Diversity In California
This week s topic of California becoming such a diverse powerhouse in the U.S and also how
California being such a diverse state plays an important role in the U.S. government . California is a
hybrid democracy which means there are two types of democracies within California s government.
Representative means that we elect of political officials that best represents our interests. This also
happens on a federal level which is why we have various elections throughout the years that allows us
to vote for who we want in Congress, also on who we want to be our president. Direct Democracy
gives power to the people in California allowing us to have a voice in how we want to see our state
government run California (The Basics, 3:33). These two democracies ... Show more content on

California citizens consist of 39% Latino, 38.8 White, 5.8% Black, 13.0% Asian, and less than 1%
Native American (Lecture 2, California Diversity). It is stated that according to California Governor
Jerry Brown s new state budget, Latinos are projected to become the largest single racial/ethnic group
in the state by March of 2014 (Hugo Lopez, Mark. 2014). The large increase in the Latino population
over recent years has become such a huge media topic in today s news because people think that
America s immigration policy and laws are too loose and are allowing people to cross the border
illegally. Our current president Donald Trump believes that our immigration laws are horrible and
allows criminals to cross the border into the U.S. which is making Americans lose jobs and cause
crime rates to rise. He stated various time that he wants to make laws that would prohibit such people
from coming over to America. This isn t the first time that diversity has affected policies that the
government has made. An example of this would be Proposition 187, the Save our State initiative.
This initiative banned public services such as education and emergency care to undocumented peoples

Zoe Foils
In the book After the Ending, Lindsey Pogue and Lindsey Fairleigh the two main characters, Danielle
and Zoe, were foils of each other. Zoe s brother, Jason, perfectly summarized the two when he
described Zoe as serious and pessimistic and Danielle as one who sees the glass half full. Their
appearances also balance each other out, as Jason pictured Danielle as vivacious, with bright red curls,
whereas Zoe is dark, but with eyes as bright as the ocean. When Jason described the two girls, he
illustrated that even though both their looks and personalities are completely opposite, these yin and
yang qualities are what bonded them together and created their mile deep friendship. In addition, those
different attributes and how they are foils

Fto Program
Field training officer (FTO) programs were created so that agencies could better manage the post
academy training for officers that traditionally were not hired into this field of work (Doerner, 2012).
The good old boy program was out, and the implementation of a structured, standardized FTO
program became the replacement (Doerner, 2012). In order to implement a FTO program, it must be
defined so that the overall objectives are met. The San Jose Police Department was the first to initiate
an FTO program. With some slight changes, this system is typically the one in use today (Doerner,
2012).
The FTO program is a set period of time broken down into phases where each phase allows the rookie
officer more and more responsibilities (Doerner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Studies in the 80 s have shown that a greater percentage of blacks and females could not successfully
complete the FTO program compared to white male officers (Doerner, 2012). If this was based on
unfairly treating blacks and females during the training, then the concern is that racism exists and
much time and money has been wasted getting the rookie officers to this point (Doerner, 2012). This
would also have a negative impact on any affirmative action efforts. However, Doerner conducted an
extensive study in 1989 of over 300,000 ratings and concluded that white FTO s did not unfairly treat
black rookies and male FTO s did not unfairly use different standards for female rookie officers
(Doerner, 2012). Further investigation discovered that blacks struggled in passing radio use, legal
knowledge, and report writing, which was surprising as they were required to have a 2 year college
degree (Doerner, 2012). Changes to the demographic unbalancing of FTO instructors, lengths of
phases being increased, and lessening the expectations of the program all were implemented to
overcome the concerns of affirmative actions and barriers (Doerner,

Chinese Foreign Policy And Its Effect On The Regional...
The general consensus among scholars concludes that China is assertive (Chen, Pu Johnston, 2014,
176). The assertive conduct of China can have an impact on the regional order and stability in South
China Sea. The scholars have different views on the assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy (Chen et
al., 2014, 176). The argument in favour of implementing assertive foreign policy affirms that China
has good intentions regarding the South China Sea (Chen et al., 2014, 181). China is required to have
an assertive conduct because a moderate approach would not bring regional stability (Fangyin, 2016,
877). The opposing argument on assertive foreign policy is concerned with the aggressive and
provocative behaviour of China (Chen et al., 2014, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
China holds historic rights to the South China Sea through its nine dash line in most of the contested
waterways in the region where it can extract resources (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 77 78). The maritime
claims and sovereign claims of China in the South China Sea through the nine dash line must comply
with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China had historic rights to
the South China Sea through the nine dash line until it ratified the UNCLOS in 1996 (Rapp Hooper,
2016, 78). China is bound to follow the international law to defend its sovereign rights despite the
tribunal in the Hague ruling in favour of the Philippines (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 81).
The ruling of the tribunal in The Hague was hard on China (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). The arbitrary
decision of the tribunal has brought China to a legal crossroads (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 82). The ruling
has placed limitations to the maritime claims of China in the South China Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016,
80). The maritime claims of China to water and airspace in the South China Sea was declared invalid
under international law (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 76). China cannot legally continue to declare military
zones in the water or airspace around the reefs it occupies, nor can it do so more than 12 nautical miles
from the rocks it controls (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). The invalidated the maritime claims of China to

Analysis Of The Movie The Bedroom With Fill The Gaps...
In 1979, Dubus creates an alternate world, where he propels readers through the emotional whirlpool
spinning in the mind of Matt Fowler, a man who is trying to cope with the tragic murder of his son; as
the tide, acting through his wife, becomes increasingly overwhelming, Matt is driven to seek revenge
through the killing of Richard Fowler (Dubus 1123 1136). Years later, in 2001, director Todd Field
produces the film adaptation In the Bedroom to fill the gaps Dubus s short story cannot; while the
story focuses more on the killings themselves, Field allows views to understand the emotional turmoil
that pushes characters to the edge, ultimately explaining the journey of how the killings come to be (In
the Bedroom). Although Dubus wrote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the argument, the cinematographer films the scene as a shot reverse shot, further implying that
Matt and Ruth are in conflict. One can see the veil depression places Ruth after Frank s death,
enabling her to ask Matt for the literal unspeakable task of murder; in a short story, one cannot read
silence, but the silence permeating the film speaks louder than the Dubus s words.
While in neither the film nor short story does Ruth outwardly express her desire for the death of
Richard, within the film, one is able to glimpse into the inner workings of Matt s mind, understanding
the emotional manipulation, brought on by his wife, he endures. Matt describes how Ruth has concrete
objections which he trie[s] to overcome and in his intent to do this[,] he neglect[s] his own objects
(1127); here, Dubus is indirectly telling readers this is the foundation Ruth has previously built in her
marriage, allowing her to manipulate Matt into carrying out tasks, or specifically it (1136).
Furthermore, several times in the short story, Matt convinces himself that he [is] certain that [Ruth
knows and] she [is] waiting for him for she knows (Dubus 1125, 1134). In Field s adaptation, one can
see the change in behavior and demeanor both Matt and Ruth undergo, driving Matt to commit a
seemingly inevitable killing. Several times in the film, the camera focuses on Matt and then quickly
switches to a smash cut, implying disruption and cacophony follow Matt; however,

Chevy Colorado Truck Essay
The Chevrolet Colorado Provides Best In Class Performance and Comfort
The Chevrolet Colorado puts the power of a truck into the hands of those who are looking for
something lightweight, but with cargo and towing capacity. A full sized truck is not always the best
answer, especially when driveway or garage space is limited. The smaller midsize Colorado offers all
of the benefits of a truck without taking up the space of a full sized truck.
In 2004, General Motors introduced the Colorado as a replacement for their popular S10 trucks, and
the Colorado has proven to be just as popular. The 2016 diesel model is the proud recipient of the
2016 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award. The diesel is a new model option for 2016.
The Colorado offers power, performance and fuel efficiency. Its 2.8L turbo diesel engine sports 181 hp
and gives the truck the best in class towing capacity of 7,700 lbs, which makes it a good choice for
work or play. It is perfectly equipped to tow a boat or an equipment trailer. This model also delivers
the best in class fuel economy of 31 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg on the city streets. If you want
more power, the 3.6L DOHC V6 delivers 305 hp at 6,800 rpms with a rear axle ratio of 3.42. The V6

Compare And Contrast City Life And Country Life
City life vs. Country life People say home is where the heart is, but what is home? For some, home is
a place where they can sit on the front porch and drink sweet tea, while others see home as the place
where they were raised. For me, home is where I have the most cherished memories. After living in
the city and the country, I have come to the conclusion that life in the country is where my heart is.
My lifestyle in the country consisted of similarities and differences than what it did in the city. What
draws me more to country is the ability to enjoy the outdoor space, the quality time spent celebrating
with family and friends, and learning the important life skills of scheduling your responsibilities
wisely. There are a variety of activities you can do out in the country with ... Show more content on

There was a sufficient amount of room for everyone to fit comfortably without feeling crowded. While
the adults talked and spent time together, the children would run around outside, swim in the pool, and
play a variety of outdoor games. Parking during our celebrations was never an issue as there was
enough clearance to park and maneuver around each others vehicles without parking on the street. My
family and I didn t realize the advantages we had living on a significant amount of land until we
moved to the city. In our new home, when my friends would come over, we never ventured out of the
house like what we did in the country. Our yard was diminutive and if we did go outside, we had to be
in the front yard and watch out for traffic. We quickly realized it would be beneficial to stay indoors
and play cards, create challenges or find something productive to do inside. There is also an
alternative option of exploring the amenities the city has to offer since we had more flexibility in our

Voting Of The United States
Throughout the history of the United States, the right to vote is one of the most important privileges
and rights Americans have. Voting has always been very significant in America because many people
were not able to vote in the past. With movements, bills, and protests more and more people earned
the right to vote. America has come a long way in this democratic process. However, voting in the
21st century is not as important to people as it was in the past.
Low voter turnout in the United States is due to poor rules and regulations, demographics,
participation, and plenty more but it has the potential to be higher.
The best way to learn about why things happen is to look at the history of it. In the 18th century,
voting was only eligible for white male property owners over the age of 21 with a certain amount of
land. This land was then valued at a price and depending on that price the government would
determine if they were eligible to vote. Now as years went on Americans would not have to own a
certain amount of property. Instead, they would be eligible to vote if they showed they pay their taxes.
Native Americans, African Americans, and women could not vote due to religion, race, and mainly
because they were not seen as equals. Catholics were not able to vote in five of the 13 colonies and
Jews in four. As for poor men, they decided they should not be allowed to vote because they could be
tempted with bribes.

The Search for Enlightenment Essay
The Search for Enlightenment
Nature, I think we can deduce, refers not only to animals, plants, and mountains, but rather to the
universe as a whole the entirety of the physical universe ranging from human nature to quantum
nature while also including, plants, animals, and mountains as part of this greater whole. It has been
the search for knowledge and truths of the wonders and mysteries of nature, or rather the universe (in
other words science) that has, over the past few years been the underlying motivation in my life. Not
only do I find the search for knowledge exciting and intellectually stimulating, but I have found that
this motivation gives meaning or rather a direction to my life. I don t wish to imply that science and ...

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of science and one that I disagree with. Instead
my drive for competency has made science seem attractive, not because it tries to replace God and
metaphysical ideology, but rather that it explains the universe without having to rely on untestable
assumptions (which we can t know to be true) about how the universe should or would make sense to
be. As I believe that there is no God or transcendental explanation for life or the cosmos, I aspire to
understand human behavior, not in terms of metaphysical and transcendental explanations, but rather
in an empirical approach based on logic, reason, and the consiliecnce (Wilson 1998, p.8) of the
sciences and knowledge.
Yet, my innate desire for competence leads to another important motivation that affects my being, that
is the quest for authenticism. To be authentic, I refer to being original, honest about my thoughts to
myself and others; aware and skeptical of the motivation and assumptions of culture and society;
attempting to recognize and dissect assumptions of my creation and that of culture and societies; being
able to relate to others; and finally, being hyper conscious of myself. By hyper conscious, I refer to the
state of consciousness deeper than that of awareness of one s existence, that being the awareness of
one s motivations the constant introspection, thought, and questioning of one s actions and

The Phases And Development Of The Early Modern English Period
The Early Modern English phase (1500 1800) was followed after the Middle English Era. The Modern

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to prepare isoamyl acetate from isoamyl alcohol and glacial acetic
acid by Fischer esterification.
Introduction Esters are derivatives of carboxylic acids. Instead of having the COOH group, an ester
will include an alkoxy substituent which is a hydrocarbon group of some kind attached to the oxygen
molecule ( OR) (1, 2). Esters emit fruity smells and are widely used as flavor enhancers or fragrances.

Next, 0.809 g of isoamyl alcohol was added to the vial and weighed. The difference of these two
weights was recorded and considered the precise mass of the alcohol. A total of 2 mL of glacial acetic
acid was added to the vial. Three drops of concentrated H2SO4 and a boiling chip were added to the
vial. The vial was attached to a clamp and rested in a sand bath that ranged between 150 160°C. A
cold, damp kim wipe was placed around the tip of the vial to act as a condenser. The mixture was
refluxed for one hour. Once the hour passed, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and
the sand bath was turned off. After the boiling chip was removed from the vial, 1 mL of 5% sodium
hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) was slowly added to the reaction mixture, capped and swirled. The
vial was shaken to mix the contents and the cap was removed to release the pressure. This was
repeated until the bubbles were no longer produced. A Pasteur pipet was used to remove the aqueous
layer which was disposed in a test tube labeled Aqueous Layer . The extraction of the upper organic
layer was repeated two more times with new 1 mL portions of 5% NaHCO3, placing the aqueous layer

To say that African descended populations and cultures have been erased is not an unreasonable

How Does Alfred Hitchcock Use Cinematography In Veertigo
The director, Alfred Hitchcock, effectively uses cinematography elements, specifically those
pertaining to lighting, including color, contrast and shadows in the movie Vertigo to express emotions,
the aspect of time and most importantly to further his theme. With the major themes of the film being
life, love and death, the director uses the colors green and red to symbolize life, love and death
respectively, while additional colors such as blue is used to signify a change in time, specifically from
day to night time. Moreover, color is further used to portray emotions through the technique of
saturation to create warm colors signifying romance, whereas lighting techniques are similarly used in
the film, particularly contrast to and shadows to further describe the mood and emotions in the ...

Green as a symbol of life is used throughout the movie, beginning from the scene in the forest when
Madeleine points out to Scottie that the trees are the oldest living things and Scottie responds by
saying that they are evergreen and ever living (Blakesley 128). To further the theme of life, the
director therefore uses the color green throughout the film as it is scene in the colors of the plants, car
and the majority of the clothing worn in the movie. In addition to furthering the film s theme, colors
are further used to indicate the changes in time throughout the movie. For instance, in the opening
scene where Scottie s fellow police man falls to his death from the roof top after attempting to save
Scottie during a rooftop chase, darkness and the color blue dominates the screen to indicate that the
event took place during the night (Blakesley 118). The same color is used in night scenes throughout
the film to make it clear to the viewer the exact time of day that the events in the movie took

Theme Of Alienation In Brave New World
Brave New World is a novel written by Aldous Huxley which takes place in 2540 AD London and
depicts a utopian future, where humans are bred genetically and influenced from birth to serve.
Throughout the novel Huxley uses exile and alienation to express his feelings towards life in the so
called Brave New World . The Palestinian American literary theorist Edward Said has described exile
as strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift forced
between a human being and a native place, between self and its true home: its essential sadness can
never be surmounted. Said has also said that exile can become a potent, even enriching experience .
One of the characters who experiences such exile is John the Savage. John is in a tough place
throughout the book. When he is with the savages he is alienated due to his complexion and the fact
that his mother, Linda, is not liked due to her promiscuous acts with the men in the tribe. But when
John is brought back to society he is torn between conforming to society and staying true to his
beliefs. John is the only character who has a real birth mother and thus represents something unique
although frowned upon in society and therefore being different he is unable to fit into the savage
society. This becomes evident when he is denied the rites of passage and is unable to give his life
through ceremonies to the society. On page 136 John is ripped out of the ranks of the other boys and is

Improving Affordability Through Curbing Cost Increases
institutions rarely think of approaches toward this goal. According to the report published by Lumina
Foundation, Putting Colleges on Notice: Crafting Smarter Strategies to Improve Affordability through
Curbing Cost Increases, college leaders are either failing to pay attention, failing to prioritize, or
failing to act on the affordability issue (Fryar and Carlson, 2014, p.3). Current efforts to improve
affordability are halted by the insufficient attention and the lack of knowledge, evidence, and
thoughtful strategy regarding the role of institutional leaders (p.3). In a 2008 survey, the Iron Triangle:

Institutional leaders, as the entrepreneur for organization culture and value, their perception of the
conflict between cost and quality, and the quality first mindset will shape the organization culture and
influence institution s efforts toward affordability.
As discussed by Fryar (2014), if leaders perceive efforts to improve affordability as threats to the
quality of their institution, efforts toward promoting affordability will be halted. Furthermore,
prioritizing quality let college leaders seek for more stable and dependable financial sources. Tuition
and fees, as one of the controllable and dependable source, will be the first choice for institution to
maintain quality and avoid risk (Fryar, 2014). The dominant ideology that links price with quality in
higher education institutions, or in other words, quality is maintained on the base of accumulation of
tangible resources and the higher the price is, the better the education will be, is the root problem for
the ineffective institutional affordability movements.
Reducing Student Debt Burden Higher debt burden for students may increase their probability to

The Necessity of Evil and the Applications of Good in Response
By Trystan Heck
Throughout the history of the human race, many people have risen up above the rest to acquire a place
in history; either from actions that bring cheers to the mouths of men or whispers of dread and fear
instead. Those who deal with the side allying itself with the underworld of society strike, steal, and
injure people when it suits them; only stopping when the forces of good rally to fight against them.
Infamy is a cause for concern among the innocent and fearful, but without such people in the world,
humanity would not have any examples of what is considered wrong, and how to fix and prevent such

Fast Fashion Achieving Global Quick
Fast Fashion: Achieving Global Quick Response (GQR) in the Internationally Dispersed Clothing
Industry
Bart L. MacCarthy and P.G.S.A. Jayarathne
Abstract The clothing industry is one of the most mobile industries in the world. Global supply poses
significant challenges in ensuring the right volume and mix of products within retail stores. Here we
define a new concept Global quick response (GQR) which strives to combine the cost and scale
efficiencies arising from sourcing globally with quick and accurate response to market requirements.
GQR is based on lead time compression, effective information management, dynamic planning, and
strong logistics. We examine GQR in the context of the new garment development process, the initial

GQR strives to combine cost and scale efficiencies by sourcing globally with quick and accurate
response to specific market requirements. We examine how GQR affects the major operational
processes in clothing design, manufacture, and distribution. We discuss its requirements with respect
to market intelligence and rapid new product introduction; network planning and staged
postponement; and network capability. Different approaches to GQR are possible and two contrasting
examples are discussed briefly.

Horror Film Genre Essay
The two movies I viewed were Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, which were both directed
by Tobe Hopper. Both films displayed the general rules horror films generally follow through the use
of horror film genre conventions. For instance, both movies follow the good verses evil story lines and
in each the end does ultimately win. However, this is not entirely true in Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The friends represented the good and the chainsaw carrying monster and his family portrayed the evil.
In the end on of the friends, Sally, ultimately does escape from being killed by the monster in the
movie. However, her other four friends were taken down and gruesomely killed by the evil killer in
the movie. So although in a bittersweet manner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Poltergeist, the world of ghosts that jumps at the family is not one considered ordinary or one that
would have any sort of rationale behind it. Many would not believe such a thing to be true no matter if
they had a house built on top of a graveyard or not. Ghosts and the supernatural do not exist so this
showing up in a film brings a sense of irrational thought which would likely keep the audience of the
horror film guessing for they do not know what to expect. However, in Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
mostly due to the fact the film was based on a true story, there is a rational world where the events
taking place could be explained. An audience can believe that such a monster could exist because
there are crazy enough people in the world that could be ruthless murderers and cannibals. It is not
something that would be a pleasant thought even if it can be explained however rationale can be given
behind it which is not typical in horror films. In addition, although being in the dark about something
is more frightening Texas Chainsaw Massacre still did a good job of producing a scare in a rational
horror film by still keeping the element of surprise and suspense throughout the movie. The timing of
the appearance of the evil in each movie was just as similar to other movies, delayed. In Texas
Chainsaw Massacre, it takes up to half way through the movie for the chainsaw killer, Leatherface, to
appear and attack his first victim. In Poltergeist, the

Oppositional Defiant Disorder Analysis
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is one of the most prevailing and expensive mental health
problems for children and teen agers. Approximately 5% to 10% of 8 to 16 year olds present with
ODD behavior problems ( Erford,et al. 2013). Oppositional Defiant Disorder is part of the disruptive
behavior disorders (DBD) group, given this name because those who are diagnosed disrupt people in
their environment. According to the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry from 2013,
physicians define ODD as a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior directed toward
authority figures. Children and adolescents with ODD often rebel, are stubborn, argue with adults, and
refuse to obey. They have angry outbursts and have a hard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These patterns last for at least 6 months (APA, 2013). ODD has also been associated with excessive
arguing, cognitive and social deficits, and significant adult child and child peer interaction problems.
Youth with ODD demonstrate high rates of aggressive and antisocial behaviors, with a subset
displaying callousness and psychopathic traits, including a lack of guilt, empathy, and remorse. It is
important to note the difference between ODD and CD (conduct disorder). The defining characteristic
of oppositional defiant disorder is a fight against being controlled. For a child like this, being
controlled feels like drowning. CD is used to describe an older child or adolescent who has moved
into a pattern of violating the rights of others through intimidation or aggression. This could be against
people or animals, and include more serious violations such as theft and vandalism.. The DSM 5, a
diagnostic handbook used by mental health professionals, describes these individuals as having a
callous and unemotional interpersonal style. (Colins Andershed, 2015). These adolescents lack
empathy. Children with CD and callous unemotional (CU) traits present with patterns of persistent and
violent antisocial behaviour which include low empathy and guilt and shallow affect. Currently, CU is
considered a subtype for conduct disorder, according to the

Quiznos s biggest threat is that it competes with Subway s $5 foot long, Subway is successful due to
how it advertises itself also.(QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos competitive advantage is that it has way more
variety, from the sizes of their subs, to various different options and way zestier ingredients. As far as
market share they are a competitor in the fast food market. Their market share is very small compared
to Subway. Quiznos saw a fall in market share of over 50% which was from 5,000 to now only 2,100
stores. (QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos is now behind Subway the leader and Jimmy Johns at second. Subway
has over 40,000 stores globally so there is no comparison. (QSRweb, n.d) Quiznos did not only
struggle with Subway as far as pricing globally but also with the Jared campaign of 2000 that focused
on healthier foods pleasing the average consumer who are health conscious.
There is an increase in overall market share of the sandwich segment globally as it is said that
consumers are purchasing sandwiches away from home versus making them and taking them from

Thus, the US government had the time to cultivate a plan to remove him from power that was
agreeable to all involved. One must examine the fine points of each argument that the administration
had proposed for the immediacy of war in order to best refute them. The first and often most repeated
argument that Saddam Hussein posed a direct threat to the United States is that he possessed weapons
of mass destruction. I am willing to concede that the Iraqi military possessed both chemical and
biological agents. Saddam Hussein had stockpiles of them that were never accounted for after the first
Gulf War. He has even used them on several occasions on Kurdish minorities in Northern Iraq.
However, no proof was ever offered that he possessed nuclear weapons or the means to develop them
in the near future.
Chemical and biological agents can certainly inflict devastating damage on a country s population.
However, what is the likelihood the Saddam Hussein would have used them on the United States or
even our allies in the region? Recent history demonstrates that it was not very likely. Up until the first
Gulf War, Iraq was an ally, in some sense of the word, of the United States. The US government
supported Saddam Hussein in his battle with Iran because we opposed the Shi a fundamentalists in
Tehran. We gave Hussein, through American contractors, many of the chemical agents we

  • 2. Diversity In California This week s topic of California becoming such a diverse powerhouse in the U.S and also how California being such a diverse state plays an important role in the U.S. government . California is a hybrid democracy which means there are two types of democracies within California s government. Representative means that we elect of political officials that best represents our interests. This also happens on a federal level which is why we have various elections throughout the years that allows us to vote for who we want in Congress, also on who we want to be our president. Direct Democracy gives power to the people in California allowing us to have a voice in how we want to see our state government run California (The Basics, 3:33). These two democracies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... California citizens consist of 39% Latino, 38.8 White, 5.8% Black, 13.0% Asian, and less than 1% Native American (Lecture 2, California Diversity). It is stated that according to California Governor Jerry Brown s new state budget, Latinos are projected to become the largest single racial/ethnic group in the state by March of 2014 (Hugo Lopez, Mark. 2014). The large increase in the Latino population over recent years has become such a huge media topic in today s news because people think that America s immigration policy and laws are too loose and are allowing people to cross the border illegally. Our current president Donald Trump believes that our immigration laws are horrible and allows criminals to cross the border into the U.S. which is making Americans lose jobs and cause crime rates to rise. He stated various time that he wants to make laws that would prohibit such people from coming over to America. This isn t the first time that diversity has affected policies that the government has made. An example of this would be Proposition 187, the Save our State initiative. This initiative banned public services such as education and emergency care to undocumented peoples in California (Lecture 2, California ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zoe s brother, Jason, perfectly summarized the two when he described Zoe as serious and pessimistic and Danielle as one who sees the glass half full. Their appearances also balance each other out, as Jason pictured Danielle as vivacious, with bright red curls, whereas Zoe is dark, but with eyes as bright as the ocean. When Jason described the two girls, he illustrated that even though both their looks and personalities are completely opposite, these yin and yang qualities are what bonded them together and created their mile deep friendship. • 4. Fto Program Field training officer (FTO) programs were created so that agencies could better manage the post academy training for officers that traditionally were not hired into this field of work (Doerner, 2012). The good old boy program was out, and the implementation of a structured, standardized FTO program became the replacement (Doerner, 2012). In order to implement a FTO program, it must be defined so that the overall objectives are met. The San Jose Police Department was the first to initiate an FTO program. With some slight changes, this system is typically the one in use today (Doerner, 2012). The FTO program is a set period of time broken down into phases where each phase allows the rookie officer more and more responsibilities (Doerner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Studies in the 80 s have shown that a greater percentage of blacks and females could not successfully complete the FTO program compared to white male officers (Doerner, 2012). If this was based on unfairly treating blacks and females during the training, then the concern is that racism exists and much time and money has been wasted getting the rookie officers to this point (Doerner, 2012). This would also have a negative impact on any affirmative action efforts. However, Doerner conducted an extensive study in 1989 of over 300,000 ratings and concluded that white FTO s did not unfairly treat black rookies and male FTO s did not unfairly use different standards for female rookie officers (Doerner, 2012). Further investigation discovered that blacks struggled in passing radio use, legal knowledge, and report writing, which was surprising as they were required to have a 2 year college degree (Doerner, 2012). Changes to the demographic unbalancing of FTO instructors, lengths of phases being increased, and lessening the expectations of the program all were implemented to overcome the concerns of affirmative actions and barriers (Doerner, ... • 5. Chinese Foreign Policy And Its Effect On The Regional... The general consensus among scholars concludes that China is assertive (Chen, Pu Johnston, 2014, 176). The assertive conduct of China can have an impact on the regional order and stability in South China Sea. The scholars have different views on the assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy (Chen et al., 2014, 176). The argument in favour of implementing assertive foreign policy affirms that China has good intentions regarding the South China Sea (Chen et al., 2014, 181). China is required to have an assertive conduct because a moderate approach would not bring regional stability (Fangyin, 2016, 877). The opposing argument on assertive foreign policy is concerned with the aggressive and provocative behaviour of China (Chen et al., 2014, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... China holds historic rights to the South China Sea through its nine dash line in most of the contested waterways in the region where it can extract resources (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 77 78). The maritime claims and sovereign claims of China in the South China Sea through the nine dash line must comply with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China had historic rights to the South China Sea through the nine dash line until it ratified the UNCLOS in 1996 (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China is bound to follow the international law to defend its sovereign rights despite the tribunal in the Hague ruling in favour of the Philippines (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 81). The ruling of the tribunal in The Hague was hard on China (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). The arbitrary decision of the tribunal has brought China to a legal crossroads (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 82). The ruling has placed limitations to the maritime claims of China in the South China Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). The maritime claims of China to water and airspace in the South China Sea was declared invalid under international law (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 76). China cannot legally continue to declare military zones in the water or airspace around the reefs it occupies, nor can it do so more than 12 nautical miles from the rocks it controls (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). • 6. Analysis Of The Movie The Bedroom With Fill The Gaps... In 1979, Dubus creates an alternate world, where he propels readers through the emotional whirlpool spinning in the mind of Matt Fowler, a man who is trying to cope with the tragic murder of his son; as the tide, acting through his wife, becomes increasingly overwhelming, Matt is driven to seek revenge through the killing of Richard Fowler (Dubus 1123 1136). Years later, in 2001, director Todd Field produces the film adaptation In the Bedroom to fill the gaps Dubus s short story cannot; while the story focuses more on the killings themselves, Field allows views to understand the emotional turmoil that pushes characters to the edge, ultimately explaining the journey of how the killings come to be (In the Bedroom). One can see the veil depression places Ruth after Frank s death, enabling her to ask Matt for the literal unspeakable task of murder; in a short story, one cannot read silence, but the silence permeating the film speaks louder than the Dubus s words. While in neither the film nor short story does Ruth outwardly express her desire for the death of Richard, within the film, one is able to glimpse into the inner workings of Matt s mind, understanding the emotional manipulation, brought on by his wife, he endures. Matt describes how Ruth has concrete objections which he trie[s] to overcome and in his intent to do this[,] he neglect[s] his own objects (1127); here, Dubus is indirectly telling readers this is the foundation Ruth has previously built in her marriage, allowing her to manipulate Matt into carrying out tasks, or specifically it (1136). Furthermore, several times in the short story, Matt convinces himself that he [is] certain that [Ruth knows and] she [is] waiting for him for she knows (Dubus 1125, 1134). • 11. Compare And Contrast City Life And Country Life City life vs. Country life People say home is where the heart is, but what is home? For some, home is a place where they can sit on the front porch and drink sweet tea, while others see home as the place where they were raised. For me, home is where I have the most cherished memories. After living in the city and the country, I have come to the conclusion that life in the country is where my heart is. My lifestyle in the country consisted of similarities and differences than what it did in the city. • 12. Voting Of The United States Throughout the history of the United States, the right to vote is one of the most important privileges and rights Americans have. Voting has always been very significant in America because many people were not able to vote in the past. With movements, bills, and protests more and more people earned the right to vote. America has come a long way in this democratic process. However, voting in the 21st century is not as important to people as it was in the past. Low voter turnout in the United States is due to poor rules and regulations, demographics, participation, and plenty more but it has the potential to be higher. The best way to learn about why things happen is to look at the history of it. In the 18th century, voting was only eligible for white male property owners over the age of 21 with a certain amount of land. This land was then valued at a price and depending on that price the government would determine if they were eligible to vote. Now as years went on Americans would not have to own a certain amount of property. Instead, they would be eligible to vote if they showed they pay their taxes. Native Americans, African Americans, and women could not vote due to religion, race, and mainly because they were not seen as equals. Catholics were not able to vote in five of the 13 colonies and Jews in four. As for poor men, they decided they should not be allowed to vote because they could be tempted with bribes. The Search for Enlightenment Essay The Search for Enlightenment Nature, I think we can deduce, refers not only to animals, plants, and mountains, but rather to the universe as a whole the entirety of the physical universe ranging from human nature to quantum nature while also including, plants, animals, and mountains as part of this greater whole. It has been the search for knowledge and truths of the wonders and mysteries of nature, or rather the universe (in other words science) that has, over the past few years been the underlying motivation in my life. Not only do I find the search for knowledge exciting and intellectually stimulating, but I have found that this motivation gives meaning or rather a direction to my life. I don t wish to imply that science and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of science and one that I disagree with. Instead my drive for competency has made science seem attractive, not because it tries to replace God and metaphysical ideology, but rather that it explains the universe without having to rely on untestable assumptions (which we can t know to be true) about how the universe should or would make sense to be. As I believe that there is no God or transcendental explanation for life or the cosmos, I aspire to understand human behavior, not in terms of metaphysical and transcendental explanations, but rather in an empirical approach based on logic, reason, and the consiliecnce (Wilson 1998, p.8) of the sciences and knowledge. Yet, my innate desire for competence leads to another important motivation that affects my being, that is the quest for authenticism. To be authentic, I refer to being original, honest about my thoughts to myself and others; aware and skeptical of the motivation and assumptions of culture and society; attempting to recognize and dissect assumptions of my creation and that of culture and societies; being able to relate to others; and finally, being hyper conscious of myself. By hyper conscious, I refer to the state of consciousness deeper than that of awareness of one s existence, that being the awareness of one s motivations the constant introspection, thought, and questioning of one s actions and ... The Modern English phase is sub divided into the early and late phases. The Late Mordern English phase is followed by the Modern English phase. By the end of the Middle English Era, the great vowel shift had begun. Events that took place during this era helped in shaping the English language the way it is today. Theme Of Alienation In Brave New World Brave New World is a novel written by Aldous Huxley which takes place in 2540 AD London and depicts a utopian future, where humans are bred genetically and influenced from birth to serve. Throughout the novel Huxley uses exile and alienation to express his feelings towards life in the so called Brave New World . The Palestinian American literary theorist Edward Said has described exile as strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place, between self and its true home: its essential sadness can never be surmounted. Said has also said that exile can become a potent, even enriching experience . One of the characters who experiences such exile is John the Savage. John is in a tough place throughout the book. When he is with the savages he is alienated due to his complexion and the fact that his mother, Linda, is not liked due to her promiscuous acts with the men in the tribe. But when John is brought back to society he is torn between conforming to society and staying true to his beliefs. John is the only character who has a real birth mother and thus represents something unique although frowned upon in society and therefore being different he is unable to fit into the savage society. This becomes evident when he is denied the rites of passage and is unable to give his life through ceremonies to the society. On page 136 John is ripped out of the ranks of the other boys and is ... However, in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, mostly due to the fact the film was based on a true story, there is a rational world where the events taking place could be explained.
