Aphorisms In The Film Boatlift
Supererogatory acts go above and beyond the call of duty. Epictetus reflects through many
aphorisms in The Handbook about heroism and how to tackle challenges set before you. The
documentary Boatlift depicts how many volunteers in extraordinary circumstance banded together
and went above the call of duty to rescue those in need on September 11th, 2001. Boatlift is the
story of many boating captions that couldn t stand idly by and watch their fellow man trapped in
Manhattan when the city of New York was attacked. Vincent Ardolina justifies his action with, A
person can t stand by and watch others suffer. Vincent and many others answered this self
proclaimed call of duty fully knowing that there are untold risks they were taking. Although... Show

Section forty four of Handbook centers around the superiority of one person to another, while
one may be more wealthy and able to afford more luxuries, the other may be more eloquent and
more persuasive, yet they are still identically human nonetheless. This means that superiority is
merely superficial and at the base of it we are equals. This is demonstrated no better than when
Vincent recounts the kind of passengers he had, We had housewives, workers that do windows,
we had executives and the thing that was the best, everyone helped everyone. In this time of
peril, social class, structure, and differences were dissembled and all actions were simply about
helping others. It was said that four executives passed an elderly, blind woman and her seeing eye
dog over the handrails onto the boat, which only furthers how people banded together to do what
was right. Everyone s sense of duty and morality heightened that day. Robin Jones, a deckhand,
seems hardly phased of how people worked to help each other, stating, They were just average
people, who stepped up when they needed

Bush The Bipartism Consensus Summary
Chapter 21 Carter Raegan Bush: The Bipartism Consensus
A.Thesis Statement:
Fundamental problems such as environmental deterioration, deepening economic insecurity for
much of the population, and a growing culture of violence and family disarray could not be solved
without bold changes in the social and economic structure.
Evidence used:
1. After President Bush took office, a government scientist prepared testimony for a Congressional
committee in regards to the dangerous effects of industrial uses of coal and other fossil fuels in
contributing to global warming. This ecological crisis in the world had become so serious that Pope
John Paul II rebuked the wealthy classes of the industrialized nations for creating that crisis. An

So much was poured into war efforts that little was left for the general people to strive on.
c) An additional source that would be helpful would be one from someone of the general
population. As victims of so much going into the war and hardly anything going to them, it would
be interesting to see and relate to their anger.
D. Observations/Questions:
1. Poverty causes stress on marriages as well as within a family. Hunger and lack of other
necessities led to frustration and strained relationships. Families were split and torn apart. And
when families fall apart, so does the nation. The family is the core foundation of teamwork,
cooperation, understanding, and commitment. And when people loose these things or aren t taught
them as children, there is bound to be chaos...and there was.
2. It s amazing what the work of one man can do to a country. President Ronald Raegan made the
choices to spend large amounts of money on military, yet almost completely ignored the social
atmosphere of his people. He favored the rich over the poor and middle classes, who constituted the
majority of the population. His choices ultimately caused economic, social, and political

As not all local authorities were keen to provide social housing, they found ways to sell their
housing stock. There was at that time legislation in place to enable this, but as the houses had
been built with government funds, these sales had to receive approval from the ministry of
health. These approvals were not forthcoming and, property prices were too high for many to
afford. The onset of WW1 impacted on sales during 1914 1938 due to restrictions and after
WW11 the acting Labour Government formerly opposed such sales. The Housing Act in 1952
revoked the Housing Act 1936 restricting requirement to obtain the best sale price for these
properties and between 1952 1979 the acting government granted various consents, in 1967, to
prevent under pricing, market value sale price was introduced and remains so to this day.
2.2The Right to Buy 1980 Contrary to popular belief Right to Buy existed under the
Conservative party before Margaret Thatcher was elected as party leader or indeed Prime
Minister. Over 370,000 properties were sold between 1952 and 1980, this was largely down to
the generous discounts offered and would have increased regardless of the introduction of the
Right to Buy legislation in1980. It is important to note that local authorities were restricted on
using monies generated by Right to Buy for rebuilding as these funds were reverted back to the
treasury and there was no policy in place to build

Why I Want To Travel Essay
Where do you most want to travel? Why? What is your favorite movie/T.V show? Why? If you
could travel back or forward in time, what year would it be? Why? During the assignment
interviewing the class I chose these three questions because I like when people ask me stuff like
this. I like to travel (even though I haven t traveled much). It s interesting to see why people
want to travel to the places they want to. It also gives you some ideas of places to travel. I
picked the movie one because I love watching movies, so it s pretty neat to see what kind of
movies or T.V shows other people like to watch. The travelin in time one I picked because well it
s a way to kind of get to know someone, it makes them think. It s also neat to see the responses
and what years they would like to travel to. It would be very awesome to be able to travel in time.
I was hoping just to find out some some information. I just wanted to see how people would
respond to these questions and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That they re funny, cute or they describe things that happen in real life. I sort of expected most of
these responses. There was one that did surprise me.I asked one person what their favorite
movie was and they responded with If I Stay; it reminds me of my childhood friend Ashley. In
the Movie the girl gets into an accident and falls into a coma that is the exact way my friend
died 2 weeks before the release of the movie. I was very surprised by this one respons. I would
respond just like this. My favorite movie is probably Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter. They are
my favorite movies because I grew up watching them. I just love them they are honestly the best
movies, the story line, the adventure it s just amazing and they have so many learning lessons in
them. There not just stupid movies about sex, drugs, etc. They have a meaning to

Maximum Safe Velocity On The Car
Maximum Safe Velocity
Scenario 1
The two forces acting on the car when it turns a circular path are centripetal force, FCP , and
friction, Ff . As mentioned in Relevant Physics Topics, the direction of friction opposes the
direction of motion, which, in this scenario, is centripetal force, and because centripetal force
directs towards the center of the circle, friction directs outside of the circle (Madden et al., 2001).
To calculate the safe cornering speed on a level road, centripetal force has to equal friction so that
the vehicle isn t sliding in or out of the road. The formula was developed in Calculation 4 from the
Appendix.
The derived formula was v=в€
љ(Ојs*r*g)
By substituting the numerical values in the equation, the maximum safe cornering speeds were
calculated in following table: *Note: Ојs=0.9 is dry condition, Ојs=0.7 is wet condition
Scenario 2
In this scenario, a vehicle is turning right downwards an incline. In this case, the x component, of
the normal force is greater than centripetal force and the vehicle is wanting to slide down the
incline, towards the center of the curve. However, friction opposes the motion and pull the car up
the incline to keep the car from sliding (Stanbrough, 2006). This is shown in Diagram 3.
Before calculating the maximum speed of safe cornering, the angle Оё needs to be found. This was
done in Calculation 2 from the Appendix.
Using Оё, x and y components were found and substituted to solve v in Calculation 5.

William Butler Yeats Ageing Analysis
Living
(Three Messages from Sailing)
Who is William Butler Yeats? William Butler Yeats is regarded as one of the finest poets of the
century. Also, his return to the past as one would say has helped him to have a place in the future.
He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and Yeats was educated there and in London as well. The young
man was very immersed into the barren mountains, and in the mythology and the legends of
Ireland. From the Poetry Foundation stated, He belonged to the Protestant, Anglo Irish minority that
had controlled the economic, political, social, and cultural life of Ireland since at least the end of
the 17th century. After having this wonderful background that was full of experience Yeats wrote
some of the most famous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, the second message from Yeats Sailing, is what is really living. The idea is that as soon as
you were born you were dying. Which asks the question of what is really living. Some people
see a soul dragging around a corpse. Your soul wants to get out and be free. From the five life
changing thoughts stated, We have an ego, a personality, a history, preferences, dislikes, beliefs,
opinions, cultural viewpoints, and experiences. These ingredients comprise our person and our
worldly sense of self. But beneath all of these human ingredients lies one which is the
foundation of all of them. Without this ingredient, this avatar would not exist. This ingredient is
the soul. For me really living is doing things that make you happy. Because in life a person is
going to make mistakes and not be perfect but it s how you learn from them and how you make
your life better from the experience you had. From Sailing, Yeats, lines 21 25, Consume my
heart away; sick with desire and fastened to a dying animal. It knows not what it is; and gather
me into the artifice of eternity. All good things must die but it s about how you live and some
may say that right as you are born you are dying. But, if you look in a optimistic or pessimistic
view that s up to you. Lastly, the message from Sailing, Yeats, is being remembered. No matter who

Tittle of the work: Starry night
The Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Medium: Oil Support

The night sky portrayed by van Gogh in the Starry Night painting is overflowing with spinning
mists, sparkling stars, and a splendid bow moon. The setting is one that watchers can identify with
and van Gogh s whirling sky coordinates the watcher s eye around the sketch, with dispersing
between the stars and the bending forms making a dab to dab impact. These inner components

The craftsman conveyed the Mona Lisa with him until he kicked the bucket and was unmistakably
mindful of its criticalness.
After the artistic creation was delivered there were questions raised about the character of the
sitter. While a great many people concurred that it was Mona Lisa Gherardini, the spouse of
Francesco del Giocondo, a Florentine silk vendor, many individuals proposed it was, indeed, a self
representation, and the facial highlights take after a later self picture by Leonardo.
Mona Lisa is wearing plain clothing which is particularly not quite the same as different
ensembles painted at the time. She wears an abnormally dark, basic dress with a creased bodice,
with gold weaving. The dress has a low neck area that uncovered her chest. She is not wearing any
adornments and a scarf dangles from her left shoulder. There is a cover hanging over her
marginally muddled hair, accepted to be a grieving shroud.
The fine dull cloak that spreads Mona Lisa s hair is frequently accepted to be a grieving cover, a
bit of apparel worn to symbolize social position. However, the subject s dress is fairly basic and
standard and neither her outfit nor the scarf around her neck demonstrates her highborn standing.
In 1911 the Mona Lisa was

The Fountain House And New York
The first Clubhouse was Fountain House and started in New York in 1948 with the idea that
people with mental illness can effectively participate in their own recovery (The Fountain House,
n.d.). Former patients of Rockland State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in New York, began a self
help group and then formed WAWA (We Are Not Alone) (The Fountain House, n.d.). The first
official meeting of We Are Not Alone was held at the Third Street YMCA in Manhattan. It started
out as a support system for people with mental illness, but did not include treatment programs or
therapy. With assistance from supporters, they bought a building on West 47th street in New York
City. The fountain in the garden encouraged the name Fountain House (The Fountain House, n.d.).
This Clubhouse model has been replicated all over the world because it conveys the idea of
belonging, involvement, and connection (Clubhouse International, n.d.). The original model
became a local community center for people over the age of eighteen with mental illness. Its goal
was and still is for people with mental illness to reach their full potential (The Fountain House,
n.d.). Membership is open to anyone who has a history of mental illness. Being a member of
Fountain House helps people feel like they belong and are always welcomed. Also, Members have a
stake in the organization and they work together to attain a shared goal (Clubhouse International,

Eleanor Roosevelt And His Life
Eleanor Roosevelt was born October 11, 1884 in New York City to father Elliot Roosevelt and
mother Anna Rebecca Hall. Eleanor s mother was a debutante who was disappointed in Eleanor
s looks. It is even reported that she called her granny (Ward,1). Her mother died when she was 8
leaving her to be raised by her father. Elliot Roosevelt suffered from alcoholism and a narcotic
addiction. He was often not allowed to see her due to this condition and was committed to an
asylum in France in 1890( biography, 2). Her father also died when she was almost 10 years old.
She was then sent, along with her brother, to live with her maternal grandmother. This
relationship was more out of duty than love. As Eleanor grew up she learned three lessons she
was unattractive; no one s love for her was likely to last; and those whom she counted most
could be counted on to let her down. ( Ward,1). She found she enjoyed helping others and found
it an escape from her problems. At age 15 she began school outside of London at Allenswood
School. The founder, Marie Souvestre, of this school called Eleanor the most amiable girl I have
ever met (Cook, 110). She introduced Eleanor to helping people in need and taught her to think
for herself. Mare also took her traveling and showed her many impoverish countries. Before going
to Allenswood Eleanor went to a Covent School in Italy and prior to that was tutored by Frederic
Roser. All of these factors helped her become more caring about others than

Theme Of Death In Macbeth
Macbeth essay Death is often looked upon as the last stage of life. When a person physically dies
it is believed that their life ends at that moment, but is it really a valid statement? Can a person not
love on even after being physically dead? Shakespeare often shows this theme of physical and
spiritual death through the characters in his play, Macbeth. Macbeth is a play of treachery and war,
where punishment for treachery is execution, to where death at war is glorious, but one overlooked
aspect of spiritual death or the death of the Protagonist, Macbeth s soul. To convey this theme of
spiritual death, through Macbeth, and physical death, through other characters in the play,
Shakespeare vividly uses characters and language. In this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

finally begins to come out of the dark as the decline of Macbeth s character is more visible to the
audience. Through the play Shakespeare brings out a theme that forces the audience to ponder on

My Batiatry Personal Statement
From the beginning of my undergraduate career, I knew that I wanted to go into the medical field.
With thus being so, I wanted to start exploring all the possible options available to me through

internships and it was through these internships that I realized that I discovered the field of
podiatry and my interest in the field. I did 2 internships that were non podiatric medicine(hospital

specialties. It was through these internships that I shadowed paramedics, radiologists, physicians,
and physicianassistants. I also did 2 internships that was solely podiatric medicine based. While I

Organizational Structure And Functional Structure
How do you think your chosen company created their organizational structure? How is the
organizational structure reflected in the company culture?
The company I have chosen is the Department of Navy created their Functional Structure which
was based of learned lessons from past military employment history. The Navy s functional structure
provides organization according to a jobs or an individual s purpose within the organization.
Departments that focus on a single function or goal most easily recognize functional organizations.
For instance, an organization with a marketing department, a human resources department, a
research and development department and so forth, operates according to functional organization.
The functional structure provides employees, as well as their appropriate departments, with a clear
objective and purpose for their work. As an example, employees within a marketing department
know that their job is marketing and, as a result, those employees can focus on improving their
marketing work and even specialize in a specific area of marketing. On the other hand, functional
structure can create divisions between departments if a conflict develops between departments.
How is the company able to keep all the employees up to date on company strategies and tactics
within the current company dynamics? Is it effective?
Management sets objectives and charts a course of action so as to be proactive rather than reactive
to the dynamics of the business

Equality In Ayn Rand s Anthem
Anthem by Ayn Rand is a science fiction novel about the having the strength and own mind to
be a individual. In the beginning it starts off dark and you get the feeling everyone is strange.
Equality starts to do things different and rebels against his brothers. He develops feeling for a
female or the golden one. Equality learns that there is more to life and he gets his own mind to
thank for himself. Rand s novella Anthem observes that it is human native to thrive in a
individualists society rather than a collective society where being equal is genocide through the
following devices: Mood, Characterization, symbolism, and tone. Rand starts the mood of very
dark and foreboding. Equality starts if the book talking about sins we as humans have made. He

The World s Fight Against Microbes Essay
The World s Fight Against Microbes
Many infectious diseases that were nearly eradicated from the industrialized world, and newly
emerging diseases are now breaking out all over the world due to the misuse of medicines, such as
antibiotics and antivirals, the destruction of our environment, and shortsighted political action and
/or inaction. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are a group of diseases caused by viruses from four distinct
families of viruses: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for
most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods, and in some viruses, such as the Ebola virus, the
natural host is not known. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle ... Show

The patient develops chills, fever, headaches, muscle aches, and a loss of appetite. As the disease
progresses vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sore throat, and chest pain can occur. The blood
fails to clot and patients may bleed from injection sites as well as into the gastrointestinal tract, skin,
and internal organs (CDC I).
The Ebola virus is spread through close personal contact with a person who is very ill with the
disease, such as hospital care workers and family members. Transmisson of the virus can also occur
from the reuse of hypodermic needles in the treatment of patients. This practice is common in
developing countries where the health care system is underfinanced (CDC I).
Until recently, only three outbreaks of Ebola among people had been reported. The first two
outbreaks occurred in 1976. One was in western Sudan, and the other in Zaire. These outbreaks
were very large and resulted in more than 550 total cases and 340 deaths. The third outbreak
occurred in Sudan in
1979. It was smaller with only 34 cases and 22 deaths. Three additional outbreaks were identified

What do the comments by the faculty tell you about INU s strategy?
There is no strategy, no concise vision, or supporting mission statement. Therefore, there is no
strategic architecture in place and the business school lacks sufficient human, information, or
organization capital (Kaplan and Norton, 2004) to address the faculty s concerns and issues. This
applies not only to the business school but to the university as a whole. Without these three

What would the effect be on productivity if the faculty received a 10 percent raise but continued to

The BSC framework lays out nicely how productivity can be measured. Because the BSC is built
around four perspectives (financial, customer, internal, learning and growth), productivity goals can
easily be developed, classified, and measured for each perspective. Exhibit 2 shows how
productivity can be measured utilizing the BSC framework (Pineno).

The No Child Left Behind ( Nclb ) Act Launching America s...
In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act launching
America s education system into an era of standardized testing as a method of holding states and
schools accountable for student achievement. With this recent surge of high stakes standardized
testing, teachers are held to increasingly higher expectations of quality instruction and meeting
these standards. However, schools are unprepared in achieving the goals of NCLB resulting in years
of struggle to improve student success in testing due to flaws in the traditional grading system.
Current schools and teachers lack proper grading practices that are inadequate of accurately
representing student achievement. With the increased focus on standards, it is imperative that
schools begin to implement an effective grading system so that all students and parents are
provided accurate feedback of students abilities.
There are myriad unforeseen consequences when schools use the traditional grading system. For
the past century, traditional grading practices and policies that have contributed to much of the
failure of student achievement. The use of the traditional grading system has slowly led to the
major issue of grade inflation. Most often students grade tend to be inflated with the help of non
academic factors such as homework, participation and student effort. High school teachers tend
include effort as part of the grade, giving high grades to students who work in class despite whether

Escapism in Children s Literature
Children s literature can take many forms, from far fetching science fiction to spell binding who
done it mysteries. One of the most popular ideas presented in these various forms is that of
escapism. The characters in these stories explore quite complex social issues in ways that are less
confrontational then realism. One might consider why escape is such a central theme; as a child
there are numerous benefits to fantasy, it allows readers to experiment with different views of the
world and takes hypothetical situations and invites them to make connections between this fictive
scenario and their own reality. John Stephens an English professor at Macquarie University has said
Fantasy writing operates through metaphor so that the unfamiliar is used to stand in for, or
comment upon, the familiar.
The use of metaphor in Fantasy makes it more open to different readings and meanings. Take
J.M. Barrie s fantasy novel Alice s Adventures in Wonderland as an example. Barrie uses his story
to transport Alice to an unknown world full of backwards words and talking animals. This allows
Alice to escape the boredom of picture less books and adult conversations that were beginning to
consume her. Similar in theory is Neil Gaiman s style of writing. Gaiman has produced a number of
Victorian influenced fantasy novels for children, including Coraline. Coraline, like Alice centers on
a young girl entering another world.
Escape can be seem in many books for children but one story in

Essay on Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy
According to the website www.cpal/geocities.org, I found some valuable information to help me
with my report about exceptionalities in students. This website was almost like a tutorial that
walked step by step through the disability, causes, and treatments.
I found that in definition the words Cerebral Palsy are used to describe a medical condition that
affects control of the muscles. Cerebral means anything in the head and palsy refers to anything
wrong with control of the muscles or joints in the body. If someone has cerebral palsy it means that
because of an injury to their brain (that s the cerebral part) they are not able to use some of the
muscles in their body in the normal way (that s the palsy part). Children ... Show more content on

Changes in muscle tone let us move.
In this website I also learned that there are several types of CP. I wrote the different types below to
help understand each one individually.
1. Spastic Cerebral Palsy
If muscle tone is too high or too tight, the term spastic is used to describe the type of cerebral
palsy. Children with spastic CP have stiff and jerky movements because their muscles are too tight.
They often have a hard time moving from one position to another or letting go of something in
their hand. This is the most common type of CP. About half of all people with CP have spastic CP.
2. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy
Low muscle tone and poor coordination of movements is described as ataxic CP. Kids with
ataxic CP look very unsteady and shaky. They have a lot of shakiness, like a tremor you might
have seen in a very old person, especially when they are trying to do something like write or turn
a page or cut with scissors. They also often have very poor balance and may be very unsteady
when they walk. Because of the shaky movements and problems coordinating their muscles, kids
with ataxic CP may take longer to finish writing or art projects.
3. Athetoid Cerebral Palsy
The term athetoid is used to describe the type of cerebral palsy when muscle tone is mixed
sometimes too high and sometimes too low. Children with athetoid CP have trouble holding

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni s novel, The Palace of Illusions is the epitome of feminism. It retells
the story of Mahabharata from the view point of Draupadi, the daughter of King Drupad. The
delicate threads of her life have beautifully been interwoven to bring forth a grasping story. Chitra
Banerjee has herself written I would uncover the story that lay invisible between the lines of the

her struggles and her triumphs, her heartbreaks, her achievements, the unique female way in which

prosperous kings of the continent Bharat was the father of Draupadi. The very birth of Panchali is
marked with revenge and redundant. An offspring of vengeance and an expected one she trails
after her brother Dhristadyumna out of the sacrificial fire and is often called as Yagnyaseni. She
was also known as Krishnaa because she was copper skinned, fiery eyed and had long black hair.
She was gifted with blue lotus fragrance and hence called Yojangandha. Her own father had not
expected her as he had long prayed to the Gods for a son to avenge Drona. Along with a dutiful son

Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides
Conversions of Alcohols to Alkyl Halides: 1 Propanol and 2 Pentanol Introduction One way
scientist gets alkyl halides is by using the manipulation of an alcohol. When alcohols are treated
with HBr or HCl; they can undergo a nucleophile substation reaction to generate an alkyl halide
and water2. Using the structure of the alcohols they are able to use SN1 or SN2 mechanisms.
For both these mechanisms though, the OH group must be pronated shown in Figure 1. R OH +
H Br+ R OH2 +Br Figure 1. This figure is the protonation of the OH group from the alcohol SN1
is a limiting mechanism that is a unimolecular nucleophic substation reaction. In this mechanism
it involves two steps, one in which the leaving group leaves and then forms a carbocation
intermediate, shown in figure 2. Then it is able to break bonds between carbon and making it
able for carbon to leave the group before the bond forming with nucleophile begins1. R OH2R+ +

These two species are involved in the rate determine step3. Once the nucleophile attacks, though it
is allowed to form a nucleophile, that then forms a transition state and then results in the final

The Origin Of Spain s Current Economic Crisis
On the Origin of Spain s current Economic Crisis
The economy of Spain has taken a downturn in 2011 since the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Unlike the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, where Spain was a global empire, modern Spain is
facing a very stagnant economy. Spain s unemployment rate reached a record of 27 percent in
2011. This shows that more than 1 in 5 Spaniards is struggling to feed their family. Luckily, things

Spain s historical glory did not prevent it from current economic crisis. Spain was the first global

This allowed Spanish people at the time to enjoy a cultural golden age during the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries; but this glorious moment did not last longer to prevent Spain s current
economic downfall. Despite suffering an economic downturn, Spanish empire remained the largest
in the world until the eighteenth centuries.

What caused the water to rise?
Hypothesis: (30 words max.)
A change in pressure inside the jar caused the water to rise.
Prediction: (30 words max.)
If the pressure in the jar remains atmospheric, then the water level will not rise.
Rational: (100 words max.)
Inside the jar, the flame consumed the oxygen and produced carbon dioxide until it ran out of
oxygen and the flame was extinguished. Since pressure is reliant on volume as seen in the formula
p=(NkT)/V, a change in the volume of molecules in the jar will also cause a change in pressure. If
the pressure inside of the jar becomes negative, it will force water into the jar to balance the
pressure gradient.

How Did Roman Culture Influence Greek Culture
1.During the Agricultural Revolution, humans began settling down in communities and farming.
The more the residents depended on farming, the more the population increased. This made it
harder to revert to the hunter gatherer lifestyle. Human waste also easily contaminated water in
settlements. 2.Settlements had storehouses to keep valuable items and food surplus. Inside
storehouses, surpluses were offered to the gods at the beginning of the harvest season. Food
surplus birthed accounting, writing, and the bureaucracy, for scribes recorded all contributions to
the storehouses. 3.Farming was adopted partly to preserve the beer supply. Beer also helped to

I Am A Great Or Horrible Thing
Flooding, depending on how one deals with it, can be a great or awful thing. The day after
Houston s historic flood started with gloomy gray skies, horrendous humidity, and me sitting on
the couch staring blankly at the T.V. The ecstatic voices of each advertisement after
advertisement filled my ears. This was supposed to be a day of excitement and fun but it seemed
as if the rain had destroyed those plans. I was leaving to New York for the summer and wouldn t
see my friends for months. Sick and tired of sitting down half the day, I called them up to see if
they had any idea of what we could do to spend this last day together. They came up with an idea
to make the most out of an otherwise terrible day. In no time they showed up, I was taken away in

When we arrived, the water was raging against the banks inching closer and closer to the

The Road That Led African Americans
The road that led African Americans to freedom in the United States was definitely not an easy
road by any means. It was indeed a stony road, and the chastening rod is used here to describe the
harshness associated with slavery and the masters cracking the whip, or rod. So much blood was
shed during this point in time, before Reconstruction (during the Civil War), and after
Reconstruction and the period leading up to the Harlem Renaissance. In fact, even after African
Americans had gained their freedom they still experienced abuse, inequality, and suffering at
the hands of their White counterparts. The Jim Crow Laws were enacted and in effect in the
South, which led to the mass migration to the North, and even in the North, Blacks still
experienced some indifference, though not on the same scale as they had in the South. In Lift
Every Voice and Sing, Johnson uses rhyming which of course is standard of most poetry. He also
uses simile in line five with his comparison of how the sound of joy should be loud like that of
the rolling sea. Lift Every Voice and Sing is both carefully and craftily composed, and uses vivid
imagery as well as religious theme, which is also prevalent in a majority of Johnson s works,
again displaying his strong Christian faith. This poem has become so well known, and so popular,
that it was recited by Reverend Joseph E. Lowery at the Inauguration ceremony of President
Barack Obama in 2009. In 2008 Rene Marie, a jazz musician substituted the words

The Mystery Of Iniquity By Lauryn Hill
The audience may think the top of their heads might blow off, when first hearing the song
Mystery of Iniquity by Lauryn Hill. The album that the song was on (MTV Unplugged No. 2.0)
went on to sell 5 million copies. Sure, there are females that rap, sure there are other ground
breaking studio productions that were a work of art in and of itself, and sure rappers use lyrics that
connect to relationships, politics, faith, and cultural criticism, but not like the famous Lauryn Hill.
The poetic devices in Lauryn Hill s Mystery of Iniquity reveal society s inevitable self destruction
through societal stigmas and stereotypes, justice system flaws, and religious references. To all the
people who said that hip hop had nothing important to say, and had not a lick of musical bone in
them, this song was a smack in the face to all the haters.
American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and actress, Lauryn hill, was born on May
26, 1975 and raised in South Orange, New Jersey. Hill being around her musical oriented family
encouraged her to began singing during her childhood. She is best known for her solo album The
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill which broke several sales records and won numerous awards. Also,
she is best known for being a member of the Fugees . With platinum selling and Grammy winning
award group (The Fugees ), Lauryn Hill broke through; but with her solo debut The Miseducation
of Lauryn Hill in 1998 she found herself to be a creative force on her

Springfield, Illinois, And The Springfield
Although Springfield, Illinois was home to Abraham Lincoln, not everyone shared his views.
Many people were racist and prejudice toward the colored community. Not all of people s thoughts
are purely their own, some are given from peers, family, or the media. Newspaper media in
Springfield, Illinois during 1908 had such a large influence on the events and thoughts of the
people, that they essentially caused the Springfield raceriot.
The Newspapers
In Springfield 1908, there were two major newspapers, The Illinois State Journal and The
Springfield Record. The Springfield Record and The Illinois State Journal were competitors
during Abraham Lincoln s presidential campaign. During 1908, both published racially intense
stories and highlight crime in black neighborhoods. Most of the white community who read
newspapers with racially intense stories were influenced by the words. Not everyone in
Springfield supported Lincoln in Springfield during the Civil War and his run for President. One
major newspaper during the Civil War and during the Springfield riots was The Springfield
Journal. The Journal kept citizens up to date on Lincoln s campaign. Every decision Lincoln made
during his campaign was published in The Journal. During the war and campaign, The Journal
supported Lincoln but turned against his views when the riots took place. Why is it that the
Journal has to make daily record of its confidence in the president elect. Is it to create or dispel
doubt? After the war,

Analysis Of The Essay Disability By Nancy Mairs
In the essay Disability, the author Nancy Mairs argues that the media portrays disabled people in
an unjust manner. Mairs supports her claim by first appealing to the reader s emotions, second
by proving her credibility as a disabled person, and lastly by appealing to the reader s sense of
logic. Mair s purpose is to prove that disabled people are just as normal as anyone else in order to
persuade advertisers to represent the disabled on television, newspapers, commercials,
advertisements, etc. Based on Mair s informal tone and diction, she is writing for the common,
intellectual audience who has the ability to make a difference in changing the views of the media
and non disabled people towards the disabled.
Nancy Mairs introduces her essay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By cataloging normal things she does on an everyday basis, she relates to her audience by
stating, I menstruate, so I have to buy tampons. I worry about smoker s breath, so I buy
mouthwash. I smear my wrinkling skin with lotions. I put bleach in the washer so my family s
undies won t be dingy. I drive a car, talk on the telephone, get runs in my pantyhose, eat pizza...
Mairs wants the reader to understand she has a disability, but she is still able to live a life that is
parallel to the people without her debility. In a similar way, Mairs uses repetition to emphasize
the shift is about herself and that her credibility is strong. Her persuasive tone stands out within
this paragraph, as well, due to her wanting the reader to distinguish how she can relate to them as
she deals with everyday life, considering her audience is not disabled. She demonstrates her
persuasive tone by asserting, Take it from me, physical disability looms pretty large in one s life.
But it doesn t devour one wholly. I m not, for instance, Ms. MS, a walking, talking embodiment of
a chronic incurable degenerative disease. Along with her catalog, Mairs uses empirical knowledge,
within the paragraph and quote, to explain her first hand account of being normal whilst being

We Don t Need Internet Censorship Essay
We Don t Need Internet Censorship
Censorship is an extremely controversial issue. There have been hundreds of thousands of essays
written about whether or not censorship on the Internet is right or wrong, but so far, no precise
conclusion has surfaced. I ve researched into the topic, but I haven t completely sided with one or
the other. There are just good reasons against censorship. This essay briefly discussessome reasons
why the Internet should be censored, but will then mainly focus on reasons why the Internet should
not be censored.
The most prominent issue dealing with censorship is the fact that there is child pornography readily
available. Besides the fact that children as well as adults shouldn t be able to ... Show more content

She believes that if we are using taxpayers dollars to pay for Internet access, then those institutions
also have an obligation to act to restrict this type of material. Buechner knows that there is illegal
material on the Internet, and it should be treated as such, but she understands that libraries are
obligated to meet the information needs of the entire community while upholding the First
Amendment.
On the other hand, there are many reasons against the idea of censoring the Internet. An article
from NBC.COM discusses that the Internet is not broadcast television or radio, but a
constellation of printing presses and bookstores. Therefore, it can t and must not be regulated any
differently from them. The article offers us the idea that most books will be available on the Net
because all public discourse will take place on the Net not too many years from now. If the First
Amendment in its full power is intended to apply only to paper, it

Deontological Ethical Analysis of Direct-to-Consumer...
Deontological Ethical Analysis of Direct to Consumer Pharmaceutical Marketing
In Deontological ethics, morality of an action is based upon the particular action s adherence to
moral laws independent of their consequences (DeGeorge 62). Direct to consumer marketing of
pharmaceuticals has had heated debate with logical arguments from those for, and for those against
allowing such practices to exist. I do not believe the marketing of the prescription medication to be
solely unethical but more of as a shade of grey in between ethical and unethical moral standards
dependent upon the actions of the individual pharmaceutical companies. Advertising to the general
public can be ethical if the medication truly benefits those in society ... Show more content on

This false sense of security held by the public at large leads the masses to believe in the complete
truthfulness of drug advertisements which could and will lead many consumers to not do their
research on a medication before seeking it out to get it prescribed.
The other area of moral concern for many is in regards to the safety of the general public. The
question being; is it safe for public health to allow pharmaceuticals to advertise and push new
drugs directly to the public? The answer to this isn t clear, in May of 2011 the Congressional
Budget Office released its study; Potential Effects of a Ban on Direct To Consumer Advertising of
New Prescription Drugs. The study was inconclusive, it stated that a moratorium on direct to
consumer advertising could benefit public health by providing more time for possible safety
problems with some drugs to be uncovered, but could also harm public health by delaying the
widespread adoption of useful new drugs (Procon.org).
From an ethical standpoint this depends upon the company advertising the product. If they create a
medicine to help relieve a certain ailment, as long as they disclose the facts, dangers, and risks of
the drug, I believe that they are doing a public service because the advance in modern medicine
can help society as a whole, but if a company produces a

Illinois Court Structure
They say justice is blind. Laws are made only to protect the interest of the wealthy. Anyone can
become a judge, one does not necessarily have to attend school to do so. These are just a few
myths about our judicial system, some of which that hold some truth, and others that are
inaccurate. In this paper, I will provide history about the type of court structure in Illinois, the
process in which judges and lawyers are selected within the state, and how judges and lawyers are
disciplined. To begin, Illinois was admitted to statehood in 1818. In its original Constitution, the
following was outlined: Every person ought to find a certain remedy in the laws for all injuries and
wrongs which he may receive in his person, property, or reputation; he ought to obtain by law right

In order to become a lawyer in Illinois, as I aspire to be, one must first attend an undergraduate
institute to obtain a degree. Next, for formal legal study, one must enter law school to obtain a
secondary degree called the Juris Doctor. However, before completing this, one must take the
Law School Admission Test (LSAT) as an entry exam to law school. The LSAT is offered four
times throughout the year, and consists of three sections which are: logical reasoning, analytical
reasoning, reading comprehension, and a writing sample. Hence, this test predicates how one will
perform in law school and often influences the school in which students are accepted. However,
upon graduation, one must pass the state bar exam. Even for this examination, there are a few
requirements under Rule 704 in the Supreme Court Rules: the person must be of twenty one
years of age, be of good moral character to practice law, has satisfactorily completed exams on
academic qualifications an responsibility as prescribed by the Board of admissions, and attend a
school on the approved list of the American Bar

How Did Monarchs Influence The Tudor Period
From nine days to forty five years, the reigns of the monarchs during the Tudor period were
different and impactful. This period in England between 1485 and 1603 was home to many of
the great monarchs, nobles, and civilians of the world. The monarchs in Tudor England shaped
the period that is known so well today for its culture and power. They controlled the religion,
military, and culture in a way that was unrivaled by anyone in their time. The monarchs shaped the
Tudor period into a time remembered for culture, war, and religion in a way that nobles and
civilians could not match. The Tudor period of England was home to many monarchs that each

Luther did not approve to stop selling certificates for forgiveness and made the Ninety five Theses.
The Ninety five Theses impacted the relationship people had with their government, church, and

One, free inquiry, democracy, and limited government. For free inquiry, Luther wanted
Christians and even other religions to believe in the truth and that they weren t given the
freedom of speech. To take the iconic example: slavery, which for centuries Christians had
assumed was a necessary evil or simply a fact of life. A few Protestants in the 1700s and many
more in 1800s reached a new conviction: that slavery was an absolute and intolerable evil. The
arguments and battles were bitter, but in the end the old orthodoxy was overthrown. Censorship
was worn down by Protestants refusal to shut up when told to, and by their bare knuckles style
of public argument (CNN, Ryrie). New natural sciences between the 16th and 17th centuries
were moved by the protestants colleges and scholars. They want put out that freedom of speech
and of worship were actually good things, not just unavoidable necessities to be tolerated (CNN,
Ryrie). In democracy, Luther wanted to be the lead of democracy. Protestants wanted good
social and order of monarchy. They wanted to be able to have their voices and freedom of speech
and be able to do things in their own hands. If we all stand equal before God, it is hard not to
conclude that we should all have a voice before this world s rulers (CNN, Ryrie). Thirdly, limited
government, Protestants have wanted and done taken over the government. Going back to

Loss Of Identity Paper
Loss of identity Identity is the all encompassing view of who you are as an individual and
contain many different parts such as your goals, values and beliefs as well as your standards for
behavior and decision making (Schwartz, Luyckx, Vignoles, 2011). Many individuals suffering

When an individual looses all the things in life that create meaning for them they are left with an

Research On Physical Activity Promotion
Problem Statement While research on physical activity promotion has historically been on the
impact of individual behavioral interventions, there has been substantial progress in identifying the
role of policymaking in creating population wide improvements in physical activity levels
(Brownson et al., 2007; Frank Kavage, 2009; Humpel, Owen, Leslie, 2002). As a result of the
increasing evidence of modifying the built environment through policyinterventions (Kahn et al.,
2002), the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH),
and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recommend these interventions as a means
of increasing physical activity in communities. Nevertheless, little is known about how to quantify
levels of policy implementationin order to understand and appropriately interpret policy outcomes
at the state and local levels (Ogilvie et al., 2010; Sallis, Story, Lou, 2009). A process evaluation of
the implementation of a state level physical activity plan is proposed to improve our understanding
of the mechanisms of policy implementation using a realist evaluation method.
Analytic Framework The need for evidence related to policy influences regarding physical activity
are increasing in importance as government, communities, and health professionals implement new
community wide interventions to address health concerns (Schilling, Giles Corti Sallis, 2009).
There is also growing acknowledgment that physical

upheaval of their Utopian like existence by the arrival of the Spaniards, the need to practice their

  • 2. Aphorisms In The Film Boatlift Supererogatory acts go above and beyond the call of duty. Epictetus reflects through many aphorisms in The Handbook about heroism and how to tackle challenges set before you. The documentary Boatlift depicts how many volunteers in extraordinary circumstance banded together and went above the call of duty to rescue those in need on September 11th, 2001. Boatlift is the story of many boating captions that couldn t stand idly by and watch their fellow man trapped in Manhattan when the city of New York was attacked. Vincent Ardolina justifies his action with, A person can t stand by and watch others suffer. Vincent and many others answered this self proclaimed call of duty fully knowing that there are untold risks they were taking. Although... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Section forty four of Handbook centers around the superiority of one person to another, while one may be more wealthy and able to afford more luxuries, the other may be more eloquent and more persuasive, yet they are still identically human nonetheless. This means that superiority is merely superficial and at the base of it we are equals. This is demonstrated no better than when Vincent recounts the kind of passengers he had, We had housewives, workers that do windows, we had executives and the thing that was the best, everyone helped everyone. In this time of peril, social class, structure, and differences were dissembled and all actions were simply about helping others. It was said that four executives passed an elderly, blind woman and her seeing eye dog over the handrails onto the boat, which only furthers how people banded together to do what was right. Everyone s sense of duty and morality heightened that day. Robin Jones, a deckhand, seems hardly phased of how people worked to help each other, stating, They were just average people, who stepped up when they needed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bush The Bipartism Consensus Summary Chapter 21 Carter Raegan Bush: The Bipartism Consensus A.Thesis Statement: Fundamental problems such as environmental deterioration, deepening economic insecurity for much of the population, and a growing culture of violence and family disarray could not be solved without bold changes in the social and economic structure. Evidence used: 1. After President Bush took office, a government scientist prepared testimony for a Congressional committee in regards to the dangerous effects of industrial uses of coal and other fossil fuels in contributing to global warming. This ecological crisis in the world had become so serious that Pope John Paul II rebuked the wealthy classes of the industrialized nations for creating that crisis. An international ... So much was poured into war efforts that little was left for the general people to strive on. c) An additional source that would be helpful would be one from someone of the general population. As victims of so much going into the war and hardly anything going to them, it would be interesting to see and relate to their anger. D. Observations/Questions: 1. Poverty causes stress on marriages as well as within a family. Hunger and lack of other necessities led to frustration and strained relationships. Families were split and torn apart. And when families fall apart, so does the nation. The family is the core foundation of teamwork, cooperation, understanding, and commitment. And when people loose these things or aren t taught them as children, there is bound to be chaos...and there was. 2. It s amazing what the work of one man can do to a country. President Ronald Raegan made the choices to spend large amounts of money on military, yet almost completely ignored the social atmosphere of his people. He favored the rich over the poor and middle classes, who constituted the majority of the population. His choices ultimately caused economic, social, and political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As not all local authorities were keen to provide social housing, they found ways to sell their housing stock. There was at that time legislation in place to enable this, but as the houses had been built with government funds, these sales had to receive approval from the ministry of health. These approvals were not forthcoming and, property prices were too high for many to afford. The onset of WW1 impacted on sales during 1914 1938 due to restrictions and after WW11 the acting Labour Government formerly opposed such sales. The Housing Act in 1952 revoked the Housing Act 1936 restricting requirement to obtain the best sale price for these properties and between 1952 1979 the acting government granted various consents, in 1967, to prevent under pricing, market value sale price was introduced and remains so to this day. 2.2The Right to Buy 1980 Contrary to popular belief Right to Buy existed under the Conservative party before Margaret Thatcher was elected as party leader or indeed Prime Minister. Over 370,000 properties were sold between 1952 and 1980, this was largely down to the generous discounts offered and would have increased regardless of the introduction of the Right to Buy legislation in1980. It is important to note that local authorities were restricted on using monies generated by Right to Buy for rebuilding as these funds were reverted back to the treasury and there was no policy in place to build ... • 7. Why I Want To Travel Essay Where do you most want to travel? Why? What is your favorite movie/T.V show? Why? If you could travel back or forward in time, what year would it be? Why? During the assignment interviewing the class I chose these three questions because I like when people ask me stuff like this. I like to travel (even though I haven t traveled much). It s interesting to see why people want to travel to the places they want to. It also gives you some ideas of places to travel. I picked the movie one because I love watching movies, so it s pretty neat to see what kind of movies or T.V shows other people like to watch. The travelin in time one I picked because well it s a way to kind of get to know someone, it makes them think. It s also neat to see the responses and what years they would like to travel to. It would be very awesome to be able to travel in time. I was hoping just to find out some some information. I just wanted to see how people would respond to these questions and... I would respond just like this. My favorite movie is probably Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter. They are my favorite movies because I grew up watching them. • 8. Maximum Safe Velocity On The Car Maximum Safe Velocity Scenario 1 The two forces acting on the car when it turns a circular path are centripetal force, FCP , and friction, Ff . As mentioned in Relevant Physics Topics, the direction of friction opposes the direction of motion, which, in this scenario, is centripetal force, and because centripetal force directs towards the center of the circle, friction directs outside of the circle (Madden et al., 2001). To calculate the safe cornering speed on a level road, centripetal force has to equal friction so that the vehicle isn t sliding in or out of the road. The formula was developed in Calculation 4 from the Appendix. The derived formula was v=в€ љ(Ојs*r*g) By substituting the numerical values in the equation, the maximum safe cornering speeds were calculated in following table: *Note: Ојs=0.9 is dry condition, Ојs=0.7 is wet condition Scenario 2 In this scenario, a vehicle is turning right downwards an incline. In this case, the x component, of the normal force is greater than centripetal force and the vehicle is wanting to slide down the incline, towards the center of the curve. However, friction opposes the motion and pull the car up the incline to keep the car from sliding (Stanbrough, 2006). This is shown in Diagram 3. Before calculating the maximum speed of safe cornering, the angle Оё needs to be found. This was done in Calculation 2 from the Appendix. Using Оё, x and y components were found and substituted to solve v in Calculation 5. Scenario 3 In scenario ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. William Butler Yeats Ageing Analysis Living (Three Messages from Sailing) Who is William Butler Yeats? William Butler Yeats is regarded as one of the finest poets of the century. Also, his return to the past as one would say has helped him to have a place in the future. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and Yeats was educated there and in London as well. The young man was very immersed into the barren mountains, and in the mythology and the legends of Ireland. From the Poetry Foundation stated, He belonged to the Protestant, Anglo Irish minority that had controlled the economic, political, social, and cultural life of Ireland since at least the end of the 17th century. After having this wonderful background that was full of experience Yeats wrote some of the most famous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Next, the second message from Yeats Sailing, is what is really living. The idea is that as soon as you were born you were dying. Which asks the question of what is really living. Some people see a soul dragging around a corpse. Your soul wants to get out and be free. From the five life changing thoughts stated, We have an ego, a personality, a history, preferences, dislikes, beliefs, opinions, cultural viewpoints, and experiences. These ingredients comprise our person and our worldly sense of self. But beneath all of these human ingredients lies one which is the foundation of all of them. Without this ingredient, this avatar would not exist. This ingredient is the soul. For me really living is doing things that make you happy. Because in life a person is going to make mistakes and not be perfect but it s how you learn from them and how you make your life better from the experience you had. From Sailing, Yeats, lines 21 25, Consume my heart away; sick with desire and fastened to a dying animal. It knows not what it is; and gather me into the artifice of eternity. All good things must die but it s about how you live and some may say that right as you are born you are dying. But, if you look in a optimistic or pessimistic view that s up to you. The setting is one that watchers can identify with and van Gogh s whirling sky coordinates the watcher s eye around the sketch, with dispersing between the stars and the bending forms making a dab to dab impact. The craftsman conveyed the Mona Lisa with him until he kicked the bucket and was unmistakably mindful of its criticalness. After the artistic creation was delivered there were questions raised about the character of the sitter. While a great many people concurred that it was Mona Lisa Gherardini, the spouse of Francesco del Giocondo, a Florentine silk vendor, many individuals proposed it was, indeed, a self representation, and the facial highlights take after a later self picture by Leonardo. Mona Lisa is wearing plain clothing which is particularly not quite the same as different ensembles painted at the time. She wears an abnormally dark, basic dress with a creased bodice, with gold weaving. The dress has a low neck area that uncovered her chest. She is not wearing any adornments and a scarf dangles from her left shoulder. There is a cover hanging over her marginally muddled hair, accepted to be a grieving shroud. The fine dull cloak that spreads Mona Lisa s hair is frequently accepted to be a grieving cover, a bit of apparel worn to symbolize social position. However, the subject s dress is fairly basic and standard and neither her outfit nor the scarf around her neck demonstrates her highborn standing. In 1911 the Mona Lisa was ... • 12. The Fountain House And New York The first Clubhouse was Fountain House and started in New York in 1948 with the idea that people with mental illness can effectively participate in their own recovery (The Fountain House, n.d.). Former patients of Rockland State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in New York, began a self help group and then formed WAWA (We Are Not Alone) (The Fountain House, n.d.). The first official meeting of We Are Not Alone was held at the Third Street YMCA in Manhattan. It started out as a support system for people with mental illness, but did not include treatment programs or therapy. With assistance from supporters, they bought a building on West 47th street in New York City. The fountain in the garden encouraged the name Fountain House (The Fountain House, n.d.). This Clubhouse model has been replicated all over the world because it conveys the idea of belonging, involvement, and connection (Clubhouse International, n.d.). The original model became a local community center for people over the age of eighteen with mental illness. Its goal was and still is for people with mental illness to reach their full potential (The Fountain House, n.d.). Membership is open to anyone who has a history of mental illness. Being a member of Fountain House helps people feel like they belong and are always welcomed. Also, Members have a stake in the organization and they work together to attain a shared goal (Clubhouse International, n.d.). In particular, the clubhouse model proves ... Eleanor s mother was a debutante who was disappointed in Eleanor s looks. It is even reported that she called her granny (Ward,1). Her mother died when she was 8 leaving her to be raised by her father. Elliot Roosevelt suffered from alcoholism and a narcotic addiction. He was often not allowed to see her due to this condition and was committed to an asylum in France in 1890( biography, 2). Her father also died when she was almost 10 years old. She was then sent, along with her brother, to live with her maternal grandmother. This relationship was more out of duty than love. As Eleanor grew up she learned three lessons she was unattractive; no one s love for her was likely to last; and those whom she counted most could be counted on to let her down. ( Ward,1). She found she enjoyed helping others and found it an escape from her problems. At age 15 she began school outside of London at Allenswood School. The founder, Marie Souvestre, of this school called Eleanor the most amiable girl I have ever met (Cook, 110). She introduced Eleanor to helping people in need and taught her to think for herself. When a person physically dies it is believed that their life ends at that moment, but is it really a valid statement? Can a person not love on even after being physically dead? As an example, employees within a marketing department know that their job is marketing and, as a result, those employees can focus on improving their marketing work and even specialize in a specific area of marketing. With this recent surge of high stakes standardized testing, teachers are held to increasingly higher expectations of quality instruction and meeting these standards. • 27. Escapism in Children s Literature Children s literature can take many forms, from far fetching science fiction to spell binding who done it mysteries. One of the most popular ideas presented in these various forms is that of escapism. The characters in these stories explore quite complex social issues in ways that are less confrontational then realism. One might consider why escape is such a central theme; as a child there are numerous benefits to fantasy, it allows readers to experiment with different views of the world and takes hypothetical situations and invites them to make connections between this fictive scenario and their own reality. John Stephens an English professor at Macquarie University has said Fantasy writing operates through metaphor so that the unfamiliar is used to stand in for, or comment upon, the familiar. The use of metaphor in Fantasy makes it more open to different readings and meanings. Take J.M. Barrie s fantasy novel Alice s Adventures in Wonderland as an example. Barrie uses his story to transport Alice to an unknown world full of backwards words and talking animals. This allows Alice to escape the boredom of picture less books and adult conversations that were beginning to consume her. Similar in theory is Neil Gaiman s style of writing. Gaiman has produced a number of Victorian influenced fantasy novels for children, including Coraline. Coraline, like Alice centers on a young girl entering another world. The Spanish empire became the most prominent superpower, dominating most of the world. This allowed Spanish people at the time to enjoy a cultural golden age during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; but this glorious moment did not last longer to prevent Spain s current economic downfall. Despite suffering an economic downturn, Spanish empire remained the largest in the world until the eighteenth centuries. The Civil War causes Spain s global power to drop as their economy decreases, until the day Francisco Franco took over in 1939. Franco ruled Spain from 1939 until his ... Prediction: (30 words max.) If the pressure in the jar remains atmospheric, then the water level will not rise. Rational: (100 words max.) Inside the jar, the flame consumed the oxygen and produced carbon dioxide until it ran out of oxygen and the flame was extinguished. Since pressure is reliant on volume as seen in the formula p=(NkT)/V, a change in the volume of molecules in the jar will also cause a change in pressure. If the pressure inside of the jar becomes negative, it will force water into the jar to balance the pressure gradient. Methods: (200 words max.) The day after Houston s historic flood started with gloomy gray skies, horrendous humidity, and me sitting on the couch staring blankly at the T.V. The ecstatic voices of each advertisement after advertisement filled my ears. This was supposed to be a day of excitement and fun but it seemed as if the rain had destroyed those plans. I was leaving to New York for the summer and wouldn t see my friends for months. Sick and tired of sitting down half the day, I called them up to see if they had any idea of what we could do to spend this last day together. They came up with an idea to make the most out of an otherwise terrible day. In no time they showed up, I was taken away in a car headed towards the bayou. When we arrived, the water was raging against the banks inching closer and closer to the roadside. The trees were halfway underwater, not a single living creature in sight, and the sun was hidden behind a blanket of menacing clouds. As we unmounted the long blue canoes from the truck, we examined what we were about to do. • 37. The Road That Led African Americans The road that led African Americans to freedom in the United States was definitely not an easy road by any means. It was indeed a stony road, and the chastening rod is used here to describe the harshness associated with slavery and the masters cracking the whip, or rod. So much blood was shed during this point in time, before Reconstruction (during the Civil War), and after Reconstruction and the period leading up to the Harlem Renaissance. In fact, even after African Americans had gained their freedom they still experienced abuse, inequality, and suffering at the hands of their White counterparts. The Jim Crow Laws were enacted and in effect in the South, which led to the mass migration to the North, and even in the North, Blacks still experienced some indifference, though not on the same scale as they had in the South. In Lift Every Voice and Sing, Johnson uses rhyming which of course is standard of most poetry. He also uses simile in line five with his comparison of how the sound of joy should be loud like that of the rolling sea. Lift Every Voice and Sing is both carefully and craftily composed, and uses vivid imagery as well as religious theme, which is also prevalent in a majority of Johnson s works, again displaying his strong Christian faith. Mairs supports her claim by first appealing to the reader s emotions, second by proving her credibility as a disabled person, and lastly by appealing to the reader s sense of logic. Mair s purpose is to prove that disabled people are just as normal as anyone else in order to persuade advertisers to represent the disabled on television, newspapers, commercials, advertisements, etc. Based on Mair s informal tone and diction, she is writing for the common, intellectual audience who has the ability to make a difference in changing the views of the media and non disabled people towards the disabled. Her persuasive tone stands out within this paragraph, as well, due to her wanting the reader to distinguish how she can relate to them as she deals with everyday life, considering her audience is not disabled. She demonstrates her persuasive tone by asserting, Take it from me, physical disability looms pretty large in one s life. But it doesn t devour one wholly. This false sense of security held by the public at large leads the masses to believe in the complete truthfulness of drug advertisements which could and will lead many consumers to not do their research on a medication before seeking it out to get it prescribed. The question being; is it safe for public health to allow pharmaceuticals to advertise and push new drugs directly to the public? The answer to this isn t clear, in May of 2011 the Congressional Budget Office released its study; Potential Effects of a Ban on Direct To Consumer Advertising of New Prescription Drugs. The study was inconclusive, it stated that a moratorium on direct to consumer advertising could benefit public health by providing more time for possible safety problems with some drugs to be uncovered, but could also harm public health by delaying the widespread adoption of useful new drugs (Procon.org). From an ethical standpoint this depends upon the company advertising the product. Research On Physical Activity Promotion Problem Statement While research on physical activity promotion has historically been on the impact of individual behavioral interventions, there has been substantial progress in identifying the role of policymaking in creating population wide improvements in physical activity levels (Brownson et al., 2007; Frank Kavage, 2009; Humpel, Owen, Leslie, 2002). As a result of the increasing evidence of modifying the built environment through policyinterventions (Kahn et al., 2002), the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recommend these interventions as a means of increasing physical activity in communities. Nevertheless, little is known about how to quantify levels of policy implementationin order to understand and appropriately interpret policy outcomes at the state and local levels (Ogilvie et al., 2010; Sallis, Story, Lou, 2009).
