This document discusses how the media product represents different social groups in terms of age, gender, and class.
For age, the product targets 16-24 year olds by using attractive young models in photos and featuring a young male model throughout. The neutral color scheme also appeals to this age group.
For gender, equal numbers of males and females were surveyed so both are represented. The color scheme is gender neutral and images include both males and females.
For class, the product represents social classes ABC1 by pricing at £2.50, using neutral sophisticated colors and fonts, and featuring well-dressed models, creating a working to middle class feel.
2. Age
My media product represents a younger generation as in my survey the every person
who filled it out were in the 16-24 age bracket, so my main aim was to create a media
product that would appeal to this age group.
I have firstly represented this age group by the use of images. All of my pictures feature
young attractive models, as I think this would create a bond between the subject and the
reader and make my magazine more relevant to people of this age. My main story
features a young male model, in which photos of this male run throughout my magazine,
on the front cover, contents page and double page spread and this is another reason I
chose to use a subject who is in this age bracket themselves and my readers can identify
with them. My main model fits into the age stereotype as he is wearing very relatable
clothing, black jeans, a jumper and on trend shoes. He looks fashionable but not too
overstated and he looks like most young people do these days, which is another way in
which the age group can relate to my magazine.
My colour scheme also represents the age group of 16 to 24 year olds. I think the use of
the neutral, calmer colours is something that young people can relate to. The idea of my
whole house style was to appeal to a niche market, those of that age group that don’t
want to read a magazine with bright, in your face colours will buy into my product and I
think there is many young people who this would appeal to. It’s not boring and plain like
a magazine that is targeting the older generation and its not messy and too colourful like
one that is aimed at children, I think I have struck a balance and found a colour scheme
that represents my target audience well.
3. Gender
From my survey I found that an equal number of males and females read these media
products so I need to appeal to and represent both genders in my magazine.
I feel I have done this through the colour scheme. I used a colour which I believe to be
gender neutral, the pale blues and the dark blues are not specific to one gender and I
don’t feel like it is too masculine or too feminine for either gender to dislike it.
I have taken images of both males and females too, so it is not female or male oriented
and my readers can relate to the magazine whichever gender they may be. The image of
the girl (bottom right) I think is quite femme fatal, as she is made up and showing some
skin. I have made it so she doesn’t look too provocative but enough to capture male
attention as well as female attention as they can relate with her. I used images or young
males in fashionable clothes, which again I think both genders would like, as other males
can enjoy the fashion and identify with them, and women can appreciate them as well as
I have used typically attractive young male models.
4. Class
My magazine represents the social class ABC1 as the majority of the population are in this category and I have priced my
magazine accordingly. I feel that pricing my media product at £2.50 is affordable but not too cheap so it suggests a higher
class group and a certain sophistication.
I think my colour scheme and my house style also represents this class as the colours are neutral and not messy or too
bright and in your face and so does suggest an elegance and a more grown up feel. I have also used quite a sophisticated
font, it is fairly serif but not to the extent that it is illegible and I think this looks really quite classy, again representing the
social class I am targeting with my more up market media product. My models in my images are all well dressed and well
presented which I think creates a working to middle class atmosphere, one that my readers can identify with.
