Reputation And Social Status In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
The Importance of Reputation and Social Status in the Victorian Era
In this essay, I am going to stereotype the ideals of the Victorian era and use this knowledge to
examine Robert Stevenson s, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Oscar Wilde s, The Importance of Being
Earnest. I will argue that Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest and Dr. Jekyll in Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde were both highly influenced by their own reputation, along with their families, and social status.
I will discuss Victorian values and how they affected Dr. Jekyll s and Jack s reputation. The paper will
continue to argue how and why Jack and Dr. Jekyll were influenced by their ideals to improve their
reputation and their social status. The Victorian era influenced the lives of Jack and Dr. Jekyll in their
attempts to achieve a good reputation and high social status. Reputation was one of the many defining
factors of the everyday life of Victorian era high, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the town, he was Earnest, a well respected upper class citizen while in the town, he was Jack, a man
with no family and a poor social status. He was greatly influenced by Victorian ideals such as a perfect
reputation. In the book, he lies about his name in order to be viewed as a greater man and so his lover,
Gwendolen, will marry him. She believes that she could only ever be married to a man named Earnest.
A major theme in The Importance of Being Earnest is social status. When Jack proposes to
Gwendolen, Lady Bracknell responds by saying, You can hardly imagine that I and Lord Bracknell
would dream of allowing our only daughter a girl brought up with the utmost care to marry into a
cloak room and form an alliance with a parcel... (Stevenson 218). Lady Bracknell did not believe Jack
was worthy of his daughter because of his reputation. Every decision Jack made was to better his
reputation in order to marry Gwendolen. He lied about his name and was willing to be

The Laws That Impact Hiring Practices
Three Laws that Impact Hiring Practices
After reading JetBlue Airways: Starting from Scratch I considered different aspects of the case and
realized there are certain employment laws that JetBlue should be aware of to guarantee that they are
following state and government laws that were enacted to protect the rights of others. The three laws
identified are the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, and
American with Disabilities Act. These detailed laws contain information to assist JetBlue tremulously
in their hiring practices and eliminate the possibility of a lawsuit being bought against them. In the
meanwhile, compliance with these laws are obligatory and heavy penalties can be imposed if they are
not observed by JetBlue. It will affect their image and caused them to be viewed as a company with
faulty hiring practices and one who does not comply with the laws set in place therefore felonious
charges may be bought upon them.
The law with the highest influence on opportunity employment equality for JetBlue is Title VII of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964. Therefore, under Civil Rights Act, it will be unlawful for JetBlue to
differentiate during the process of hiring, firing, promoting, or rewarding an employee in areas based
on certain things such as race, religion, or national origin. Per the Civil Rights Act retaliation is
prohibited against any employee who participates in an investigation against a company. JetBlue

Allusions In Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a very popular show to teens and adults alike. The show s screenwriter,
Joss Whedon, studied literature in college, and therefore, the show has layered episodes with literary
elements like symbolism, metaphors, and allusions. The show is easily very relatable to teenagers .
Buffy expresses teenage drama in a supernatural way that is interesting to watch. Buffy is also known
for its dialogue ,but this popular opinion is the reason why Whedon wrote the episode Hush . He was
tired of hearing that a critical part of the series was the dialogue so he wrote an episode that had
silence fourteen minutes into the episode.. The original airing of Hush received 6.6 million views and
the episode was nominated for an Emmy. In the episode Hush , there are multiple instances where the
characters show that words are not as important as actions. Buffy is the main character of the series
and in this season she has a love interest named Riley. While it is clear they both have feelings for
each other, they are terrible at communicating. For one, Buffy and Riley both lie about their true
identities to each other. Buffy is the slayer, which means she protects mankind from monsters like
vampires and werewolves. After a class discussion, the couple begin to talk. During the conversation,
Buffy accidentally tells Riley she will be patrolling later that day, which she quickly covers up. While
Buffy is the Slayer, Riley works for the government, protecting people as

Clyne s Revision of Grice s Maxims Essay
Grice s Maxims have been criticised for being too Anglo centric. Michael Clyne proposes revisions to
the four maxims in his 1994 book Intercultural Communication at Work. Do Clyne s revisions of this
model go far enough in universally accounting for intercultural conversation? Why or why not? Grice
s General Cooperative Principle has been under continuous debate for the past three decades. It is
mainly through the maxims that Grice s paradigm has been challenged as highly ethnocentric,
however such readings may tend to take the maxims too literally rather than as reference points for
language interchange (Allan as cited in Clyne, 1994, p. 11). There is some agreement in this, but as
suggested by Mey (1994, p. 74), the principle and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In such cases, there is a clash between Grice s maxims and the pragmatic rules of conversation, which
are culturally sensitive. For example, when being offered a drink, a typical Chinese person would
automatically say no the first time, while expecting the offer to be made at least two or three times
more. This resembles a kind of phatic language communication; saying no, but not really meaning no.
In this sort of situation, if someone doesn t adhere to the cultural norm choosing to follow Grice s
maxims instead, then they would sound odd and out of place. The above example demonstrates that
Grice s maxims aren t relevant in all contexts as they clash with certain cultural values systems. Many
linguists (Clyne, 1994; Hymes, 1986; Loveday, 1983; Walsh, 2009) have picked up on this
discrepancy between theory and data, claiming that the maxims are only relevant to the English
speaking Western world. In particular, Clyne (1994) has pointed out that they have limited relevance
to cultures where content and knowledge are core values. For example, speakers of Malagasy, whose
form of co operation seems to consist in making their contributions as opaque, convoluted and non
perspicuous as possible (Keenan as cited in Mey, 1994, p. 74) could be seen as flouting the Maxim of
Quantity. This is because information, especially new information gives the holder a certain amount of
prestige, thus Malagasy people tend to

Prime Minister
This Topic is an interesting one because many throughout the country are divided on the topic of the
Prime Minister and whether or not they hold too much power within their role. With past allegations
of corruption, many are blinded by the true powers and limitations of what properly defines the role of
our Prime Minister. Thesis: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the
Prime Minister of Canada and evaluate his or her powers to identify whether or not these powers are

Descriptive Essay About Seneca Rocks
Somewhere Among the Hills Among the Blue Ridge Mountains in West Virginia, Seneca Rocks
remains a place that values preservation of nature, its history, a family oriented environment, and the
safety and well being of those who visit. I have visited Seneca Rocks at least three times in my 18
years and it is a very common place in my hometown, therefore, my personal experience helps me
determine its values. Seneca Rocks is a bare white sandstone sheet of rocks with sheer cliffs, towering
900 feet above the surrounding valley in the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia s Panhandle. This
giant slab of rocks has been there for 440 million years. The rock sits along U.S Route 33 and is about
34 miles east of Elkins. (Bob Downing, Akron ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

West Virginia was chosen for this training school because of the terrain was similar to Italy and its
Apennine Mountains which was where the soldiers were headed next. Roughly 180 men and officers
went through this school every two weeks to learn alpine combat techniques. The training included
easy rock scrambling to extreme tension with pitons. It also included the use of assault ropes and
pulleys. Each group made two tactical night climbs on unfamiliar rocks. (Bob Downing, Akron
Beacon Journal (MCT)
Those who participated in this school camped along the river north of Seneca Rocks. Each climbing
instructor had a total of ten men to train. At the end of the first week the instructor had to drop the
weakest climbers and the remaining six got an additional week of advanced climbing. (Bob Downing,
Akron Beacon Journal (MCT)
Most people don t know this history lesson of Seneca Rocks. Climbers today have still come across
rusting soft iron pitons that were hammered into the Tuscarora quartzite. This isn t surprising
considering more than 75,000 pitons were reportedly installed on Seneca Rocks by the soldier
climbers in 1943 1944. One area at Seneca Rocks has been dubbed the Face of Thousand Pitons. (Bob

Questions and Answers on Privacy Laws
List and describe at least three (3) technologies that allow an individual to research citizens private
data
The internet, cookies, and databases are three technologies which can potentially allow individuals to
locate private information. Overtly, online web based transactions require specific personal identifiers
to be yielded by the purchaser. Through online social media, blogs, and web posts, private information
intended for a selective audience can easily be researched by the mass market. Equally, and practiced
in commercial settings, transacting on the Internet allows other data to be recorded on the private
transaction that is less evident by the purchaser. For example, cookies, store data on behavior, such as
which web pages are visited by the individual and how frequently they are visited. In addition cookies
can also reveal online shopping behavior. These cookies are then analyzed by the company to
determine potentially targeted advertising initiatives.
Databases, by virtue of their size, presents additional complications in regards to private date. There is
so much information stored in many databases worldwide that an individual has no practical means of
knowing of or controlling all of the information about themselves that can potentially be accessed by
others. Such information could potentially be sold to others for profit and/or be used for purposes not
known to or sanctioned by the individual concerned. In addition, dishonest personnel can easily

Significance Of Boston Tea Party
Boston Tea Party was a major event in American history because this act of American colonial
disobedience served as a protest against taxation. British Parliament adjusted import duties with the
passage of the Tea Act on May 10, 1773. The Tea Act granted the British East India Company Tea a
monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. Meetings were held and decisions were made. Taxes
has been raised so much and so many people did not like that. People did not like the idea of wasting
money and paying taxes for tea. As of why the parliament didn t get much respect. Tea crates were
being sent in and out. While this was happening all the colonists that were paying taxes, were also
paying for most shipments and for the tea to be going to the parliament. For them to be enjoying the
tea while the colonists were paying for it and the expenses were so high and the tea in stores were so
high as well because it was so popular. The Parliament became selfish because once they sold the tea
in stores it went to them as well and so no one bought it. Colonists had been complaining about the
taxes and mini acts of fighting had happened and people were not happy. People had been making
plans of how they were gonna get the Parliament to notice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sacramento
Both Ernesto Galarza s Barrio Boy and Joan Didion s Notes From a Native Daughter write about
Sacramento s past. Both authors talk about Sacramento during two different time periods. Joan Didion
talks about the mid century and Ernesto Galarza talks about the early 20th century. Although both
author s perspective of Sacramento differs from era to era, there are differences in certain
characteristics described by both authors. Galarza s essay focuses on an immigrant point of view

At the moment of its waking Sacramento lost...its character... (Didion 173). In other words, Didion is
pointing out how Sacramento is becoming more immoral as urbanization and industrialization occur.
However, what is most interesting is how Didion expresses Sacramento s loss of character through her
own experiences. For instance, Didion describes her wonderful memories basking in the Californian
sun, rivers, fields and valleys as a child, showcasing the real natural Sacramento. However, later on as
a n adult when she returns to Sacramento, Didion finds that the Sacramento she has been seeking is no
longer there, as a result of industrial development: It is hard to find California now, unsettling to
wonder how much of it was merely imagined or improvised; melancholy to realize how much of
anyone s memory no true memory at all...I have an indelibly vivid memory , for example, of how
Prohibition affected the hop growers around Sacramento... (Didion 57)
In the excerpt above Didion expresses how she was unable to reconnect with the California she grew
up with because of all the changes it has suffered. She also mentions prohibition, which by definition
is a reform movement that outlawed drinking because it s effects on the home, in order to really
capture how increasing industrialization led to the gradual loss of the traditional Californian way of
life. She uses prohibition as an example to show how people s ideas are shifting with the introduction
of urbanization;

Maya Case Study Essay
Having read and researched Maya s case study the first question I asked myself was, what is an
Adaptation within the human body? My understanding is that an adaptation within the body is the
long term physiological changes in response to frequent training, allowing the body to meet new
demands and help in the additional stresses that are placed on the body itself. In the case of Maya, I
have studied the chronic adaptations of Maya s muscular and cardiorespiratory system as a response to
her three months training and indeed her target goal to return to her preferred sport of tennis. I believe
that although Maya would be training in the correct way, playing tennis again as well as the exercise
regime she has designed would enable her to return to a good level of fitness, and the standard that she
had previously played. Maya s exercise regime would enable her to strengthen her requirement and
aspirations to play tennis again. Training exercises when lifting weights is a result of the learning ...

Maya s resting heart rate would also decrease as her training progresses due to the circulatory system
being more efficient. Accumulating lactic acid is much lower during higher levels of activity, due to
the circulatory system providing more oxygen resulting in the removal of waste products faster.
Arterial walls become more elasticated which allows greater tolerance of changes in blood pressure.
This would result in respiratory muscles (Diaphragm/intercostals) increasing in strength thus giving a
larger respiratory volume, which would allow more oxygen to be diffused into the blood flow (VO2
max). This effect on Maya s body would lead to an increase in the number and diameter of capillaries
surrounding the alveoli leads to an increase in the efficiency of gaseous

Since the organization spent less than 35% the standards requirement was met.
Standard 12 requires a breakdown of expenses to be included in the financial statements. o The
breakdown should be detailed, showing what portion of the expenses was allocated to program, fund
raising and administrative activities. o If the organization has more than one major program service
activity than the detailed breakdown of expenses should include a separate expense category for each
major program. o If solely IRS Form 990 is provided by the organization, it is sufficient enough to
fulfill this standard, only if the organization has one major program activity.
Bobbi and the Strays is an organization with only one major program activity, which is providing
rescue and care for stray animals. According to the standard since Bobbi and the Stray has only one
major program service activity than it is sufficient for the organization to provide IRS Form 990 and

Wuthering Heights And Thrushcross Knighte Analysis
Is Wuthering Heights as nice a place as Thrushcross Grange? (Brontë 329). That seems to be the
question quickly answered in the start of the novel, Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë, and the
answer is very clearly: No. In Wuthering Heights, contrast between the two main and unique places,
Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, helps to define and separate the lifestyles of the main
characters. Wuthering Heights is distinctively more dark and chaotic and is full of troubles that make
it seem a much darker place, while Thrushcross Grange is a brighter and more peaceful house. Brontë
is able to use the two contrasting places to help support the drastically different character personalities,
whether it be troublesome Catherine or her peaceful and calmer husband, Edgar. The use of the
drastically different places, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, are vital to the novel because
they offer contrast in the physical houses and define the people living in them and are meaningful to
the novel by providing a deep and drastic connection to each place for the reader to separate and
understand the characters thoroughly.
The difference between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange is literally like night and day in
the sense of drastic environmental differences that lead to a vivid contrast between the two places. As
Lockwood first comes upon Wuthering Heights, he was greeted by the dark contrast from the
surrounding town of Gimmerton. Wuthering Heights is notably

Essay On Treatment And Punishment
Treatment and Punishment of Crime
Angle of attack= which is more effective, treatment or punishment?
A significant question that is asked about offenders is how can they be prevented from re offending?
There have been a number of therapies and treatments developed by psychologists in order to change
offending behaviour. Three main ones are; behaviour modification (token economies), anger
management and social skills training (SST). The government have also added measurements such as
zero tolerance and imprisonment is put in place in order to stop reoffenders. I feel punishment and
treatment are only more effective than the other when used for different types of crimes and on
different types of people. In this essay I am going to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore all effects of this treatment will be forgotten meaning being punished for behaviour may be
more effective in the outside world and in an institution.
Social skills training is a cognitive behavioural treatment based on the assumption that offending is
related to deficits in social skills. Techniques used in SST often vary but most involve modelling and
role play alongside instruction in skills and feedback on performance. There is a number of studies
that suggest SST leads to improvement in targeted social skills but what is less clear is whether the
improvements remain in the long term. Spence and Marzillier found that effects are visible after three
months but disappear after six and Goldstein et al found that only 15 20% of offenders applied their
skills to other situations. I feel that SST is not effective in terms of stopping people from re offending
but it is a way of helping people cope with their emotions which more than just prisoners need to be
able to do. Once someone is in a violent situation they are not going to take time to remember and
apply skills they have been taught they will act on instinct which more than likely means the wrong
actions will be carried out meaning they will be re offending so in this case

Human Nature In The Workplace Environment
Human Nature How has the workplace environment treated people? Has it been life changing to know
the day will be amazing or to feel as though working like a dog and getting nowhere? Every human
must go to work to make money and provide for their family. If not, they will not live a happy,
successful life. Their kids will be miserable as they may not have the luxury of clean clothes and food
to feed their infinite hunger. Millions of people have jobs, but may not feel valued or excited to go to
them. They may feel overworked and undervalued with no purpose, or may not have a strong support
system in their workplace. Human nature can both positively and negatively affect the workplace
environment. Supervisors are very important towards the workplace environment. Without them,
workers may slack off and not get the job done as efficiently as needed. To be a well liked supervisor,
they need to care and understand their employees. If a supervisor acts like a robot and just gives
orders, the employees will not respect them as much as if they cared and asked them how their day is
going and what they can do to help. This will give workers a feeling of comfort while at the job. The
supervisors also need to recognize the hard work that is completed by the employees. This will make
workers feel valued and purposeful. If people are not recognized for the hard work, it can cause
dissatisfaction within their career and make them feel like they are doing immense amounts of

Rebellion In Reading Lolita In Tehran, And Persepolis
In the stories Cairo: my city, my revolution , Reading Lolita in Tehran , and Persepolis 2 a common

The And Exchange Board Of India
INTRODUCTION
The neo economic liberalization undertaken in India in the 1990s, lead to a new and improved market
structure. It redefined the roles of the various agents in the economy and founded a system based on
the market forces. It was in the backdrop of these changes that there was a marked shift in the role of
the government from an agent that ran businesses to an agent that primarily undertook regulation and
supervision to ensure optimization in the running of the businesses in India. This shift in the role of
the state ushered in an era of regulators . The regulators embodied the expertise, domain knowledge
and the impartiality that the government influenced by the political party in power could not

The Intermediaries Regulations 2008, were notified in May 2008 and brought about substantial
changes in the treatment and compliance requirements of intermediaries in the Indian securities

This paper seeks to analysis the functioning of the aforesaid regulations in the context of the Indian
securities market. It begins with a brief introduction on the meaning and definition of intermediaries
along with the circumstances in which the Intermediaries Regulations, 2008 were enforced. The next
section delves deeply into the various provisions of the regulations. The concluding section deals with
the success of the regulations and tries to identify lacuna in the implementation to create a more
efficient system for regulating the securities markets that the SEBI is trying to achieve.
DEFINITION OF INTERMEDIARIES AND THE NEED FOR THE INTERMEDIARIES
REGULATIONS, 2008
Before any progress can be made in determining the exact regulatory structure envisaged by the
Intermediaries Regulations of 2008, it is important to discuss the scope of the term intermediaries and
the various agents of the market that it seeks to incorporate within its ambit.
In common parlance, intermediaries can be understood as middlemen. With the expanding markets

Project Management Failures And Its Effects On The Mine
Project Management Failures The other evident failure was that the management did not address
concerns that were raised in regards to high volumes of harmful gases in the mine. Pike River Coal
Mine s managers were more concerned about producing huge volumes of coal, instead of protecting
their employees from avoidable accidents. For instance, reports of high methane levels were not
addressed appropriately. Instead of investing in safety procedures, the managers let their employees
work in a dangerous environment. One major problem that caused this accident was the frequent
changing of the top management. Leaders were replaced without even addressing the safety issues that
had been raised by the employees. Pike River Coal Mine could have hired well trained managers to
oversee operations at the mine for the long term. Complaints of excessive methane gas could have
been handled by installing stable fans and ventilation systems. This gesture could have helped create a
safe working environment for the miners. Leakages could also have been controlled to limit the
volumes of methane gas in the underground mine. These strategies could have been followed to
protect employees from fatal respiratory diseases as well as fire accidents (Perrow, 2002). The initial
project failure was the idea of constructing a coal mine in a mountainous terrain. The construction of

The Relationship Between Madness And Creativity, By...
Whether it is a natural talent or an acquired skill; writing allows artists to bring their creative
expression to life. Interestingly enough, there is a widespread belief that some writers develop their
creativity and knack for writing through suffering from a mental illness. This belief stems from past
research based on the relationship between madness and creativity, especially in the writing field.
Katherine M. Thomas and Marshall Duke wrote the article, Depressed writing: Cognitive distortions
in the works of depressed and non depressed poets and writers. Their article focuses on digging deeper
into the relationship between madness and writing by making an in depth analysis of writing samples
from depressed writers versus the writing samples of those who weren t. Duke and Thomas found that
there is a need for analyzing works of writing because it may provide understanding in the
relationship, which will lead to an understanding of depression and mental illness. Due to this widely
known relationship, some may look at mental illness in a positive light. This relationship may cause
people to look at the distortions as simply art; thus, diminishing the severity of mental illness. When
looking at psychological distortions from an artistic perspective, this may remove the humanity of the
writer; therefore; it is important to analyze and seriously look for the signs of cognitive distortions
because it may help us understand and possibly distinguish the relationship between

The Euthyphro Paradox
Socrates is said to be one of the wisest man who ever lived. Even in the book, The Trial and Death of
Socrates, the Oracle of Delphi even said that no man is wiser than Socrates. Although that statement in
itself can be dissected and analyzed, the main focus at hand is that of line 10a of the Euthyphro. In this
passage, Socrates presents to Euthyphro what is known even to this day as the Euthyphro Paradox .
For someone unfamiliar with the current situation in the Euthyphro, it is probably best to summarize
and explained this particular passage. Not only will explaining the dialogue shed light to the passage
but it will also help explain the Euthyphro Paradox. To begin with, Euthyphro and Socrates both meet
each other in Athens in front of the court house. They ended up starting a conversation. They come to
learn why the other is there. Euthyphro is there because he is convicting his father for murdering one
of his servants. Socrates is there because Meletus is convicting him for being impious and corrupting
the youth. Socrates begins by questioning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates than decides to ask Euthyphro if he knows what being pious means. Euthyphro answers by
saying that piety is his actions. This means in a sense that by convicting his father of murder he is
being pious. However Socrates is not satisfied with Euthyphro s answer because this is an example of
being pious and not the definition. To Socrates, Euthyphro seems to understand the difference between
being pious and impious because he knows that murder is wrong. So he then asks, Is the pious being
loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is being loved by the gods (Grube 11)?
Essentially another way of saying this would be, God loves something because it is good or

Pro-Consent Essay
The three main aspects of politics, religion and the women s right to choose go into the different
arguments over the debates of abortion. One of the movements which is pro life which is against the
legalization of abortion. Another main movement is pro choice which believes that if the fetus is a
person then the women can t if the abortion. However, pro consent believes that the women have a
right to choose to consent to the condition of pregnancy or obtain an abortion (McDonagh, 23). Pro
consent supports the rights of all living beings. People in the general public in non similar situations
should not have a right to decide a woman s right to abort a child. A woman may choose an abortion if

The reality becomes that all of Americans and most Catholics are in favor of legal abortions. However,
81% want abortion reduction which seems odd; but proves how religious views influence politics
(Cahill, 188). In the Supreme Court ruling Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal because of single
minded determination being questioned. Meanwhile, that may be the very thing that will reverse it
(Cahill, 188 89). Political candidate have to relate to the catholic bipartisan party in order to win an
election. This undermines the idea of the separation of church and state.
The general public believes that no child should live in unsafe circumstances. That means no fetus
should be knowingly born into an unhealthy environment. George Tiller stated that, Abortion is a
matter of survival for women (Young, 416). For example, a father raped and impregnated his nine year
old daughter. The clarity that the nine year old would be unfit mother and not developed enough to go
through pregnancy is evident (Young, 416 17). This coincides with Judith Jarvis Thomson s opinion of
Pro Consent.
A very vocal anti abortion protester stated for a video camera that he believed all fetuses should be
born, although, he was divorced and legally found as an unfit parent (Young, 419). This is a prime
example of unknowledgeable activists who argue that women should be forced to keep the babies by
the state should take care of the babies they could not support. However, a

A Comparison Of Detective Marvel And Detective Comics
It is without a doubt that DC and Marvel, these gigantic comic book companies, have been extremely
influential. Both creating characters, stories, and lores, that will surely stand the test of time. Creating
references and influencing our pop culture to great lenghts. However, it is quite evident which of the
two companies has had, not just the most successful run, but the most influential run. Detective
Comics, better known as DC, is superior due it s content, film production, and overall impact on
history. First of all, DC comics has some of the most recognized icons and characters. Just to name a
few, there is Batman and his infamous The Batsignal . The Batsignal first appeared in the February
1942, in the comic book Detective Comics #60. DC comics also have the rights to Superman, one of
its first comic book superheroes, a well known icon. DC has a great collections of characters, and a
plethora of superheroes. Some of such heroes being, Superman, Batman, Zatman, the Flash, Captain
Atom, Robin, Wonder Woman, and the list continues. All of these Superheros have something in
common, emphasises on the super, they all are extremely godlike. They were all born super, either by
inheritance in the case of Batman, or powers at birth. They are born powerful, and are deeply
motivated by justice. This philosophy is quite interesting, however at time sound unattractive, where
the audience finds it hard to relate to these heroes. In spite of this gap between audience and hero,

Creationism has undeniable facts. Many think it should be taught and at least be given a fair chance to
be put up against evolution. Evolution also has some true undeniable facts as well. As we learn more
and more every day, those facts tend to change though, unlike creationism which has stayed the same
since the beginning of time.
It is unfair that something is being taught without even being put into question or put up to another
opinion of why the Earth is here and how it got here. An example could be that in school, teachers
should not teach you about what political party they agree with and why that party is right. They
should be talking about both parties and giving both sides of the story and saying why they disagree.
This would show that they want you to be nonbiased and try to let you pick for yourself instead of
pushing you to side with their opinions. It is not right to only teach children, or anybody for that
matter only one view of an argument. Both sides should be taught in a way that is the least biased and
let the kids decide for themselves what is right or wrong. Whatever they choose, we need to support
them even if it is against what we believe. The most important thing we can do for our kids is to teach
them to think for themselves. But we cannot do that if we only give one side of the story, so they of

Comparing The Film Cinderella And Charles Perrault s...
A Fairytale s Interpretation Movies create a new medium for fairytales to be enjoyed. The visual
appeal of tales is much greater rather than reading them; however, fairytale films lack an element of
imagination. Cinderella, for example, is a tale that exists in both the written and visual mediums. The
tale as written by Charles Perrault, named The Little Glass Slipper, provides room for imaginative
visual interpretation from his words. An interpretation that movies do not allow. In both the film
version and Perrault s written version, for instance, the audience receives the image of the glass
slipper. The written version allows the audience to imagine the glass slipper in whichever way they

Using words in a fairytale would be more difficult and tedious to explain this part of the story. Films
do provide a visual stimulation for audiences, and this Cinderella live action movie provides an
interesting depiction of the fairytale.
Charles Perrault s The Little Glass Slipper provides a readable version of the Cinderella fairytale. This
well known version of Cinderella was not his first take of this tale, which may be how it became so
famous: he managed all the kinks out of the tale for it to be child and adult friendly. This written tale
gives you more context to the tale by the language used. The wording in the story provide deeper
meaning by the connotation of the words. Such language includes odious, wretched, wench,
magnificent, charming, and treasure. These words have ideas around them that associate feelings and
previous experiences. These feelings allow the audience to use their own imagination and experiences
to illustrate the fairytale. When Perrault describes Cinderella s treatment from her step family, this
scene can identify with many readers, thus making their own inferences about the visual aspect of the
tale and its characters. An example would be interpreting it as the demeaning hands and knees labor
while scrubbing soot off the floor. Others can view their own version of hard labor.

Human Activity And Its Impact On Creation
Introduction
There is indisputable evidence that the planet earth, the home of all life; wildlife, water, land, and air
can be damaged by human activities, consequently making people suffer. Once this happens, it is
egregious especially from the fact that creation serves as the revelation of God s presence, majesty,
and provision. Irrespective of the point that not every person physically hears God s revelation from
the scripture; every humanity has access to God s cosmic revelation; the heavens, the waters, the
natural order, the beauty of nature (Psalm 19, Romans 1). Our presumption is that human activity is
mixed in its impact on creation; sometimes productive and caring, but often irresponsible, avoidable
and sinful. The command from God to tend and keep the earth has never passed away from the fall
man; this means that man still bears responsibility of keeping and tending the earth. Therefore, lack of
concern and failure to take action carefully as followers of Christ is a poor reflection to the rest of the
world. In this particular case, we take responsibility for the damage that we have done to God s
cosmic revelation and pledge to take a resolute stance in preserving and protecting the creation over
which we have been assigned responsibility by God Himself.

While there were moments of happiness for the children placed in residential schools, the occurrences
of suffering seem to overshadow them. During the first decades of the federal government s Indian

century, federal Indian schools were nearing their 30th anniversary of existence. As the 20th century

intended capacities. As a result, student health was endangered as children known to be in, or

Caroline Bird Education
In the modern world, the value and the relevance of college education is a controversial issue. People
hold varied views on this issue: some people are of the view that college education is the only mean to
succeed in life and to achieve one s goals in life; some other people think that the value of college
education lies in the fact that college education offers the young learners a conducive environment to
grow and to be able to make mature decisions about themselves later in life. There are other people,
like Caroline Bird, whose article we are going to critique in this paper, who see college education as a
sheer waste of time and money for the majority of people. This paper focuses on Bird s article College
is a Waste of Time and Money , the paper analyses and critiques the arguments that Bird offers in

Democracies and Success in War Essay
Democracies and Success in War
Introduction
Democratic governments have spread quickly around the world since the end of the Cold War and fall
of the Soviet Union. Democracy has become one of the most desired regime types amongst states and
is contributed to fostering wealth, stability, and even peace. Dan Reiter and Allan Stam argue that
democracies are the most successful in war or military combat. In their book, Democracies at War,
Stam and Reiter argue that after observing conflicts since the 1800 s, democratic governments tend to
be more selective in choosing conflicts to participate in and democracies also have a propensity to win
more often than authoritarian regimes.
The purpose of this paper is to present a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The case of Israel was chosen for two reasons. First, Stam and Reiter mention Israel in their book and
argue that this state is a prime example of how democracies are better equipped, trained, motivated,
and successful in war. Michael Desch questions this claim by Stam and Reiter over Israel, especially
the argument that they fight more adequately and the soldiers of democracies are better trained. These
conflicting commits over Israel lays the foundation of an adequate need for a case study to see if Israel
is, as Stam and Reiter claims, more successful at war because they are a democracy, or Desch s
counter argument that Israel fought so well because they were fighting for survival, not because of
their regime. The second reason why Israel has been chosen as the case study for this paper is because
they have arguably never lost a war since independence and seem to improve in conflict through the
years.
The greatest contribution I hope to make in this paper is a deeper understanding of how democracies
choose and fight wars. Due to time constraints, this paper is only addressing one case study that deals
with two wars. As in any case study the results are limited to that particular case. However, the
research creates more in depth examination over the arguments by Stam and Reiter and, in a more
general sense, attempts to analyze propositions made by democratic theorist.

the relative objectivity of social and political groups, and an inclusive purpose by financial facets only

Hero My Mom
The Super Hero I Call Mom
My mother occupies a special place in my heart that can never be replaced. She became pregnant with
me at the age of nineteen. Being a young, single mother, she had to overcome difficult obstacles to get
us to where we are today. Life was tough and there were many times where she just wanted to give up,
but she was determined to turn her life around for the better. She ingrained a lifetime worth of advice
into my head but it was her actions that taught me that the struggles I will face now will make me
stronger in the end.
As a senior in high school, my mother was the colonel of the drill team and was preparing for college
when life threw a major curve ball her way. Once she realized she was pregnant with me, she had to
change her lifestyle entirely. With no support, financially or emotionally from my father, my mother
had to do it all on her own. This greatly affected my mother because even to this day she is still
playing a role as both a mother and father figure, and has never complained or failed to follow through
with any of her responsibilities. Raising me was especially hard for my mother because she lacked
financial stability. There were times when she didn t even have enough money for a bottle of formula.
Her parents allowed her to stay at home with them but she was required to pay rent in exchange for
my grandmother babysitting me while she worked as receptionist at a local chemical plant.

of these strategies that would work best with me are developing mutual interests with clients and

questions that help to search for common interests. These interests help build rapport, which can help
me develop new ideas or improvements for the organization. Becoming a collaborator includes
tailoring interactions to the audience (Gilley, 2006). I am constantly doing this because not everyone is

interests are found the relationship and interaction between myself and others will become more
productive or meaningful.
Outside Situations
All of these strategies can be used outside of work as well. This, I believe, is because humans need
interactions and relationships to be happy. One does not have to be cut and dry at all times. It is
finding a balance between professionalism and normalcy. Understanding the common interest between
yourself and those around you, will help to increase the quality of time being spent with others. While
one does not need to be politically savvy around their non work friends, it can improve their thoughts
toward you and your family. Observing your

Analysis On Defoe s Roxana
Maddox, James H. On Defoe s Roxana. vol. 51, no. 4, 1984, pp. 669 691 Looking at the framework of
Defoe s previous novels, Maddox demonstrates how although Roxana follows a similar pattern of
other characters, her outcome is drastically different. In former novels, when faced with a moment of
devastation, the character divided from their previous self, and in turn gained control. From there, the
character is faced with yet another unfavorable situation, but this time they are able to overcome it in
their new powerful state. On the contrary, Roxana divided from her previous self, but still faced
destruction and tragedy in the end. Maddox also examines closely the relationship between Roxana
and Amy, and how their characters follow this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, after the appearance of Susan, Roxana becomes increasingly more secretive and closed off
from her audience. Molesworth makes the argument that since the abandonment of her first husband,
Roxana is unable to trust anyone. As a result of this, all of her relationships will ultimately fail
whether it be with potential lovers, her children, longtime friend, and even the audience. Molesworth
also shows how Roxana s detachment goes as far as to reduce her children to genderless and nameless
individuals, referring to them as simply it. Snow, Malinda. Arguments to the Self in Defoe s Roxana.
Studies in English Literature, 1500 1900, vol. 34, no. 3, 1994, pp. 523 536. Snow indicates within her
argument that Roxana is one of Defoe s darkest novels, by means that his character is unable to go
through the transformation from sinful to righteous. Rather, the line between her past and present self
has never been crossed. Along with this concept, Snow illustrate how Roxana is a peculiar character
since she debates with herself about what she should do next, and predicts possible outcomes of the
path she will take. In this manner, Roxana is incredibly self aware and is able to reason with her
actions in a way that is uncommon for individuals at the time. This realization of the self that she
possesses is attributed to the way that she both justifies her actions, and denies herself the right to be
saved. Westfall,

The Heavenly Dialogue Of God And Satan
After these tragic events occurred one reads later in Job, that Satan began to attack Job s health and
Job continues to worship God. In chapter two of Job, Job s wife asks Job, Do you still hold fat your
integrity? In the ESV study bible the commentary suggests that the content of her question is
significant for how it relates to the heavenly dialogue of God and Satan. She asks Job a rhetorical
question that the doubts the sensibility of the very thing that God find commendable about Job, his
consistent integrity. The latter part of verse nine expresses the anger that Job s wife is feeling, she
answers her own question saying, Curse God and die. Job s wife lives in a culture where women did

Job exists as the sole counselor in this event because he encourage his wife even though he goes
through more than she goes through and he receives multiple negative monologues from his friends.
The rest of the book of Job discusses the miseries of Job s trials and does not mention Job s wife again
until the last five verses of the book; however this counseling session will parallel the events of Job
and focus on the reconciliation of Job s wife. This counseling session begins after Job s wife tells him
to curse God because at this point she existed at the deepest point of her grief and anger. Furthermore,
the next step to take in this counseling session exists in identifying the type of grief that Job s wife is
experiencing and if her anger exists as a symptom of grief, or does it subsist as its own issue. In J.
William Worden s book, Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy, he discusses multiple reasons and
responses of grief in different occasions. Job s wife experiences a sudden death of multiple children
and Worden proposes that those who lose a loved one in a sudden death react differently to the
situation. He says that some clients obtain a sense of unreality about the loss; others feel guilt,
helplessness, or even agitation. I believe that Job s wife is feeling agitation from the sudden death of
all her children and this is characterized by a fight or flight response. She

A sustainability analysis is similar to a five forces analysis because they are focus on creating
competitive advantage. The sustainability analysis is to analyze and find a way to compete with
competitors and deal with potential entrants, in order to maintain profits in the long run. The analysis
includes the company s resources and isolating mechanism that help the company to sustain its

b. T Mobile has introduced free phone calls from international locations.
This case is not a first movers advantage example because this is not new for other telephone
companies.

Bartleby, the Scrivener Story Analysis
Have you ever seen a person so disconnected from society and from what is considered to be normal
that he or she made you question their sanity? If so, you could relate with the lawyer in the story
Bartleby, the Scrivener. In this story, the narrator, who is a lawyer, has a simple man named Bartleby
respond to a job opening as a scrivener. Unbeknownst to the lawyer, Bartleby did not act in the
manner the lawyer would have expected. Bartleby is so outside of what is expected that it is almost as
if he had died and no longer had to live up to society s standards. In this story, Bartleby is portrayed as
a lifeless zombie and is alone with nowhere to go, no one to see, nowhere to be, and no purpose to live
for.
The first case on which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To copy someone else s work nonstop all day every day would get really tiring, but the lawyer says
Bartleby gorges himself on copying papers and documents. Usually when someone gorges him or
herself in something, it is something that they like or enjoy. In Bartleby s case this is what he does, not
because he enjoys it but because it s all he has. This is evident when the lawyer says, He ran a day and
night line, copying by sun light and by candle light. (108) This job is all he had in his life.
Another case in which Bartleby shares similarities to that of a zombie is when he repeats throughout
the story, I prefer not to. No one would ever say these words to his or her boss. That would be crazy,
but Bartleby said these words multiple times to the lawyer, his boss. This is similar to the
characteristics of a zombie, because zombies do not ever listen to anyone. They do what they want to
do and nothing more.
Bartleby took the job as a scrivener to try and find a purpose for his life, but soon after his boss
abandons him, he ends up in jail. At this moment in his life he sees that he truly has nothing. His quest
for purpose as a scrivener has failed. He is at the end of his life, not because he is old or sick
physically, but because he has nothing to live for. While in jail he refuses to eat and soon he dies. His
reason for living died a long time ago, though. His pursuit to be a scrivener was

The Classical Period Of Greek Art
The beautiful Three Sided Relief , also known as the Boston Throne , is a treasure
of the Museum of Fine Arts, as it is an original relief from the Early Classical Period of Greek
art. Though it was found in Rome, it is not a Roman copy of the relief, which makes it
incredibly unique. The Three Sided Relief was found in a private villa on via Boncampagni.
The intriguing part of this discovery was that the Three Sided Relief was found in the same
region as the Ludovisi Relief, a relief of a similar proportion, subject matter, and creation
date. The artwork, though found in Rome, is very easily identified as Greek due to the
material used (marble) and also the distinctly Greek style of the relief, containing
reference to both Ionic Greek agriculture and Attic grave reliefs. Greeks used their art
much more religiously than the Romans, who used it more for political propaganda
purposes. Artwork to the Greeks was used to honor their gods and decorate the temples
they erected to celebrate their gods.
The main face of the Three Sided Relief depicts a winged boy in the nude standing in
the center of the relief, and holding up a large balance. There are three large holes cut into
the relief, one in each wing of the boy and another in his chest. These holes were made to
receive the ends of tenons, proving that the now lost beam was made of marble, not bronze.
The two pans of the balance are still attached to the relief, as they are anchored to the

Case 6.2 Economic Analysis
6.2 Economic Analysis The goal of the economic analysis was to determine the increase in inspections
per year, translate that information into dollars, and determine how long until the cost of the
application is recovered in inspection value. It was estimated that this application would save 6 hours
per week. In a 16 week Co op work term, usually 14 weeks would be spent inspecting. This means 84
hours per year will be saved by this application. At approximately 1 hour per inspection, this will
increase the number of inspections per year by 84; a percent increase of 27.63%. The next goal was to
determine a cost per crossing without the application. For this, 2016 costs were used (MHI, 2017)
except accommodation costs, as the 2016 accommodation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this is a large sum of dollars, even if the application prevents a single crossing collision the
systemic cost savings would be undoubtedly worth it; let alone the value of a human life. However,
systemic costs aside, RPP still must produce $70,840. If this can be afforded, it is recommended the
application be built and objectives 5 7 completed. It is also recommended that RPP, if unable to afford
the cost of building the application, explore the feasibility of sharing the costs across provincial or
other jurisdictions. This would involve re updating the application database to include the other
jurisdictions data and to include any other attributes that may be desired to be collected. This would
likely be comparatively little work to the application design while reducing the cost to RPP a
significant quantity. This would also result in greater cross jurisdictional data and methodological
consistency. Another possible mode of action that could be taken by RPP would be to find other
programs similar to Smart Client that can be developed for less financial commitment. It could be
possible that the application design for Smart Client could be compatible with other programs or could
be used as a blueprint to create an application from scratch. Even if this application design was unable
be directly used, it would still constitute a guideline for another application

Major Themes In The 5th Wave By Rick Yancey
The author of the The 5th Wave, Rick Yancey, had several prominent themes. Three were more vital;
first, war cannot change who a person really is at their core , second, people are defined by the choices
they make ,and third, family is worth living for . These are the best and most important recurring
themes of The 5th Wave. The first theme, war cannot change who a person really is at their core .
Throughout the book, there were several incidences where this theme was important. For example,
Ben tries to make Ringer smile despite being in the middle of the end of the world. When Cassie and
Sammy reunite, he goes back to his five year old self even though he was in boot camp for months,
and lastly Cassie and Evan flirt with each other and interact with each other like it is high school.
Ringer makes an agreement with Ben that if she teaches him to shoot, Ben will step down as squad
leader. When they go to the range, Ringer tells Ben how horrible he shoots, then he retorts with a
comment and his best smile. I give her my best smile. Before the alien Armageddon happened, I was
known for my smile...But it has absolutely no effect on Ringer, (Page 249).This proves that even
though the alien Armageddon is happening while they speak, he is still the same person as he was
before the invasion, a high school jock hitting on a girl, he has not changed. Cassie retrieves Sammy
from the infinite sea of children and finds that Ben Parish is still alive. Cassie and Ben need to

Rudd s Apology
The media message which has been chosen is Kevin Rudd s Apology to Australia s Indigenous
Peoples speech. On Wednesday the 12th of February 2008, Australia s prime minister, at the time,

communities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in Australia. In this speech, Kevin Rudd, the
Australian prime minister is giving a painstaking apology to the stolen generations and the aboriginals
for their sorrow, pain and loss. After many years of suffering Rudd brings up this sensitive topic and is

Just months after Kevin Rudd s apology in 2008, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper publicly
apologised to native Canadians for the long time government policy of taking aboriginal children
away from their families and cultures. Just like Australia s Stolen Generation , from the 19th century
until the late mid 1970s, more than 150,000 Canadian aboriginal children were required to attend state
funded Christian schools as part of a program to strip them of their native culture and assimilate them
into Canadian society. In the apology it was said, We now recognize that it was wrong to separate
children from rich and vibrant cultures and traditions, and that it created a void in many lives and
communities and we apologize, (Cbsnews.com, 2015). Then in 2013, US Senators Dan Inouye, Byron
Dorgan, Daniel Aka and Same Brownback championed a Joint Resolution in Congress the Apology to
Native Peoples of the United States. American President, Barrack Obama when he was first re elected
presidency acknowledged the importance of the Apology to Native Peoples and his support for it. He
said, These cases serve as a reminder of the importance of not glossing over the past or ignoring the
past, even as we work together to forge a brighter future. That s why, last year, I signed a resolution,
passed by both parties in Congress, finally recognizing the sad and painful chapters in our shared

A Day Of Celebration And Honor
The setting was January 1937. Nazism was escalating and there were whispers of another Great War
on the horizon. The Dutch people were holding on to the hope that their neutrality would be honored
as it was after the last Great War . Although, this was not to be the case, this day was a day of
celebration and honor. The ten Booms were a well respected family that lived in the Dutch city of
Haarlem, as their fathers had before them. The family operated a small watch shop from the first floor
of their home on Bartheljorisstraat Street. Their home, known locally as the Beje, had been in their
family for generations. The family had gathered to celebrate the hundred year anniversary of opening
the watch shop. This was a great day to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the ten Booms residence it would never have crossed their minds as to whether they should open
their doors to ones in need. Even before the war, the family had raised eleven foster children in a
Christian home with morals, values and integrity (21). As it was to unfold, the ten Booms became
increasingly involved in the underground movement in an attempt to save Jews from Hitler s cruel
eugenics movement. Pickwick assisted the ten Booms to find places of hiding from the Nazi death
camps, food cards to sustain them, and aided in the set up of alarms and security around the house.
The ten Booms didn t begrudge the Jews their religion, though different from their own. They
embraced it and merely did the right thing. However, on February 28, 1944, the ten Boom family was
betrayed and the Beje was raided. The six people in hiding were able to escape into the upstairs hiding
space in time due to all of the practice drills, alarms and such to ensure their safety. However, the ten
Boom family members were caught and taken in for interrogation by the Nazis. Corrie, Casper,
Willem, Betsie, Nollie, and her husband Peter van Woerden were then imprisoned during this Gestapo
raid on the Beje. The six family members were transferred from the Haarlem jail to the Scheveningen
prison. From there, Corrie and Betsie are transported by train to the Vught Concentration Camp. On

Sustainable Development Of Private Enterprise
The primary objective of these two books is the sustainable development of private enterprise, and
despite fact that they have been in existence for a couple of years since production, the content and
key topics remain extremely pertinent to current arguments about sustainability of the environment,
and climatic change. The commitment made by the two books is best comprehended by viewing them
in connection to the idea of sustainable development.
The two books begin by a thought of sustainability that does not debilitate but rather is perfect and
well matched with capitalism, fully supports it and does not threat a wage labor scheme of producing
products for profit. According to John Ikerd s book Sustainable Capitalism: A Matter of Common
Sense tries to challenge, the inherent lack of sustainability in the neoclassical paradigm. It also
supports a new method for accomplishing maintainable capitalism. According to Ikerd (2005),
neoclassical economic matters are the reason behind the absence of sustainability in the United States
agricultural sector, and the broader American economy. Along these lines, he attempts to build up
other economics of sustainability in view of standards of living frameworks that are self sufficient and
fit for regeneration. Ikerd (2005) he claims that sustainability is considered to be the most obvious
aspect by those firmly associated with the earth (on the same page) for which, in his view, he is
appropriately qualified, having been brought up

  • 2. Reputation And Social Status In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde The Importance of Reputation and Social Status in the Victorian Era In this essay, I am going to stereotype the ideals of the Victorian era and use this knowledge to examine Robert Stevenson s, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Oscar Wilde s, The Importance of Being Earnest. The paper will continue to argue how and why Jack and Dr. Jekyll were influenced by their ideals to improve their reputation and their social status. The Victorian era influenced the lives of Jack and Dr. Jekyll in their attempts to achieve a good reputation and high social status. Reputation was one of the many defining factors of the everyday life of Victorian era high, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the town, he was Earnest, a well respected upper class citizen while in the town, he was Jack, a man with no family and a poor social status. He was greatly influenced by Victorian ideals such as a perfect reputation. In the book, he lies about his name in order to be viewed as a greater man and so his lover, Gwendolen, will marry him. She believes that she could only ever be married to a man named Earnest. A major theme in The Importance of Being Earnest is social status. When Jack proposes to Gwendolen, Lady Bracknell responds by saying, You can hardly imagine that I and Lord Bracknell would dream of allowing our only daughter a girl brought up with the utmost care to marry into a cloak room and form an alliance with a parcel... • 3. The Laws That Impact Hiring Practices Three Laws that Impact Hiring Practices After reading JetBlue Airways: Starting from Scratch I considered different aspects of the case and realized there are certain employment laws that JetBlue should be aware of to guarantee that they are following state and government laws that were enacted to protect the rights of others. The three laws identified are the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, and American with Disabilities Act. These detailed laws contain information to assist JetBlue tremulously in their hiring practices and eliminate the possibility of a lawsuit being bought against them. In the meanwhile, compliance with these laws are obligatory and heavy penalties can be imposed if they are not observed by JetBlue. It will affect their image and caused them to be viewed as a company with faulty hiring practices and one who does not comply with the laws set in place therefore felonious charges may be bought upon them. The law with the highest influence on opportunity employment equality for JetBlue is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Therefore, under Civil Rights Act, it will be unlawful for JetBlue to differentiate during the process of hiring, firing, promoting, or rewarding an employee in areas based on certain things such as race, religion, or national origin. Per the Civil Rights Act retaliation is prohibited against any employee who participates in an investigation against a company. JetBlue would need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Allusions In Buffy The Vampire Slayer Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a very popular show to teens and adults alike. The show s screenwriter, Joss Whedon, studied literature in college, and therefore, the show has layered episodes with literary elements like symbolism, metaphors, and allusions. The show is easily very relatable to teenagers . Buffy expresses teenage drama in a supernatural way that is interesting to watch. Buffy is also known for its dialogue ,but this popular opinion is the reason why Whedon wrote the episode Hush . He was tired of hearing that a critical part of the series was the dialogue so he wrote an episode that had silence fourteen minutes into the episode.. The original airing of Hush received 6.6 million views and the episode was nominated for an Emmy. In the episode Hush , there are multiple instances where the characters show that words are not as important as actions. Buffy is the main character of the series and in this season she has a love interest named Riley. While it is clear they both have feelings for each other, they are terrible at communicating. For one, Buffy and Riley both lie about their true identities to each other. Buffy is the slayer, which means she protects mankind from monsters like vampires and werewolves. After a class discussion, the couple begin to talk. During the conversation, Buffy accidentally tells Riley she will be patrolling later that day, which she quickly covers up. While Buffy is the Slayer, Riley works for the government, protecting people as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Clyne s Revision of Grice s Maxims Essay Grice s Maxims have been criticised for being too Anglo centric. Michael Clyne proposes revisions to the four maxims in his 1994 book Intercultural Communication at Work. Do Clyne s revisions of this model go far enough in universally accounting for intercultural conversation? Why or why not? Grice s General Cooperative Principle has been under continuous debate for the past three decades. It is mainly through the maxims that Grice s paradigm has been challenged as highly ethnocentric, however such readings may tend to take the maxims too literally rather than as reference points for language interchange (Allan as cited in Clyne, 1994, p. 11). There is some agreement in this, but as suggested by Mey (1994, p. 74), the principle and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In such cases, there is a clash between Grice s maxims and the pragmatic rules of conversation, which are culturally sensitive. For example, when being offered a drink, a typical Chinese person would automatically say no the first time, while expecting the offer to be made at least two or three times more. This resembles a kind of phatic language communication; saying no, but not really meaning no. In this sort of situation, if someone doesn t adhere to the cultural norm choosing to follow Grice s maxims instead, then they would sound odd and out of place. The above example demonstrates that Grice s maxims aren t relevant in all contexts as they clash with certain cultural values systems. Many linguists (Clyne, 1994; Hymes, 1986; Loveday, 1983; Walsh, 2009) have picked up on this discrepancy between theory and data, claiming that the maxims are only relevant to the English speaking Western world. In particular, Clyne (1994) has pointed out that they have limited relevance to cultures where content and knowledge are core values. For example, speakers of Malagasy, whose form of co operation seems to consist in making their contributions as opaque, convoluted and non perspicuous as possible (Keenan as cited in Mey, 1994, p. 74) could be seen as flouting the Maxim of Quantity. This is because information, especially new information gives the holder a certain amount of prestige, thus Malagasy people tend to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thesis: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the Prime Minister of Canada and evaluate his or her powers to identify whether or not these powers are limited in any way to fulfill the proper role of Prime Minister. • 7. Descriptive Essay About Seneca Rocks Somewhere Among the Hills Among the Blue Ridge Mountains in West Virginia, Seneca Rocks remains a place that values preservation of nature, its history, a family oriented environment, and the safety and well being of those who visit. I have visited Seneca Rocks at least three times in my 18 years and it is a very common place in my hometown, therefore, my personal experience helps me determine its values. Seneca Rocks is a bare white sandstone sheet of rocks with sheer cliffs, towering 900 feet above the surrounding valley in the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia s Panhandle. This giant slab of rocks has been there for 440 million years. The rock sits along U.S Route 33 and is about 34 miles east of Elkins. (Bob Downing, Akron ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whetsell. (Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal (MCT) West Virginia was chosen for this training school because of the terrain was similar to Italy and its Apennine Mountains which was where the soldiers were headed next. Roughly 180 men and officers went through this school every two weeks to learn alpine combat techniques. The training included easy rock scrambling to extreme tension with pitons. It also included the use of assault ropes and pulleys. Each group made two tactical night climbs on unfamiliar rocks. (Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal (MCT) Those who participated in this school camped along the river north of Seneca Rocks. Each climbing instructor had a total of ten men to train. At the end of the first week the instructor had to drop the weakest climbers and the remaining six got an additional week of advanced climbing. (Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal (MCT) Most people don t know this history lesson of Seneca Rocks. Climbers today have still come across rusting soft iron pitons that were hammered into the Tuscarora quartzite. This isn t surprising considering more than 75,000 pitons were reportedly installed on Seneca Rocks by the soldier climbers in 1943 1944. One area at Seneca Rocks has been dubbed the Face of Thousand Pitons. (Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal (MCT) Another key value to Seneca Rocks is having a family oriented environment. • 8. Questions and Answers on Privacy Laws List and describe at least three (3) technologies that allow an individual to research citizens private data The internet, cookies, and databases are three technologies which can potentially allow individuals to locate private information. Overtly, online web based transactions require specific personal identifiers to be yielded by the purchaser. Through online social media, blogs, and web posts, private information intended for a selective audience can easily be researched by the mass market. Equally, and practiced in commercial settings, transacting on the Internet allows other data to be recorded on the private transaction that is less evident by the purchaser. For example, cookies, store data on behavior, such as which web pages are visited by the individual and how frequently they are visited. In addition cookies can also reveal online shopping behavior. These cookies are then analyzed by the company to determine potentially targeted advertising initiatives. Databases, by virtue of their size, presents additional complications in regards to private date. There is so much information stored in many databases worldwide that an individual has no practical means of knowing of or controlling all of the information about themselves that can potentially be accessed by others. Such information could potentially be sold to others for profit and/or be used for purposes not known to or sanctioned by the individual concerned. In addition, dishonest personnel can easily ... • 9. Significance Of Boston Tea Party Boston Tea Party was a major event in American history because this act of American colonial disobedience served as a protest against taxation. British Parliament adjusted import duties with the passage of the Tea Act on May 10, 1773. The Tea Act granted the British East India Company Tea a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. Meetings were held and decisions were made. Taxes has been raised so much and so many people did not like that. People did not like the idea of wasting money and paying taxes for tea. As of why the parliament didn t get much respect. Tea crates were being sent in and out. While this was happening all the colonists that were paying taxes, were also paying for most shipments and for the tea to be going to the parliament. For them to be enjoying the tea while the colonists were paying for it and the expenses were so high and the tea in stores were so high as well because it was so popular. The Parliament became selfish because once they sold the tea in stores it went to them as well and so no one bought it. Both authors talk about Sacramento during two different time periods. Joan Didion talks about the mid century and Ernesto Galarza talks about the early 20th century. Although both author s perspective of Sacramento differs from era to era, there are differences in certain characteristics described by both authors. At the moment of its waking Sacramento lost...its character... (Didion 173). In other words, Didion is pointing out how Sacramento is becoming more immoral as urbanization and industrialization occur. However, what is most interesting is how Didion expresses Sacramento s loss of character through her own experiences. For instance, Didion describes her wonderful memories basking in the Californian sun, rivers, fields and valleys as a child, showcasing the real natural Sacramento. However, later on as a n adult when she returns to Sacramento, Didion finds that the Sacramento she has been seeking is no longer there, as a result of industrial development: It is hard to find California now, unsettling to wonder how much of it was merely imagined or improvised; melancholy to realize how much of anyone s memory no true memory at all...I have an indelibly vivid memory , for example, of how Prohibition affected the hop growers around Sacramento... (Didion 57) In the excerpt above Didion expresses how she was unable to reconnect with the California she grew up with because of all the changes it has suffered. She also mentions prohibition, which by definition is a reform movement that outlawed drinking because it s effects on the home, in order to really capture how increasing industrialization led to the gradual loss of the traditional Californian way of life. • 11. Maya Case Study Essay Having read and researched Maya s case study the first question I asked myself was, what is an Adaptation within the human body? My understanding is that an adaptation within the body is the long term physiological changes in response to frequent training, allowing the body to meet new demands and help in the additional stresses that are placed on the body itself. In the case of Maya, I have studied the chronic adaptations of Maya s muscular and cardiorespiratory system as a response to her three months training and indeed her target goal to return to her preferred sport of tennis. I believe that although Maya would be training in the correct way, playing tennis again as well as the exercise regime she has designed would enable her to return to a good level of fitness, and the standard that she had previously played. • 13. Wuthering Heights And Thrushcross Knighte Analysis Is Wuthering Heights as nice a place as Thrushcross Grange? (Brontë 329). That seems to be the question quickly answered in the start of the novel, Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë, and the answer is very clearly: No. In Wuthering Heights, contrast between the two main and unique places, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, helps to define and separate the lifestyles of the main characters. Wuthering Heights is distinctively more dark and chaotic and is full of troubles that make it seem a much darker place, while Thrushcross Grange is a brighter and more peaceful house. Brontë is able to use the two contrasting places to help support the drastically different character personalities, whether it be troublesome Catherine or her peaceful and calmer husband, Edgar. The use of the drastically different places, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, are vital to the novel because they offer contrast in the physical houses and define the people living in them and are meaningful to the novel by providing a deep and drastic connection to each place for the reader to separate and understand the characters thoroughly. The difference between Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange is literally like night and day in the sense of drastic environmental differences that lead to a vivid contrast between the two places. As Lockwood first comes upon Wuthering Heights, he was greeted by the dark contrast from the surrounding town of Gimmerton. Wuthering Heights is notably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A significant question that is asked about offenders is how can they be prevented from re offending? There have been a number of therapies and treatments developed by psychologists in order to change offending behaviour. Three main ones are; behaviour modification (token economies), anger management and social skills training (SST). Therefore all effects of this treatment will be forgotten meaning being punished for behaviour may be more effective in the outside world and in an institution. Social skills training is a cognitive behavioural treatment based on the assumption that offending is related to deficits in social skills. Techniques used in SST often vary but most involve modelling and role play alongside instruction in skills and feedback on performance. There is a number of studies that suggest SST leads to improvement in targeted social skills but what is less clear is whether the improvements remain in the long term. Spence and Marzillier found that effects are visible after three months but disappear after six and Goldstein et al found that only 15 20% of offenders applied their skills to other situations. I feel that SST is not effective in terms of stopping people from re offending but it is a way of helping people cope with their emotions which more than just prisoners need to be able to do. Has it been life changing to know the day will be amazing or to feel as though working like a dog and getting nowhere? Every human must go to work to make money and provide for their family. If not, they will not live a happy, successful life. Their kids will be miserable as they may not have the luxury of clean clothes and food to feed their infinite hunger. Millions of people have jobs, but may not feel valued or excited to go to them. They may feel overworked and undervalued with no purpose, or may not have a strong support system in their workplace. Human nature can both positively and negatively affect the workplace environment. Supervisors are very important towards the workplace environment. Without them, workers may slack off and not get the job done as efficiently as needed. To be a well liked supervisor, they need to care and understand their employees. If a supervisor acts like a robot and just gives orders, the employees will not respect them as much as if they cared and asked them how their day is going and what they can do to help. This will give workers a feeling of comfort while at the job. The supervisors also need to recognize the hard work that is completed by the employees. This will make workers feel valued and purposeful. For instance, reports of high methane levels were not addressed appropriately. Instead of investing in safety procedures, the managers let their employees work in a dangerous environment. Interestingly enough, there is a widespread belief that some writers develop their creativity and knack for writing through suffering from a mental illness. This belief stems from past research based on the relationship between madness and creativity, especially in the writing field. Katherine M. Thomas and Marshall Duke wrote the article, Depressed writing: Cognitive distortions in the works of depressed and non depressed poets and writers. Their article focuses on digging deeper into the relationship between madness and writing by making an in depth analysis of writing samples from depressed writers versus the writing samples of those who weren t. Duke and Thomas found that there is a need for analyzing works of writing because it may provide understanding in the relationship, which will lead to an understanding of depression and mental illness. Due to this widely known relationship, some may look at mental illness in a positive light. This relationship may cause people to look at the distortions as simply art; thus, diminishing the severity of mental illness. Although that statement in itself can be dissected and analyzed, the main focus at hand is that of line 10a of the Euthyphro. For someone unfamiliar with the current situation in the Euthyphro, it is probably best to summarize and explained this particular passage. Not only will explaining the dialogue shed light to the passage but it will also help explain the Euthyphro Paradox. To begin with, Euthyphro and Socrates both meet each other in Athens in front of the court house. They ended up starting a conversation. They come to learn why the other is there. Political candidate have to relate to the catholic bipartisan party in order to win an election. This undermines the idea of the separation of church and state. The general public believes that no child should live in unsafe circumstances. That means no fetus should be knowingly born into an unhealthy environment. This well known version of Cinderella was not his first take of this tale, which may be how it became so famous: he managed all the kinks out of the tale for it to be child and adult friendly. Our presumption is that human activity is mixed in its impact on creation; sometimes productive and caring, but often irresponsible, avoidable and sinful. The command from God to tend and keep the earth has never passed away from the fall man; this means that man still bears responsibility of keeping and tending the earth. Therefore, lack of concern and failure to take action carefully as followers of Christ is a poor reflection to the rest of the world. In this particular case, we take responsibility for the damage that we have done to God s cosmic revelation and pledge to take a resolute stance in preserving and protecting the creation over which we have been assigned responsibility by God Himself. During the first decades of the federal government s Indian boarding schools, stories of morbidity and mortality among students were prevalent. At the turn of the century, federal Indian schools were nearing their 30th anniversary of existence. As the 20th century dawned, the government rapidly filled these schools, especially the boarding facilities, beyond their intended capacities. As a result, student health was endangered as children known to be in, or suspected of, poor health were placed in the schools in order to maintain optimum efficiency (DeJong, 2007). The rationale for choosing cultural rather than physical genocide was often economic. A million dollars would need to be spent to kill an Indian in warfare, ... • 35. Caroline Bird Education In the modern world, the value and the relevance of college education is a controversial issue. People hold varied views on this issue: some people are of the view that college education is the only mean to succeed in life and to achieve one s goals in life; some other people think that the value of college education lies in the fact that college education offers the young learners a conducive environment to grow and to be able to make mature decisions about themselves later in life. There are other people, like Caroline Bird, whose article we are going to critique in this paper, who see college education as a sheer waste of time and money for the majority of people. This paper focuses on Bird s article College is a Waste of Time and Money , the paper analyses and critiques the arguments that Bird offers in support of her view that college education is a sheer waste of time and money for the majority of people. The second strength of Bird s argument lies in the fact that Bird claims that college education may not have as high financial returns as many people think; Bird is right in her claim that financially, in the modern world, in some instances investing in college may be the dampest form of investment. • 36. Democracies and Success in War Essay Democracies and Success in War Introduction Democratic governments have spread quickly around the world since the end of the Cold War and fall of the Soviet Union. Democracy has become one of the most desired regime types amongst states and is contributed to fostering wealth, stability, and even peace. Dan Reiter and Allan Stam argue that democracies are the most successful in war or military combat. In their book, Democracies at War, Stam and Reiter argue that after observing conflicts since the 1800 s, democratic governments tend to be more selective in choosing conflicts to participate in and democracies also have a propensity to win more often than authoritarian regimes. The purpose of this paper is to present a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The case of Israel was chosen for two reasons. First, Stam and Reiter mention Israel in their book and argue that this state is a prime example of how democracies are better equipped, trained, motivated, and successful in war. Michael Desch questions this claim by Stam and Reiter over Israel, especially the argument that they fight more adequately and the soldiers of democracies are better trained. These conflicting commits over Israel lays the foundation of an adequate need for a case study to see if Israel is, as Stam and Reiter claims, more successful at war because they are a democracy, or Desch s counter argument that Israel fought so well because they were fighting for survival, not because of their regime. The second reason why Israel has been chosen as the case study for this paper is because they have arguably never lost a war since independence and seem to improve in conflict through the years. The greatest contribution I hope to make in this paper is a deeper understanding of how democracies choose and fight wars. Due to time constraints, this paper is only addressing one case study that deals with two wars. As in any case study the results are limited to that particular case. However, the research creates more in depth examination over the arguments by Stam and Reiter and, in a more general sense, attempts to analyze propositions made by democratic theorist. Being a young, single mother, she had to overcome difficult obstacles to get us to where we are today. Life was tough and there were many times where she just wanted to give up, but she was determined to turn her life around for the better. She ingrained a lifetime worth of advice into my head but it was her actions that taught me that the struggles I will face now will make me stronger in the end. As a senior in high school, my mother was the colonel of the drill team and was preparing for college when life threw a major curve ball her way. Once she realized she was pregnant with me, she had to change her lifestyle entirely. With no support, financially or emotionally from my father, my mother had to do it all on her own. This greatly affected my mother because even to this day she is still playing a role as both a mother and father figure, and has never complained or failed to follow through with any of her responsibilities. Raising me was especially hard for my mother because she lacked financial stability. There were times when she didn t even have enough money for a bottle of formula. As a new leader these strategies are ones that I will have to work on before I fully employ them. Two of these strategies that would work best with me are developing mutual interests with clients and becoming a collaborator (Gilley, 2006). Developing interests with clients allows me to ask open ended questions that help to search for common interests. These interests help build rapport, which can help me develop new ideas or improvements for the organization. Becoming a collaborator includes tailoring interactions to the audience (Gilley, 2006). I am constantly doing this because not everyone is going to react the same way, want the same information, or care about the subject. When common interests are found the relationship and interaction between myself and others will become more productive or meaningful. Outside Situations All of these strategies can be used outside of work as well. This, I believe, is because humans need interactions and relationships to be happy. One does not have to be cut and dry at all times. It is finding a balance between professionalism and normalcy. In former novels, when faced with a moment of devastation, the character divided from their previous self, and in turn gained control. From there, the character is faced with yet another unfavorable situation, but this time they are able to overcome it in their new powerful state. This is evident when the lawyer says, He ran a day and night line, copying by sun light and by candle light. (108) This job is all he had in his life. • 45. The Classical Period Of Greek Art The beautiful Three Sided Relief , also known as the Boston Throne , is a treasure of the Museum of Fine Arts, as it is an original relief from the Early Classical Period of Greek art. Though it was found in Rome, it is not a Roman copy of the relief, which makes it incredibly unique. The Three Sided Relief was found in a private villa on via Boncampagni. The intriguing part of this discovery was that the Three Sided Relief was found in the same region as the Ludovisi Relief, a relief of a similar proportion, subject matter, and creation date. The artwork, though found in Rome, is very easily identified as Greek due to the material used (marble) and also the distinctly Greek style of the relief, containing reference to both Ionic Greek agriculture and Attic grave reliefs. Greeks used their art much more religiously than the Romans, who used it more for political propaganda purposes. Artwork to the Greeks was used to honor their gods and decorate the temples they erected to celebrate their gods. The main face of the Three Sided Relief depicts a winged boy in the nude standing in the center of the relief, and holding up a large balance. There are three large holes cut into the relief, one in each wing of the boy and another in his chest.
