Examples Of Westernization Of Asia
Dannielle Vogel
Professor Scott James
History 101
Microtheme #2
The Westernization of Asia
The mid to late 1800s was a time of intensive change for many on the Asian continent. It was a time
for innovation and modernization in which some embraced, while others fought to halt progress and
maintain tradition. Japan was the most positively affected by westernization as a country, and they
utilized it in ways to benefit their country and still maintain their independence and identity. China and
Korea were bystanders to the change, they did not welcome westernization or foreign influences, and
according to Fukuzawa Yukichi, they did ...not know how to progress either personally or as a nation,
(Yukichi, 1885). In his article Good bye Asia, Yukichi speaks of Japan s embrace of westernization as
a commodity, he is an enthusiastic advocate for the convenience awarded by modern transportation
and the necessary changes to Japan s government system.
Japan was among the first Asian civilizations to embrace innovation with open arms. Though their
respect for traditions did not waiver, they were (minus the ruling caste) open to change and
advancements in technology. Asian cultures have, for the entirety of history, had more advancements
in technology and have placed a higher value on education than almost any other culture around the
world. It is no surprise that when the Japanese found out about the railroad system, that they would
want to construct their own railways to enhance

Civil Society And Its Prospects For A Democratic Transition
Civil Society in Cuba and Its Prospects for a Democratic Transition
4/23/12
Although evidence has shown that civil society is developing in Cuba, the country will probably not
undergo a democratic transition in the near future. Civil society is still repressed by the government,
independent media is mostly silenced, and many of Cuba s citizens appear understandably apathetic.
Cuba will only transition to democracy, develop a democratic political culture, and consolidate its
democracy only when civil society develops to a position of organization, strength, and mass support.
This essay seeks to analyze the major impediments in Cuba s prospects for democracy.
Political History
Cuba was one of the last Latin American nations to gain independence. The island won its
independence from Spain in 1898, but was taken over by the United States after its victory in the
Spanish American War. In 1902, Cuba won its independence from the United States. In 1940, Batista
was elected president but was voted out of office in 1944. From 1944 until 1952, the country was
ruled by civilian presidents who had the support of political parties. In 1952, Batista orchestrated a
coup after being out of office for eight years and presided over a seven year military dictatorship.
Batista s anti communism won him the support of the United States, but his administration was
extremely corrupt and his closeness with the United States angered many Cubans. In addition, under

The Dying Industry of Brick Production in Norway
A condensed history about the production of Tegle stein in Norway. From the first introduction of
fired clay bricks by monks in the early twelfth century. To what affects the Black Death had on
production and innovation leading into the 17th century. The 1850 s became the golden time for brick
production in Norway with new innovations and technics brought in from Germany. As with all
golden times there always is a down turn. The end of the Second World War signaled the start of this
down turn, with a slow attrition of the brickworks one by one over 90% were closed by 1970. The
competition of cement, wood and other building products gave way to only one factory surviving and
producing bricks and specialty products of Tegle in Norway today.
Introduction
Norwegian brick manufacturing and related history should pay homage to the thousands of years of
brick building and production from China to the Middle East, eventually these technics arrived and
spread throughout Europe.
Some of the oldest known Tegleproduction brick production was found in I Tell Aswad, Syria where
archeologists found brick rubble from around 7500 B.C, and in Jericho, north of the Dead Sea where
foundations and ruins of a house from around the same time made of fired clay. Later the Egyptians
and Romans became great users of brick in all aspects of building construction. Yes, there was use of
natural stone especially in purpose built temples, palaces and pyramids, there is an Egyptian

The Definition Of Time
If people were to hear the number 3,600, some would note that it is large, while others would say the
number is small. It is all comparative; it depends on the person, depends on the number, depends on
the unit that number is in. In tangible objects, 3,600 lightbulbs is enough to light the homes in a
neighborhood, and many would agree that it is large. In grains of sand, it s not even enough to form a
zen garden. But 3,600 represents the number of seconds in an hour, a time frame in which people can
take as a short or long amount of time. Isn t it fascinating how a number as large as 3,600 can be
synonymous with a number as small as one?

The X s placed on the calendar symbolize the countdown of each passing day. When those X s fill a
page on the calendar, a month has gone by and before you know it, the year has passed. Perhaps this is
why calendars are always adorned with beautiful photography or adorable photos of puppies; to soften
the blow and distract from the idea that life is passing by. It seems so strange that days are constantly
passing and with the celebration of every birthday, we are truly celebrating another year closer to the
eminent end of our lives.
With that idea looming on the mind, I wonder, why do humans let something as artificial as time hold
them back and control their whole life? Humans created time. They transformed the concept of the
Earth orbiting the Sun into a tangible tick on a clock. It is possible to physically watch time pass down
to the second: to watch the seconds of our lives fleeting. Time is merely a concept that has become a
do all end all. If we know that life could simply end at any minute, why is it that we are always
waiting for the right moment ?
People miss so many opportunities waiting for the right moments . They wait for a certain feeling, like
the earth will somehow send them a sign telling them to take a chance. Opportunities cannot just spell
themselves out. People have to decide for themselves when to take a chance,

Descriptive Essay On Dance
Bryan is a free spirit type‒all smiles and full of life. Despite his teaching position, he was one of the
youngest of the guys there at 21 years old. Having danced for nearly 6 years and teaching for 3, he has
found his place in dance more than anywhere else. It s a really great outlet for self expression, and its
something you can do when you grow older, he laughed. I just love the stylization and personality you
can infuse into your dancing. Chairs lining the entryway were quickly filled with personal belongings.
Although it served as an informal changing area, the most well prepared students came already
dressed with the necessary dance items in their bags. The dark colored outfits were especially
important. Not only did the class looked unified, but it also gave each student an expressive and
distinguishable style. Despite the routine of bringing these items, sweat towels, yoga mats, and other
items were available for the students to borrow from if they forgot their own. One student, in
particular, Anna, seemed to struggle with the simple weekly ritual of remembering her belongings. As
the students unrolled their yoga mats on the dance floor, Anna ran off to the bathroom to change and
scoured the designated lockbox in search of a mat she liked. Although Anna did not comply with the
standard behavior of the subculture, Bryan did not expect all of the students to be equally familiar
with the pre class routine. Anna was obviously the most recent addition to the class,

Realistic Vs Romantic Love In A Midsummer Night’S Dream.
Realistic vs Romantic Love in A Midsummer Night s Dream William Shakespeare s writing has stayed
very applicable through the years. It was applicable to the times when he wrote his works and is
applicable today in similar and different ways. A key theme throughout Shakespeare s work is love,
one of the most fundamental human experiences and emotions. Throughout A Midsummer Night s
Dream, the theme of love is built up and dissected. The characters are passionate about love from the
beginning. The main conflict originates from love itself. Shakespeare builds up the idea of love and
then begins to challenge our interpretation of love. He focuses on juxtaposing the romantic idea of
love with the more realist nature of love. This comparison of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, when thinking about the period that the play was written and even more where it was set
love seems to fade into actuality of the situation. Fathers could determine who their daughters ended
up with. The fact that a couple would run away to an area that laws did not apply in just to get married
was just something that people would have thought about not actually done. The fact that Shakespeare
would even put it on written page and have it performed shows that he at least thought that love is at
least a partially romantic ideal. It is later in the play that he begins to question that with how the
characters end up that eventually creates his full interpretation of love as an ideal. Throughout the play
Shakespeare makes cynical comments about love and the feeling that people express towards one
another. This is also meant to contrast with the romantic view of love. Lord, what fools these mortals
be! (3.2.115) Robin explains as he questions the actions of the esteemed and troubled couples. In the
play this is the point where Oberon is using the love potion to get certain couples to fall in love with
one another. This act impedes the natural progression of love. This intervention is used by
Shakespeare to focus on the infallibility and cynicism of love. Oberon is not using this potion for love
s sake. It is for his own personal agenda and amusement. Being able to alter and fiddle with love in
this matter reveals the cynicism of love:

As You Go Creating A Missional Culture Of Gospel Centered...
Book Review: As you Go Creating a Missional Culture of Gospel Centered Students Alvin L. Reid
explains and covers multiple ideas, issues, subjects, and solutions pertaining to missional student
ministry. Throughout reading the book it is evident that Reid is not only extremely passionate about
the missional aspect of the student ministry, but also the reasoning behind this aspect. Reid s chapters
recognize the issues that many student ministries deal with and how the ministry can go from just an
event to a mission ministry. Throughout this book review I will summarize the content and highlight
the key components that Reid speaks about. In regards to what Reid explains about a missional student
ministry I will speak of how it will affect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also claims, This book is not intended to focus on what is wrong in student ministry, however, but
to offer a new (or renewed) way of thinking (Reid 18). Here Reid clearly states what the purpose of
this book is and not to necessarily fix the ministry, but rather enhance it and provide a new way of
thinking about missions. Reid then goes on throughout chapter one to explain in detail the purposes in
missional ministry and why. In this section Reid explains that the students today as a generation are
leaning toward challenges and making a difference. He even goes as far as defining this word,
Missional: to see the world with the eyes of a missionary, to think like a missionary and to relate to
others as a missionary with a message of the gospel. In short, life is ministry. Make disciples as you go
(Reid 27). Reid goes on explaining the missional shift that has happened in the western church and
how this can impact the student ministry as a whole. This idea of missional ministry in the student
ministry is simply not in perspective and Reid covers this. He goes throughout many chapters
explaining how the bar has been set too low and why this missional aspect is not being brought up in
student ministry. Reid then centers in on the gospel in chapter two and what this means as it impacts
the missional ministry. The main point of this is so that one understands that the reasoning of the
gospel is not solely

The style of cut string stairs I chose is in Victorian style as it s the most common historical style been
reproduced today and also original Victorian staircases remain intact in many homes throughout the
western world dating back as far as the 1830s. The exact stairs I propose to reproduce is the stairs
pictured on the title page. I found these stairs after extensive searches of old Victorian style homes on
Google, the staircase is from a house in Yorkshire, England and the house has been published many
times for its interior design. I intend on informing the current homeowners on my project and I will try

I plan on finishing these stairs in a spray lacquer finish. I think this type of finish would be best as its
hard wearing and easy to apply coat after coat. A spray lacquer finish is quick drying so it is does not
take long before many coats can be applied. Context and Rational Regulations in today s joinery
design can affect how some aspects of joinery cannot be exactly reproduced. The main area in joinery
were this is relevant is in stair design because for example older stair designs would have had bigger
risers which does not comply with modern regulations. This can take from the original look of the
stairs but to comply with regulations stairs are reproduced in measurements that comply with
regulations. However when replacing a traditional style windows it can be by regulation to replace it
with pieces of exact dimensions to keep with the previous style. Regulations on the design and
geometry of external joinery are the strictest area as and windows are considered the eyes of the
building. So essentially the reasons for regulations on stair design is due to that they have a everyday
practical use and need to be safe as a lot of accidents in the home are from falling down stairs. Another
main area where this has implications on stair design is the regulation with the gap between balusters
as the regulation state they cannot be

Symbolism In Dead Poets Society
Dead Poets Society is a classic film from 1989 featuring Robin Williams, which takes place during the
50 s at a traditionalist boarding school for the rich with extremely strict customs and a straightforward
message: Tradition, Honor, Discipline and Excellence are all keys to academic success. Within the
film, elements such as character development, conflict, setting and symbolism together with a variety
of techniques are used to support the prevalent theme: Tradition can restrict individuality leading to
progressive thoughts. Mr. Nolan, the headmaster of Welton, is a strict individual who is shown
throughout the movie to have an extremely conservative viewpoint aiming to engrave the 4 pillars of
education into the minds of his pupils. As Nolan s character is developed, his ultimate goal of
restricting the individuality of the students and preserving the social customs of the academy become
increasingly apparent through his dialogue. At first Mr. Nolan appears to demonstrate the traditionalist
views of the academy through his inauguration speech in order to please the parents that have spent
their money on sending their children to an elite boarding school. However as the film continues it
becomes apparent that Nolan takes the customs and high standards of the school extremely seriously,
as evidenced by his increasingly bitter punishments for those that do not conform to his ideals. At first,
when Charlie on behalf of the Dead Poets Society decides to write an anonymous

The Idiot Book Analysis
Kurosawa s three hour adaptation of The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a complicated four part novel,
had to cut out, simplify, and change the original work in order to adapt it to film. However, looking at
the specific changes Kurosawa made, specifically towards the end of his film, it is clear that the
changes he made weren t merely for the sake of time. Although Kurosawa s modifications might seem
random, changes like the bedroom being hot in the book as compared to cold in the movie, eliminating
the wedding scene entirely, and most tellingly having Ayako call herself an idiot with the last words of
the movie dramatically narrow the argument in the story of The Idiot. While one of the central themes
of the original novel was the main character s, Myshkin, Russian Orthodox Christianity, Kurosawa cut
it out entirely and instead moved the focus of his movie onto the definition of idiocy.
Taken at first glance, the ending to the novel seems more suspenseful, but when examined closer the
movie is just as thrilling as the novel. As Myshkin and Rogozhin lie in bedroom beside Nastasya s
corpse, the room is sweltering. This clearly uncomfortable situation parallels the unsettling feeling that
Dostoevsky desires readers to have with Myshkin comforting Rogozhin. Although this course of
action is the natural conclusion to Myshkin s professed Christianity, readers are more likely to extend
Nastasya pity and compassion, and refrain from giving it to her murderer. As Kurosawa

Acceptance in The Serect Poems of Emily Dickinson and The...
The understanding of belonging is not a concrete block, but a dynamic plain fertilised by interaction
with an individual s context. This allows equilibrium to form between beliefs of identity, and
uncovering the true meaning of belonging. Both nineteenth century poet Emily Dickinson and
Modernist author Margery Williams explore this complex state of acceptance through their works, The
Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson and The Velveteen Rabbit . Paradox in What mystery pervades a
well , and mechanical metaphor in the microcosmic short story detail that differentiating truth and
imagination is integral to cultivate an understanding of belonging. Stichomythia in The Velveteen
Rabbit , and economic discourse in I had been hungry all the years depict that acceptance can only be
achieved through overcoming the struggle between yearning to belong and facing societal barriers.
Finally, it is discovered that personal notions of identity are formed through experiences in the larger
world, which creates a cemented understanding of belonging. This is portrayed through an extended
weather metaphor by Margery Williams and inclusive language in I died for beauty . Together, the
composers create texts which bring the audience on a journey of acceptance and identity, in turn
enriching their understandings of belonging.
Experiences of acceptance within one s context allow individuals to discover the difference between

THE ISSUE OF COPYRIGHTABILITY OF CHARACTERS
I. INTRODUCTION
Characters exist in human, animal, and even extra terrestrial form, in literature, films and other forms
of dramatic visualizations, and are shaped by their names, personalities, characteristics and manners.
There are several such characters that the public is familiar with, and such popular figures form part of
an industry worth trillions, thereby necessitating protection for them against duplication. Enter
copyright law. This law, which finds its origin in the Statute of Anne, seeks to strike a balance between

These include visual characters (as observed in movies, plays, etc) and animated characters (such as
cartoons and comics). On the other hand, fictional characters are described using words as a medium,
and coupled with the reader s imagination, they form a picture in the mind. Since pictorial
representations are more relatable and easier to commit to memory, graphic characters are easily
accorded protection under Copyright Law. However, it should be kept in mind that although the
Copyright Act defines artistic work , such work is inclusive of drawings, paintings and sculptures, not
characters . For instance, copyright law may enable an artist to protect a sketch of Mickey Mouse
under the category of artistic work, however, the character of Mickey Mouse is derived by the reader
from the various episodes or comics it is found in, and therefore doesn t fall under the ambit of artistic
work. Further, the book or movie the character appears in may be copyrighted as a whole (as a literary
or cinematographic work), but that doesn t prevent reproduction of the character.
However, it has been observed that the courts have exercised leniency in granting protection to
graphic characters with visual representations that are easily identifiable. In the case of Hill v Whalen
Martell , the court opined that the stage characters of Nutt and Giff were absolute copies of the
plaintiff s characters Mutt

The LA Riots
The Change The LA Riots Brought
African Americans in Los Angeles and throughout the United States have experienced racial
oppression for centuries. Rodney King was an African American motorist who inspired positive police
reforms after he had a brutal conflict and was beaten by four members LAPD. Rodney King s
encounter resulted in a social and legal compromise because the incident made people aware of the
police brutality, gave African Americans a voice against police abuse, and resulted in reforms to the
way that the LAPD responded to the communities of color.
The Los Angeles Riots were the second Riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took
place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more than
50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30,1992, writers Richard A. Serrano and Tracy
Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying hours after the verdicts were
announced, angry demonstrators torched, buildings, looted stores and assaulted passerby as a civic
leader pleaded for calm. (Serrano and Wilkinson 1) The riots started after the verdict was given,
people were filled with anger after the police were all acquitted of all charges.
Secondly, The riots helped bring a change to the African Americans because before the riots they didn
t have a voice, any protest or march they did didn t receive attention. When the riots happened, they
were heard, the search for attention had

The Himalayas As A Barrier For The World
One Better Village to Live for All of Us
Some historians believe that the Himalayas acted as a barrier for the last five thousand years,
separating civilized development in China from the rest of the world. (China kept much to herself until
about two hundred years ago. Then the British, using gunpowder invented by the Chinese, forced the
door to China wide open to the West, starting the most humiliating chapter in Chinese history and the
interactions with the rest of the world). Developments in China and the West progressed at a similar
pace, despite their engaging in little intellectual communications. Great thinkers emerged in both parts
of the world about 2500 years ago, paving the way for their respective civilizations to develop
culturally and intellectually, albeit taking completely different approaches.
Confucius (born 551 BC) is the most influential figure in the Chinese history. His thoughts and those
of his followers laid the foundation, the foundation is Confucian ethics described by Fung Yu Lan in A
History of Chinese Philosophy. This is fundamentally different from the major civilizations in other
parts of the world, where traditional religions have played more dominant roles in the course of
development. We are not religious because we are philosophical, from A History of Chinese
Philosophy, for example, death often plays mysterious roles in almost all forms of religions, but not in
the mind of Confucius. When facing a question about the meaning

Analysis Of Our Divided Political Heart By John F....
Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek
to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future, quoted by John F.
Kennedy at the Loyola college alumni banquet. E.J. Dionne is a political journalist and commentator
for The Washington Post also a University Professor in the Foundations of Democracy and Culture at
the McCourt School of Public Policy. In Dionne s book, Our Divided Political Heart, he talks about
how American citizens cannot agree on who we are because we cannot agree on whom we have been.
The American custom, Dionne expresses, points not to be self sufficient and selfish, but to even out
our compassion of individual freedom and our loyalty to the public. Understanding of our nation s
history, Dionne shows an insightful examination of how self reliance is toxic to our present political
ambience. He participates the Tea Party s involvement with American history, but also shows it s
catastrophic past while supporting the Wall Street movement in America s public and Populist
traditions.
Dionne asserts that the American past has continuously been described by friction between the basic
morals of individualism and community. Americans have treasured liberty, independent opportunity
and self individualism and still maintaining the significance of the general public s duty and civic
morality. The founders indicate these morals as liberalism and republicanism, and the attempt

She strives to divide her time between her family and her job, which helps her achieve balance in her
life. Sometimes, however, there are difficult people and challenging situations that come up in life that
can bring her down.
Kynes deals with challenging people and situations by taking the high road. She does what is right,
both morally and ethically, and when people start to frustrate her, she still acts respectfully towards
them. As she is being kind, to those frustrating people, she thinks, [I hope] that my actions and
reactions will influence them to make better choices, which goes back to advice her mother has given
her.
Kynes admits that the best advice she has ever received is from her mother: Always take the high road,
and Kill them with kindness, no matter who they are or what they have done. Kynes continues to
follow this advice to this day. Kynes added that what she takes away from her mother s advice is,
When you give to others, you will someday be rewarded. Pay it forward. Kynes has gained wisdom

The Stephen Glass Film
Before watching the movie, I knew about the Stephen Glass case but I did not know detailed events
that led up to his Glass s case being exposed. In my opinion, the movie did a great job as far as
casting. The actors in the movie understood their roles and played it well although there were some
moments that could have been done differently. In my opinion, there were some parts in the film that
could have been dramatize and much more intense because the situation and seriousness of what was
occurring called for it.
To begin, the casting of the film was well thought out. The characters played their parts well
especially the main characters Stephen Glass played by Hayden Christensen, Chuck Lane played by
Peter Sarsgaard, and Caitlin Avey played by Chloe Sevigny. Christensen embodied Glass s persona so
well that it almost seemed like he was actually Glass. He was charming towards his coworkers and
persuasive as well. These characteristic of Glass was essential and needed to be seen ... Show more

The main problem I had with the film was the lack of intensity and seriousness when addressing Glass
about his false stories. For example, there was a scene where chuck took Glass to a building he made
up in one of his stories. In the moment Chuck asks Glass several times to confirm if the building was
real and Glass confirms that the building was just his imagination and creativity. In this particular
scene, I felt like Chuck should have been livid. Nevertheless, chuck did seem angry but not to the
extreme. Another scene that could have been exaggerated a bit more was when Chuck started to take
down all of the stories Glass wrote. At this point in the film, Chuck began to realize the abundance of
lies that was printed and published. If I was the head editor reading the lies published in my papers, I
would have been furious but Lane was calm and poised for the most part. He basically took down each

Similarities Between Heart Of Darkness And Apocalypse Now
Heart of Darkness and its modern film adaptation Apocalypse Now are two masterpieces of art, by
Joseph Conrad and Francis Ford Coppola respectively, seeking to show the truth of their respective
worlds, that explore themes of conflict and darkness. They explore the idea of going native and
venturing into the abyss of Nietzsche, who once wrote, in Beyond Good and Evil: He who fights with
monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. If you gaze long enough into the abyss,
the abyss will also gaze into you. These two texts have a lot of similarities, namely Kurtz and the use
of smoke. The differences between the two are noticeable, but they are intentional, and often not as
different as they first appear. These being mainly the locations: Vietnam (the Nung River) and the

is not too different from Charles Marlow, is the film s main character and chief storyteller, who also

Compare And Contrast The American Revolution And Mexican...
Comparison of the American Revolution and Mexican Movement for Independence On July 4, 1776.
An unprecedented event occurred that will change the world forever. A colony successfully won its
own war against their mother nation, and became a newly formed independent country. The idea of
nations breaking apart and forming new countries took the world by storm. Soon after, countries
residing in Latin America also began to break away from their mother land. By the 1900 s many Latin
American countries were form. One of these newly formed nation is Mexico. I will be comparing the

the colonists in retaliation against the way King George the Third was ruling. ... Show more content

He wrote a pamphlet call Common Sense, in this pamphlet, which was published in late 1775, and

declaring the independence of the United States is passed on 1776, this is the first time someone
declared independence from Britain. The document is known as the Declaration of Independence. In it
was an explanation of why separation from England was necessary, a new theory of government, 27
grievances listed against King George, and a declaration of war. The British ultimately lost the war
because they controlled the cities but not the countryside, leading them to be in the middle of all the
colonists. The british general made key mistakes, and their soldiers didn t put their heart into the

Essay Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby
Carl Jung and The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald s classic story about the shallow aristocracy of the 1920 s
American society, is the topic of much interpretation. This paper presents the proposition that the
Roaring Twenties were years dominated by an SP (part of Carl Jung s archetypal psychology that will
later be explained in more depth) society and the characters in The Great Gatsby reflect and were
deeply affected by this fact. Daisy will be analyzed herein, as well as the effect that an SP society had
on her actions and development.
The human psyche has been the basis of study for millennia. Dating back to Hippocrates around 370
BC, the earliest belief was that people are fundamentally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What is SP ? In Jungian terms it is basically the group of sensory people who are free with their time,
S and P being two of four letters that fully make up a persons temperament. According to Jung, when
the two characteristics are combined, the affected person is naturally playful and careless. They live in
the moment and have no time for rules and regulations. They are the majority of the worlds
entertainers, athletes, soldiers, etc. Where there is excitement, there are SP s. Status and appearance
are often important to SP s, yet not so much what is thought of them by society. When I say that the 20
s were an SP era, I mean just that: the people were of loose ethics and wanted to be free of
responsibility. Of course this does not encompass everyone, but it is the stereotype of the times, just as
not all people were hippies in the 1960 s, the 60 s are stereotypically the hippie era. Don t be afraid

Nokia and Microsoft Partnership Analysis
Nokia and Microsoft Partnership Analysis
Introduction:
Microsoft is the most established software giant and Nokia is the company that is the icon for
electronic and communication equipments. Microsoft had a partnership with the computer
manufacturer IBM that made the software of Microsoft from DOS to modern Windows 8 famous and
most used. The same underlying principle of symbiosis has been used inn this alliance. There are
many reasons why Microsoft had to enter the cell phone industry. Arch Rival Apple came out with the
iPhone and revolutionized the mobile world. Though the gadget was not a direct competitor, Microsoft
was out of a huge potential market, namely the mobile segment.
More and more applications that were used in the PC and laptop began to be used with the mobile. It
was with the availability of internet with the mobile that made companies like Nokia look for
platforms to deliver the service including surfing and connecting to social media that prompted
developers to begin developing programs for this segment. It was also this development that made
Microsoft consider going into the mobile sector since the company had already established itself in the
tablet segment.
What were the forces leading to the partnership?
The fact that during the beginning of this century many developments occurred both with the internet
and with telephony must be considered. The major developments were the availability of the internet
on small machines like the mobile, PDA and

Communication Skills For Effective Communication
Criteria:
Based on your examples from each principle of effective communication (General, Interpersonal and
Written), describe the potential barriers (problems) to effective communication in the presentation, as
well. Remember to state the problem and then how this can affect communication.
Introduction
I am going to describe how communication skills are used effectively in the presentation.
General Communication Skills
General communication skills are a way of expression or exchanging ideas and thoughts between
people. We can use the different techniques of communication skills such as cultural differences,
adapting to audience, format of the language, accuracy of the related topic, engaging an audience and
be aware of the time zone. All these skills should be properly used between each others.
Cultural differences
It is known that cultural differences exist between people with different national traditions, languages
and religions. People may behave according to their own beliefs and this may look unusual. People
may misunderstand each other. For example Scottish and English have different accents. The words
are pronounced with a different dialect.
Other countries may have to use different meanings of the same hand gestures during the presentation.
For example same hand gestures can have a lot of different meaning in countries as United States of
America means OK, Japan means money, Russia means zero and in Brazil you can insult someone.

A Research Study On Pet Scans
Neuroscience has evolved in the last 20 years due to the development of new machines and techniques
which can measure the structure and the activity of the brain itself. This has allowed cognitive
neuroscientists to conduct more in depth research of the function of the brain. One method used by
neuroscientist s is Position Emission Tomography (PET). A PET scan measures the blood flow, brain
metabolism and glucose intake. During the procedure, the patient is given a harmless dose of a
radioactive substance, which is most likely 2 deoxyglucose (2 DG) which is taken up by cells and
accumulates in active neurons (Pinel, 2011). The radioactive element releases positrons which are
detected by the scan showing which parts of the brain are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This limits cognitive neuroscientists in PET research as due to its invasive nature, they won t be able
to investigate the early development of brain function using this technique (Martin, 2013).
Another technique adopted by neuroscientists is the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI unlike
PET measures the brain structure rather than the activity. It is measured by the waves emitted from
hydrogen atoms which are activated by the radio waves from the magnetic field that is passed over the
head during the procedure (Pinel, 2011). This is detected by the scanner and is then altered into a
structural image. MRI is a much more detailed scan compared to for example, CT scans, as they
provide clearer images of the brain which makes it easier for neuroscientists to identify any
abnormalities in brain structure. Furthermore, the technique has relatively high spatial resolution and it
can produce images in three dimensions which can give a more advanced view into the brain (Martin,
2005). Moreover, MRI has led to the discovery of a number of brain abnormalities in schizophrenia.
For example, an MRI study found that compared to healthy subjects, schizophrenic patients showed
smaller volumes of grey matter in the temporal lobe and smaller volumes of white matter in the frontal
lobe. Schizophrenic patients also had a higher volume of

Steroids in Major League Baseball
Steroids in Major League Baseball Anabolic steroids have been abused by Major League Baseball
players for years, it s time to forever ban the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs before they ruin

not the game everyone remembers a century ago or even half a century, with honest players playing
for the love of the game, not cutting corners and taking undeserved achievements. In 1990 Congress
passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act, but didn t say how the offenders would be caught. The next
year MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent made it clear in a memo that this was very much relevant to
baseball. (Rymer) The memo read as follows: The possession, sale or use of any illegal drug or
controlled substance by Major League players and personnel is strictly prohibited. Major League
players or personnel involved in the possession, sale or use of any illegal drug or controlled substance
are subject to discipline by the Commissioner and risk permanent expulsion from the game... This
prohibition applies to all illegal drugs and controlled substances, including steroids or prescription
drugs for which the individual in possession of the drug does not have a prescription. (ESPN) Every

Second Defense Business Analysis
Hello class! This week we are continuing with our discussion of our chosen paper topics. There is a
significant amount of information that needs to be covered this week, so let s get started.
First, let me explain how I envision my company being organized. For those of you that don t
remember, my company s name is Second Defense, and it s a company that provides helicopter air
support to local law enforcement agencies that don t have the manning/money/other resources to
operate an air support unit within their department. For Second Defense, I am focusing mostly on the
Albuquerque New Mexico area, since it is an area within law enforcement that I am very familiar.
My company will be organized into three main branches: Administration, Operations, and Support.
The Administration branch is responsible for the overall hierarchy of the company, such as the owner
and upper management. Upper management would coordinate between the branches and day to day ...

These applications are: enterprise systems, and supply chain systems. First, enterprise systems is
necessary because enterprise systems enables the company s resources to be planned. The main
resources of Second Defense are materials needed to operate the helicopter. I have no real experience
with helicopter maintenance, but from speaking with helicopter crew chiefs I ve learned that the entire
engine needs to be disassembled and inspected every so many hours of operation. The second
application that is needed for my company to function efficiently is supply chain systems. Again, this
application is primarily used to ensure that the parts for the helicopter arrive when needed. I see the
Administration branch handling all or most of the enterprise applications within Second Defense.
Unlike the Administration branch, the Support branch is responsible for the business

Model And Assumptions Of The Royle Nichols Model
Model and Assumptions The Royle Nichols model allows estimation of abundance from multiple
observations of present absent animals without specifically marking the animal. This model represents
the spatial distribution of the species observed. Several assumptions are made but two of them are
fundamental for this model. First one is that the spatial distribution of the animals across survey sites
follows Poisson distribution, and second is the probability of detecting an animal at a site is a function
of how many animals are actually at that site. The Poisson distribution represents the mechanism of
spatial distribution which is simply how many animals occur at each site within the study area. This
model assumes that each site is home to a certain number of species and this number does not change
overtime, which means no deaths, births, immigration or emigration of the observed species. The
Poisson distribution has as the mean parameter λ ( lambda ) which is the mean abundance across the
observed sites.
The probability density formula of for Poisson distribution is F(x)= (e^ λ)* (λ^x)/ x! Where x is the
number of animals at a given site and F(x) is the generic term of any probability distribution. Given
this information we can find the probability that a specific number of animals occupy a given site. The
graph for this formula takes different shapes. For example, if we calculate this function for λ=3 and
x=5 animals, the result is a probability of 0.10. The graph

The Rise of a Mash-up Culture Essay
A great deal has been said about the move from physical media to a ubiquitous, digital culture. Some
decry the downfall of the vinyl record, falling compact disc sales, the cheapening and degrading of an
art form. I ll try to stay away from unverifiable judgements about the direction modern culture is
moving in. More interesting is the way musical creation is changing as a result of new technologies,
whether we like it or not. What comes to mind is hyperreality what Jean Baudrillard called the
generation by models of a real without origin or reality (166). Digital representations, originally
intended to recreate the original sound waves of the music, are losing their point of origin and
becoming musical works on their own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its pointless to look for the original blueprint of a digital representation, because it s independent of
the hardware it s stored in, and meaningful only in the information it encodes. Hyperreality results
from a loss of distinction between the representations and the things they re intended to represent. In
our culture, the separation between a song and the digital file of a song is becoming trivial. Computers
allow information to be torn free of its original context, and reinterpreted upon retrieval.
Representation engines are the ideal enablers of hyperreality, giving almost limitless power to reorder
simulacra upon simulacra.
The internet takes the representational capacities of computers, and spreads them over a vast symbolic
network. Anyone with an internet connection instantly gains manipulative control over a whole world
of digital abstractions. These have the unique property of not being tied down to any specific physical
origin. It follows that they re infinitely recreatable, and intimately tied to their user defined context.
This decontextualization began, to a lesser extent, with the advent of audio cassettes, allowing the
creation of mix tapes. A mix tape lets the listener take small parts (usually whole songs) from different
physical source material (records), and combine them into a new whole, consisting of copied parts.
This process, known as dubbing, creates an experience that is, at least in part, distinct from each

Although there have not been systematic, detailed investigations to determine the extent to which
graduate programs have included curriculum in the area of abuse, the professional literature suggests
that graduate training programs have largely ignored abuse as a specific content area. Alpert (1990),
for example, noted that there is relatively little formal education and training in child sexual abuse . A
subsequent survey of female psychologists also showed that student teacher sexual contact was quite
common (17%) and that, in hindsight, women believed that they were negatively affected by such
contact (Glaser Thorpe, 1986). These reports of negative effects, particularly when viewed in the
context of ethics and coercion, raise questions of whether such intimacies may in some cases
constitute abuse. Most participants believed that student educator sexual contact was unethical
regardless of whether it occurred during (96.2%) or outside (72.8%) of the working relationship. Only
2.5% of the participants believed that such involvements were not at all coercive if they occurred in
the working relationship; only 17% believed involvements were not at all coercive if they occurred
outside of the working relationship.

Probate Process Analysis
The process of probate involves proving the validity and legitimacy of a will. This only happens after
someone dies and an interested party files the will with the local probate court. The court reviews the
will and decides whether it is valid or not. That is probate in simplest form. But, often probate is not
so simple. Admitting the Will for Probate The first step to the probate process is admitting the will. In
Texas, this is done by submitting an application for probate with the probate court. The person filing
the application can be a spouse, a child, a parent, or any other person named in the will. There is only
a limited period between the time the person dies and the time the will can be admitted to the probate

Alzheimer s Disease, And Vascular Dementia

Dementia is known as being a slow, yet steady decline of one s mental ability. The disease eventually

Yoshitsune Villain
Yoshitsune, the leader of the Minamoto clan was one of the greatest military commanders of his
generation. Yoshitsune had a great military intelligence and conducted many battles becoming one of
the greatest samurais in Japan. In Samurai Rising (Pamela Turner) Yoshitsune portrayed as a hero and
in Of Nightingale That Weeps (Katherine Paterson), he was a villain. In these two books, the character
of Yoshitsune is different and comparable in many ways.
Yoshitsune was a young boy in Ushiwakamaru when his father died in a battle against the Taira clan.
After the death of his father, the Taira captured the retired emperor Go Shirakawa and ever since the
Minamoto was trying to retain the power to the emperor. As Yoshitsune grew up, he trained to become
a samurai and join the Minamoto to cease revenge of the Taira. He directed many battles and was seen
as a hero to the Minamoto and others becoming their military commander. In the perspective of the
Taria, Yoshitsune was seen as a War God that killed off many of their men. In Samurai Rising it stated

What Were The Consequences Of German Imperialism
Germans undertook extensive colonialism in south west Africa, and decided that the land should no
longer belong to the native people. 1880, saw the German s in control of a colony with large amounts
of natives on the land. At this time there were two major native African ethnic groups present. The
Nama or Namaqua, which had a population of around twenty thousand people, and the Herero a group
of cattle herders, which contained around seventy five thousand people. German colonial rule was
harsh and brutal, any type of resistance was met with brutality and severe consequences. The clash
between cultures would lead to a four year war that ended with the systematic murder and
extermination of the ethnic groups: Nama, and Herero. The war officially started in January of 1904
when Herero people attacked farms owned by Germans. Around one hundred and thirty people were
killed, but women, children and missionaries were left alone. The Germans soon took the upper hand
and managed to win the battle, in May of 1904, General Lothar von Trotha became commander, and

The Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. They were people, but they lived
like animals. Although the Cunninghams were close to it, neither families were considered to be part
of the common folk . Atticus says that Scout is part of the common people, whereas the Ewells are
part of their own society, consisting only of themselves. They were allowed to do most of what they
wanted and whenever they wanted because everyone has given up on trying to force people like the
Ewells into a new environment. The Finches are part of the common folk so the Finches are above the
Cunninghams and Ewells on the social class hierarchy. Atticus think the Ewells are like animals
because he has seen the way they lived. They hunted out of season, which was illegal, skipped school,
and wasted money. Mr. Ewell spent their relief checks on green whiskey while his children cried in
pain from hunger. Atticus opinion of the Cunninghams is better because they are kind people. They
always repay for services and never take anything they can t give back. They are trustworthy. The
Cunninghams never took anything they can t pay back. When Mr. Cunningham was one of Atticus
clients, he made sure he paid him plenty. He sent crops after each harvest until Atticus received more
than enough. The finches have no reason to disrespect them only because of their

Daniel Captivity
In 605 B.C during Jehoiakim s reign, the Babylonian s king Nebuchadnezzar took Daniel and his
friends as captives when he besieged Jerusalem. Daniel was taken captive because he fit in the
standards, which the king was searching for: young men, good looking and smart. During the time of
captivity, Daniel, the author of the book of the Bible with the same name, writes about the dreams,
visions and situations he passed in the course of the captivity. Indeed Daniel s actions reflected the
way he faced the situations, showed how he feared and was obedient to God, even when he was
placed in a room full of lions or into a furnace of blazing fire. The story of Daniel begins in the third
year Jehoiakim s reign when he was taken captive from Judah ... Show more content on

Daniel received also a Babylonian s name so he was called Belteshazzar (or Belshazzar) that possibly
means Bel, protect his life. Daniel s character was tested when he decided not to eat the king s food
and proposed to the commander of the officials to eat something different to see they would be
healthier and better looking than the ones eating from the king s chosen food. After a week eating
vegetables, Daniel was healthier and better looking than the other youth. By choosing not to eat the
food from the king s table Daniel was being obedient to God s word because the food chosen by the
king was dedicated to the Babylonian s gods, probably were from unclean animals and the blood was
not taken out. Daniel received the name Belteshazzar because of the Babylonian s gods either Marduk,
or Nebo conceivably to incorporate the culture of the Babylonians and their pagan s gods. God
provided Daniel with intelligence, wisdom and a special gift: the understanding of all kinds of visions
and dreams and as a result of that, Daniel was the one God chose to interpret the dreams of, the king
of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. The Bible says the king was distressed and wanted to kill every wise
men of Babylon, therefore Daniel was one of the wise men. Daniel knew God was merciful and could

Why Math Is Important For Teaching Mathematics And How...
Math Philosophy Paper Math is developing concepts or standards that s important for teaching
mathematics to students from Pre K to high school. In our changing world, those who understand and
can do mathematics will have significant opportunities and options for shaping their future. (NCTM
2000, p.50). The two important tools to be an effective teacher is knowledge of mathematics and how
students learn mathematics. The purposes of math education effect our life since the time we were
able to walk. We were taught how to count on our fingers to being able to write our numbers to ten.
Then as we got older, concepts were more challenging and involved critical thinking to solve the
problems. In society today, math is being utilized in simple to complex avenues such as grocery
shopping, measuring, budgeting, investments, architecture, science and technology to name a few. If
we take a look around our environment signs, buildings, bridges, streets and just the different patterns
and shapes all relate back to mathematics. My role as a math teacher in the classroom would be
creating an inviting math environment for my students, being able to explain math to all my students
in ways that they understand and model math in an effective way. I want to be a leader, share my
knowledge, engage and challenge my students, support them, respect them, be positive and keep them
interested in math. The qualities I would have as an effective teacher is the knowledge and skills and

The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay
Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the coaches
get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in
order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms,
and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, The best coaches still live
by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it. (Brooks) Though strict
coaching can turn some young children and their parents away from sports, it can give kids a good
role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with other people. Parents often
have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role
models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article Organized Sports Can Benefit
Children , says Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today. (Brooks).
Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep coaches doing their job of creating
mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives. Even
if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better to have one outside of the family. A coach
can serve as someone that kids should admire, love, and respect even though they are outside of their
family; this will prepare children for their future of dealing with

Essay On Cybersecurity Breaches
People across the world are becoming disproportionately dependent on modern day technology, which
results in more vulnerability to cyber attacks including cybersecurity breaches. Today, the world
continues to experience inordinate cases of cybersecurity meltdowns. There is a rapid growth in
complexity and volume of cyber attacks, and this undermines the success of security measures put in
place to make the cyberspace secure for users. Cyber attacks on both private and public information
systems are a major issue for information security as well as the legal system. While most states
require government organizations and certain federal vendors to report incidences of data breaches, no
equivalent legislation exists to cover private entities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the consumers affected were also made vulnerable to subsequent identity theft given malicious
attackers stole their personal data. Equifax was directly affected since its stock began to plunge
immediately the news was made public. Additionally, the corporate governance of the company was
tarnished given three Equifax executives sold shares worth around $2 million days after the breach
discovery, and the retiring of the chief security information officers is questionable (Surane Melin,
2017). Also, the company was exposed to litigations with some lobbyists and interest groups pushing
regulators to hold Equifax accountable for the negligence and poor treatment of affected consumers.
The proposed new data security laws will present a greater burden to other corporations. Two such
laws are the Promoting Responsible Oversight of Transactions and Examinations of Credit
Technology (PROTECT), and Freedom From Equifax Exploitation (FREE) will attract more
government scrutiny and limit the type of personal data that companies can collect from customers
(Alperan, Carter, Sofio, 2017). Wikileaks CIA Vault 7 was released on March 7, 2017, when Wikileaks

Argumentative Essay On First Amendment Rights
Part I Intro: An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see
it. (James A. Michener, Space) I am here today arguing a denied, avoided, and controversial topic
[Christian Persecution]; and, I am doing this so that I can make the increasing amount of attacks on
our first amendment rights known. The injustice here is not only the attacks on Christians rights to
religious freedom, but also because it is ignored. The rights of everyone are compromised because no
matter what religion you identify with or even one at all, there is a precedent being set that denying
someone s right is okay. 1,400 documented attacks on religious freedom, at a 15% increase over the
past year and a 133% increase over the past five years. Part II Introduce arguments: This is an
injustice for three main reasons: Number 1: Our first amendment right is being violated. Number 2:
People are penalized for their beliefs. Number 3: People are unable to practice their religions freely.
Part III Reason 1: This is an injustice because our first amendment right is being violated. The first
amendment states that, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of
the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Sweatshops Is Bad
Out of Bad Comes Good
A sweatshop is a factory where workers receive low wages while being forced to work in poor
environments. In general, these workshops produce an abundant amount of the clothing that we wear
everyday. However, few acknowledge the act of sweatshop labor, since it is rarely shown to the public
eye. Ironically, many popular fashion brands that we buy from all recieve clothes that are made in
sweatshops. While sweatshop workers are treated unfairly in the workplace, fast fashion provides
them with jobs and it provides us with the clothing that we constantly demand for. To understand the
topic of sweatshop labor, we must recognize the effects of this controversial working system.
First, we have to consider the conditions that

Literature Review Of Fynbos And Forest Biome
Literature Review
Source 1
Species of special concern program
By Len du Plessis
August 2010
Summary:
Fynbos and forest biomes are the main contributors to vegetation diversity in the Garden Route.
Indigenous forests in the Garden Route cover 35 765.4 ha. The biome of the Garden Route contains
69% of South Africa s sub continent plant species. Approximately 30% of the Garden Route is
covered in fynbos. Mountain and lowland fynbos have been converted into pine plantations, having
huge effects on the spreading of these invasive plants and the biome of the Garden Route. Alien
invasive plants use excessive amounts of water which robs the native plants thereof and are in direct
competition for space and soil nutrients against the natural biome. Alien ... Show more content on

March 2012
Summary
There are short term and long term plans for clearing alien invasive plants. When seed banks of AIP s
are present, the restoration potential is low and the impact on the environment is high. The Garden
Route s fynbos biome is most affected by the AIP s.
Ground should be 60% free of slash, which stimulates germination, in order to control AIP s. In order
to achieve initial restoration goals, alien weeds should be cleared and bear ground should be exposed
followed by a controlled fire through the area as heat and smoke germinates cues required by fynbos
species. Steep slopes and plant species may influence the restoration potential. Controlled fires
prevent local fynbos specie loss. No fire or too frequent fires reduce restoration potential. Initial
clearance of sites includes burning, tilling and pitting, and within rotation management, it includes
ground vegetation clearance, fertilizing, thinning, harvesting and unplanned fires. Variables that
affects the AIP s reduction potential includes annual rainfall (mm), average altitude (m), slope,
geology, soil texture and type, pre plantation vegetation type, alien invasive species present and its
density, erosion and pollution

A Comparison of Blake, Wordsworth and Keats
A Comparison of Blake, Wordsworth and Keats
William Blake, John Keats and William Wordsworth all believe in the depth of the world and the
possibilities of the human heart. However, each poet looks towards different periods in time to capture
meaning in life. Blake looks towards the future for his inspiration, Keats towards the present and
Wordsworth towards the past. Regardless of where each poet looks for their inspiration they are all
looking for the same thing; timeless innocence. Each poet sought to transcend time by creating works
that dealt with life, death, hope and imagination and to discover some kind of deep truth or meaning in
existence. Life and death is an issue that we will all have to deal with at some point in our life ... Show

Technological advancement and social progress were steps backwards for Wordsworth and thus he
looked to the past for his inspiration.
John Keats did not have the luxury time that Wordsworth had to look to the past and reminisce about
things that were because he knew he did not have long to live. Even from a young age Keats felt his
life would be a short one and he so he applied himself to his art with a desperate urgency . Keats died
at twenty six years old and managed to leave behind some of the greatest poetry ever written. He didn
t bother to look toward the future because he knew that he wouldn t live to see it and he didn t look to
the past because he decided that it was more important to live in the moment.
Keats was very aware of his own mortality and his poetry reflected the intensity and the passion of a
man who didn t have very long to live. His poetry remains some of the densest prose ever penned
because, like his brief existence, he had to condense so much life into so little space. The thought of
impending death would be enough to make anyone fall into hopeless despair but Keats s incredible
talents and commitment to live in the moment perhaps allowed him to three lifetimes. The Chimney
Sweeper is a quintessential Blake poem as it embodies his belief in looking towards the future for
hope and comfort. Additionally, the poem is a perfect example of a child s movement from innocence

The Effect Of Blast Loads On Buildings
Abstract
The increase in the number of terrorist attacks especially in the last few years has shown that the effect
of blast loads on buildings is a serious matter that should be taken into consideration in the design
process. Although these kinds of attacks are exceptional cases, man made disasters; blast loads are in
fact dynamic loads that need to be carefully calculated just like earthquake and wind loads. The use of
bombs to attack the cities by terrorist organizations around the world. A bomb explosion within or
immediately nearby a building can cause catastrophic damage on the building s external and internal
structural frames, collapsing of walls, blowing out of large expanses of windows, and shutting down
of critical life safety systems. Loss of life and injuries to occupants can result from many causes,
including direct blast effects, structural collapse, debris impact, fire, and smoke. The indirect effects
can combine to inhibit or prevent timely evacuation, thereby contributing to additional casualties. Due
to the threat from such extreme loading conditions, efforts have been made during the past decades to
develop methods of structural analysis and design to resist blast loads. The analysis and design of
structures subjected to blast loads require a detailed understanding of blast phenomena and the
dynamic response of various structural elements.

  • 2. Examples Of Westernization Of Asia Dannielle Vogel Professor Scott James History 101 Microtheme #2 The Westernization of Asia The mid to late 1800s was a time of intensive change for many on the Asian continent. It was a time for innovation and modernization in which some embraced, while others fought to halt progress and maintain tradition. Japan was the most positively affected by westernization as a country, and they utilized it in ways to benefit their country and still maintain their independence and identity. China and Korea were bystanders to the change, they did not welcome westernization or foreign influences, and according to Fukuzawa Yukichi, they did ...not know how to progress either personally or as a nation, (Yukichi, 1885). In his article Good bye Asia, Yukichi speaks of Japan s embrace of westernization as a commodity, he is an enthusiastic advocate for the convenience awarded by modern transportation and the necessary changes to Japan s government system. Japan was among the first Asian civilizations to embrace innovation with open arms. Though their respect for traditions did not waiver, they were (minus the ruling caste) open to change and advancements in technology. Asian cultures have, for the entirety of history, had more advancements in technology and have placed a higher value on education than almost any other culture around the world. It is no surprise that when the Japanese found out about the railroad system, that they would want to construct their own railways to enhance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Civil Society And Its Prospects For A Democratic Transition Civil Society in Cuba and Its Prospects for a Democratic Transition 4/23/12 Although evidence has shown that civil society is developing in Cuba, the country will probably not undergo a democratic transition in the near future. Civil society is still repressed by the government, independent media is mostly silenced, and many of Cuba s citizens appear understandably apathetic. Cuba will only transition to democracy, develop a democratic political culture, and consolidate its democracy only when civil society develops to a position of organization, strength, and mass support. This essay seeks to analyze the major impediments in Cuba s prospects for democracy. Political History Cuba was one of the last Latin American nations to gain independence. The island won its independence from Spain in 1898, but was taken over by the United States after its victory in the Spanish American War. In 1902, Cuba won its independence from the United States. In 1940, Batista was elected president but was voted out of office in 1944. From 1944 until 1952, the country was ruled by civilian presidents who had the support of political parties. In 1952, Batista orchestrated a coup after being out of office for eight years and presided over a seven year military dictatorship. Batista s anti communism won him the support of the United States, but his administration was extremely corrupt and his closeness with the United States angered many Cubans. In addition, under Batista ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Dying Industry of Brick Production in Norway A condensed history about the production of Tegle stein in Norway. From the first introduction of fired clay bricks by monks in the early twelfth century. To what affects the Black Death had on production and innovation leading into the 17th century. The 1850 s became the golden time for brick production in Norway with new innovations and technics brought in from Germany. As with all golden times there always is a down turn. The end of the Second World War signaled the start of this down turn, with a slow attrition of the brickworks one by one over 90% were closed by 1970. The competition of cement, wood and other building products gave way to only one factory surviving and producing bricks and specialty products of Tegle in Norway today. Introduction Norwegian brick manufacturing and related history should pay homage to the thousands of years of brick building and production from China to the Middle East, eventually these technics arrived and spread throughout Europe. Some of the oldest known Tegleproduction brick production was found in I Tell Aswad, Syria where archeologists found brick rubble from around 7500 B.C, and in Jericho, north of the Dead Sea where foundations and ruins of a house from around the same time made of fired clay. Later the Egyptians and Romans became great users of brick in all aspects of building construction. • 6. The Definition Of Time If people were to hear the number 3,600, some would note that it is large, while others would say the number is small. It is all comparative; it depends on the person, depends on the number, depends on the unit that number is in. In tangible objects, 3,600 lightbulbs is enough to light the homes in a neighborhood, and many would agree that it is large. In grains of sand, it s not even enough to form a zen garden. But 3,600 represents the number of seconds in an hour, a time frame in which people can take as a short or long amount of time. Isn t it fascinating how a number as large as 3,600 can be synonymous with a number as small as one? One hour; thirty six thousand seconds. When those X s fill a page on the calendar, a month has gone by and before you know it, the year has passed. Perhaps this is why calendars are always adorned with beautiful photography or adorable photos of puppies; to soften the blow and distract from the idea that life is passing by. It seems so strange that days are constantly passing and with the celebration of every birthday, we are truly celebrating another year closer to the eminent end of our lives. With that idea looming on the mind, I wonder, why do humans let something as artificial as time hold them back and control their whole life? Humans created time. They transformed the concept of the Earth orbiting the Sun into a tangible tick on a clock. It is possible to physically watch time pass down to the second: to watch the seconds of our lives fleeting. Time is merely a concept that has become a do all end all. If we know that life could simply end at any minute, why is it that we are always waiting for the right moment ? People miss so many opportunities waiting for the right moments . They wait for a certain feeling, like the earth will somehow send them a sign telling them to take a chance. Opportunities cannot just spell themselves out. • 7. Descriptive Essay On Dance Bryan is a free spirit type‒all smiles and full of life. Despite his teaching position, he was one of the youngest of the guys there at 21 years old. Having danced for nearly 6 years and teaching for 3, he has found his place in dance more than anywhere else. It s a really great outlet for self expression, and its something you can do when you grow older, he laughed. I just love the stylization and personality you can infuse into your dancing. Chairs lining the entryway were quickly filled with personal belongings. Although it served as an informal changing area, the most well prepared students came already dressed with the necessary dance items in their bags. The dark colored outfits were especially important. Not only did the class looked unified, but it also gave each student an expressive and distinguishable style. Despite the routine of bringing these items, sweat towels, yoga mats, and other items were available for the students to borrow from if they forgot their own. One student, in particular, Anna, seemed to struggle with the simple weekly ritual of remembering her belongings. As the students unrolled their yoga mats on the dance floor, Anna ran off to the bathroom to change and scoured the designated lockbox in search of a mat she liked. Although Anna did not comply with the standard behavior of the subculture, Bryan did not expect all of the students to be equally familiar with the pre class routine. Anna was obviously the most recent addition to the class, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Realistic Vs Romantic Love In A Midsummer Night’S Dream. Realistic vs Romantic Love in A Midsummer Night s Dream William Shakespeare s writing has stayed very applicable through the years. It was applicable to the times when he wrote his works and is applicable today in similar and different ways. A key theme throughout Shakespeare s work is love, one of the most fundamental human experiences and emotions. Throughout A Midsummer Night s Dream, the theme of love is built up and dissected. The characters are passionate about love from the beginning. The main conflict originates from love itself. Shakespeare builds up the idea of love and then begins to challenge our interpretation of love. He focuses on juxtaposing the romantic idea of love with the more realist nature of love. This comparison of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, when thinking about the period that the play was written and even more where it was set love seems to fade into actuality of the situation. Fathers could determine who their daughters ended up with. The fact that a couple would run away to an area that laws did not apply in just to get married was just something that people would have thought about not actually done. The fact that Shakespeare would even put it on written page and have it performed shows that he at least thought that love is at least a partially romantic ideal. It is later in the play that he begins to question that with how the characters end up that eventually creates his full interpretation of love as an ideal. Throughout the play Shakespeare makes cynical comments about love and the feeling that people express towards one another. This is also meant to contrast with the romantic view of love. Lord, what fools these mortals be! (3.2.115) Robin explains as he questions the actions of the esteemed and troubled couples. In the play this is the point where Oberon is using the love potion to get certain couples to fall in love with one another. This act impedes the natural progression of love. This intervention is used by Shakespeare to focus on the infallibility and cynicism of love. Oberon is not using this potion for love s sake. It is for his own personal agenda and amusement. Being able to alter and fiddle with love in this matter reveals the cynicism of love: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reid explains and covers multiple ideas, issues, subjects, and solutions pertaining to missional student ministry. Throughout reading the book it is evident that Reid is not only extremely passionate about the missional aspect of the student ministry, but also the reasoning behind this aspect. Reid s chapters recognize the issues that many student ministries deal with and how the ministry can go from just an event to a mission ministry. Throughout this book review I will summarize the content and highlight the key components that Reid speaks about. He also claims, This book is not intended to focus on what is wrong in student ministry, however, but to offer a new (or renewed) way of thinking (Reid 18). Here Reid clearly states what the purpose of this book is and not to necessarily fix the ministry, but rather enhance it and provide a new way of thinking about missions. Reid then goes on throughout chapter one to explain in detail the purposes in missional ministry and why. In this section Reid explains that the students today as a generation are leaning toward challenges and making a difference. He even goes as far as defining this word, Missional: to see the world with the eyes of a missionary, to think like a missionary and to relate to others as a missionary with a message of the gospel. In short, life is ministry. Make disciples as you go (Reid 27). Reid goes on explaining the missional shift that has happened in the western church and how this can impact the student ministry as a whole. This idea of missional ministry in the student ministry is simply not in perspective and Reid covers this. He goes throughout many chapters explaining how the bar has been set too low and why this missional aspect is not being brought up in student ministry. Reid then centers in on the gospel in chapter two and what this means as it impacts the missional ministry. The main point of this is so that one understands that the reasoning of the gospel is not solely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Context and Rational Regulations in today s joinery design can affect how some aspects of joinery cannot be exactly reproduced. The main area in joinery were this is relevant is in stair design because for example older stair designs would have had bigger risers which does not comply with modern regulations. This can take from the original look of the stairs but to comply with regulations stairs are reproduced in measurements that comply with regulations. So essentially the reasons for regulations on stair design is due to that they have a everyday practical use and need to be safe as a lot of accidents in the home are from falling down stairs. • 11. Symbolism In Dead Poets Society Dead Poets Society is a classic film from 1989 featuring Robin Williams, which takes place during the 50 s at a traditionalist boarding school for the rich with extremely strict customs and a straightforward message: Tradition, Honor, Discipline and Excellence are all keys to academic success. Within the film, elements such as character development, conflict, setting and symbolism together with a variety of techniques are used to support the prevalent theme: Tradition can restrict individuality leading to progressive thoughts. Mr. Nolan, the headmaster of Welton, is a strict individual who is shown throughout the movie to have an extremely conservative viewpoint aiming to engrave the 4 pillars of education into the minds of his pupils. As Nolan s character is developed, his ultimate goal of restricting the individuality of the students and preserving the social customs of the academy become increasingly apparent through his dialogue. At first Mr. Nolan appears to demonstrate the traditionalist views of the academy through his inauguration speech in order to please the parents that have spent their money on sending their children to an elite boarding school. However as the film continues it becomes apparent that Nolan takes the customs and high standards of the school extremely seriously, as evidenced by his increasingly bitter punishments for those that do not conform to his ideals. • 13. The Idiot Book Analysis Kurosawa s three hour adaptation of The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a complicated four part novel, had to cut out, simplify, and change the original work in order to adapt it to film. However, looking at the specific changes Kurosawa made, specifically towards the end of his film, it is clear that the changes he made weren t merely for the sake of time. Although Kurosawa s modifications might seem random, changes like the bedroom being hot in the book as compared to cold in the movie, eliminating the wedding scene entirely, and most tellingly having Ayako call herself an idiot with the last words of the movie dramatically narrow the argument in the story of The Idiot. While one of the central themes of the original novel was the main character s, Myshkin, Russian Orthodox Christianity, Kurosawa cut it out entirely and instead moved the focus of his movie onto the definition of idiocy. Taken at first glance, the ending to the novel seems more suspenseful, but when examined closer the movie is just as thrilling as the novel. As Myshkin and Rogozhin lie in bedroom beside Nastasya s corpse, the room is sweltering. This clearly uncomfortable situation parallels the unsettling feeling that Dostoevsky desires readers to have with Myshkin comforting Rogozhin. Although this course of action is the natural conclusion to Myshkin s professed Christianity, readers are more likely to extend Nastasya pity and compassion, and refrain from giving it to her murderer. The understanding of belonging is not a concrete block, but a dynamic plain fertilised by interaction with an individual s context. This allows equilibrium to form between beliefs of identity, and uncovering the true meaning of belonging. Both nineteenth century poet Emily Dickinson and Modernist author Margery Williams explore this complex state of acceptance through their works, The Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson and The Velveteen Rabbit . Paradox in What mystery pervades a well , and mechanical metaphor in the microcosmic short story detail that differentiating truth and imagination is integral to cultivate an understanding of belonging. Stichomythia in The Velveteen Rabbit , and economic discourse in I had been hungry all the years depict that acceptance can only be achieved through overcoming the struggle between yearning to belong and facing societal barriers. Finally, it is discovered that personal notions of identity are formed through experiences in the larger world, which creates a cemented understanding of belonging. This is portrayed through an extended weather metaphor by Margery Williams and inclusive language in I died for beauty . Together, the composers create texts which bring the audience on a journey of acceptance and identity, in turn enriching their understandings of belonging. These include visual characters (as observed in movies, plays, etc) and animated characters (such as cartoons and comics). On the other hand, fictional characters are described using words as a medium, and coupled with the reader s imagination, they form a picture in the mind. Since pictorial representations are more relatable and easier to commit to memory, graphic characters are easily accorded protection under Copyright Law. However, it should be kept in mind that although the Copyright Act defines artistic work , such work is inclusive of drawings, paintings and sculptures, not characters . For instance, copyright law may enable an artist to protect a sketch of Mickey Mouse under the category of artistic work, however, the character of Mickey Mouse is derived by the reader from the various episodes or comics it is found in, and therefore doesn t fall under the ambit of artistic work. Further, the book or movie the character appears in may be copyrighted as a whole (as a literary or cinematographic work), but that doesn t prevent reproduction of the character. However, it has been observed that the courts have exercised leniency in granting protection to graphic characters with visual representations that are easily identifiable. Rodney King was an African American motorist who inspired positive police reforms after he had a brutal conflict and was beaten by four members LAPD. Rodney King s encounter resulted in a social and legal compromise because the incident made people aware of the police brutality, gave African Americans a voice against police abuse, and resulted in reforms to the way that the LAPD responded to the communities of color. The Los Angeles Riots were the second Riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30,1992, writers Richard A. Serrano and Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying hours after the verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched, buildings, looted stores and assaulted passerby as a civic leader pleaded for calm. (Serrano and Wilkinson 1) The riots started after the verdict was given, people were filled with anger after the police were all acquitted of all charges. Secondly, The riots helped bring a change to the African Americans because before the riots they didn t have a voice, any protest or march they did didn t receive attention. The Himalayas As A Barrier For The World One Better Village to Live for All of Us Some historians believe that the Himalayas acted as a barrier for the last five thousand years, separating civilized development in China from the rest of the world. (China kept much to herself until about two hundred years ago. Then the British, using gunpowder invented by the Chinese, forced the door to China wide open to the West, starting the most humiliating chapter in Chinese history and the interactions with the rest of the world). Developments in China and the West progressed at a similar pace, despite their engaging in little intellectual communications. Great thinkers emerged in both parts of the world about 2500 years ago, paving the way for their respective civilizations to develop culturally and intellectually, albeit taking completely different approaches. Confucius (born 551 BC) is the most influential figure in the Chinese history. His thoughts and those of his followers laid the foundation, the foundation is Confucian ethics described by Fung Yu Lan in A History of Chinese Philosophy. This is fundamentally different from the major civilizations in other parts of the world, where traditional religions have played more dominant roles in the course of development. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future, quoted by John F. Kennedy at the Loyola college alumni banquet. E.J. Dionne is a political journalist and commentator for The Washington Post also a University Professor in the Foundations of Democracy and Culture at the McCourt School of Public Policy. In Dionne s book, Our Divided Political Heart, he talks about how American citizens cannot agree on who we are because we cannot agree on whom we have been. The American custom, Dionne expresses, points not to be self sufficient and selfish, but to even out our compassion of individual freedom and our loyalty to the public. Understanding of our nation s history, Dionne shows an insightful examination of how self reliance is toxic to our present political ambience. He participates the Tea Party s involvement with American history, but also shows it s catastrophic past while supporting the Wall Street movement in America s public and Populist traditions. Dionne asserts that the American past has continuously been described by friction between the basic morals of individualism and community. Americans have treasured liberty, independent opportunity and self individualism and still maintaining the significance of the general public s duty and civic morality. The founders indicate these morals as liberalism and republicanism, and the attempt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my opinion, the movie did a great job as far as casting. The actors in the movie understood their roles and played it well although there were some moments that could have been done differently. In my opinion, there were some parts in the film that could have been dramatize and much more intense because the situation and seriousness of what was occurring called for it. To begin, the casting of the film was well thought out. The characters played their parts well especially the main characters Stephen Glass played by Hayden Christensen, Chuck Lane played by Peter Sarsgaard, and Caitlin Avey played by Chloe Sevigny. In this particular scene, I felt like Chuck should have been livid. Nevertheless, chuck did seem angry but not to the extreme. Another scene that could have been exaggerated a bit more was when Chuck started to take down all of the stories Glass wrote. At this point in the film, Chuck began to realize the abundance of lies that was printed and published. More and more applications that were used in the PC and laptop began to be used with the mobile. It was with the availability of internet with the mobile that made companies like Nokia look for platforms to deliver the service including surfing and connecting to social media that prompted developers to begin developing programs for this segment. It was also this development that made Microsoft consider going into the mobile sector since the company had already established itself in the tablet segment. General Communication Skills General communication skills are a way of expression or exchanging ideas and thoughts between people. We can use the different techniques of communication skills such as cultural differences, adapting to audience, format of the language, accuracy of the related topic, engaging an audience and be aware of the time zone. All these skills should be properly used between each others. Cultural differences It is known that cultural differences exist between people with different national traditions, languages and religions. People may behave according to their own beliefs and this may look unusual. People may misunderstand each other. For example Scottish and English have different accents. The words are pronounced with a different dialect. Other countries may have to use different meanings of the same hand gestures during the presentation. A Research Study On Pet Scans Neuroscience has evolved in the last 20 years due to the development of new machines and techniques which can measure the structure and the activity of the brain itself. This has allowed cognitive neuroscientists to conduct more in depth research of the function of the brain. One method used by neuroscientist s is Position Emission Tomography (PET). A PET scan measures the blood flow, brain metabolism and glucose intake. During the procedure, the patient is given a harmless dose of a radioactive substance, which is most likely 2 deoxyglucose (2 DG) which is taken up by cells and accumulates in active neurons (Pinel, 2011). This limits cognitive neuroscientists in PET research as due to its invasive nature, they won t be able to investigate the early development of brain function using this technique (Martin, 2013). Another technique adopted by neuroscientists is the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI unlike PET measures the brain structure rather than the activity. It is measured by the waves emitted from hydrogen atoms which are activated by the radio waves from the magnetic field that is passed over the head during the procedure (Pinel, 2011). This is detected by the scanner and is then altered into a structural image. MRI is a much more detailed scan compared to for example, CT scans, as they provide clearer images of the brain which makes it easier for neuroscientists to identify any abnormalities in brain structure. Furthermore, the technique has relatively high spatial resolution and it can produce images in three dimensions which can give a more advanced view into the brain (Martin, 2005). Moreover, MRI has led to the discovery of a number of brain abnormalities in schizophrenia. For example, an MRI study found that compared to healthy subjects, schizophrenic patients showed smaller volumes of grey matter in the temporal lobe and smaller volumes of white matter in the frontal lobe. Schizophrenic patients also had a higher volume of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Model And Assumptions Of The Royle Nichols Model Model and Assumptions The Royle Nichols model allows estimation of abundance from multiple observations of present absent animals without specifically marking the animal. This model represents the spatial distribution of the species observed. Several assumptions are made but two of them are fundamental for this model. First one is that the spatial distribution of the animals across survey sites follows Poisson distribution, and second is the probability of detecting an animal at a site is a function of how many animals are actually at that site. The Poisson distribution represents the mechanism of spatial distribution which is simply how many animals occur at each site within the study area. This model assumes that each site is home to a certain number of species and this number does not change overtime, which means no deaths, births, immigration or emigration of the observed species. The Poisson distribution has as the mean parameter λ ( lambda ) which is the mean abundance across the observed sites. The probability density formula of for Poisson distribution is F(x)= (e^ λ)* (λ^x)/ x! Where x is the number of animals at a given site and F(x) is the generic term of any probability distribution. Given this information we can find the probability that a specific number of animals occupy a given site. The graph for this formula takes different shapes. For example, if we calculate this function for λ=3 and x=5 animals, the result is a probability of 0.10. The graph ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some decry the downfall of the vinyl record, falling compact disc sales, the cheapening and degrading of an art form. I ll try to stay away from unverifiable judgements about the direction modern culture is moving in. More interesting is the way musical creation is changing as a result of new technologies, whether we like it or not. What comes to mind is hyperreality what Jean Baudrillard called the generation by models of a real without origin or reality (166). Digital representations, originally intended to recreate the original sound waves of the music, are losing their point of origin and becoming musical works on their own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its pointless to look for the original blueprint of a digital representation, because it s independent of the hardware it s stored in, and meaningful only in the information it encodes. Hyperreality results from a loss of distinction between the representations and the things they re intended to represent. In our culture, the separation between a song and the digital file of a song is becoming trivial. Computers allow information to be torn free of its original context, and reinterpreted upon retrieval. Representation engines are the ideal enablers of hyperreality, giving almost limitless power to reorder simulacra upon simulacra. The internet takes the representational capacities of computers, and spreads them over a vast symbolic network. Anyone with an internet connection instantly gains manipulative control over a whole world of digital abstractions. These have the unique property of not being tied down to any specific physical origin. It follows that they re infinitely recreatable, and intimately tied to their user defined context. This decontextualization began, to a lesser extent, with the advent of audio cassettes, allowing the creation of mix tapes. A mix tape lets the listener take small parts (usually whole songs) from different physical source material (records), and combine them into a new whole, consisting of copied parts. In Texas, this is done by submitting an application for probate with the probate court. The person filing the application can be a spouse, a child, a parent, or any other person named in the will. • 44. Why Math Is Important For Teaching Mathematics And How... Math Philosophy Paper Math is developing concepts or standards that s important for teaching mathematics to students from Pre K to high school. In our changing world, those who understand and can do mathematics will have significant opportunities and options for shaping their future. (NCTM 2000, p.50). The two important tools to be an effective teacher is knowledge of mathematics and how students learn mathematics. The purposes of math education effect our life since the time we were able to walk. We were taught how to count on our fingers to being able to write our numbers to ten. Then as we got older, concepts were more challenging and involved critical thinking to solve the problems. In society today, math is being utilized in simple to complex avenues such as grocery shopping, measuring, budgeting, investments, architecture, science and technology to name a few. If we take a look around our environment signs, buildings, bridges, streets and just the different patterns and shapes all relate back to mathematics. My role as a math teacher in the classroom would be creating an inviting math environment for my students, being able to explain math to all my students in ways that they understand and model math in an effective way. I want to be a leader, share my knowledge, engage and challenge my students, support them, respect them, be positive and keep them interested in math. The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, The best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it. (Brooks) Though strict coaching can turn some young children and their parents away from sports, it can give kids a good role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with other people. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article Organized Sports Can Benefit Children , says Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today. (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that kids should admire, love, and respect even though they are outside of their family; this will prepare children for their future of dealing with ... Ground should be 60% free of slash, which stimulates germination, in order to control AIP s. Regardless of where each poet looks for their inspiration they are all looking for the same thing; timeless innocence. Even from a young age Keats felt his life would be a short one and he so he applied himself to his art with a desperate urgency . Keats died at twenty six years old and managed to leave behind some of the greatest poetry ever written. He didn t bother to look toward the future because he knew that he wouldn t live to see it and he didn t look to the past because he decided that it was more important to live in the moment. Keats was very aware of his own mortality and his poetry reflected the intensity and the passion of a man who didn t have very long to live. His poetry remains some of the densest prose ever penned because, like his brief existence, he had to condense so much life into so little space. The thought of impending death would be enough to make anyone fall into hopeless despair but Keats s incredible talents and commitment to live in the moment perhaps allowed him to three lifetimes. The Effect Of Blast Loads On Buildings Abstract The increase in the number of terrorist attacks especially in the last few years has shown that the effect of blast loads on buildings is a serious matter that should be taken into consideration in the design process. Although these kinds of attacks are exceptional cases, man made disasters; blast loads are in fact dynamic loads that need to be carefully calculated just like earthquake and wind loads. The use of bombs to attack the cities by terrorist organizations around the world. A bomb explosion within or immediately nearby a building can cause catastrophic damage on the building s external and internal structural frames, collapsing of walls, blowing out of large expanses of windows, and shutting down of critical life safety systems. Loss of life and injuries to occupants can result from many causes, including direct blast effects, structural collapse, debris impact, fire, and smoke. The indirect effects can combine to inhibit or prevent timely evacuation, thereby contributing to additional casualties. Due to the threat from such extreme loading conditions, efforts have been made during the past decades to develop methods of structural analysis and design to resist blast loads.
