4. The “Be” Verb
• Is the most common verb in English.
• Is an irregular verb.
• Has 3 meanings:
1. to exist:
Ex. I am here.
2. to occur
Ex. The meeting is tomorrow.
3. to have the characteristics of
something.
Ex. She is a quiet child.

6. “Be” – Simple Present
Write an example sentence in the chat.

SINGULAR PLURAL
First Person I am a teacher. We are teachers.
Second Person You are a student. You are students.
Third Person It is time for a break. They are here now.

First Person I was an artist. We were artists.
Second Person You were a musician. You were musicians.
Third Person She was alone. They were happy to see
her.
8. “Be” – The present and past continuous(progressive):
The continuous tenses use the present (or past) “be” verb + the base form
of a verb (ing). They describe an ongoing action.

PRESENT PAST
First Person I am driving. I was talking to you.
Second Person You are learning. You were studying.
Third Person He is driving. They were driving.

The simple future: all subjects
will + be
I will be there tomorrow.
The future continuous:
will + be + (ing) verb
I will be thinking about you.

All modals: can should could must might will
modal + be
Examples:
You should be home by now.
He must be exhausted after that long flight.

11. “Be” - past participle (perfect tenses): describe a completed action.
Present perfect: has/have + been
You have been quiet all day.
Past perfect: had + been
I had been to Winnipeg before.

In the present and past tenses, put the negative word immediately
after to be.
You are not my only friend. (present)
She was never on time. (past)
For future tenses, put the negative word after will and before the
bare infinitive be.
We will not be attending that party.

What is “small talk”?
“Small talk” is light, friendly, informal conversation. It is a part of
socializing in English.
In North America, making small talk is a common practice. People make
small talk at bus stops, in elevators, waiting in lineups and many other
places where people (who often don’t know each other well), meet.
We talk about things like weather, current events, work, school, family
and ourselves.

1. be friendly
2. make a situation more comfortable
3. get to know someone else

24. Be verb – Small Talk Dialogues
Here is an example of “small talk” (waiting at the clinic)
A: Have you been waiting long?
B. No. I’ve just got here actually. What about you?
A. I have been waiting here for 45 minutes. I am getting upset!
B. There is always a long wait at this clinic. Are you from around
here?
A. I am. I live in Scarborough. And you?
B. I live a few blocks away. This clinic is the closest one.
A. I am hoping we don’t have to wait much longer.
B. I am too!

25. Be verb – Discussions (Breakout Rooms)
The “Be” verb is perfect for “small talk” and can be used to make
questions that help us to get to know someone else.
Some examples of questions to use here:
• Where are you from?
• Where were you before you came to Canada?
• Are you nervous to speak English?
• Have you been learning English for very long?
• What is your favorite thing to eat?
• What is your favorite season?
• Are you usually on time, or usually late?

Using the be verb:
How would you describe yourself?
Complete the sentence in the chat: (You can be more than one thing…)
This can be what you do (I am a teacher), who you are (in your family (I
am a mother) or adjectives that describe your personality…
I am….a teacher, a mother. I am a person who loves words, animals,
coffee, and books. My favorite season is the Fall.
Remember to use the “be” verb.
