The Invention Of Cochlear Implant Surgery
The first recorded case of deafness was 575 BCE, and ever since then people have been searching for
cures. At the turn of the century, people would put giant horns up to there ear (hearing trumpets) in an
attempt to improve hearing. Later in the early 30s the hearing aid was invented ( due to the depression
no one could afford it). This started a revolution of new technologies to cure people with disabilities,
which occurred across the remainder of the decade. People thought that if they could cure these
disabilities, that they would go down in history as heroes, or become increasingly wealthy. This
revolution lead to the invention of prosthetic limbs, Laser eye surgery, and in 1982, a Melbourne man

That being said, this is how an expert would describe the procedure. (The squeamish are advised to
skip the remainder of the paragraph). Cochlear implant surgery is usually performed as on an out
patient basis, and is usually a fairly minor procedure to undergo. It is performed under general
anesthesia and takes about 1.5 2 hours. The site of the internal receiver is first planned out and drawn
on the skin. The incision is then planned and performed. The bed for the internal receiver is prepared,
and small holes are drilled in the skull to allow the device to be secured to the skull. The mastoid bone
is then opened, and the middle ear is then entered. The round window is opened, and a tiny hole is
made in or near the round window to enter the cochlea, which is called a cochleostomy. The implant s
electrode array is then inserted into the cochleostomy. A few tiny pieces of muscle are inserted around
the electrode array to seal the hole and the wire is placed in the mastoid. The internal receiver is
sutured to the skull. The incision is closed and the integrity of the device is sometimes checked with
electrical equipment and an x ray is sometimes ordered to confirm the position of the device in the
cochlea. A dressing is wrapped around the head. The patient recovers for a few hours in the hospital
and when he is able to walk independently, he is discharged home. Oral antibiotics are used for one
week, and pain pills are prescribed, although most patients are comfortable with over the counter
medications for pain control. The dressing is removed by the patient the next day, and sleeps on the
opposite ear for one week. Attention has to be taken to not wear tight fitting glasses, and contact sports
need to be postponed for a month. The patient may shower the next day. The incision is allowed to
heal for 2 3 weeks before the device is activated.

Why Google Is An American Public Corporation And The...
Intro
With Yahoo having a head start on being made before Google did, it seems that Google came out
strong. Even though they both mostly offer the same services, it shows that Google is more preferred
over Yahoo. They both been household names, providing the public with a search engine and many
other features.
History of the companies
Yahoo was founded March 1, 1995 by Jerry Yang and David Filo. A year prior Jerry and David were
two Electrical Engineering graduate students from Stanford University, they made a website named
Jerry and David s Guide to the World Wide Web , and on this website you found a directory of other
websites. A year later they renamed it to Yahoo! . It is an American public corporation and the internet

Vertical Analysis
As the textbook states a vertical analysis is An analysis of a financial statement that reveals the
relationship of each statement item to its base amount, which is the 100% figure . In the balance sheet
it reports on the assets, liabilities, and stockholders equity of the business as of a specific date.
Liabilities are debts that are owed to creditors. Stockholder s equity is a corporation s equity that
includes paid in capital and retained earnings. For Yahoo over the last five years kept a pretty steady
amount of assets at around fifteen billion. There was an increase in the year 2012 to 17.1 billion. Last
year 2013 it lowered to 16.8 billion in assets. Their debt has increased from 40 million in 2010 to 1.1
billion in 2013. In the last four years Yahoo has lower their amount of liabilities with a slight increase
last year. In the year of 2010 they had 1.6 billion dollars in liabilities, they have decreased their
liabilities to 1.3 billion dollars in the ending of 2013. The stockholder equity increased as well, back in
2010 it was at 14.9 billion. It had an increase to 14.5 billion in 2012, but a slight drop happened in
2013 ending at 13 billion dollars. A income statement reports the net income or net loss for

How Is Gran Torino Related To The American Dream
Opportunistic Torino The American Dream is all about opportunity. This opportunity is either given or
must be earned. Clint Eastwood knew exactly how to show example of fairness in The American
Dream as an opportunity. The touching film Gran Torino shows a wonderful example of obtaining The
American Dream, as well as how much opportunity is related to it.
The film Gran Torino is much more than a simple message to it s viewers. This wonderfully creative
movie directed by Clint Eastwood completely puts emphasis on the opportunity given in America as
an immigrant. In the hands of a lesser director, Gran Torino could have easily been an unbearably
schmaltzy, can t we all just get along message movie. But [Clint Eastwood] refuses to sentimentalize
anything. (Matthew) This quote speaks for itself in the making of this film and all of the ideas it
portrays. This movie is not like a simple thirty second commercial; it shows depth and meaning to The
American Dream. Gran Torino is a sort of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manhola Dargis of The New York Times says Gran Torino stars Eastwood as an American icon once
again this time as a cantankerous, racist, beer chugging retired Detroit autoworker who keeps his
shotgun ready to lock and load. (Manhola) This is nothing but the truth. Walt is betrayed as a bright
old man, but which a huge attitude. He lives the American Dream in this film; Thao does not. Walt
knows the disadvantage that Thao lives with every single day. As the two characters begin to create a
bond, Thao s cousin who is a gang member seems to harass Thao and his family more frequently.
Thao is not given the chance to fulfill any type of enjoyable life through his unfair circumstances

Equity Valuation
INTRODUCTION TO EQUITY VALUATION Equity shares can be described more easily than fixed
income securities. However, they are more difficult to analyse. Fixed income securities typically have
a limited life and a well defined cash flow stream. Equity shares have neither. While the basic
principles of valuation are the same for fixed income securities as well as equity shares, the factors of
growth and risk create greater complexity in the case of equity shares . As our discussion of market
efficiency suggested, identifying mispriced securities is not easy. Yet there are enough chinks in the
efficient market hypothesis and hence the search for mispriced securities cannot be dismissed out of
hand. Moreover, remember that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Overseas With The Norwalk Virus
Kristine Bryson
Overseas with the Norwalk Virus The Norwalk virus is part of a group called the Noroviruses and
caliciruses. It is known to cause gastroenteritis, infection within food, food poisoning, and even the
short lived nonbacterial gastroenteritis. It can spread from contaminated water and infected foods. It
can even spread anywhere, even on a cruise ship. A pleasant vacation may have some passengers
choosing to jump ship, if the Norwalk virus is a passenger on board.
The virus has received its name from its birth in Norwalk Ohio. It was responsible for a short term
outbreak of gastroenteritis occurring in the students of Bronson elementary school in November of
1968. It wasn t until 1972 the virus was examined and received its name as the Norwalk virus. Since
its known birth, there have been many outbreaks with similar symptoms reported. It is believed the
virus may belong to the family Caliciviridae. The Norwalk virus is actually part of a group of single
stranded RNA, non enveloped viruses. Once a person is infected with the virus it begins to copy itself
within small intestines. The symptoms would develop between 12 and 48 hours and tend to last 1 3
days.
In reality, the viruses from the Caliciviridae cause nearly 18% of all the short term gastroenteritis
cases worldwide. The Norwalk virus is responsible for the small scale outbreaks that occur on cruise
ships. Unfortunately, people who have been infected by the virus can spread it directly to other people

Four Tiers When Driving Research Paper
Driving is exciting, you feel like you just want to jump in the car and start accelerating, but that s not
the way to go. If you have ever watched a plane being prepared for taking off, you ll have seen the
crew go through a whole series of safety checks, they can t afford for anything to go wrong, and it s
the same when driving a car. Before driving, one must be certain that the vehicle is in a good condition
before heading out on a road. There are many things to check, but the most important ones are the
tiers, signal indicators and mirrors.
First of all, check all four tiers and make sure they are correctly inflated and that they have at least
1.5mm of tread. Look for The Tread Wear Indicator, if it s exposed, the tire is not legal for

Weightlifting In Greece, Ancient Greeks And Ancient Greece
We have many sports such as baseball, football. and basketball but all of these sports have one thing in
common, they all have another sport within themselves. Weightlifting is one of the most common used
practices in almost every sport. This practice, weightlifting or in other terms lifting heavy objects. It
has been a part of life since the beginning of time. Even the earliest of human civilizations had records
of some type of weightlifting. The Chinese Zhou Dynasty, Ancient Egyptians and The Greeks. From
these civilizations we have what weightlifting is today. These civilizations used weightlifting in
several different ways. The Chinese would have recruits do tests of strength to prove that they could
prove themselves useful on the battlefield. One of the main tests was a 400 lb. stone that the recruits
had to lift off of the ground in order to be accepted into their military ranks.(Basictraining.us) The
Egyptians had many sports and activities that they would do that included Archery, Swimming, chariot
racing. They would use bags to put sand in to lift over their head. The Egyptians use those sand bags
to lift over their heads to build strength. There was no way of knowing how heavy those sand bags
where but from some research the said they heaviest they could have gotten was me 95 lb. just for the
fact of the sack not being able to support the weight of the sand. (Basictraining.us) Mesoptamia

Review Of Sean Covey s Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens
Do you remember struggling in school? In your relationships with others? With yourself? Do you
remember how hard it was to be a teenager? If only there was some sort of instruction manual or
guide. Well, Sean Covey attempted to write one such book, drawing information from his father s
book and directing it towards the teenager. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens offers great
advice for teenagers wanting to have more peace and control over their lives.
One of the most helpful advice Sean gives is to focus on your Personal Bank Account (PBA). This
idea coincides with the sharpen the saw habit, even though Sean introduces the PBA at the beginning
of the book rather than with the seventh habit. It s important that the information of a PBA is at the
beginning because we must first win the private victory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He called it the Relationship Bank Account (RBA). Some of the things Sean suggests to making
deposits into your RBA is keeping promises, doing small acts of kindness, being loyal, listening, and
setting clear expectations. It s important to note that many of these things are also on the PBA list.
Building others also builds yourself. Sean gave the example of the two seas in Palestine. It s an
excerpt from Bruce Barton s The Man Nobody Knows. This excerpt describes how full of life and joy
the Sea of Galilee is compared to the poisoned Dead Sea. Both of these seas are fed by the River
Jordan, but the Sea of Galilee is also as an outlet; it gives whereas the Dead sea only receives. Barton
compares this to people and how giving will benefit others as well as yourself, yet there is no reward
for being selfish. I always try to give as much as I can. I love Mother Teresa s quote, Let no one ever
come to you without leaving better and happier. It inspired me to take Sean s advice about RBA more
seriously and do everything I could to be a light in other people s

Hinduism Monotheistic Religions
Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world and it is a dominant religion is South Asia. The
word Hindu comes from the Indus River and was used to name the people who lived beyond this river.
Although Hindus adore many Gods, Hinduism is considered a monotheistic religion. In this sense, all
Gods are part of one main God, the supreme spirit, Brahman. In its article Hinduism: Beliefs about
God, the BBC News website states that, Brahman has many forms, pervades the whole universe, and
is symbolized by the sacred syllable Om (or Aum) (BBC News). Hindus believe that God created the
world and that everything contains a piece of God. The video God, Soul and World What Is

This law follows the idea of cause and effect. In this sense, one s act will have a consequence, good or
bad, depending on his or her act. This consequence will follow this person from this life to the next.
Dean Halverson states that:
Humanity s primary problem, according to Hinduism, is that we are ignorant of our divine nature. We
have forgotten that we are extended from Brahman and have mistakenly attached ourselves to the
desires of our separate selves, or egos, and thereby to the consequences of the resultant actions.
Because of the ego s attachment to its desires and individualistic existence, we have become subject to
the law of karma. (Halverson)
In order to save one s self from bad Karma, Hindus practice the moksha, which is the liberation from
the wheel of life, death, and rebirth (Halverson). In doing so, one must strive to detach oneself from
the desires of the ego (Halverson). One way to do that is to practice Yoga, which is a physical and
mental discipline that is practiced for the purpose of spiritual liberation or empowerment (Halverson).
That way, by detaching from the physical world, Hindus can feel closer to

Hermia s Speech By William Shakespeare
Hermia s speech in Act 2, Scene 2, contains an abundance of dream imagery. She has awoken from a
terrible dream after falling asleep in the forest with Lysander. They were lost and tired and decided to
rest. Lysander wanted to sleep beside her but she refused since they are not yet married and while they
slept Puck applied a love potion on Lysander s eyes thinking he was Demetrius. Lysander wakes and
is repulsed by the sight of Hermia and never wants to see her again because he is now in love with
Helena. Hermia awakes from her terrible dream and retells it thinking that Lysander is nearby
listening. Then she realizes that he is not there and she does not see him anywhere. Hermia expresses
the sentiment that she will find Lysander or she will surely die. She stated, Help me, Lysander, help
me! do thy best To pluck this crawling serpent from my breast! Ay me, for pity! what a dream was
here! Lysander, look how I do quake with fear: Methought a serpent eat my heart away, And you sat

Investigating Factors That Affect The Police Of Policing...
2.1 Introduction
This chapter deals with a review of the literature on the topic of research to determine factors that
affect the effectiveness of the police in policing regarding race and corruption.
2.2 The problem exists in contemporary society
Many researches have raised concern over racism and police indulging in other criminal activities,
especially corruption the United Kingdom, but contemporary research has been more specific when
dealing with race matter, the scope has been so wide in that various scholars have found it important
to explore it more to fight its prevalence. The racism in the police is a not matter which should be kept
in secret; the prejudice is very visible in the public domain (Benson, 2010). The police approach to an
issue is purely biased, the way police officers approach to white people is different from the way they
tackle the same to a black person, minority ethnics and Asian person (Weitzer, 2008). The society has
been socialized in a manner that the level of prejudice is used to define characters of a different race.
These definitions in most cases amount to hatred actions. The issue of concern is where to run for
justice now that police are part of this society. Due to this, many violence ends up unreported, In
2013/2014, the number of defendants who were referred by the police to Crown Prosecution Service
(CPS) for a charging decision for racially and racially aggravated crimes rose by 14.17% from the
previous year to 12,184, and out of

Nazi Germany And The World War II
The year was 1941 and World War II had been going on for two years since it started in 1939. Nazi
Germany had gained much territory and controlled over three fourths of Europe. The only countries
not conquered controlled or allied with Germany in Europe were Sweden, Switzerland, Russia and
England. Both Sweden and Switzerland were neutral during the war, so the two biggest threats to
Germany was England and Russia. (Patrick Shrier 08/06/2006)
On June 22, 1941 the third reich (Nazi Germany) invaded Russia in an attempt crush the nation and
the Red Army. Hitler had been planning the invasion at the since 1940 because Russia rejected to be a
part of Tripartie, which was supposed to be an alliance between Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.
Hitler wanted the best conditions for his army to succeed the invasion. He originally planned on the
invasion taking place late April or early may, because that was when the spring thaw was over and the
ground was dry enough for his tanks to move without getting stuck in the muddy terrain. (Patrick
Shrier 08/06/2006)
Russia was a major superpower during World War 2 because of its size and the raw materials that had
major impact on the war. If Germany conquered and took control of Russia it would drastically change
the war and the outcome of it. If Germany would have conquered Russia they would have access to all
of the raw materials and they would be able to enter countries all over Europe and even Asia.
Russia was a very strategic country

Depression s Upside By Jonah Lehrer
Depression s Upside a New York Times article written by Jonah Lehrer takes a different approach
when looking at depression. He notes that Charles Darwin s depression allowed Darwin to concentrate
on his work and therefore accelerated his research. The article looks at how depression changes the
way someone thinks and processes their environment on an evolutionary standpoint. This article
focuses on research by psychiatrist Andy Thomson and psychologist Paul Andrews, who took a
special interest in evolutionary psychology. They wanted to concentrate on the evolutionary root of
depression, thus began the outlook of rumination; the thought processes that surrounds depression.
Thomson and Andrews formed the analytical rumination hypothesis which states, the rumination
thoughts forces an individual to over think and become very analytical and hyper focus on their own
flaws causing their depression. Many studies show that the constant negative thoughts lead to
depression, however Thomson and Andrews were more concerned with the evolutionary purpose of
rumination, if there is one? They explained the purpose as a fever that sends white blood cells into
overdrive in order to fight off infections, depression might be the fever that fights off one s affliction.
Rumination often starts because of a psychological blow, leading to a cycle of negativity which can be
hard to get out of, if the psychological blow continues to affect an individual, they tend to fixate on the
problem and

Chain Store Essay
Second, and most importantly to me, is the quality and high standards that chain stores possess. In my
personal experience, chain stores have a decent amount of staff available to assist you with knowledge
of product and great customer service. In the few local shops I ve stepped into, I have rarely been
greeted or assisted unless I managed to chase down a dour looking employee to begrudgingly answer
my questions. In Postrel s essay, she hits the nail on the head by asserting the idea that whether a store
is local or a chain, they are still quite similar in products they sell; A hardware store was a hardware
store, a pharmacy a pharmacy. (p. 347) The only true difference to me is the quality of the customer
service and the values the store possesses. In Augusta there are few local stores I enjoy shopping in,

samples of some widely used scaling codes. Do you see any problems with them? a Yes Depends No b
Excellent Good Fair Poor c Excellent Good Average Fair Poor d Strongly Approve Approve Uncertain
Disapprove Strongly Disapprove
A, because Yes Depends No is too vague. Particularly the word depends is too vague and you are not
able to get a good idea of what the true result is. You need a scale with more degrees and stronger
choices to gain a full idea of circumstances.

State Farm article, 1 5
1. Identify the various constructs and concepts involved in the study. State Farm is trying to create a
study in order to prevent as many recurring accidents while making areas safer. The new data will be
used to identify patterns of problems.
2. What hypothesis might drive the research of one of the cities on the top 10 dangerous intersection
list?
Of the top 10 listed dangerous intersections, I believe one has had the most frequent similarities when
compared to each documented accident.
3. Evaluate the methodology for State Farm s research. I think State Farm s methodology for research
is awesome. By evaluating cities and their listed accidents, they are helping create a list of the top 10
most dangerous intersections. This is helping these specific cities by allowing them to qualify for a
$20,000 grant to defray the cost of a comprehensive traffic engineering study of the intersection.
(Cooper, Schindler)
4. If you were State Farm, how would you address the concerns of transportation engineers? As the
transportation engineers calculate data for accidents, they also go out and see how adequate the
roadways and intersections are for travel to ensure safety while proposing implementation of
improvements. First, I would have them look at the different areas and population, what kind of
transportation is being used to transport through them (capacity and volume for vehicles to travel
through). Also, I

Abstract
We will discuss in this paper the data warehousing and the online processing of data. We will describe
the best ways to manage the data and the difficulties that you could face. Also we will talk about how
can we solve or reduce these difficulties.
Database Management Systems (DBMS)
Database Management Systems (DBMS) maximize:
● Data security
● Data integrity
● Data independence
Data Warehousing
Data warehousing is a powerful business intelligence tool for maximizing the organization s
investment in the information technology. It is can be describe as a collection of decision support
technologies, maid to allow executive, manager, and analyst, to make faster decisions.
IT managers need to learn and implement data warehousing because it is very powerful tool provides
storage, functionality and responsiveness to queries beyond the capabilities of today s databases. It
also improves the data access performance. Since it is very rare today to remove the data because most
users have only read access also rapid access to a larger volume of data which could be inconvenient
sometimes.
Software and systems support started to design systems to support decision makers as online
analytical processing (OLAP), decision support systems (DSS) and data mining.

The 8th Amendment To The United States Constitution
The 8th Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the people from a government who
may try to restrict or null your right to fair bail. The right restricts the judicial branch from performing
any unfair procedures that can be directed towards a defendant, which is due process. Which is to state
that the right to fair bail falls under due process because it is selectively incorporated in order to
protect one s unalienable rights of life, liberty, and property. The right guarantees that the defendant
who is paying bail is given a fair/reasonable bail price. The issue within the article pertains to how a

The Business Strategy Of Caterpillar Inc.
An organisation s strategy plays an important role of providing direction of where company wants to
be and how best to allocate the company s resources to meet its objectives. The formulation of
business strategies has evolved over the years and has been made more difficult in recent by the
uncertain operating environments and global financial crises. The key to sustainable business is
ensuring that the company s strategy proportions are aligned (Kim, W.C Mauborgne, R, 2009).
Caterpillar Inc. has been in existence since 1925 and the company has faced its fair share of turmoil.
The current global challenges coupled with a stronger dollar make it difficult for any organisation to
operate but Caterpillar continues to outperform the competition. The key to the company s success is
its strategy execution supported by an unmatched distribution network. In this analysis, I tried to

Analysis Of The Poem The Fountain
Tommy in the Fountain is a character faced with the dilemma of mortality in the physical realm and
can not accept the grim, inevitable death that faces all of humankind. In the world of The fountain,
there are three planes of existence which correlate to the past, present, and future/consciousness.
Darren Aronofsky intertwines these three times periods creating a nonlinear perspective of time, but it
is in line with the general plot of the movie. Aronofsky wants the viewer to link the time periods
together where the past is the story depicted in the book, and the future can be seen as his
consciousness. A character that stays apparent in these settings is Izzi. Izzi guides the main character
to accept the grim fate of death and to reach a state of knowledge which will potentially enlighten him.
She helps Tommy understand the meaning of death by bringing the immediacy and expectancy, and
forcing Tommy to finish it, referring to the book and his understanding of death. Completing the book
results in the journey that Tommy takes to enlightenment, the acceptance.
The relationship between these characters really create the whole importance of realizing death is
ultimately an act of creation. Present day Tommy is faced with a cancer stricken Izzi where she is
enlightened during her death and immortalized . Izzi is also depicted as the tree of life in Tommy s
consciousness and Queen Elizabeth of Spain. The Tree of Life is a symbol of immortality, with Izzi
dying in the

Joseph Heller s Catch 22
Joseph Heller s Catch 22 embodies the idea of the corrupt selfishness of the military system that
dehumanizes the men of it s ranks. Often, the bureaucratically inclined superior officers focus only on
personal advancement. In doing so, they eliminate any shred of humanity of the men who serve under
them. Ultimately, each commanding officer demonstrates a complete lack of moral judgment that
considers only their own personal agenda at the cost of the common soldier. Heller s treatment of a
corrupt bureaucratic system first emerges in his portrait of Major Major. Among the most pathetic
characters in the book, Major Major holds a position of immense authority. Unfortunately, he was
promoted to squadron commander. Colonel Cathcart directly pointed out, But don t think it means
anything, because it doesn t. All it means is you re the new squadron commander. (88) The men of the
squadron, almost on cue, begin to avoid Major Major. He is no longer seen as the same person prior to
his promotion, but only as the rank. As the men begin to avoid Major Major, he begins to avoid
responsibility. In fact, he implements a system to help avoid contact with others. He says I don t want
anyone to come see me while I m here. (Heller 98) Major Major s accidental advancement in the
military ranks was due to an, I.B.M. machine with a sense of humor almost as keen as his father s,
(86), promoting Major Major to major. Due to the error of the I.B.M. machine, Major Major is forced

Stereotypes And Stereotypes Of The Black Community
Throughout the history of motion pictures, prejudice directors have used film to control how the
general public views certain demographics of people. In particular, the black community has
historically been viewed in a negative light. Stereotypes were created through literature and film that
still affect African Americans. Directors and writers would create relatable stories and attach
demeaning traits to black people that have qualities in common with Black Americans. This would
force readers and viewers to subconsciously attach these stereotypes black people. Examples of these
stereotypes can be found in Uncle Tom s Cabin and The Birth of a Nation. Derogatory terms such as

War? They fought because of states rights, their love of Texas, and slavery. One reason Texans fought
was because of states rights. In document C it says that states have rights to secede or stay in a nation,
such as the Union. This shows that Texas had the right to secede from the Union and Texans wanted to

Study Of Organisms Living On The Rocky Shore Essay
On Wednesday the 9th of March, Students from Sacred Heart College Travelled by Bus to Siren s
Rock s which lies between Owhiro Bay and Island Bay. At Siren s rocks we had to explore the rocks
and collect data of all the different species we found at the rocky shore. The rocky shore is an
intertidal place where solid rocks predominate. It is useful for the study of Organisms living on the
rocky shore. The rocky shore consists of the low tide, mid tide, high tide and splash zones. We used
quadrats to sample which species was located in these zones and we did this when the tide was low.
Quadrats is a sampling method used to see which organisms are located in certain proportions. The
species I have chosen to talk about in my report today is one type of Limpet and one type of Top Shell.
The common name for the Limpet I found is the Golden/ Radiate Limpet of whose scientific name is
Cellana Radians which was found in the lower intertidal zone. The Cellana Radians is predated by
starfish, whelks and shore birds. The Limpet is an herbivore because it eats Algae and Angiosperm
which both are types of growing plants located within the rocky shore. The common name for the
species of Top shell I found was actually Scorched Monodont whose scientific name is Diloma
(Melagaphia) Aesthiops which is also found in the Lower intertidal name zone. The Diloma
(Melagraphia) Aesthiops is predated by starfish, shore crabs and coastal reef fish. The Diloma

THE WTO AND ITS INFLUENCE ON TRADE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
The World Trade Organization implements and facilitates trade between countries. Their aim is to help
countries especially developing countries in boosting their trade between countries. They also help in
creating agreements between countries that help to encourage trade and make trade easier. They help
in settling disputes or problems between member countries anytime it develops. I chose this topic

According to an article called Developing Countries and the WTO which was edited by Gary P.
Sampson and W. Bradnee Chambers, they talk about the WTO, its aim and their main functions. They
start by saying that The goal of a world trading system centered on the World Trade Organization
(WTO) is for multilaterally agreed law, coupled with the progressive liberalization of trade, to the
basis for international trade relations (Sampson, Chambers). This basically sums up the aim of the
WTO, they are in charge of creating free and fair trade and making sure that each and every country is
being treated well, both those countries that are big in the trade market and those that are small, there
is also no discrimination and each and every rule and regulation created is accepted by all the
members of the WTO. One of the problems that have been encountered is the high tariffs that are
being put on goods that are imported from other countries. The article mentions that because of high
tariffs on many products, a compromise agreement with the exclusions sought for sensitive and special
farm products would significantly decrease the gains from reform (Sampson, Chambers). The article
also talks about how the four African countries namely, Chad, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali use
cotton as their main means of export, the importance of this trade and also how the market price for
cotton is reducing and this might become a problem for

Since the plasmapause location is a continuous variable, techniques like regression support vector
machine (SVM), tree bagger, and neural network were used to construct the model. In this study, the

total.
For neural network approaches, 70% of the electron density data were used as the training data sets,
the 15% were used as the validation data and the final 15% as the testing data sets. As for the rest of
the method, 75% of electron density data were randomly selected to train the data and the rest of the
data were used as test datasets.

Case 1 refers to the eight parameters (Vsw, SymH, AE, AL, AU, Pressure, E, and Bz) without any
manipulations. For case 2 and 4, the 12 hour moving average of Bz, symH and AE values were used
instead of the real time values. This would add time history to these parameters. Meanwhile, in case 3
and 4, log10 of symH, AL and Bz were used instead. These parameters were selected for manipulation
through a trial and error process as well as based on previous studies and understanding of the
parameters.
From Figure 2, it is clear that the values predicted by bagging, boost and neural network methods
came very close to actual values. On the other hand, the SVM with radial basis function (RBF) kernel
and SVM with 3 order of polynomial model generated a horizontal straight line, i.e. did not change at
all. Similar trends (shown in Figure 4) were observed for the rest of the parameter sets. This shows
that SVM has a poor performance in general as compared to other methods.
Figure 4 illustrated the predicted values from each model using the input parameter from case 2 and
the actual Lpp values.
To further examine the performance of each technique, coefficient R and RMSE from each test case
were studied carefully. The results were summarized in Table 1.
Table 1 listed the RMSE and R from each model using different parameter sets.

The Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch Of Government In The...
The first form of Government in America was the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of
Confederation worked but had a few flaws which included no system of national courts and also
Congress lacked strong and steady leadership. The weakness were quite significant so the
Constitutional Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederation but instead led to the
creation of the United States Constitution. The Federalist wanted a strong central government but the
Anti Federalists were scared that would be like Britain again so they opted for a small weak central
government; their roles in the Convention were to make The Articles of Confederation please both
parties and make compromises. The Constitutional Convention kept the Government from being
overpowered by creating Checks and Balances, The Executive branch was responsible for enforcing
the laws, Legislative creates the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the law. The Checks were
intended to keep one Branch of Government from being more powerful then another Branch. The
smaller and larger states compromised when creating laws by having the Senate and also the House of
Representatives, smaller states like the Senate because this means all states would have an equal
amount of reps but larger states preferred the House of Reps because the amount of reps was based on
population. I believe that in today s Government the Judicial Branch is the ... Show more content on

How Characteristics Of Culture Maintain Capitalist Society
The purpose of this paper is to examine how characteristics of culture maintain capitalist society. I will
be using Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer s The culture industry: enlightenment as mass
deception, as the backbone of my analysis. This will be accomplished by assessing aspects of society
such as: monopoly capitalism, the entertainment industry and relevance to modern day society. This
paper argues that capitalism transformed culture into an ideological means of domination, and acts as
brainwashing tool over the masses.
Capitalism in The Concise Encyclopedia of Sociology is defined as: the system that provides for needs
and wants, animated by a particular ethos, coordinated and organized by establishing practices,
regulations, and laws, privileging particular types of knowledge. (Weber 1927, 47). Theodor Adomo
and Max Horkheimer created a term known as culture industry which is the commercial
commodification, and the mass production of pseudo culture by corporations (1947, p.29). The
creation of the culture industry resulted in the standardisation of the cultural form, which eliminated
an individual s ability to think critically. This occurred because of the greed that capitalism creates, the
heads of production firms mass produce cultural goods that are aimed at people s desires to increase
profitability. They argued that capitalism abandoned its liberal roots and began to monopolize
industries, thus creating monopoly capitalism.
In society, the culture

Technology Has A Growing Influence On Home Life, The...
Technology has been a growing influence in home life, the business world, and now education. Many
schools use technology to enhance student learning. Administrators have bought technological devices
and tools such as; digital cameras, SMART boards, laptops computers, projectors, and course software
to support curriculum, all in the hopes of improving student achievement and motivation. However,
the technology tools themselves should not be the focus. Technology cannot take place of the teacher;
it is a tool that the educator uses to enhance the student s understanding and should be used as
supplemental and to complement the educator s lessons. Bassett recognized that the technological age
should not be about technology alone, rather it should be about what the teacher and the students are
doing with the technology to further understanding and engagement with the lesson (2005, p. 77).
Technology tools are becoming readily available for teachers and students. Today technology is more
available then ever. Honey (2005) sites the National Center of Education Statistics, in saying that
public schools have made consistent progress in expanding Internet access in classrooms. Having
these technological tools and access available allow it easy for teachers to put into practice student
centered learning. Researchers, Neo and Kian study has proved that the use of technology had greatly
effected the student s learning process and widen the depth of learning skills and knowledge.

Bend It Like Beckham Movie Analysis
Bend it like Beckham is a movie that came out in the United States on August 1st, 2003. This movie
expresses the concept of marrying traditions to the world we leave in. Dreams are the colors on your

days. Religion is what keeps people grounded and secure. It can also unite groups of people with the
same ideology. Bend It Like Beckham demonstrates the differences between western and eastern
cultural behavior. We often forget that traditions are sedentary; they create a struggle when trying to
integrate ourselves into a community that is not your own. Can our dream triumph, when we have

  • 2. The Invention Of Cochlear Implant Surgery The first recorded case of deafness was 575 BCE, and ever since then people have been searching for cures. At the turn of the century, people would put giant horns up to there ear (hearing trumpets) in an attempt to improve hearing. Later in the early 30s the hearing aid was invented ( due to the depression no one could afford it). This started a revolution of new technologies to cure people with disabilities, which occurred across the remainder of the decade. People thought that if they could cure these disabilities, that they would go down in history as heroes, or become increasingly wealthy. This revolution lead to the invention of prosthetic limbs, Laser eye surgery, and in 1982, a Melbourne man Graham Carrick made history when a remarkable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That being said, this is how an expert would describe the procedure. (The squeamish are advised to skip the remainder of the paragraph). Cochlear implant surgery is usually performed as on an out patient basis, and is usually a fairly minor procedure to undergo. It is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1.5 2 hours. The site of the internal receiver is first planned out and drawn on the skin. The incision is then planned and performed. The bed for the internal receiver is prepared, and small holes are drilled in the skull to allow the device to be secured to the skull. The mastoid bone is then opened, and the middle ear is then entered. The round window is opened, and a tiny hole is made in or near the round window to enter the cochlea, which is called a cochleostomy. The implant s electrode array is then inserted into the cochleostomy. A few tiny pieces of muscle are inserted around the electrode array to seal the hole and the wire is placed in the mastoid. The internal receiver is sutured to the skull. The incision is closed and the integrity of the device is sometimes checked with electrical equipment and an x ray is sometimes ordered to confirm the position of the device in the cochlea. A dressing is wrapped around the head. The patient recovers for a few hours in the hospital and when he is able to walk independently, he is discharged home. Oral antibiotics are used for one week, and pain pills are prescribed, although most patients are comfortable with over the counter medications for pain control. The dressing is removed by the patient the next day, and sleeps on the opposite ear for one week. Attention has to be taken to not wear tight fitting glasses, and contact sports need to be postponed for a month. The patient may shower the next day. The incision is allowed to heal for 2 3 weeks before the device is activated. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. How Is Gran Torino Related To The American Dream Opportunistic Torino The American Dream is all about opportunity. This opportunity is either given or must be earned. Clint Eastwood knew exactly how to show example of fairness in The American Dream as an opportunity. The touching film Gran Torino shows a wonderful example of obtaining The American Dream, as well as how much opportunity is related to it. The film Gran Torino is much more than a simple message to it s viewers. This wonderfully creative movie directed by Clint Eastwood completely puts emphasis on the opportunity given in America as an immigrant. In the hands of a lesser director, Gran Torino could have easily been an unbearably schmaltzy, can t we all just get along message movie. But [Clint Eastwood] refuses to sentimentalize anything. Fixed income securities typically have a limited life and a well defined cash flow stream. Equity shares have neither. While the basic principles of valuation are the same for fixed income securities as well as equity shares, the factors of growth and risk create greater complexity in the case of equity shares . As our discussion of market efficiency suggested, identifying mispriced securities is not easy. Yet there are enough chinks in the efficient market hypothesis and hence the search for mispriced securities cannot be dismissed out of hand. Moreover, remember that is ... It s an excerpt from Bruce Barton s The Man Nobody Knows. This excerpt describes how full of life and joy the Sea of Galilee is compared to the poisoned Dead Sea. Both of these seas are fed by the River Jordan, but the Sea of Galilee is also as an outlet; it gives whereas the Dead sea only receives. Barton compares this to people and how giving will benefit others as well as yourself, yet there is no reward for being selfish. I always try to give as much as I can. We have forgotten that we are extended from Brahman and have mistakenly attached ourselves to the desires of our separate selves, or egos, and thereby to the consequences of the resultant actions. Because of the ego s attachment to its desires and individualistic existence, we have become subject to the law of karma. Hermia awakes from her terrible dream and retells it thinking that Lysander is nearby listening. Then she realizes that he is not there and she does not see him anywhere. Hermia expresses the sentiment that she will find Lysander or she will surely die. She stated, Help me, Lysander, help me! do thy best To pluck this crawling serpent from my breast! Investigating Factors That Affect The Police Of Policing... 2.1 Introduction This chapter deals with a review of the literature on the topic of research to determine factors that affect the effectiveness of the police in policing regarding race and corruption. 2.2 The problem exists in contemporary society Many researches have raised concern over racism and police indulging in other criminal activities, especially corruption the United Kingdom, but contemporary research has been more specific when dealing with race matter, the scope has been so wide in that various scholars have found it important to explore it more to fight its prevalence. The racism in the police is a not matter which should be kept in secret; the prejudice is very visible in the public domain (Benson, 2010). The police approach to an issue is purely biased, the way police officers approach to white people is different from the way they tackle the same to a black person, minority ethnics and Asian person (Weitzer, 2008). The society has been socialized in a manner that the level of prejudice is used to define characters of a different race. These definitions in most cases amount to hatred actions. The issue of concern is where to run for justice now that police are part of this society. Due to this, many violence ends up unreported, In 2013/2014, the number of defendants who were referred by the police to Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for a charging decision for racially and racially aggravated crimes rose by 14.17% from the previous year to 12,184, and out of ... • 17. Depression s Upside By Jonah Lehrer Depression s Upside a New York Times article written by Jonah Lehrer takes a different approach when looking at depression. He notes that Charles Darwin s depression allowed Darwin to concentrate on his work and therefore accelerated his research. The article looks at how depression changes the way someone thinks and processes their environment on an evolutionary standpoint. This article focuses on research by psychiatrist Andy Thomson and psychologist Paul Andrews, who took a special interest in evolutionary psychology. They wanted to concentrate on the evolutionary root of depression, thus began the outlook of rumination; the thought processes that surrounds depression. Thomson and Andrews formed the analytical rumination hypothesis which states, the rumination thoughts forces an individual to over think and become very analytical and hyper focus on their own flaws causing their depression. Many studies show that the constant negative thoughts lead to depression, however Thomson and Andrews were more concerned with the evolutionary purpose of rumination, if there is one? They explained the purpose as a fever that sends white blood cells into overdrive in order to fight off infections, depression might be the fever that fights off one s affliction. Rumination often starts because of a psychological blow, leading to a cycle of negativity which can be hard to get out of, if the psychological blow continues to affect an individual, they tend to fixate on the problem and ... Analysis Of The Poem The Fountain Tommy in the Fountain is a character faced with the dilemma of mortality in the physical realm and can not accept the grim, inevitable death that faces all of humankind. In the world of The fountain, there are three planes of existence which correlate to the past, present, and future/consciousness. Darren Aronofsky intertwines these three times periods creating a nonlinear perspective of time, but it is in line with the general plot of the movie. Aronofsky wants the viewer to link the time periods together where the past is the story depicted in the book, and the future can be seen as his consciousness. Ultimately, each commanding officer demonstrates a complete lack of moral judgment that considers only their own personal agenda at the cost of the common soldier. Figure 4 illustrated the predicted values from each model using the input parameter from case 2 and the actual Lpp values. To further examine the performance of each technique, coefficient R and RMSE from each test case were studied carefully. The results were summarized in Table 1. Table 1 listed the RMSE and R from each model using different parameter sets. • 33. The Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch Of Government In The... The first form of Government in America was the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of Confederation worked but had a few flaws which included no system of national courts and also Congress lacked strong and steady leadership. The weakness were quite significant so the Constitutional Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederation but instead led to the creation of the United States Constitution. The Federalist wanted a strong central government but the Anti Federalists were scared that would be like Britain again so they opted for a small weak central government; their roles in the Convention were to make The Articles of Confederation please both parties and make compromises. The Constitutional Convention kept the Government from being overpowered by creating Checks and Balances, The Executive branch was responsible for enforcing the laws, Legislative creates the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the law. The Checks were intended to keep one Branch of Government from being more powerful then another Branch. The smaller and larger states compromised when creating laws by having the Senate and also the House of Representatives, smaller states like the Senate because this means all states would have an equal amount of reps but larger states preferred the House of Reps because the amount of reps was based on population. • 34. How Characteristics Of Culture Maintain Capitalist Society The purpose of this paper is to examine how characteristics of culture maintain capitalist society. I will be using Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer s The culture industry: enlightenment as mass deception, as the backbone of my analysis. This will be accomplished by assessing aspects of society such as: monopoly capitalism, the entertainment industry and relevance to modern day society. This paper argues that capitalism transformed culture into an ideological means of domination, and acts as brainwashing tool over the masses. Capitalism in The Concise Encyclopedia of Sociology is defined as: the system that provides for needs and wants, animated by a particular ethos, coordinated and organized by establishing practices, regulations, and laws, privileging particular types of knowledge. (Weber 1927, 47). Theodor Adomo and Max Horkheimer created a term known as culture industry which is the commercial commodification, and the mass production of pseudo culture by corporations (1947, p.29). The creation of the culture industry resulted in the standardisation of the cultural form, which eliminated an individual s ability to think critically. This occurred because of the greed that capitalism creates, the heads of production firms mass produce cultural goods that are aimed at people s desires to increase profitability. They argued that capitalism abandoned its liberal roots and began to monopolize industries, thus creating monopoly capitalism. In society, the culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Technology Has A Growing Influence On Home Life, The... Technology has been a growing influence in home life, the business world, and now education. Many schools use technology to enhance student learning. Administrators have bought technological devices and tools such as; digital cameras, SMART boards, laptops computers, projectors, and course software to support curriculum, all in the hopes of improving student achievement and motivation. However, the technology tools themselves should not be the focus. Technology cannot take place of the teacher; it is a tool that the educator uses to enhance the student s understanding and should be used as supplemental and to complement the educator s lessons. Bassett recognized that the technological age should not be about technology alone, rather it should be about what the teacher and the students are doing with the technology to further understanding and engagement with the lesson (2005, p. 77). Technology tools are becoming readily available for teachers and students. Today technology is more available then ever. Honey (2005) sites the National Center of Education Statistics, in saying that public schools have made consistent progress in expanding Internet access in classrooms. Having these technological tools and access available allow it easy for teachers to put into practice student centered learning. Researchers, Neo and Kian study has proved that the use of technology had greatly effected the student s learning process and widen the depth of learning skills and knowledge. ...
