Question 2
How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
In my magazine the social groups I aimed at
were young adults ranging from the ages of
16-27, male and British. I did this because of
looking at Mixmag’s audience demographics
and seeing that almost three quarters of the
customers who buy the magazine are male
and there average age of their customer was
twenties. Not only this but it puts me into
the target audience and it is the genre I like
which made it easier for me to create it.
For my artists I have only used males
although one artist does take up three of the
shots, this shows that the magazine is
directed at a male audience.
Conventionally being male orientated is
common at is more likely to sell due to it
being more unisex then woman magazines.
My artists are young and up and coming to
create a bit of mystery about them and
appeal to a younger audience.
Shot
types
In all the photos I did the artist is doing a slight
action with the hand. this goes with the theme of
the magazine ‘rave’ and I believe it gives off a lot
of energy and gives a sense of immaturity which
young males will relate to as they don’t want to
grow up. For the front cover and double page
spread I have made the artists look straight at the
camera (direct mode of address) this was done
to create a personal connection between the
reader and the artist. And as the artist- DJ Section
is a young male too it allows there to be more of
a connection with my target audience. The choice
of clothing such as the hats is also very young and
boyish and shows who the magazine is aimed at.
One of the photos where the artist in not looking
at the camera is made to make the artist look shy,
although this not the theme it is another
representation of how young males can feel.
Throughout the magazine I kept with the
same colour scheme of yellow, red and
orange. The vibrant colours used was to
give a dance type and summery feeling
and create energy in the magazine, but
also the colours are very boyish
especially dark green colour of important
titles and believe the high energy
represents my target audience of young
males. The interview on the double page
spread also shows how the artist is still
quite childish and perhaps doesn’t want
to grow up like most males his age. Layout
on the front cover is quite busy and
messy, young males generally aren’t
fussed about having neat symmetrical
covers although the double page spread
layout is a lot more simple and easy for
the audience to read.
Ideology
Throughout the production of the magazine I tried to keep to the reception theory so
the audience can create a connection between themselves and the artists and
attracts them to keep buying the magazine. To do this I used artists who fit the target
audience of my magazine to make it easier for the reader to get a connection with
them. I also kept the magazine very informal and friendly in the writing and the
pictures to make the reader feel more at ease and be in their comfort zone.
