The Bank For International Settlement
In an ever changing foreign exchange market countries and corporations were searching for a system
that could help reduce the risk involved while handling foreign exchange situations. With the demise
of the Bankhaus Herstatt in 1974 a system that could protect against the risk of FX settlements was in
dire need. The Bank for International Settlement developed the Continuous Linked Settlement (CLS)
in 2002. The group would provide the members associated with them the allowance to use the foreign
exchange market as a national payment system. According the textbook, International Finance by
Maurice Levi, the definition of the Continuous Linked Settlement is A procedure for banks to settle
accounts between themselves that credits and debit accounts simultaneously. It Is designed to reduce
the risk in the financial system. (Levi, p. 546) JPMorgan Chase and Co defines the process of the
Continuous Linked Settlement as a process which provides for payment vs payment in the settlement
of foreign exchange transactions. ( JP Morgan Treasury Services p. 1) From these two definitions, it
can be concluded that the CLS was indeed developed to help reduce the risk as payments from both
parties would be made simultaneously to ensure that the residing parties would receive their payment.
Before this system was in place it was very difficult to ensure that if one party made their required
payment that the other side would one even make the payment or to use the correct foreign exchange

Case Study Of Stieg Larsson s Lisbeth Salander
The best memory one could have even of one s own life is definitely his or her childhood. But when
the childhood goes wrong, our whole life is topsy turvy. The trauma experienced during childhood
pricks us day by day creating obsession and weakness thereby forming a barrier in our overall
personality development. Childhood trauma is more powerful that it can leave an everlasting
impression on our behaviour and personality. This paper makes a case study of Stieg Larsson s Lisbeth
Salander, a victim of childhood trauma and attempts to observe the change from the normal
behavioural pattern as an impact of the trauma experienced during her childhood. (Keywords: Stieg

The first and foremost effect of her trauma is reflected in her recalcitrant lifestyle. After releasing from
the psychiatric unit, Lisbeth was put under guardianship. By guardianship an individual who is not
capable of living independently and managing his or her own expenses is put under the control of a
responsible person who would inspect him/her from time to time, help in managing fund and produce
reports from time to time about the improvement of the individual. Lisbeth Salander was put under the
guardianship of an advocate Holger Palmgren, a nice man interested in altruistic activities. He is the
only positive inspiration in salander s life. He understood Salander and tolerated all her eccentricities
and violent behaviour like a father handling a difficult teenager. She had joined a rock band named
Evil fingers and started dressing herself like a junkie belonging to some Satan cult. She got herself
drunk, used drugs, had sexual intercourse with whomever she like no matter male or female. She had a
wayward Lifestyle and was usually an outlaw. Holger Palmgren never attempted to advise her on her
behaviour. Instead he talked to one of his friends at Milton security Agency and got her a job of
checking mails and making coffee. He was liberal enough to allow Lisbeth Salander handle her own
expenses. Suddenly one fine day Lisbeth discovered him when having stroke on the apartment floor
and had admitted him in the hospital. When the doctors had no hope of his survival, Lisbeth unable to
tolerate his upcoming death deserted him in the hospital. After the stroke, her guardian was changed
by the government. She was handed over to a new guardian, Nils Bjurman. This man turned out to be
anything but goodness. Right from the first conversation she understood that their relationship is going
to be quite complicated.

Media Influence On Eating Disorders
The topic that I want to research for my final researched argument essay is the media influence on
eating disorders focusing on children and adolescents. I want to explore, further expand, and support
my argument stating that media does have an influence on eating disorders especially in children and
adolescents using articles and reports to provide evidence and aid my thesis.
In my previous paper, I have written a paper about substainability, air pollution effects on human

Modern Energy Crisis Cause by Oil Companies Essay
Works Cited Since the September 11th incident it seems that energy prices have skyrocketed. Not long
ago gas prices were a dollar seventy five, but now it is almost four dollars a gallon. These days gas
and energy prices seem to be a weekly topic on local and national news. Every time there is some type
of fluctuation, it causes chaos, because it is probably a difference of ten cents and sometimes more. So
that raise you received, just throw it right out the window because it is not doing anything for you
except paying your energy bills and putting a petite more amount gas in your tank. People point
fingers in every direction searching for a scapegoat of this epidemic. Who is truly to blame? Oil

Oil companies think that since consumers are using more and more energy every year, they can jack
the prices up, and then say that they have to because of the demand. But that is a lie and they know it.
Because who makes the ultimate decision of how much they will charge for the amount of electricity
you used this month, and who determines what the three little plastic numbers on the gasoline signs,
that have so much meaning, will be? Oil companies?not the consumers. Oil companies are smart and
do what they can to make more money because its business, even if it is at our expense. ?Oil
companies are exploiting a tight supply demand situation.?, ?They are making a bad situation worse.?
(Brubaker) They are just taking advantage of a bad situation and trying to make themselves look like
the victim, because that is who everyone feels sorry for. They want people to be on their side so that
when fingers are pointed, none are coming in their direction. All in all, they are using the 9 11 incident
and the gap between demand and supply as an excuse to increase prices. But everyone knows oil
companies are full of it, including them. There are two concepts of explaining the inside issue of the
energy price crisis, profiteering and refining capacity. Profiteering is a term used to describe oil

Wayne Gretzky Quotes
Wayne Gretzky, a former Canadian ice hockey player and head coach, once said, You miss 100
percent of the shots you never take . This quote makes me look at Gretzky as an audacious and
perilous individual. It is understandable why he abides by this quote because it must have helped him
take chances and become a professional ice hockey player. It must have helped him because if he did
not take any chances, he could have missed out on the opportunity to become a ice hockey player. This
quote refers to a crucial life lesson that people should learn and practice. This life lesson would be to
take chances when you have the opportunity or else you will have already failed on that opportunity. I
acquiesce with this quote because in the book,

The Importance Of A Career In Nursing
I have been working in the nursing field for quite a while, and I can say that each day is an adventure.
Nursing is a profession that is physically and emotionally draining and oftentimes does not get the
credit when it s due. It can also be both physically emotionally demanding, having someone who
depends on your decisions and capabilities as a nurse, as they entrust their life on your hand, together
with the nursing demands responsibilities can be physically draining. Despite of this facts, by being a
nurse gives me a opportunity to help and serve others, make positive influence to people s lives and to
be the source of their strength during times of illness gives me an eternal satisfaction that no materials
things can ever replaced. And also, the thrill excitement that comes along w/ this career is also one of
the reasons why i decided to still chose and pursue my nursing career. With my knowledge based on
my experiences, I can say that Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the person as a whole,
through their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Sometimes even just by spending time
with them, holding their hands, talking about what is important to them and considering their faith,
spiritual and religious beliefs gives us a better opportunity as their nurse to make and implement plans
to provide them with a better care. Spiritual needs may be greater during times of illness, and a

Vertical Integration Case Study
Media Essay: David Russell How important is vertical integration for institutions and audience?
Vertical integration is when a company, e.g. Warner Bros oversees the planning and also the creation
of a specific product. The way they oversee this is by advertisement, marketing and distribution; for
example Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. A company which is vertically integrated, has
control over all the product s life when making, or selling the product. Warner Bro s. is not actually

Emotional Support animal needs to collect a letter from a physician stating the need for the dog. This

been abused by some over the years.
Emotional Support Animal Access to Public Places
The emotional support animal does not need to be professionally trained as they do not help to
perform a specific task but provide support just by being around you.
The laws under ADA only extends to the working animals that is the animals that are individually
trained to perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. Basis this distinction, the
emotional support animal is not protected by the same laws that govern service animals.
While the Service dogs are allowed access to all public places such as Parks, movie theaters, hospitals,
and restaurants; Emotional Support Animals are allowed access only to the housing complex with the
handler including those with no pet policies and on airplanes.

Persuasive Essay On Genetically Modified Food
At the rate the world is going at now, it is not far fetched to believe that in a few years the world
population could be at ten billion. In order to support all ten billion of these people, actions need to be
taken to ensure everyone will be fed. Some techniques to ensure food security include producing and
supporting the production of genetically modified foods, implicating the practice of urban farming and
aquaculture, better management of wasted foods and educating the general population on food waste.
One solution to help feed the global population is implementing the production of genetically
modified foods. A genetically modified food is an organism in which the genetic material has been
altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. Genetically
modified crops have been produced since 1994 and have many benefits to them compared to regular
crops. Many genetically modified crops have been altered so the plant has a stronger resilience to
insects, are more tolerable to herbicides, extreme weather conditions and have a longer shelf life. With
a longer shelf life, the crops are able to be exported to more remote locations without spoiling,
providing food to places that lack the ability to grow their own crops. Since these crops are more
resilient to insects, the amount of toxic bacteria that is added to help repel the insects is decreased.
Plants being stronger and more buoyant to common plant problems allow farmers to produce

The Iron Metal Of Steel
Introduction
Stainless Steel is a generic term for a large family of corrosion resistant alloys from iron (FE), are
containing carbon (C) and chromium and may contain other alloying elements to get different
properties of steel like Nickels, Molybdenum, Titanium and Manganese.
Steel metal is the most common and most widely used in major construction industries because it s
can be malleability to sheets, beams and bars, and also its very god to transfer the heat, electric and

Stainless steels can be divided into five categories:
1. Martensitic Stainless Steels:
These alloys have a chromium content that ranges from 11.50 to 18.00%. They have relatively high
carbon content from 0.15 to 1.20% compared to other stainless steels and molybdenum can also be
used. These grades can be hardened through heat treatment to offer strength and hardness. They are
magnetic. The common uses are knife blades, surgical instruments, shafts.
2. Ferritic Stainless Steel:
Alloys In ferritic grades, carbon is kept to low levels (C 0.08%) and the chromium content can range
from10.50 to 30.00%. only chromium is present as the main metallic alloying element. Common uses
are automotive exhaust systems (11.00%Cr), automotive trim (17.00%Cr 1.50%Mo), hot water tanks
(18.00%Cr 2.00%Mo Ti).
3. Austenitic Stainless Steels:
Alloys In austenitic grades, carbon is usually kept to low levels (C 0.08%). Chromium content ranges
from 16.00 to 28.00% and nickel content ranges from 3.50 to 32.00%. This chemical composition
allows them to maintain an austenitic structure from cryogenic temperatures up to the melting point of
the alloy. These alloys cannot be hardened through heat treatment. The key properties of these types of
stainless steel are excellent corrosion resistance, ductility and

The Beginning Of The Reformation
Task 1: Describe the beginning of the Reformation in Germany (including who, when, and where).
The Protestant Reformation was the 16th century religious, political, intellectual and cultural uprising
that splintered Catholic Europe, setting in place the structures and beliefs that would define the
continent in the modern era. In northern and central Europe, reformers like Martin Luther and Henry
VIII challenged papal authority and questioned the Catholic Church s ability to define Christian
practice. On October 31 1517, Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis to the door of the church of
Wittenberg. These theses were up for debate on the errors of indulgences and related matters which,
for him, came into the category of useless works which distracted Christians from their true path to
salvation, which was faith alone They argued for a religious and political redistribution of power into
the hands of Bible. The word spread because of the invention of the printing press which basically as
the internet of the 1500 s. They found that if the out the whole alphabet onto a bunch of lead blocks
inside out and upside down, they found that they could print these theses over and over. (Without it the
modern era would not have come about) . So after the theses went public, Most of Germany was in
uproar. Luther had to go into hiding will he translated the New Testament into German. After that
things moved rapidly and Luther s writings, attacking not just indulgences, but the

The Mystery of the Lost Colony
For centuries the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists has been one of the great mysteries in the
historical community. Within the span of three years, 120 colonists disappeared from an English
colony on Roanoke Island, a small piece of land off the coast of North Carolina. The evidence left
behind barely gives us a clue as to what could have happened to the entire colony. With the testimony
of John White, the leader of the colony that left the settlement to get more supplies, and what little
evidence there is, there have been many theories as to what actually caused the disappearance. When
trying to make a logical conclusion about the disappearance of the 120 inhabitants of the colony at
Roanoke, there are many factors to consider. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of this overtly hostile action was to obtain information from the chief about the defensive
capabilities of the surrounding Indian nations. This action only served to alienate the tribe and force
the settlers to depend on the fruits of their own labors... within months the first Roanoke colony was in
disarray and the settlers were near starving (Croatoan).
The colony barely lasted until Sir Francis Drake s fleet sailed by in 1586 when Drake offered supplies
or a trip back to their homeland. The settlers, starving and homesick, quickly accept the offer and
return to England. Not even a week later a relief ship arrives with supplies to discover the settlement
abandoned. The supply ship left fifteen men with a reasonable amount of food before departing (The
Settlement). Raleigh s first colony was an instructive test run for a second, more planned effort. He
determined that if the colony was relocated 80 miles north in the Chesapeake Bay shipping would be
essentially easier. He also decided to reconfigure the core of the colony by allowing seventeen women,
nine children, and two ex convicts under their new leader. John White was the expeditionary artist

The Themes Of Fate And Fate In Oedipus The King
Destiny and fate both play a similar role in this play. These are two crucial themes that are central to
the play; they have a devastating impact on the story line and unleash terror on the characters. Fate is
one of the opposition elements of the play that is influenced by one s own action but ultimately is
dictated by events beyond anybody s control. By elevating the importance of fate, Sophocles suggests
that characters cannot be fully responsible for their actions, but instead, they are unaware that their
destiny is controlled by a supreme power. These two main themes cause tragedy and despair to many
characters, however, the most affected one is King Oedipus.

His destiny decided by the God s is particularly cruel and pitiless since the oracle of Delphi decided
that his fate was to kill his father and marry his mother. An ancient Greek audience would accept the
wisdom of the gods. However, Sophocles skill as a playwright is to challenge the ancient Greek
received wisdom: even though Oedipus ought to accept his destiny because of some heinous sin
committed by his forefathers, he inspires sympathy in the audience by using dramatic irony. Oedipus
dire warning as he imposes on himself the penalty of exile: severe sentence // will be exile shows the
reader that Oedipus is ignorant of the fact that he is the guilty one and that therefore he is
inadvertently condemning his own future and his own life. Also, the quotation I curse him is another
example of dramatic irony since the King is unaware that he is cursing himself and consequently,
putting at risk and at danger his own future. This again shows the strength of the God s who are able
to arrange and decide people s destiny. Later on the play, the audience discover him as being blind
since he does not manage to see the truth about himself. Therefore, this makes him exposed and
vulnerable to his unknown and unwanted devastating destiny. Sophocles uses the quote: For blind of

My Experience At The United States Of America

while others dreamed of being police officers or knights. My notion was not as preposterous as theirs,
but almost as out of reach; I wanted to study in the United States of America, better said I wanted to

principles once they got past their childhood virtuous, I felt stuck.
Once again, I was a dreamer, forever stuck in the what ifs scenarios of my own imagination. Hence, I
was not contented, I wanted to experience the world outside of those city walls, the cities I saw and
heard about on TV, I wanted to experience a different world, because I simply reckoned that
everything would get better once I left. As I got older, those dreams, of moving aboard and starting all
over, only got more insane. On some days, where I felt like my world was breaking apart again, I
came home, crying and begging my mom to take a job aboard. To be honest, I had yet to learn about
visa restrictions and all the social security benefits that Germany, as compared to international
standards, had. In other words, my mom quickly made me realise that I had to wait for College to
finally leave the city behind. This, nevertheless, did not stop me from divulging it to everyone around
me. While my classmates always reaffirmed me as dewy eyed, adults simply labeled it as the guileless
state of reverie.

Taoism In Chinese Culture
For Chinese people, the importance of family, the institution which has patterned the entire social
matrix, can hardly be overestimated(Lin TY., Lin MC. ) . The family is a cherished aspect of Chinese
culture, playing a role in almost every piece of a person s life. Families are involved with everything
from behaviors to relationships. It is common for children to cohabitate with their parent until they
marry and in some cases even after marriage. In the Chinese culture, it is believed that the bigger the
family the more prestigious the household. The traditional family structure, there are usually includes
two or more generations living under one roof. Due to the influence of Confucianism in the Chinese
culture, most parents have a male ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the Confucianism period, women were expected to respond to the wishes and need of their
closely related male relatives. The mixture of the time period and the rise of Confucianism created a
social hierarchy where women were the bottom. Women had to obey their husbands and grown sons,
many of them didn t even have names. Being born male in this time period meant you had authority
and power. There have been drastic changes to gender roles moving forward. Moving onward women
were given just as much freedom as men. In this modern age, women are on the same level as men
with the few injustices such as making less than men or women being expected to be housewives.
Men have gone from having all the power to having to share, from being the heads of their families
where they had absolute power to sharing the role of provider and homemaker.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) remain the most ancient yet living traditions. There has been
increased global interest in traditional medicine (Hindawi) . Chinese medicine focuses on finding the
exact cause of illness instead of just offering a solution. Traditional Chinese medical practices forces
on the balance of yin and yang within a person and the five elements ( water, wood, fire, metal, and
earth). Metal corresponds to the lungs, wood to the liver, fire to the heart, water to the kidneys and
earth to the spleen. Among some of these healing practices, there

Looking Out for Number One:
Conflicting Cultural Values in Early Seventeenth Century Virginia
By: T.H Breen
The main focus of Breen s essay the focus is on the fact that colonists in Virginia were driven and
motivated to come to the New World, predominantly for monetary reasons. Virginia s soil was found
to be unusually well suited for growing tobacco, which is why it drove such a variety of people to
migrate there. The colonists, though said to be religious, were extremely individualistic, selfish, as
well as primarily drawn in by the economic opportunity in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Breen clearly depicts the Virginians attitude by saying that if they would have landed in a cold, rocky,
inhospitable country...they would probably have given up the entire venture... Throughout this essay
Breen reiterates the fact that the Virginians were out for private gain. They took it to such an extent
that they isolated themselves throughout the land, which they exploited to all ends. Their relationships
between each other and social behavior clearly portrayed the individualistic attitude they had. Slaves
were used as a resource to increase profit. In Virginia you seemed to either be a resource used for
profit or an exploiter who utilized those resources.
In order to keep all people able to work on the fields working, the colonists discouraged church and
school within Virginia. The lack of emphasis on education and religion was disgraceful. Although
from time to time something might have been mentioned, nothing was done. The military was also
something of great importance, but belittled. It was despicable how the fixation of personal gain was
more persuasive than the idea of creating a reliable system of defense.
Due to the lack of military planning, in 1622 there was a massacre. The Indians attacked the clearly
defenseless colony, in which 347 colonists had been killed. After this attack the Virginians realized
something had to be done. They couldn t live so far

Philadelphia Chromosome And Leukemia Essay
Essay 88: The Philadelphia Chromosome and Leukemia The so called Philadelphia chromosome is an
abnormal chromosomal structure present in most cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and
to a lesser extent in other types of leukemia, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The
origin of the term Philadelphia chromosome simply reflects the fact that a research team first
identified this abnormality in a blood sample from a leukemia patient in Philadelphia, PA.
CML vs. Acute Leukemias Unlike acute forms of leukemia, in which the cardinal manifestations
(fever, weight loss, and fatigue) appear abruptly, patients with CML may be asymptomatic for months
or even years prior to diagnosis. Even after diagnosis, many patients with chronic forms of leukemia
survive 5 10 years or longer. In approximately 90% of CML patients an abnormal structure known as
the Philadelphia chromosome results from an event known as a chromosomal translocation. ... Show

In CML, a chromosomal translocation occurs between chromosomes 9 and 22. Geneticists abbreviate
this event t9:22. The result of this t9:22 translocation is the juxtaposition of the c abl tyrosine kinase
gene on chromosome 9 with the bcr (breakpoint cluster region) on chromosome 22. The product is an
abnormal fusion gene that encodes a constitutively active tyrosine kinase called bcr abl. The bcr abl
protein is a perpetually active version of a cell proliferation signal. The normal versions of these
intracellular tyrosine kinases are generally inactivated unless the cell is responding to growth factors
or cytokines that promote cell proliferation. The bcr abl protein is a different story. It acts like a
broken record, continuously telling the cell to copy its DNA and undergo cell division. Consequently,
lymphocytes that undergo the t9:22 translocation begin to proliferate out of

Essay about Renting Versus Buying
Buying a home can be an exciting experience for anyone. However, in some cases you just might be
better off continuing to rent your home. There are many advantages to buying a home. However, it is
not for everyone and buying varies from individual to individual. Currently more people are leaning
towards renting but this could change in the near future.
When someone makes the decision to buy or rent a home they must consider the advantages and
disadvantages of each. In buying a home the primary advantage is that you actually own it. You can do
whatever you want with it. Also, you are building equity as the years go by. People today have
problems saving for their future (CNN Money, 2014). However, when they buy a home, the ... Show

You might be better off paying a reasonable amount for rent and saving your money when buying
seems more logical. Also, it depends on lifestyle preferences. Some people may not want to do all the
work that comes along with owning a home. As of right now many people are leaning towards renting.
This is because the market is going down. Some don t want to commit to a mortgage if when they go
to sell they can t find any buyers.
It is likely that the renting trend will decline and buying will increase in the future but it is hard to say
when. However, if rent keeps rising and prices keep falling, fearful buyers could slowly become
bargain hunters. (Business Week, 2014). I feel that people will eventually get tired of spending there
money on rent and will want to invest more in there future. I don t think that the real estate market will
ever be a boom again. I believe that people have learned that just because interest rates are low doesn t
mean they can financially take on a mortgage. Overall, buying a house is a big decision and should be
looked at carefully. You should look at the advantages and disadvantages of each and decide what is
best for you in your life. There is no way to pin point if buying or renting is best for anyone. Currently
many prefer to rent their homes. However, as rent rise, a majority may soon change their minds.

Rough Draft Of A Personal Essay Example
Farm kid, sister, and coffee lover are a couple of things that describe me. However, those are not the
things that define me. I believe there are two adjectives that define me: hard working and passionate.
Hard work and passion influence almost everything that I do in life. I also contribute the small
successes that I have had to being hard working and passionate. Hard work and passion are two things
that were fostered on my family s farm. Growing up, each day I would hop in my grandpa s old, red
Chevy and ride down to the farm to spend the day with him. We fed the animals, scouted crops, and
did other miscellaneous jobs. Working on the farm all day with my grandpa built my strong work
ethic. And as for passion, my passion for the agricultural industry grew deeper each day that I spent at
the farm. The experiences on my family s farm shaped who I am. Not only did it build my work ethic
and foster my passion for agriculture but, it also defined my values, developed valuable skills, and

livestock and other various projects. Through those projects I learned that the agricultural industry has
such a large impact on the daily lives of people, and I too wanted to be part of that impact.
Participating in FFA throughout high school gave me the opportunity to compete in many Career
Development Events, attend leadership conferences, camps, and conventions, and volunteer for
service projects. FFA again made me realize that I had a future in the agricultural industry and that I

Comparing Beowulf And Gilgamesh
The Babylonian Gilgamesh and the Christian Priest Beowulf both feature important heroes. An
important part of a hero s journey is the transformation that the hero s character goes through over the
course of the story. In Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is an ill mannered king, while in Beowulf; Beowulf is a
great warrior for his town. These two works show the different processes of a hero and the process
they must go through to be remembered as one. Gilgamesh includes the idea that he can go on a
journey to find the cure, for him to become immortal and live forever. By contrast, Beowulf goes on a
journey by going on a mission to defeat the great monster Grendel. Elsewhere in Gilgamesh, however
we find the idea, just as we do with Beowulf, that to become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

These hero s second and third journeys within themselves would have to be the main and lowest
points in their lives. In Gilgamesh, we see the once arrogant king becoming weak and lost. Gilgamesh
is searching for the right path to take to try and make his life better. His character is sad and depressed
and needs guidance on the right path to take. As the author states, Therefore, Gilgamesh decides to
seek out Utnapishtim, who alone of human beings has achieved immortality. Gilgamesh stops at the
inn of the alewife Siduri to ask for directions to Utnapishtim land. She tells Gilgamesh that he will
first need to find Urshanabi and that Urshanabi can take him to see Utnapishtim. Later that same
author mentions, When Gilgamesh asks Utnapishtim how he became immortal, Utnapishtim relates
the Flood myth Utnapishtim explains that his own immortality was a special case, a direct byproduct
of the Flood. If, however, Gilgamesh really wants to become immortal, Utnapishtim says, he should
first stay awake for six days and seven nights. Exhausted by his travels, Gilgamesh quickly falls
asleep and sleeps for six days and seven nights, until Utnapishtim wakes him. Then Gilgamesh knows
for sure: he is going to die. In contrast Beowulf is also faced with some big decisions to make to
protect his small town. Since one of Beowulf s major transformations involves

Paul Laurence Dunbar Sympathy
As an African American author in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Jim Crow laws
prevailed and separate but equal was considered constitutional, Paul Laurence Dunbar attempted to
display the feelings of African Americans. Dunbar said that he wanted to interpret my own people
through song and story and prove to the many that we are more human than African (Baym and
Levine). In his poems We Wear the Mask and Sympathy , Dunbar skillfully revealed the discontent of
blacks facing unjust treatment by using metaphor and imagery. The author extracted from his own
experiences and family history in an endeavor to express the condition of his entire race in this
grueling period. Paul Laurence Dunbar, born in 1872, is the son of two former ... Show more content

Throughout both poems, the author paints pictures to help the reader visualize the social captivity of
African Americans. The fourth line of We Wear the Mask reads, With torn and bleeding hearts we
smile (Dunbar). Dunbar creates a mental image in the reader s mind of someone with a ripped open
and bleeding chest that grits their teeth and smiles through the pain. This would obviously be an
excruciating situation. The writer uses such a vivid description to expose how agonizing the condition
truly was for African Americans in the late 19th century, yet, they hid their suffering from others. If
Dunbar s imagery in We Wear the Mask appears flamboyant, it is even more so in Sympathy . The
author constructs a beautiful depiction of nature in the first stanza by using the phrases sun is bright ,
wind stirs soft , springing grass , stream of glass , first bird sings , first bud opes , and faint perfume
(Dunbar). Although this seems like a pleasant illustration, the first and last lines of the stanza help the
reader see that it is not enjoyable from the outside looking in. The caged bird can only watch others
enjoy this stunning scenery while he is trapped and cannot encounter it himself, just as African
Americans observed whites that had the freedom to enjoy the luxuries of America but could not
partake in these indulgences themselves. The imagery of the second stanza is more gruesome than the
first. Dunbar uses the phrases beats his wing , blood is red , cruel bars , pain still throbs , old scars ,
and keener sting to help the reader imagine a physical representation of the emotional misery of black
Americans due to the Jim Crow laws. Although the oppression African Americans confronted was
more emotional than physical, Dunbar s use of imagery helps the reader understand their suffering in a
tangible

The Theory Of The Conspiracy Theory
The door to the bulky module unlatched to a whirr, and from behind it emerged a figure cladded in
white. One giant leap for mankind, the man uttered, as he descended the short flight of stairs down to
ground level, disengaging his fishbowl helmet to the pleased Cut! of the director and the thrilled
clapping of everyone else in the studio. This was Apollo 11 for the moon landing conspiracy theorists,
who will swear by their beliefs despite the standard opinion of the television and the textbook. Minute
details differ, but the foremost claim of the conspiracy theory goes something like this: in 1969, the
United States was unable to perform a manned lunar landing, and therefore staged the Apollo missions
in an attempt to defeat the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the New York Herald in Paris remarked, It is difficult to fly. It is easy to say, We have flown, two
things fueled skepticism in the face of scientific achievement: a disbelief in technological capabilities,
and a lack of demonstrable results. The Apollo missions extinguished both concerns. In terms of
technology, hoax believers frequently mention the Soviets constant lead in the Space Race. They
achieved many firsts, but were never able to send men to the moon; it seems logical, then, that this
feat must have been beyond the Americans as well. But in reality, the United States was never far
behind. In fact, by 1965, it overtook its rival, reaching many milestones that were key to manned lunar
missions (e.g. space rendezvous). NASA, thus, was in a good position to travel to the moon and to the
moon it traveled. As noted in Lunar Rocks and Soils from Apollo Missions, it even brought back some
souvenirs, in the form of 842 pounds of moon rocks. These samples possess unique properties unseen
in any Earth counterparts, and to forge these rocks in such large volumes would have been impossible.
Rocks aside, there are other reasons to believe in the moon landings as well: reflectors left on the lunar
surface, or landing site imagery, to name a few. Surely, the validity of the landings lacks no evidence
in support. Then again, the vast majority of us have never been in space, on the moon,

Essay On Can And Can
Can and could are modal verbs that describe the possibility or ability. A can is considered as the verb
in present form and could is its past form.
There are more different circumstances in which their use is changed and they illustrate diverse

What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu
Interpretative essay
What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and
its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on the
same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every American
should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more multicultural, and to
capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and come up with what they
think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to capture the view of the nation,
every American should be involved in the making of the list. The most engaging part of this article is
Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should always change according to the times. It
should not be cast in stone because things in this day and age change really fast; what is a hit this
month will be old news in the next one. This is what cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is
going on around you and being open to learn new things as they emerge. This can also be said of
education; in order to stay educated in any field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new
developments.
The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since it
helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010). When we are familiar
with all or some of the things that define America as a culture,

Sordaria Lab Report
Prior the conduction of this experiment, Sordaria of different ascus types (WT and T) were exposed to
significant levels of radiation. There were three experimental groups for this experiment and crosses
accordingly. Crosses were set up in containers by placing different Sordaria groups in alternating
fourths of the mating agar. The Sordaria naturally grew outwards to the different adjacent Sordaria
groups and inter mated through meiosis. This provided a variety of different crosses throughout each
experimental group. The squashes were prepared by obtaining a clear slide and placing a small amount

they were busted by applying slight pressure with an eraser head, but done carefully enough not to pop

Obesity Epidemic
The American Obesity Epidemic The American obesity epidemic is an issue that has become
increasingly prevelant over the years. While this is a very large and complex issue, it can be primarily
pin pointed to a few key factors, such as poverty, lifestyle, and the types and availability of food these
days.
The largest contributing factor to obesity in this country is poverty. Charles L. Baum discusses this
extensively in his article The Effects of Food stamps on Obesity. Poverty has historically been
associated with a decrease in food consumption. This at least partially changed in 1964, when the
Food Stamp Act began guaranteeing food for those in poverty. Since the act s passage, obesity has
been steadily on the rise in this country, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children s health and wellness expert Dr. Alan Greene discusses this likeness of sugar to a drug in
depth in his Healthline.com article Is Sugar an Addictive Drug. Evidence is mounting that too much

amped up levels added to many processed foods. Medical addiction changes brain chemistry to cause
binging, craving, withdrawal symptoms, and sensitization. Excess added sugar can do just that,
through changes in the same pathways as addiction to amphetamines or alcohol. Sugar addiction could
be an even harder habit to break, according to recent evidence about how added sugar affects our

  • 2. The Bank For International Settlement In an ever changing foreign exchange market countries and corporations were searching for a system that could help reduce the risk involved while handling foreign exchange situations. With the demise of the Bankhaus Herstatt in 1974 a system that could protect against the risk of FX settlements was in dire need. The Bank for International Settlement developed the Continuous Linked Settlement (CLS) in 2002. The group would provide the members associated with them the allowance to use the foreign exchange market as a national payment system. According the textbook, International Finance by Maurice Levi, the definition of the Continuous Linked Settlement is A procedure for banks to settle accounts between themselves that credits and debit accounts simultaneously. It Is designed to reduce the risk in the financial system. (Levi, p. 546) JPMorgan Chase and Co defines the process of the Continuous Linked Settlement as a process which provides for payment vs payment in the settlement of foreign exchange transactions. ( JP Morgan Treasury Services p. 1) From these two definitions, it can be concluded that the CLS was indeed developed to help reduce the risk as payments from both parties would be made simultaneously to ensure that the residing parties would receive their payment. Before this system was in place it was very difficult to ensure that if one party made their required payment that the other side would one even make the payment or to use the correct foreign exchange ... • 3. Case Study Of Stieg Larsson s Lisbeth Salander The best memory one could have even of one s own life is definitely his or her childhood. But when the childhood goes wrong, our whole life is topsy turvy. The trauma experienced during childhood pricks us day by day creating obsession and weakness thereby forming a barrier in our overall personality development. Childhood trauma is more powerful that it can leave an everlasting impression on our behaviour and personality. This paper makes a case study of Stieg Larsson s Lisbeth Salander, a victim of childhood trauma and attempts to observe the change from the normal behavioural pattern as an impact of the trauma experienced during her childhood. (Keywords: Stieg Larsson, Lisbeth Salander, Female Detective Fiction, Trauma, Behaviour pattern) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first and foremost effect of her trauma is reflected in her recalcitrant lifestyle. After releasing from the psychiatric unit, Lisbeth was put under guardianship. By guardianship an individual who is not capable of living independently and managing his or her own expenses is put under the control of a responsible person who would inspect him/her from time to time, help in managing fund and produce reports from time to time about the improvement of the individual. Lisbeth Salander was put under the guardianship of an advocate Holger Palmgren, a nice man interested in altruistic activities. He is the only positive inspiration in salander s life. He understood Salander and tolerated all her eccentricities and violent behaviour like a father handling a difficult teenager. She had joined a rock band named Evil fingers and started dressing herself like a junkie belonging to some Satan cult. She got herself drunk, used drugs, had sexual intercourse with whomever she like no matter male or female. She had a wayward Lifestyle and was usually an outlaw. Holger Palmgren never attempted to advise her on her behaviour. Instead he talked to one of his friends at Milton security Agency and got her a job of checking mails and making coffee. He was liberal enough to allow Lisbeth Salander handle her own expenses. Suddenly one fine day Lisbeth discovered him when having stroke on the apartment floor and had admitted him in the hospital. When the doctors had no hope of his survival, Lisbeth unable to tolerate his upcoming death deserted him in the hospital. After the stroke, her guardian was changed by the government. She was handed over to a new guardian, Nils Bjurman. This man turned out to be anything but goodness. Right from the first conversation she understood that their relationship is going to be quite complicated. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I want to explore, further expand, and support my argument stating that media does have an influence on eating disorders especially in children and adolescents using articles and reports to provide evidence and aid my thesis. In my previous paper, I have written a paper about substainability, air pollution effects on human health, and more. • 5. Modern Energy Crisis Cause by Oil Companies Essay Works Cited Since the September 11th incident it seems that energy prices have skyrocketed. Not long ago gas prices were a dollar seventy five, but now it is almost four dollars a gallon. These days gas and energy prices seem to be a weekly topic on local and national news. Every time there is some type of fluctuation, it causes chaos, because it is probably a difference of ten cents and sometimes more. So that raise you received, just throw it right out the window because it is not doing anything for you except paying your energy bills and putting a petite more amount gas in your tank. People point fingers in every direction searching for a scapegoat of this epidemic. Who is truly to blame? Oil companies are to blame for the rising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oil companies think that since consumers are using more and more energy every year, they can jack the prices up, and then say that they have to because of the demand. But that is a lie and they know it. Because who makes the ultimate decision of how much they will charge for the amount of electricity you used this month, and who determines what the three little plastic numbers on the gasoline signs, that have so much meaning, will be? Oil companies?not the consumers. Oil companies are smart and do what they can to make more money because its business, even if it is at our expense. ?Oil companies are exploiting a tight supply demand situation.?, ?They are making a bad situation worse.? (Brubaker) They are just taking advantage of a bad situation and trying to make themselves look like the victim, because that is who everyone feels sorry for. They want people to be on their side so that when fingers are pointed, none are coming in their direction. All in all, they are using the 9 11 incident and the gap between demand and supply as an excuse to increase prices. But everyone knows oil companies are full of it, including them. There are two concepts of explaining the inside issue of the energy price crisis, profiteering and refining capacity. Profiteering is a term used to describe oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Wayne Gretzky Quotes Wayne Gretzky, a former Canadian ice hockey player and head coach, once said, You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take . This quote makes me look at Gretzky as an audacious and perilous individual. It is understandable why he abides by this quote because it must have helped him take chances and become a professional ice hockey player. It must have helped him because if he did not take any chances, he could have missed out on the opportunity to become a ice hockey player. This quote refers to a crucial life lesson that people should learn and practice. This life lesson would be to take chances when you have the opportunity or else you will have already failed on that opportunity. I acquiesce with this quote because in the book, ... With my knowledge based on my experiences, I can say that Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the person as a whole, through their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Sometimes even just by spending time with them, holding their hands, talking about what is important to them and considering their faith, spiritual and religious beliefs gives us a better opportunity as their nurse to make and implement plans to provide them with a better care. In order to support all ten billion of these people, actions need to be taken to ensure everyone will be fed. Some techniques to ensure food security include producing and supporting the production of genetically modified foods, implicating the practice of urban farming and aquaculture, better management of wasted foods and educating the general population on food waste. One solution to help feed the global population is implementing the production of genetically modified foods. A genetically modified food is an organism in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. Genetically modified crops have been produced since 1994 and have many benefits to them compared to regular crops. Many genetically modified crops have been altered so the plant has a stronger resilience to insects, are more tolerable to herbicides, extreme weather conditions and have a longer shelf life. With a longer shelf life, the crops are able to be exported to more remote locations without spoiling, providing food to places that lack the ability to grow their own crops. • 15. The Mystery of the Lost Colony For centuries the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists has been one of the great mysteries in the historical community. Within the span of three years, 120 colonists disappeared from an English colony on Roanoke Island, a small piece of land off the coast of North Carolina. The evidence left behind barely gives us a clue as to what could have happened to the entire colony. With the testimony of John White, the leader of the colony that left the settlement to get more supplies, and what little evidence there is, there have been many theories as to what actually caused the disappearance. When trying to make a logical conclusion about the disappearance of the 120 inhabitants of the colony at Roanoke, there are many factors to consider. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of this overtly hostile action was to obtain information from the chief about the defensive capabilities of the surrounding Indian nations. This action only served to alienate the tribe and force the settlers to depend on the fruits of their own labors... within months the first Roanoke colony was in disarray and the settlers were near starving (Croatoan). The colony barely lasted until Sir Francis Drake s fleet sailed by in 1586 when Drake offered supplies or a trip back to their homeland. The settlers, starving and homesick, quickly accept the offer and return to England. Not even a week later a relief ship arrives with supplies to discover the settlement abandoned. The supply ship left fifteen men with a reasonable amount of food before departing (The Settlement). Raleigh s first colony was an instructive test run for a second, more planned effort. He determined that if the colony was relocated 80 miles north in the Chesapeake Bay shipping would be essentially easier. He also decided to reconfigure the core of the colony by allowing seventeen women, nine children, and two ex convicts under their new leader. These are two crucial themes that are central to the play; they have a devastating impact on the story line and unleash terror on the characters. Fate is one of the opposition elements of the play that is influenced by one s own action but ultimately is dictated by events beyond anybody s control. By elevating the importance of fate, Sophocles suggests that characters cannot be fully responsible for their actions, but instead, they are unaware that their destiny is controlled by a supreme power. These two main themes cause tragedy and despair to many characters, however, the most affected one is King Oedipus. In the Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King , the irony of fate and destiny is ... His destiny decided by the God s is particularly cruel and pitiless since the oracle of Delphi decided that his fate was to kill his father and marry his mother. An ancient Greek audience would accept the wisdom of the gods. However, Sophocles skill as a playwright is to challenge the ancient Greek received wisdom: even though Oedipus ought to accept his destiny because of some heinous sin committed by his forefathers, he inspires sympathy in the audience by using dramatic irony. Oedipus dire warning as he imposes on himself the penalty of exile: severe sentence // will be exile shows the reader that Oedipus is ignorant of the fact that he is the guilty one and that therefore he is inadvertently condemning his own future and his own life. Also, the quotation I curse him is another example of dramatic irony since the King is unaware that he is cursing himself and consequently, putting at risk and at danger his own future. This again shows the strength of the God s who are able to arrange and decide people s destiny. Later on the play, the audience discover him as being blind since he does not manage to see the truth about himself. Philadelphia Chromosome And Leukemia Essay Essay 88: The Philadelphia Chromosome and Leukemia The so called Philadelphia chromosome is an abnormal chromosomal structure present in most cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and to a lesser extent in other types of leukemia, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The origin of the term Philadelphia chromosome simply reflects the fact that a research team first identified this abnormality in a blood sample from a leukemia patient in Philadelphia, PA. CML vs. Acute Leukemias Unlike acute forms of leukemia, in which the cardinal manifestations (fever, weight loss, and fatigue) appear abruptly, patients with CML may be asymptomatic for months or even years prior to diagnosis. The product is an abnormal fusion gene that encodes a constitutively active tyrosine kinase called bcr abl. The bcr abl protein is a perpetually active version of a cell proliferation signal. The normal versions of these intracellular tyrosine kinases are generally inactivated unless the cell is responding to growth factors or cytokines that promote cell proliferation. Throughout both poems, the author paints pictures to help the reader visualize the social captivity of African Americans. The fourth line of We Wear the Mask reads, With torn and bleeding hearts we smile (Dunbar). Dunbar creates a mental image in the reader s mind of someone with a ripped open and bleeding chest that grits their teeth and smiles through the pain. This would obviously be an excruciating situation. The writer uses such a vivid description to expose how agonizing the condition truly was for African Americans in the late 19th century, yet, they hid their suffering from others. If Dunbar s imagery in We Wear the Mask appears flamboyant, it is even more so in Sympathy . The author constructs a beautiful depiction of nature in the first stanza by using the phrases sun is bright , wind stirs soft , springing grass , stream of glass , first bird sings , first bud opes , and faint perfume (Dunbar). Although this seems like a pleasant illustration, the first and last lines of the stanza help the reader see that it is not enjoyable from the outside looking in. The caged bird can only watch others enjoy this stunning scenery while he is trapped and cannot encounter it himself, just as African Americans observed whites that had the freedom to enjoy the luxuries of America but could not partake in these indulgences themselves. The imagery of the second stanza is more gruesome than the first. Dunbar uses the phrases beats his wing , blood is red , cruel bars , pain still throbs , old scars , and keener sting to help the reader imagine a physical representation of the emotional misery of black Americans due to the Jim Crow laws. Although the oppression African Americans confronted was more emotional than physical, Dunbar s use of imagery helps the reader understand their suffering in a tangible ... They achieved many firsts, but were never able to send men to the moon; it seems logical, then, that this feat must have been beyond the Americans as well. But in reality, the United States was never far behind. In fact, by 1965, it overtook its rival, reaching many milestones that were key to manned lunar missions (e.g. space rendezvous). NASA, thus, was in a good position to travel to the moon and to the moon it traveled. What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu Interpretative essay What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn new things as they emerge. This can also be said of education; in order to stay educated in any field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new developments. The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since it helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010).
