What do Alicia and Johanna discuss
about driving safely in the winter?

It is so cold outside!
I know. It is absolutely frigid.
This weather can be very dangerous you know.
I know. Did you get a chance to read the article about how to be safe in the winter?
No, but can you tell me about it?
Sure. In a nutshell, it discussed hypothermia and frostbite. Both of these
conditions are severe and can lead to amputation or even death!
No. They are similar, but there are some differences. Frostbite is caused by one
our limbs becoming frozen. If the frostbite is severe enough, the affected body
part may have to be amputated.
Frostbite and hypothermia are the same condition. Are they not?
No Kidding! Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops too low.
This can lead to death?
Listen to a dialogue:

Yes. Hypothermia can lead to death.
I love winter, but I can see we must be mindful of the dangers of bitterly cold
weather.
Right. The article stressed the importance of keeping dry while outside. Keeping
dry will go a long way towards keeping us comfortable and safe in winter.
That makes sense. The other day I went for a walk in very deep snow and my feet
got soaked. My feet felt numb and my whole body felt chilled.
Now another consideration is the wind chill. This simply means that a windy day
in the winter will usually feel considerably cold than a calm day.
I know that a windy day can make -10c feel bitterly cold.
You really need to read the article. I’m going to quickly run home quickly and get it
for you.
Thanks a lot!
No prob! I’ll be right back.
Let’s learn what we can do to be safe in
the winter!

Case studies
Activity 5
Case Study 1
Simbaljeet went for a long walk with her mother.
Along the way she noticed that her mother
gradually became very confused.
What could be the problem, and what could she
do about it?
Case Study 2
Bob and his family are heading out for road trip.
What should he do first?
Case Study 3
Shamsun went for a walk. It was only -10c
outside, but it seemed so much colder!
How could this be?
Case Study 4
Jon suspects he’s got frostbite. Upon entering the
house he put his hands in hot water and began to
rub them together.
What mistake(s) did he make?
Case Study 5
What can he do to keep warm?
Marcos has been waiting for the bus for more
than 5 minutes. It is very cold.
Dictation
Activity 6
Dictation 1
Running or walking is a great way to keep warm while
outside on a cold day.
Dictation 2
Wet clothing can severely chill the body. Remove any wet
clothing as soon as possible.
Dictation 3
Keeping an emergency kit in the trunk of your car could
save your life. Update it from time to time to be sure you
have the equipment you need in case of an emergency.
Dictation 4
Hypothermia can lead to death. If you suspect someone
is suffering from hypothermia be sure to get medical help
immediately. Lay the injured person down, carefully
remove any wet clothing and try to very gradually warm
the person.
Dictation 5
Winter can be dangerous if proper care is not taken. If the
weather is very bad stay at home if possible. If you
absolutely must go out make sure you dress
appropriately; this means dressing in layers and making
sure your head and hands are covered.

  • 30. Let’s listen to a dialogue Activity 3 What do Alicia and Johanna discuss about driving safely in the winter?
  • 31. Listen to a dialogue: Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia It is so cold outside! I know. It is absolutely frigid. This weather can be very dangerous you know. I know. Did you get a chance to read the article about how to be safe in the winter? No, but can you tell me about it? Sure. In a nutshell, it discussed hypothermia and frostbite. Both of these conditions are severe and can lead to amputation or even death! No. They are similar, but there are some differences. Frostbite is caused by one our limbs becoming frozen. If the frostbite is severe enough, the affected body part may have to be amputated. Frostbite and hypothermia are the same condition. Are they not? No Kidding! Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops too low. This can lead to death?
  • 32. Listen to a dialogue: Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Alicia Johanna Yes. Hypothermia can lead to death. I love winter, but I can see we must be mindful of the dangers of bitterly cold weather. Right. The article stressed the importance of keeping dry while outside. Keeping dry will go a long way towards keeping us comfortable and safe in winter. That makes sense. The other day I went for a walk in very deep snow and my feet got soaked. My feet felt numb and my whole body felt chilled. Now another consideration is the wind chill. This simply means that a windy day in the winter will usually feel considerably cold than a calm day. I know that a windy day can make -10c feel bitterly cold. You really need to read the article. I’m going to quickly run home quickly and get it for you. Thanks a lot! No prob! I’ll be right back.
