The Television Show South Park
The difference between the intended meaning of media texts and what the audience actually perceives
can be shockingly different. Producers of media can do everything possible to force audiences to
experience their work in the way they want them to, but in the end they still take away many different
meanings even within the same audience. Stuart Hall outlines this in his encoding and decoding
model. One of the most apparent examples of this is the television show South Park. The television
show South Park is a media text with the producers preferred meaning of being decoded as joke or as
being satire, but many audience members take an oppositional stance of taking it seriously. This is
clear from the examples of controversy when South Park aired episodes focused on Scientology, red
headed people, and Islam. Through these examples it is demonstrated that the producers of media have
less power compared to the audience in determining the meaning of media. In Hall s encoding and
decoding model he argues that encoding and decoding the meaning of media is not a single sided
process but one shared by both the producers and the audience. The producers encode their preferred
meaning into the media using frameworks of knowledge, relations of production, and technical
infrastructure (Hall, 1997). Frameworks of knowledge are the producers beliefs and what they assume
about the audience s beliefs. Relations of production are the needs of the financial side of the industry.

Amiri Baraka Violent Language and Rhetoric
Amiri Baraka, formerly known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, was an African American
writer of poetry. His political stance and his aesthetic interests were shaped very early by a desire for
black cultural independence, and for greater recognition of the historical contribution of blacks to all
American culture (Osterndorf). His poems are striking for their venomous language and for their
rhetorical violence. The rhetoric of rage/violence utilized in his literary works not only captivates the
audience but also serves as a vessel to channel his frustrations and call for action. I will deconstruct
and analyze the language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Amiri Baraka was not interested in mere politics but rather deconstructing roles assigned by the Anglo
American oppressor, he aimed at instilling collective action to his black community in order to
demand change while promoting black consciousness. The use of violent rhetoric and language in his
literary works is very powerful, it forces the reader to come across a new experience that he himself
must decipher and attach an emotional response to. Overall Amiri Baraka is an amazing poet whose
contributions continue to exert social, cultural and political change in modern day

Oedipus Tragic Hero
According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a protagonist in a play who has his misfortune come to him not
through, vice or depravity, but rather by some great error or frailty (Roberts and Zweig 1031). That
being said, Oedipus the King, written by the great Sophocles was a tragic play. Oedipus was told that
the only way to rid Thebes of the curse was to find the man who murdered Laius. Throughout the play,
Oedipus uses clues to find the murderer. However, in doing so, he discovered that he was Laius
murderer and had fulfilled a great prophecy. By having a close emotional connection to the audience,
a horrible hamartia happen to him, and have the audience feel pity for him during his downfall,
Oedipus is considered a tragic hero. Oedipus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oedipus tragic flaw, or his mistake, is not really something he did, or did not do, but rather something
he did not know. Oedipus tragic flaw was simply the fact that he did not know his true identity. This
becomes known when the messenger from Corinth tells Oedipus that Polybus is not his real father
(3.1020 1028). Furthermore, Aristotle believed that in tragic plays, the protagonist must be just like
ourselves (Roberts and Zweig 1031) so that the audience could have a close connection to the
protagonist. In doing so, it makes that audience feel pity and sorry for the tragic hero which is exactly
what happens in to Oedipus. Although Oedipus suffered a tragic flaw, it was not his fault. It was not
his fault that he did not know who his real parents were since he was only a baby when he was given
away to Polybus who never told Oedipus the truth. The audience feels sorry for Oedipus since there
was nothing he could do to avoid his horrible tragic

Harrington And Keenan s Reflection On Humility In The...
Reading Harrington and Keenan this week has been quite enriching. Their approach from the
perspective of New Testament studies and Catholic Moral Theology to ethics in inspiring. With regard
to the above question, I am fascinated by Keenan s reflection on humility in the context the context of
natural environment: To be humble is to know one s power in the universe and to respect one s own
place in that universe and the place of others...Humility warns us against the attitude of dominion, but
also keeps us from being detached from the world. It prompts us to see our profound dependence on
the world in which we are made (Harrington and Keenan, p. 192).
Cultivating the virtue of humility as we deal with our ecological crisis helps us appreciate that any
ecological ethic which takes into account both God and humanity and does not reduce both to some
extension of undifferentiated nature must begin with a rejection of the unbridled sovereignty of
humanity over the earth. In this rejection is the recognition that all work upon the earth must be
informed by a clear understanding of and respect for the earth as an autonomous and valuable entity
and the laws of nature on which the bounty of the earth depends.
Humility is knowing one s place. As a virtue, it goes against extremes. This means that, although, in
the exercise of dominion over the earth, humanity was given the right to take from the bounty of the
earth whatever it needs for subsistence (Genesis 1:29), this dominion

Workplace Stress
Three out of every four American workers describe their work as stressful. According to the Holmes
Rahe Life Events Scale, which rates levels of stress, many of the most stressful events in life are
related to the workplace. Some examples are firings, business readjustments and changes in financial
status, altered responsibilities, a switch to a different line of work, trouble with the boss, changes in
work hours or conditions, retirement and vacations. Workplace stress costs American employers an
estimated $200 billion per year in lower productivity, absenteeism, staff turnover, workers
compensation, medical insurance and other stress related expenses. However, stress may not always
be a bad thing. It can stimulate creativity and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Career and job ambiguity a feeling of helplessness and lack of control. How can I succeed if I don t
know what s expected of me or if my job here is uncertain? Stress levels are affected by vagueness
within management. A lot of people think this is a lack of communication from the manager to the
employee, but I feel that it is the responsibility of the employee to seek out what is expected of him or
her. For example, if you get a bad evaluation or raise, simply go to your boss and ask him what you
can do differently over the next year to enable you to get a better evaluation or increase in pay.
No feedback good or bad prevents people from knowing how they are doing and whether they are
meeting expectations. Stress related to this issue is typically one of management misperception as to
the amount, importance, and effectiveness of feedback to employees. Whatever the cause, employees
are easily stressed by lack of communication in this area. This is again something you may not have
control over, but it is still a good demonstation of why a lack of communication is damaging.
No appreciation lack of recognition generates stress that endangers future efforts. Human nature
requires that we demonstrate appreciation for jobs well done. Inadequate demonstration of
appreciation results in lowered productivity. This

The Crusades Paper
The Crusades were expeditions that originated in completion of a solemn vow in order to deliver the
Holy areas from Mohammedan domination. The origin of the word can be traced to the cross. This
meaningful cross was worn as a badge on the outer garment of those who took part in these enterprises
and also made out of cloth. Since the Middle Ages, the meaning of the word crusade has been
comprehended to contain all wars undertaken in the act or practice of pursuing a vow. It was also
directed against infidels who were the Mohammedans, Pagans, Heretics, or those under the bar of
excommunication. Modern literature has abused the word crusade by applying it to all wars having
anything to do with religion. An example would be the voyage of ... Show more content on

In Asia Minor, they turned to spoils and were nearly all slaughtered by the Turks. Meanwhile,
according to the well thought out plan, the four principal armies were to meet at Constantinople and
the regular crusade was being organized in the West. The Germans, the French from the north,
Godfrey of Bouillon, and the Duke of Lower Lorraine followed the valley the Danube, crossed into
Hungary and arrived at Constantinople on December 23rd,1096. Several different groups of Christian
leaders would proceed in all directions for the conquest and fight for Christianity in the East. Hugh of
Vermandois, brother of King Philip I of France, Count Stephen of Blois, and Robert Courte Heuse,
Duke of Normandy would lead groups of French and Normans across the Alps and were heading
towards Apulia where they took the Via Eqnatia to Constantinople and set up troop in May of 1097.
The French from the south were lead by Raymond of Saint Gilles, Bishop of Puy, Count of Toulouse,

Macroeconomics And Macroeconomics Individual Assignment
Macroeconomics Individual Assignment 1

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Japan has experienced significant declines in household net savings
rates. The 90 s was a decade of slow growth, and households devoted a large portion of their incomes
to maintaining consumption levels. Large amounts of liquid savings in postal savings accounts and in
banks meant the majority of the population did not feel they had to increase saving in order to rebuild
assets. (Feldstein, 2010)
A number of factors contributed to this decline in the savings rate. One such factor is that
demographic structure is changing rapidly. There is an increasing number of retirees relative to the
people within the labour force. The people in the labour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Japan s public pension system can be divided into the Employees Pension System, the Mutual Aid
Association Pension System and the National Pension System. Pensions can alliveate many financial
worries that people in the workforce may experience into the future and problems a retiree is
experiencing currently. This creates a situation where there is less of a reason to save and hence
declines in savings rates occur.
Real incomes for workers experienced slow growth from the beginning of the 1990 s to the present
day in Japan. This has impacted savings rate as a large portion of the population do not have the
finances to save effectively. This would account for low consumer spending regardless of the low
saving rates. Reductions in labour productivity and issues with corporate competitiveness are two
main factors behind this reduction in real incomes.

database attributes will be checked to make sure that all the key attributes have been included within
the entities. Second, each cell will contain only one value and not a group of values. A cell is the
intersection between the columns and rows. Third, all of the key attributes that have been defined
should be dependent on the primary key. The Riordan Manufacturing database entities contains all of
the necessary attributes for each entity and each of these attributes are dependent on the primary key

Haroun And The Sea Of Stories Essay
Haroun and the Sea of Stories Essay
Storytelling plays an important role in people s lives. In Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salman
Rushdie explores the vital role stories have in the lives of multiple characters. Politicos need stories in
their lives in order to succeed. Without stories, the politicos would never be able to persuade or
convince voters in an interesting way. The stories Rashid Khalifa tell are a vital part of his everyday
life. Without the tales he spins, Rashid wouldn t have a job and the city he lives in would be
completely devoid of happiness. Stories have been important in the shaping of the Haroun at the end
of the book. If Haroun had no stories, his childhood would have been dark and he wouldn t have
followed the hero path. Within the fictional world of Haroun and the Sea of Stories the characters
realize that stories are not mere entertainment but are crucial to their lives.

Basket making was normally done by the elders of the tribe. The elders would sit around large fires
weaving baskets and singing ancient songs or prayers. Phillip Martin said, The baskets were made out
of any materials found in the area. The most common material used was tall grass (Martin 1). The
baskets can be found in various sizes and different configurations. While in the Hall of the Tribes we
found a basket that was taller than a fully grown man. The basket was made out of tall grass and
weighed well over one hundred pounds. In order to color a basket tall grass would have to be cut and
dried on drying racks. After the grass was dried baskets would be decorated with dye. In order to dye a
basket a particular color different herbs, fruit berries, flowers, grasses of color, and certain species of
trees were selected to make the different dye colors. The materials used for dye were then crushed or
pulverized into powder and made into paste or liquid paint. After the dye paint was made the tall grass
was soaked in the desired color and again placed on drying racks. Weavers then selected the desired
color stained grass and wove it into their baskets. After we departed the Hall of Tribes, we ventured
out into the surrounding snow covered grounds to see the ancient structures and ceremonial dwellings
that were also painted with the same colors and patterns as used on

Key Factors Of A Gifted Student s Educational Experience...
Our gifted programming standards take several factors of a gifted student s educational experience
into account. Our primary goal is for each gifted student to develop well rounded academically,
socially, and emotionally.
To accomplish this goal we integrate our gifted programming standards with the academic standards.
We have specific student outcomes with which we use the academic content to accomplish. Student
outcomes are
grouped into four areas.
Cognitive Growth and Talent Development
Students benefit from meaningful and challenging learning activities that address their unique
characteristics and needs. (Standard 1.6) Students become more competent and develop their abilities.
(Standards 3.2 3.3)
The interventions we use are designed to increase challenge and develop self efficacy in our
students. We operate at the three highest levels of Bloom s Taxonomy: synthesis, evaluation,
and analysis. Students use metacognition where they notice their thoughts and record their
thinking. This allows us to ratchet up the level of their thinking through the types of questions
we ask. We want our students to become self regulated learners. We encourage them to set
goals and recognize their accomplishments. They learn to self monitor and adapt to changes
using a variety of learning strategies.
When we ask students to leave tracks in their reading, they are doing a metacogitive
activity. Beyond making connections to the text, we ask them to notice

What Is The Theories Of Three Human Development Theorists,...
Human development is an essential aspect in early childhood education. This essay is going to discuss
the theories of three human development theorists, Urie Bronfenbrenner, John Bowlby and Mary
Ainsworth s. Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems theory is concerned with family, cultural and
social influences and all the other environmental elements. Bowlby s Attachment theory and Stages of
attachment and Ainsworth s Strange Situation research which breaks down attachment into three types
are related to the relationship between adults and children. These theories are all associated with socio
cultural theory, which is throughout the New Zealand early childhood curriculum Te whariki (Ministry
of Education, 1996). Bronfenbrenner (Sigelman Rider, 2014) created an ecological system model
which illustrates both direct and indirect influences (these influences are bi directional) in an
individual s growth environment. This ecological system consists of five systems which all have an
individual as their same centre and gradually extend from this individual to the last and largest system,
including minute but immediate impacts like a bee in the garden that stung this individual and
macroscopical but subtle impacts like global warming. Meanwhile, they are inclusive, as Te Whariki,
the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, describes it as a set of nested Russian dolls (The
Ministry of Education, 1996, page.19), which means these in systems, one contains another.

A Personal Leadership Philosophy
The path to a personal leadership philosophy is made up of three parts. Each individual aspect is a
facet of a complete whole. Much like a timeline that includes a past present and future, my personal
philosophy consists of a foundation, action, and growth. If you do not understand where your
foundation of leadership came from you will have problems acting in a leadership capacity. Also if
don t pay attention to how you are acting as a leader you cannot know in what ways you need to grow.
Why should I spend the time and effort in developing myself as a leader? The Gunner s Mate rating
has a strength of just over 600 members. Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay has 31 Gunner s
Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner s Mates in the Coast Guard that I lead.
During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay approximately 55 Gunner s mates (9.2 percent)
will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a young Gunner s
Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the rating. Now today
I am in the position to have that same impact.

The Policy Reforms During The Military Regime
Over the last half century, Brazil has seen a change in state run control from a military dictatorship to
a liberal democratic regime. This transition was coupled with an economic shift from import
substitution industrialization (ISI) to a neoliberal understanding of export led industrialization. The
subsequent reforms attempted to align the state with liberal ideology particularly through the
presidencies of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Considering the extent of
policy reforms that occurred in the state, it s a clear delegitimation of the former military regime. The
aspiration to achieve individual liberty, autonomy, and security in terms of free civil societies did not
advance as a smooth conjunction. Although the authoritarian state abdicated to an electoral
democracy, much of the military style enforcement remains an accepted aspect of Brazil, which
clearly violates democratic principles of civil rights. This paper will analyze policies that ostensibly
fortify the judiciary institutions, which are aimed to improve the blatant lack of accountability and
efficacy that has plagued the country since the military regime. Even though neoliberal policies are
known to erode substantive democracy, they are considered to promote formal democracy. As such,
the progression of the institutional systems has allowed a wider representation of the political
spectrum that encourages participation and the growth of more transparent civil societies. However,

The Schlieffen Plan Essay
The Schlieffen Plan
The Schlieffen Plan is commonly though misleadingy identified with the German western offensive at
the start of the First World War in August 1914, which began as a campaign of rapid movement but
ended in deadlock and trench warfare. The plan is generally seen as a desperate gamble almost certain
to fail, and its recklessness is counted as part of Germany s war guilt the plan held out the false
promise of a quick victory, and so it underpinned the short war illusion that led Germany into a long
war of attrition, ending with her defeat and collapse in 1918. This analysis confuses two quite different
moments in history. The Schlieffen Plan was not designed to meet the strategic challenge Germany
faced in 1914, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we can turn to the altered version that Moltke actually used at the beginning of the First World
War.
In February 1891 Count Alfred von Schlieffen was appointed Chief of the Prussian General Staff, a
post which he held until the end of 1905. The most important responsibility of the General Staff was
to produce the annual deployment plans, which stipulated how the German army was to be drawn up
ready for battle in case of war. The initial pattern of deployment was the basis of the operational plan
for the conduct of the war itself. The General Staff routinely tested these war plans in studies and
exercises. During most of Schlieffen s time as Chief of Staff, the essential strategic problem for
Germany was indeed the likelihood that the next war would have to be fought against two enemies on
widely separated fronts, the French in the west and the Russians in the east. Schlieffen never found a
convincing solution to this problem. His suggestion was to deploy much greater forces on one of the
fronts in order to defeat that enemy quickly and decisively, and then to use rail mobility to reinforce
the other front and win a decisive victory there too. That sounded fine in theory, but when it was tested
in exercises it proved hard to achieve. An initial victory on one front could not be fully exploited
because of the need to switch forces promptly to the other front. Once that happened, the first enemy

Analysis Of Natalie Zemon-Davis s The Return Of Martin Guerre
Natalie Zemon Davis s 1983 book The Return of Martin Guerre provided both the public and
academic world with a fresh and interesting take on a classic story. Presented like a mystery thriller,
Davis weaves a tale of deception based on a solid framework of cultural history. Her narrative depends
on grounding the characters of Bertrande de Rols, Martin Guerre, Arnaud du Tihl, and their associates
within a web of social context. Davis draws heavily on the traditional Coras narrative, but also
supplements the established story with the version presented in Le Sueur, a new source she
discovered. Additionally, she incorporates unusual sources dealing with broader social context and
infers specifics from a general study of period interactions. It is this latter approach that historian
Robert Finlay disagrees with. He claims that Davis does not appropriately rely on the source material
provided by the Coras narrative and thus gives an unnecessarily dramatic version of events. The AHR
forum on the subject includes both Finlay s review and Davis s response, providing a model of
scholarly debate that extends beyond the actual content of the book in question. In addition to being a
rhetorical critique, Finlay is attacking the foundational methodology of modern social history that
Davis is then compelled to defend.
According to Robert Finlay, Zemon Davis provides an overly romanticized version of the narrative
that deviates too heavily from the source material. While he qualifies his

Family Identity Research Paper
Identity The identity can be defined in some ways as a close similarity, affinity or having a strong
links with your family and others. The society tends to judge us according to the image they have of
our family. In reality, who we are and how we behave reflect to how our caregivers raise us. I grew up
in a community where my family expect me to do good anytime, because they were scared about how
my behavior can affect their reputation. My family, plays a crucial role in my life through shaping my
identity. First of all, my family has a great impact on my identity because of the beautiful and
significant name that they give me. I was named after my grandmother on my father s side. My
grandmother was a strong

Short Story Of Where The Red Fern Grows
A story about an adventurous kid his hounds hunting, winning competitions and facing death
In the beginning of the story Where The Red Fern Grows a boy named Billy saw a group of dogs
fighting on the street. Billy stopped the dogs from fighting and noticed a red hound all beat up. He
took the hound home, fed him, washed him, and released him. This made him remember his old days
of owning a hound.
When Billy was 10 he wanted two hunting hounds but his family couldn t afford it. Billy had a
sickness called puppy love so he couldn t help asking for puppies. One day he saved and worked for
his money to get two puppy hounds. He named the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann. Billy and his dogs
had so many adventures of hunting racoons. Billy once caught a ghost racoon that has never been
caught before all thanks to his dogs. Billy s dogs help him become a coon hunting expert! The dogs
would never let a coon go even if it was a stormy night. Old Dan and Little Ann were Billy s best
friends. They would always stick together and never leave each other.
One day Billy s grandfather signed him up for a racoon hunting competition. Billy was super excited
and his dogs were too. Papa, grandpa, and the hounds all went hunting with Billy. They all stayed at a
campsite and ate their breakfast. That morning Billy got his first cup of coffee. It made him feel older
and excited to have his very first cup of coffee. After breakfast, Billy and his hound started to go hunt

Analyzing Some of Anna Akhmatova s Poetry
Unassuming Exuberance
Anna Akhmatova lived from 1889 to 1966 during a dark, rough time in Russia. Everything is
Plundered, I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land, and Midnight Verses are prime examples of
Akhmatova s symbolic literature. Akhmatova used poetry to help her overcome difficulties in life; it
was a way of expressing and setting her feelings free. All of Anna Akhmatova s poems contain a
common theme that connects to her real life: though life can be rough, it is important to deal with
problems and work towards acceptance. In Midnight Verses, the theme is dark and tumultuous. This
poem is a perfect reflection of Akhmatova s life. She faced many complications in life, but she had to
accept them because she did not want to give up on her home country. Likewise, Akhmatova s poem
has an unwilling acceptance at the end. Midnight Verses also displays her thoughts in a very creative
way. And the signal bells of light rhymes / Then I begin to understand / And the simply dictated lines /
Lie down in the snow white notebook (Akhmatova 13 16). Throughout Midnight Verses, Akhmatova
uses powerful imagery, making it easy to relate to her thoughts. Everything is Plundered is another of
Akhmatova s poems that continues to illustrate this theme. In Everything is Plundered, the theme of
confusion and contrast in life is present. The struggles in life are portrayed throughout the poem. This
poem reflects humanity s imperfect

Rhetorical Analysis Of Albee s Albee
Albee uses a silly and humorous tone of voice. He uses strong language and arguments throughout his
text. It establishes a silly tone for the text. Albee establishes this tone by writing, What? F what up?
No. F what up? (Albee 41). This quote shows the tone that Albee establishes throughout the text. It
also connects to the sexuality taboo that is in today s society. Albee s use of the the word F is often
referred to as sexual intercourse. Albee is highlighting how there s a certain taboo regarding sexuality.
Thompson writes his text with a candid type of tone. He narrates the story by describing what he goes
through by using strong and direct language. For example, he talks about the drug use that he and his
attorney indulged in. As seen in the quote, the only real cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and
then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas (Thompson 4). This quote shows Thompson s
erratic and candid tone. This quote also provides a deeper meaning. By Thompson describing his drug
addiction, it shows how today s society is dwelling in over consumption. Thompson s drug addiction
is a representation of today s excess consumption. Thompson s representation of today s society is also
found when he describes the drive from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the drug and gambling
central Las Vegas. He describes the act of driving for hours while taking all sorts of drugs. This shows
how crazy he is and the excess of consumption. He uses

Langston Hughes Research Paper
In 1919, when Langston Hughes was seventeen years old, he spent the summer with his father, Jim
Hughes, in Toluca, Mexico. Langston had not seen his father since he was a small child, and he was
excited about making the trip. However, during this visit, no affectionate bond would develop between
Langston and Jim. Jim Hughes was a cold, difficult man, who was driven by ambition to make money
and achieve respect. He had moved to Mexico to avoid segregation and racial injustice in the United
States. As the manager of an electric company and owner of a ranch and mines, Jim expressed
contempt for black Americans who continued to submit to segregation and live in poverty.

Langston had no playmates because Mary Langston lived in a run down, white neighborhood. He was
afraid to leave his yard, where he was safe from rowdy white boys who chased and teased him about
the second hand clothes and cast off women s shoes that he wore.
Langston spent many hours sitting on a stool beside his grandmother, who read him stories from the
Bible or from his favorite book, Grimm s Fairy Tales. Her long wavy hair had very little gray in it, and
in her ears she wore the small gold earrings Langston s grandfather left her. Her lips were thin, and her
skin, wrinkled like an Indian squaw s, was a lighter shade of brown than Langston s.
Carrie Hughes worked in Topeka as a stenographer for a black attorney and as a clerk for a newspaper.
Occasionally, on weekends, she would take Langston to Kansas City. His Uncle Dessalines owned a
barbershop in a black neighborhood, where people s lifestyles were far different from that of his strict
grandmother in Lawrence. Langston roamed the streets near the barbershop. He played the
nickelodeon and listened to street musicians playing the blues.
Mary Langston was a devoted grandmother to her grandson. (Yale Collection of American Literature,
Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library)
In 1908, six year old Langston moved to Topeka to live with his mother in an apartment over a
plumbing shop. Jim Hughes

Controlled Fires In California
Fires are a huge topic especially here in California since we have a water drought which causes many
land fields to be very dry. Summer is coming which means fire season, we have to be able to know
how to control fires when they occur. Also we need to be conservative over our water, without it we
can t fight the fires and control them. I support the fact that we want to practice the method of
controlled fires because it can help improve the way we fight fires. Controlled fires are a technique
sometimes used in forest fire management also to help get rid of green house gases. It helps improve
the environment and forest conditions almost like the slash and burn technique. But the method of
controlled burning is dangerous to the animals living

The Economy Of Honours
Demosthenes claimed that the economy of honours was democratic because it allowed the population
to reward individuals for helping to preserve democracy through philanthropy. Benefactors or
euergetes were encouraged to donate to their city by being rewarded with various honours. The orator
opposed Leptines law, which made no one exempt from liturgies as he believed that exemptions were
one way of honouring men who had helped to preserve democracy (Demosthenes Against Leptines,
17). One such figure was Leucon, the King of the Bosphorus, who had provided Athens with grain out
of his own generosity (Demosthenes 31). Demosthenes also disapproved of Leptines law because it
diminished the sovereignty of the demos, removing their freedom to show their appreciation to
whoever they chose(Demosthenes 15). In the fourth century BC, especially after the social war, the
economy of Athens had significantly decreased in wealth and power since the Periclean golden age
and could no longer afford such gestures as paying people to participate in the assembly, aiming to
increase political egalitarianism (Finley, Chatto and Windus 1981, p.86). One attempt to increase
revenue involved granting honours to people who donated to the state in order to encourage more
benefactions. In order to increase wealth the state needed to compromise some of it s political
equality, allowing individuals to distinguish themselves more so than previously (Veyne 1976, p.90
91). This inevitable paradox

Examples Of Groupthink Decision Making
Groupthink decisions making is made by a group of people who spend time together to engage in a
team task backstage to discuss issues. During the collective decision making, members of the group
conclude with poor and unusual results. The outcome of the decision may fail for the fact that
members of the group ignore crucial issues such as ethical or moral. When the group has two people
with strong personality, the two will compete and disagree because they both have similar qualities. It
affects can their thought and actions when making a decision. For example, they can sabotage the
policymaking when giving their views and ideas, proving whose better. Another way to sabotage is
when different political opponents tussle during decision making because they disagree on political
reasons that could create conflict. Furthermore, those who are unwilling to give their opinion end up
without a say affecting the outcome of the decision when it failed. According to Dominic Parker of the
Lehigh University in his report. Dominic stated that members who are not willing to publicly present

Persuasive Speech On Animal Testing
As a huge animal lover, I was disgusted to hear about Ebbie s story. Ebbie was a beagle rescued from
an animal testing lab in Spain. When he was rescued by an organization called Beagle Freedom
Project, he was deathly ill, emaciated and had tumors all over his frail body. Before being rescued, he
had spent his entire life in solitary confinement where humans tested many deadly chemicals on him.
When he first moved into his new home after being rescued, he just spent his days lying on the floor
and was unwilling to interact with humans in anyway. It s truly incredible that after months of love
and compassion from people that fostered him, he learned about love and trust towards humans after
being so dramatically traumatized from the abuse he received in a lab. I stand here today to present
you with the issue that needs to be addressed immediately: the abuse of millions of innocent and
defenseless animals through animal experimentation. Millions of animals are in agonizing pain while
being kept in tiny cages of labs while scientists inject dangerous substances in them and perform risky
surgeries on them. Such immorality of scientists is allowed because there are no laws that prohibit this
torture and protect the quality of life of these innocent animals. The root of animal testing started
thousands of years ago when scientists studied animals. During the early twentieth century, more
people became curious about biology and body systems; therefore, studied on animals. As

Homeless Veterans Community Analysis
The homeless veterans population has been a problem over the decades, but over the past few years
the population of homeless veterans has increased once again. This is a concerning problem that needs

experience when they came back home lack of support that lead them to become homeless. Over the
years this has gotten better by the government starting programs to help transition back to civilian
status (Murphy Tobin, 2014). Recently this has change due to the veteran population has increased for

Essay On Sports History
Thanks to a wild and crazy night at Madison Square Garden Saturday night, the UFC has three new
champions. Some tagged UFC 217 as the best card of the year, and the event certainly lived up to the
hype. The card gave people what they want to see out of a high priced event: finishes. Some were
more unexpected than others, but the event was quite a spectacle and now opens a forum of many
questions heading into 2018. In the first of the three title fights, and perhaps the most shocking, Rose
Namajunas claimed the women s strawweight title by making longtime champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk
tap due to strikes in the first round. Namajunas landed a picture perfect overhand right, dropping

The win was the seventh in eight fights for the new champ. As for what s next for Dillashaw, he wants

Los Angeles Art World Essay
The Golden Age in Los Angeles, the art world was also hitting its stride. By the early sixties,
complained art dealer Irving Blum, the the earlier camaraderie and real affection that these people had
for one another; began to shift with the spectre of money, the spectre of commerce, the spectre of
greater interest, the spectre of greater collecting activity, the spectre of competition (Colpitt 1983, 39).
At the epicenter of the boom, the dimensions and mood of the art world were shifting for good.
Concerns were mounting that the art world was abandoning its cherished autonomy from the norms of

  • 2. The Television Show South Park The difference between the intended meaning of media texts and what the audience actually perceives can be shockingly different. Producers of media can do everything possible to force audiences to experience their work in the way they want them to, but in the end they still take away many different meanings even within the same audience. Stuart Hall outlines this in his encoding and decoding model. One of the most apparent examples of this is the television show South Park. The television show South Park is a media text with the producers preferred meaning of being decoded as joke or as being satire, but many audience members take an oppositional stance of taking it seriously. This is clear from the examples of controversy when South Park aired episodes focused on Scientology, red headed people, and Islam. Through these examples it is demonstrated that the producers of media have less power compared to the audience in determining the meaning of media. In Hall s encoding and decoding model he argues that encoding and decoding the meaning of media is not a single sided process but one shared by both the producers and the audience. The producers encode their preferred meaning into the media using frameworks of knowledge, relations of production, and technical infrastructure (Hall, 1997). Frameworks of knowledge are the producers beliefs and what they assume about the audience s beliefs. Relations of production are the needs of the financial side of the industry. Technical ... • 3. Amiri Baraka Rhetoric Edgar Gaxiola Professor Michael Davidson LTEN 175B September 4, 2015 Amiri Baraka Violent Language and Rhetoric Amiri Baraka, formerly known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, was an African American writer of poetry. His political stance and his aesthetic interests were shaped very early by a desire for black cultural independence, and for greater recognition of the historical contribution of blacks to all American culture (Osterndorf). His poems are striking for their venomous language and for their rhetorical violence. The rhetoric of rage/violence utilized in his literary works not only captivates the audience but also serves as a vessel to channel his frustrations and call for action. Amiri Baraka was not interested in mere politics but rather deconstructing roles assigned by the Anglo American oppressor, he aimed at instilling collective action to his black community in order to demand change while promoting black consciousness. The use of violent rhetoric and language in his literary works is very powerful, it forces the reader to come across a new experience that he himself must decipher and attach an emotional response to. • 4. Oedipus Tragic Hero According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a protagonist in a play who has his misfortune come to him not through, vice or depravity, but rather by some great error or frailty (Roberts and Zweig 1031). That being said, Oedipus the King, written by the great Sophocles was a tragic play. Oedipus was told that the only way to rid Thebes of the curse was to find the man who murdered Laius. Throughout the play, Oedipus uses clues to find the murderer. However, in doing so, he discovered that he was Laius murderer and had fulfilled a great prophecy. By having a close emotional connection to the audience, a horrible hamartia happen to him, and have the audience feel pity for him during his downfall, Oedipus is considered a tragic hero. Oedipus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oedipus tragic flaw, or his mistake, is not really something he did, or did not do, but rather something he did not know. Oedipus tragic flaw was simply the fact that he did not know his true identity. This becomes known when the messenger from Corinth tells Oedipus that Polybus is not his real father (3.1020 1028). Furthermore, Aristotle believed that in tragic plays, the protagonist must be just like ourselves (Roberts and Zweig 1031) so that the audience could have a close connection to the protagonist. In doing so, it makes that audience feel pity and sorry for the tragic hero which is exactly what happens in to Oedipus. Although Oedipus suffered a tragic flaw, it was not his fault. It was not his fault that he did not know who his real parents were since he was only a baby when he was given away to Polybus who never told Oedipus the truth. The audience feels sorry for Oedipus since there was nothing he could do to avoid his horrible tragic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Harrington And Keenan s Reflection On Humility In The... Reading Harrington and Keenan this week has been quite enriching. Their approach from the perspective of New Testament studies and Catholic Moral Theology to ethics in inspiring. With regard to the above question, I am fascinated by Keenan s reflection on humility in the context the context of natural environment: To be humble is to know one s power in the universe and to respect one s own place in that universe and the place of others...Humility warns us against the attitude of dominion, but also keeps us from being detached from the world. It prompts us to see our profound dependence on the world in which we are made (Harrington and Keenan, p. 192). Cultivating the virtue of humility as we deal with our ecological crisis helps us appreciate that any ecological ethic which takes into account both God and humanity and does not reduce both to some extension of undifferentiated nature must begin with a rejection of the unbridled sovereignty of humanity over the earth. In this rejection is the recognition that all work upon the earth must be informed by a clear understanding of and respect for the earth as an autonomous and valuable entity and the laws of nature on which the bounty of the earth depends. Humility is knowing one s place. As a virtue, it goes against extremes. This means that, although, in the exercise of dominion over the earth, humanity was given the right to take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence (Genesis 1:29), this dominion ... According to the Holmes Rahe Life Events Scale, which rates levels of stress, many of the most stressful events in life are related to the workplace. Some examples are firings, business readjustments and changes in financial status, altered responsibilities, a switch to a different line of work, trouble with the boss, changes in work hours or conditions, retirement and vacations. Get a large number of people together to point out the problem and you won t be seen as a trouble maker. Career and job ambiguity a feeling of helplessness and lack of control. How can I succeed if I don t know what s expected of me or if my job here is uncertain? Stress levels are affected by vagueness within management. A lot of people think this is a lack of communication from the manager to the employee, but I feel that it is the responsibility of the employee to seek out what is expected of him or her. For example, if you get a bad evaluation or raise, simply go to your boss and ask him what you can do differently over the next year to enable you to get a better evaluation or increase in pay. No feedback good or bad prevents people from knowing how they are doing and whether they are meeting expectations. Stress related to this issue is typically one of management misperception as to the amount, importance, and effectiveness of feedback to employees. Whatever the cause, employees are easily stressed by lack of communication in this area. This is again something you may not have control over, but it is still a good demonstation of why a lack of communication is damaging. No appreciation lack of recognition generates stress that endangers future efforts. Human nature requires that we demonstrate appreciation for jobs well done. Inadequate demonstration of appreciation results in lowered productivity. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Crusades Paper The Crusades were expeditions that originated in completion of a solemn vow in order to deliver the Holy areas from Mohammedan domination. The origin of the word can be traced to the cross. This meaningful cross was worn as a badge on the outer garment of those who took part in these enterprises and also made out of cloth. Since the Middle Ages, the meaning of the word crusade has been comprehended to contain all wars undertaken in the act or practice of pursuing a vow. It was also directed against infidels who were the Mohammedans, Pagans, Heretics, or those under the bar of excommunication. Modern literature has abused the word crusade by applying it to all wars having anything to do with religion. An example would be the voyage of ... Macroeconomics And Macroeconomics Individual Assignment Macroeconomics Individual Assignment 1 Wil Creasy Part A Since the beginning of the 1990s, Japan has experienced significant declines in household net savings rates. The 90 s was a decade of slow growth, and households devoted a large portion of their incomes to maintaining consumption levels. Large amounts of liquid savings in postal savings accounts and in banks meant the majority of the population did not feel they had to increase saving in order to rebuild assets. (Feldstein, 2010) A number of factors contributed to this decline in the savings rate. One such factor is that demographic structure is changing rapidly. There is an increasing number of retirees relative to the people within the labour force. The people in the labour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan s public pension system can be divided into the Employees Pension System, the Mutual Aid Association Pension System and the National Pension System. Pensions can alliveate many financial worries that people in the workforce may experience into the future and problems a retiree is experiencing currently. This creates a situation where there is less of a reason to save and hence declines in savings rates occur. Real incomes for workers experienced slow growth from the beginning of the 1990 s to the present day in Japan. This has impacted savings rate as a large portion of the population do not have the finances to save effectively. This would account for low consumer spending regardless of the low saving rates. Reductions in labour productivity and issues with corporate competitiveness are two main factors behind this reduction in real incomes. Basket making was normally done by the elders of the tribe. The elders would sit around large fires weaving baskets and singing ancient songs or prayers. Phillip Martin said, The baskets were made out of any materials found in the area. The most common material used was tall grass (Martin 1). The baskets can be found in various sizes and different configurations. While in the Hall of the Tribes we found a basket that was taller than a fully grown man. The basket was made out of tall grass and weighed well over one hundred pounds. In order to color a basket tall grass would have to be cut and dried on drying racks. After the grass was dried baskets would be decorated with dye. In order to dye a basket a particular color different herbs, fruit berries, flowers, grasses of color, and certain species of trees were selected to make the different dye colors. The materials used for dye were then crushed or pulverized into powder and made into paste or liquid paint. After the dye paint was made the tall grass was soaked in the desired color and again placed on drying racks. Weavers then selected the desired color stained grass and wove it into their baskets. • 14. Key Factors Of A Gifted Student s Educational Experience... Our gifted programming standards take several factors of a gifted student s educational experience into account. Our primary goal is for each gifted student to develop well rounded academically, socially, and emotionally. To accomplish this goal we integrate our gifted programming standards with the academic standards. We have specific student outcomes with which we use the academic content to accomplish. Student outcomes are grouped into four areas. Cognitive Growth and Talent Development Students benefit from meaningful and challenging learning activities that address their unique characteristics and needs. (Standard 1.6) Students become more competent and develop their abilities. (Standards 3.2 3.3) The interventions we use are designed to increase challenge and develop self efficacy in our students. We operate at the three highest levels of Bloom s Taxonomy: synthesis, evaluation, and analysis. Students use metacognition where they notice their thoughts and record their thinking. This allows us to ratchet up the level of their thinking through the types of questions we ask. We want our students to become self regulated learners. We encourage them to set goals and recognize their accomplishments. They learn to self monitor and adapt to changes using a variety of learning strategies. When we ask students to leave tracks in their reading, they are doing a metacogitive activity. Beyond making connections to the text, we ask them to notice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. What Is The Theories Of Three Human Development Theorists,... Human development is an essential aspect in early childhood education. This essay is going to discuss the theories of three human development theorists, Urie Bronfenbrenner, John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth s. Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems theory is concerned with family, cultural and social influences and all the other environmental elements. Bowlby s Attachment theory and Stages of attachment and Ainsworth s Strange Situation research which breaks down attachment into three types are related to the relationship between adults and children. These theories are all associated with socio cultural theory, which is throughout the New Zealand early childhood curriculum Te whariki (Ministry of Education, 1996). Bronfenbrenner (Sigelman Rider, 2014) created an ecological system model which illustrates both direct and indirect influences (these influences are bi directional) in an individual s growth environment. This ecological system consists of five systems which all have an individual as their same centre and gradually extend from this individual to the last and largest system, including minute but immediate impacts like a bee in the garden that stung this individual and macroscopical but subtle impacts like global warming. Meanwhile, they are inclusive, as Te Whariki, the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, describes it as a set of nested Russian dolls (The Ministry of Education, 1996, page.19), which means these in systems, one contains another. • 18. The Policy Reforms During The Military Regime Over the last half century, Brazil has seen a change in state run control from a military dictatorship to a liberal democratic regime. This transition was coupled with an economic shift from import substitution industrialization (ISI) to a neoliberal understanding of export led industrialization. The subsequent reforms attempted to align the state with liberal ideology particularly through the presidencies of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Considering the extent of policy reforms that occurred in the state, it s a clear delegitimation of the former military regime. The aspiration to achieve individual liberty, autonomy, and security in terms of free civil societies did not advance as a smooth conjunction. Although the authoritarian state abdicated to an electoral democracy, much of the military style enforcement remains an accepted aspect of Brazil, which clearly violates democratic principles of civil rights. This paper will analyze policies that ostensibly fortify the judiciary institutions, which are aimed to improve the blatant lack of accountability and efficacy that has plagued the country since the military regime. Even though neoliberal policies are known to erode substantive democracy, they are considered to promote formal democracy. As such, the progression of the institutional systems has allowed a wider representation of the political spectrum that encourages participation and the growth of more transparent civil societies. • 21. The Schlieffen Plan Essay The Schlieffen Plan The Schlieffen Plan is commonly though misleadingy identified with the German western offensive at the start of the First World War in August 1914, which began as a campaign of rapid movement but ended in deadlock and trench warfare. The plan is generally seen as a desperate gamble almost certain to fail, and its recklessness is counted as part of Germany s war guilt the plan held out the false promise of a quick victory, and so it underpinned the short war illusion that led Germany into a long war of attrition, ending with her defeat and collapse in 1918. Then we can turn to the altered version that Moltke actually used at the beginning of the First World War. In February 1891 Count Alfred von Schlieffen was appointed Chief of the Prussian General Staff, a post which he held until the end of 1905. The most important responsibility of the General Staff was to produce the annual deployment plans, which stipulated how the German army was to be drawn up ready for battle in case of war. The initial pattern of deployment was the basis of the operational plan for the conduct of the war itself. The General Staff routinely tested these war plans in studies and exercises. During most of Schlieffen s time as Chief of Staff, the essential strategic problem for Germany was indeed the likelihood that the next war would have to be fought against two enemies on widely separated fronts, the French in the west and the Russians in the east. Schlieffen never found a convincing solution to this problem. His suggestion was to deploy much greater forces on one of the fronts in order to defeat that enemy quickly and decisively, and then to use rail mobility to reinforce the other front and win a decisive victory there too. That sounded fine in theory, but when it was tested in exercises it proved hard to achieve. An initial victory on one front could not be fully exploited because of the need to switch forces promptly to the other front. Once that happened, the first enemy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Analysis Of Natalie Zemon-Davis s The Return Of Martin Guerre Natalie Zemon Davis s 1983 book The Return of Martin Guerre provided both the public and academic world with a fresh and interesting take on a classic story. Presented like a mystery thriller, Davis weaves a tale of deception based on a solid framework of cultural history. Her narrative depends on grounding the characters of Bertrande de Rols, Martin Guerre, Arnaud du Tihl, and their associates within a web of social context. Davis draws heavily on the traditional Coras narrative, but also supplements the established story with the version presented in Le Sueur, a new source she discovered. Additionally, she incorporates unusual sources dealing with broader social context and infers specifics from a general study of period interactions. It is this latter approach that historian Robert Finlay disagrees with. He claims that Davis does not appropriately rely on the source material provided by the Coras narrative and thus gives an unnecessarily dramatic version of events. The AHR forum on the subject includes both Finlay s review and Davis s response, providing a model of scholarly debate that extends beyond the actual content of the book in question. In addition to being a rhetorical critique, Finlay is attacking the foundational methodology of modern social history that Davis is then compelled to defend. According to Robert Finlay, Zemon Davis provides an overly romanticized version of the narrative that deviates too heavily from the source material. While he qualifies his ... Akhmatova used poetry to help her overcome difficulties in life; it was a way of expressing and setting her feelings free. It also connects to the sexuality taboo that is in today s society. Albee s use of the the word F is often referred to as sexual intercourse. Albee is highlighting how there s a certain taboo regarding sexuality. Thompson writes his text with a candid type of tone. As seen in the quote, the only real cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas (Thompson 4). This quote shows Thompson s erratic and candid tone. This quote also provides a deeper meaning. By Thompson describing his drug addiction, it shows how today s society is dwelling in over consumption. Thompson s drug addiction is a representation of today s excess consumption. Thompson s representation of today s society is also found when he describes the drive from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the drug and gambling central Las Vegas. • 29. The Economy Of Honours Demosthenes claimed that the economy of honours was democratic because it allowed the population to reward individuals for helping to preserve democracy through philanthropy. Benefactors or euergetes were encouraged to donate to their city by being rewarded with various honours. The orator opposed Leptines law, which made no one exempt from liturgies as he believed that exemptions were one way of honouring men who had helped to preserve democracy (Demosthenes Against Leptines, 17). One such figure was Leucon, the King of the Bosphorus, who had provided Athens with grain out of his own generosity (Demosthenes 31). Demosthenes also disapproved of Leptines law because it diminished the sovereignty of the demos, removing their freedom to show their appreciation to whoever they chose(Demosthenes 15). In the fourth century BC, especially after the social war, the economy of Athens had significantly decreased in wealth and power since the Periclean golden age and could no longer afford such gestures as paying people to participate in the assembly, aiming to increase political egalitarianism (Finley, Chatto and Windus 1981, p.86). One attempt to increase revenue involved granting honours to people who donated to the state in order to encourage more benefactions. In order to increase wealth the state needed to compromise some of it s political equality, allowing individuals to distinguish themselves more so than previously (Veyne 1976, p.90 91).
