LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
Port No. 389
The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol is an application protocol for
accessing and maintaining distributed directory information services over
an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It is used for centralized login.
Install ldap:
[root@ localhost ~]# yum install openldap
Now we have to copy the sample configuration file to /etc/openldap
[root@ localhost ~]# cp /usr/share/ldap/slapd.conf.obsolute
/etc/openldap/slapd.conf
Now open file for editing
[root@ localhost ~]# vi /etc/openldap/slapd.conf
Change suffix, rootdn and directory in file as follow:
Now save file and create a directory in /var/lib/ldap with name of your
domain and chage permission to 777.
[root@localhost ~]# mkdir /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com
[root@localhost ~]# chmod –R 777 /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com
Now open database file and change olcsuffix, olcrootdn and olcdirectory
[root@localhost ~]# vi /etc/openldap/slapd.d/cn=config/olcDatabase={2}bdb.ldif
Now save file and start service.
[root@localhost ~]# service slapd start
Now locate DB_CONFIG sample file
[root@localhost ~]# locate DB_CONFIG /usr/share/openldap-
servers/DB_CONFIG.example
Copy DB_CONFIG.example file to /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com
[root@localhost ~]# cp /usr/share/openldap-servers/DB_CONFIG.example
/var/lib/ldap/hpes.com/DB_CONFIG
change ownership and group of DB_CONFIG to ldap
[root@localhost ~]# chown ldap:ldap /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com/DB_CONFIG
Delete all database from /etc/openldap/slapd.d/ and test the configuration file
[root@localhost ~]# slaptest -F /etc/openldap/slapd.d/ -f /etc/openldap/slapd.conf
Now create a file, and do the following entry in file
[root@localhost ~]# vi /anyfile
Save file.
Now add this domain entry to database file.
[root@localhost ~]# ldapadd -x -D “cn=Manager,dc=hpes,dc=com” -w redhat -f /anyfile
create users, grep all users from passwd file and append the output to a file
[root@localhost ~]# grep user /etc/passwd > /anyfile1
Install migration tool for migrating users
[root@localhost ~]# yum install migration*
[root@localhost ~]# /usr/share/migrationtools/migrate_passwd.pl /anyfile1 > /anyfile2
chage the new file with your domain name
[root@localhost ~]# vi /anyfile2
Save file and add the user information to database.
[root@localhost ~]# ldapadd -x -D “cn=Manager,dc=hpes,dc=com” -w redhat –f /anyfile2
Now your ldap server is ready to work, take a linux client that must be
lower version from server (RHEL-5). Run setup command 
Authentication  use ldap  give server address and domain name 
ok.
Now login with users which you have added to ldap.

  • 1. LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Port No. 389
  • 2. The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol is an application protocol for accessing and maintaining distributed directory information services over an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It is used for centralized login. Install ldap: [root@ localhost ~]# yum install openldap Now we have to copy the sample configuration file to /etc/openldap [root@ localhost ~]# cp /usr/share/ldap/slapd.conf.obsolute /etc/openldap/slapd.conf Now open file for editing [root@ localhost ~]# vi /etc/openldap/slapd.conf
  • 3. Change suffix, rootdn and directory in file as follow:
  • 4. Now save file and create a directory in /var/lib/ldap with name of your domain and chage permission to 777. [root@localhost ~]# mkdir /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com [root@localhost ~]# chmod –R 777 /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com Now open database file and change olcsuffix, olcrootdn and olcdirectory [root@localhost ~]# vi /etc/openldap/slapd.d/cn=config/olcDatabase={2}bdb.ldif
  • 5. Now save file and start service. [root@localhost ~]# service slapd start Now locate DB_CONFIG sample file [root@localhost ~]# locate DB_CONFIG /usr/share/openldap- servers/DB_CONFIG.example Copy DB_CONFIG.example file to /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com [root@localhost ~]# cp /usr/share/openldap-servers/DB_CONFIG.example /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com/DB_CONFIG change ownership and group of DB_CONFIG to ldap [root@localhost ~]# chown ldap:ldap /var/lib/ldap/hpes.com/DB_CONFIG
  • 6. Delete all database from /etc/openldap/slapd.d/ and test the configuration file [root@localhost ~]# slaptest -F /etc/openldap/slapd.d/ -f /etc/openldap/slapd.conf Now create a file, and do the following entry in file [root@localhost ~]# vi /anyfile Save file.
  • 7. Now add this domain entry to database file. [root@localhost ~]# ldapadd -x -D “cn=Manager,dc=hpes,dc=com” -w redhat -f /anyfile create users, grep all users from passwd file and append the output to a file [root@localhost ~]# grep user /etc/passwd > /anyfile1 Install migration tool for migrating users [root@localhost ~]# yum install migration* [root@localhost ~]# /usr/share/migrationtools/migrate_passwd.pl /anyfile1 > /anyfile2 chage the new file with your domain name [root@localhost ~]# vi /anyfile2
  • 8. Save file and add the user information to database. [root@localhost ~]# ldapadd -x -D “cn=Manager,dc=hpes,dc=com” -w redhat –f /anyfile2
  • 9. Now your ldap server is ready to work, take a linux client that must be lower version from server (RHEL-5). Run setup command  Authentication  use ldap  give server address and domain name  ok. Now login with users which you have added to ldap.
