The Impact Of Macro And Competitive Business Environments
Owning a business, or managing, within a business, can be a challenging process and ultimately effect
the success, failure and bottom line. There are many external forces, or environments, that influence
decisions that are ultimately made by Board of Directors, executives, supervisors and management
teams. This can have an economic effect locally or ultimately have a global reach. Today s focus is on
the differences between the macro and competitive business environments (Jones et al., 2006).
Microenvironment
A macro business environment is inclusive all elements, that are out of the business control, that has
direct and relative influence on strategic planning and goals. The microenvironment, includes current
and any changes in local, state, federal and international laws and regulations. Laws and regulations
literally dictate how a business regardless, of its sector, the guidelines of its operations. The state of
the economy, consumer market and spending trends are also a major factor in the macro environment
equation. The purchasing power, of the consumer, is vital for any business sector to succeed. In today
s technology driven society, it is utmost importance, that a business is, within the established
perimeters of technology for their industry, or on the cusp of the cutting edge of technology. If a
business has effective and efficient technology, across the board, in force, it can potentially cut costs
and drive consumers to them. A business demographics

A Song For Lya Analysis
George R.R. Martin s A Song for Lya follows two telepathic lovers, Robb and Lyanna, who are pulled
apart by their want and yet inability to understand each other. Published in 1974, it and won the Hugo
Award for Best Novella in the following year. The story explores the connectivity between individuals
and society. The origins of literature are people telling their own stories in order to create a sense of
community. George R.R. Martin highlights the genesis of literature by telling a story of human nature
that is set within a much larger story.
Set on a planet, the novella depicts the Shkeen, an alien race that practices a cult like religion. They
live their lives in service to the Ghreeshka, a parasite that consumes their bodies. When a ... Show

Before the genesis of writing, people s stories were often personal stories and with that, the culture of
a society was shown through the characters and setting. For example, Of Mice and Men tells the story
of George s and Lenny s friendship; however, it is only a meter within the song of the American
Depression. Many fantasy stories, such as Lord of the Rings, work well because the characters and the
setting have culture as characters and stories that do not have the same depth often fall flat. The same
is true for A Song for Lya. Many science fiction and fantasy stories universes only extend as far as the
story will take them, making them appear superficial. The novella, on the other hand, is part of George
R.R. Martin s Thousand Worlds universe, in which humans have battled an alien race called the
Hrangan Minds and have colonized to different planets. Despite there being no war in the story, there
is culture to the story. The telepathic culture that Robb and Lyanna are both part of is vain and when
the protagonists visit the culture of the Shkeen, they are humbled not only by the different language,
food, and religion, but also by their superiority in telepathy and

The Supply And Demand Curve
A shift on the supply and demand curve will subsequently effect pricing, an example of this is the
increase of coffee supply in 1998. Using data collected by the ICO, it is found that supply of coffee
increased from 99,550 (in thousand 60 kg bags) in 1997/8 to 108,858 (in thousand 60 kg bags) in
1998/9. This can be explained due to an increase in suppliers with the addition of Yemen, Guyana and
Loa, this will affect total production by increasing coffee producing countries, whilst simultaneously
adding competition to the market consequently encouraging other exporting countries to increase
productivity and therefore increasing supply. This increase in supply with an unchanged demand shall
lead to a decrease in price. Alongside this 1998 saw the beginning of a decline in labour costs,
information obtained by the ICO states that, the price paid to growers of coffee in Tanzania was at
90.70 (US cent/lb) when previously in 1997 it was up at 118.52 (US cent/lb). This could potentially be
due to the boost in supply increasing competition between exporting countries for the steady incline in
demand. Alternatively, it is possible the cheaper labour encouraged importing countries to invest in
higher quantities of coffee from exporting countries whilst labour prices where on the decline.
Furthermore, consumer demand in coffee in importing countries only marginally increased from
64,904 in 1997 to 66,566 in 1998. This incline can be explained by an increase in population and

Technology Enhanced Simulation Training With Debriefing
BACKGROUND: Innovations within the healthcare industry related to scientific and technical
advancements often lead to changes in healthcare delivery. To cope with these changes, it is necessary
to prepare and train healthcare workers to improve employees knowledge and the quality of care.
Limited clinical experience with the mechanical ventilation approach, like high frequency oscillatory
ventilation (HFOV), makes its implementation difficult in the real critical care world. The authors
investigated the effectiveness of technology enhanced simulation with debriefing in improving
participants confidence level, cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in using SensorMedics
3100B high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in adult patients. METHODS: This is a quasi
experimental research design with pre and post tests. The educational strategy involved technology
enhanced simulation training with debriefing. The population included critical care respiratory
therapists, residents, fellows and attending physicians at Rush University Medical Center. RESULT:
Twenty six participants were included for data analysis; 12 respiratory therapists and 14 critical care
physicians. There were almost an equal number of females (53.8%) and males (46.2%). The
improvement was statistically significant in cognitive knowledge test score with p value .05; t (25) =
3.91. The mean for post psychomotor skills test score was 3.15 (SD = .88) and the mean for pre test
total score was 2.35 (SD=

A Brief Note On The Cms Hospital Quality Initiative And...
1. What is Hospital Compare?
Hospital compare is a tool that is part of the CMS Hospital Quality Initiative and has information
about the quality of care that is provided to its consumers. There are more than 4,000 Medicare
hospitals throughout the country that use this tool. This initiative was developed to assure quality
health care for consumers through the use of public disclosure as well as accountability of healthcare
staff. It is intended to allow consumers to make better decisions about what hospital they choose to
receive health care based on the level of quality of care the hospital provides. With that said, the
initiative encourages hospitals, providers, and clinicians to provide better quality of care for their
patients.

The payments are compared with the national average for each of these conditions. Furthermore, the
payment measures along with the patient outcomes are used to assess the hospital s value of care.
3. Further explain the information that can be viewed about:
1) Timely and effective care measures
2) Readmission, complications, and deaths
Timely and effective care measure data shows how fast and how often common conditions and care
such as heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, ED care, preventive care, children s
asthma care, stroke care, blood clots prevention and treatment, and pregnancy and delivery care are
being evaluated by hospitals and are being recommended for treatment. Each condition has its own set
of quality measures that every (Medicare) hospital should abide by.
Heart attack has 6 quality measures. The first one focuses on what the average in minutes is for a
patient to be transferred to another facility to be treated for a heart attack in the event the facility does
not have the proper resources to treat that patient. The time is measured from the moment the patient
arrived to the ED to when he/she was transferred out. The second quality measure focuses on how
quickly an EKG is ordered for a patient who is having a heart attack. In order to meet this measure, an
EKG should be ordered within 10 minutes of arrival. The third quality measure focuses on what the
percentage was of those patients who were

Mannequin Head Research Paper
It is amazing that mannequin heads put on the hats, wigs, sunglasses, jewelry and make up everybody
needs, yet many merchants still do not understand their importance. They can be made to be similar to
many people types and are almost always built completely to scale. Made from foam, plastic, and
vinyl, mannequin heads are most frequently used to model hats. Rather than waste the funds and space
to display hats with full size mannequins, mannequin heads are clearly more ingenious and they can
be grouped jointly to display more than a few hats on a small table space. Any sort of mannequin head
will do this job better than a full size mannequin. If a vendor would really similar to show shoppers a

Determinants Of The Crisis Of Colander s A Manifesto For...
Though there are numerous determinants that resulted in the Financial Crisis of 2008, wage stagnation
for the majority of Americans and increasing income inequality are among the most influential. The
housing bubble that was fueled by subprime lending and indebtedness was a subsequent result of these
two determinants. This essay will analyze the two factors (income inequality and wage stagnation)
that contributed to the onset of the crisis, factors that are prolonging the crisis expressed from the
position of Colander s A Structural Stagnation Policy Dilemma and A Manifesto for Economic Sense
as well as provide a link between inequality and unemployment. Ultimately, this analysis will evaluate

Moreover, as the top percentage of Americans accumulated more wealth, the remaining percentage
(primarily the middle class) wages stagnated. This furthered the income inequality between the
wealthy elite those who had the financial means to significantly influence politics and the middle and
lower classes those who struggled to maintain the basic welfare of their families and their social
standing. As the gap increased and financial policies began to benefit primarily the top percent of
wealthy Americans, the remaining percentages were forced to spend more for critical services like
education and health care even though their wages were stagnated. This resulted in households
spending larger portions of their incomes and saving less for the long run. Debt accumulation for
middle class and lower class households rose significantly in the decades prior to the crisis. (Within
the financial sector, debt rose from 22 percent of GDP in 1981 to 117 percent in 2008). As households
spent more and saved less, they began relying heavily on loans and speculation to sustain their
spending. The housing market in the late 1990s and early 2000s became the primary focus of spending
with banks giving out loans for houses far beyond the financial means of the one s acquiring them. As
J. D. Wisman asserted in Wage Stagnation, Rising Inequality, and the Financial Crisis, the housing
market was greatly stimulated by very low interest rates

discriminated against by Aryan Germans. The 1936 Berlin Olympics were not righteous, fair, or

The Four Primary Design Principles Of Service Oriented...
One of the four primary design principles of service oriented architecture is service reusability is one
of the design principles that are most commonly incorporated within the service model process. The
text defines service reusability as being responsible for defining the inventory blueprint, grouping
logic within the contexts of proposed agnostic service candidates and refining functionality (Thomas,
2008). The goals of a traditional system does not differ much from this model, because they both
focus on identifying and refining functionality. The next most commonly incorporated design
principle is service autonomy. The service autonomy process involves gathering and analyzing
information about the system in order to prevent future mishaps. ... Show more content on

I worked for a company named Fleet Management Expansion, which was responsible for maintaining
equipment readiness, data management systems and reporting. One of the issues that we dealt with
was linking our host systems to our client systems in real time. The equipment that we had was
separated by different unit ownership. Sometimes the equipment was located in separated areas from
the main location. In these instances, we had to set up client data management systems that displayed
in real time with the host systems. Setting this up in a top down sequence would not be feasible for
this operation, because the main focus is not on the subsystem (client), the host has to be set up
properly before the focus could lean toward the client. If the client system had to be reverse
engineered in order to setup the host system, then the top down model would be sufficient. In our case
we used the bottom up model to set up our data management systems. We made sure that all the
details were covered at the host level first and then moved on to the client. We made sure that the time
zone was in sync, oracle was set up properly in order for the systems to interface and the data that was
in the systems was input correctly. Afterwards, we made a backup of the host system and loaded it on
the client system; allowing changes to be made on both ends in real

A Metaphorical View into Kindred In Kindred by Octavia Butler, Dana is subject to many different
wounds all over her body; the more involved Dana becomes in the story the more damaging the
wounds are to her everyday function. These wounds, their severity, and their position represent certain
emotional and mental scars in Dana made by her travels into the 1800 s.The most severe of these
wounds and the bait of the novel, since it is the opening chapter and I am awaiting for this scene
throughout the book, is the losing of her left arm. Losing such a vital part of one s body can be

(239). Self inflicted wounds for Dana at the beginning of the novel might have been an improbability
but as the story progresses it become an almost certainty, this is one reason why this wound was so
significant for Dana, the only thing the reader does not know is when she will make the leap. This
wound is larger to Dana mentally than physically because it first shows how far she was able to go in
order to stop the pain and to end all her problems. Second, because the wounds won t hurt her after
they heal and they are big enough to be intrusive with her day to day life, yet they are significantly out
in the open to serve as reminders of her changes. The scars that will come from the slits will surely
remind Dana of how horrible the past can be and how it far it can push a person no matter how strong
their character is. Furthermore, it shows Dana that no matter how bad your past can be it was
necessary for someone to be the way they are or in her case the reason that she exists. Finally, we are
brought back to that scene in the hospital that the novel opened with, the reader sees that when Dana is
thrown back into the 1900 s after killing the very person she was sent to protect, she appears with her

Multilingualism And Language Shift
A language shift occurs when the people in a particular culture or sub culture change the primary
language that they use for communication (wiseGEEK, n.d). According to Ravindranath (2009),
language shift is the process by which a speech community in a contact situation that is consisting of
bilingual speakers increasingly stops using one of its two languages prefers by other. Tsitsipis (n.d.)
states that when a language is shifting its structural phases do not remain together even though this
holds also true for normal language change. From a purely linguistic of view, one has to find out
which particular changes are due to the influence of the dominant language and which could be

Bhatia (2013), states that bilingualism and multilingualism is an interdisciplinary and complex field .
As is self evident from the prefixes (bi and multi ), bilingualism and multilingualism phenomena are
devoted to the study of production, processing, and comprehension of two or more languages,
respectively. Bilingualism is a specific case of multilingualism, which has no ceiling on the number of
languages a speaker may dominate. The timing and sequence in which one learns each of the
languages has led to other distinctions between kinds of multilingualism. Much of the linguistics
literature, for example, identifies native language or mother tongue as a first language, ignoring the
possibility or diminishing the value of having more than one native language or mother tongue. Such a
person is often referred to as a simultaneous bilingual, while someone who acquires the second
language after the first one is often referred to as a sequential bilingual ( early if between early
childhood and puberty, and late if after puberty). The context of language acquisition leads naturally to
distinguishing between informal bilinguals, who acquire their languages outside of formal settings like
schools, imitating the natural processes of acquiring the mother tongue, and formal bilinguals, who
generally learn the language in schools or similar settings. When these terms apply to groups, one
speaks of bilingual or multilingual communities or nations. The aggregate enumeration of the speakers
in these groups (also referred to as language diversity or demography) will often profile the number of
monolingual and bilingual speakers of each language. For example, there may be a multilingual
community in which speakers are monolingual in each of three languages. This would be rare, and the
language groups would probably be isolated from each other. More often than

Immigration involves small drastic changes in culture. The challenges that occurred are the results
from an attempt to assimilate into the life of the new system. Sometimes language barrier can lead to a
difficulty in assimilating into the new culture. Sometimes, the difficulty arises from the cultural
identities that parents possesses from the previous life and the will to perpetuate this to the young. In

1960s Counterculture Movement
The Time of Rebirth: Counterculture Movements Woodstock, psychedelics, and Rock n Roll were all
a major point in the 1960s counterculture movement. Many icons like Janis Joplin rose to their fame
during this era. The hippie movement, even 60 years later, is a major landmark in history and pieces of
the past can be seen in many different ways. Why are counterculture movements so infamous and
what purpose do they serve? Do counterculture movements establish a certain principle or are they
simply a rebellion against society? I feel as though counterculture movements take place for a reason.
Counterculture movements are more than a rebellion and help bring out the issue that everyone tends
to keep quiet about. Without counterculture movements, societies would be forced to stay within the
limits of what others dictate as right or wrong. The beginning of the 1960s was a time of economic
growth and a time of prosperity ( Sex, Drugs, and Rock N Roll 00:01:59). Important things came out
of the decade, for example civil rights. The decade itself was a time of movement for not only blacks,
but also for women and those who sought a life outside of social norms. Feminism in the 60s and the
civil rights movement both fed into the historical 1960s counterculture movement. The historical
counterculture movement began to simmer throughout the sixties and slowly came to a head. Things
really started to give way to the movement when teenagers began to think differently than their

All businesses are affected by national and global economic factors. National and global interest rate
and fiscal policy will be set around economic conditions. The climate of the economy dictates how
consumers, suppliers and other organizational stakeholders such as suppliers and creditors behave
within society.
An economy undergoing recession will have high unemployment, low spending power and low
stakeholder confidence. Conversely a booming or growing economy will have low unemployment,
high spending power and high stakeholder confidence.
A successful organization will respond to economic conditions and stakeholder behavior. Furthermore
organisations will need to review the impact economic conditions are having on their competitors and
respond accordingly.
In this global business world organisations are affected by economies throughout the world and not
just the countries in which they are based or operate from. For example: a global credit crunch
originating in the USA contributed towards the credit crunch in the UK in 2007/08.
Cheaper labour in developing countries affects the competitiveness of products from developed
countries. An increase in interest rates in the USA will affect the share price of UK stocks or adverse
weather conditions in India may affect the price of tea bought in an English café.
A truly global player has to be aware of economic conditions across all borders

Shopping At An Outlet Mall
1. One of the themes of this chapter is that shopping at an outlet mall is work, not leisure. What is
meant by this? 1. Chapter 4 suggests that shopping at an outlet mall is work, rather than leisure, in
several ways. First, Shell mentions that outlet malls are located well outside population centers. This
causes would be shoppers to drive sometimes an hour or more to shop at an outlet mall. She mentions
that visiting the outlets demands an investment in time, deliberation, and energy beyond what we
invest in most other leisure activities (Shell 91). Furthermore, Shell also uses several images
throughout the chapter that convey a sense of work at an outlet mall; she conjures up images of all that
time, all that gas (Shell 91), and most customer look exhausted and not what you d call fashion
forward (Shell 97). This suggests that shopping in this form is a labor instead of a leisure activity.
Apart from exercise, what activity that induces exhaustion is considered a leisure activity? Leisure
activities are supposed to be enjoyable, and unlike exercising to exhaustion, shopping to exhaustion
does little to improve one s figure. However, the outlet mall experience has been marketed as cost
saving even though its foundation is sunk costs. 2. What is your favorite outlet mall and why do you
like this mall? 2. Shell actually mentions my favorite outlet mall by name. I grew up near the Vanity

The Detection Of Crime Has Improved Upon Throughout...
The detection of crime has been improved upon throughout history along with the criminal justice
systems. In the 1900s, the amount of crimes detected was extremely small when compared to the
crimes being committed. An example of an undetected crime, at the time, would be fraud. The action
of fraud was just as easy to commit as the action of lying.
In New York, after the civil war, there was an immense amount of wealth within the unclaimed acres
of land. It would only take one intelligent man, who knew the laws of the state, to create a profit out of
this opportunity. According to Arther Train, H. Huffman Browne was that intelligent man. A real estate
lawyer, Browne would forge countless documents for personal gain. Browne s quest for personal gain
began when he had discovered a plot of land leftover by a Swedish immigrant s death. Browne built
his business by being known to sell property at low costs. He knew he could use this unclaimed land
for his advantage. Browne s plan was to sell the land to the unintelligent civilians, thus insuring no
one would check the title for its background. However, this was not the case for the architect
Benjamin Leviton.
Leviton was a very clever man. Leviton knew something was suspicious when Browne offered him

Shakespeare s Sonnet 12 ( 1609 ) And George Herbert s...
This essay will address the theme of death in Shakespeare s Sonnet 12 (1609) and George Herbert s
poem Virtue (1633). Both Shakespeare and Herbert explore notions of death in their poems, in terms
of the tension between the psychical and the spiritual in a religious context. However, where they
differ is that Shakespeare places emphasis on the importance of the corporeal, and of what is left
behind on earth after death. In contrast, Herbert focuses on the impermanence of the physical, instead
advocating a focus on the eternal life of the soul in heaven.
In the late 16th and early 17th century, London was ravaged by the Black Death, causing many people
to ruminate on death and their mortality. Shakespeare was arguably affected also, indeed death as a
concept is a reoccurring theme within Shakespeare s work; prevalent through sonnets, tragedies and
medieval morality plays through the character of Death (Courtney, 1995). Shakespeare s Sonnet 12
explores the physicality of death, by describing the physicality and impermanence of the natural
world. In the first eight lines this is achieved in a traditional blazon format, perhaps to emphasise the
physicality of earthly life. The speaker ruminates on the temporality of life through the image of death
and decay and concludes that the only way in which to ensure immortality is through procreation and
continuation of the family line, so that he may not be forgotten after death.
In the opening line, the speaker meditates on

Listening For A Recording Of An Opera
Listening to a recording of an opera is an altogether different beast, than seeing one in person. While
you can get a sense of the music and the style behind a piece from a recording, there is something
special about hearing it performed in person. Feeling the vibrations of the voices and orchestra,
observing the characters moving on stage, the variable highs and lows of every different performance;
all combine to form an experience vastly more complex and nuanced than simply listening to a
recording. The opera I saw was Verdi s Falstaff, as performed by the UW Madison University Opera,
on Sunday, November 13th. Falstaff is the last opera Verdi wrote and his interpretation of a
Shakespearean comedy. Originally set in the 1400s, this production of Falstaff was reimagined by
director David Ronis and dramaturg Steffen Silvis in 1930s Hollywood. It is the goal of this recreation
to make the opera more relatable and interesting for a more modern audience. This review will cover
how the performance did and did not meet my expectations, along with how resetting of the opera in
the 1930s worked in my eyes.
Falstaff was performed in the UW Music Hall, A small, unremarkable building near the base of
Bascom Hill that I have passed hundreds of times but never payed much attention to. When I use to
think of an opera theater, the picture I had in mind was a giant, gilded arena for the high end of
society. Even after learning the truth of early opera theatres build, the image persists.

Economies Of Scale And Scope
Economies of Scope:
Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at
lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where
production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for
new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why?
Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same
price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General
Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity
to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike
but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in
order to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar
purchase of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. The catch is that these finance
opportunities are usually done via a leasing arrangement from GE Finance. In recent year GE has
pursued a service strategy when it comes to selling aircraft engines. They sell what they call power by
the hour this enables the private firm to indirectly rent the engine turbines, in return the firm would
award GE with maintenance contracts on the engines. This

The African Freedom Movement
Caleb Renfroe
History of Civilization II
Ch.22 Question
Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or
restraint, and this idea of freedom is arguably one of the most sought after privileges throughout the
history of human existence. Wars have been fought over it, lives have been lost, song and poems and
works of literature have been written about it. Freedom is what defines our country here in America
today and it is the desire of the entirety of the human race. Although we may desire freedom and we
may take it for granted in today s society, it hasn t always been so easy to come by. The Indian
freedom movement and the African freedom movement both had their fair share of struggles before
achieving their desired state of freedom. Some of these struggles were common to both countries but
each also experienced difficulties unique to their own country as well.
One common thing between both India and Africa s freedom movements is their success in becoming
free nations under the rule of their own government rather than by a foreign countries. In India, the
movement began its success in 1885 with the establishment of the Indian National Congress (INC)
gained further traction under the leadership of Mohandas Gandhi and by 1947 colonial India became
independent. In Africa, the struggle against apartheid was one of success as well. The African freedom
movement gained began in 1912 with the African National Congress (ANC) and gained

Augustine s Letter To The Ephesians
The journey of Saint Augustine into finding his faith is depicted through his writings in Confessions.
Augustine was born in the year 354 AD in Hippo, a region in North Africa. Today, he is regarded to be
one of the most important influencers of the development of early Christianity. However, he is not a
typical saint; It took him years of philosophizing and experiential learning to be able to accept and
appreciate the Christian faith. Despite pressures from Augustine s religiously devout mother Monica,
who spent her life trying to sway Augustine in the direction of Christianity, Augustine firmly held the
belief that Christianity was far too simple to fulfill his spiritual desires. Augustine constantly wrestled

Paul s letter to the Ephesians is written while he is held in prison. He proposes a guideline based on
the gospel to explain how to live a life filled with God s grace. Paul writes that before the introduction
of Jesus teachings, people were trapped in a life of sin, hopelessness, and greed. Now, Jesus has
provided a way for people to manifest a new form of humanity. This humanity is meant to be
celebrated through God s grace. Although Paul is in prison, he is still able to look to God to help him,
while appreciating the gift of God s grace. This emphasized how Paul is a model for followers of Jesus
because he looks toward his faith to guide him through a troubled time. Paul sets up a conclusion to
his letter by comparing the principles of an old humanity versus the desired principles of a new
humanity. For example, Paul encourages truth over lies, peace over anger or hatred, and forgiveness
over retribution. In other terms, Paul is discouraging sinful attributes and encouraging the attributes
that will lead to living a faithful life under the word of God. Paul concludes his message to the
Ephesians with a passage that provides a summation of what it takes to live life as a devout and true
follower of Jesus. He writes, Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the

Ancient Greece Democracy
Ancient Greece is often thought of as being the birthplace of democracy. However, by taking a closer
look at the modes of government, it is clear that many elements of democracy today were not present
in society. Democracy is viewed very differently today than it was looked at in Greece, with the
meaning of equality somehow changing over thousands of years. The ways that people participated
and were represented in government has also changed, and does not show many aspects of today s
democracy. With taking a closer look of the representation of ancient peoples, the role of women in
ancient Greek society is also not substantial. Ancient Greece was fairly democratic because of the
connections that ancient Greek government has to governments around the globe today, the
participation of the people, as well as the role women played. Today democracy is often known for
letting everyone have a say in government and letting people choose who represents them or letting
them represent themselves. Although some aspect of democracy are prevalent in ancient Greece, there
are exceptions which show how undemocratic life truly was. According to The Oration of Pericles

number of symptoms that usually coincide and are distinctive with issues relating to the respiratory
and cardiovascular systems of the body. This case based assignment will in order to assist in the

One of the chief complaints Mr Johns presents is shortness of breath, also known as dyspnoea whilst

uncomfortable breathing originating from an intricate interaction between physiological and
psychological factors (Yorke 2014). Mr Johns presents a respiration rate of 28 breaths per minute,

The ARAM is a memory storage area which performs two main functions. The first of its functions is
to store data concerning the layout of a song. This data contains information such as which voices will
be played at what time, specifications concerning a song s rhythm, dynamics and structure, and any
other information which is used by the sound CPU when it produces sounds.
When compared to music in the mainstream musical industry, the ARAM can be seen as the musical
score which musicians read in order to gain the information to play a song. Since the ARAM stores a
song s structure, increasing the size of the ARAM will obviously have a profound effect on the overall
length and the variations in structure of a particular song. The result is that an increase in
ARAM will yield songs which are longer and contain more variations within its structure. These
changes are particularly important in video games since quot;a monotonous melody which repeats
every few seconds can lead to boredom and even frustration in a player. quot;1 Therefore, video game
programmers are now becoming more and more aware that programming long varying songs can keep
a player from becoming bored and switch to another game. Thus, this partially increases a player s
liking of a particular game.
The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in a song. Sound,
like many other things which occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a

The Subculture Of Craft Beer
1. What is the subculture s core purpose? What motivates, unifies and drives the members?

As a student of ethnography I was interested in this social phenomenon of craft beer in Cape Town,

standard, regular, cheaper beer.

A conclusion and discussion follows.
II. Sexual Misconduct In Peace Operations
The record of peacekeeper sexual misconduct has a long history stretching back as far as the UN
mission in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1992 (Simic, 2009, p. 396; Hebert, 2011, p. 124). The UN was ill
prepared for this behavior in peace operations. The UN Special Representative to Cambodia, Yasushi
Akashi infamously said in 1993 in response to peacekeeper sexual abuse of the local population: boys
will be boys (Neudorfer, 2014, p. 13). In 2000, the UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted Resolution
1325 to begin integrating more women into the peacekeeping process and mainstreaming a gendered
perspective in the organization (1325 ####). In 2002, the UNHCR and Save the Children UK issued a
report naming more than 40 humanitarian agencies exploiting refugees in West Africa, which served
as catalyst for the UN and other agencies to make more effective policies to combat sexual misconduct
(Spencer, 2005, p. 172). In 2002, the UN established the Inter Agency Standing Committee Task Force

UN Secretary General (UNSG) issued a bulletin in 2003 to establish a zero tolerance policy for sexual

Hearing Loss At A Patient
Abstract
Hearing aids are electronic devices that are used to enhance the hearing of a patient that has various
types of hearing loss. Loss of hearing for a patient has a huge impact on the quality of life in which
communication is a big part of every day. These needs are to be understood and addressed by the
nursing professional and healthcare team to enhance safety in daily activities of a hearing impaired
patient. The importance of the nursing professionals to be educated in the assessment, types, care,
interventions and safety of the hearing devices is imperative. Nursing professionals need to use the
knowledge of the hearing aids available, how to safely use the device and the proper care for their new
device provided it is prescribed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Weber and Rinne test are used to determine if hearing is normal or if conductive and
sensorineural hearing loss are present. The Rinne test compares air and bone conduction hearing; the
test consists of striking a 512 Hz tuning fork at the base of the mastoid bone (located behind the ear)
(Lewis et al., 2011) and is a time interval test. Time interval is when bone conduction sound is heard
longer than or equal to air conduction with conductive hearing loss and with sensorineural hearing loss
the air conduction is heard longer than the bone conduction in the affected ear (Devitt, (n.d.). Since
there are different types of hearing aids, external and internal this assessment is a valuable tool for the
physician to determine what may be best for each specific patient. For the external hearing aids it has
been determined by research printed in the American Journal of Audiology that fitting hearing aids
bilateral instead of monaural will often result in better patient compliance (Lavie, Banai, Attias, Karni,
2014). Bilateral fittings usually have a lesser risk of noncompliance and enhancing a better outcome
for the patient. Nurses can provide referral sources for a patient who is in need of additional support
services that nursing cannot provide. Such as when a patient fails a hearing screening and when
hearing aids are not functioning or ill fitted. By collaborating with the others in the healthcare team
there will be enhancement of the patient s health and

  • 2. The Impact Of Macro And Competitive Business Environments Owning a business, or managing, within a business, can be a challenging process and ultimately effect the success, failure and bottom line. There are many external forces, or environments, that influence decisions that are ultimately made by Board of Directors, executives, supervisors and management teams. This can have an economic effect locally or ultimately have a global reach. Today s focus is on the differences between the macro and competitive business environments (Jones et al., 2006). Microenvironment A macro business environment is inclusive all elements, that are out of the business control, that has direct and relative influence on strategic planning and goals. The microenvironment, includes current and any changes in local, state, federal and international laws and regulations. Laws and regulations literally dictate how a business regardless, of its sector, the guidelines of its operations. The state of the economy, consumer market and spending trends are also a major factor in the macro environment equation. The purchasing power, of the consumer, is vital for any business sector to succeed. In today s technology driven society, it is utmost importance, that a business is, within the established perimeters of technology for their industry, or on the cusp of the cutting edge of technology. If a business has effective and efficient technology, across the board, in force, it can potentially cut costs and drive consumers to them. A business demographics ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Song For Lya Analysis George R.R. Martin s A Song for Lya follows two telepathic lovers, Robb and Lyanna, who are pulled apart by their want and yet inability to understand each other. Published in 1974, it and won the Hugo Award for Best Novella in the following year. The story explores the connectivity between individuals and society. The origins of literature are people telling their own stories in order to create a sense of community. George R.R. Martin highlights the genesis of literature by telling a story of human nature that is set within a much larger story. Set on a planet, the novella depicts the Shkeen, an alien race that practices a cult like religion. They live their lives in service to the Ghreeshka, a parasite that consumes their bodies. When a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the genesis of writing, people s stories were often personal stories and with that, the culture of a society was shown through the characters and setting. For example, Of Mice and Men tells the story of George s and Lenny s friendship; however, it is only a meter within the song of the American Depression. Many fantasy stories, such as Lord of the Rings, work well because the characters and the setting have culture as characters and stories that do not have the same depth often fall flat. The same is true for A Song for Lya. Many science fiction and fantasy stories universes only extend as far as the story will take them, making them appear superficial. The novella, on the other hand, is part of George R.R. Martin s Thousand Worlds universe, in which humans have battled an alien race called the Hrangan Minds and have colonized to different planets. Despite there being no war in the story, there is culture to the story. The telepathic culture that Robb and Lyanna are both part of is vain and when the protagonists visit the culture of the Shkeen, they are humbled not only by the different language, food, and religion, but also by their superiority in telepathy and ... • 4. The Supply And Demand Curve A shift on the supply and demand curve will subsequently effect pricing, an example of this is the increase of coffee supply in 1998. Using data collected by the ICO, it is found that supply of coffee increased from 99,550 (in thousand 60 kg bags) in 1997/8 to 108,858 (in thousand 60 kg bags) in 1998/9. This can be explained due to an increase in suppliers with the addition of Yemen, Guyana and Loa, this will affect total production by increasing coffee producing countries, whilst simultaneously adding competition to the market consequently encouraging other exporting countries to increase productivity and therefore increasing supply. This increase in supply with an unchanged demand shall lead to a decrease in price. Alongside this 1998 saw the beginning of a decline in labour costs, information obtained by the ICO states that, the price paid to growers of coffee in Tanzania was at 90.70 (US cent/lb) when previously in 1997 it was up at 118.52 (US cent/lb). This could potentially be due to the boost in supply increasing competition between exporting countries for the steady incline in demand. Alternatively, it is possible the cheaper labour encouraged importing countries to invest in higher quantities of coffee from exporting countries whilst labour prices where on the decline. Furthermore, consumer demand in coffee in importing countries only marginally increased from 64,904 in 1997 to 66,566 in 1998. This incline can be explained by an increase in population and customer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Technology Enhanced Simulation Training With Debriefing BACKGROUND: Innovations within the healthcare industry related to scientific and technical advancements often lead to changes in healthcare delivery. To cope with these changes, it is necessary to prepare and train healthcare workers to improve employees knowledge and the quality of care. Limited clinical experience with the mechanical ventilation approach, like high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), makes its implementation difficult in the real critical care world. The authors investigated the effectiveness of technology enhanced simulation with debriefing in improving participants confidence level, cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in using SensorMedics 3100B high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in adult patients. METHODS: This is a quasi experimental research design with pre and post tests. The educational strategy involved technology enhanced simulation training with debriefing. The population included critical care respiratory therapists, residents, fellows and attending physicians at Rush University Medical Center. RESULT: Twenty six participants were included for data analysis; 12 respiratory therapists and 14 critical care physicians. There were almost an equal number of females (53.8%) and males (46.2%). The improvement was statistically significant in cognitive knowledge test score with p value .05; t (25) = 3.91. The mean for post psychomotor skills test score was 3.15 (SD = .88) and the mean for pre test total score was 2.35 (SD= ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each condition has its own set of quality measures that every (Medicare) hospital should abide by. Heart attack has 6 quality measures. The first one focuses on what the average in minutes is for a patient to be transferred to another facility to be treated for a heart attack in the event the facility does not have the proper resources to treat that patient. The time is measured from the moment the patient arrived to the ED to when he/she was transferred out. The second quality measure focuses on how quickly an EKG is ordered for a patient who is having a heart attack. In order to meet this measure, an EKG should be ordered within 10 minutes of arrival. Though there are numerous determinants that resulted in the Financial Crisis of 2008, wage stagnation for the majority of Americans and increasing income inequality are among the most influential. The housing bubble that was fueled by subprime lending and indebtedness was a subsequent result of these two determinants. This essay will analyze the two factors (income inequality and wage stagnation) that contributed to the onset of the crisis, factors that are prolonging the crisis expressed from the position of Colander s A Structural Stagnation Policy Dilemma and A Manifesto for Economic Sense as well as provide a link between inequality and unemployment. Moreover, as the top percentage of Americans accumulated more wealth, the remaining percentage (primarily the middle class) wages stagnated. This furthered the income inequality between the wealthy elite those who had the financial means to significantly influence politics and the middle and lower classes those who struggled to maintain the basic welfare of their families and their social standing. As the gap increased and financial policies began to benefit primarily the top percent of wealthy Americans, the remaining percentages were forced to spend more for critical services like education and health care even though their wages were stagnated. This resulted in households spending larger portions of their incomes and saving less for the long run. Debt accumulation for middle class and lower class households rose significantly in the decades prior to the crisis. (Within the financial sector, debt rose from 22 percent of GDP in 1981 to 117 percent in 2008). As households spent more and saved less, they began relying heavily on loans and speculation to sustain their spending. The housing market in the late 1990s and early 2000s became the primary focus of spending with banks giving out loans for houses far beyond the financial means of the one s acquiring them. As J. D. One of the four primary design principles of service oriented architecture is service reusability is one of the design principles that are most commonly incorporated within the service model process. The text defines service reusability as being responsible for defining the inventory blueprint, grouping logic within the contexts of proposed agnostic service candidates and refining functionality (Thomas, 2008). The goals of a traditional system does not differ much from this model, because they both focus on identifying and refining functionality. The next most commonly incorporated design principle is service autonomy. I worked for a company named Fleet Management Expansion, which was responsible for maintaining equipment readiness, data management systems and reporting. One of the issues that we dealt with was linking our host systems to our client systems in real time. The equipment that we had was separated by different unit ownership. Sometimes the equipment was located in separated areas from the main location. In these instances, we had to set up client data management systems that displayed in real time with the host systems. Setting this up in a top down sequence would not be feasible for this operation, because the main focus is not on the subsystem (client), the host has to be set up properly before the focus could lean toward the client. If the client system had to be reverse engineered in order to setup the host system, then the top down model would be sufficient. In our case we used the bottom up model to set up our data management systems. We made sure that all the details were covered at the host level first and then moved on to the client. We made sure that the time zone was in sync, oracle was set up properly in order for the systems to interface and the data that was in the systems was input correctly. Afterwards, we made a backup of the host system and loaded it on the client system; allowing changes to be made on both ends in real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These wounds, their severity, and their position represent certain emotional and mental scars in Dana made by her travels into the 1800 s.The most severe of these wounds and the bait of the novel, since it is the opening chapter and I am awaiting for this scene throughout the book, is the losing of her left arm. Self inflicted wounds for Dana at the beginning of the novel might have been an improbability but as the story progresses it become an almost certainty, this is one reason why this wound was so significant for Dana, the only thing the reader does not know is when she will make the leap. This wound is larger to Dana mentally than physically because it first shows how far she was able to go in order to stop the pain and to end all her problems. Second, because the wounds won t hurt her after they heal and they are big enough to be intrusive with her day to day life, yet they are significantly out in the open to serve as reminders of her changes. The scars that will come from the slits will surely remind Dana of how horrible the past can be and how it far it can push a person no matter how strong their character is. Furthermore, it shows Dana that no matter how bad your past can be it was necessary for someone to be the way they are or in her case the reason that she exists. Finally, we are brought back to that scene in the hospital that the novel opened with, the reader sees that when Dana is thrown back into the 1900 s after killing the very person she was sent to protect, she appears with her arm inside, and ... • 16. Multilingualism And Language Shift A language shift occurs when the people in a particular culture or sub culture change the primary language that they use for communication (wiseGEEK, n.d). According to Ravindranath (2009), language shift is the process by which a speech community in a contact situation that is consisting of bilingual speakers increasingly stops using one of its two languages prefers by other. Tsitsipis (n.d.) states that when a language is shifting its structural phases do not remain together even though this holds also true for normal language change. As is self evident from the prefixes (bi and multi ), bilingualism and multilingualism phenomena are devoted to the study of production, processing, and comprehension of two or more languages, respectively. Bilingualism is a specific case of multilingualism, which has no ceiling on the number of languages a speaker may dominate. The timing and sequence in which one learns each of the languages has led to other distinctions between kinds of multilingualism. Much of the linguistics literature, for example, identifies native language or mother tongue as a first language, ignoring the possibility or diminishing the value of having more than one native language or mother tongue. Such a person is often referred to as a simultaneous bilingual, while someone who acquires the second language after the first one is often referred to as a sequential bilingual ( early if between early childhood and puberty, and late if after puberty). The context of language acquisition leads naturally to distinguishing between informal bilinguals, who acquire their languages outside of formal settings like schools, imitating the natural processes of acquiring the mother tongue, and formal bilinguals, who generally learn the language in schools or similar settings. When these terms apply to groups, one speaks of bilingual or multilingual communities or nations. The aggregate enumeration of the speakers in these groups (also referred to as language diversity or demography) will often profile the number of monolingual and bilingual speakers of each language. For example, there may be a multilingual community in which speakers are monolingual in each of three languages. This would be rare, and the language groups would probably be isolated from each other. More often than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chapter 4 suggests that shopping at an outlet mall is work, rather than leisure, in several ways. First, Shell mentions that outlet malls are located well outside population centers. This causes would be shoppers to drive sometimes an hour or more to shop at an outlet mall. She mentions that visiting the outlets demands an investment in time, deliberation, and energy beyond what we invest in most other leisure activities (Shell 91). Furthermore, Shell also uses several images throughout the chapter that convey a sense of work at an outlet mall; she conjures up images of all that time, all that gas (Shell 91), and most customer look exhausted and not what you d call fashion forward (Shell 97). This suggests that shopping in this form is a labor instead of a leisure activity. Apart from exercise, what activity that induces exhaustion is considered a leisure activity? Leisure activities are supposed to be enjoyable, and unlike exercising to exhaustion, shopping to exhaustion does little to improve one s figure. However, the outlet mall experience has been marketed as cost saving even though its foundation is sunk costs. 2. What is your favorite outlet mall and why do you like this mall? 2. • 30. Shakespeare s Sonnet 12 ( 1609 ) And George Herbert s... This essay will address the theme of death in Shakespeare s Sonnet 12 (1609) and George Herbert s poem Virtue (1633). Both Shakespeare and Herbert explore notions of death in their poems, in terms of the tension between the psychical and the spiritual in a religious context. However, where they differ is that Shakespeare places emphasis on the importance of the corporeal, and of what is left behind on earth after death. In contrast, Herbert focuses on the impermanence of the physical, instead advocating a focus on the eternal life of the soul in heaven. In the late 16th and early 17th century, London was ravaged by the Black Death, causing many people to ruminate on death and their mortality. Shakespeare was arguably affected also, indeed death as a concept is a reoccurring theme within Shakespeare s work; prevalent through sonnets, tragedies and medieval morality plays through the character of Death (Courtney, 1995). Shakespeare s Sonnet 12 explores the physicality of death, by describing the physicality and impermanence of the natural world. In the first eight lines this is achieved in a traditional blazon format, perhaps to emphasise the physicality of earthly life. The speaker ruminates on the temporality of life through the image of death and decay and concludes that the only way in which to ensure immortality is through procreation and continuation of the family line, so that he may not be forgotten after death. Economies Of Scale And Scope Economies of Scope: Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why? Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in order to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar purchase of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. Wars have been fought over it, lives have been lost, song and poems and works of literature have been written about it. Freedom is what defines our country here in America today and it is the desire of the entirety of the human race. The Indian freedom movement and the African freedom movement both had their fair share of struggles before achieving their desired state of freedom. Paul writes that before the introduction of Jesus teachings, people were trapped in a life of sin, hopelessness, and greed. Now, Jesus has provided a way for people to manifest a new form of humanity. This humanity is meant to be celebrated through God s grace. Although Paul is in prison, he is still able to look to God to help him, while appreciating the gift of God s grace. This emphasized how Paul is a model for followers of Jesus because he looks toward his faith to guide him through a troubled time. Paul sets up a conclusion to his letter by comparing the principles of an old humanity versus the desired principles of a new humanity. For example, Paul encourages truth over lies, peace over anger or hatred, and forgiveness over retribution. In other terms, Paul is discouraging sinful attributes and encouraging the attributes that will lead to living a faithful life under the word of God. Paul concludes his message to the Ephesians with a passage that provides a summation of what it takes to live life as a devout and true follower of Jesus. He writes, Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Ancient Greece Democracy Ancient Greece is often thought of as being the birthplace of democracy. However, by taking a closer look at the modes of government, it is clear that many elements of democracy today were not present in society. Democracy is viewed very differently today than it was looked at in Greece, with the meaning of equality somehow changing over thousands of years. The ways that people participated and were represented in government has also changed, and does not show many aspects of today s democracy. With taking a closer look of the representation of ancient peoples, the role of women in ancient Greek society is also not substantial. Ancient Greece was fairly democratic because of the connections that ancient Greek government has to governments around the globe today, the participation of the people, as well as the role women played. Today democracy is often known for letting everyone have a say in government and letting people choose who represents them or letting them represent themselves. Although some aspect of democracy are prevalent in ancient Greece, there are exceptions which show how undemocratic life truly was. Mr Johns, a 60 year old male has exhibited to his doctor a number of symptoms that usually coincide and are distinctive with issues relating to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of the body. This case based assignment will in order to assist in the treatment of Mr Johns, assist in diagnosing his conditions by; investigating the presenting features and its pathophysiology, analyse the results and importance of vital signs, physical inspection and blood tests, construct a differential diagnosis signifying likely conditions the patient may be experiencing , and finally providing a justification for further diagnostic tests. Signs and Symptoms One of the chief complaints Mr Johns presents is shortness of breath, also known as dyspnoea whilst he is resting. Breathlessness is a multidimensional and subjective experience of difficulty or uncomfortable breathing originating from an intricate interaction between physiological and psychological factors (Yorke 2014). Mr Johns presents a respiration rate of 28 breaths per minute, which is peculiarly elevated, and is specified as tachypnoea. • 39. Music In Video Games Essay Music In Video Games Throughout the history of the video game industry, there has been many changes concerning music in video games. Music in video games progressed greatly within the life of the industry from 1972 to the present. These progressions can be seen as improvements in quality which includes an increase in the number of output channels, an increase in song length, a great improvement in the quality of timbres, and also a general shift from non programmatic music to programmatic music which fits a game. If one takes a close look, one can see that all of these improvements are either directly or indirectly resulting from improvements in the technology which is used to produce video game music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ARAM is a memory storage area which performs two main functions. The first of its functions is to store data concerning the layout of a song. This data contains information such as which voices will be played at what time, specifications concerning a song s rhythm, dynamics and structure, and any other information which is used by the sound CPU when it produces sounds. When compared to music in the mainstream musical industry, the ARAM can be seen as the musical score which musicians read in order to gain the information to play a song. Since the ARAM stores a song s structure, increasing the size of the ARAM will obviously have a profound effect on the overall length and the variations in structure of a particular song. The result is that an increase in ARAM will yield songs which are longer and contain more variations within its structure. These changes are particularly important in video games since quot;a monotonous melody which repeats every few seconds can lead to boredom and even frustration in a player. quot;1 Therefore, video game programmers are now becoming more and more aware that programming long varying songs can keep a player from becoming bored and switch to another game. Thus, this partially increases a player s liking of a particular game. The other function of the ARAM is to store information which defines the timbres in a song. Sound, like many other things which occur in nature, actually consists of waves which travel through a medium ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. The Subculture Of Craft Beer 1. What is the subculture s core purpose? What motivates, unifies and drives the members? It s Friday night in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town and all the cool, hip young professionals are out to celebrate the start of the weekend. After doing a tour of the most popular and crowded bars, I found that all of these partygoers are drinking the same drink: Craft Beer. As a student of ethnography I was interested in this social phenomenon of craft beer in Cape Town, and even more so about this subculture of drinkers that would pay more for a craft beer, then a standard, regular, cheaper beer. Craft beer in this context refers to beer that has been brewed locally and has not been distributed by the mass market, for example SAB. After doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In America , Lowes Foods, a locally bent grocery store chain based in Winston Salem, North Carolina started selling Craft beer. They installed a Beer Den, where customers can sample beer and then buy a pint to drink while they shop. This was such a success that they implemented the same strategy in Whole Foods. The in store taps enable customers to taste different beers and provide opportunities for customers to meet the brewer; a strategy I believe will work well in South Africa. Adventure stores such as Cape Union Mart, Outdoor Warehouse and Due South could also partner with Craft Beer, buy selling it at their stores. Un Peacekeeping Has Become An Important Component Of Conflict UN peacekeeping has become an important component of conflict management across the globe, involving complex multi dimensional missions with mandates to help establish long and lasting peace. Peacekeepers represent and help implement the values of international community in their activities in conflict areas. Unfortunately, some peacekeepers have engaged in exploitative and abusive sexual relations with the beneficiary population that they serve. Often these transgressions followed by impunity for a myriad of institutional and cultural reasons. The efforts of the UN to address sexual misconduct are either curtailed by their competences as an organization or deficient. This study argues that the UN would benefit from a new approach ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A conclusion and discussion follows. II. Sexual Misconduct In Peace Operations The record of peacekeeper sexual misconduct has a long history stretching back as far as the UN mission in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1992 (Simic, 2009, p. 396; Hebert, 2011, p. 124). The UN was ill prepared for this behavior in peace operations. The UN Special Representative to Cambodia, Yasushi Akashi infamously said in 1993 in response to peacekeeper sexual abuse of the local population: boys will be boys (Neudorfer, 2014, p. 13). In 2000, the UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted Resolution 1325 to begin integrating more women into the peacekeeping process and mainstreaming a gendered perspective in the organization (1325 ####). In 2002, the UNHCR and Save the Children UK issued a report naming more than 40 humanitarian agencies exploiting refugees in West Africa, which served as catalyst for the UN and other agencies to make more effective policies to combat sexual misconduct (Spencer, 2005, p. 172). In 2002, the UN established the Inter Agency Standing Committee Task Force on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Humanitarian Crises (Hebert, 2011, p. 125). The UN Secretary General (UNSG) issued a bulletin in 2003 to establish a zero tolerance policy for sexual misconduct (Odello Burke, 2016, p. 840; Spencer, 2005, p. 172). • 45. Hearing Loss At A Patient Abstract Hearing aids are electronic devices that are used to enhance the hearing of a patient that has various types of hearing loss. Loss of hearing for a patient has a huge impact on the quality of life in which communication is a big part of every day. These needs are to be understood and addressed by the nursing professional and healthcare team to enhance safety in daily activities of a hearing impaired patient. The importance of the nursing professionals to be educated in the assessment, types, care, interventions and safety of the hearing devices is imperative. Nursing professionals need to use the knowledge of the hearing aids available, how to safely use the device and the proper care for their new device provided it is prescribed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Weber and Rinne test are used to determine if hearing is normal or if conductive and sensorineural hearing loss are present. The Rinne test compares air and bone conduction hearing; the test consists of striking a 512 Hz tuning fork at the base of the mastoid bone (located behind the ear) (Lewis et al., 2011) and is a time interval test. Time interval is when bone conduction sound is heard longer than or equal to air conduction with conductive hearing loss and with sensorineural hearing loss the air conduction is heard longer than the bone conduction in the affected ear (Devitt, (n.d.). Since there are different types of hearing aids, external and internal this assessment is a valuable tool for the physician to determine what may be best for each specific patient. For the external hearing aids it has been determined by research printed in the American Journal of Audiology that fitting hearing aids bilateral instead of monaural will often result in better patient compliance (Lavie, Banai, Attias, Karni, 2014). Bilateral fittings usually have a lesser risk of noncompliance and enhancing a better outcome for the patient. Nurses can provide referral sources for a patient who is in need of additional support services that nursing cannot provide. Such as when a patient fails a hearing screening and when hearing aids are not functioning or ill fitted. By collaborating with the others in the healthcare team there will be enhancement of the patient s health and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
