1) Reported or indirect speech is used to report what another person has said without using their exact words. Pronouns, verb tenses, place and time expressions may need to be changed depending on whether a statement is being reported. 2) When reporting statements, pronouns often need to be changed depending on who is speaking. Verb tenses also need to be changed if the statement is being reported in the past tense through a process called "backshifting." 3) Place and time expressions referenced in direct speech also often need to be altered to reflect when the statement is being reported rather than when it was originally said.
