1. Evaluation Question 3 - What kind
of media institution might distribute
your product and why?
2. Distributing my magazine
Bauer Media distribute a lot of magazines which are similar to the magazine that I have created. An
example of a magazine that they distribute is Kerrang! Magazine. Bauer Media also own Kerrang!
Radio and the music TV channel. This means that they get to a wider target audience by choosing
people that like to read or listen to music, either on the TV or radio. Most people know about Kerrang!
because of the production by Bauer Media. This means that they control a large proportion of the
Rock genre style that is being published. They will know what type of audience they are attracting by
taking into account the types of people that are buying the magazine or listening to the music on the
TV or radio. They will also do surveys to find out which type of people do this.
My product is similar to the Kerrang! Magazine because I have the same target audience that they do
which is teenagers that are into the rock genre. If Bauer Media were to distribute my magazine, they
would be able to follow the same techniques that they follow to publicise the Kerrang! Magazine as
they both have the same types of target audience. This would be useful as they already know a lot
about the type of audience that will by buying my magazine. Bauer Media own a lot of the music
magazines that are being published for a lot of different genres. Although Kerrang! Magazine is
similar to my magazine, publishing my magazine shouldn't be a problem as people tend to like new
things and my magazine can get out to a wider audience, which will generate more money for Bauer.
Since Bauer Media know a lot about their target audience for this specific genre of music, this would
benefit my magazine largely as it could become popular as soon as it is released. This would also
help in constructing a magazine which would be perfect for my target audience which means that they
may attract a larger audience than if it was published with a different company.
3. Production of my magazine
Development
This includes flat plans and designs of the magazine.
Copy editing
This involves giving the work to an editor to improve my magazine from the formatting, layout, style
and text.
Graphic design
This is where the graphics for the magazine are created.
Production
This is where the final touches to the magazine are added.
Printing
The magazine is printed and ready to be distributed.
Marketing and distribution
The magazine is then distributed to retailers and marketed on advertisements.
4. Distributing my magazine
Since my magazine would be distributed to a larger mainstream audience, I would use large magazine
stores such as HMV, WHSmiths, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and other supermarkets to distribute my
magazine. I have also provided a subscription service to the magazine where people can get the
magazine delivered to their closest distributor and it's kept for them in order to make sure that they
get a copy every month without having to worry about them being sold out. This is a benefit to the
customer because not only are they guaranteed a copy each month so that they never miss an issue,
it would also come to a lower price overall once the magazine has gone up to it's full price after the
introductory price. The customer isn't getting charged any more for postage and packaging than they
would if they were buying it usually in store, as the magazine is just being delivered to the nearest
distributor to their house.
With the evolution of Web 2.0, I have created an online section of my magazine, where people that have
bought the magazine will be able to read up-to-date information on the articles in the magazine, but
they won't be able to read next month's news until they have bought or received their paper copy of
the magazine. This is so that people can't sell their online accounts to others so that they don't have
to pay to read the magazine.
5. Marketing my magazine
Products which are similar to my magazine, such as Kerrang! Magazine, are being advertised through
their own TV channel and radio station, but they are also being advertised on billboards and bus
shelter advertisement boards. These are the best ways that they can advertise their product because
they are not only attracting an audience that already listen to the music on the TV or radio, but they
are also attracting a larger audience by advertising in places that other people might see such as bus
shelters and billboards. They also advertise online, which means that a lot of younger people will see
the advertisements. This would help the marketing as the specific target audience for their magazine
is an average of 17 year olds, most of which, would probably use the internet.
For my magazine, my target audience is pretty much the same as those of the Kerrang! Magazine. This
means that the same advertising strategies that are used on Kerrang!'s products could also be used
on my magazine and they should be very successful. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter
can also be used to advertise and attract a certain type of audience by seeing what type of pages
they like or people they follow. Using social networks also means that people can interact with the
business and submit any suggestions or improvements that they have easily. As well as being
advertised on social networks, the magazine could also be advertised on websites that follow the
same type of music genre as the magazine. They could also advertise on music TV channels, radio
and in other magazines with a similar genre and target audience to mine.
