What we will do and why
A 'lossless' learning process
A scenario-based workshop:
our scenario is based on supporting disabled students
5 minutes
3. R U Noteworthy? Crowdsourcing note making strategies that use social media
Scenario
You are a group of students on the PG Cert/PG CAP tasked with writing a briefing on how the University should
respond to the removal of Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) funding for manual note takers. You will need to
consider students who learn in a range of learning environments.
Your group has decided to make notes from key documents and develop these using social media. This will enable
the group to work collaboratively.
You will work together creatively to look at different options for:
• capturing, recording and gathering notes from the individual documents;
• summarising and re-shaping the notes; and
• revising the notes, as appropriate, so they can be shared with and make sense to others.

Listen, Watch, Search and Learn
Using one or more of the provided sources and your own tablet device*
Capture, record or gather your notes
We want you to use social media or digital media to capture and curate. You need to have
your notes recorded in a digital form that can be accessed by others in your team.
Using social, digital or smart media (e.g. apps) find a way to capture your notes
Social media means that collaborative note making can enhance learning
On your wall poster explain your strategy
10 minutes
5. R U Noteworthy? Crowdsourcing note making strategies that use social media
“So…”
Reduce and summarise what you have learnt
Your task is to learn by editing down or reducing what you have so you have a set of really
sharp notes.
Using social, digital or smart media (e.g. apps) find a way to reduce and reshape your notes
Social media means that collaborative note making can enhance learning
Think ahead – why, how and where will you be in 6 months time when you need these notes?
On your wall poster explain your strategy
10 minutes
6. R U Noteworthy? Crowdsourcing note making strategies that use social media
All present and correct
You have been asked to present your notes using social media. Let’s hope they are coherent
and make sense!
Tidy up your notes and put them into a form that will make sense to you and your team
members when you come back to them in 6 months time.
Using social, digital or smart media (e.g. apps) find a a way that works for all of you.
Social media means that collaborative note making can enhance learning
10 minutes

Revise
Give your nicely presented notes to another team
You have 5 minutes to revise. The judges will ask each team three questions.
For every question you get right you will score 5 points for your own team and 5 for
the team who created the notes.
10 minutes total
8. R U Noteworthy? Crowdsourcing note making strategies that use social media
Score & review
Each team to look at the wall posters/padlets of the other teams. Distribute 5
points amongst the other teams for Rounds 1, 2, and 3.

Discuss
To what extent can we advocate the use of social media for note making?
We will record this discussion (of course)
Together will will contruct our last slide: 5 key points on social media note
making

R U Noteworthy? Crowdsourcing note making strategies that use social media
This is a different take on social media for learning. Join us in a relay challenge that will examine the life of a note. A series of challenges will be set to participants who will come armed with their favourite technology. We will take you through a rapid series of learning activities to capture some notes, reduce these notes, recite them, revise from them and succeed!
Points will be awarded for the most effective solution in the room using all the apps and media you have to hand. And points mean kudos! (since it’s the holiday season, there may even be prizes! Ed)
Sheffield Hallam University is leading an open consortium that aims to offer students a range of note making strategies and we think social media offers the solution. Prove it!
Plan
Three teams
Workshop aim: to crowdsource note making strategies that use social media.
Aim: To score the most kudos points in response to the noteworthy relay
Personal aim: to learn from each other about the power of social media for learning through the key act of note making
Team formation – teams will choose one of the following ‘identity’ headings. This word will be their key decision making word and team name:
Smart
Flex
Social
Connected
Team roles using favourite word method
Captain: “This is what we’ll do”
Creative: “Or…”
Shaper: “What exactly does that look like then?”
Builder: “And…”
Challenger: “I’m not sure I agree…”
Workshop Resources
2 Abstracts, 2 YouTube Clips, and 2 Slideshares on Social Media for Learning
Timer+ app
Wall poster flip charts or huddle white boards
Flip chart pens
Team badges
Points mean prizes
Each team has to award 5 points each round to be distributed amongst the other teams in any way they like.
The team that accrues the most wins.
Introduction (5 minutes): What we will do and why
Round 1 (15 minutes): “Catch me if you can” Listen and learn, search and learn, look and learn.
