ROLLING Processes
Introduction
•Definition of Rolling: The process of
plastically deforming metal by
passing it between rolls.
•Rolling is the most widely used
forming process, which provides high
production and close control of final
product.
•The metal is subjected to high
compressive stresses as a result of the
friction between the rolls and the
metal surface.
Classification of Rolling processes
 There are different types of rolling processes as listed below.
o Transverse or Cross rolling
o Shaped rolling or section rolling
o Skew Rolling
o Ring rolling
o Thread Rolling
o Tube Rolling
o Powder rolling
o Continuous casting and hot rolling
Transverse or Cross rolling
• Circular wedge rolls are used and are made to revolve in the same
direction. It is a typical hot rolling process in which heated bar is chopped
to length and is fed transversely between rolls. It is used for making gear
teeth and other parts.
Shaped rolling or section rolling
• Various I- beam and H- beam slabs are prepared using this cold rolling
process. The flat slab can be bent easily into complex shapes using driven
rolls, there is no appreciable change in the thickness and can be used for
making difficult to mould parts.

Skew Rolling
• Is a typical hot rolling operation in which round rods are fed to specially
designed rolls (threaded) to get metal balls. This is a combination of metal
rolling and metal forging operation.
Ring rolling
• It is a hot rolling operation in which rings of smaller diameter are fed to get
rings of larger diameter and reduced cross section. Rings of different shape
with high precision can be obtained without mush waste of material.
Thread Rolling
• It is used to make rolled threads which are much stronger than the
machined ones. A die presses the cylindrical feed into a system of threaded
rolls so that the material flow radially outwards to get thread cuts.
Tube Rolling
• It is a hot rolling operation in which tubes of different cross sections can
be formed by fixing a mandrel between the rod feed. The mandrel can be in
fixed position or moving position. The rolls have to be shaped accordingly
so that a tube cross section can be processed.
Powder rolling
• Metal powder is introduced between the rolls and compacted into a ‘green
strip’, which is subsequently sintered and subjected to further hot-working
and/or cold working and annealing cycles.
Continuous casting and hot rolling
• Metal is melted, cast and hot rolled continuously through a series of rolling
mills within the same process.
• Usually for steel sheet production
Types of mills
• Various rolling mill configurations are available to deal with the variety of
applications and technical problems in the rolling process.
• Two-high mill, pullover
The stock is returned to the
entrance for further reduction.
• Two-high mill, reversing
The work can be passed back and
forth through the rolls by
reversing their direction of
rotation.
• Three-high mill
Consist of upper and lower driven
rolls and a middle roll, which
rotates by friction.
• Four-high mill
Small-diameter rolls (less strength
& rigidity) are supported by larger-
diameter backup rolls
Each
• Cluster mill or Sendzimirmill
Each of the work rolls is supported
by two backing rolls.
Sheet Rolling Process
• Hot rolling :-
• The initial breakdown of ingots into blooms and billets is generally done by
hot-rolling. This is followed by further hot rolling into plate, sheet, rod, bar,
pipe, rail.
• Cold rolling :-
• The cold-rolling of metals has played a major role in industry by providing
sheet, strip, foil with good surface finishes and increased mechanical
strength with close control of product dimensions.

Introduction •Definition of Rolling: The process of plastically deforming metal by passing it between rolls. •Rolling is the most widely used forming process, which provides high production and close control of final product. •The metal is subjected to high compressive stresses as a result of the friction between the rolls and the metal surface.
  • 3. Classification of Rolling processes  There are different types of rolling processes as listed below. o Transverse or Cross rolling o Shaped rolling or section rolling o Skew Rolling o Ring rolling o Thread Rolling o Tube Rolling o Powder rolling o Continuous casting and hot rolling
  • 4. Transverse or Cross rolling • Circular wedge rolls are used and are made to revolve in the same direction. It is a typical hot rolling process in which heated bar is chopped to length and is fed transversely between rolls. It is used for making gear teeth and other parts.
  • 5. Shaped rolling or section rolling • Various I- beam and H- beam slabs are prepared using this cold rolling process. The flat slab can be bent easily into complex shapes using driven rolls, there is no appreciable change in the thickness and can be used for making difficult to mould parts.   • 6. Skew Rolling • Is a typical hot rolling operation in which round rods are fed to specially designed rolls (threaded) to get metal balls. This is a combination of metal rolling and metal forging operation.
  • 7. Ring rolling • It is a hot rolling operation in which rings of smaller diameter are fed to get rings of larger diameter and reduced cross section. Rings of different shape with high precision can be obtained without mush waste of material.
  • 8. Thread Rolling • It is used to make rolled threads which are much stronger than the machined ones. A die presses the cylindrical feed into a system of threaded rolls so that the material flow radially outwards to get thread cuts.
  • 9. Tube Rolling • It is a hot rolling operation in which tubes of different cross sections can be formed by fixing a mandrel between the rod feed. The mandrel can be in fixed position or moving position. The rolls have to be shaped accordingly so that a tube cross section can be processed.
  • 10. Powder rolling • Metal powder is introduced between the rolls and compacted into a ‘green strip’, which is subsequently sintered and subjected to further hot-working and/or cold working and annealing cycles.
  • 11. Continuous casting and hot rolling • Metal is melted, cast and hot rolled continuously through a series of rolling mills within the same process. • Usually for steel sheet production

Types of mills • Various rolling mill configurations are available to deal with the variety of applications and technical problems in the rolling process. • Two-high mill, pullover The stock is returned to the entrance for further reduction. • Two-high mill, reversing The work can be passed back and forth through the rolls by reversing their direction of rotation.
  • 13. • Three-high mill Consist of upper and lower driven rolls and a middle roll, which rotates by friction. • Four-high mill Small-diameter rolls (less strength & rigidity) are supported by larger- diameter backup rolls Each • Cluster mill or Sendzimirmill Each of the work rolls is supported by two backing rolls.
  • 14. Sheet Rolling Process • Hot rolling :- • The initial breakdown of ingots into blooms and billets is generally done by hot-rolling. This is followed by further hot rolling into plate, sheet, rod, bar, pipe, rail.

  • 16. • Cold rolling :- • The cold-rolling of metals has played a major role in industry by providing sheet, strip, foil with good surface finishes and increased mechanical strength with close control of product dimensions.
