The Search for Enlightenment Essay
The Search for Enlightenment
Nature, I think we can deduce, refers not only to animals, plants, and mountains, but rather to the
universe as a whole the entirety of the physical universe ranging from human nature to quantum
nature while also including, plants, animals, and mountains as part of this greater whole. It has been
the search for knowledge and truths of the wonders and mysteries of nature, or rather the universe (in
other words science) that has, over the past few years been the underlying motivation in my life. Not
only do I find the search for knowledge exciting and intellectually stimulating, but I have found that
this motivation gives meaning or rather a direction to my life. I don t wish to imply that science and ...

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of science and one that I disagree with. Instead
my drive for competency has made science seem attractive, not because it tries to replace God and
metaphysical ideology, but rather that it explains the universe without having to rely on untestable
assumptions (which we can t know to be true) about how the universe should or would make sense to
be. As I believe that there is no God or transcendental explanation for life or the cosmos, I aspire to
understand human behavior, not in terms of metaphysical and transcendental explanations, but rather
in an empirical approach based on logic, reason, and the consiliecnce (Wilson 1998, p.8) of the
sciences and knowledge.
Yet, my innate desire for competence leads to another important motivation that affects my being, that
is the quest for authenticism. To be authentic, I refer to being original, honest about my thoughts to
myself and others; aware and skeptical of the motivation and assumptions of culture and society;
attempting to recognize and dissect assumptions of my creation and that of culture and societies; being
able to relate to others; and finally, being hyper conscious of myself. By hyper conscious, I refer to the
state of consciousness deeper than that of awareness of one s existence, that being the awareness of
one s motivations the constant introspection, thought, and questioning of one s actions and

The Problem Of The Unhappy Valley
Unhappy Valley Everyday humans are faced with dilemmas where they must decide on what
considered right, and what is considered wrong. Whether they are fifty or five, all humans face
situations like that. There are times when humans make the wrong decision thinking it s right, or make
the right decision, but it s wrong. When it comes to making decisions, older generations are held to a
higher standard than younger generations. That is because they are expected to be responsible and
have had to experience difficult life situations, younger generations are known and expected to make
the wrong decisions constantly. But in some cases, adults will make that wrong ... Show more content

The film spotlights the wrong decisions, and the justifications that come with them. Bar Lev targets
the emotional and logical appeals of his audience while teaching them indirectly on what happened.
The rhetoric that is used in Happy Valley appeals the audience s emotional and logical appeals.
Throughout the film, Bar Lev introduces important key factors, like Sandusky s adopted son and
victim, Matt, Joe Paterno s wife, two of his son s, students of Penn State University in 2011, as well as
researchers and historians involved with Penn State. Bar Lev has them open up about their thoughts
and feelings on the scandal to focus on how it affected them. Ideally he is affecting the audience s
emotions, allowing them to feel as if they are a part of the story too. Likewise, he focuses on the
events leading up to the scandal, the scandal, and the aftermath of the scandal. Bar Lev likes to
produce stories on the difficult and uncomfortable topics that are hard to talk about. He states in a
recent interview, I look for the stories that tweek society s nerves (Bar Lev). Happy Valley, being one
of Bar Lev s numerous documentaries, does not create an obvious opinion that he holds, instead
leaving it up to the audience and their opinions. They are constantly changing their opinions especially
on the late Penn State head football coach, Joe Paterno. Paterno knew about Sandusky s sexual abuse
toward the young

Characteristics Of Authoritarianism In The Philippines
Figure 1 describes the perception of the Filipinos on the authoritarian way of governing a country. As
can be seen, the idea that usually goes inside one individual s mind is that
Authoritarianism means having no equal rights having 33.3% making it the majority in the
respondents answers. Having fear and violence and making the decision making of a government
faster and efficient ties at third most perceived idea of Authoritarianism with both having 20% from
the respondents answers. The majority of the answers by the respondents are the bad ideas and traits
that are stereotypically embedded in the term Authoritarianism. It can be seen that the Filipinos will

The results in Figure 1 state that majority of the Filipino respondents see Authoritarianism as a
government system that does not promote equal rights. Therefore, it can be assumed that majority of
the Filipinos believe in the bad ideas and traits that are stereotypically embedded in the term
Authoritarianism. In relation to this it can be explained through the numerous influences that affect the
perspective of the Filipinos as a whole nation. About forty three years ago, the
Philippines experienced the Authoritarian government when the late president Ferdinand Marcos
declared Proclamation No. 1081. He pointed out on the lack of discipline of the Philippine society just
to give justifications for imposing the Martial Law. According to David (2011), the imposition of
Martial Law brought about numerous bad effects on the country and bad perceptions on its people. It
brought fear to the whole nation because the soldiers or the policemen could pick up anybody at any
given time even on the absence of the warrant of arrest.
A simple protest against the government may bring too much chaos during that time. There

Broken Spring Research Paper
What To Know About Broken Garage Door Springs
A broken garage door spring is a major inconvenience. The spring is what lifts the heavy door, so
without it your door will probably be stuck in the down position. A broken spring is also dangerous, so
you don t want to repair it yourself. Here are some things to know about garage door springs.
How Long Springs Last
Garage door springs are rated according to the number of cycles they should operate. If you know how
many times the door should open and close before the springs wear out and the number of times you
open the door daily, then you can work out the life expectancy of the springs. However, things can cut
the life expectancy short. For instance, if the bearings or rollers stick and don t

Abstract: In this experiment we were provided a cereal box spectrometer to observe the emission lines
of noble gases and hydrogen. Based on the scale readings on the spectrometer and the Balmer Rydberg
formula, their wavelengths and percent error were able to be extrapolated. Based on the literature
values, the cereal box spectrometer proved its value as a decently accurate spectrometer.
Introduction: Every element and subsequent atom associated emits light; also know as electromagnetic
radiation, when in an excited state. Analyzing this emitted light can give insight to the makeup and

reading and colors were then recorded on table 1.1 which can be found below. These values where
then put into an excel spreadsheet and graph was formed (table 1.2). An equation was then
extrapolated from the data that would give the experimental wavelength (expt λ) values that will be
used for later values. The trend line for table 1.2 was established to see the relationship between
wavelength and scale readings.
Expt λ=a λ+b

Stereotypes In Zootopia
Most people think of small animals, such as sheep, as meek and submissive due to their frequent
portrayal as innocent characters in children s stories and folklore; in these same stories, antagonistic
characters tend to be fiercer animals such as lions or wolves. However, the children s movie Zootopia,
in which all characters are mammals, shows that this is not always the case. The characters in this film
break the stereotypes against them by being different or the opposite of what the audience expects
based on their species or occupation within the film. For instance, Judy Hopps solves the case on the
missing mammals and why they went savage despite being a dumb bunny , and Nick Wilde turns from
a sly con artist to the first fox cop. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She achieves this, however, in her very corrupt method of making every predator go savage and using
fear to control the public. When Bellwether s true identity is revealed to Judy and Nick, she expresses
that she intends to make prey oppose predators by making the citizens believe that predators are going
back to their primitive ways as hunters. She also admits that her plan was to assume power over
Zootopia by framing Mayor Lionheart and become mayor. Judy tells her it would not work, to which
Bellwether replies, Fear always works. And I ll dart every predator in Zootopia to keep it that way
(Zootopia). As an assistant mayor and a mayor, Bellwether seemed to have worked purely on good
intentions, such as when she had helped Judy and Nick find where Manchas went on the traffic
cameras, or when she tried to make Judy the face of the Zootopia police force as a heroic symbol for
the scared public. This is the typical expectation most people have for sheep characters. However,
Bellwether breaks this stereotype and strives to obtain power as mayor of Zootopia through her

Comparing Xenophon s Testimony And Aristophanes
There are many differences between Xenophon s testimony and Aristophanes. Through the text we
learn that Socrates humiliated Aristophanes, therefore his negative description of Socrates might not
be true. On the other hand we have Xenophon s testimony of Socrates describing him as helpful
(Navia 48). We also learn that Xenophon was not that clever himself which may have lead to why he
idolized Socrates so much. The text states that Xenophon was a military man, not very liberally
endowed with brains and that his relationship with Socrates is comparable to that between a stupid
man and a clever man . (Navia 48) Xenophon clearly admired Socrates. He thought of him as someone
who is very wise, helpful, and that did not

Essay on MADD, A Driving Force for Change
M.A.D.D. is a political interest group for all mothers against drunk driving. It was specifically created
for mothers of kids who have fallen victim to drunk drivers, whether it be in injury or in death.
Founded on September 5th 1980, M.A.D.D. has made a huge impact on the government today and an
even bigger impact on society. The idea of M.A.D.D. was first introduced by a mother, Candice
Lightner, who lost her thirteen year old daughter in a car accident killed by an intoxicated driver. She
took action and initiative after the loss of her daughter to help prevent drunk driving accidents so other
parents wouldn t have to go through the grief of the loss of a loved one, especially their son or
daughter. Whether it be spreading awareness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of their efforts were supported and encouraged by the government, government corporations,
educators, the public and the media. The mothers mission statement was also officially changed in
1999 in order to put focus on preventing underage drinking. The mission of Mothers Against Drunk
Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage
drinking was then the new mission of M.A.D.D. and is still used to this day. In the year 2000,
M.A.D.D. was nationally recognized for supporting the law that the legal limit of driving while
intoxicated should be lowered from .10 to .08. The law was passed in 2005 by congress all throughout
the United States, making the chance of an intoxicated person driving and injuring themselves or
others much lower. Also, as the result of lobbying and M.A.D.D. s efforts in changing the law, the
state of California also passed a law that enhanced the penalties and fines for re offenses of DUI
charges as well as prevented minors from purchasing alcohol. Five different bills have been signed to
add weight to the DUI charges, as well as prevent minors from obtaining fake ID s by cracking down
on security measures and rules in liquor stores. In the state of Rhode Island, M.A.D.D. is spreading the
petition to encourage the police to enforce sobriety checkpoints. They argue that the checkpoints are a

Henry David Thoreau, Walden, and Transcendental Values for...
Henry David Thoreau was testing transcendental values when he took up residence at Walden Pond in
1845. During his time of simple living at the pond, he studied nature and applied those observations to
humans and everyday life. He was always learning from the woods, pond, meadows and animals in
the natural world around him. Nature was his classroom and everything was an opportunity to learn.
In Thoreau s book, Walden , written at the pond, he theorized that education could come through an
intimacy with nature and the end of education would come with death. Even while Thoreau was young
he never agreed with a traditional classroom setting. Attending Harvard corrupted his belief of the
current education system. In his eyes, school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dewey believes that in today s education system, the teacher s business is to hold the pupils up to
requirements and to punish the inevitable deviations which occur, (Democracy and Education).
Thoreau sought to reform the educational system through outdoor observations.
Working outside the classroom, taking lessons from nature is very important to Thoreau. Throughout
Walden his transcendental educational values are shown. In the second chapter, Where I Lived and
what I Lived For he begins an education theme. His goal for living in the wood is to learn and strive
for enlightenment. He went so far as to say, see if I could not learn what [nature] had to teach, and not,
when I came to die, discover that I had not lived (Walden). Thoreau wanted to find the truths of life
and the only way that could happen is to become close to nature. He takes every opportunity to
observe nature. While observing a war between two races of ants on his wood pile and an ignorant ant
couple nearby, he takes note on the behavioral similarity to the human race. This alludes to the thought
that Thoreau held regarding the Mexican American War which is that that atrocities occurred while
others remained unaffected. Thoreau may be expressing that there is a lot more to these seemingly
simple observations than is immediately apparent. He is demonstrating that nature, if studied and
reflected upon, can teach

What the security issues are related to Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks are very important in everyday life. This new technology is exciting with
unlimited potential for numerous application areas including environmental, medical, military,
transportation, entertainment, emergency management and homeland defence. WSN are connected

An extension of this approach is in network aggregation which aggregates data progressively as it is
passed through a network. In network data aggregation can reduce the data packet size, the number of
data transmissions and the number of nodes involved in gathering data from a WSN. Therefore, in the
field of WSNs, privacy preserving data aggregation is becoming a hot issue in WSNs. To address this
issue, some protocols have been proposed. In this, they provide a comprehensive summary and
comparison of the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs. WSN is related to
privacy preserving data aggregation protocols (Ping et al 2012). In the authors reviewed privacy
preserving techniques for protecting two types of private information: data oriented and context
oriented privacy. First, authors focuses only on data privacy in order to provide detailed overviews of
the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs (Ping et al 2012). Two main
security challenges in secure data aggregation are confidentiality and integrity of data (Sugandhi et al
2013). While traditionally encryption is used to provide end to end confidentiality in Wireless Sensor
Network (WSN), the aggregators in a secure data aggregation scenario need to decrypt the encrypted
data to perform aggregation. Thus, while data aggregation improves energy efficiency of a network, it
complicates the existing

American Bar Association Essay Topics
The American Bar Association By James R. Silkenat The original Constitution of the American Bar
Association defined the purpose of the ABA as being for the advancement of the science of
jurisprudence, the promotion of the administration of justice and a uniformity of legislation
throughout the country.... While this Constitution still considerably shapes the focus of the ABA,
today s legal profession is very different from what it was when the ABA was first formed 137 years
ago in Saratoga Springs, New York. When 75 lawyers from 20 states and the District of Columbia met
to establish the American Bar Association on August 21, 1878, there was no national code of ethics.
Most lawyers practiced solo. There were no universal standards for law schools, since most lawyers
did not have law degrees and attending law school at that time was rare. Young lawyers learned their
craft through apprenticeships and by reading classic legal texts. Improving diversity within the
profession was almost certainly not a topic of conversation. Today, the ABA is as committed as ever to
improving the justice system and the law. It works to serve its members, the legal profession, and the
public by defending liberty and pursuing justice as the national voice of the legal profession. The ABA
achieves its mission through four goals, as evidenced on the organization s website: Goal I: Serve Our
Members. Objective: 1. Provide benefits, programs and services which promote members professional

Mary S. Paul s Impact On Child Labor
To begin, the Industrial Revolution ushered the world into an unprecendented era of innovation and
production. In order to keep up the factories and continue to manufacture goods faster than ever
before, children were forced to enter the workplace at extremely young ages. As a consequence, these
children often had to quit their schooling in order to earn money for their families. We have few
objective facts on what happened to the children forced to work in factories, and so we must compile
what information we have on the topic and find the differences and similarities in each in order to
piece together the truth. Thus, by comparing and contrasting the letter and the two photographs, we
will be able to learn more about child labor conditions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both pictures involve subjects who are directly looking into the camera, contrasting the information
given in the letter. When a viewer looks at such an image, they have no way of not looking at the
subject directly in the eye. As a result, this makes the viewer have a deep, emotional response when
they look at the two pictures as the children in those two sources seem more real and lifelife. The
viewer is morel likely to relate to the visual sources as they are more realistic and visual evidence is
harder to dispute than written evidence. The same is not true for the first source, or the letter written
by Mary S. Paul. In it, Paul states, Tell Harriet that though she does not hear from me she is not
forgotten, referring to another, Harriet, that the reader does not know (Letter from Mary Paul).
Consequently, this makes the reader feel alienated as they do not understand the reference and
hampers their view on the topic. Therefore, the two picture sources make the reader have a deeper
emotional response compared to the alientation felt by the reader of Mary s letter in the first

The Influence Of Music On The Music Industry
Music has always had an effect on people on their culture. From Jazz in the 1920 s to Rap just starting
up in the late 1980 s. Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre is
specific to any culture. There are a variety of people that are affected by various genres of music that
you would least expect and it s helping expand the music industry greatly. I believe the most
influential genre of music in my opinion is Hip Hop/Rap.
Hip Hop/Rap started from block parties in New York City in the late 70 s. MC s paid DJ s to introduce
them to crowds and to also to keep the crowds pumped up and entertained. The DJ s came into play
after each song and they were the ones to try and get the crowd involved and keep them entertained.
The Sugarhill Gang s Rapper s Delight, released in 1979 and Kurtis Blow s The Breaks, released in
1980 opened up the Hip Hop industry and really got things going for Rap. Kurtis Blows song hit top 5
and it also went gold. Hip hop and Rap started as a voice for the African American community but
quickly came to represent an entire generation. From these humble beginnings almost 40 years ago, a
multi billion dollar industry has grown.
However, this musical genre has not come without its challenges. In the 90 s Rap in the United States
was strongly divided between East Coast and West Coast Rappers.West Coast came out swinging first
when Ice T released a song 6 in the mornin which was considered the first gangsta rap song

Key Characteristics Of Data Warehouse By William H. Immon
Data warehouse does not mean just place for store data or save historical record of data, the form of

Data warehouse was founded by William H. Immon and he defines it as subject oriented, integrated,
nonvolatile, time variant collection of data organized to support management needs The major of
subjects is arranged in data warehouse. For example, inventory, products and customer, to get more
benefits form data warehouse it must be integrated by collecting from databases across enterprises, the
information for customers should have code or described specifically according to departments. All
departments the procedures on database are updated on a regular basis with deletion, insertion and
changes. The operations that only be in data warehouse the data can be loaded and the data can be
accessed. Once whole data forms and models are recorded, the data can not change. The design of
retrospective data warehousing is traditional, and many questions before starting design to be work as
required. What we sale? What will be the importance of our debt in the next six months? Where is the

Application, And Assessment Of Current And Projected...

Proposition 3: Teachers motivate, manage, and monitor student learning.
Indicator 3b: Teachers manage the learning environment by engaging students and organizing
instruction.
Indicator 3c: Teachers use multiple methods of for monitoring and measuring student understanding
and make informed decisions about instruction.
After examining the Understanding by Design framework by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, I have
learned how to develop a unit by working backwards. The development of a unit is multi layered in its
focus on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. In planning I need to first assess what the big ideas
are that I want my students to learn and why they are important. In our study of Mesopotamia, we look
at how our world began with the first civilization and the achievements that led to advances
throughout history. The big ideas framed as understandings that I want my students to know are that
the locations of civilizations and city states in relation to specific landforms affect development and
technology achievements can benefit society in a variety of areas. Then I look at what essential
questions are raised and what I want students to know and be able to do. The framework looks to
deepen student understanding and transfer that understanding of knowledge and skill into a
performance task and other evidence of formative and summative

Norway is a country located in northern Europe in a region called Scandinavia. Norway is situated on
the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula. Norway s broad coastline is bathed on three sides by
the seas. To the north lies the Barents Sea, an extension of the Arctic Ocean. To the south sits the
Skagerrak, a strait separating Norway from Denmark and the North Sea. To the west is the Norwegian

Wright, E. (2006) gives an historical account based on the archaeological records which indicate that
the earliest peoples migrated there over the extensive glaciers that once buried the region. At the end
of the last ice age, the glaciers receded exposing more of the landmass freeing additional resources.
This allowed for rapid settlement of Germanic, Gaul, and Roman tribes. These tribes migrated
throughout the region into the mountains and fjords which formed natural boundaries for those settled
areas. By the 8th century there were some 29 small kingdoms that existed in Norway. Because of
Norway s rugged terrain, transportation by water is still vitally important. However, Norway continues
to expand its road network and railways to permit greater access into the country s interior granting
more efficient transportation methods. This has allowed the citizens of Norway to spread or migrate to
areas that were previously inaccessible.
Because Norway has an extensive border neighboring Sweden, Finland, and Russia, immigration has

CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility is a very important keyword for companies these days.
Consumers are being more and more aware and conscious about where their clothes come from and
how they are made. Consumers also put a lot of thought into where their food comes from, and how it
has been produced and treated before it is served at the dinner table. With other words, consumers are
demanding better quality and greater responsibility from the companies, than ever before. The

Becoming A Knights Essay
The knights were the third level of feudal society in Europe. Knights were usually vassals who paid
protection and loyalty to their lords in return for land. They were warriors in armor who fought on
horseback and had to have a good deal of wealth in order to afford a full suit of armor and a horse.
Knights wore coats of armor made from metal links called mail and carried swords and shields. A
knight s tactic when fighting in war was that he would charge at his enemies then spear them with his
lance. During the time period of AD 700s to AD 1200s, the knights were the most powerful soldiers in
Europe. Becoming a knight in Europe was a very tough task that started at a very young age. In the
beginning of the dreadful path to becoming a knight, a boy was served as a servant that was also

A page at a young age learned how to ride a horse and received religious instruction from the local
priest or friar. Pages mostly spent their times with the ladies of the castle during the first stage of
knight training. They had to help the ladies in every way possible. In return, ladies taught the pages
how to sing, dance, compose music, and play the harp, which were skills valued in knights. The young
boy then became a squire after seven years of being a page. In this part of training, the young boy
spent most of his time with the knight who was his lord instead of the ladies. With the knight, he
polished the armor, sword, shield, and lance. The young boy also then helped care for the knight s
horse and even waited on him at mealtime, carrying water for hand washing and filling his empty cup.
Besides the fact of serving the knight who was his lord, the squire trained to become warriors. During
this part of the training, the squire learned how to fight with a sword and a lance, which was a type of
spear that was up to fifteen feet long. Also, the squire was taught how to use a battle axe and a

How Is Hester Prynne Cruel
In the classic novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, protagonist Hester Prynne gives birth
to an illegitimate daughter and is forced to wear the letter A on her breast stitched in scarlet and gold
as punishment. She keeps the father, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, a secret even after questioning.
This leaves him burdened by the guilt he feels for not serving the same punishment as her. Meanwhile
Roger Chillingworth, her husband, enters town as the new physician and looks for revenge.
Hawthorne s work repeatedly portraits Hester as a victim of overly harsh punishment and unfair
expectations, in this case based on sexuality, made at the hands of a patriarchal society. Hester Prynne
is a victim of unduly extreme discipline for her act of adultery. She is sentenced to a lifetime of
wearing a beautifully stitched letter A on whatever she wore and three hours of standing on the town s
scaffold to be publicly shamed. Statements like they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester
Prynne s forehead (Hawthorne 60) were uttered of her as she served her punishment. If the lifetime of
humiliation wasn t enough, her child was almost taken from her too. A meeting between Governor
Bellingham, Reverend Wilson, Reverend Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth was held to discuss
the caretaking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Influence Of Lin Vs. Lin On Chinese Foreign Relations
In the 1839 Chinese foreign relations was based on what was good for China. If they were making
profits, everything was peachy. But if more harm was being done than good, the Chinese as Lin Zexu
says, would remove it for the world. China was very strict on Europeans living in China. Emperor
Qian only allowed Europeans that he thought in service of the dynasty to stay, and they must obey
strict rules. Europeans had to adopt Chinese dress, were forced to stay in their designated precincts ,
and were never allowed to return to or communicate with their home country. It was the respect of
these rules by the British rulers, according to Lin that China had welcomed so hospitably trade with
England for last two hundred years. But recently Lin describes a change in the English trade. He
begins to describe this group as barbarians that are interested only in profit, regardless of who they
hurt. they were taking advantage of the Chinese people, something the Chinese government saw as a
huge harm that they needed to remove.
Lin s biggest argument in his letter to Queen Victoria, is China s ability to close their ports. ... Show

taking advantage of the English, driving the message home with a sideways compliment. Lin tells

Comparison Of The Book And Alice In Wonderland

Lewis Caroll was originally published on November 26, 1865. On the other hand, the movie version,
directed by Clyde Geronimo, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske and produced by Walt Disney, was
published in 1951. Carroll s book has twelve chapters and begins by describing a girl who named
Alice that falls down a hole and finds herself in wonderland. In comparison, the movie begins with a
scene not included in the book in which Alice sings about her world, foreshadowing wonderland. In
the beginning, the versions are similar. Alice follows the rabbit because she is bored with her sister
who only wants to read books with pictures. When she follows the rabbit, Alice finds herself in a
different world. The difference is that in the book when Alice comes to the place, she finds the rabbit
and follows him until she sees many doors. In the movie, however, the door talks to her instead. In the
movie Mrs. Doorknob never appears, but the door has magic and gives her a potion bottle and box on
the table. Conversely, in the book the bottle and box are already there. Because she didn t see the two
things, they appear after she talks to the door and he works his magic, and she drinks the potion to
become smaller so she can enter the door. In the second chapter, there are several differences. In the

The nervousness receded as I saw some old teammates. I set my bag down and waited, standing off to
the side of team. Almost too soon the chatter of the group died down and the coach, a small fit man
approached us. He told us to run two miles in under fourteen minutes, which was about six laps

Definition Of Vanity And Pride By Guy De Maupassant
Vanity and Pride by Guy De Maupassant Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are
often used alike. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of us, to
what we would have others think of us . In the story of The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Guy de
Maupassant believes that vanity and pride are dangerous. Pride is a high opinion of one s own worth
or abilities and vanity is a quality of people who have too much pride in their own appearance
abilities, achievements and the quality of being vain. Vanity and pride are dangerous because it can
makes your life miserable and because it s like you re too self centered and you only think about

Reconstruction Of Automobile Destruction Undertaken By...
Overview
The study, Reconstruction of Automobile Destruction undertaken by Loftus Palmer in 1974 consisted
of two experiments, these experiments were completed in order to test their hypothesis that the way in
which a question about an eyewitness testimony was asked can change the recollection of events
perceived by the witness . The study served to aid the argument that memory can be altered and
distorted when they subject is presented with new information that is given prior to the event. In order
to test their hypothesis, Loftus Palmer conducted two laboratory experiments; both experiments took
the design of an independent measures. The first experiment consisted of a group of 45 students who
were shown footage of car accidents, following each film questionnaires were answered. The critical
question from this questionnaire was in regards to the speed at which the car was travelling. In this
question the verb used to describe the actions changed, meaning this was the independent variable.
The results of this question varied depending on the verb used. With the highest mean speed being for
the word smashed and the lowest for the verb contacted . The dependent variable in this experiment
was the estimated mean speed.
The second experiment differed in that it had a sample size of 150 students, they were divided into
groups of 50. Again the groups were shown footage of car accidents however in this experiment one
group of 50 were asked how fast the cars were

Taxes On Land And Property Essay
Taxes on land and property have both fiscal and non fiscal effects. The revenue such taxes produce is
often an important source of finance for local governments. The extent to which those governments
have control over property taxes is thus often an important determinant of the extent to which they are
able to make autonomous expenditure decisions. The level, design, and control of property taxation
are thus, in many countries, critical elements in effective decentralization policy.
But property taxes are not always local taxes, and whether they are or are not local, like all taxes they
must also be considered from a more general policy perspective. From this perspective, property taxes
may be viewed, depending upon one s assumptions, the environment in which they are applied, and
their design and effectiveness, as an equitable and efficient way of raising revenue or they may be
considered to be a regressive and undesirable form of public finance.
A large number of studies have shown that;
1. Property taxes are generally heavier on non residential (and especially commercial) properties than
on residential (single family) homes.
2. When there is considerable local discretion with respect to property taxes, there are also likely to be
great differences in effective tax rates.
In the instant case, we will discuss the system of taxation on the returns on property holding as
prevalent in the USA and evaluate its effect on, equity, housing prices, and the economy.

Minimum Driving Age Should Not Be Raised To 18 Essay
The big one six is an age kids look forward to their whole lives. A new found freedom teens gain when
turning sixteen is driving. Driving is a privilege and an incentive for teens, and driving opens up a
world of opportunities to young adults. Some people think teens are too immature to drive and should
wait until adulthood, however the minimum driving age should not be raised from sixteen to eighteen.
Sixteen should be the age to drive because parents cannot run teens everywhere, eighteen is a very
busy age, and not all teens are immature. Moms and dads have a very busy schedule. When teens

The false assumptions people have about teens is unfair to the teens who are actually responsible. I as
a teen understand how dangerous driving is and how I am responsible for my passengers lives while at
the wheel. Why should the driving privilege given to teens at sixteen be changed because of a few bad
kids? People need not to have a bad outlook on teens just because some teens are infact immature, but
some adults are not very mature either. Teens just need to not be stereotypes then teenagers would not
have any excuse to act up if people expected more out of them. Sixteen year olds are perfectly capable
of driving, and the new found responsibility could even make teens act more mature. Busy parents, a
busy young adult life, and mature teens are why the legal driving age should not be raised to the
minimum age of eighteen. Sixteen is a traditional milestone in a teens life, why would one want to
take that tradition away? All the opportunities sixteen year olds receive driving would be ruined if the
driving age is changes to eighteen, which could also ruin a teens future. Driving is an American rite of
passage and the system for it is fine just the way it is. Let s keep the age sixteen sweet and leave the

Symbolism In Tangerine By Edward Bloor
Every day, people often get themselves in positions where they are presented with appearance known
to be deceptive. Based on the appearance, a false truth hides beneath an exceptional display. People,
objects, and buildings are entirely taken by people s perspectives. This is the theme that the book
Tangerine illustrates. The novel Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor, is about Paul Fisher, a boy
having to go through many situations where a false reality surrounds his life. Bloor uses Erik Fisher
and the Tangerine County to reveal that reality is often far from what it appears to be. The first symbol
Edward Bloor uses is Erik Fisher. Erik Fisher is a high school football star without impaired vision
unlike his brother, Paul (Burch 27). As Paul finds out, his eyes were damaged from Erik. Paul states, I
remembered Erik s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them
(255). This shows that Paul did not realize the dark past behind his disability and that Erik could have
done such a thing to him since Erik s external shape is much clearer than the looking of himself.
Another reality behind Erik s typical appearance is that he orders his sidekick, Arthur Bauer to murder
Luis Cruz (275). Not even enough with this, Erik stoles the jewelry from his neighborhood ... Show

The Consequences Of The Truman Doctrine
The foreign policy of the United States can be defined as a labyrinth a set of complex intricacies
which either lack comprehension or are characterized by meticulous thought. Established during a
period of ideological warfare and domestic hysteria, it is evident the Truman Doctrine was conceived
with a disregard for the future stability of American international affairs. Engulfed within a period
marked by massive power struggles and distorted accusations, the Truman Doctrine may appear
minimal in regard to alterations of the United States international attitude. However, the Doctrine
acted as a catalyst for the shift in America s foreign policy objectives and vision. It is clear the Truman
Doctrine produced detrimental consequences in regard to the international policy of the United States,
stability of foreign countries, and continuing repercussions in the modern day. Following the Allies
victory in World War II, and preceding the historical period of the Red Scare, relations between the
Soviet Union and the United States were relatively neutral (in spite of the drastically different
ideological viewpoints). Contrary to popular belief the Doctrine was originally constructed to quell
communist uprisings, it is clear the intention was to establish stability within European nations vital to
the economic interests of the United States (Gaddis 11). As domestic tidings began to alter as a result
of the Red Scare, the Doctrine would become a stigma for ideological conflict

passing of Frederic Ozanam s siblings made him doubt about his Christian faith at a young age. He
realized that although prayers were necessary to communicate with God, actions might make a bigger
difference in the society (Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, 2013). During his years at the University of the
Sorbonne in Paris, Frederic Ozanam studied law and he also defended the Catholic teachings when
some of his teachers were being disrespectful to this religion. He was not only a brilliant student but
also a very caring and responsible young adult (Schimberg, 1946). When he observed the miserable
life of many Paris people, he decided to help the poor in Paris who were living in tenements. Frederic
Ozanam was inspired to praise the lord through actions at a discussion club where people from
different religious background talk about the issues happening around the world (Blessed Frédéric
Ozanam, 2013). He realized that actions are bigger than words, and it is through actions that people
can be saved. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul, Frederic Ozanam organized a group of students who were
deeply devoted to their Christian belief and would like to sacrifice their time to help and respect the
poor while providing the best service they could. Under the leadership of Frederic Ozanam, the
students started the Conference of Charity , and later the name changed into the Conference of St.
Vincent de Paul in 1834. They met every week to contribute to a secret collection and then they would
go visit the least fortunate communities in Paris to distribute the goods that they collected (St. Vincent

Torrance And Creativity
Dr. Torrance and Creativity
Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was a very creative individual whose work with the aging population he has
influenced program offerings at Kansas State University. The objectives of this paper include
discussing Dr. Torrance s background, a reflection of his work in creativity, how his work has
influenced program offerings, and how Dr. Torrance s work could impact our work with aging. Lastly,
I will discuss what I have learned from studying him.
Dr. Ellis Paul Torrance was born in 1915 to a farming family in rural Georgia (Childs, 2013). He
started school late, at age seven due to a learning disability, but through encouragement from teachers
and family, Dr. Torrance became an avid reader and writer, often winning writing ... Show more

He noticed that students labeled as difficult may actually have creative potential that just hadn t been
tapped into (Bert 2012). With further research, education, and as a counselor and psychologist in the
US Army, Dr. Torrance began his life long interest and journey into creativity (Bert 2012). In 1946,
after leaving the Army, Torrance started his career at Kansas State College in the counseling bureau
where soon after he was transitioned into the role of Dean of Men and a few years later returned as
Director of the Counseling Bureau and professor of psychology (Bert 2002). In 1951, he was
appointed Director of Survival Research in the Air Force, and in1957 he developed a definition of
survival creativity, whenever one is faced with a problem for which he has no practiced or learned
solution, some degree of creativity is required (Millar, 1995). During his time at the Air Force, he
wrote 135 research papers with his colleagues on survival and creativity and began designing
creativity tests (Bert, 2002). His research studies continued and he began to publish books and more
research studies(Childs, 2013). As a professor of educational psychology at the University of Georgia,
he invented the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking setting the standard for measuring creativity
(Bert, 2002). He also developed the Future Problem Solving Program, which is known all over the
world (Bert, 2002). Throughout his long career, Dr. Torrance authored over 2000 books and research
articles, and was a much sought after speaker and lecturer (Childs,

Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD) Program Equity and Effectiveness
Introduction
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a program that, like its name
suggests, has the main objective of reducing the emission levels of green house gases from land uses,
through incentives in developing countries. The program includes measures related to conservation,
sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change 2008).
It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has
been discussed, and in the climate change picture REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and
dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people
how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other
environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and feasibility. Given its potential importance to the
global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic
magnitudes of REDD.
REDD is an initiative with a variety of features. It does not involve only local management and
impacts, but rather does include a global effort and integration of public and private sectors. It is
important to think about all the management levels, all impacts and consequences of the program,
risks, applicability, benefit and cost and so

Effects of Business Cycles
Introduction In general the economy tends to experience different trends. These trends can be grouped
as the business/trade cycle and may contain a boom, recession, depression and recovery. A
business/trade cycle (see figure 1) is the periodic but irregular up and down movements in economic
activity, measured by fluctuations in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other macroeconomic
variables. Samuelson and Nordhaus (1998), defined it as a swing in total national input, income and
employment, usually lasting for a period of 2 to 10 years, marked by widespread expansion or
contraction in most sectors of the economy . These fluctuations in economic activity usually have
implications on employment, consumption, business confidence, ... Show more content on

USA budget deficit, which for 2006 fell to $247.7 billion, the lowest in four years is of much concern.
The September 11 terrorism attacks has aided to the retrenchment of economic activity and this has
also affected the level of confidence in businesses and consumers. In 2000, consumer debt growth of
8.6% compared with real disposable income growth of 4.8%. During the first quarter of 2006, private
household debt grew to 11.6% annually compared with zero real disposable income growth. The
thriving technology in the USA led to a large number of investment in information processing
equipment and software resulting in high equity values which also resulted in a decline by the second
quarter of 2000. In October 2001employment fell by 439,000 jobs, and unemployment rate soared
from 4.9% to 5.4%. Over 500,000 jobs were lost in the recession and a further one million jobs were
destroyed in the weak job loss recovery from November 2001 to June 2003. People who lived below
the poverty line jumped from 31.06 million to 34.06 million by 2002. This recession could have been
avoided, however the argument against government intervention using discretionary fiscal policy to
tackle recession accentuates the long time lags involved in altering fiscal policy in USA. There was
proof in 2000 that the USA economy was slowing. Congress passed a tax cut in 2001, but it took
Congress until March 2002 to pass the Economy Recovery Act to provide further inducement to the

How Human Memories Work
How Human Memories Work
Have you ever forgotten something that you wish you could remember? Or you re someone who puts
something down in a safe place where you will remember where it s at then forget where that safe
place was? Are you one of those people who everyone remembers something you said or did but you
have no idea what they are talking about because you can t seem to remember it ever happening. You
might just think that you have a bad memory but that isn t the case. There s actually no such thing as a
having a bad memory . In your brain you have about one billion neurons which lead into forming
about one thousand connections just for one neuron. So in the long run you have about a trillion

When a person has something that may have cause physical symptoms or a traumatic event happen to
them in their life they can continue to re experience these things. Unfortunately, some people re
experience the memories of traumatizing events for years after the fact. It s common to experience a
biological response when these memories play out, including heart palpitations and shortness of
breath.(Cancio, 2011) When a person has a memory that they want to forget they are actually shutting
down the region of the brain that would bring it from coming into consciousness. But one side effect
would be that whatever was tied to the memory you forgot the traces of it you wouldn t be able to
remember as easily. The important things are encoded so they are read more easily and effectively
then things that you want to remember every once in awhile. After a person stops revisiting a memory
it becomes harder and harder for them to remember the little things of it. When someone forgets where
they put something it is simply because your brain was distracted while the encoding process should
have taken place. For example when someone had forgotten where they put their eyeglasses they may
have not forgotten where it was but they may have never actually stored the place of the glasses in
their memories. Emotional events are often remembered better because they have a greater

Three Rules Of Constraint Management And Supply Chain...
2.4 CONSTRAINT MANAGEMENT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT What is Constraint
Management? Constraint management is a tool that supervisors and other management personnel use
to help employees sustain task focus. According to Goal Systems International, a Washington based
business consulting firm, constraint management try to help employees and supervisors remain locked
in on the most important element of business success: system constraints. These constraints, or basic
conditions to accomplishment a goal, differ by business and can include meeting manufacturing
output quotas, completing products in a well timed manner or obtaining particular customer
satisfaction scores on product surveys. Constraint management believes that losing focus on these key
essentials can facing disaster for a workforce and the business as a whole. The constraint management
model recognizes performance standards for employees and try to improve operational efficiency. A
business is using constraint management requires structured schedules for assembling raw materials,
creating products and distributing products to consumers. Performed properly, this model of
management can significantly improve the lag time between steps in a company s production process.

The Culture of Tuscany during the Renaissance
The culture of Tuscany during the renaissance was distinguished by its fine arts caused by the Roman
Empire taking over of Constantinople, which brought Greek knowledge of math, science, architecture,
and the arts to the Tuscan region. In this particular time period, (1429 1519) if it were not for the
introduction of new understandings in math and science, the Tuscans would not have had the
advancements in art and architecture we use to this day. To further expand on this topic, we must look
into additional aspects of Tuscany s culture including geography, work, folkways, and religion.
Tuscany is a fairly large region, compared to others in the middle left of Italy. It is surrounded by the
Tyrrhenian sea to the southwest, and the Apennines along the northeastern border. Tuscany has a
climate of extremes. It has all four seasons, but to extremes. It has very hot summers and fairly cold
winters, along with general clouds but little rain, due to mostly the geography of its location. Most of
the buildings had extreme mathematical alignments, in a grid fashion. Most of the buildings were
made of Stone, Stucco and some clay. The streets were in two semicircles divided by the Arno River.
The streets were aligned in a web pattern, surrounded by the mighty city walls. They had a lot of
natural water from the Tyrrhenian sea, and the various rivers, such as the famous Arno river that cuts
the city of Tuscany in two, having a source at the top of the apennine mountains, generally.

World War II And Japan
World War II and Japan The Greater Japanese Empire was one of the fastest growing and most
dominant world powers of the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. After being created as a result of the Meiji
Restoration of 1868, the Empire of Japan grew quite well and prospered until it was dissolved in 1947.
Although Japan experienced a long period of economic strife, massive destruction and a switch from a
military to a consumer based economy, after World War II, the country emerged stronger than ever and
became a serious player on the world economic stage. While scholars have debated World War II s
impact on Japan s economy, ultimately WWII allowed Japan to emerge with adaptive and innovative
manufacturing capabilities. Japan occupied Vietnam and joined the Axis Powers in 1940, which led to
an oil boycott from the United States and Great Britain (Ike 5). In 1941 Japan captured the Dutch East
Indies, and after the December attack on Pearl Harbor, they were officially at war with the Allied
Powers in the Second World War. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in over 2,400 American deaths
and four sunken ships. On the same day, Japan initiated the Southern Expansion, which was a massive
invasion of Guam, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, in addition to a few other East Asian territories
(Kato 57). During the next few months Japan was able to deliver a series of blows to Allied forces in
the region by taking over American bases and sinking British ships. Japan s momentum began to

Individualistic Qualities Of Characters In Joseph Heller s...
The characters of Catch 22 each had individualistic qualities that gave more meaning to the novel.
They added to the central message of the novel which focuses on the shortcomings of human nature
with Joseph Heller s clever use of intricate, supporting characters. Many characters reminded me of
songs, particularly Hungry Joe, Major Major Major Major, and Colonel Cathcart. Hungry Joe is a
bomber of the 256th bombing squadron. He has completed the number of missions several times and
is shell shocked, similar to ptsd, from knowing he can t go home. He is always trying to photograph
nude women claiming that before the war, he was a photographer for Life Magazine reacting to them
as sexual beings was one of frenzied worship and idolatry (6.8). ... Show more content on

He has raised the number of missions needed to go home from 45 to 80. If a soldier does reach the
goal, Colonel Cathcart simply commands them to stay since all soldiers must listen to their
commanding officer. As the reader continues, it becomes clear that his desperation to be protomed to a
general is the cause for his many irrational judgments. This includes ruining Major Major s life by
promoting him in front of his friends and dismissing the chaplain s pleas to fix issues within the
soldiers. When faced with any setbacks such as McWatt s suicide, Doc Daneeka s apparent death, and
Milo s disloyalty, raising the number of required mission is his method of relieving the issue. In short,
he does not care that his actions endanger his mens lives and he does not honor the bond between
soldiers and their officers. Every action is designed to please and impress his superiors as well as the
public. In chapter 19, Colonel Cathcart and the chaplain discuss group prayers before each mission.
The colonel s motive is to get his name in the Saturday Evening Post, desiring fame and recognition.
He also wanted to exclude any mention religion: Haven t you got anything humorous that stays away
from waters and valleys and God? I d like to keep away from the subject of religion altogether if we
can (ch19). This shows that Colonel Cathcart is only using in religion as a tool for his own
advancement. Actual faith has nothing to

The Anna Karenina Principle
The Anna Karenina principle is important because it explains a feature of animal domestication that
had heavy consequences for human history. Specifically how suitable big wild mammals were never
domesticated and most domesticated animals are Eurasian. The Anna Karenina principle directly
applies to domesticating animals because to be domesticated, a species must possess many different
characteristics, as there must be many characteristics of happiness in the principle. Diamond states
that lack of any characteristic dooms efforts at domestication. The Anna Karenina principle applies
directly to the domestication of animals, making it relevant in understanding why some wild animals
were not domesticated.
By comparing mutations, one can see that a crop was independently domesticated in separate areas.
This is suggested if a crop includes two or more alternative wild variants, or mutations. It is suggested
because if the same crop has many different variants, it inherited one particular mutation from one
area and the other mutation was inherited from a different area. This information is important to
tracing the spread of agriculture because it can suggest that a crop spread very quickly to the
surrounding area (one mutation), preventing the need of independently growing the crop elsewhere.
On the other hand, it can also suggest that a crop spread too slow to prevent its independent
domestication elsewhere.
Civilization led to epidemic because as people started to

Leonora Sutter s Argument Essay Witness
Witness Argument Essay In the story witness the title gives away that there were things that people
saw heard and experienced, some know more than others and that s what makes the story interesting.
One person that witnessed the most was Leonora Sutter.
She was a 12 year old, African American who was engaged with what was happening around her.
Lenora was aware and knew what was going on, which was interesting to know because she is only
12. She knew that in her community there was a big problem with racism. As she quotes in the story, I
made a pie for Mr. Fields, I don t know if he could see me well enough to judge the color of my skin. I
don t know if my color mattered to him. (witness pg41) Leonora is feeling emotions that an adult

It makes you think about if she were to act, feel, and express her feelings in a different way than what
she did in the story, about what could possibly happen and how other characters would react. Leonora
was nice and caring, saying that if she wasn t the nice girl like she was in the story could ve gotten her
in a lot of trouble with the whites. She would ve said things she shouldn t have and did things that
would get herself or others hurt but luckily she was feeling and expressing smart emotions that helped
protect her. If she would have been arrogant she could have possibly said a rude comment to one of
the clan members and that would ve been the end of her. It is a good thing to stand up for yourself but
at this point in time if Leonora was to stand up for herself she could ve gotten in trouble or hurt,
because following along with the story the Klan members don t care about blacks and they won t put
up with anything that is not in their liking. When she got scared in the story she went and hid in the
closet away from the clansmen burning the cross, instead of telling anyone or telling them to go away,
which at the time it was a smart decision to stay back. (Witness pg. 54) Leonora also has a protective
trait which makes her a more helpful selfless person, if she wouldn t have been that way she wouldn t
have saved Esther from being hit by that train.

  • 2. The Search for Enlightenment Essay The Search for Enlightenment Nature, I think we can deduce, refers not only to animals, plants, and mountains, but rather to the universe as a whole the entirety of the physical universe ranging from human nature to quantum nature while also including, plants, animals, and mountains as part of this greater whole. It has been the search for knowledge and truths of the wonders and mysteries of nature, or rather the universe (in other words science) that has, over the past few years been the underlying motivation in my life. Not only do I find the search for knowledge exciting and intellectually stimulating, but I have found that this motivation gives meaning or rather a direction to my life. I don t wish to imply that science and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of science and one that I disagree with. Instead my drive for competency has made science seem attractive, not because it tries to replace God and metaphysical ideology, but rather that it explains the universe without having to rely on untestable assumptions (which we can t know to be true) about how the universe should or would make sense to be. As I believe that there is no God or transcendental explanation for life or the cosmos, I aspire to understand human behavior, not in terms of metaphysical and transcendental explanations, but rather in an empirical approach based on logic, reason, and the consiliecnce (Wilson 1998, p.8) of the sciences and knowledge. Yet, my innate desire for competence leads to another important motivation that affects my being, that is the quest for authenticism. To be authentic, I refer to being original, honest about my thoughts to myself and others; aware and skeptical of the motivation and assumptions of culture and society; attempting to recognize and dissect assumptions of my creation and that of culture and societies; being able to relate to others; and finally, being hyper conscious of myself. By hyper conscious, I refer to the state of consciousness deeper than that of awareness of one s existence, that being the awareness of one s motivations the constant introspection, thought, and questioning of one s actions and ... • 3. The Problem Of The Unhappy Valley Unhappy Valley Everyday humans are faced with dilemmas where they must decide on what considered right, and what is considered wrong. Whether they are fifty or five, all humans face situations like that. There are times when humans make the wrong decision thinking it s right, or make the right decision, but it s wrong. When it comes to making decisions, older generations are held to a higher standard than younger generations. That is because they are expected to be responsible and have had to experience difficult life situations, younger generations are known and expected to make the wrong decisions constantly. But in some cases, adults will make that wrong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film spotlights the wrong decisions, and the justifications that come with them. Bar Lev targets the emotional and logical appeals of his audience while teaching them indirectly on what happened. The rhetoric that is used in Happy Valley appeals the audience s emotional and logical appeals. Throughout the film, Bar Lev introduces important key factors, like Sandusky s adopted son and victim, Matt, Joe Paterno s wife, two of his son s, students of Penn State University in 2011, as well as researchers and historians involved with Penn State. Bar Lev has them open up about their thoughts and feelings on the scandal to focus on how it affected them. Ideally he is affecting the audience s emotions, allowing them to feel as if they are a part of the story too. Likewise, he focuses on the events leading up to the scandal, the scandal, and the aftermath of the scandal. Bar Lev likes to produce stories on the difficult and uncomfortable topics that are hard to talk about. He states in a recent interview, I look for the stories that tweek society s nerves (Bar Lev). Happy Valley, being one of Bar Lev s numerous documentaries, does not create an obvious opinion that he holds, instead leaving it up to the audience and their opinions. They are constantly changing their opinions especially on the late Penn State head football coach, Joe Paterno. Paterno knew about Sandusky s sexual abuse toward the young ... The results in Figure 1 state that majority of the Filipino respondents see Authoritarianism as a government system that does not promote equal rights. Therefore, it can be assumed that majority of the Filipinos believe in the bad ideas and traits that are stereotypically embedded in the term Authoritarianism. In relation to this it can be explained through the numerous influences that affect the perspective of the Filipinos as a whole nation. About forty three years ago, the Philippines experienced the Authoritarian government when the late president Ferdinand Marcos declared Proclamation No. 1081. He pointed out on the lack of discipline of the Philippine society just to give justifications for imposing the Martial Law. According to David (2011), the imposition of Martial Law brought about numerous bad effects on the country and bad perceptions on its people. It brought fear to the whole nation because the soldiers or the policemen could pick up anybody at any given time even on the absence of the warrant of arrest. • 6. Spectroscopy Lab Report cName: Nicholas Cassel Gen Chem 1210 23 March 2013 Blinded By the Light Abstract: In this experiment we were provided a cereal box spectrometer to observe the emission lines of noble gases and hydrogen. Based on the scale readings on the spectrometer and the Balmer Rydberg formula, their wavelengths and percent error were able to be extrapolated. Based on the literature values, the cereal box spectrometer proved its value as a decently accurate spectrometer. With the spectroscope, the helium in the discharge tube was observed. The emission line scale reading and colors were then recorded on table 1.1 which can be found below. An equation was then extrapolated from the data that would give the experimental wavelength (expt λ) values that will be used for later values. The trend line for table 1.2 was established to see the relationship between wavelength and scale readings. • 8. Stereotypes In Zootopia Most people think of small animals, such as sheep, as meek and submissive due to their frequent portrayal as innocent characters in children s stories and folklore; in these same stories, antagonistic characters tend to be fiercer animals such as lions or wolves. However, the children s movie Zootopia, in which all characters are mammals, shows that this is not always the case. The characters in this film break the stereotypes against them by being different or the opposite of what the audience expects based on their species or occupation within the film. For instance, Judy Hopps solves the case on the missing mammals and why they went savage despite being a dumb bunny , and Nick Wilde turns from a sly con artist to the first fox cop. This ... She also admits that her plan was to assume power over Zootopia by framing Mayor Lionheart and become mayor. Judy tells her it would not work, to which Bellwether replies, Fear always works. And I ll dart every predator in Zootopia to keep it that way (Zootopia). As an assistant mayor and a mayor, Bellwether seemed to have worked purely on good intentions, such as when she had helped Judy and Nick find where Manchas went on the traffic cameras, or when she tried to make Judy the face of the Zootopia police force as a heroic symbol for the scared public. This is the typical expectation most people have for sheep characters. However, Bellwether breaks this stereotype and strives to obtain power as mayor of Zootopia through her corrupt ... Through the text we learn that Socrates humiliated Aristophanes, therefore his negative description of Socrates might not be true. On the other hand we have Xenophon s testimony of Socrates describing him as helpful (Navia 48). We also learn that Xenophon was not that clever himself which may have lead to why he idolized Socrates so much. The text states that Xenophon was a military man, not very liberally endowed with brains and that his relationship with Socrates is comparable to that between a stupid man and a clever man . • 10. Essay on MADD, A Driving Force for Change M.A.D.D. is a political interest group for all mothers against drunk driving. It was specifically created for mothers of kids who have fallen victim to drunk drivers, whether it be in injury or in death. Founded on September 5th 1980, M.A.D.D. has made a huge impact on the government today and an even bigger impact on society. The idea of M.A.D.D. was first introduced by a mother, Candice Lightner, who lost her thirteen year old daughter in a car accident killed by an intoxicated driver. She took action and initiative after the loss of her daughter to help prevent drunk driving accidents so other parents wouldn t have to go through the grief of the loss of a loved one, especially their son or daughter. In the year 2000, M.A.D.D. was nationally recognized for supporting the law that the legal limit of driving while intoxicated should be lowered from .10 to .08. The law was passed in 2005 by congress all throughout the United States, making the chance of an intoxicated person driving and injuring themselves or others much lower. Also, as the result of lobbying and M.A.D.D. s efforts in changing the law, the state of California also passed a law that enhanced the penalties and fines for re offenses of DUI charges as well as prevented minors from purchasing alcohol. Five different bills have been signed to add weight to the DUI charges, as well as prevent minors from obtaining fake ID s by cracking down on security measures and rules in liquor stores. • 11. Henry David Thoreau, Walden, and Transcendental Values for... Henry David Thoreau was testing transcendental values when he took up residence at Walden Pond in 1845. During his time of simple living at the pond, he studied nature and applied those observations to humans and everyday life. He was always learning from the woods, pond, meadows and animals in the natural world around him. Nature was his classroom and everything was an opportunity to learn. In Thoreau s book, Walden , written at the pond, he theorized that education could come through an intimacy with nature and the end of education would come with death. Even while Thoreau was young he never agreed with a traditional classroom setting. Attending Harvard corrupted his belief of the current education system. In his eyes, school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dewey believes that in today s education system, the teacher s business is to hold the pupils up to requirements and to punish the inevitable deviations which occur, (Democracy and Education). Thoreau sought to reform the educational system through outdoor observations. Working outside the classroom, taking lessons from nature is very important to Thoreau. Throughout Walden his transcendental educational values are shown. In the second chapter, Where I Lived and what I Lived For he begins an education theme. His goal for living in the wood is to learn and strive for enlightenment. He went so far as to say, see if I could not learn what [nature] had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived (Walden). Thoreau wanted to find the truths of life and the only way that could happen is to become close to nature. He takes every opportunity to observe nature. While observing a war between two races of ants on his wood pile and an ignorant ant couple nearby, he takes note on the behavioral similarity to the human race. This alludes to the thought that Thoreau held regarding the Mexican American War which is that that atrocities occurred while others remained unaffected. Thoreau may be expressing that there is a lot more to these seemingly simple observations than is immediately apparent. He is demonstrating that nature, if studied and reflected upon, can teach ... An extension of this approach is in network aggregation which aggregates data progressively as it is passed through a network. In network data aggregation can reduce the data packet size, the number of data transmissions and the number of nodes involved in gathering data from a WSN. Therefore, in the field of WSNs, privacy preserving data aggregation is becoming a hot issue in WSNs. To address this issue, some protocols have been proposed. In this, they provide a comprehensive summary and comparison of the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs. WSN is related to privacy preserving data aggregation protocols (Ping et al 2012). In the authors reviewed privacy preserving techniques for protecting two types of private information: data oriented and context oriented privacy. First, authors focuses only on data privacy in order to provide detailed overviews of the existing privacy preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs (Ping et al 2012). Two main security challenges in secure data aggregation are confidentiality and integrity of data (Sugandhi et al 2013). While traditionally encryption is used to provide end to end confidentiality in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), the aggregators in a secure data aggregation scenario need to decrypt the encrypted data to perform aggregation. Thus, while data aggregation improves energy efficiency of a network, it complicates the existing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. American Bar Association Essay Topics The American Bar Association By James R. Silkenat The original Constitution of the American Bar Association defined the purpose of the ABA as being for the advancement of the science of jurisprudence, the promotion of the administration of justice and a uniformity of legislation throughout the country.... While this Constitution still considerably shapes the focus of the ABA, today s legal profession is very different from what it was when the ABA was first formed 137 years ago in Saratoga Springs, New York. When 75 lawyers from 20 states and the District of Columbia met to establish the American Bar Association on August 21, 1878, there was no national code of ethics. Most lawyers practiced solo. There were no universal standards for law schools, since most lawyers did not have law degrees and attending law school at that time was rare. Young lawyers learned their craft through apprenticeships and by reading classic legal texts. Improving diversity within the profession was almost certainly not a topic of conversation. Today, the ABA is as committed as ever to improving the justice system and the law. It works to serve its members, the legal profession, and the public by defending liberty and pursuing justice as the national voice of the legal profession. • 16. Mary S. Paul s Impact On Child Labor To begin, the Industrial Revolution ushered the world into an unprecendented era of innovation and production. In order to keep up the factories and continue to manufacture goods faster than ever before, children were forced to enter the workplace at extremely young ages. As a consequence, these children often had to quit their schooling in order to earn money for their families. We have few objective facts on what happened to the children forced to work in factories, and so we must compile what information we have on the topic and find the differences and similarities in each in order to piece together the truth. Thus, by comparing and contrasting the letter and the two photographs, we will be able to learn more about child labor conditions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The viewer is morel likely to relate to the visual sources as they are more realistic and visual evidence is harder to dispute than written evidence. The same is not true for the first source, or the letter written by Mary S. Paul. In it, Paul states, Tell Harriet that though she does not hear from me she is not forgotten, referring to another, Harriet, that the reader does not know (Letter from Mary Paul). Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre is specific to any culture. There are a variety of people that are affected by various genres of music that you would least expect and it s helping expand the music industry greatly. I believe the most influential genre of music in my opinion is Hip Hop/Rap. Hip Hop/Rap started from block parties in New York City in the late 70 s. MC s paid DJ s to introduce them to crowds and to also to keep the crowds pumped up and entertained. The DJ s came into play after each song and they were the ones to try and get the crowd involved and keep them entertained. The Sugarhill Gang s Rapper s Delight, released in 1979 and Kurtis Blow s The Breaks, released in 1980 opened up the Hip Hop industry and really got things going for Rap. Kurtis Blows song hit top 5 and it also went gold. Hip hop and Rap started as a voice for the African American community but quickly came to represent an entire generation. From these humble beginnings almost 40 years ago, a multi billion dollar industry has grown. However, this musical genre has not come without its challenges. In the 90 s Rap in the United States was strongly divided between East Coast and West Coast Rappers.West Coast came out swinging first when Ice T released a song 6 in the mornin which was considered the first gangsta rap song ... • 34. Taxes On Land And Property Essay Taxes on land and property have both fiscal and non fiscal effects. The revenue such taxes produce is often an important source of finance for local governments. The extent to which those governments have control over property taxes is thus often an important determinant of the extent to which they are able to make autonomous expenditure decisions. The level, design, and control of property taxation are thus, in many countries, critical elements in effective decentralization policy. But property taxes are not always local taxes, and whether they are or are not local, like all taxes they must also be considered from a more general policy perspective. From this perspective, property taxes may be viewed, depending upon one s assumptions, the environment in which they are applied, and their design and effectiveness, as an equitable and efficient way of raising revenue or they may be considered to be a regressive and undesirable form of public finance. A large number of studies have shown that; 1. Property taxes are generally heavier on non residential (and especially commercial) properties than on residential (single family) homes. 2. When there is considerable local discretion with respect to property taxes, there are also likely to be great differences in effective tax rates. • 35. Minimum Driving Age Should Not Be Raised To 18 Essay The big one six is an age kids look forward to their whole lives. A new found freedom teens gain when turning sixteen is driving. Driving is a privilege and an incentive for teens, and driving opens up a world of opportunities to young adults. Some people think teens are too immature to drive and should wait until adulthood, however the minimum driving age should not be raised from sixteen to eighteen. Sixteen should be the age to drive because parents cannot run teens everywhere, eighteen is a very busy age, and not all teens are immature. Moms and dads have a very busy schedule. When teens reach the legal driving age a little of the stress parents have on their shoulders is lifted off. Teens can drive to and from school, practice, extracurricular ... I as a teen understand how dangerous driving is and how I am responsible for my passengers lives while at the wheel. Why should the driving privilege given to teens at sixteen be changed because of a few bad kids? People need not to have a bad outlook on teens just because some teens are infact immature, but some adults are not very mature either. Teens just need to not be stereotypes then teenagers would not have any excuse to act up if people expected more out of them. Sixteen year olds are perfectly capable of driving, and the new found responsibility could even make teens act more mature. Busy parents, a busy young adult life, and mature teens are why the legal driving age should not be raised to the minimum age of eighteen. Sixteen is a traditional milestone in a teens life, why would one want to take that tradition away? All the opportunities sixteen year olds receive driving would be ruined if the driving age is changes to eighteen, which could also ruin a teens future. • 38. Symbolism In Tangerine By Edward Bloor Every day, people often get themselves in positions where they are presented with appearance known to be deceptive. Based on the appearance, a false truth hides beneath an exceptional display. People, objects, and buildings are entirely taken by people s perspectives. This is the theme that the book Tangerine illustrates. The novel Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor, is about Paul Fisher, a boy having to go through many situations where a false reality surrounds his life. Bloor uses Erik Fisher and the Tangerine County to reveal that reality is often far from what it appears to be. The first symbol Edward Bloor uses is Erik Fisher. Erik Fisher is a high school football star without impaired vision unlike his brother, Paul (Burch 27). As Paul finds out, his eyes were damaged from Erik. Paul states, I remembered Erik s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them (255). This shows that Paul did not realize the dark past behind his disability and that Erik could have done such a thing to him since Erik s external shape is much clearer than the looking of himself. Another reality behind Erik s typical appearance is that he orders his sidekick, Arthur Bauer to murder Luis Cruz (275). Not even enough with this, Erik stoles the jewelry from his neighborhood ... Engulfed within a period marked by massive power struggles and distorted accusations, the Truman Doctrine may appear minimal in regard to alterations of the United States international attitude. However, the Doctrine acted as a catalyst for the shift in America s foreign policy objectives and vision. Following the Allies victory in World War II, and preceding the historical period of the Red Scare, relations between the Soviet Union and the United States were relatively neutral (in spite of the drastically different ideological viewpoints). Although his parents gave birth to fourteen children, he was one of the only three kids that survived and reached adulthood (St. Vincent de Paul, 2010). The passing of Frederic Ozanam s siblings made him doubt about his Christian faith at a young age. He realized that although prayers were necessary to communicate with God, actions might make a bigger difference in the society (Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, 2013). During his years at the University of the Sorbonne in Paris, Frederic Ozanam studied law and he also defended the Catholic teachings when some of his teachers were being disrespectful to this religion. He was not only a brilliant student but also a very caring and responsible young adult (Schimberg, 1946). When he observed the miserable life of many Paris people, he decided to help the poor in Paris who were living in tenements. Specifically how suitable big wild mammals were never domesticated and most domesticated animals are Eurasian. Diamond states that lack of any characteristic dooms efforts at domestication. The Anna Karenina principle applies directly to the domestication of animals, making it relevant in understanding why some wild animals were not domesticated. By comparing mutations, one can see that a crop was independently domesticated in separate areas. This is suggested if a crop includes two or more alternative wild variants, or mutations. It is suggested because if the same crop has many different variants, it inherited one particular mutation from one area and the other mutation was inherited from a different area. This information is important to tracing the spread of agriculture because it can suggest that a crop spread very quickly to the surrounding area (one mutation), preventing the need of independently growing the crop elsewhere. On the other hand, it can also suggest that a crop spread too slow to prevent its independent domestication elsewhere. Civilization led to epidemic because as people started to ...
