Mistakes Made By Learners As A Result Of Carelessness
Hansen (2006) explains errors as mistakes made by learners as a result of carelessness,
misinterpretation of symbols and texts, lack of relevant experience or knowledge related to a
Mathematical topic . From her research she found that misconceptions, eventually led to errors.
Drews (2005) defines misconceptions as the misapplication of a rule, an overgeneralization or under
generalization or an alternative conception of the situation . Misunderstandings are the result of a
failure to grasp what was being taught; therefore reinforcement of the correct method needs to be
issued.
Errors, misconceptions and misunderstandings are all found within the classroom and are
customary for children to use within their work. Vygotsky (1962) states that children think and
learn socially through experience, interaction and support (Smith et al, 2003). The activities enable
children to experiment, make decisions, errors and correct themselves (Bruce, 2005). As a teacher it
is crucial to identify the misconstrued knowledge/concepts and the underlying problems in the most
accurate way. It is through discussion with the child, their ideas and perceptions, that the true
reasons for the misconceptions become evident.
The National Numeracy Strategy (DfE, 1999) requires teachers to identify mistakes, using them as
positive teaching points by talking about them and any misconceptions that led to them . Children
regularly make errors, misconceptions and misunderstandings in Mathematics,

Abolishing Death Penalty
The future of the death penalty lies unclear in the cross country battle over whether or not it should
be abolished. The death penalty should in fact be abolished because of the extreme costs and
painful time involved to house and execute inmates, the indecision of which method of execution is
the most humane, and the increasing number of innocent inmates being wrongfully executed.
The number of death sentences peaked at about 315 in 1996, but last year dropped to only 73. In
addition, the number of prisoners on death row dropped 17% from 3,593 in 2000, to 3,000 in
2015(Wolf and Johnson 1). Despite this rapid decline in the amount of death sentences and
prisoners awaiting execution, 31 states still retain the death penalty, with only seven ... Show more

is that no states are seeking to reinforce the death penalty. For example, California houses 25% of
the nation s 3,000 death row prisoners and the $137 million dollars the state spends on maintaining
capital punishment has led to the states disliking. One aspect of capital punishment that has
displeased average American citizens is all the attention on death row prisoners, making rock stars
out of killers. Many believe the money and attention should be spent on more serious issues like
disease or poverty or even on the struggling families of the victims. However, the crime rate jumped
122% from 1963 to 1980, and maybe that is why capital punishment is needed. The fear of being
executed will diminish the amount of murders and crimes in the country, and that if we protect
guilty lives then innocent lives will be given up in exchange. But by reinforcing the death
penalty, innocents could be wrongly executed. Take for example Anthony Ray Hinton. Hinton
spent 30 years on Alabama s death row after being convicted for two murders at age 29. But due
to a defense lawyer s mistakes in 1985, he was granted a new hearing and was found innocent.
After being freed he said, I spent 30 years on death row for something I didn t do. This supports
my argument in that if all this time and money is spent on protecting the death penalty to come to a
clear verdict, than there should never be a wrong conviction. The risk of wrongful convictions is
greater if the

Frankie Avalon Research Paper
It s a good chance that you ll quickly recall the name and talents of singer, actor Frankie Avalon, no
matter your age. Frankie s stellar career embraced three generations of music, television and motion
pictures and was an intrinsic fiber of American entertainment history. Frankie Avalon was born
September 18, 1940 in The City of Brotherly Love , Philadelphia, PA. He could light the flame and
turn up the heat on nearly every love struck teen girl or adult woman in America! A child prodigy,
Frankie entered local amateur talent contests after he turned 10 and won them, one after another. In
the years that ensued, he continued his musical studies and learning trumpet from a member of the
Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. This truly genuine young talent soon made guest appearances as
a trumpet player on The Perry Como and Jackie Gleason Television Shows.... Show more content on

His music was synonymous to the times. Among some of his hit sounds were Venus , a song
written by Ed Marshall and Peter DeAngelis. The most successful version was by Frankie and
released in 1959. This song would become Avalon s first number one hit on the Billboard Hot
100 chart and it spent five weeks atop the survey. The song also reached number ten on the R B
chart and was a man s plea to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, to send him a girl to
love and one who will love him. Another of Frankie Avalon s best known songs was Why .
Recorded in 1959, the song went to Number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart for
the week of December 28, 1959, and the last Number 1 single of the 1950s. The song was written

The Exciting yet Stressful Career of Computer Programming
How could you be reading this paper right now without programs like Windows and Word that this
document was made on? Technology is a fundamental part of our everyday lives, meaning the
people who program computers have significant jobs. Although it is essential that computers are
built from scratch, people are needed to transform these computers from complex machines that
users need a college diploma to the user friendly interfaces we see today. In order to become and
remain a computerprogrammer, a student could go to college and obtain a degree or self teach
himself.
Computer programming is a difficult yet rewarding career. Programmers use different
programming languages in their day to day lives; similar to foreign languages they are similar in
some ways but different in others. Three languages commonly used by computer programmers
are Visual Basic, C++, and Java ( Major: Computer Programming, General ). Other languages
include SQL, HTML, and .NET (Juliano, Jim). Programming can even be done as a hobby
instead of a career (Reeves and Kent). People can release their work as open source software;
many of these open source software such as Apache HTTPD, WordPress, and PHP run millions
of websites across the world. Programming is a love it or hate it occupation (Reeves and Kent). A
programmer has to have passion for programming in order to be successful; one cannot simply
choose programming as a job unless they truly enjoy it. Programmers enjoy their jobs because

Jim Jones Genocide in Jonestown, Guyana
Never Forget is the slogan for such atrocities as The Holocaust, The September 11th attacks and
all Genocide worldwide in a way to remember and prevent future events. Little did we know that
in Jonestown, Guyana, a holocaust like killing would take place Saturday November 18th 1976.
That date will be a day many will Never Forget. Jim Joneswas a religious fanatic who started The
Peoples Church. He preached socialistic views and lies to gain followers. With increasing paranoia
he moved to Guyanawith a thousand followers , most would never leave Jonestownagain, but to be

At days end on November 18, 1976, Jonestown was left lifeless. Jones watched as all of his
followers (forced or under free will) drink the poisoned Kool Aid as he commanded. Yet he did
not receive the same way out, he was too cowardly and proud to take his own life, Jones was
killed by one of his followers with a single gunshot to the back of the head (Jim Jones 2014). He
died that day with his followers, with no punishment. The families of members of the cult will
never have closure, no justice for those who had been killed. The biggest misconception about
Jonestown is that it was a mass suicide, when in reality it was a mass murder, said a reporter that
survived the shooting. Reverend Jim Jones had no punishment, he instead had himself killed.
One thousand members were held imprisoned, 913 people killed, 270 of which are innocent
children (Jim Jones Bio). Jim Jones was never punished for his crime, not to say he did not
deserve to die, but Jones was never caught. With only a gunshot wound to the head, Jones died
with his followers that day because it was his choice to die( Jonestown: Nightmare in Paradise).
No doubt Jim Jones has a special place in hell for his crimes against humanity, he should have to

Research Paper On Haiti Earthquake
Haiti Earthquake
Have you ever heard of an earthquake so big that hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives,
more than three hundred thousand people were injured, and 1.5 million people became homeless?
If not, let me introduce you to the Haiti Earthquake. This enormous earthquake destroyed many
lives. It was believed to have been caused by the shifting of tectonic plates in the Earth. But, is this
the truth?
In 2010, an earthquake broke out in Haiti. The city was left in ruins, 1.5 million people lost their
homes, and hundreds of thousands of people were either killed or injured. Scientists claim that the
cause of this earthquake was because of slippage along the conservative plate boundary that runs
through Haiti. But, some conspiracy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But, conspiracy theorists think HAARP s purpose is far more sinister than meets the eye, says
Stephanie Pappas, reporter for NBC news. HAARP is believed to use their resources for
weather warfare, which also plays into the role of the thought of HAARP causing the earthquake
in Haiti. Some reasoning that causes this theory is as follows: Just a few hundred miles away
from Haiti is a HAARP array; The earthquake did not occur on a big fault line. This earthquake
happened quite farther south of the North American plate and Caribbean plate. It is rare that a
quake is to occur here, which makes room for conspiracies that HAARP caused it. These are just
two of the many reasons that stem from HAARP s involvement with the Haiti Earthquake.
So how did HAARP cause the earthquake? HAARP has heaters in the Ionosphere. From these
heaters comes ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) waves. These waves are powerful enough, at the
right frequency, to cause vibrations in the Earth, which can lead to an earthquake. One reason as to
why HAARP would want to cause an earthquake is because of the idea that Haiti is an unguarded,
unwanted, low protection country that could make a good place to test an earthquake. It also seems
odd that, since this earthquake was deep in Earth s surface, it only affected

Descriptive Essay On Being A Waitress
It s always nice to go out to eat, order a nice meal that you do not have to cook and be served
everything you want. When going out to eat, have you ever thought about the person that is
serving you food, getting you drinks, and making sure you have a pleasant experience at the
restaurant of your choice? That person is a server. He or she is a waiter or waitress. I ve gone out
to eat a lot, and I ve always been a little curious what is like to be the person serving the food and
not eatingit. I chose to research this subculture because I was so curious about it. I have some
friends that wait tables, but I hadn t really thought about how being a waitress involves so many
things aside from serving food. Waitressing is more about handling all different types of people,
and learning to multitask successfully than just serving food. When I go out to eat, I usually
only notice if the waitress or waiter is nice to me and my party. I make sure that all of the food
and drinks come out the way we ordered them, and I also pay attention to how the food tastes.
When I started my research and observation for this ethnography, I started to pay more attention
the server when I was eating at restaurants. I started to notice how many tables the server waited
on, I noticed how many times he or she had to take food back to the kitchen because someone
thought it was wrong or not cooked right, and I also noticed how unhappy he or she was when
they left a certain table. I have also

Social Norms In The Adventures Of Peregrine Pickle
In the excerpt from The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle , Smollett does an excellent job conveying
the social norms of 1751. The passage is driven by mockery and disrespect, yet neither man will let
the tension ruin their reputation. While both men show signs of anger and disrespect, neither one
directly insults the other. As Pickle is confronted about the nature of his and Emilia, he becomes
angry. Yet, Gauntlet had no intentions of offending him. As their conversation continues, the
tensions rise and both men start to let their emotions control them. The tone of the passage
changes immediately from curiosity, to anger, as Gauntlet expresses to Pickle I should know the
nature of it , this is where everything starts to build. Gauntlet s tone throughout the passage is
almost one of irritation, he seems as if he is irritated by the way Pickle responded to him. Pickle
immediately comes off snooty and arrogant as if he owes nothing to Gauntlet. The narrator remains
calm and relaxed throughout and does not seem surprised when Gauntlet challenges Pickle to a
sword fight to settle their dispute. Social norms of the 1950 s was displayed well by the way there
narrator kept their calm tone throughout the fight, making it clear that behavior as such was... Show

Smolletts use of dialogue shows the initial emotions shared between Gauntlet and Pickle. Hatred
and disrespect is perceived from their interactions. Pickle feels as if Gauntlet has no place to ask
about his relationship with Emilia. The use of the word sir is used by both men, not as a sign of
respect but as a sign of anger and dominance. As the two continue, the dialogue becomes ironic and
near mockery, when they use the term gentlemen , well knowing that they were not showing any
respect. Gauntlet had finally had enough when he exclaimed, I dare do anything , showing that he

Analysis Of The Joy Of Secrecy
I
The Joy of Secrecy
Dear reader, I ask you to accompany me on a journey through the mind of a great creator. Not the
Great Creator, mind you, but only one, and that one is myself. Many would consider me to be a
rash man, one of immense skill but little actual talent, one who believes more intensely than
rational thought may permit. And in that sense, they consider me to be a dreamer. But what a
perfect profession I have found! It is the most acceptable profession for a dreamer to have, in my
honest opinion, for what other type of work allows one to make his dreams a reality? Truly,
animation is the one true profession for dreamers, the most accepting line of work for such strong
and skilled personalities. I, myself, find that life is merely a composition of brush strokes and
feathered lines sketched by a hand careless in its execution. A hand that may erect and raze as it
wishes, or, in such cases as my own, as it is commanded by an even higher power than that which
wills life from vacuous space.
Among my company my associates, if you will, or if you will not, my coworkers I alone dare to
dream of the unreality of life, dare to reject the hand that abides by no mortal law or rule of
happiness. My lines do more than animate ink and paper in a sort of strange necromancy. From
my own hand I bestow life upon flat bodies, make them twist and turn and sing the body electric . I
am a special sort of man, a unique form of animator, one who dreams more than most, often more

The Malleus Maleficarum, By Dominican Inquisitors Heinrich...
The Malleus Maleficarum, published in 1487 and authored by Dominican Inquisitors Heinrich
Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, was used by Catholics and Protestants as a bank of knowledge on
how to locate and prosecute witches. Though the text was published in 1487, it was still used as
the premier text on witches well into the 18th century. The text is incredibly thorough, covering
the topics of witch identification, explanations of how witches make their pacts with the devil,
and how to effectively conduct a trial. This text was written to be read by upper class members
of the clergy and secular governments. The audience of this text largely informed the language
and content which Kramer and Sprenger used and included. Because of the very clear and
directed audience who was intended to read this text, the authors got away with rhetoric which
would not necessarily be believed or agreed with by the laypeople who would actually be affected
by the contents of The Malleus Maleficarum. The Malleus Maleficarum is explicitly misogynistic
when addressing who can be a witch, when describing the pact that a woman makes with the
devil, and the process by which an accused witch is questioned and tried. The Malleus
Maleficarum is very explicit about which gender is more likely to practice witchcraft. Multiple
sections of the texts specifically reference the fact that women are more likely to be witches, and
gives details about why women are more likely to be coerced into witchcraft by the

Manifest Destiny Dbq
Manifest destiny was the idea that the citizens of the United States had a God given right to extend
their way of life from the Atlantic to the Pacific and that no physical barrier or human force could
stop the settlement of these lands. This idea became a prevalent thought in the minds of many
United States citizens. The expansion into new territories across the continent was a direct link in
the chain of events leading to the Civil War. Each time new territory was acquired by the United
States, the troublesome question of slavery was raised. Many people in the anti slavery faction of
the North and West persisted in thinking that slavery in the territories would result in the economic

In the years preceding the war, a new wave of immigrants came to the United States fleeing the

The Importance Of Compulsory Voting
The current day politicians are worried about the number of the voters turn out for the federal
elections. With 2008 being the lowest in the past 30 years this probably causing debates about
having compulsory voting in canada to increase voter turnout. As the results show from countries
that enforce compulsory votingthat it dramatically increase voter turnout. Is the increased voter
turnout worth the price of the loss of the right of liberty? Why should the government implement a
law to increase voter turn out that could easily be increased without mandatory voter turnout, and it
will cause an unequal representation of voters, and a loss of rights and freedoms.

people don t vote. According to stats canada the second main reason why people don t vote is

The Fiercest Rivalry In College Football In Birmingham,...
The Origins of the fiercest rivalry in all of college football began in Birmingham, Alabama in 1893.
At the time, Birmingham was known for its iron production, hence the college match up was
named the Iron Bowl, which comes from Birmingham s historic role in the steel industry. The teams
met in Birmingham s Lakeview Park, with Auburn (then the Agricultural and Mechanical Collegeof
Alabama) winning 32 22. Both schools, Alabama and Auburn launched footballprograms in 1892,
Alabama considers this game to be the final one of that season, while Auburn considers it to be the

Life And Death In Donald Barthelme s The School
Donald Barthelme s story, The School, takes on an untraditional way of explaining life and the
meaning behind it. Donald Barthelme was an influential writer during the mid 1900 s and was an
especially important part of flash fiction. Many of his stories were very short. His approach at
writing enabled him to highlight his themes in an unusual way. He uses escalation to emphasize the
deaths of plants and herbs going all the way to the deathof people. Michael Byers, an assistant
professor of English at the University of Michigan, writes about The School saying, curiosity,
love, personal connection all sources of solace in the face of death, and once that solace arrives,
the dead world returns to life (Byers). I agree with Byers that these things are sources of solace;
however, I do not think Barthelme was trying to imply that after death we return to life. I believe
Barthelme was trying to emphasize the meaning of lifewhen answering the children s question by
saying, life is that which gives meaning to life. He was saying that death is a natural part of human
life which exists all around us. Barthelme emphasized his theme of life by using the escalation of
death throughout the story. I think Barthelme wanted readers to see that life and death are the basis
for existence and that one cannot exist without the other; humor through escalation is brought into
effect to create the harsh contrast of life versus death. As well as using humor and escalation to

What Is The Theme Of The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman is told from the perspective of an obedient wife, who
is denied adequate treatment of her serious mental illness. An issue that Gilman knew from her
own nervous breakdown and ineffective treatment she was given. This story is considered her
greatest piece of fiction because of its horrifying depictions and its bleak outlook (Great American
Stories 81). After it was first published in 1892, many interpreted the story only as a horror tale,
but year s later critics have attached many themes and symbolism to the short story. In The Yellow
Wallpaper, Charlotte Gilman uses a descriptive first person point of view to not only immerse
readers into the deranged mind of her horrified character, but to also... Show more content on

While she never had hallucinations, Gilman did suffer from mental illness and depression for
three years when she underwent a rest cure prescribed by a neurologist. She reflected on many
of her personal experiences of isolation and paranoia to create a deranged yet believable
character. The terrifying character caused an outrage of one Boston physician, in an article in her
Magazine The Forerunner, Gilman remembered his reaction: Such a story ought not to be written,
he said: it was enough to drive anyone mad to read it (Great American Stories 81). While Gilman
did face her critics, she was proud to learn that her story had helped one woman. Gilman wrote
about how the woman s family realized that she needed normal activity to help her recover from
her nervous breakdown. It was not intended to drive people crazy, she remarked on her story, but
to save people from being driven crazy, and it worked (Great American Stories 81). The Yellow
Wallpaper has greatly impacted American literature and is regarded today as a true classic. Many
of the themes such as female oppression and poor treatment of the mentally ill are issues that are
common today. Gilman brought to life a character that became as deranged and insane as the
conventional society that she was apart

The Music And Arts Program
On Monday, April 18, 2016, I observed a School Board Meeting at Chenango Valley School
District at 7:00 PM. The room was congested with a numerous amount of people that varied in age.
The board members that were present were: Mr. David P. Gill, Superintendent, Mrs. Elizabeth
Dicosimo, Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Stuart Elliott, President, Mr. Joel Luchun, Vice President,
Mr. Jason Aurelio, Mr. Steve Carr, Mr. John P. Hussar, Mrs. Christine Lomonaco, Mrs. Michelle
Porterfield Wilson, Mrs. Kelly Warwick, Mrs. Susan Cirba, District Clerk, and Mrs. Elizabeth
Donahue, Business Executive. The main topics that were discussed were the music and arts
program being cut in half, updated information on the schooldistricts from principals, and the
French Exchange Program. During my observation, I noticed that the board members were not
very responsive. At first, the environment was very uncomfortable and the meeting felt very
unorganized. As the meeting continued and others took over, the meeting became friendlier and
more welcoming. When the public was speaking on behalf of the music program at the school,
the board members were not allowed to respond to what was being addressed. Mr. Elliott opened
the floor to the public to comment and address any concerns or issues. During this time, he read
everything off of a script and had a very rude tone when speaking. Once parents and students
expressed their concern of cutting the music and arts program, Mr. Elliott seemed very annoyed and

The Age of Imperialism
During the period of 1850 until about 1910 there was an age of Imperialism. Imperialism is the
policy of extending a nation s political and economic dominance or control over another territory or
country. Imperialism was important to the political power of many nations for the Eastern and
Western. It added wealth, status and increased their military strength. With the strength of their
military they are able to maintain their authority all over the world by using their colonies as supply
bases and fortifications. Many people in the Western countries believed that their civilization was
superior to that of the non Western peoples. Westerners wanted to bring benefits of their culture to
others. They also wanted to teach non Christians about Christianity. For many Europeans and North
Americans, such goals helped to defend imperialism. I am studying imperialism of Great Britain
how they took control over Chinaand the United States; how they took control over the Caribbean
Islands and Philippines. Prior to their controls, I am studying how their motivations are the similar
and differ from one another from their commerce and their government policy. In the early 1800 s,
Great Britain had more colonies than any other Western nation. It controlled Canada, part of India,
Australia, New Zealand, British Honduras; known to us today as Belize, in Central America, British
Guiana; now known as Guyana in South Africa, and other islands in the Caribbean. Much of the

Contemporary Stressors of Adolescence
Contemporary stressors Adolescent stress is an important part of their lives and it is important for
it to be monitored regularly in order for them to feel the benefit of learning important stress
management skills. About 39% of the adolescents undergo depression at one point or another and
they seem to handle their problems in a way that is constructive. This stress and depression ranges
from mild to severe with the young people often relying on negative or passive behaviors in their
attempts to deal effectively with their problems. Stress is usually characterized by frustration,
sadness, worry, tension and withdrawal. There are many reasons that lead to stress in adolescents
and younger people. Various studies have been conducted to determine the causes of stress among
adolescents. The A study that was conducted in the state of Minnesota provided information about
the prevalence of stress and depression in adolescents. It was found that one of the stressful events

Sight And Blindness In Oedipus The King
Pushed to the last breaking point, Teiresias finally reveals the truth that the audience has been
waiting for. However, instead of the anticipated cathartic climax to release the accumulated
dramatic tension and irony from Oedipus s misguided pursuit of the truth, the play bombards the
audience with still more tension and tragic irony in an emotional roller coaster as Oedipusand
Iocaste attempts to run away from their inevitable fate. Oedipus refuses to believe the truth

The Stability of an interconnected power systemSmall...
The stability of an interconnected power system is the ability of the system to return to its normal
or stable condition after having been subjected to some form of disturbance. With the
interconnected systems continually increasing in size and extending over whole geographical
regions, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to maintain synchronism between various parts
of the power system. This paper work presents an advanced adaptive Particle swarm optimization
technique to optimize the SVC controller parameters for enhancement of the steady state stability
overcoming the premature convergence stagnation problems as in basic PSO algorithm Particle
swarm optimizationwith shrinkage factor inertia weight approach (PSO SFIWA). In this paper
SMIB system along with PID damped SVC controller is considered for study. The generator
speed deviation is used as an auxiliary signal to SVC, to generate the desired damping. This
controller improves the dynamic performance of power system by reducing the steady state error.
The controller parameters are optimized using basic PSO, PSO SFIWA Advanced Adaptive PSO.
Computational results show that Advanced Adaptive based SVC controller is able to find better
quality solution as compare to conventional PSO PSO SFIWA Techniques.

Individual Employees Should Be Protected From Penalties

Individual employees should be protected from penalties with regard to sensitive data that has
been compromised/released. Since a majority of security breaches result from corporate culture,
malicious attacks, or glitches in the system, employees should be protected from misdirected
penalization. Such breaches may also stem from improper training of computer illiterate
employees. With the many factors involved in a data breach, a company will benefit more from

one just as likely to make such mistakes.

laws and regulations are still being developed for IT security.

Brokeback Mountain and the Western Genre Essay
The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns
that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and
icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is
different from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and
conventional Westernfilm at all. Brokeback Mountainhas several different twists to it, like the more
modern take on it traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because

Brokeback Mountain, being the more homosexual romance oriented Western that it is, subverts a
large number of the typical traditional elements of the Western film genreas a whole, this one
especially, by having another male be in the position of the love interest of the hero. Although
this subversion in particular is very problematic for Jack, as it puts him in the shoes of being
associated with all things relating to femininity in the relationship. For example, Jack is the one
who makes the first move when seducing Ennis, using his own allure and sexuality into
tempting Ennis when he calls him into the tent, leading Ennis down somewhat of a risky path.
Ennis, however, is portrayed as somewhat of a saint, his being repressed and restrained by
social standards, saying to Jack, You may be a sinner but I ain t yet had the opportunity . Another
interesting typical thing in the Western genre that was altered was that instead of Indians being
the villain, the enemy is that of a ignorant and oppressive society a society that would kill Ennis
and Jack for being different , Ennis says to Jack, this thing takes hold of us at the wrong place,
wrong time and we re dead, which shows how much they both worry about it but the two cowboys
still have to find some way to pull through and struggle to find their true selves in this society, but it

their brutalities of warfare are centered on their beliefs in the supernatural power of the gods.

The treatment of captives would be better since it was more important to integrate into the

is only seen in few scenes in the exposition of the movie and onboard the U.S.S Enterprise, but
she is not given any characterization, backstory, or even a clear duty as a crew member. While
every character is given a few seconds to either say or show their importance to the spaceship,
Uhura is given the smallest description of her role, if there really is a clear one given. Her main
scenes in the movie and role are being Spock s girlfriend, comforting him in the elevator, kissing
him goodbye as he leaves for a mission, and speechlessly gazing at him with love or concern
while the men define the action the crew will take, showing how far away this female character

Kautilya s Theories On War Essay
Kautilya s Theories on War for the Twenty First Century
Intrigue, assassination, spies, and prostitutes make for captivating reading in Kautilya s
Arthishastra. One could easily dismiss this extensive composition as amusing literature from
ancient times, seemingly relevant today only in fiction or action adventure movies. Kautilya, an
ancient Indian military theorist and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, is known as an extreme realist
who by comparison makes Machiavelli appear tame due to the brutality of his methods. Kautilya s
Arthashastra is a comprehensive compendium containing fifteen books providing kings and
ministers procedures for conquering, maintaining control of, and running states in the dangerous
and uncertain environment of ancient India. Of the fifteen books, three relate to war and national
security and contain several concepts relevant to modern times. Like Kautilia over two thousand
years ago, the United States (U.S.) military today faces a dangerous and uncertain global
environment and therefore must prepare for a wide array of contingencies. A brief review of three
books contained in the Arthashastra that relate to war and national security provide insight to key
issues that challenged Kautilya in his time and also challenge the U.S. military today; these issues
are not addressed by other military theorists and for this reason I believe that Kautilya s
Arthashastra best explains the nature and character of war in the 21st century.

and dried sales techniques, often using his other associates as pretend clients in order to just
make the sell, whether or not he s tricking extorting money out of his clients. Right from the
beginning, he is trying to con leads out of Williamson, his supervisor. ... I need the leads... , he
boldly tells Williamson who reluctantly begins to make him a deal (Mamet 1418). Right from
the get go, Leven is already using the manipulation techniques he uses day in and day out on his
co workers even. Loman pushes his honest, integrity, and personality traits as the key to selling
success, though we see an obvious decline in his selling abilities compared to the others. That
being said, both characters are still very flawed with illusions of owning their own companies
and waiting for the right client to come along. They both still have some nasty personality traits
and are still putting on a façade to trick people; however, Willy Loman is tricking his family
while Shelly Levene is tricking his consumers. Hard selling is a selling technique in which the
salesman manipulates the psychological state of the consumer in order to achieve a sale, whether
or not the sale is good (Baron amp; Branscombe). There is little concern for the consumer at all, in
fact, often

A Study Of Ja Biosynthesis
The study of JA biosynthesis in both dicots and monocots revealed that phospholipids such as
linolenic (18:2) and О± linolenic (18:3) acid are released from chloroplast membranes through the
action of phospholipases. In the subsequent steps formation of hydroperoxy octadecadienoic acids
(e.g., 13S HPODE and 9S HPODE) occurs through dioxygenation. These steps are catalyzed by
lipoxygenases (LOXs; 9 LOX and 13 LOX). In futher steps HPODEs are converted to 12 oxo
phytodienoic acid (12 OPDA) in plastids, catalyzed first by allene oxide synthase (AOS; EC
4.2.1.92) and subsequently by allene oxide cyclase (AOC; EC 5.3.99.6). 12 oxo phytodienoic acid
is then reduced to JA via the action of 12 OPDA reductase (OPR; EC 1.3.1.42) followed by three
cycles of пЃў oxidation in the peroxisome (Lyons et al., 2013). Jasmonic acid is also metabolized
to a variety of products that include the MeJA, amide conjugates with amino acids (JA Ile),
conjugates with sugars and hydroxylated and didehydro derivatives (Staswick, 2008). All
enzymes and proteins involved in JA biosynthesis and perception have been cloned from various
plant species and some of them have been crystallized (e.g. 13 LOX, 13 AOS, AOC, ACYL CoA
OXIDASE1, OPR3, JAR1 and the SCFCOI1 JAZ co receptor complex) (Kombrink, 2012;
Wasternack and Hause, 2013). As a ubiquitously occurring plant growth regulator, JA has been
reported to contribute significantly in plant stress defense by playing role as a signal of

In-Stadium Business Analysis
Incentives for fans to attend live sporting events have arguably never been lower than they are
today. Ever rising ticket prices, coupled with the increased affordability of high quality home
televisions, have led many fans to choose to root for their team from the confines of their own
home. Owners and leagues, recognizing that fans now have less incentive to buy tickets than in
year s past, are now trying to make changes to their in stadiumproduct to ensure that the present day
apathy of fans doesn t parlay into a loss of profits in the future. Among the changes being made to
strengthen the in stadium experience are enhanced smart phone integration into gameday activities
and partnerships with fantasy sports websites. When you take into... Show more content on

Given how crucial these changes are to the industry s continued prosperity, all options must be
examine thoroughly as this is a decision that they can t afford to botch. In a blog post Clinton
Bonner, a senior manager in marketing for Appirio, suggested that the utilization of Google
Glass esque technology within the stadium would be the way to go. Bonner suggests that fans
would be able to view instant replay, check their fantasy teams, and see the game from the point
of view of other seats within the stadium, using this technology. Others, as suggested in Morgan
Lathrop and Mark Cuban s respective blogs, are more skeptical of further utilization of gadgets
and gizmos. They speculate that these technologies may actually incentivize fans not to attend
games. They don t think a rational consumer would spend their hard earned money on tickets,
only to do what they could do on their own couch: use their phone. The key to them is to give
fans a reason to buy tickets by giving them reason not to look down at their phone. They believe
that a fan s experience at a game should be similar to that of a family wedding that is a lot of fun

Educational Goals Research Paper
My educational goals are to use my time wisely, earn more scholarships, be part of student
government, and continue being the best that I can be. I want to maintain a 3.6 GPA or higher.
I want to prove to myself that education is important and that I know I can do it. Not only doing
work, but I am going to read more books and possibly stay away from the media because it is
nothing but a waste of time and I need to focus on my studies more. After all the time I have
wasted, I actually regret the time I could have been used for studying. In addition to my short
term goals, I will build up my study skills so that way I can do well on standardized exams such
as entrance to colleges for the California State Universities. Even though I have failed on my SAT
and ACT due to low test scores of academic background and other personal issues, I think I
deserve to work harder than relax. The more time I tend to put off and just relax, I tend... Show

Poverty Of A Indebted Poor Countries ( Hipc ) A Project By...
INTRODUCTION
This paper looks at the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) a project by the IMF and World
Bank.
DEBT RELIEF KEY TO POVERTY REDUCTION
The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) with its view that no poor country faces a
debt burden that it cannot manage, came up with an initiative in 1996 called HIPC initiative. Since
then, the International financial community and the multilateral organizations and governments
have worked tirelessly together to reduce external debt to sustain levels for the many Highly
Indebted Poor Countries. The World Bankand its partner IMF believes that poverty reduction will
come by reducing debt levels of the country.
NEGATIVE OUTCOMES OF HIPC INITIATIVES ON ZAMBIA
The World Bank and the IMF, almost always put conditions to members states to access financial
assistance. HIPC countries like Zambia were not an exceptional.
Four conditions were put in place for HIPC to meet, this includes:
1. be eligible to borrow from the World Bank s International Development Agency.
2. Face an unsustainable debt burden, that cannot be sustain through traditional mechanism debt
relief.
3. Have established a track record of reforms and sound policies.
4. Develop a Poverty Reduction Strategic Paper
The technicalities behind the above conditions came at a price, which to date, a little of progress
has been seen. Civic leaders under the leadership of President Levy Mwanawasa of the Republic of
Zambia, were on each other s tails.

George Orwell Politics And The English Language Analysis
In Politics and the English language, George Orwell portrays various tricks by which the work
of prose construction is habitually dodged. (Orwell 583). Orwell s argument is the English
language is being deformed by modern writers thus mocking the use of the language. Orwell
relates this topic to political and economic issues to show how the use of English is critical with
these aspects. He refers to this topic as a reversible process (Orwell 581) if writers follow his six
rules; without them the writing contains staleness of imagery and lack of precision. (Orwell 582).
Orwell names these tricks: dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction,
and meaningless words. In Shooting an Elephant, Orwell uses these tricks to provide rhetorical
motives. Orwell mentions He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it (Orwell 853) to refer to
himself when he was a police man in Moulmein, Burma.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orwell states dying metaphors are in effect reverted to being an ordinary word and can generally
be used without loss of vividness. (Orwell 583). The comparison between a man wearing a mask
and the face of the man growing into the mask negate each other causing this metaphor to be
unclear. The negation kills the visual image for the reader by making it unclear if the mask
actually fits Orwell s face. If the reader cannot picture the comparison of a metaphor, it fails to
have meaning which is classifies it as a dead

Sucrose And Fermentation
As expected, the hypothesis stated before the experiment was proven correct because the different
substrates did have an effect on the rate of fermentation in the yeast cells (Table 2). However, the
predictions of how each substrate would affect the rate of fermentation were not illustrated in the
results of this experiment. For example, before the experiment it was predicted that the substrate
glucosewould produce the highest rate of fermentation, but the flask containing glucose along with
the yeastcells, flask two, had a lower rate of fermentation than two other flasks.
Despite the fact that glucose as a substrate produced less carbon dioxide than two of the other
substrates, it is important to note that it did produce more carbon ... Show more content on

Food and drink such as alcohol and bread rely on the process of alcoholic fermentation, so the
most efficient substrate is an important factor for quick production of these products (Aidoo et al.,
2006). For example, bread uses alcoholic fermentation to make the dough of the bread rise and
alcohol is the main product of alcoholic fermentation. Based on the findings of this experiment, I
would suggest using glucose before fructose as substrate for this process and sucrose before
maltose based purely on their rates of fermentation. However, further testing should be done to test
the rate of fermentation over a longer period of time as this experiment was completed after only
twenty minutes of fermentation. It would also be interesting to test other effects of the substrates
such as their effect on the taste of the products in the food industry which utilize alcoholic

The Role Of Fear In Laurie Halse Anderson s Fever 1793
Fear is the feeling of being scared or afraid, or does it mean more? Fear can change someone and
make them into a different person. In the book, Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson (2000),
shows how fear can change the lives of people. The story is about a 14 year old girl Mattie, who
lives in Philadelphia when the devastating yellow fever epidemic of 1793 hits the nation s capitol.
Soon the fever hits her home and Mattie has to leave, enduring many frightening adventures trying
to survive. This story illustrates when people are afraid, their fearand sadness can make them lose
their sense of identity. At the beginning of the story, Mattie is a normal girl living in the glorious
city of Philadelphia. Soon a fever outbreak appears and starts to frighten the people of the
capitol. Some doctors warn we may see a thousand dead before it s over. There are forty
thousand people living in Philadelphia, William. Can you imagine if one in forty were to die?
(59). Clearly the people of Philadelphia were terrified. As the story moves along, this fever begins
to create a devastating mess in the city of Philadelphia, They say bodies are piling up like
firewood (64). This illustrates the nervous fear of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mattie s life starts to make her emotions rise and affects her health. A Quaker prophecy in
Philadelphia said, He who sitteth upon the Pale Horse, He whose name is death, will be sent
through the streets of Philadelphia. (113). The people were afraid of God s wrath because of
sinful behavior. Furthermore it gives another example of how people looked at the fever, using the

Stephen Hawking s Death Of The Greatest Scientist
Imagine if you could only move your left hand an inch or so, and the rest of your body was
completely paralyzed. You can t talk, and you can hardly move. This disease is called
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig s disease, or ALS and this is what Stephen Hawking has.
Despite the fact that he is handicapped, he has managed to become one of the greatest scientists
ever.
Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo
Galilei) in Oxford, England. As a kid, he was fascinated with the idea of an ever growing universe
that he lives in, and would occasionally lie on his front lawn, with his family, observing the sky and
taking turns looking through a telescope at the stars. On one quiet, dark ... Show more content on

His great abilities in physics were weakened by his poor study habits. After his final exam,
Stephen was on the line between first and second honors. To determine his degree, the professors
decided to give him an oral exam. He passed the test with excellence, and therefore, went on to
Cambridge.
At Cambridge University, he was going to study cosmetology, a branch of physics. Fortunately for
him he decided to study theoretical physics, not experimental physics where he would have had to
set up many experiments, which he could not have done after he got ALS.
By now, Stephen had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS slowly destroys the
nerves in the brain and spine. ALS victims usually die within 2 5 years because it destroys the
muscles used for breathing which leads to suffocation.
When he was diagnosed with ALS, he pretty much gave up his life. After he did not die after two
years, he realized he could go on with ALS and his study of cosmetology. Although he was weak,
he could still walk. After those 2 years, he decided he could not waste any time, there were
things he wanted to do in his life. Hawking wanted to get married and get a Ph.D. So he was
engaged to Jane Wilde in 1965. Hawking said, It [getting married to her] made me determined to
live, to go on. Jane really gave me the will to live. Then he got his Ph.D. and started to work at
Cambridge. He was now officially known as Professor Dr. Stephen William Hawking. His health

Descartes First Philosophy Analysis
In Descartes book, Meditations on First Philosophy, he explains the skeptical arguments of how
he view doubt. Descartes doubt comes in three waves, which makes it easy for him to determine
what he can doubt but difficult to restore faith back into his senses reliability. The first wave of
doubt is dreaming, in which he argues that all of the particulars are merely illusions. The second
wave of doubt is the simplest facts remaining real. Descartes knows that there are things that will
always just be true forever and that they are simplest facts, like geometry, and things that may
contain more complexity, like physics. The third wave of doubt is the deceiving deity, in which a
deceiving demon is controlling his senses at times. Through these... Show more content on

  • 2. Mistakes Made By Learners As A Result Of Carelessness Hansen (2006) explains errors as mistakes made by learners as a result of carelessness, misinterpretation of symbols and texts, lack of relevant experience or knowledge related to a Mathematical topic . From her research she found that misconceptions, eventually led to errors. Drews (2005) defines misconceptions as the misapplication of a rule, an overgeneralization or under generalization or an alternative conception of the situation . Misunderstandings are the result of a failure to grasp what was being taught; therefore reinforcement of the correct method needs to be issued. Errors, misconceptions and misunderstandings are all found within the classroom and are customary for children to use within their work. Vygotsky (1962) states that children think and learn socially through experience, interaction and support (Smith et al, 2003). The activities enable children to experiment, make decisions, errors and correct themselves (Bruce, 2005). As a teacher it is crucial to identify the misconstrued knowledge/concepts and the underlying problems in the most accurate way. It is through discussion with the child, their ideas and perceptions, that the true reasons for the misconceptions become evident. The National Numeracy Strategy (DfE, 1999) requires teachers to identify mistakes, using them as positive teaching points by talking about them and any misconceptions that led to them . Children regularly make errors, misconceptions and misunderstandings in Mathematics, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Abolishing Death Penalty The future of the death penalty lies unclear in the cross country battle over whether or not it should be abolished. The death penalty should in fact be abolished because of the extreme costs and painful time involved to house and execute inmates, the indecision of which method of execution is the most humane, and the increasing number of innocent inmates being wrongfully executed. The number of death sentences peaked at about 315 in 1996, but last year dropped to only 73. In addition, the number of prisoners on death row dropped 17% from 3,593 in 2000, to 3,000 in 2015(Wolf and Johnson 1). Despite this rapid decline in the amount of death sentences and prisoners awaiting execution, 31 states still retain the death penalty, with only seven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... is that no states are seeking to reinforce the death penalty. For example, California houses 25% of the nation s 3,000 death row prisoners and the $137 million dollars the state spends on maintaining capital punishment has led to the states disliking. One aspect of capital punishment that has displeased average American citizens is all the attention on death row prisoners, making rock stars out of killers. Many believe the money and attention should be spent on more serious issues like disease or poverty or even on the struggling families of the victims. However, the crime rate jumped 122% from 1963 to 1980, and maybe that is why capital punishment is needed. The fear of being executed will diminish the amount of murders and crimes in the country, and that if we protect guilty lives then innocent lives will be given up in exchange. But by reinforcing the death penalty, innocents could be wrongly executed. Take for example Anthony Ray Hinton. Hinton spent 30 years on Alabama s death row after being convicted for two murders at age 29. But due to a defense lawyer s mistakes in 1985, he was granted a new hearing and was found innocent. After being freed he said, I spent 30 years on death row for something I didn t do. This supports my argument in that if all this time and money is spent on protecting the death penalty to come to a clear verdict, than there should never be a wrong conviction. The risk of wrongful convictions is greater if the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Frankie Avalon Research Paper It s a good chance that you ll quickly recall the name and talents of singer, actor Frankie Avalon, no matter your age. Frankie s stellar career embraced three generations of music, television and motion pictures and was an intrinsic fiber of American entertainment history. Frankie Avalon was born September 18, 1940 in The City of Brotherly Love , Philadelphia, PA. He could light the flame and turn up the heat on nearly every love struck teen girl or adult woman in America! A child prodigy, Frankie entered local amateur talent contests after he turned 10 and won them, one after another. In the years that ensued, he continued his musical studies and learning trumpet from a member of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. The song also reached number ten on the R B chart and was a man s plea to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, to send him a girl to love and one who will love him. Another of Frankie Avalon s best known songs was Why . Recorded in 1959, the song went to Number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart for the week of December 28, 1959, and the last Number 1 single of the 1950s. • 5. The Exciting yet Stressful Career of Computer Programming How could you be reading this paper right now without programs like Windows and Word that this document was made on? Technology is a fundamental part of our everyday lives, meaning the people who program computers have significant jobs. Although it is essential that computers are built from scratch, people are needed to transform these computers from complex machines that users need a college diploma to the user friendly interfaces we see today. In order to become and remain a computerprogrammer, a student could go to college and obtain a degree or self teach himself. Computer programming is a difficult yet rewarding career. Programmers use different programming languages in their day to day lives; similar to foreign languages they are similar in some ways but different in others. Three languages commonly used by computer programmers are Visual Basic, C++, and Java ( Major: Computer Programming, General ). Other languages include SQL, HTML, and .NET (Juliano, Jim). Programming can even be done as a hobby instead of a career (Reeves and Kent). People can release their work as open source software; many of these open source software such as Apache HTTPD, WordPress, and PHP run millions of websites across the world. Programming is a love it or hate it occupation (Reeves and Kent). A programmer has to have passion for programming in order to be successful; one cannot simply choose programming as a job unless they truly enjoy it. Programmers enjoy their jobs because ... Yet he did not receive the same way out, he was too cowardly and proud to take his own life, Jones was killed by one of his followers with a single gunshot to the back of the head (Jim Jones 2014). He died that day with his followers, with no punishment. The families of members of the cult will never have closure, no justice for those who had been killed. The biggest misconception about Jonestown is that it was a mass suicide, when in reality it was a mass murder, said a reporter that survived the shooting. Reverend Jim Jones had no punishment, he instead had himself killed. One thousand members were held imprisoned, 913 people killed, 270 of which are innocent children (Jim Jones Bio). Jim Jones was never punished for his crime, not to say he did not deserve to die, but Jones was never caught. With only a gunshot wound to the head, Jones died with his followers that day because it was his choice to die( Jonestown: Nightmare in Paradise). • 7. Research Paper On Haiti Earthquake Haiti Earthquake Have you ever heard of an earthquake so big that hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, more than three hundred thousand people were injured, and 1.5 million people became homeless? If not, let me introduce you to the Haiti Earthquake. This enormous earthquake destroyed many lives. It was believed to have been caused by the shifting of tectonic plates in the Earth. But, is this the truth? In 2010, an earthquake broke out in Haiti. The city was left in ruins, 1.5 million people lost their homes, and hundreds of thousands of people were either killed or injured. Scientists claim that the cause of this earthquake was because of slippage along the conservative plate boundary that runs through Haiti. But, some conspiracy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, conspiracy theorists think HAARP s purpose is far more sinister than meets the eye, says Stephanie Pappas, reporter for NBC news. HAARP is believed to use their resources for weather warfare, which also plays into the role of the thought of HAARP causing the earthquake in Haiti. Some reasoning that causes this theory is as follows: Just a few hundred miles away from Haiti is a HAARP array; The earthquake did not occur on a big fault line. This earthquake happened quite farther south of the North American plate and Caribbean plate. It is rare that a quake is to occur here, which makes room for conspiracies that HAARP caused it. These are just two of the many reasons that stem from HAARP s involvement with the Haiti Earthquake. So how did HAARP cause the earthquake? HAARP has heaters in the Ionosphere. From these heaters comes ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) waves. These waves are powerful enough, at the right frequency, to cause vibrations in the Earth, which can lead to an earthquake. One reason as to why HAARP would want to cause an earthquake is because of the idea that Haiti is an unguarded, unwanted, low protection country that could make a good place to test an earthquake. It also seems odd that, since this earthquake was deep in Earth s surface, it only affected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Descriptive Essay On Being A Waitress It s always nice to go out to eat, order a nice meal that you do not have to cook and be served everything you want. When going out to eat, have you ever thought about the person that is serving you food, getting you drinks, and making sure you have a pleasant experience at the restaurant of your choice? That person is a server. He or she is a waiter or waitress. I ve gone out to eat a lot, and I ve always been a little curious what is like to be the person serving the food and not eatingit. I chose to research this subculture because I was so curious about it. I have some friends that wait tables, but I hadn t really thought about how being a waitress involves so many things aside from serving food. Waitressing is more about handling all different types of people, and learning to multitask successfully than just serving food. When I go out to eat, I usually only notice if the waitress or waiter is nice to me and my party. I make sure that all of the food and drinks come out the way we ordered them, and I also pay attention to how the food tastes. When I started my research and observation for this ethnography, I started to pay more attention the server when I was eating at restaurants. I started to notice how many tables the server waited on, I noticed how many times he or she had to take food back to the kitchen because someone thought it was wrong or not cooked right, and I also noticed how unhappy he or she was when they left a certain table. • 11. Social Norms In The Adventures Of Peregrine Pickle In the excerpt from The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle , Smollett does an excellent job conveying the social norms of 1751. The passage is driven by mockery and disrespect, yet neither man will let the tension ruin their reputation. While both men show signs of anger and disrespect, neither one directly insults the other. As Pickle is confronted about the nature of his and Emilia, he becomes angry. Yet, Gauntlet had no intentions of offending him. As their conversation continues, the tensions rise and both men start to let their emotions control them. The tone of the passage changes immediately from curiosity, to anger, as Gauntlet expresses to Pickle I should know the nature of it , this is where everything starts to build. Gauntlet s tone throughout the passage is almost one of irritation, he seems as if he is irritated by the way Pickle responded to him. Pickle immediately comes off snooty and arrogant as if he owes nothing to Gauntlet. The narrator remains calm and relaxed throughout and does not seem surprised when Gauntlet challenges Pickle to a sword fight to settle their dispute. • 12. Analysis Of The Joy Of Secrecy I The Joy of Secrecy Dear reader, I ask you to accompany me on a journey through the mind of a great creator. Not the Great Creator, mind you, but only one, and that one is myself. Many would consider me to be a rash man, one of immense skill but little actual talent, one who believes more intensely than rational thought may permit. And in that sense, they consider me to be a dreamer. But what a perfect profession I have found! It is the most acceptable profession for a dreamer to have, in my honest opinion, for what other type of work allows one to make his dreams a reality? Truly, animation is the one true profession for dreamers, the most accepting line of work for such strong and skilled personalities. I, myself, find that life is merely a composition of brush strokes and feathered lines sketched by a hand careless in its execution. A hand that may erect and raze as it wishes, or, in such cases as my own, as it is commanded by an even higher power than that which wills life from vacuous space. Among my company my associates, if you will, or if you will not, my coworkers I alone dare to dream of the unreality of life, dare to reject the hand that abides by no mortal law or rule of happiness. My lines do more than animate ink and paper in a sort of strange necromancy. From my own hand I bestow life upon flat bodies, make them twist and turn and sing the body electric . I am a special sort of man, a unique form of animator, one who dreams more than most, often more than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Malleus Maleficarum, By Dominican Inquisitors Heinrich... The Malleus Maleficarum, published in 1487 and authored by Dominican Inquisitors Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, was used by Catholics and Protestants as a bank of knowledge on how to locate and prosecute witches. Though the text was published in 1487, it was still used as the premier text on witches well into the 18th century. The text is incredibly thorough, covering the topics of witch identification, explanations of how witches make their pacts with the devil, and how to effectively conduct a trial. This text was written to be read by upper class members of the clergy and secular governments. The audience of this text largely informed the language and content which Kramer and Sprenger used and included. Because of the very clear and directed audience who was intended to read this text, the authors got away with rhetoric which would not necessarily be believed or agreed with by the laypeople who would actually be affected by the contents of The Malleus Maleficarum. The Malleus Maleficarum is explicitly misogynistic when addressing who can be a witch, when describing the pact that a woman makes with the devil, and the process by which an accused witch is questioned and tried. The Malleus Maleficarum is very explicit about which gender is more likely to practice witchcraft. Multiple sections of the texts specifically reference the fact that women are more likely to be witches, and gives details about why women are more likely to be coerced into witchcraft by the ... This idea became a prevalent thought in the minds of many United States citizens. The expansion into new territories across the continent was a direct link in the chain of events leading to the Civil War. • 21. Life And Death In Donald Barthelme s The School Donald Barthelme s story, The School, takes on an untraditional way of explaining life and the meaning behind it. Donald Barthelme was an influential writer during the mid 1900 s and was an especially important part of flash fiction. Many of his stories were very short. His approach at writing enabled him to highlight his themes in an unusual way. He uses escalation to emphasize the deaths of plants and herbs going all the way to the deathof people. Michael Byers, an assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan, writes about The School saying, curiosity, love, personal connection all sources of solace in the face of death, and once that solace arrives, the dead world returns to life (Byers). I agree with Byers that these things are sources of solace; however, I do not think Barthelme was trying to imply that after death we return to life. I believe Barthelme was trying to emphasize the meaning of lifewhen answering the children s question by saying, life is that which gives meaning to life. He was saying that death is a natural part of human life which exists all around us. Barthelme emphasized his theme of life by using the escalation of death throughout the story. I think Barthelme wanted readers to see that life and death are the basis for existence and that one cannot exist without the other; humor through escalation is brought into effect to create the harsh contrast of life versus death. The beauty of science fiction films is the ability of them to take the audience to a different world to excite the feelings of awe and wonder, making us leave the realism and probable behind. These alterations from ordinary life and reality may take away from authenticity, but science fiction can prove to resemble more of our society when analyzing the societies and advancements created in these films. She is only seen in few scenes in the exposition of the movie and onboard the U.S.S Enterprise, but she is not given any characterization, backstory, or even a clear duty as a crew member. While every character is given a few seconds to either say or show their importance to the spaceship, Uhura is given the smallest description of her role, if there really is a clear one given. Her main scenes in the movie and role are being Spock s girlfriend, comforting him in the elevator, kissing him goodbye as he leaves for a mission, and speechlessly gazing at him with love or concern while the men define the action the crew will take, showing how far away this female character matters to the plot (Tudor and Meehan 132). Looking at another female character, Gaila is given the same treatment as Uhura in filling a non progressive role in society. Gaila is seen in her main scene as a sexy female involved with Kirk with the coincidence run into Uhura once again. Gaila falls into the minimal role of a sexual distraction to the main character that ends up depicting women to an unimportant role in developing the story. These women and other female characters that appear in the movie mostly occupy traditional narrative roles: mother, sexual partner, and girlfriend, giving them supportive roles and ultimately sticking to the conservative story where men are the heroes and women are there to support the men on their quest (Tudor and Meehan 132). Kautilya s Theories On War Essay Kautilya s Theories on War for the Twenty First Century Intrigue, assassination, spies, and prostitutes make for captivating reading in Kautilya s Arthishastra. One could easily dismiss this extensive composition as amusing literature from ancient times, seemingly relevant today only in fiction or action adventure movies. Kautilya, an ancient Indian military theorist and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, is known as an extreme realist who by comparison makes Machiavelli appear tame due to the brutality of his methods. Kautilya s Arthashastra is a comprehensive compendium containing fifteen books providing kings and ministers procedures for conquering, maintaining control of, and running states in the dangerous and uncertain environment of ancient India. Of the fifteen books, three relate to war and national security and contain several concepts relevant to modern times. Like Kautilia over two thousand years ago, the United States (U.S.) military today faces a dangerous and uncertain global environment and therefore must prepare for a wide array of contingencies. A brief review of three books contained in the Arthashastra that relate to war and national security provide insight to key issues that challenged Kautilya in his time and also challenge the U.S. military today; these issues are not addressed by other military theorists and for this reason I believe that Kautilya s Arthashastra best explains the nature and character of war in the 21st century. • 43. A Study Of Ja Biosynthesis The study of JA biosynthesis in both dicots and monocots revealed that phospholipids such as linolenic (18:2) and О± linolenic (18:3) acid are released from chloroplast membranes through the action of phospholipases. In the subsequent steps formation of hydroperoxy octadecadienoic acids (e.g., 13S HPODE and 9S HPODE) occurs through dioxygenation. These steps are catalyzed by lipoxygenases (LOXs; 9 LOX and 13 LOX). In futher steps HPODEs are converted to 12 oxo phytodienoic acid (12 OPDA) in plastids, catalyzed first by allene oxide synthase (AOS; EC 4.2.1.92) and subsequently by allene oxide cyclase (AOC; EC 5.3.99.6). 12 oxo phytodienoic acid is then reduced to JA via the action of 12 OPDA reductase (OPR; EC 1.3.1.42) followed by three cycles of пЃў oxidation in the peroxisome (Lyons et al., 2013). Jasmonic acid is also metabolized to a variety of products that include the MeJA, amide conjugates with amino acids (JA Ile), conjugates with sugars and hydroxylated and didehydro derivatives (Staswick, 2008).
