The Influencing Machine Summary
Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld are the authors of the article The Influencing Machines . This
article is about technology and is written through a comic style form. Gladstone s main idea on this
article is that we should not fear technology. Gladstone s and Neufeld s comic style article about
technology is the best way to convey her argument because it gives visuals to express her argument,
has a different form of arrangement of her details and thesis, and she gives examples of modern
technology that should not scare us. In her comic style article you can see there is a lot of visuals as
you go through the reading. The visuals throughout the article helps the readers get her ideas more
clearly than a regular article with no images. For example, on the first page of the article she talks
about homophily and even though she gives the definition before the word, the picture of her in a
flock of birds can help the reader understand and visually see that homophily means the groups we
associate ourselves that have similar views to us. Not only do the visuals help the reader understand
her argument but it also makes the reader look more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Gladstone mentions how facial recognition features in our phones are actually helpful
because it recognizes anyone and no one ever has to be a stranger . She also says how there is contact
lenses that can block out anything you do not want to see. With this being said she convinces the
reader that not only should we not be scared of technology but also inform us on how it can be helpful.
This was a good decision to provide examples because it gives the reader knowledge on how
technology is not supposed to be scary but actually helpful. This is one of the best choices she made to
convey her argument because it makes her article be more focused on why she believes modern
technology is not something we should fear to the

The Flawed System Of American Education
The Flawed System of American Education
The United States of America used to be known as one of the greatest countries to be apart of. From
the jobs to the economy to education people loved to be apart of the American culture. The problem
many Americans are facing today is poor education. Since America is viewed as a high profile country
many people have prominent expectations on what they are receiving, specifically the education. The
fact is that there are major problems with all levels of the education system today. Starting with early
education, teachers are quick to say children needs to be medicated or put into special education.
Proceeding to the general or high school education where kids are graduating but not prepared for
what s after. Lastly how higher education or college can hardly be afforded in today s society. As a
result of the failing education system, many parents blame the child or society when in actuality the
failing system is corrupted by some teachers, lack of preparation, and lack of affordability in higher
education. One of the most popular conversations parents have when their child is born is education. A
question that comes up is when should the child start school? The usual age to start kindergarten is
about five to six years of age. At a young age kids are like a sponge and learn a lot in the first few
years. Teachers are a great influence on the children considering they are at school between seven to
eight hours a day. Over time

The Untold Story Of Americas Largest Slave Revolt
The Untold Story of Americas Largest Slave Revolt , published in 2012, in Harper Collins Publishers,
written by Daniel Rasmussen. A story in which it has been neglected through time. From the
beginning to the end in 1803 to 1860. A few courageous men stood up against slavery to attempt the
largest revolt in U.S. history. Fighting for justice and a chance of freedom. But the other side attempts
to prevent to clear what happened from history and to prevent any other slave retaliations. Rasmussen
s history can be broken down easily for the readers attention. From the beginning, first explaining of
New Orleans being on point with its commercial farming zones and the upper hand in the Atlantic
slave trade. The untold stories on how and where these conspiracies began to spark an uprising.
Second, the battling for death or for freedom, the slave did know this, so it was a point of no return
when initiated. How tactics were used and how it began to where an army was built to clear its own
path in history. Third, how French planters intended to clear up the history of the revolt so that it
would not have enough breathing room to spark another uprising in the future. In the eighteenth
Century, Slave owners expanded their hold on the North American Continent, churning through new
land and bringing slaves from the older states to the newer, through a vast new domestic slave trade,
(Rasmussen, 2015 pg. 186) which would become the nation s top state in the slave trade. At times

The Hard Engineering Solutions For Western Nations
In December 2013, a massive tidal surge flooded 1,400 homes along the east coast of the U.K., which
has managed to destroy and tumble some of these houses into the Atlantic Ocean (Carrington, 2014).
Coastal erosion endangers coastal communities livelihood and source of income thus, defending it
through efficient means is important as it stabilises the lives of the people who inhabit the coast. To
efficiently protect against coastal erosion a methodical combination of hard engineering and soft
engineering solutions must be utilised. This essay will firstly discuss the hard engineering solutions
that could be used in coastal defence and then secondly the soft engineering solutions will be
presented. Thirdly, how both methods can be utilised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the National Resource Council (2014), Galveston Seawall has protected Galveston
against numerous hurricanes, and it is estimated that if the seawall were not to be in place, it would
have cost the relevant authorities $234 million due to the damages made by a single hurricane.
Furthermore, as these seawalls redirect wave energy back into the sea or ocean their base is slowly
eroded (Masria et al., 2015), thus requiring constant expensive maintenance which discourages
investment and therefore the usage of seawalls. Seawalls may also lead to the transportation of sand
away from the beach and into the sea which would result in the acceleration of beach erosion
(National Resource Council, 2014). Overall, seawalls are a long term and effective yet expensive
mean to protect against natural disasters that emanate from the sea. However, they may lead to
negative long term environmental impacts such as accelerating the beach erosion process.
Groynes
Furthermore, another hard engineering method that is utilised to protect against coastal erosion is
groynes. Groynes are dam like structures built into the shore with the purpose of blocking sediments
from drifting away (Galagano, 2003). Therefore, they provide their benefit to the beach by trapping
and holding sand and sediments in the desired location and allowing adequate elevation to be
maintained (Pope, 1997). The

A Landmark Surgery
At approximately 10:30 AM on the 19th of October 1927 Carrie Buck was escorted back to her room
to begin the short recovery period she was required to take after having had an inch of flesh removed
from each of her Fallopian tubes with the loose ends then being professionally and caringly cauterized
and sutured closed. This woman had just undergone a landmark surgery, not because of the highly
technical aspects of the surgery, or anything of the sort, but rather because the entire procedure had
been performed against her will. Following Carrie out of the operating room was Dr. John H Bell, the
superintendent of the Virginia Colony for Epilectics and Feebleminded, for whom this case marked a
victory in the three year legal battle which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is in other countries where we are most familiar with the process, most specifically Nazi Germany.
The efforts of the Third Reich to create a genetically superior race of Aryans was another example of
the application of eugenics (Leuchtenburg 12). The most basic tenant of this practice is the premise
that weak parents will lead to weak offspring, who will in turn produce more of the same genetically
deficient specimens and in time degrade the integrity of the entire human race. Upon entering the legal
battle that would decide who had the right to preside over her reproductive decision, Carrie Buck
knew that the outcome of the case would not only have an effect on her future but that of thousands of
others who were having their rights brought into question as well. Beyond merely giving the go ahead
for her own sterilization, the loss of the case would bring about a new set of legal justifications for the
systematic, controlled extinction of those who were not considered of the ideal genetic makeup. This
wasnt just a fight for an individuals freedom, it was a fight for equality as promised by legislature that
even then threatened to strip away what it had promised in its governing documents. The official name
of the case is Carrie Buck v John Hendren Bell Superintendent of State Colony for Epilectics and
Feeble Minded. It was introduced into the Supreme Court in April of 1927 and decided the 2nd of the

United States Government Expansion Essay
In the last century and a half, the United States Government has grown significantly in size, scope,
and influence. There are many contributing factors to this expansion. The quest for civil rights,
presidential programs and how those programs affected domestic policy, and the foreign policies that
were a result of imperialism, nationalism, and the many conflicts that the nation became involved in
were the biggest catalysts attributing to this progressive development in the government. These effects
have shaped the government from the vision of the Founding Fathers into what it is today. The
expansion of the government s power, particularly the Executive Branch, has its roots in
Progressivism. Based on the ideas of philosophers like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
US protection from Asian countries and the need for a Pacific base were the reasons for getting
Hawaii. Both of these acquisitions would become a huge part of foreign policy and the need for an
expanded government in the coming years. As imperialism extended the country s power and
influence through diplomacy and military might, the policy of non intervention would quickly become
outdated. Due to Britain and France running out of men, money, and material, the US had to get
involved in World War I. This involvement brought about numerous new policies and activities by the
government. The War Industries Board, Food Administration, Railway Board, and the US Shipping
Board came to be. Railroads were nationalized and two new laws, the Espionage Act of 1917 and the
Sedition Act of 1918, were put into effect as a result of US involvement in the war. Hawaii would
become a key part of World War II with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One of the Cold War battlefields
was Alaska. Due to the Truman Doctrine and its policy of containing communism, the US gor
involved in Korea and later, Vietnam. Domestic policy changes, also tied to Progressivism, were a
major component of the expansion of the size, scope, and influence of the US government. Roosevelt
s Square Deal caused the government to grow because he wanted the government to regulate business
and get more involved in the American economy. Under Taft,

On My First Daughter and on My First Son
On My First Daughter and On My First Son
Ben Jonson s poems on the death of his children
Ben Jonson lived in the English Renaissance period when childhood mortality was very high due to
health problems, diseases, lack of medicines and unhygienic life conditions. He got married to Anne
Lewis in the early 1590s. Their first daughter, Mary was born in 1593 who died only six months later.
Jonson wrote his poem On My First Daughter upon her death. His first son, Benjamin, born 1596, died
of the plague in 1603 at age seven and Jonson wrote the poem On My First Son shortly after his
death1.
On My First Daughter and On My First Son were both published with many other poems in Epigrams

And so does her body, which is laid in her grave. The father now asks the heavy and dark earth in the
last line that it should cover her body very gentle and with this picture we get an even sadder ending.
Ten years after the death of his daughter Ben Jonson wrote a similarly sad poem on a similarly tragic
occasion. His seven years old son, Benjamin died of the plague in 1603. On My First Son (number
XLV in the Epigrams) is a twelve line poem, just like the previous one and has a similar structure,
though there are many differences, too. The poem starts surprisingly with a saying goodbye, where a
mourning father says farewell to his first son. The father does not tell us the son s name, but there is a
big hint in the first line: child of my right hand that is the meaning of the name Benjamin. Benjamin is
a biblical figure whose name means son of the right side, which is usually interpreted as son of
goodness, fortune and happiness.4 Even though the father does not introduce his son to the readers by
name, he gives a very short but nice desciption of him by just telling his name s etymology. In the
second line we can see that the father takes responsibility on the son s death, saying that it is his
fault/sin that he died, because he had too high expectations of him. Lines 3 and 4 contain that the boy
was seven years old and that he was just lent by God for this short time to his

Analysis Of The Poem Dover Beach By Matthew Arnold

An Analysis of Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold
Dover Beach is thought to be one of the best representations of the Victorian Period all together. It
portrays the mood and tone of what the people experienced and felt at that time. Around the same time
it was written, London had just experienced a massive boom in their population, growing from 2 to 6
million citizens. At the same time, London was becoming one of the first in the country to move
towards industrialization, causing some to lose their jobs due to machinery performing them better and
faster. People began to feel useless with technology taking over so quickly. Many suffered from the
expansion during the early part, losing all hope of finding happiness and giving this moment in time a
new name; A Time of Troubles .
Many other authors, like Matthew Arnold, began writing their personal accounts of what they
experienced or saw others experiencing, giving the feeling of melancholy. The reason why Dover
Beach represents the Victorian period is because in the way Arnold wrote it, he didn t ground himself
or stick to one specific subject. He creates a mood by using a variety of images, metaphors, similes,
and adjectives. The narrator seems lonely, not mentioning any other person around him. One of the
other major problems being experienced during this time are also represented in this poem. That
problem is the loss of faith. Because of the new developments,

Even though, Danny is an American he still wasn t able to be happy with who he was because

Brother Death
Control has many different meanings for many different people. To most, however, this word brings to
mind one person forcing another do his or her will, but other things have control over people as well.
Sherwood Anderson shows two examples of control in Don and Ted. These two characters have
problems created by their difficult lives. The other characters personalities either help or hinder the
children, creating a family with a constant conflict until one of the characters either changes, or
disappears from the story all together.

She describes what they look like and even gives a little background on them so the reader can get a
better idea of their personalities. Ted changes once during the story, with the help of his sister, Mary.
Before this change occurred, the family always made him upset by never letting him do the things that
he wants to do. They constantly watched him and told him to be careful, not letting him run or play.
Mary, seeing the injustice of this, decided to do something about it. One day, when Ted and Mary got
back from swimming in the creek, Louise, their mother, told Ted he mustn t. The rest of her sentence
left unsaid, but nonetheless clearly understood. He mustn t do all the dangerous things he does. While
Ted left out of anger, Mary stayed her ground and argued for her brother, telling Louise she should
stop reminding Ted of his illness and leave him alone to do as he pleased. Her argument took Louise
by surprise so much that she decides, to Ted s great joy, to give the children their freedom. When he
dies at the end of the story, Mary feels he had a happy life. Don, in Mary s mind, had the hardest life
of all.
The conflict between Don and his father John shows another way situations in life can have control
over someone. Anderson describes Don as almost an exact copy of his father in everything from his
personality to his looks. Anderson shows her readers using direct characterization a

History of the Rights of the Accused and the Warren Court
One of the most well known epithets in the United States is innocent until proven guilty. This means
that until a prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that a person accused of a crime has
indeed committed that crime, he or she is to be presumed innocent of all charges. In theory, this idea
upholds the sense of democracy and fair trial upon which the country was founded. In practice,
however, it is less so. Oftentimes, an accusation or a criminal charge defines the person accused, as he
or she is already presumed guilty in the court of public opinion. Especially in the cases of high profile
trials, most people accept that the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Constitution clearly outlines the rights of the accused and what steps must be taken before an
accused person can be punished. One of these rights is The Writ of Habeas Corpus, which means that
a person cannot be held or detained for an unreasonable amount of time without having been charged
with a crime. This prevents the government and law officials from imprisoning citizens without cause.
Today, a large number of criminal conviction appeals are raised under the habeas corpus privilege,
[wherein] individuals ... convicted of crimes ... may demand that the government justify his or her
physical confinement (ThisNation). In other words, even if a person has been convicted of a crime, if
it is found that his or her right to habeas corpus has been violated, it can nullify the conviction.
Another right that is guaranteed to the accused is the right to a trial by jury. Article III of the
Constitution guarantees that those who are accused of crimes have the right to have their guilt or
innocence determined by a panel of fellow citizens (ThisNation). A person cannot be convicted of a
crime without receiving a fair trial, during which the prosecution must present its proof that the
accused is guilty. If there is not enough proof to determine that the accused person did commit the
crime, then the jury cannot convict, and the accused is free to go. There are some exceptions to the
trial by jury right, such as if a person is accused of a crime that has a penalty of

Analysis Of Jan Van Eyck s The Dutch And Flemish
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, and evolution in artwork all around Europe. Up in the North,
right behind the Italians, the Dutch and Flemish were gearing up for their own shift in artwork to
surpass their neighbors. Following inspiration from their Italian neighbors, and the International
Gothic style, they looked forward and redefined painting as a style, while also changing arts meaning.
Making the characters true to life in artwork was a new feat never before seen until the High
Renaissance in Italy. Jan Van Eyck took the Netherlands by storm by renovating the International
Gothic style, and creating a more naturalistic style that spawned dozens of copiers, and inspired artists
to strive for a more realistic, original view of the human body. He mastered both portrait artwork and
religious altarpieces in a style of oil painting he invented. It conjured a movement of painting, which
would soon change the European art scene as he passed away. Religious painting also took hit of Eyck
s artwork as it introduced the realism style religious figures in life sized format. Jan van Eyck was a
master of realism for the time period he lived in, and gave the north what Leonardo di Vinci gave to
Italy. Renaissance artwork was groundbreaking because of its naturalistic style brought on by Jan van
Eyck that created life like portraits, and dynamic story telling in altarpieces.
Following the early Italian Renaissance, the Dutch decided to dip their feet in the pool of inspiration

African-American Philosophies

the people of the nation. They start to proclaim that African Americans suffer afflictions because of
those violating the constitution, and that consequently affects their mental state. Due to the given
history, the afflictions mentioned happened greatly due to the wars that were going on during the time.
Both great orators also accept the fact that they lack a stable education like the white man. They do not
deny the fact that they are lower in educational terms, but they do not appear to feel inferior to the rest
of the population. Both men just agree in the lack of knowledge. Both men express the same idea of
wanting to be full Americans. Douglass does this by explaining that the African American needs
franchise, particularly the right to vote. Bunche does this by explaining through his voice the desires
of every African American to be a full citizen. Through the wanting of franchise, both speeches
display hope for humanity in our nation, even though their time periods were buried deep in burden.

Quarries are open pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone, such as granite,
marble, limestone, and other tangible rock building materials. However, these open pit mines
produced little to no pollution at all because the technology to extract every last gram of ore from rack
has not been developed. The process basically involves pulverizing every rock that comes out of a
mine with any trace of ore within it. This produces what is known as tailings. Tailings are one of the
biggest pollutants of the world to date. They are so toxic that they have to be mixed with water to
produce sludge and are pumped into ponds (known as tailings ponds) so that they are rendered
obsolete . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the United States, the Toxics Release Inventory, or TRI, plays the same role. When mining was
added to the TRI in 1997, the mining industry suddenly moved to the top of the list of polluters,
contributing over half the 7.77 billion pounds of toxic chemicals released to the environment. Most of
the pollutants came from the waste rock and tailings that are created at the mine site. (MAC: Mines
and Communities, 2007)
These mines are devastating to everything surrounding them if they are not regulated and managed
correctly, and there is one trying to be built up in Alaska. If built this mine is to be the largest open pit
mine to ever be built in the existence of all mankind. Contrary to its size its name does not give

Romantic Ballet Vs Classical Ballet
Dance critic Théophile Gautier states, Nothing resembles a dream more than a ballet... (Anderson 77).
The effortless technique of the ballerina paints most ballets as exactly this. Consequently, there is
more to a ballet than technique and dancing. Different types of ballets and their structural components
separate one ballet from the next. It is important to understand the difference between the two main
types of ballets: Romantic Ballet and Classical Ballet. Romantic ballet in the 19th century differs from

Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling Methods
As research across all fields and topics evolve, techniques on how to improve research endeavors,
such as statistical modeling techniques, become important to utilize. Hierarchical linear modeling,
similarly known as multilevel modeling, has been a statistical approach that has gained attention and
improved the analysis and interpretation of research data (Osborne, 2000). Hierarchical linear
modeling is a regression based statistical analysis that considers the hierarchical (i.e., multiple levels;
nested) nature of variables within a dataset. Hierarchical data is data that has an organizational
structure consisting of units of groups (i.e., levels) that are clustered under a larger group. Therefore,
the variables within a dataset may have mediating effects and such effects can only be explored when
taking into account the clustering of groups in the data.
Prior to the wide spread use of hierarchical linear analyses, data that was structured hierarchically in
nature was not analyzed appropriately due to the neglect of considering the correlated, underlying
relationships among independent and dependent variables. Considering the correlated parameters of a
proposed relationship within a dataset is of importance because the relating parameters would indicate
that the variables are not independent. Thus, violating the assumption of independence and increasing
the likelihood to make a Type 1 error, in addition to resulting in biased standard errors and hypothesis
tests.

An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley is full of lies and...
J.B. Priestley sets the play in a lavish and happy environment. Without Priestley even telling the
audience that the play is set pre war it is obvious because of all the available luxuries and fineries such
as champagne glasses and dessert plates . The war caused great shortages in goods and food, which
led to rationing. No one in 1945 (when the play was written) would have been able to create a
luxuriant celebratory dinner. This cunning use of setting deliberately reminds the audience of some of
the luxuries lost because of the war.
The play, An Inspector Calls , uses moralistic irony to reflect on achievements made today. He reveals
the weaknesses and wickedness not only in society, but in the individual characters; which I explain ...

The 1912 society was a wicked one with evidence of wrong doing, sinfulness, spite, vileness
(wickedness), a society in which there was no equality, democracy, or benefits. Without these
important factors, a society cannot function, and wickedness is decreed in society. Weakness and
wickedness is distributed throughout the play on an individual basis, mostly due to the hypocrisy and
aristocracy of society.
Mr Birling is delineated as a respectable and successful business man, with a wealthy family.
Although by looking beyond the text we can determine that Mr Birling was in fact a selfish, greedy
despot. This is not entirely Mr Birling s fault; it is more to do with the format of society.
Mr Birling was paying Eva twenty two an six (a subsistent amount of money). Eva requested twenty
five shillings . Mr Birling refused to pay and after Eva Smith stood up for what she believed in, she
was sacked.
The fact that Mr Birling acted, and fired Eva shows he was harsh in his actions. Also the fact that no
one found anything wrong with Mr Birling s action, which is an example of wrong doing defines
wickedness/weakness in society.
Sheila Birling s sub sequential actions also encouraged Eva Smith to commit suicide. Sheila was the
one who got Eva Smith fired from Milwards shop. When Sheila was trying on the dress, Eva laughed.

The Importance Of The Self And Society
Contrary to popular belief, the self and society are not separate entities, they are dialectic and
influence the development of each other. This relationship can be examined through behavior and
interaction of an individual s self with social reality. The self relates to society through a variety of
different sociological theories including Dramaturgy, Symbolic interactionism, the looking glass self,
phenomenology, and ethnomethodology. All the above argue that society and the self are shaped
through experiences within our everyday lives, and that communication with other selves is necessary
to make up the larger societal structure. Without the self, society would cease to exist. Socialization is
the process through which the self emerges through social interaction (Gorea, 2017). The self is not an
organic thing that has a specific location whose fundamental fate is to be born, to mature, and to die,
nonetheless, is a dramatic effect arising from a scene that is presented (Goffman, 1959:252) In other
words, the way we are socialized into society leaves an impression on ourselves, as well as our
impression leaves a lasting effect on society. Through this process of socialization, we learn to adopt
the perspective of others, and act in a manner molded to represent the expectations of society. As
humans, we actively influence our own social development through our sense of self. We learn about
ourselves through socialization by copying the actions of others, or through

Dystopian Film Analysis
The most shocking aspect of the dystopian novel or film is the realisation that the future is contingent
on the present, and can be affected by something we do or don t do now
To what degree does this perspective on dystopian novels and films resonate with your own reading?
Dystopian texts fulfil the purpose of exaggerating contemporary issues and appropriating them into a
fictional universe, in order to criticise and foreshadow the destructive trajectory of current political
and social trends (Ferris, 2007). Dystopia, evolved in response to the changing political and social

Howey criticises the narrow vision of contemporary society, and our growing tendency to view the

Microsoft Office For The Home And The Workplace
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.) is by far the best productivity suite
currently available for the home and the workplace. It is the total package when it comes to handling
budgeting, payroll, inventory, etc. for businesses and home use. There are however free alternatives
which share a lot in common, so let s look at the pros and cons and decide for yourself which is the
better solution. Most choose Microsoft Office as the best so let s compare. How does Microsoft Office
(i.e. 2013) and free open source alternatives (i.e. LibreOffice, OpenOffice) compare? The predominant
business offering, Office from Microsoft, inevitably yielded some prominence when a reasonable open
source contender, OpenOffice, developed and took after an alternate open source choice, LibreOffice.
How do these alternative open source programs fair in comparison from the Microsoft Office? Bothe
open source suites offer an instrument called Base which is like that of Access from Microsoft, an
apparatus called Draw (like Visio), and a mathematical statement proofreader called Math, while
Microsoft office incorporates the desktop distributed Publisher. The ones to be talked about in this

Super Bowl Sunday is an important day not only for the NFL, but also for advertisers. Considering
that over one hundred million viewers watch the annual championship game, it s consequently one of
the most highly sought events for advertisers. Giving companies the opportunity to immense exposure

Description and Reflection of Dallas Museum The Dallas Museum is a renowned art museum
established in 1903 and is located in Dallas, Texas (Neumann et al. 19). The Dallas Museum of art is
one of the largest art museums in the United States of America containing more than 24,000
collections of art ranging from the ancient to the modern ones (MacDonald Brettell 112). There are
numerous things inside the museum, such as the pieces of art, museum visitors, and the architecture,
that relate to the understanding of the world outside the museum in terms of the day to day life and the
human society. My goal in this essay is to think outside the box and describe the observations I made
inside the museum and explain how they relate to my everyday life, the wider world, or the human
society. The painting work done by C. Bertram Hartman was the first piece of art I observed inside the
Dallas Museum. This painting, completed in 1930, consists of a campanile type tower, most likely a
representation of a historic skyscraper (Walker 73). The painting applies a fractured perspective
blended on an urban look with muted color palettes accompanied by harsh shadows (MacDonald
Brettell 117). The painting is a reflection of the dynamism and energetic expansion of the current New
York City. The geometrical arrangement of the buildings in the painting resemble the current scenes
witnessed in New York, championing a fast pace and a

Review Of Nineteen Eighty Four And The Film Adaptation
A literary adaptation is defined as a composition that has been recast into a new form e.g novel, play
or screen production . (Ross, 2009, p.5) It has been noted that almost a third of all film productions
ever created were based on novel adaptations, and in today s contemporary society the book to film
adaptation cycle is more present than ever. Although this could to seen as an innocent move allowing
great texts to be more approachable and appreciated by modern culture, it has been argued that the
process damages the original content and understanding that is taken from the source material. By

Kant On Lying
Immanuel Kant, a philosopher who has strong opinions against lying has puzzled many critical
thinkers in philosophy. Kant creates a troubling situation on where a murderer is at the door asking
whether or not the victim, he or she is looking for is hiding and whether are not one should lie or tell
the truth about the victim s current hiding spot. An individual has a sense of inclination to do what is
right, however Kant is acknowledging that if one does testify where the victim is then one is surely
respecting the murderers intentions. Furthermore, the murderer s devious actions are now placed upon
the witness. In addition to this example, a Nazi is at the door wanting to know if one has seen or is

Meaning that a maxim is a principle of how one acts and how others should act too. According to
Kant, one should not be an exception to lie. In an event that one allegedly lies, and the victim was
coming out of their hiding spot, and the murderer encounters him while going away and perpetrates
his deed on him, then you can by right be prosecuted as the author of his death (8, 427). Still, one
cannot possibly have for seen those events. Under these circumstances, Kant insists the liar is still
partially responsible for the victim s downfall. This notion that is clearly irrational demonstrates how
little Kant has to argue about this topic.
Even if the truth was told and the deed finished, then responsibility was shared. However, Kant does
go and claims if one told the truth to the best of his knowledge, then neighbors might have come and
apprehended the murder while he was searching the house for his enemy and the deed would have
been prevented (8, 427). Although I agree with Kant up to a point, I cannot accept his overriding
assumption that lying to save a life is considered guilty by the civil

some of which are: The War of 1812, Rebellions of 1838, The Fenian Raids and the Red River
Rebellion. These obstacles presented, threatened the security, defense and the stability of Canada,

The National School Lunch Program enforced a rule, which sought to improve school meals (United
4088). The rule includes many different parts to it, which requires state agencies to acquire and check
many different pieces of data. The first thing the state agencies are required to do, according to the
United States Department of Agriculture, is to Conduct a nutritional review of school lunches and
breakfasts as part of the administrative review process (4088). By having these checks, the USDA can
ensure that schools are following the dietary restrictions as well as meeting the FDA nutritional
standards. The second step for state agencies is to Determine compliance with the meal patterns and
dietary specifications based on a review of menu and production records for a two week period (4088

schools to follow and be compliant. To conclude the first rule, the third and final action that state
agencies must take is to Review school lunches and breakfasts every three years, consistent with the

guidelines over the long run. The agencies check the school menu over the past three years, to make

Issara Butt Professor Beckham English 102 August 03, 2016 The Lost One The two short stories,
Teenage Wasteland by Anne Tyler and The Rocking Horse Winner, written by D.H. Lawrence, have a
lot in common to consider. In the story, both of the mother have lost something far more precious than
they could ever imagine. Both of them have lost their only son, and now the only thing they had left is
regrets. Just like in the old saying, Things are beautiful, when they are far away from us! It means that
you will never realized nor will you ever appreciate anything or anyone in life till you lost them
forever and for good. Sometime we as human being takes things for granted that it is our right to have

Progressive Era Of Education Essay
The Progressive Era of Education The twentieth century only saw an increase in the industrialization
and urbanization that began in the nineteenth century. The new social, political and economic
problems that began to emerge due to all of the changes developing in America during these times led
to a need for reform. Reform was needed throughout society whether it was in regards to immigrants,
civil rights, regulating trusts, or woman s rights to name a few. These problems extended equally into
the problems that educational progressives sought out to reform. John Dewey is commonly used as the
embodiment of progressive era reformation ideas but there were others as well, such as Grace C.
Strachan, George Counts, and Booker T. Washington. John Dewey is considered to have been a
pedagogical progressivist, meaning he focused on education reform by first reforming the way that the
teaching was actually done. In the past education focused on teaching children facts, mostly by
learning with repetition. This was a problem because it taught children information but not how to use
that mindfulness with critical thinking in real world situations. These problems led John Dewey to
write a series of articles that described his views on teaching and how it should be improved upon, this
is called My Pedagogic Creed . Dewey wanted to equally incorporate a psychological, the abilities and
interest of the student, and sociological, the needs and commitments of the society, aspect into
teaching. He believed that children were born with blank slates and throughout their lives they would
receive guidance unconsciously and be molded into adults (Dewey, 1). So the introduction of these
aspects would help the molded children into better citizens and that would help drive the social
economy into prosperity and overall a better democratic society.
Dewey focused on the individual saying that education comes through the stimulation of the child s
powers by the demands of the social situations in which he finds himself (Dewey, 1). He believed that
you have to tap into an individual s own powers, tastes, and interests say then that could be used to
relate it to past, current, and potential future social situations in which to

Juko Research Paper
Judo is a form of martial arts in which opponents attempt to throw or wrestle each other to the ground.
(source; merriam webster.com) The sport was created by a man named Jigoro Kano in 1882. (source;
worldjudotoday.com) Since then the sport has flourished with many judo Dojos and gyms being
established across the globe. Judokas, or people who practice judo wear judogis which is also known
simply as a gi. Gis resemble a basic bathroom robe, they are thick and cloth like. Also, they are tied
around the waist with a belt. There are 7 main belt colors: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown,

Throws and submissions are both scored in a different way. When being scored, the force and control
of the throw or pin is taken into account. You can score a ippon, wazari, yuko, or koka. Ippons are the
highest you can score. An ippon is scored when you throw your opponent so that their back
completely touches the mat. Wazaris are scored when an opponent falls partially on there back, two
wazaris equal one ippon. Next are yukos and kokas. A yuko is only 5 points and is scored when an
opponent falls mostly on there side. Kokas are 3 points and are scored when an opponent falls on there
thighs or buttocks. (source for paragraph; jkajudo.tripod.com) Pins are scored based of how long it is
held, and also whether or not if an opponent taps out . Tapping out means that during a pin or choke,
an opponent taps on the mat or the other person with there fingers or toes to stop the match. An ippon
can be scored by a pin or choke that causes the other opponent to tap out. (source;freestylejudo.org)
With all these rules and fighting, to some judo can seem intense. That may be true, but it can teach you
many valuable lessons plus get you into great shape. Anyone who practices judo will tell you that it
has strongly effected them in a positive

Formalism And Realism In Film
Short Critical Essay #3 Option 2 Classical film theories are generally divided into two main camps.
They have been categorized as Formalism and Realism. The formalist approach looks at the structure
and form of the film. It analyzes the method by which the story materializes and how it forces the
viewer to react based on the way it is presented. It incorporates character development, photographic
composition, camera movement, set design, editing, etc. to that end. The realist approach scrutinizes
how a film represents reality. It is a mechanical reproduction of reality that strives for objectivity and
realism. The primary focus is always every day, true to life characters and dilemmas, and the real life
situations they are found in. Commonplace themes are the rule. To achieve realism in cinema it was
necessary to direct attention to the physical and philosophic problems of ordinary existence. People
emerge as victims of forces beyond their control in a world at times seemingly spinning out of control.
Although there are also a few similarities, formalism and realism can be shown to offer substantially
different approaches to the art of filmmaking and the study of film. Realism is a style of filmmaking
that attempts to duplicate the look of objective reality with emphasis on authentic locations and
details, long shots, lengthy takes, and a minimum of distortion. Andre Bazin championed cinematic
realism. He identifies Realism as a movement of filmmakers who put their

Ethical Issues In District 9
District 9 is a movie about aliens that come to Earth; they settle in Johannesburg till they are made to
relocate to another area and troubles arise from there. The movie was released in 2009 and the time
period of the movie is the year 1982 and 2009. It was a period of time when South Africa was going
through a lot of problems and these problems are reflected in District 9. Racial discrimination,
segregation, xenophobia and others are real life issues and moral issues reflected in the film.
The most obvious issue reflected in the movie is xenophobia and the treatment of these foreign
refugees. In the movie, the alien spacecraft is stranded in Johannesburg and the government takes care
of the malnourish aliens onboard. In real life South Africa, Zimbabweans, refugees seeking refuge
flood the country. These refugees face discrimination by the locals and they are treated like dirt. ...

Apartheid was a social and political policy by the white minority government. Everyone was
segregated by their racial groups, public facilities were exclusive to each race and they all lived far
apart from each other. The movie was inspired by the apartheid regime in South Africa and is reflected
in the movie. The aliens take refuge in the slums and then these slums are walled up and this is the
only proper place for them to live in. The aliens live in separate areas from the humans, which is
parallel to the apartheid policies in real life. There are signs everywhere in District Nine s
Johannesburg which tells the aliens that the facilities in the city is for human usage and they cannot
loiter and aren t welcome in shops. This is all true in real life South Africa. Black majority live in
designated areas and public facilities have signs on them stating who can use it. Benches, beaches and
toilets have signs on them that say blacks only showing that only black people can use

Panera Braed Case Analysis
The overview of Company situation : Panera Bread Company Panera Bread company is one of the
leading fast causal restaurant and widely recognized as the nationwide leader in the baked breads,
made to order sandwishes, salads, custom roasted coffees and cafe beverages. The company targets to
urban workers and suburban dwellers who looking for a quick service meal, qualify foods and
environment. In 2004, the customers ranked Panera Bread highest among quick service restaurants in
the Mid west and Northeast regions of the United Stats in all catergories which included environment,

In my opinion the weaknesses of Panera Bread are the stringent criteria to gain a consideration for a
Panera Bread franchise and the huge amount of initial investment for a Panera Bread bakery cafe
referred in the exhibit 7 in this case which cost approximately 1,003,000 to 2,235,175 dollars plus real
estate and related costs. This may limit the number of franchisees which could be a barrier of the
expanding strategy in the long run. Moreover, because of the company has its own fresh dough
facilities to supply fresh dough daily to both company owned and franchised bakery café , if there is
an accidental problem in deliver process, the store may lack of the fresh dough for producing in store.
Even though the alternative menus such as children s menus, innovative or trendy dishes and the
healthy menu are the opportunities of Panera to extend the target group of customers. The catering
service is the interesting opportunity for the Panera s management team to extend its market to
workplace, schools and parties. In addition, in my opinion expanding to outside United Stats is
another good opportunity to extend the market share as well. According to exhibit 9 in the case, the
direct rival of Panera would be Atlanla Bread Company which its products are almost the same line
with Panera (i.e. fresh baked breads, salads and sandwiches). If the company overpasses this threat
and does not differentiate its products and

Analysis Of The Movie Likewis
Q1. Describe Dennis s health as an adult living in London. Use an example to support your answer.
The physical aspect of Dennis s health is extremely poor, his cardiovascular health capability is shown
to be very weak and this can be seen in numerous scenes but, particularly the scene where he is a
chasing a shoplifter, he is extremely tired and cannot run for more than 30 seconds without having
trouble breathing and sweating profusely. Dennis has some major issues interfering with his physical
health e.g his smoking habit, alcohol abuse and bad diet. All these bad habits has lead him to have
poor physical health, this can also be seen by his weight in the movie
Mentally, Dennis is not in health either. He struggles with anxiety and sadness, maybe even
depression. Dennis does not have very good coping skills, he falls back into bad habits when things
get hard and he does not know how to deal with stressful or bad situations. An example of this is when
he finds out Libby and Whit are engaged, Dennis is shown in the next scene to resort back to drinking,
smoking and moping about. This a time when him having healthy coping skills would be valuable to
his mental health. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He cannot seem to regulate his emotions either, experiencing fits of rage and often feeling extremely
sad. Along with the sadness comes loneliness and that can be contributed to the social aspect of his
health. He does not surround himself with positive people, rather, people who abuse alcohol and
gamble recklessly; even gambling at Dennis s expense. Betting on Dennis s predicted failure at
completing the marathon really captures how they view him and value his

Visiting Phantom Bodies
Art 1010 Art Appreciation
Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most
thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an
excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I
treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center.
Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing
themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an
animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts
2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of
color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the
artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to
remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives.
Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous
repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012).
I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the
mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty,
which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and
symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to
enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a
lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the

Technological Innovations In World War One
War, whether intentional or not, surrounds us and has done for many centuries. The four years of the
First World War saw combat on a scale that had never been experienced before the conflict was global,
it affected countless millions and, due to rapid technological advances on all sides, the nature of
combat changed significantly. The final days of swords and cavalry charges gave way to the routine
use of machine guns and tanks a new technological era had been heralded, an era we still live in today.
In World War One (WW1), technological innovations were primarily aimed at ending the stalemate
and aiding the allied victory. War demands the development of new methods of destruction and with
that an increase in technology. WW1 saw the innovation

The Missing Statues
This short story was written by the British American writer Simon Van Booy and was published in the
collection Love begins in Winter in 2009. As one of the five tales written in the collection, the author
brings out the emotions to the surface with symbolic meanings and deeper psychology thoughts as
they are presented alongside the characters in these short stories. In The Missing Statues , we have a
main protagonist whose story we follow from the beginning towards the end.
This story is about an American diplomat who collapses onto a bench near St. Peter s Square. He has
seen something that remains him of his childhood and because of the memory, he starts sobbing. A

When the writer decides to write about a certain place in the story, there is always a deeper meaning to
it. As for our main character Max, it is not randomly that he is in Rome by the St. Peter s Square. It is
particularly the place, where there is a missing statue and this makes him depressed. Paradoxically, the
place is also being described as a joyful place where lots of people spend their time during various
things;
(...) where its eyes had once fallen upon the people who milled about the square, eating sandwiches,
taking photographs, feeding babies, birds, and the occasional vagrant who wandered in quietly from
the river (page 2, paragraph 4).
It is considered to be a great place including great weather as the climate is described with the
adjective bright . The definition of the word is sunny and clear, which indicates us that it is around the

Comparison of the Movie and Novel, Of Mice and Men Essay
A comparison between the opening section of the novel of of mice and men with the opening section
of the film of of mice and men.
Of mice and men is a novel written by John Steinbeck. A film of mice and men was also directed by
Gary Sinise in 1992. The novel and the film are a bit different from each other. The book was written
in the 1930 s, a time of high unemployment through out America and a time of racism and sexism and
segregation. The main themes are sexism, prejudice, loneliness, loyalty and protest. John Steinbeck
wrote the novel in the 1930 s a period known as The Depression. Of mice and men is about two
companions, George and Lennie, who are migrant ranch workers. They have gone to the Salinas River

The tension increases as George and Lennie try to out run the men on horses. The music becomes
faster and more exciting. There is a lot of sound in the background such as dogs barking, men
shouting, George telling Lennie to run faster. This increases the tension in the audience. George and
Lennie jump and hide in the river so that the dogs lose there scent. After George and Lennie lose the
men who were after them, they jumped on to a train which was going extremely fast. It is dark and
there are shadows. They had to jump on the train because they had no money and had to run away
from Weed.
There was an atmosphere of danger. There was no music at all except sounds of the train and whistles.
There was minimal lightening so that the setting could blend into the surroundings. There are a range
of camera shots which focus on George and Lennie. These shots show that they are workers and the
state they are in which is fatigued, exhausted and drained. In side the train is only the sound of the
conversation between George and Lennie. This conversation highlights the relationship between
George and Lennie and illustrates who is in control. It also indicates that George is being a father like
figure towards Lennie as he says go to sleep Lennie and take off your coat after Lennie says I m wet .
After that George and Lennie board a grey hound bus in a town, it is day time, with long camera shots
of George and Lennie.

  • 2. The Influencing Machine Summary Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld are the authors of the article The Influencing Machines . This article is about technology and is written through a comic style form. Gladstone s main idea on this article is that we should not fear technology. Gladstone s and Neufeld s comic style article about technology is the best way to convey her argument because it gives visuals to express her argument, has a different form of arrangement of her details and thesis, and she gives examples of modern technology that should not scare us. In her comic style article you can see there is a lot of visuals as you go through the reading. The visuals throughout the article helps the readers get her ideas more clearly than a regular article with no images. For example, on the first page of the article she talks about homophily and even though she gives the definition before the word, the picture of her in a flock of birds can help the reader understand and visually see that homophily means the groups we associate ourselves that have similar views to us. The Hard Engineering Solutions For Western Nations In December 2013, a massive tidal surge flooded 1,400 homes along the east coast of the U.K., which has managed to destroy and tumble some of these houses into the Atlantic Ocean (Carrington, 2014). Coastal erosion endangers coastal communities livelihood and source of income thus, defending it through efficient means is important as it stabilises the lives of the people who inhabit the coast. Upon entering the legal battle that would decide who had the right to preside over her reproductive decision, Carrie Buck knew that the outcome of the case would not only have an effect on her future but that of thousands of others who were having their rights brought into question as well. On My First Son (number XLV in the Epigrams) is a twelve line poem, just like the previous one and has a similar structure, though there are many differences, too. The poem starts surprisingly with a saying goodbye, where a mourning father says farewell to his first son. The father does not tell us the son s name, but there is a big hint in the first line: child of my right hand that is the meaning of the name Benjamin. Benjamin is a biblical figure whose name means son of the right side, which is usually interpreted as son of goodness, fortune and happiness.4 Even though the father does not introduce his son to the readers by name, he gives a very short but nice desciption of him by just telling his name s etymology. In the second line we can see that the father takes responsibility on the son s death, saying that it is his fault/sin that he died, because he had too high expectations of him. • 12. Analysis Of The Poem Dover Beach By Matthew Arnold Monelle Shuman English Lit 202 K. Morefield December 1, 2014 An Analysis of Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold Dover Beach is thought to be one of the best representations of the Victorian Period all together. It portrays the mood and tone of what the people experienced and felt at that time. Around the same time it was written, London had just experienced a massive boom in their population, growing from 2 to 6 million citizens. At the same time, London was becoming one of the first in the country to move towards industrialization, causing some to lose their jobs due to machinery performing them better and faster. People began to feel useless with technology taking over so quickly. Many suffered from the expansion during the early part, losing all hope of finding happiness and giving this moment in time a new name; A Time of Troubles . Many other authors, like Matthew Arnold, began writing their personal accounts of what they experienced or saw others experiencing, giving the feeling of melancholy. The reason why Dover Beach represents the Victorian period is because in the way Arnold wrote it, he didn t ground himself or stick to one specific subject. He creates a mood by using a variety of images, metaphors, similes, and adjectives. The narrator seems lonely, not mentioning any other person around him. One of the other major problems being experienced during this time are also represented in this poem. That problem is the loss of faith. Because of the new developments, ... Up in the North, right behind the Italians, the Dutch and Flemish were gearing up for their own shift in artwork to surpass their neighbors. Following inspiration from their Italian neighbors, and the International Gothic style, they looked forward and redefined painting as a style, while also changing arts meaning. Making the characters true to life in artwork was a new feat never before seen until the High Renaissance in Italy. Different types of ballets and their structural components separate one ballet from the next. It is important to understand the difference between the two main types of ballets: Romantic Ballet and Classical Ballet. • 22. Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling Methods As research across all fields and topics evolve, techniques on how to improve research endeavors, such as statistical modeling techniques, become important to utilize. Hierarchical linear modeling, similarly known as multilevel modeling, has been a statistical approach that has gained attention and improved the analysis and interpretation of research data (Osborne, 2000). Hierarchical linear modeling is a regression based statistical analysis that considers the hierarchical (i.e., multiple levels; nested) nature of variables within a dataset. Hierarchical data is data that has an organizational structure consisting of units of groups (i.e., levels) that are clustered under a larger group. Therefore, the variables within a dataset may have mediating effects and such effects can only be explored when taking into account the clustering of groups in the data. Prior to the wide spread use of hierarchical linear analyses, data that was structured hierarchically in nature was not analyzed appropriately due to the neglect of considering the correlated, underlying relationships among independent and dependent variables. Considering the correlated parameters of a proposed relationship within a dataset is of importance because the relating parameters would indicate that the variables are not independent. Thus, violating the assumption of independence and increasing the likelihood to make a Type 1 error, in addition to resulting in biased standard errors and hypothesis tests. ... Without Priestley even telling the audience that the play is set pre war it is obvious because of all the available luxuries and fineries such as champagne glasses and dessert plates . The war caused great shortages in goods and food, which led to rationing. No one in 1945 (when the play was written) would have been able to create a luxuriant celebratory dinner. This cunning use of setting deliberately reminds the audience of some of the luxuries lost because of the war. This is surely what is featured in An Inspector Calls. The 1912 society was a wicked one with evidence of wrong doing, sinfulness, spite, vileness (wickedness), a society in which there was no equality, democracy, or benefits. Without these important factors, a society cannot function, and wickedness is decreed in society. Weakness and wickedness is distributed throughout the play on an individual basis, mostly due to the hypocrisy and aristocracy of society. Mr Birling is delineated as a respectable and successful business man, with a wealthy family. Although by looking beyond the text we can determine that Mr Birling was in fact a selfish, greedy despot. This is not entirely Mr Birling s fault; it is more to do with the format of society. Mr Birling was paying Eva twenty two an six (a subsistent amount of money). Eva requested twenty five shillings . Mr Birling refused to pay and after Eva Smith stood up for what she believed in, she was sacked. The fact that Mr Birling acted, and fired Eva shows he was harsh in his actions. Also the fact that no one found anything wrong with Mr Birling s action, which is an example of wrong doing defines wickedness/weakness in society. Sheila Birling s sub sequential actions also encouraged Eva Smith to commit suicide. Sheila was the one who got Eva Smith fired from Milwards shop. When Sheila was trying on the dress, Eva laughed. • 24. The Importance Of The Self And Society Contrary to popular belief, the self and society are not separate entities, they are dialectic and influence the development of each other. This relationship can be examined through behavior and interaction of an individual s self with social reality. The self relates to society through a variety of different sociological theories including Dramaturgy, Symbolic interactionism, the looking glass self, phenomenology, and ethnomethodology. All the above argue that society and the self are shaped through experiences within our everyday lives, and that communication with other selves is necessary to make up the larger societal structure. Without the self, society would cease to exist. Socialization is the process through which the self emerges through social interaction (Gorea, 2017). The self is not an organic thing that has a specific location whose fundamental fate is to be born, to mature, and to die, nonetheless, is a dramatic effect arising from a scene that is presented (Goffman, 1959:252) In other words, the way we are socialized into society leaves an impression on ourselves, as well as our impression leaves a lasting effect on society. Through this process of socialization, we learn to adopt the perspective of others, and act in a manner molded to represent the expectations of society. As humans, we actively influence our own social development through our sense of self. We learn about ourselves through socialization by copying the actions of others, or through ... Sanford ENG 1301 !8th November, 2017 Description and Reflection of Dallas Museum The Dallas Museum is a renowned art museum established in 1903 and is located in Dallas, Texas (Neumann et al. 19). The Dallas Museum of art is one of the largest art museums in the United States of America containing more than 24,000 collections of art ranging from the ancient to the modern ones (MacDonald Brettell 112). There are numerous things inside the museum, such as the pieces of art, museum visitors, and the architecture, that relate to the understanding of the world outside the museum in terms of the day to day life and the human society. My goal in this essay is to think outside the box and describe the observations I made inside the museum and explain how they relate to my everyday life, the wider world, or the human society. The painting work done by C. Bertram Hartman was the first piece of art I observed inside the Dallas Museum. This painting, completed in 1930, consists of a campanile type tower, most likely a representation of a historic skyscraper (Walker 73). The painting applies a fractured perspective blended on an urban look with muted color palettes accompanied by harsh shadows (MacDonald Brettell 117). Kant creates a troubling situation on where a murderer is at the door asking whether or not the victim, he or she is looking for is hiding and whether are not one should lie or tell the truth about the victim s current hiding spot. An individual has a sense of inclination to do what is right, however Kant is acknowledging that if one does testify where the victim is then one is surely respecting the murderers intentions. Still, one cannot possibly have for seen those events. Under these circumstances, Kant insists the liar is still partially responsible for the victim s downfall. This notion that is clearly irrational demonstrates how little Kant has to argue about this topic. Even if the truth was told and the deed finished, then responsibility was shared. However, Kant does go and claims if one told the truth to the best of his knowledge, then neighbors might have come and apprehended the murder while he was searching the house for his enemy and the deed would have been prevented (8, 427). The new social, political and economic problems that began to emerge due to all of the changes developing in America during these times led to a need for reform. Reform was needed throughout society whether it was in regards to immigrants, civil rights, regulating trusts, or woman s rights to name a few. These problems extended equally into the problems that educational progressives sought out to reform. John Dewey is commonly used as the embodiment of progressive era reformation ideas but there were others as well, such as Grace C. Strachan, George Counts, and Booker T. Washington. John Dewey is considered to have been a pedagogical progressivist, meaning he focused on education reform by first reforming the way that the teaching was actually done. In the past education focused on teaching children facts, mostly by learning with repetition. This was a problem because it taught children information but not how to use that mindfulness with critical thinking in real world situations. These problems led John Dewey to write a series of articles that described his views on teaching and how it should be improved upon, this is called My Pedagogic Creed . Dewey wanted to equally incorporate a psychological, the abilities and interest of the student, and sociological, the needs and commitments of the society, aspect into teaching. He believed that children were born with blank slates and throughout their lives they would receive guidance unconsciously and be molded into adults (Dewey, 1). So the introduction of these aspects would help the molded children into better citizens and that would help drive the social economy into prosperity and overall a better democratic society. Dewey focused on the individual saying that education comes through the stimulation of the child s powers by the demands of the social situations in which he finds himself (Dewey, 1). He believed that you have to tap into an individual s own powers, tastes, and interests say then that could be used to relate it to past, current, and potential future social situations in which to ... • 43. Formalism And Realism In Film Short Critical Essay #3 Option 2 Classical film theories are generally divided into two main camps. They have been categorized as Formalism and Realism. The formalist approach looks at the structure and form of the film. It analyzes the method by which the story materializes and how it forces the viewer to react based on the way it is presented. It incorporates character development, photographic composition, camera movement, set design, editing, etc. to that end. The realist approach scrutinizes how a film represents reality. It is a mechanical reproduction of reality that strives for objectivity and realism. The primary focus is always every day, true to life characters and dilemmas, and the real life situations they are found in. Commonplace themes are the rule. To achieve realism in cinema it was necessary to direct attention to the physical and philosophic problems of ordinary existence. People emerge as victims of forces beyond their control in a world at times seemingly spinning out of control. Although there are also a few similarities, formalism and realism can be shown to offer substantially different approaches to the art of filmmaking and the study of film. Realism is a style of filmmaking that attempts to duplicate the look of objective reality with emphasis on authentic locations and details, long shots, lengthy takes, and a minimum of distortion. Andre Bazin championed cinematic realism. He identifies Realism as a movement of filmmakers who put their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my opinion the weaknesses of Panera Bread are the stringent criteria to gain a consideration for a Panera Bread franchise and the huge amount of initial investment for a Panera Bread bakery cafe referred in the exhibit 7 in this case which cost approximately 1,003,000 to 2,235,175 dollars plus real estate and related costs. This may limit the number of franchisees which could be a barrier of the expanding strategy in the long run. Moreover, because of the company has its own fresh dough facilities to supply fresh dough daily to both company owned and franchised bakery café , if there is an accidental problem in deliver process, the store may lack of the fresh dough for producing in store. Even though the alternative menus such as children s menus, innovative or trendy dishes and the healthy menu are the opportunities of Panera to extend the target group of customers. • 47. Visiting Phantom Bodies Art 1010 Art Appreciation Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center. Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts 2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives. Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012). I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty, which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
