Community Case Study
Respondents Carmen Marine Cooperative and Cagan Management Group, Inc. (Respondents) deny
that they retaliated against Complainant based on a previous Complaint filed at the Commission or
failed to accommodate based on her son s disability. Respondents state that Complainant and her
husband applied for membership in the Cooperative in April of 1999, for a two bedroom apartment for
themselves and their son. They were approved and on May 13, 1999, Complainant and her husband
purchased their membership. Soon after, Complainant, her husband, and minor son Anthony moved
into unit 1409.

Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations and maintains its waitlists according to
the policy delineated in the Cooperative s membership selection plan. Respondents state that they
determine priority based on the following the HUD regulations and [Cooperative] documents.
Respondents state that the Cooperative should always accommodate qualifying family size at the time
application [is] filed, and must meet family needs according to agreement regulations. Family size
should always have priority over a single applicant. In case of the same family size applicants,
seniority will have priority.
Respondents state that Complainant filed an application for a three bedroom unit in 2006 and was
placed on the waitlist. Respondents explain that the Building has a limited number of three bedroom
units so it is not unusual that applicants would remain on the waitlist for an extended period.
Respondents continually audit the waitlist to ensure that all applicants are properly qualified for and
still desire a three bedroom unit. Respondents state that on November 14, 2014, in response to an
audit, Complainant confirmed that she still desired a three bedroom unit and had a family size of four
people. Respondents state that there was no indication that the request for a larger unit was as a
reasonable accommodation for Complainant s son and husband s disability

Describe Mariam s Microsystem Paper
1) Define the Macrosystem according to Urie Bronfenbrenner s ecological systems theory. According
to the Bronfenbrenner theory macrosystem would be defined as the society and subculture in which an
individual belongs. Macrosystem focuses on the individual s belief system, lifestyle, patterns of social
interaction and life changes. (Berns, 2013, p. 22). a. Describe the macrosystem in Montgomery
Alabama in 1955.
In my opinion, the macrosystem in 1955 in Montgomery Alabama would be considered a high context
macrosystem. When looking at how their society functioned, their culture emphasized tradition,
cooperation and group identity. The society at the time operated on a belief system that segregated
blacks and whites and believed that colored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her microsystem also consisted of her peers, such as her friend she worked with named Claudia and
also the church community that she met with often. I think the Thompson family would also be
considered a part of her microsystem. Odessa is around Miriam and Mary Catherine for long periods
of time during the day and has been working with the family for 9 years, showing that she has
certainly formed relationships with the members of their family.
b. Describe Mariam s microsystem.
Mariam s microsystem consists of her family, which includes her husband Norman, her daughters
Mary Catherine and Sarah. Odessa would be considered part of her microsystem as well and I believe
she would fall into the peer category. Mariam is also very active in her community and has many peers
that she socializes with and groups that she participates in, such as Jr. League, and club luncheons.
The media also plays a role in her microsystem through the television and more specifically the news
broadcast they would watch.

College Is The Time Of Your Life
Haakon Lovestad Dr. Van Bergen Rylander 24 Nov. 2104 Every once in a while, one comes across the
saying college is the time of your life , true enough, every person who has had the opportunity to
attend college, regularly reminisces about the time they had. In all fairness, the time in college is
indeed memorable. The reason as to why even Hollywood regularly releases movies with a theme and
setting of college. What these movies inevitably end up doing is glamorizing the all things to do with
college other than actually studying. In fact, in most instances, these movies glamorize parties, casual
sex, drinking binges and use of drugs. To the high school teenager with raving hormones, this is a
place to look forward to, which is if it ends up motivating them to the quests of higher grades.
Nevertheless, parents and other stakeholders more so in the department of health are regularly
wondering what exactly the place of sex in college is. (Bruce and Stewart) It is worth it to analyze the
whole issue of sex with an open mind. The reason for this is that external influences cloud the
perception of most regarding the topic of sex in relation to college. Society encourages modesty in
matters relating to sex, ironically, the media is awash with sex if not explicitly, it is implicit. However,
the common denominator to all this is the ever willingness of college girls to engage in sexual activity
in a rather casual and care free manner. Therefore, it is within prudence to assume

Globalization And Corporate Expansion Of American Companies
The globalization and corporate expansion of American companies has promoted inequality in the
United States and the world, largely through means defined to be inhumane. Corporate America has
embraced a hands free method of globalization. By both outsourcing labor and targeting more
consumer groups, especially those yearning for the American Dream, corporate America has
successfully increased profits. Almost everyone on earth is feeling the negative effects of corporate
America s actions. By outsourcing labor, prohibiting unions, disadvantaging women, and driving
wages down, globalization and corporate expansion advocates for inequality in both the United States
and the rest of the world. By moving labor to places outside of the United States, American companies
are able to secure cheap labor. This cheap labor negatively affects the lives of Americans and
foreigners. Some places even paying daily wages below the cost of a loaf of bread. Not only are the
companies driving up their profits, they are globalizing their brand at almost no cost to them and a
massive cost to everyone else. Anywhere litter flows with the brand of an American company, is free
advertising to them. The crushed Coca Cola can or the half rotted McDonald s bag, all are examples of
a free ad. According to John A. Powell and S.P. Udayakumar, The style of globalism pushed by the
United States has favored the free movement and protection of capital, while being at best indifferent
and at worst hostile to

The Revolt Of The Cockroach People
Mexican Americans in Texas have a long and detailed history spanning from the arrival of Cortez all
the way to the present day. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans
have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano
identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to
oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power over
all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican Americans,
they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican or Spanish
heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta s novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach People, he dives
into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than life character is on
the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the group. It was particularly
rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize politically and socially in order
to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that gave rise to the Chicano
Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the traditional roles gave Chicano
men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to conquer the past oppressions from
whites. Traditional roles for men in Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican cultures dictate the men as the

Analysis Of The Vendetta By Guy De Maupassure
Whether to take revenge on someone is a choice many people will have to make at some point in life.
Some would say that while it might feel good to get back at a person who has wronged us, it is not
usually the right choice for an individual to make. Other people disagree and feel that getting justice
by any means is more important. Guy de Maupassant deals with this issue in his short story The
Vendetta, and the tone he develops throughout the text helps readers to see this central idea. The story
reveals that revenge requires time, effort and determination.

Since when things get destroyed often negativity occurs. Lastly one last phrase in the first page that
indicates a dangerous tone is when the ocean is being described. Maupassant wrote, terrible channel to
describe the ocean. The word terrible has a negative connotation that allows the reader to feel uneasy
that people live near that area. The environment being described gives off a dangerous vibe. With
doing so the Maupassant is able to tell the reader that future is less likely going to get any better. The
setting and the tone here is sending signals that bad things will happen and this is what will lead to
reader to soon figure out the unfortunate events that will occur. While in the second part of the story
the mother grieves over her dead son who has just been stabbed and killed by a man that was carrying
a knife. She calls it a death he did not deserve. Her grieve and diction creates the hopeless tone that s
understood by the reader in this part of the story. For example a phrase to display this tone is my little
one. The phrase creates a negative connotation, this connotation creates the hopeless tone. The reader
understands that the mom is talking to her son who has long been dead. Using such phrase allows the
reader to began having sympathy for the mother. Another phrase that shows grieve and hopelessness is

Caste System The ideal way of life is referred to as the duties of one s class and station . In the phrase
the word class is changed to CASTE. The ancient texts tell of four great classes, or castes: the
Brahmins, or priests; the
Ksatriyas, or warriors and rulers; the Vaisayas, or merchants and farmers; and the Sudras, or peasants
and laborers. A fifth class, Panchamas, or untouchables, are people whose jobs make them touch

Pride And Prejudice Gender Expectations
The novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen depicts a social structure in which there are clear gender
expectations. These gender expectations control and restrict the lives of both genders, most notably
women. In. Austen s world, women have few opportunities to support themselves, and have high
expectations attributed to them. Men were held to similar standards. Upper and middle class men were
expected to add to their families wealth, be charming, and eventually marry. Deviation from these
spoken and unspoken rules, such as Lydia and Wickham s elopement, would result in becoming a
social pariah. In Pride and Prejudice , the characters of Elizabeth Bennet, her sister Lydia, and Mr.
Darcy challenge the aforementioned gender roles put in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Elizabeth s active nature and her refusal to be passive, You give your opinion very
decidedly for a woman of your age (Austen 159), overshadow the traditional qualities she possesses.
Her personality makes her very disagreeable to Lady Catherine and Mr. Bingley s sisters. When Jane
falls ill, Elizabeth walks miles through the mud to visit Netherfield. Upon arriving, Elizabeth shocks
the Bingley sisters, I shall never forget her appearance this morning. She looked almost wild. (Austen
35). Lady Catherine also plays a role in contrasting Elizabeth with more traditional women of the
time. The confrontation between the two at Longbourn shows Elizabeth s willingness to stand up for
herself against people of higher social standing, `I have said no such thing. I am only resolved to act in
that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to
any person so wholly unconnected with me. (Austen 332). Austen s use of a limited social structure
highlights the clear message about the expectations of women in Regency England and Elizabeth s

Irish Literature And Rebellion Essay
Irish Literature and Rebellion
In the heart of every Irishman hides a poet, burning with nationalistic passion for his beloved Emerald
Isle. It is this same passion, which for centuries, Great Britain has attempted to snuff out of the
Catholics of Ireland with tyrannical policies and the hegemony of the Protestant religion. Catholics
were treated like second class citizens in their native home. Centuries of oppression churned in the
hearts of the Irish and came to a boil in the writings and literature of the sons and daughters of Ireland.
The Literary Renaissance of Ireland produced some of the greatest writers the world has seen. John O

(The Man and the Echo, line 15 16). Yeats considers himself responsible for the death of his friends

The rising that Yeats is talking about is the Easter Rising of 1916. On April 24, 1916, a group of
Irishmen that called themselves the Irish Republican Brotherhood led by Padraic Pearse and James
Connolly s Ctizen Army, posted the Declaration of the Republic on the door of the General Post Office
in Dublin and declared Ireland a free country. [I have also attached a copy of the Declaration of the
Republic for reference.] Unfortunately, although anticipated by the nationalist s leadership, the British

How Kava Is An Herb Of The Western Pacific Islands
Kava is an herb found in the western pacific islands. Kava is a sacred plant that had been used in
multiple varieties of ways, particularly ceremonially and medicinally, in the western pacific for
centuries. Kava is used to relieve anxiety, restlessness, sleeplessness, and stress related symptoms such
as muscle tension or spasm. Kava may also relieve pain . Kava comes in many forms, the traditional
one being tea, but also as a dietary supplement in powder and tincture (extract in alcohol) forms .

The most serious concern about kava is the effect kava has on those who take it and then try to operate

association between kava use and the risk of four wheeled motor vehicle crashes in Fiji . This study
was a, population based case control study. Data was collected by structured interviewer administered
questionnaires of self reported participant data on demographic characteristics and a range of risk
factors including kava use and potential confounders . This study found that, overall, 23% and 4% of
drivers of case and control vehicles, respectively, reported consuming kava in the 12 hours prior to the
crash or road survey. After controlling for assessed confounders, driving following kava use was
associated with a four fold increase in the odds of crash involvement (Odds ratio: 4.70; 95% CI: 1.90
11.63). The related population attributable risk was 18.37% (95% CI: 13.77 22.72). Acknowledging
limited statistical power, we did not find a significant interaction in this association with concurrent
alcohol use . This study concluded that, in a setting where recreational kava consumption is common,
driving following the use of kava was associated with a significant excess of serious injury involved
road crashes. The precautionary principle would suggest road safety strategies should explicitly

Advantages of nuclear power;
Low costs. The initial construction costs of nuclear power plants are large. When the power plants first
have been built, we are left with the costs to enrich and process the nuclear fuel, control and get rid of
nuclear waste, as well as the maintenance of the plant. The reason this is under advantages is that
nuclear energy is cost competitive. Generating electricity in nuclear reactors is cheaper than electricity
generating from oil, gas and coal. Nuclear power plants provide a stable base load of energy. This can
work synergistic with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The electricity production
from the plants can be lowered when good wind and solar resources are available and cranked up
when the demand is high.
Low pollution. It is in most cases more beneficial, in terms of the climate crisis, to replace other
energy harnessing methods we use today with nuclear power. The environmental effects of nuclear
power are relatively light compared to those. However, nuclear waste is potential harmful for both
humans and the environment.

The Desert Observation
The observation took place on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. I conducted my observation at Little
School of the Desert, located in Twentynine Palms, CA. At this location I observed a 4 yr. old boy
named Nicholas. Nicholas is 4 yrs. old. During the observation, the child did not speak or interacted
with any other child in the class. Nicholas did not want to use the bathroom if there was another child
or a teacher close by. He did speak to his teacher at times, but most of the times, he would play in the
block area alone. Also, Nicholas moves independently, and does not require any assistive technology
or adaptive equipment. I did not observe him outdoors, but I was able to see that he walk and move

have liked to know if Nicholas has been diagnosed with any disabilities. One, because I do hope he is
getting the early intervention he needs and deserves; two, because if he does not have any disability, I
would have like to know strategies to meet his needs. It was clear that something was odd from the
way he was behaving, especially with his peers. In the contrary, I also feel that it shouldn t matter to
me what type of disability he has, I should see him as an individual, and not as his disability. As a
teacher, I should be able to meet his particular needs, adapt the curriculum to challenge him, as well as
meet his needs, while using his strengths as opportunities. Since I conducted this observation, I can t
stop re playing it in my head, on how would I have handled the different scenarios I observed that day.
Every observation is a new lesson learned, I get strategies on what I observed worked between the
teacher and child, and what things to avoid. I really do enjoy doing observations; it definitely has an
influence in my teaching, in my strategies, and in a personal level as well. I feel I get to experience the
scenario behind a glass window. I can see the troubles, hear the tears and screams, sometimes feel the
toys as they are flying across the room, however, since I am not responsible for the class, I am only
there to observe, I am more calm, I am able to see how the teacher reacts, and I get time to analyze
and process how I would possible handle the scenario, all without feeling the stress to handle it

Comparison Of Renaissance Art And Nativity With Adoration...
The Renaissance was a period of cultural innovation and rebirth that began in southern Europe and
slowly spread its influence to the north. Much like today, Renaissance artists were inspired by history
and other artists of their time. This is evident with two paintings tthat both feature Madonna and Jesus
as the main subjects, however presented with many differences. It is important to note that artists in
Italy were heavily inspired by the civilizations before them, such as the art of classical Greece.
Meanwhile, artists in the North were more inspired by Medieval art. Continuing forward, Nativity
with Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1500) will be the first artwork examined before moving to the
Italian art.
Nativity with Adoration of the Shepherds was created by the Circle of Master of the Brunswick
Diptych, as referred to by the Denver Art Museum, and is of a modest size at only 23 by 33 . The
viewer is immediately drawn to the center panel where Mary is lingering over the newly born Jesus.
The representation of the very small Jesus depicts him as frail, yet the holy halo, symbolizing the
divine, surrounds his entire body as he lays on a fabric that is a part of Mary s clothing while Jesus is
resting on the ground. A third figure to the right of Mary also is overlooking Jesus, however his body
language is difficult to decipher due to the dull emotion the man is evoking. Contextually, one can
assume he is Joseph, and in awe of the birth of Jesus. What is strikingly

Analysis Of The Book Honky By Dalton Conley
Author and sociologist, Dalton Conley, is a Caucasian boy who grows up in a predominantly African
American and Latino neighborhood in the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the 1970 s and 80 s.
In his book, Honky, he tells us a unique view through a young boy s eyes uncovering the way in which
individuals are perceived in social reality, and how some groups of people are classified. He also
speaks about how some groups get better opportunities and privileges then others. This book is a very
powerful autobiography, according to his book, written by, not your typical middle class white male.
(prologue, p. xiii) He goes on to say that he is middle class, even though his parents didn t have any
money and that he is a white boy, even though he grew up in an inner city housing project where
mostly everyone was Black or Hispanic. Dalton speaks about his experience as a white boy exploring
his definition of race and class and saying that, race and class are nothing more than a set of stories we
tell ourselves to get through the world, to organize our reality. (prologue, p. xiv) He describes his
childhood as a social science experiment, Find out what being middle class really means by raising a
kid from a so called good family in a so called bad neighborhood. (prologue, p. xiii) In the first few
chapters, Dalton s thought of race was something that he was not aware of in his early years. He writes
about being the age of three and the new sister he chose to kidnap, which

The Treaty Of South Africa Kyoto Protocol Under The United...
2.0. Introduction The Republic of South Africa signed the Kyoto Protocol under the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 31 July, 2002 as a non annex I party.
Therefore, South Africa, like all other developing countries has not been allocated specific targets to
commit to under the protocol. At the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) negotiations that took place
in Copenhagen in 2009 (UNFCC, 2009), South Africa took the responsibility to carry out mitigation
actions to reduce their emissions 34% by the year 2020, and 42% by the year 2025, below the business
as usual trajectory (Voster, Winkler and Meagan, 2011 p.243). However, this pledge is subject to the
provision and assistance of adequate, capacity building, financial and technological support from other
developed countries. These targets were officially submitted to the Copenhagen Accord on 29 January,
2010. Furthermore, South Africa is said to be a participant of the World Bank s Partnership for Market
Readiness (PMR). This is a capacity building program supporting the development of market based
policies. South Africa s exposure to the carbon market has mainly been through the Clean

The Innate Immune Systems And The Acquired Or Adaptive...
The immune system can broadly be divided into two categories: the innate immune system and the
acquired or adaptive immune system. The innate system acts like the first line of defense, it works by
recognizing a broad range of pathogens on the basis of their patterns and certain molecules that are
different from those found in the organism e.g. the human innate immune system will recognize
peptidoglycans that are found in bacteria but not humans. The innate system consists of physical
barriers like the skin and mucosal membrane and other cells like natural killers and cytokines. It is
thought, as of now, that the innate immune system has no memory. The acquired or adaptive immune
system on the other hand is much more specific. (Warrington, Watson, Kim, Antonett, 2011) Rick M
Maizels et al state that the reason natural selection has favored so much variation in the immune
response is because in order to survive, the organism must illicit a strong response against a large
number of invading pathogens. Had this response not been a highly evolved one, our immune system
would not have been able to fend of many complex pathogens which can themselves evolve rapidly to
encounter the hosts immune system. (Maizels Nussey, 2013)
Initially, only the innate immune system existed, but as organisms evolved another set of immune cells
starting to develop. This can be seen from the immune system of jawless fish like lamprey. These
organisms don t essentially have an adaptive immune

b. Transition to Second Main Point: Now that you are financially and emotionally prepared, it s time
to evaluate the housing market. Is it a buyers or a sellers market. What are interest rates doing? What
mortgage products are available to you now, and could those options change?
B. Main Point # 2: It is very important to be aware of the housing market conditions, what is going on
in the market in regards to interest rates and what mortgage products are available to you. All of these
factors are significant in deciding your time frame for purchasing.
a. Support: This is not data that you will have to go out and collect. They are merely questions you
should ask to determine the urgency of your purchase. Any qualified professional should be able to
answer these questions for you and educate you on how they affect you.
First question, what type of real estate market are we in? Is it a buyers or a sellers market. This may
very well determine if now is the right time for you to buy. Take 2004 as an example. At that point in
time it was a very strong sellers market, which meant that sellers had more control over the transaction
and could demand more from prospective buyers. Almost every seller was receiving multiple if not 10
or more contracts on their property. This turned every purchase into a bidding war between potential
buyers,

George Gascoigne
In 1573, George Gascoigne published For That He Looked Not upon Her, a poem in which his careful
and methodical approach to the sonnet form is evident. Two years later, he published Certayne Notes
of Instruction on Making of Verse, which only further served to cement his reputation as meticulous
and deliberate with his choice of language and form every choice Gascoigne makes is made with a
purpose in mind. This is especially evident in For That He Looked Not upon Her, wherein Gascoigne
utilizes both the intentionally chosen sonnet form and vivid imagery to develop his criticism of the
classic sonnet in which the beloved s refusal of the author only serves to make him more determined
to pursue her. The sonnet form is typically one chosen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Gascoigne s metaphor, a mouse that had escaped a trap is unlikely to return, even if given
motivation to return to the trap and try for the food again (5 8). The idea of an tiny, innocent animal
representative of sonneteers caught in a trap which represents their beloved s chronic rejection, is
designed to engender feelings of sadness and pity in readers. Likewise, in Gascoigne s second
metaphor, it is improbable that a fly that has been burned by a flame would approach any flame
thereafter (9 12), once again inspiring compassion in the reader for the sonneteers emotional pain. In
more modern times, flies are seen as less unclean and disgusting creatures than they were in the past,
but in Gascoigne s day, that would not have been the case. The same holds true for mice in Gascoigne
s day, mice were seen as pests to be rid of at all costs. No one would have sympathized with a mouse.
So Gascoigne s argument changes contextually; instead of creatures to be sympathized with, the
mouse and fly and by extension the sonneteers are simply nuisances to be rid

Comparing Shakespeare s Othello with Conrad s Heart of Darkness
It is often that when we read great works of literature we come across similar themes. Authors use
powerful ideas that they believe will move their readers and relate to them so they become engaged in
the words written. William Shakespeare and Joseph Conrad were amazing writers of their times and
even though their works were written almost 300 years apart, both, Othello and Heart of Darkness,
have coinciding themes.
The major theme that both Shakespeare and Conrad tackled was racism and the concept of whites
versus blacks. The play Othello tells the story of a black general by the name of Othello and the
betrayal, lies, and deception that comes about when marrying a ... Show more content on

He uses derogatory and offensive remarks that devalue people of color and make them out to be
savages. Chinua Achebe, a well known writer, talked about Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness,
entitled An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad s Heart of Darkness. Throughout his essay, Achebe
notes how Conrad set Africa up as a foil to Europe, (Achebe) while he also projects the image of
Africa as the other world . Africa is said to be a prehistoric world. Conrad described this land as non
advanced and inferior to the western countries.
Another theme that was portrayed by both Othello and Heart of Darkness was that of good versus evil.
What was ironic about this theme was that it was somewhat opposite and strange for the time period
they were both written in. In both works it seemed as if blacks were seen as the good and innocent
while the whites were seen on the evil side. African heritage is usually portrayed in a negative light
and it was not the case in these pieces. Othello was looked as somewhat of a black hero and Iago was
considered the white nemesis. Iago s deceitful ways brings light to Othello s true character, a great
general and man. Conrad shows the Africans as innocent victims to the white man s chaos. The white
men, even though they are shown more powerful, are the ones seen in the dark.
Racism and good versus evil come down to the idea of the white man versus the black man. These
ideas have been in and out of

Light Pollution
Effects of Light Pollution on Ecosystems
Intro
Over time, human populations have been exponentially increasing. This growth has led to a major
increase in demand for resources and space. To achieve their goals, humans have caused major
changes in the surrounding ecosystems in many ways. First, they have cleared many areas thriving
with organisms to build roads and cities destroying different ecosystems. Second, they have
overharvested many species for food and resources causing many species to go extinct. Lastly, they
have polluted natural habitats in numerous ways declining species biodiversity. Many people are
familiar with pollution such as air pollution, trash pollution, and chemical pollution. However, a less
apparent type of pollution that is equally important is the pollution of artificial lighting.
Over the past hundred plus years artificial lighting has increased in use dramatically. From 1992 to
2013 there has been an increase in light intensity on coastal zones of about 42% (Brei et al. 2016).
This increasing use of light has had major impacts on surrounding species on land and in water. Many
organisms are nocturnal or depend on light cues to go on through normal daily activities such as
foraging, migration, and reproduction. This disruption in schedule has seen to have major impacts on
varied species. La Sorte et al. (2017) shows how light pollution affects nocturnal migrating birds.
These birds seemed to be attracted to highly lit urban areas disrupting natural behaviors like
migration. Perkin et al. (2014) displays how artificial lighting can affect insects and their ability to
properly disperse throughout areas. Although light pollution has shown to affect many diverse types of
organisms on land, marine organisms have also been affected. Due to the increase in artificial light
pollution, the marine environment can have disruptions which lead to trophic cascades, changes in
behaviors, and changes in interactions among and between marine species resulting in a loss of
biodiversity. If humans keep on the same track they have been, then biodiversity will be lost, so they
must think of solutions to combat and reduce the effects artificial light pollution has on biodiversity.

The Mixed Economic System In The United States
All countries around the world have some form of economic system that is there to provide a basis on
which their economies can grow and prosper. Current economic systems are based on growth to
remain stable to be successful. Sustainable economies are when the output is steady over the long term
but may change in the short term an economic system that does not promote growth is going to
collapse. In economics capitalism and socialism influence views on how the economy should be
managed. Capitalist argue that the economy should encourage innovation and freedom to provide
people with the highest standard of living possible, and socialist argue that the economy should
provide a degree of equality so the pie is evenly split and everything is fair. ... Show more content on

Economic policies are there to ensure that the economy will remain stable in the future and also ensure
that everything is being run fair and everyone is getting equal opportunity. Mixed economies can enact
policies that benefit both the consumer and business. In a mixed economy the government and market
work together to determine the best policies for future long term stability and growth. During a
recession in a mixed economy the government will put more money and resources into the public
sector, such as repairing roads, building schools and hospitals and create more jobs. The government
will also lower taxes so consumers have more money to spend. (http://econsguide.blogspot.ca/, 2009).
Private sectors main interest is to make a profit and not the state of the economy such as inflation and
unemployment is not their concern although they contribute to it. (http://econsguide.blogspot.ca/,
2009). The government acts as a referee carefully enacting policies that benefit the greater good and
improve the economic stability. In times of slow growth and recession the government can take
control and regulate the economy to prevent further slow growth and bring the economy back to a
stable state. At the same time corporations are free to manage their own business provided they agree
to the rules and laws set by the government. A mixed economy has more

Lexy s Paranoia And Mr. Jones
Mr. Jones was expected to be a demon by the Inquisitors. This is what they anticipated while they
researched Lexy. Alas, they could not classify what Mr. Jones actually was and Lexy was almost
equally as complex to classify, as his condition exhibited the extreme duality of both an empath and a
channeling medium. He was easily inhabited by inter dimensional beings, and he could strongly feel
their vibrations flowing through the environment simultaneously. Without the knowledge or ability to
control this gift, this poor guy was a doorknob. Every otherworldy spirit got a turn with him until Mr.

Why Did Reagan Demand Gorbachev To Tear Down The Berlin Wall
In 1987, Reagan delivered a passionate speech in which he challenged Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of

Why did Reagan demand Gorbachev to tear down the Wall? Reagan wanted to end the soviets versus
the west. He wanted to end the cold war. Reagan saw that the west has prospered and flourished after
the war while the east was struggling to feed its own people. Tearing down the Berlin wall would be
the symbol of the end of the cold war. It would finally reunite Berlin.

Questions On Non Financial Firms
1. Introduction
The 2007 2008 crisis started off in August 2007 as a subprime mortgage crisis primarily concentrated
in the United States but quickly metamorphosized into a global financial crisis where financial
institutions teeter on the edge of bankruptcy in many countries in addition to the United States. A
global economic crisis ensues in which nonfinancial firms around the world appear to spiral
downward as well. A key potential contributor to the plight of the non financial firms is the financial
crisis itself, in the form of a negative shock to the supply of external finance needed by non financial
firms. However, as the two quotes by some leading policymakers and scholars at the beginning of the
paper indicate, the idea that non financial firms suffer from a strongly negative supply of finance
shock is not universally shared. In addition, if non financial firms do not do well, there can certainly
be other causes, such as a contraction of demand for their products.
This paper has three objectives. First, it aims to develop a simple framework that can capture and
quantify the relative importance of the finance shock to the economic health of non financial firms.
Second, in a cross country context, it aims to investigate whether the responsiveness of the real
economy to a given finance shock varies by country features that the literature suggests that could
matter, such as the type of a financial system, the nature of a monetary and exchange rate regime, or
the extent

Passing and Human Relationships
Passing and Human Relationships
The Harlem Renaissance was a turning point for many African Americans. A vast amount of literature
was created specifically for this group during this era. For the first time, African Americans were
being told that it was okay to be proud of who they were. This new consciousness and self awareness
was prominent in many works of literature, but several writers began exploring the darker side of this
movement with literature that concentrated on the negative aspects of race relations in America. Nella
Larsen s novel Passing concentrates on this theme with the story of Clare, a tragic mulatto who passes
as a white person. Not only is Passing representative of the plight of the tragic mulatto, it ... Show

The fact that she has to deny her identity in order to feel safe eventually leads to her realization that
her life has become a lie. Clare tells Irene that she nearly died of terror the whole nine months before
Margery (her daughter) was born for fear that she might be dark (Larsen 168). Her husband
nicknamed her Nig, because she gets darker each day.
Although Clare s desire to return to the African American community outwardly seemed merely
whimsical, inwardly, Irene begins to see something groping, and hopeless, and yet so absolutely
determined inside this woman (Larsen 200). Clare will stop at nothing to leave the life she once
desired in order to re enter the African American community. Clare begins to realize that her desire to
return to her African American heritage overshadows any disaster it may cause. In order to get the
things she wants badly enough, she d do anything, hurt anybody, throw anything away (Larsen 210).
In reality, Clare s ultimate loss of soul is realized in the fact that she is willing to forsake her family,
including her daughter, in order to reclaim her racial identity. This, not her eventual death, becomes
Clare s ultimate tragedy. She loses something of her own soul living in the world of white men. Clare
feels that society forces her to abandon her family simply because part of her is African American. The

Social Media And Traditional Media
Traditional media has failed to live up to its fourth estate role. This has lead us to the question, can the
more modern, social media, make up for the lack of success that traditional media has had in fulfilling
this watchdog role for the people? Kemp s rules of CIDRA1 apply to social media as they do with
traditional media. Thus, we must determine what, if any, obstacles are present in preventing social
media from completing this role. More specifically, do the five filters that Chomsky highlights apply
to social media as they do to traditional media? Or does the fundamental structure of social media
allow for it to accomplish a fifth estate role? I argue that social media is more effective at playing a
watchdog role than traditional media. Social media is built on a platform that has the interest of
working for the people in terms of freedom of distributing ideas and checking elite power in liberal
democracies. Furthermore, ...traditional media formats are no longer the only politically relevant
forms of media (Metzgar, Maruggi, 2009, p. 149). The reason that social media can have higher
success in acting as a watchdog role stems from one central theme: when it comes to social media, less
of Chomsky s filters lie between the person wanting to distribute an idea and the ability to have this
idea delivered to the public.
We must understand the foundation of social media, and determine if it can meet the standards brought
by Kemp. This, along with determining if Chomsky s

Analysis Of The Wild West
Western Identity The Wild West, in American history, is often thought of as being an ideology filled
with adventure and happy endings. This picture of the Wild West is largely in place due to the
romanticizing of the West by Hollywood. Movies portraying the West are filled with stereotypes,
whether they are purposeful or not, that do not accurately show what defines the Western persona.
Stereotypical situations such as Indians being depicted as savages and noble sheriffs saving the day
leave out certain facts that defined the Wild West. Many Indians were betrayed and slaughtered by
American citizens in the Wild West, as shown throughout Dee Brown s novel, Bury My Heart at

To many miners, days seemed like years and months like decades. In addition to hardship in mining,
many Americans on the frontier experienced challenges in farming. At first it was difficult for
Americans to grow crops in the West, but eventually technology of agriculture was able to give
Americans the ability to grow crops more efficiently. Wild West was full of trials, and living in it was
certainly not an easy task. It is impossible to write about hardship in the Wild West without talking
about the hardship that Native Americans faced. The war on Indians by the United States government
focused on relocating all Native Americans to reservations so that Americans could settle in more
lands. For this reason, many Native Americans undoubtedly fought back against the United States
government. This led to violence and the slaughtering of Indians for which the Wild West is known.
One famous event concerning the Indian Wars was the Wounded Knee Massacre. Dee Brown
described this event in her novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, saying that the United States 7th
Cavalry Regiment opened up on them, firing almost a shell a second, raking the Indian camp,
shredding the teepees with flying shrapnel, killing men, women, and children. According to Brown,
[o]ne estimate placed the final total of dead at very nearly three hundred of the original 350 men,
women, and children.

Premise for Critical Literacy
Critical Literacy has many different forms, and can be very different depending on which classroom it

Critical Literacy is forming an individual opinion on a topic that isn t only superficial, but also in
depth and meaningful. Being critically literate isn t about attaining literacy for the purpose of reading

Brazilian educator. He was born September 19, 1921 and died May 2, 1997. Freire was a leading
advocate for critical pedagogy, and contributed to the philosophy of education from a more classical
approach such as Plato and modern Marxist. Freire believed in a banking method which is compared
to students. He viewed students as empty bank accounts waiting to be filled by the teacher. According
to Freire, by filling students with this new knowledge it transforms them into receiving objects (Paulo

something done for students or to them for their own good (Freire, 1989, 34). Freire s pedagogy

Musical Theatre As A Theatrical Performance
Musical Theatre is a theatrical performance when the story is told through dialogue, song, and dance.
Back then, people didn t Snap Chat, Face Time or watch TV for entertainment; they would go to the
Theatre for a night out, first date, etc. To give a more definitive description of how musicals evolved,
affected, and influenced throughout history, a time line of major musicals that defined certain stages of
Musical Theatre will probably help people understand what makes it so unique.
Now a quick history lesson, Musical Theatre technically was created in 5th Century BCE Ancient
Greece, when staged comedies and tragedies would be told with a bit music and dance...but Musicals
didn t fully emerge into the world until the early 20th Century when the art form went to London,
England, and then to America, which formed the famous theatre district, Broadway. Now that the
basics are covered of where Musical Theatre came from, this paper is more about how Broadway
Musicals evolved into what they are in present day, how people have reacted to such performances,
and how musical theatre has impacted not only America, but also the world.
The first era of Musical Theatre actually started in the 1920 s 1930 s during the Great Depression.
This was a the first time there were musicals other than the fun, young, and enjoyable shows, the first

Examples Of Evil In Beowulf
Hero vs Evil
The idea of good and evil presented in Beowulf is hard to capture, by the things he does. He is an idea
of a not humble hero. Everyone wants to be hero of the story and being the center of attention. Who
doesn t want to feel respected or looked up too? Compared to other heroes he wasn t chosen for the
job, he does it to get something out of it.
He doesn t have the quality of being modest, putting the needs of another person before your own. In
the story he makes the people think he does, but in reality he just likes how society gives him attention
and consideration for it. He always likes drawing attention to himself, and he believes that he is
always right. When he heard that he had the chance to be the hero in the story, he immediately jumped
in a boat and moved. He just wanted to kill Grendel without the situation being his business. As ...

They have some good and some bad. The generations changes, how we look at things, difference of
opinions between one generation and another regarding views, politics, or values. When you think
about hero s generation now, you think about catwoman, superwoman or bad man and they didn t
decide to be there. They were chosen to be there. They are an example of modest heroes. When they
fight or protected people, they didn t expect nothing back. Compared to old hero generation like
Beowulf it s different. Beowulf is someone arrogant and way to confident about himself. He is not a
humble hero. He is an outsider and comes in and knows that the king has problems with Grendel. He
risk it all and says I going to kill him I going to be the hero to the king. He doesn t have a thought in
his mind that he is going to lose to him. He just comes and he takes it, without anyone telling him.
That s the part of the beliefs of that time. The people around him aren t suppose to dislike him; they
value that, because that s the culture. That s how they value

Though it shall be established in this write up that a link always exists between all the three types of
codes mentioned above for a text to be described as a system, it is paramount to view with a
magnifying glass on the inherent elements and value of the poem as the Structuralist suggested. In
Mending Wall, the intratextual code is recognisable in the aesthetic use of the word play
(paronomasia) in Where they have left no one stone on a stone and What I was walling in or walling
out . Principles of repetition are also used in Something there is that doesn t love a wall and Good
fences make good neighbours . One aspect of intratextual code is its advocation for recognition of
visible concrete features of a text. The use of the lyrical voice I and neighbour to draw closer to and
alienate the other from the reader strikes one as a code that demands recoding and overcoding.
Paradigmatic links in wall, hill, line and fences; loaves, balls, boulders and stone; hunters elves;
rabbits and yelping dogs call upon the reader to recode and overcode these signs to come with the real
meanings of the poem. However, the reader also has to be acquainted with the literally code employed
by the speaker to appreciate the inherent value of the poem, for example, the choice of diction,
semantic variations and form, and secondary modelling system

The Touchstone Of Life By Loewenstein
In The Touchstone of Life , Loewenstein talked about the concept of entropy from the viewpoint of
information theory. In the thermodynamic viewpoint, the concept of entropy is the transformation of
heat to work. However, in general chemistry the viewpoint of entropy is the measure of disorder.
There are some different and similar between 3 viewpoints. The common in 3 viewpoints are that they
were trying to explain the second the law of thermodynamics. Also, Boltzaman stated that entropy is
the measure of the disordered; it is just like information is a measure of order when we compare that
to information theory.
Besides the similarity, the differences between these 3 viewpoints are that the information theory is
defined entropy in the context of probability model to establish a measure for the amount of
information connect with the message. From Shannon s viewpoint, information becomes
mathematically defines quantity that represents the degree of choice applied in forming a particular
symbol or message sequence out of a number of possible ones, and entropy becomes a measure of the
rate of transfer of the information in the message.
The thermodynamic viewpoint is based on described the system with the macroscopically view, and
what we can measure by thermodynamic variables: temperature, pressure, volume, and number of
particles by observe how temperature and heat and its relation to the observed energy and work
measured for the system. When a closed system holds an

Hiroshima Bombing Shouldn T Have Been Avoided
Hiroshima is one of the saddest and terrifying attack in human history. Some people say we shouldn t
have dropped the second bomb and even the first one, while others claim we did what we had to do.
They shouldn t have dropped the second bomb, but I am for dropping the first one. Afterall, it was
war, many good things came out of it, but at a high price. The bombs we dropped ended the war, it
triggered Japan to surrender. Which gave us peace, the fear of the bomb brought peace because know
one wanted to feel the wrath of the bomb. Supporters of the bombing believed that waiting for the
Japanese to surrender would have cost many civilian lives. Millions of laborers working in harsh
conditions under a forced mobilization were liberated when the

An Theoretical School District, School, And A Classroom
In this paper I am going to present an theoretical school district, school, and a classroom as examples
of
the ideal that our educational system should strive to achieve. The philosophy my schools will be
based
on is one of equality. Every single child will have an opportunity to receive the best possible
education.
However, we will never lower our standards for the sake of equality. Each child will be pushed to his
or
her personal best, not an average standard.
Before talking about what goes on inside the schools, I d like to mention the district itself. There will
be
no alternative school choices, bussing, or deliberate desegregation practices. Each school will be
remarkably similar to the others in the district so that every child may receive a similar education
regardless of the neighborhood they live in. When students are separated to different schools for any
reason (academic talent, wealth, interests, race, gender) they fail to interact with different types of
people that they will undoubtedly encounter in the real adult world. In addition, I feel that is very
important for children from the same neighborhood to attend the same school in order to increase a
sense of community. Finally, as the Case Study of Boulder Valley points out, school choice takes
valuable
resources away from teaching and places them in school competition (Howe 144).
Within a typical high school, there will be many different kinds of students. Likewise, there will be

According to the Bronfenbrenner theory macrosystem would be defined as the society and subculture in which an individual belongs. Macrosystem focuses on the individual s belief system, lifestyle, patterns of social interaction and life changes. (Berns, 2013, p. 22). a. Describe the macrosystem in Montgomery Alabama in 1955. In my opinion, the macrosystem in 1955 in Montgomery Alabama would be considered a high context macrosystem. • 4. College Is The Time Of Your Life Haakon Lovestad Dr. Van Bergen Rylander 24 Nov. 2104 Every once in a while, one comes across the saying college is the time of your life , true enough, every person who has had the opportunity to attend college, regularly reminisces about the time they had. In all fairness, the time in college is indeed memorable. The reason as to why even Hollywood regularly releases movies with a theme and setting of college. What these movies inevitably end up doing is glamorizing the all things to do with college other than actually studying. In fact, in most instances, these movies glamorize parties, casual sex, drinking binges and use of drugs. To the high school teenager with raving hormones, this is a place to look forward to, which is if it ends up motivating them to the quests of higher grades. Nevertheless, parents and other stakeholders more so in the department of health are regularly wondering what exactly the place of sex in college is. (Bruce and Stewart) It is worth it to analyze the whole issue of sex with an open mind. The reason for this is that external influences cloud the perception of most regarding the topic of sex in relation to college. Society encourages modesty in matters relating to sex, ironically, the media is awash with sex if not explicitly, it is implicit. However, the common denominator to all this is the ever willingness of college girls to engage in sexual activity in a rather casual and care free manner. Therefore, it is within prudence to assume ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Globalization And Corporate Expansion Of American Companies The globalization and corporate expansion of American companies has promoted inequality in the United States and the world, largely through means defined to be inhumane. Corporate America has embraced a hands free method of globalization. By both outsourcing labor and targeting more consumer groups, especially those yearning for the American Dream, corporate America has successfully increased profits. Almost everyone on earth is feeling the negative effects of corporate America s actions. By outsourcing labor, prohibiting unions, disadvantaging women, and driving wages down, globalization and corporate expansion advocates for inequality in both the United States and the rest of the world. By moving labor to places outside of the United States, American companies are able to secure cheap labor. This cheap labor negatively affects the lives of Americans and foreigners. Some places even paying daily wages below the cost of a loaf of bread. Not only are the companies driving up their profits, they are globalizing their brand at almost no cost to them and a massive cost to everyone else. Anywhere litter flows with the brand of an American company, is free advertising to them. The crushed Coca Cola can or the half rotted McDonald s bag, all are examples of a free ad. Udayakumar, The style of globalism pushed by the United States has favored the free movement and protection of capital, while being at best indifferent and at worst hostile to ... • 6. The Revolt Of The Cockroach People Mexican Americans in Texas have a long and detailed history spanning from the arrival of Cortez all the way to the present day. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power over all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican Americans, they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican or Spanish heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta s novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach People, he dives into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than life character is on the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the group. It was particularly rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize politically and socially in order to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that gave rise to the Chicano Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the traditional roles gave Chicano men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to conquer the past oppressions from whites. Traditional roles for men in Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican cultures dictate the men as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of The Vendetta By Guy De Maupassure Whether to take revenge on someone is a choice many people will have to make at some point in life. Some would say that while it might feel good to get back at a person who has wronged us, it is not usually the right choice for an individual to make. Other people disagree and feel that getting justice by any means is more important. Guy de Maupassant deals with this issue in his short story The Vendetta, and the tone he develops throughout the text helps readers to see this central idea. The story reveals that revenge requires time, effort and determination. The Renaissance was a period of cultural innovation and rebirth that began in southern Europe and slowly spread its influence to the north. Much like today, Renaissance artists were inspired by history and other artists of their time. It is important to note that artists in Italy were heavily inspired by the civilizations before them, such as the art of classical Greece. Meanwhile, artists in the North were more inspired by Medieval art. • 18. The Innate Immune Systems And The Acquired Or Adaptive... The immune system can broadly be divided into two categories: the innate immune system and the acquired or adaptive immune system. The innate system acts like the first line of defense, it works by recognizing a broad range of pathogens on the basis of their patterns and certain molecules that are different from those found in the organism e.g. the human innate immune system will recognize peptidoglycans that are found in bacteria but not humans. The innate system consists of physical barriers like the skin and mucosal membrane and other cells like natural killers and cytokines. It is thought, as of now, that the innate immune system has no memory. The acquired or adaptive immune system on the other hand is much more specific. (Warrington, Watson, Kim, Antonett, 2011) Rick M Maizels et al state that the reason natural selection has favored so much variation in the immune response is because in order to survive, the organism must illicit a strong response against a large number of invading pathogens. Had this response not been a highly evolved one, our immune system would not have been able to fend of many complex pathogens which can themselves evolve rapidly to encounter the hosts immune system. (Maizels Nussey, 2013) Initially, only the innate immune system existed, but as organisms evolved another set of immune cells starting to develop. Throughout his essay, Achebe notes how Conrad set Africa up as a foil to Europe, (Achebe) while he also projects the image of Africa as the other world . Africa is said to be a prehistoric world. Conrad described this land as non advanced and inferior to the western countries. Another theme that was portrayed by both Othello and Heart of Darkness was that of good versus evil. What was ironic about this theme was that it was somewhat opposite and strange for the time period they were both written in. In both works it seemed as if blacks were seen as the good and innocent while the whites were seen on the evil side. African heritage is usually portrayed in a negative light and it was not the case in these pieces. Othello was looked as somewhat of a black hero and Iago was considered the white nemesis. • 24. Light Pollution Effects of Light Pollution on Ecosystems Intro Over time, human populations have been exponentially increasing. This growth has led to a major increase in demand for resources and space. To achieve their goals, humans have caused major changes in the surrounding ecosystems in many ways. First, they have cleared many areas thriving with organisms to build roads and cities destroying different ecosystems. Second, they have overharvested many species for food and resources causing many species to go extinct. Lastly, they have polluted natural habitats in numerous ways declining species biodiversity. Many people are familiar with pollution such as air pollution, trash pollution, and chemical pollution. However, a less apparent type of pollution that is equally important is the pollution of artificial lighting. Over the past hundred plus years artificial lighting has increased in use dramatically. From 1992 to 2013 there has been an increase in light intensity on coastal zones of about 42% (Brei et al. 2016). This increasing use of light has had major impacts on surrounding species on land and in water. Many organisms are nocturnal or depend on light cues to go on through normal daily activities such as foraging, migration, and reproduction. This disruption in schedule has seen to have major impacts on varied species. La Sorte et al. (2017) shows how light pollution affects nocturnal migrating birds. These birds seemed to be attracted to highly lit urban areas disrupting natural behaviors like migration. Perkin et al. (2014) displays how artificial lighting can affect insects and their ability to properly disperse throughout areas. Although light pollution has shown to affect many diverse types of organisms on land, marine organisms have also been affected. Due to the increase in artificial light pollution, the marine environment can have disruptions which lead to trophic cascades, changes in behaviors, and changes in interactions among and between marine species resulting in a loss of biodiversity. If humans keep on the same track they have been, then biodiversity will be lost, so they must think of solutions to combat and reduce the effects artificial light pollution has on biodiversity. • 27. Why Did Reagan Demand Gorbachev To Tear Down The Berlin Wall In 1987, Reagan delivered a passionate speech in which he challenged Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the USSR, to tear down the Berlin Wall. Why did Reagan demand Gorbachev to tear down the Wall? Reagan wanted to end the soviets versus the west. He wanted to end the cold war. Reagan saw that the west has prospered and flourished after the war while the east was struggling to feed its own people. Tearing down the Berlin wall would be the symbol of the end of the cold war. It would finally reunite Berlin. What did the Berlin Wall represent? The wall represent the division of the world. On the west you had the capitalist and on the east you had the communist. • 28. Questions On Non Financial Firms 1. Introduction The 2007 2008 crisis started off in August 2007 as a subprime mortgage crisis primarily concentrated in the United States but quickly metamorphosized into a global financial crisis where financial institutions teeter on the edge of bankruptcy in many countries in addition to the United States. A global economic crisis ensues in which nonfinancial firms around the world appear to spiral downward as well. A key potential contributor to the plight of the non financial firms is the financial crisis itself, in the form of a negative shock to the supply of external finance needed by non financial firms. However, as the two quotes by some leading policymakers and scholars at the beginning of the paper indicate, the idea that non financial firms suffer from a strongly negative supply of finance shock is not universally shared. In addition, if non financial firms do not do well, there can certainly be other causes, such as a contraction of demand for their products. This paper has three objectives. First, it aims to develop a simple framework that can capture and quantify the relative importance of the finance shock to the economic health of non financial firms. Second, in a cross country context, it aims to investigate whether the responsiveness of the real economy to a given finance shock varies by country features that the literature suggests that could matter, such as the type of a financial system, the nature of a monetary and exchange rate regime, or the extent ... • 29. Passing and Human Relationships Passing and Human Relationships The Harlem Renaissance was a turning point for many African Americans. A vast amount of literature was created specifically for this group during this era. For the first time, African Americans were being told that it was okay to be proud of who they were. This new consciousness and self awareness was prominent in many works of literature, but several writers began exploring the darker side of this movement with literature that concentrated on the negative aspects of race relations in America. Nella Larsen s novel Passing concentrates on this theme with the story of Clare, a tragic mulatto who passes as a white person. The fact that she has to deny her identity in order to feel safe eventually leads to her realization that her life has become a lie. Clare tells Irene that she nearly died of terror the whole nine months before Margery (her daughter) was born for fear that she might be dark (Larsen 168). Her husband nicknamed her Nig, because she gets darker each day. Although Clare s desire to return to the African American community outwardly seemed merely whimsical, inwardly, Irene begins to see something groping, and hopeless, and yet so absolutely determined inside this woman (Larsen 200). Clare will stop at nothing to leave the life she once desired in order to re enter the African American community. Clare begins to realize that her desire to return to her African American heritage overshadows any disaster it may cause. In order to get the things she wants badly enough, she d do anything, hurt anybody, throw anything away (Larsen 210). In reality, Clare s ultimate loss of soul is realized in the fact that she is willing to forsake her family, including her daughter, in order to reclaim her racial identity. This, not her eventual death, becomes Clare s ultimate tragedy. She loses something of her own soul living in the world of white men. Clare feels that society forces her to abandon her family simply because part of her is African American. The fact that Clare pretends to be white in order to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Social Media And Traditional Media Traditional media has failed to live up to its fourth estate role. This has lead us to the question, can the more modern, social media, make up for the lack of success that traditional media has had in fulfilling this watchdog role for the people? Kemp s rules of CIDRA1 apply to social media as they do with traditional media. Thus, we must determine what, if any, obstacles are present in preventing social media from completing this role. More specifically, do the five filters that Chomsky highlights apply to social media as they do to traditional media? Or does the fundamental structure of social media allow for it to accomplish a fifth estate role? I argue that social media is more effective at playing a watchdog role than traditional media. Social media is built on a platform that has the interest of working for the people in terms of freedom of distributing ideas and checking elite power in liberal democracies. Furthermore, ...traditional media formats are no longer the only politically relevant forms of media (Metzgar, Maruggi, 2009, p. 149). The reason that social media can have higher success in acting as a watchdog role stems from one central theme: when it comes to social media, less of Chomsky s filters lie between the person wanting to distribute an idea and the ability to have this idea delivered to the public. We must understand the foundation of social media, and determine if it can meet the standards brought by Kemp. This, along with determining if Chomsky s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This picture of the Wild West is largely in place due to the romanticizing of the West by Hollywood. Movies portraying the West are filled with stereotypes, whether they are purposeful or not, that do not accurately show what defines the Western persona. Stereotypical situations such as Indians being depicted as savages and noble sheriffs saving the day leave out certain facts that defined the Wild West. In addition to hardship in mining, many Americans on the frontier experienced challenges in farming. At first it was difficult for Americans to grow crops in the West, but eventually technology of agriculture was able to give Americans the ability to grow crops more efficiently. Wild West was full of trials, and living in it was certainly not an easy task. It is impossible to write about hardship in the Wild West without talking about the hardship that Native Americans faced. The war on Indians by the United States government focused on relocating all Native Americans to reservations so that Americans could settle in more lands. For this reason, many Native Americans undoubtedly fought back against the United States government. This led to violence and the slaughtering of Indians for which the Wild West is known. One famous event concerning the Indian Wars was the Wounded Knee Massacre. Dee Brown described this event in her novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, saying that the United States 7th Cavalry Regiment opened up on them, firing almost a shell a second, raking the Indian camp, shredding the teepees with flying shrapnel, killing men, women, and children. In the thermodynamic viewpoint, the concept of entropy is the transformation of heat to work. However, in general chemistry the viewpoint of entropy is the measure of disorder. There are some different and similar between 3 viewpoints. The common in 3 viewpoints are that they were trying to explain the second the law of thermodynamics. Also, Boltzaman stated that entropy is the measure of the disordered; it is just like information is a measure of order when we compare that to information theory. From Shannon s viewpoint, information becomes mathematically defines quantity that represents the degree of choice applied in forming a particular symbol or message sequence out of a number of possible ones, and entropy becomes a measure of the rate of transfer of the information in the message. An Theoretical School District, School, And A Classroom In this paper I am going to present an theoretical school district, school, and a classroom as examples of the ideal that our educational system should strive to achieve. The philosophy my schools will be based on is one of equality. Every single child will have an opportunity to receive the best possible education. However, we will never lower our standards for the sake of equality. Each child will be pushed to his or her personal best, not an average standard. Before talking about what goes on inside the schools, I d like to mention the district itself. There will be no alternative school choices, bussing, or deliberate desegregation practices. Each school will be remarkably similar to the others in the district so that every child may receive a similar education regardless of the neighborhood they live in. When students are separated to different schools for any reason (academic talent, wealth, interests, race, gender) they fail to interact with different types of people that they will undoubtedly encounter in the real adult world. In addition, I feel that is very important for children from the same neighborhood to attend the same school in order to increase a sense of community. Finally, as the Case Study of Boulder Valley points out, school choice takes valuable resources away from teaching and places them in school competition (Howe 144).
