Control Practices
CHAPTER I
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Budget and budgetary control practices are undeniably indispensable as organizations routinely go
about their business activities and operations. These organizations are constantly on the alert on how
actual levels of performance agree with planned or budgeted performance. A budget expresses a plan
in monetary terms. It is prepared and approved prior to a particular budgeted period and explicitly may
show the income, expenditure and the capital to be employed by organizations in achieving their goals
and objectives.
Budgeting control practices are then devices that organizations use to regulate their budgets. The
controls are mostly comprehensive systems of budgets that aid management in carrying out its ...

Night by Elie Wisel and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are both books that have differences and

A quotation from this novel of this is when Slim said You had to George, I swear you had to just after
the murder place. The quote relates to the relationship of Elie and his father by showing how they both
felt the same burden about others. Lastly, another similarity between the relationships is how close
they are throughout the novels. For example, one way is as mentioned earlier, they care for each other
by feeling remorse when something happens to them such as in Night or when they do something that
might put them in danger or make them ill. An example is when George says Lennie for God sakes
don t drink so much. This relates to Elie and his father by showing us how they cared for each other s
health. All of this shows that even if characters are from different novels there are still many qualities
in their relationships that coincide. The relationship between Elie and his father, and the relationship
between George and Lennie differed in many aspects. One example, of this is that George and Lennie
from the novel Of Mice and Men had a relationship of tough love even though they cared for each
other, compared to Elie and his father which still loved each other but were not so harsh on each other.
For instance, George always would say I would be better off without you Lennie. Even though he was
tough on him George still cared for him. This quote relates to Elie and his dad because it explains how
this made their relationships differ. On the other

Essay on Hines’Article Triggers Response
A journal article s goal is to inform the reader of a subject, but it also attempts to conjure a response or
thought of any kind. Housing, Baseball, and Creeping Socialism The Battle of Chavez Ravine, Los
Angeles, 1949 1959 by Thomas S. Hines causes a reaction from the start by failing to include an
abstract to aid the reader. Had I not had a background in Chavez Ravine, this would be a crucial
negligence. Once the essay begins, Hines delves straight into Chavez Ravine, the architects behind the
housing project there, and the socialist controversy that doomed the project, provoking a number of
responses from me ranging from frustration to sympathy. From the very first sentence, Hines plunges
into the article as if the reader already ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hines continues his three pages on the architect alone by describing his project Channel Heights s
relation to Chavez Ravine: Its shopping center, schools, and community buildings [...] comprised all in
all [...] a fine response to the hilly site of coastal ravines (Hines 126 127). An additional three pages
are devoted to Alexander and to why he was chosen for the project of Chavez Ravine, which was to be
renamed Elysian Park Heights. Hines discusses his work on Baldwin Hills Village similar to Channel
Heights. Again, no purpose for including this background is clear. Hines does not even relate back to
Chavez Ravine until he writes, Alexander was appointed in 1945 to the Los Angeles City Planning
Commission which led him to the project of restoring Chavez Ravine (Hines 128 129). Finally, after
six pages, Hines connects to the architects and to Chavez Ravine when he states that Alexander
chooses Neutra as his partner. At this point, Hines is now well into the article and still has not
established a clear, controlling purpose. This is extremely irritating because it seems he is just reciting
collected information. Though Hines draws out the section about the architects plans, the descriptions
of Chavez Ravine s architectural redesign demonstrate the architects hope to keep the community in
mind. Hines emphasizes this point because of his implied sympathy for the community. He includes a

Atopic Dermatitis Case Study
The epidermis of the skin has the functions of immune nonspecific defense and water retention due to
barrier qualities. Nonspecific defense is innate and defined by the fact that it does not differentiate
between foreign matters; it protects against all external materials rapidly (Stanfield, 2013, p. 675). The
stratum corneum is the tough superficial layer of the skin, which is bound by non nucleated cells
called corneocytes. Corneocytes are keratin bundles bound by proteins and lipids. Lipids are necessary
for the skin to function as a barrier in order to maintain moisture levels in the skin (WHO, 2009).
Chronic atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inherited genetic skin disease which typically begins in
childhood and is characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Genetic defects in the production of
filaggrin are the basis of dry skin and a risk factor for developing AD. Histamines produce1 the
sensation of itch and are released into the skin as an immune response, triggered by inflammation. AD
creates inflammation in the skin by autoimmune abnormalities, even without the presence of a
bacteria, virus, or irritant. This chronic disease may be controlled through medical treatment ... Show

The autoimmune nature of AD causes an attack on the skin, and inflammation causes a release of
histamine into skin tissues as an immune response to inflammation (Handout on Health, 2013).
Histamine increases itchy sensations that may be suppressed temporarily by scratching. Scratching
disrupts the action potential signals of itch in a specific area, but scratching skin causes lichenification
and excoriations. Lichenification is thick, leathery skin, and excoriations are superficial skin abrasions
(Itching, n.d.). Chronic dry skin is another cause of itch, and both are both symptoms of AD (Del

The book starts out strong and extremely informational, slows down extremely in the middle chapters
and ends in theory, which is somewhat thought provoking. Moving on now with the pro s and con s of
Kerwin s book Rulemaking. The pro s: Unlike many other public administration texts and especially
those dealing with admin law, Kerwin used many current policies and procedures. By this text being

examples within the Clean Air Act and Medicaid. The cases and explanations are thoroughly defined

The Ratio Of Coke s Current Ratio
Current Ratio
The first of the liquidity ratios is the current ratio. The current ratio is the number of times that current
assets exceed current liabilities. It is calculated by dividing the company s current assets by their
current liabilities. In most circumstances, the higher the current ratio, the better. The ratio is an
excellent indication of the company s ability to pay its short term debts. A decline in the current ratio
could imply that the company is having trouble generate cash, it could also be a result of increases of
short term debt, and/or a decrease in current assets. An improvement in the current ratio implies that
the company has an increased ability to pay off current liabilities. As current ratio declines, the overall
risk increases, and as it improves, the risk declines. From 2013 to 2014, Coke s current ratio dropped
from 1.13 to 1.02 before rising to 1.24 in the most recent year of 2015. However, compared to Pepsi s
ratio of 1.31, Coke s current ratio is lower. To increase their ratio to be more competitive with their
benchmark, Coke could use long term borrowing to pay off some of their current liabilities.
Quick Ratio
Next for the liquidity ratios is the quick ratio. The quick ratio, also called the acid test ratio, is a more
accurate test of liquidity than the current ratio because inventory is excluded from current assets.
Liquid assets are assets that can easily be converted into cash or cash equivalents. Inventories are

Body Integrity Identity Disorder
1. Introduction
Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID, also known as apotemnophilia and xenomelia) is a rare
condition in which the person experiences a strong feeling of overcompleteness with four limbs,
causing an intense desire for amputation (1,2). Instead of a wish for amputation there may also be a
desire to paralysis (3). These individuals do not suffer from delusions or psychosis, and fully
understand the bizarre nature of their desire (2,4). At this time BIID is not included in the ICD 11 or
DSM 5, causing this condition to be unknown by psychiatrists, neurologist and surgeons. Therefore
there is no effective pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatment option available (2). Only the
requested amputation itself seems effective, but for ethical reasons those amputations are not
preformed in regular healthcare (3). As a result BIID individuals often avoid healthcare and express
their desire by pretending to be disabled or, in extreme cases, by eventually performing self
amputation (4 7). The lifelong desire of an individual to be physically disabled may be considered
incomprehensible by many. However, for BIID individuals the strong sense that their anatomical self
as an able bodied person is inappropriate and that they were meant to go through life as a disabled
person is constantly present and cannot be suppressed (3). This feeling becomes manifest in early
childhood and remains throughout life (5). Although this phenomenon is very rare and prevalence

  • 3. The Murder And Robbery Of A Shoe Factory In 1920, during the height of the Red Scare, a shoemaker, Nicola Sacco (1891 1927), and a fish peddler, Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1888 1927), were accused of robbing and murdering the paymaster and guard of a shoe company in South Braintree, Massachusetts. Known as anarchists and draft evaders, the accused men faced a hostile judge and a public convinced of their guilt. Despite Sacco s corroborated testimony that he was at the Italian consulate in Boston at the time of the murder, the two were found guilty on the basis of witness identification and their suspicious behavior after the murder, and were sentenced to death by Judge Webster Thayer. The trial of two Italian immigrants, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, grasped the entire nation. Both men were accused of murder and robbery of a shoe factory in Braintree, Massachusetts. They were both sentenced to death for the robbery and murder even though there was insufficient evidence. Many people strongly disagreed with the verdict as they believed the men were innocent and were prosecuted because of their politics. On April 15th, 1920, in South Braintree, Massachusetts after a paymaster and a security guard who were carrying $15,000 for a shoe company were shot and killed in cold blood by two men in a car. The two men took the 15,000 and fled. The polices attention was directed towards Sacco and Vanzetti as their prime suspects because Sacco had the same type of gun used in the killing and Sacco and Vanzetti had been seen ... • 4. Summary Of Guy Debord s Society Of The Spectacle Throughout history there have been many well known philosophers. Through this paper I will be discussing the perspectives of philosophers Guy Debord, Michel Foucault, and John Rawls. In Guy Debord s, The Society of the Spectacle he makes critics of technological capitalism. In Michel Foucault s, Power/Knowledge he goes over different types of power and how they are interpreted. Debord was a situationist international, which meant creating situations or creating situations. Referring to the several theses in Debord s novel I can say that the society of the spectacle ...is not a collection of images; rather, it is a social relationship between people that is mediated by images (Derbord, 12). This shows that it is not only a result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consumable survival must increase, in fact, because it continues to enshrine deprivation. The reason there is nothing beyond augmented survival, and no end to its growth, is that survival itself belongs to the realm of dispossession: it may gild poverty, but it cannot transcend it (Debord, 30). This explains that the people are consumers of illusions; it blindsides the people from reality and only allows them to only be aware of what society or social media wants them to know. In Michel Foucault s, Power/ Knowledge , there are two chapters titled Truth and Power and The Eye of the Power . Foucault s conception of power is that power is everywhere. Everyone has power and has the ability to make use of their power, but often times citizens don t make use of their power. It seems that they are in fear of those who enforce their power already, which prevents them to make use of their power. An everyday individual sees power to be in the hands of who the people have chosen . We should not always think about power as the private property of government or state, but rather as an equal common ground for all of those who share the land. It is not the state that doesn t matter, but the power is bigger than the state; although the state has power, it does not have all power. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Wildfire Pollution An estimated 212 million people in the United States live in an area affected by wildfire pollution (Knowlton, 2013); a number that, due to global climate change, will only continue to rise (Westerling et al., 2006; Settele et al., 2014). The effects of exposure to wildfire smoke on human health are hard to quantify because the long term effects often go unnoticed. One estimate for global premature death rate due to exposure of wildfire smoke is 399,000 persons annually (Johnston et al., 2012). There are many serious health risks associated with exposure to wildfire smoke, many of which remain poorly understood. A 2016 systematic review entitled Critical Review of Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke Exposure compiled information from multiple studies examining the health effects of exposure to wildfire smoke. The study reviewed every reference found within its search parameters over three databases, selecting for papers without potential biases including small sample size and unreliable smoke exposure assessment methods (Reid et al., 2016). The results of the remaining 103 studies were them compiled and compared to assess for the consistency of their findings (Reid et al., 2016). The study found that smoke from wildfires contains toxins such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter (PM) (Naeher et al. 2007). • 6. Building and Maintaining a High Level of Education There are two kids, both best friends. One of the friends, Dan, always does his homework and gets A s on pretty much all of his tests and other assignments. The other friend, Fred, usually forgets that he was assigned homework and sleeps through most of his classes, getting C s on most of his tests and assignments. They each live in a four person household, each having a ordinary mom, dad, and a sibling. Dan has a close relationship with a few of his favorite teachers and Fred could not care less about conversing with his teachers. Both boys grew up in similar circumstances and have been friends for as long as they can remember, but the boys each have different motivators and values in the effort they put into their education and future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This helps them (the students) strive for a better and more in depth schooling on their favorite subject. The value teachers place upon education is also an important factor in a student s future. Hickam s teacher, Miss. Riley, only wants to inspire her students, even if it is just one student; and she does so. She sees Homer for what he could do and not for what he should do, as most people in town believe. Teachers are not there for students to fail, they become a teacher because many want to help aid students in further education or spark interest that maybe some students have not found yet, especially in college. Teachers have the power to motivate their students positively (Wilhelm 29). The value that parents place upon education for their kids is important because kids model the teachings of their parents more often, learning what they (the parents) think is important as their (the students) own importance. • 7. The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma Essay The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma With earthquakes on the rise, we must figure out the cause of them and determine a solution to help limit or even prevent them from occurring. Since early 2009, earthquakes have been sweeping across the state of Oklahoma, causing many people to worry about their own well being. Many scientists speculate the source of the earthquakes might be a result of Hydraulic Fracturing deep down in Earths crust. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which oil and natural gas companies pump up to millions of gallons of wastewater, sand, and chemicals down drilled holes in order to release pockets of shale within the earth. This use of technology is in question of the potential cause or inducement of earthquakes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Areas that have become a prime source for these quakes are being heavily surveyed for signs of structural damage along with potential changes and repairs by home inspectors. Seismologists have recorded that most Oklahoma earthquakes generally strike within the 2.5 3.0 magnitude on average. While some have been recorded to spike up much higher which could potentially cause structural damage to homes. Earthquakes of large magnitude have the potential to create large scale destruction to homes, which do not meet building code requirements for earthquakes of this magnitude. It has implications for calculated risks of seismic hazard, and it will have an economic impact on the state if people have to start building to more stringent design standards (Brus). Many scientists from around the country believe there may be links to the earthquakes for hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which millions of gallons of wastewater are pumped deep down in the earths crust to break down rock releasing pockets of shale. This process is very important to the oil industry. It is our leading method of obtaining oil and natural gas from the earth. America has a very poor image when it comes to the oil industry. • 8. The Dome Of The Rock In Ravenna, Italy Great pieces of architecture like The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy are important to Byzantine and Islamic Art. Both structures were not just places of worship, but showed the power of the men behind them and the growth of the culture at this time. San Vitale which was constructed under the Bishop Ecclesius around 540 to 548 A.D. and was erected to show the power and achievements of Emperor Justinian. The banker Julius Argenteus provided the funds for San Vitale, and it was dedicated to Bishop Maximian. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bishop was also in charge of building two other churches, San Michele and Santa Maria, but San Vitale is larger in scale than these two churches, designed as a centrally planned octagonal two story congressional church (Tronchin and Knight 130).The church features two centric octagons. The dome covered inner octagon rises above the surrounding octagon to provide the interior with clerestory lighting (Gardner and Kleiner B: 255). This octagon shape brings the parishioners to the center of the church, allowing them to become part of the service, which is not found in a traditional church. The dome is constructed on eight piers and arches which are surrounded by an ambulatory and a gallery. Much of the inside is marble and gold and the church walls have many windows to let the sun in to shine on this gold. Light filtered through the alabaster paned windows and plays over glittering mosaics and flowing marble (Gardner 255) which shows the beauty and lavish pieces Justinian put into this construction, even though the outside is dull and made mostly of bricks. However, this becomes another difference concerning these two monuments. The dome of San Vitale shows the Roman influence, with a figure of Christ, marbles and glittering galleries and the Dome of the Rock features a more ordinary approach with geometric shapes and calligraphy as well as extraordinary colors used in Islamic ... • 9. Importance Of Descartes On Physiology Hitherto, I have explained some elements concerning Descartes and vitalistic theories about physiology. On the one hand, I have highlighted that Descartes approach to physiology is founded on his mechanical conception of nature, which allows him to use the laws of nature in order to explain the particular functioning of the human body. In general, Descartes argues that God creates matter in a uniform way and he separates it, creating individual bodies, through the introduction of motion in the system. Accordingly, Descartes conception of matter denies the very possibility of the existence of certain individual properties of matter, on the assumption that every matter particle has been created in the same way and is affected by the same laws. Thus, Descartes explains that the laws of nature have a broad scope, and their universal application is based on the metaphysical conception of the regularity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, in his World, Descartes explains that heat and light are explicable in terms of the motion of the particles which constitute the flame or the Sun the luminescent bodies of nature. In his description, Descartes argues that When flame burns wood or some other similar material, we can see with the naked eye it sets the minute parts of the wood in motion and separates them from one another, thus transforming the finer parts into fire, air and smoke, and leaving the coarser parts as ashes (AT XI, 7). Clearly, this mechanical explanation contradicts the vitalist conception of the qualities of the bodies which make them flammable. In vitalistic terms, the capacity of burning a body has is explained because of a quality in it which makes it flammable: a heat quality or a light quality explains the presence of this visible effects in bodies like the Sun or a flame. For Descartes, this positions are nothing but the result of a productive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam... The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great change in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly toward colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most of all women, and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help them to rebuild their identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can be used to examine it from different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain s Testament of Youth, for example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own diaries and letters sent from around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a woman s perspective during the war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary source and a collection of stories all looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo in particular and it provides multiple views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a secondary source, as the book is a collection of her own essays and thus likely has notes of personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing in the facts and somewhat journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. The book represents Russia and the Soviet Union under communist party rule also, it exemplifies any human society. The farm gets over run by animals who feel neglected by their owner Mr. Jones. One night Mr. Jones got drunk and forgot to feed the animals. In this story the animals are given human like abilities suck as speaking English. The eldest pig, Old Major shares his dream of all animals living together in freedom with no humans to control them. The unambiguous truth of the matter is that Old Major, plays a significant part in the play because after he passes away the other animals come together to fulfill his goal of a revolution. The first point to consider is, Old Major affects the action that takes place in the book by his ability to persuade the other animals to share his indignation. Although he does not appear often, he plays one of the most important roles. After Mr. Jones passes away the animals have the ambition to rebel and the revolution begins. They begin to clandestinely plan out their rebellion. Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Works Cited Not Included Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a story that brings one to question the code of honor that exists in the Columbian town. Marquez paints a picture that shows how societal values, such as honor, have become more important than the inherent good of human life. The Vicario brothers belief that their sister was done wrong was brought upon by this honor, along with racial and social tension. The dangerous path of both honor and religious faith caused Santiago s untimely death. Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario said. It was a matter of honor (Marquez 56). The narrator explained that most of those who could have done something to prevent the crime and did not console themselves with the pretext that affairs of honor are sacred monopolies, giving access only to those who are part of the drama (114). If the medieval idea that death brings honor is true, then it is safe to say Santiago Nasar died without honor for he did not know the reason for his death was. The Vicarios were poor Hispanics and the Nasars were rich Arabs, so social and racial tension was clear. In the town though, honor is not defined by race or color. The Vicario brothers are cousins to Santiago, yet when Santiago died the Arab families were perplexed and sadâ?¦but none harbored the ideas of vengeance (94). After they killed Santiago, the brothers went to the parish house, not for repentance, but because they would be safe from the Arabs (91) and were comforted by the honor of having done their duty, and the only thing that worried them was the persistence of the smell [of death] (91). Before their release, their mother Pura asked Father Amador to confess her sons in jail, but Pedro Vicario refused, and convinced his brother that they had nothing to repent (95). Eisenhower brought attention to the military industrial complex , a term that is used to describe how the government uses private industry to meet its various demands during war or peace. Since World War I and World War II, the United States has witnessed a greater connection between the public and private sectors as private industry pumped out the goods to keep the government and country going. Similarly, there were changes on the battlefield as now private contractors became common sights. All the terrestrial planets, such as Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, show evidence of volcanic activities in their past.1,2 Mars is the only location where budgetary and technological constraints permit access and is also considered as having had the most likely planet for sustaining life.1 5 The surface conditions of Mars presently appear hostile to life,6 and thus we rely on evidence that the planet has been more hospitable to life in the past.7 such as the recent discovery of liquid water by NASA s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.8 The change to colder and drier conditions may have forced any ancient life to retreat into the subsurface.9,10 Alternatively, while Mars experienced significant volcanic activity, biological remnants may have been absorbed into ancient rocks, and some organic molecules as an indicator of life on Mars may still remain. • 17. Love And Love In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 Shakespeare wrote many sonnets about love, largely in a traditional sense. However, his 130th sonnet takes a different theme: a relationship that is found through true friendship and love despite physical beauty standards. Shakespeare uses contrasting values, natural and divine imagery and contradictory statements to show that love is much more than just physical attraction. Sonnet #130 is filled with nature imagery: Shakespeare mentions the sun, coral, snow and roses, all things that are largely deemed beautiful by society both then and now. In these images, he paints the idea of what a beautiful woman should look like, how the woman he thinks of loving looks like she s from a fairy tale. The nature images are described as being absent from the woman Shakespeare loves, rather than being given an opposite, implying that the woman he loves is by no means someone he cannot love or look upon. Though many interperet the mistress of this sonnet to be an ugly woman due to some other lines of the poem, this absence of an opposite seems to suggest otherwise: she is not an ethereal beauty, simply a normal, plain looking woman who the sonnet s speaker loves despite how she may look. Shakespeare uses more imagery in this sonnet than just things found in nature. Though there are only two instances of it, he also uses imagery of the divine. It occurs once in the last quatrain ( I grant I never saw a goddess go ), and once in the poem s final couplet ( And yet, by heaven, I think my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Within the Mowgli story, the theme of imperialist oppression is conveyed primarily through the Law of the Jungle as Kipling uses Baloo, the Bandar log and Shere Khan symbolically as justification. Both Nag and Nagaina meet the same fate as Shere Khan to further reinforce this notion as they die and imperial oppression triumphs. The character of Rikki Tikki Tavi also holds symbolism within the scheme of Indian colonisation as he is subject of colonial rule, employed to protect and defend his white masters (Nyman 207). The mongoose sacrifices his traditional role to live under colonial rule, a choice encouraged as the narrator states that every well brought up mongoose always hopes to be a house mongoose some day (Kipling). For both Rikki Tikki Tavi and his masters to live, the antagonists, those who resist imperial oppression, must die. This is explicit as Nag knows that mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later for him and his family (Kipling), once again justifying imperial oppression even without the Law of the Jungle . These movies consist of young, naïve, and beautiful princesses doing what it takes to be freed from a bad circumstance and ultimately falling in love along the way. Is it sexist? In the real world, women have fought a long time for equal rights as men and are still fighting to overcome some disadvantages. Quantitative Arbitrage Trading Strategy Analysis Many financial instruments have exhibited mean reversion, such as US and global equities [1], commodities [2], foreign exchange rates [3] as well as volatility indices [19]. Moreover, some researchers have also found mean reverting process to be very useful in modeling the interest rate and default risk dynamics [20]. In financial industry, some practitioners even attempt to profit by constructing mean reverting prices which are usually known as statistical arbitrage or pair trading. Statistical arbitrage is a more sophisticated trading strategy that evolved out of the simpler pairs trade strategy [4]. In the pairs trading, two highly correlated stocks are put into pairs and when one stock outperforms the other, we short this stock and long the other stock. Unlike the pair trading, Statistical arbitrage usually considers a basket of hundreds or more stocks, long in some and short in others, in order to construct a mean reversion portfolio. The pairs/statistical arbitrage trading strategies have gained great popularity with the invention of exchange traded funds (ETFs), as some ETFs are created to track the underlying indexes/assets. The mean reverting spreads among commodity ETFs have already been investigated and the trading strategies have been developed for statistical arbitrage [21]. Moreover, the mean reverting spread between physical gold price and gold ETFs has also been investigated [22]. Given the dynamics of the underlying portfolio or assets, investors have to ... These dynasties all provided an impact to each doctrine; the philosophy that had the greatest impact was legalism because it ended the Warring States Period, provided structure, and strengthened agriculture, and the military of China. The stratum corneum is the tough superficial layer of the skin, which is bound by non nucleated cells called corneocytes. Corneocytes are keratin bundles bound by proteins and lipids. Lipids are necessary for the skin to function as a barrier in order to maintain moisture levels in the skin (WHO, 2009). Chronic atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inherited genetic skin disease which typically begins in childhood and is characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Genetic defects in the production of filaggrin are the basis of dry skin and a risk factor for developing AD. Histamines produce1 the sensation of itch and are released into the skin as an immune response, triggered by inflammation. AD creates inflammation in the skin by autoimmune abnormalities, even without the presence of a bacteria, virus, or irritant. This chronic disease may be controlled through medical treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The autoimmune nature of AD causes an attack on the skin, and inflammation causes a release of histamine into skin tissues as an immune response to inflammation (Handout on Health, 2013). Histamine increases itchy sensations that may be suppressed temporarily by scratching. Scratching disrupts the action potential signals of itch in a specific area, but scratching skin causes lichenification and excoriations. Lichenification is thick, leathery skin, and excoriations are superficial skin abrasions (Itching, n.d.). Chronic dry skin is another cause of itch, and both are both symptoms of AD (Del Rosso, 2011). The effects of scratching enhance the immune response, and symptoms worsen when ... The book starts out strong and extremely informational, slows down extremely in the middle chapters and ends in theory, which is somewhat thought provoking. Moving on now with the pro s and con s of Kerwin s book Rulemaking. The pro s: Unlike many other public administration texts and especially those dealing with admin law, Kerwin used many current policies and procedures. By this text being more up to date it allows the readers to associate more current affairs. It brings to the table many examples within the Clean Air Act and Medicaid. The cases and explanations are thoroughly defined and easy to follow. Kerwin also discusses strategies chosen by various Presidents, and Congressional members to control the rulemaking/policy making powers of various agencies. He discusses everything from writing extremely specific laws that limit the powers of the agencies so that they cannot stray from the path that Congress intends for them, to threatening to reduce agency budgets if they do not comply. The con s: The author put a lot of patriotic cheesiness into this book in many places. The biggest spot would have to be Chapter 5: Participation in Rulemaking. It makes one want to go grab a democracy flag and be patriotic. For example, page 159 paragraph three states, Comments from the public, alert agencies to gaps in their knowledge and provide them with an understanding of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Ratio Of Coke s Current Ratio Current Ratio The first of the liquidity ratios is the current ratio. The current ratio is the number of times that current assets exceed current liabilities. It is calculated by dividing the company s current assets by their current liabilities. In most circumstances, the higher the current ratio, the better. The ratio is an excellent indication of the company s ability to pay its short term debts. A decline in the current ratio could imply that the company is having trouble generate cash, it could also be a result of increases of short term debt, and/or a decrease in current assets. An improvement in the current ratio implies that the company has an increased ability to pay off current liabilities. As current ratio declines, the overall risk increases, and as it improves, the risk declines. From 2013 to 2014, Coke s current ratio dropped from 1.13 to 1.02 before rising to 1.24 in the most recent year of 2015. However, compared to Pepsi s ratio of 1.31, Coke s current ratio is lower. To increase their ratio to be more competitive with their benchmark, Coke could use long term borrowing to pay off some of their current liabilities. Quick Ratio Next for the liquidity ratios is the quick ratio. The quick ratio, also called the acid test ratio, is a more accurate test of liquidity than the current ratio because inventory is excluded from current assets. Liquid assets are assets that can easily be converted into cash or cash equivalents. Inventories are considered to be the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Body Integrity Identity Disorder 1. Introduction Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID, also known as apotemnophilia and xenomelia) is a rare condition in which the person experiences a strong feeling of overcompleteness with four limbs, causing an intense desire for amputation (1,2). Instead of a wish for amputation there may also be a desire to paralysis (3). These individuals do not suffer from delusions or psychosis, and fully understand the bizarre nature of their desire (2,4). At this time BIID is not included in the ICD 11 or DSM 5, causing this condition to be unknown by psychiatrists, neurologist and surgeons. Therefore there is no effective pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatment option available (2). Only the requested amputation itself seems effective, but for ethical reasons those amputations are not preformed in regular healthcare (3). As a result BIID individuals often avoid healthcare and express their desire by pretending to be disabled or, in extreme cases, by eventually performing self amputation (4 7). The lifelong desire of an individual to be physically disabled may be considered incomprehensible by many. However, for BIID individuals the strong sense that their anatomical self as an able bodied person is inappropriate and that they were meant to go through life as a disabled person is constantly present and cannot be suppressed (3). This feeling becomes manifest in early childhood and remains throughout life (5). Although this phenomenon is very rare and prevalence rates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
