TIME
This is an exam unit, with one 90 minute exam paper. The exam is on Thursday 16th January in the
morning.
Half of the exam is short questions – half of the exam is one long planning task
We’ll start with looking through an example of the paper – you can do a lot of it straight away.
There are two key issues that will come up with most of the questions…
1. You need to think about what the core issues of different social
media platforms are
a. Instagram is about images and photography (and video)
b. YouTube is about video (and music)
c. WhatsApp is about short messages with social contacts
and about sharing links (and images)
d. Facebook kind of brings everything together…
2. You need to think about who is using the social media platform
and what they’re using it for.
a. Producers – To develop ideas? To collect data about
audiences? To link to other material
b. Audiences – To watch stuff? To learn what’s going on?
To share their own ideas? To connect with other fans?
Even though we haven’t done any work on this yet, I think you can answer most of Section A of the
paper pretty well. It’s calling on things you know as users of Social Media, and the things you know
should see you through to the pass mark on the short questions.
The new learning – the detailed information and some conceptual stuff – is based around Business
more than Media, and particularly around marketing
We’re going to do a marketing unit alongside some of this…
We’ll talk through the questions on the paper and
you can then have a go at answering them
You’re good at this – you’re good at this initial
learning. Where people have dropped down in
final exams it’s because we’re not doing enough,
or the right kind of work, to retain that knowledge
and understanding – that’s what we’re going to
work on
This unit involves working through all the material
fairly quickly and then lots of revisiting and
revising to help hammer it home
Answer the questions on the question paper
Remember to look at the marks for each question,
and the specific instructions.
• What two things
• Name three examples
• Compare this and that
• And the number of marks given gives you a good
idea of how much information they are looking
for
Mark the paper – in discussion around the whole class
Section B – which is always half of the marks and
always involves planning a campaign – pulls together
all of the different things from Section A and asks
you to apply your knowledge and understanding in a
creative way
We will write a Section B answer in detail when we
get there, and work it up, and work out how to
reduce it to notes to help you remember, and
practice writing it in exam conditions. You can pass
this exam with just Section B
BIG PICTURE MY LEARNING
How did this
lesson fit into
your other
lessons?
What is my top
take- away from
the lesson?
Have you contributed to the lesson? Will you be able to improve
next lesson? Do you know what you need to go away and do?
o Do you understand the point
about different social media
platforms having different core
uses?
o Do you understand the point
about producers and
consumers using social media
in different ways?
o Are you confident about what
the core uses of different
social media platforms are?

U6 lesson 1

  • 1. BIG PICTURE Task 1 – Introducing the Unit and Common Misconceptions KEYWORDS Globalisation, Censorship, Platforms LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand the outline of the unit – understand some common misconceptions about the unit content SUCCESS CRITERIA Discussion and short answers about censorship and globalisation Take your seat. Bag under your desk. Have your equipment and planner out. Topic – Unit 6 – Social Media and Globalisation 1. Tell me as many different social media platforms that you can think of. 2. What different things do you use them for? 3. What different things might media professionals use them for?
  • 2. TELL ME STUFF! TAKE ME THROUGH IT… LET ME HAVE A GO… DO I GET IT? 1 2 3 4 5 6 SETTING THE SCENE JOINING UP LEARNING LINKS TO LAST TIME PASSING ON KNOWLEDGE GUIDED PRACTICE & MODELLING INDEPENDENT PRACTICE – APPLYING THE SKILLS TO NEW SITUATIONS ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK PULL IT TOGETHER JOINING UP LEARNING LINKS TO NEXT TIME
  • 3. This is an exam unit, with one 90 minute exam paper. The exam is on Thursday 16th January in the morning. Half of the exam is short questions – half of the exam is one long planning task We’ll start with looking through an example of the paper – you can do a lot of it straight away. There are two key issues that will come up with most of the questions… 1. You need to think about what the core issues of different social media platforms are a. Instagram is about images and photography (and video) b. YouTube is about video (and music) c. WhatsApp is about short messages with social contacts and about sharing links (and images) d. Facebook kind of brings everything together… 2. You need to think about who is using the social media platform and what they’re using it for. a. Producers – To develop ideas? To collect data about audiences? To link to other material b. Audiences – To watch stuff? To learn what’s going on? To share their own ideas? To connect with other fans?
  • 4. Even though we haven’t done any work on this yet, I think you can answer most of Section A of the paper pretty well. It’s calling on things you know as users of Social Media, and the things you know should see you through to the pass mark on the short questions. The new learning – the detailed information and some conceptual stuff – is based around Business more than Media, and particularly around marketing We’re going to do a marketing unit alongside some of this… We’ll talk through the questions on the paper and you can then have a go at answering them You’re good at this – you’re good at this initial learning. Where people have dropped down in final exams it’s because we’re not doing enough, or the right kind of work, to retain that knowledge and understanding – that’s what we’re going to work on This unit involves working through all the material fairly quickly and then lots of revisiting and revising to help hammer it home
  • 5. Answer the questions on the question paper Remember to look at the marks for each question, and the specific instructions. • What two things • Name three examples • Compare this and that • And the number of marks given gives you a good idea of how much information they are looking for
  • 6. Mark the paper – in discussion around the whole class Section B – which is always half of the marks and always involves planning a campaign – pulls together all of the different things from Section A and asks you to apply your knowledge and understanding in a creative way We will write a Section B answer in detail when we get there, and work it up, and work out how to reduce it to notes to help you remember, and practice writing it in exam conditions. You can pass this exam with just Section B
  • 7. BIG PICTURE MY LEARNING How did this lesson fit into your other lessons? What is my top take- away from the lesson? Have you contributed to the lesson? Will you be able to improve next lesson? Do you know what you need to go away and do? o Do you understand the point about different social media platforms having different core uses? o Do you understand the point about producers and consumers using social media in different ways? o Are you confident about what the core uses of different social media platforms are?
