Magical Realism And Gothic Style
Magical Realism and Gothic style writings may seem very alike, but at the same time, they are
different. Gothic style invokes a very dark, scary, and irrational feeling, even though the
explanation is completely natural. Magical Realism like the piece House Taken Over , makes
things seems normal but has events that seem almost unexplainable. In Gothic style writings like
The Fall of The House of Usher, things seem unreasonable, but in Magical Realism things feel
ordinary. Both types of writing will provide an uneasy feeling. For instance, in The Fall of The
House of Usher, the very first sentence of this piece of writing gives off a glum and dreary feeling.
During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the

Global Wine War 2009-New World Versus Old
Introduction In the 1960s, 1970s or even 1980s, if you ask someone, which countries produce the
best wine in the world? They would have said France, Italy or Spain. However, if you ask someone
the same question nowadays, the answer would be different. The new wine industry players such as
Australia, the United States and Chile are changing the global industry structure, leading the global
industry trend, and challenging the traditional winemakers by introducing innovations at every
stage of the value chain. This article analyzed the development of global wine industry from the
old world to the new based on Case 2 1 Global Wine War 2009: New World Versus Old, and gave
some advice to the both sides in the fierce battle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The economic impact of these innovations largely decreased the production costs of the New World
comparing with the Old.
Changed Marketing Model
In addition to the innovations of grape growing and winemaking, New World also innovated in
packaging and marketing.
They developed collapsible plastic bag and replaced cork stoppers with screw caps to reduce
shipping costs, to save storage space and to avoid the defect of corks.
They learned the value of differentiating their products and making them more appealing to palates
unaccustomed to wine. These experiments provided valuable lessons in branding and marketing.
Some experienced marketers such as Coca Cola, NestlГ©, Pillsbury and Seagram entered the wine
industry and left behind the consumer focused attitudes and the sophisticated marketing skills.
The large New World companies typically controlled the full value chain, extracting margins at
every level and retaining bargaining power with increasingly concentrated retailers.
These changes brought more profits, more recognition of consumers, more market share and more
marketing experience to New World companies.
Global Competition between New World and Old With the intensifying competition between New
World and Old, significant changes happened during the last quarter of the 20th century made the
competition increasingly fierce.

Sectional Crisis Of 1860
The secession of the Confederate states can be attributed to the collapse of a longstanding system of
political compromise. The factors responsible for this collapse were not only economic and political
in nature but also societal. The beginning of the sectional crisis can be attributed to the Market
Revolution and reform movements of the early 19th century. These cultural and economic changes
subsequently influenced American politics, as evidenced by landmark events such as the
Compromise of 1850, the acquisition of Mexican territory in 1858, the Wilmot Proviso, and finally
the election of 1860. All of these events can be tied to changes in cultural attitudes throughout the
North and South, which invariably related to the question of slavery.... Show more content on

With the acquisition of Mexican Territory in 1848, the question of slavery entered the American
political spotlight in a way that had been avoided since the Missouri Compromise. This new
territory threatened the precarious balance of political power between Northern free states and
Southern slaveholding states. Finding a solution to this problem placed great stress on preexisting
sectional tensions. One proposal that was widely supported in the North was the Wilmot Proviso,
which called for the total halt of the expansion of slavery. This meant that no new slaveholding
states could be admitted to the Union, tipping the balance of power in favor of the North, which
the South was vehemently opposed to. Although the Proviso was not adopted it resulted in a total
breakdown of the party system along sectional lines and was indicative of an increasing
unwillingness on both sides for the political compromise that had one been the norm as exemplified
by the Missouri Compromise. Northern opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act, which was introduced
by the Compromise of 1850, is further evidence of this growing animosity between the two main
factions of American society. Southerners saw Northern refusal to comply with the Fugitive Slave
Act as an affront to their Constitutionally assured property rights. The final straw as far as the
collapse of political compromise in America was the election of 1860. The result was the election of
Abraham Lincoln, a Northern Republican candidate staunchly opposed to the expansion of slavery.
Lincoln s particular brand of antislavery sentiment appealed to a wide range of Northerners, his
procolonization attitude and emphasis on Constitutional

Quebec Separatist Movement Case Study
In June 24, 1968, the leader of RIN Pierre Bourgault, had called for public protests against Pierre
Trudeau. The RIN was involved in a riot which took place in Montreal streets and park that forced
the suspension of the negotiations. Shortly, when the negotiation was resumed in the August of
1968, the RIN held their early position of making Quebeca unilingual and thus the RIN withdrew
from the negotiation. Meanwhile, the MSA and RN was integrated, Rene Levesque was chosen as
acting president of the organization, and Gilles Gregoire was elected as vice president of the new
organization which later became known as Pati Quebecois. In a short period of time, Rene

The Classic May A Time Of Great Expansion During The...
The Classic Maya was a time of great expansion in the Yucatan peninsula. Socially impactful art,
massive architecture, and thriving complex societies. Across the swath of time that was the
Classic Maya, there were great rulers that defined cities. Pakal in Palenque, Tahn Te K inich in
Acqueteca, several kings in Tikal, and several other cities all possessed great leaders that created
stability. The Terminal Classic period was when most all central power, across the Yucatan, was
disrupted. There were cities that were totally abandoned, cities where people dwelled outside of
but all activity within the city had halted, and a general loss of central power. While it can be

The characteristics that defined the Classic Maya were no longer being pursued. The strong
central governments of the Classic Maya built palaces and monuments. Pakal of Palenque built
a massive palace beginning in 650 AD. Tahn Te K inich of Acqueteca wanted to elevate the
status of Acqueteca, and his model for that was through massive construction and ceremonial
activity. He dedicated large steala which depicted the king as a great warrior. He also
commisioned for a great pyramid to be built. It never was finished, but the point is that he was
very intentional in displaying his power through construction. Acqueteca is a great example of a
city who s central political system was disrupted that led to its eventual abandonment. As said
above, Tahn Te K inich was commissioning many buildings while maintaining a strong
ceremonial center. This all changed when Acqueteca was faced with imminent military attacks.
K inich had to abandon all commissioned work, and begin construction on a series of wall to
protect the city. Because there was such a rush to put up defensive walls, it created great
disruption in the ceremonial and social lives of the people of Acqueteca. The walls were never
fully finished, and through excavations, Acquetca was a place that was hastily left. The palace
was swept clean except relics that were sealed away presumably for hiding purposes. The fate of K
inich is unknown, but it is obvious that he fled. There is no evidence

The Elevator William Sleator
Of all the battles young Martin faces from William Sleator s The Elevator , a reader can grasp
one of the greatest and most important themes to fit this story. When Martin and his dad move
into an apartment, Martin is apprehensive about it because of the fact that the place is old and
practically falling apart. For one, Martin is afraid of elevators, and he has to use an old one
everyday. To top it off, he has to ride the old thing with a mysterious, creepy, fat lady. Once
Martin s situation gets to the point of being unbearable, he confronts his dad telling him about the
creepy lady on the elevator. Martin s dad is the exact opposite of how a father should be. Martin s
dad insults him whenever he looks to him for help. Also, Martin doesn t... Show more content on

However, this fails to account for Martin s dad s and the lady on the elevator s actions because
for one, Martin s dad continuously, non stop insults his own son, making him feel like a
disappointment. If one was to be treated like that by their own father, one would also think that
they would be hurt or affected in some way. Martin is not acting irrational or making a big deal
of his situation, if anything, he reacted normally. Like I said before, in the story after Martin goes
to his dad seeking for help, his dad starts insulting him and calling him names, what does one think
he should do at twelve when you look to your father because you have no mother and all his dad
does is insult him? Therefore Martin is doing well in his situation because he tries not to cry as the
story says, he only cries when his situation is unbearable which is appropriate in this situation.
In conclusion, William Sleator uses many different craft moves to lead to the theme. Sleator uses
thoughtshots, foreshadowing, irony, and tension to lead readers to infer that the theme of the story
is in order to thrive in life, you cannot let other s judgement s change you or the way you think.
Martin learns the hard way because he allows his dad, bullies at school, and the lady on the
elevator affect him, and then ironically his worst fear becomes a

Taking a Closer Look at Prison Gangs
Prison Gangs Ever since the creation of the first prison gang the Gypsy Jokers , gangs in prisons
have been a handful for officials trying to provide safety and security not only for corrections
workers but for inmates as well. Prison gangs have been responsible for carrying out any number of
illicit activites behind bars, these include but may not be limited to: gambling, drugs, protection,
and prostitution (Knox, 2012). Over the years research for prison gangs proves difficult because of
the secretive nature behind these organizations, but there is new evidence being brought to light
that is helping combat these illusive and lucrative criminal organizations. There are currently
150,000 incarcerated gangmembers across the United... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A study done in 1996 on prisoners of the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed inmates for
the first 3 years of their incarceration. This study found that inmates with no gang affiliation were
significantly less likely that those wit either street gang affiliation or prison gang affiliation to have
been guilty of a violent misconduct (Griffin, 2006). Also noted in the Griffon study, inmates
who have a gang affiliation are less likely to participate in needed rehab and vocational programs
that may help them upon release. A big problem with prison gangs is that very little is known
about them, this is because they are very secretive, unlike their counterparts on the streets (Fong,
1991). The reason for this secrecy is so gang members can avoid being persecuted by the prison
administration. Over the years prison officials have come up with different ways to handle
prisoners in gangs, one method is called jacketing. Jacketing is when an inmate recieves a mark
on his record, or his jacket , that marks him as a gang member. From there an inmate can be
moved to a higher security prison or a different housing unit if officials felt it was needed (Hunt,
1993). A problem with jacketing is it can be used by prisoners to get someone moved that they don
t like, by simply going to a supervisor as a confidential informant and pointing someone out as a
gang member. Another popular form of gang control is putting

The Strange Death Of Silas Deane Summary
Studying history can be an active, often arduous process, dependent on making assumptions with
the evidence available and proving those assumptions to be correct or otherwise. But it can also be
an easy task if done incorrectly, one of cutting corners and assuming falsehoods to be true for the
sake of convenience. This is the way that many historians, amateur or professional, approach
history. Not only does this approach exclude any possibility for well constructed conclusions to be
made, it can also leave the populace ignorant of the truth. In The Strange Death of Silas Deane ,
James West Davidson and Mark Hamilton Lytle argue that history is not merely the act of
collecting data rather of making assumptions about the data through the use of countless rhetorical
questions, paragraphorganization, and a sardonic tone.
The Strange Death of Silas Deane retraces the story of Silas Deane, an early American politician,
and the events that led up to his death. The authors begin by revealing the conclusion that most
historians have made about the case: Deane committed suicide. Then, they steadily disprove that
conclusion with a myriad of facts and interpretations. The essay provides a thorough recount of
Deane s life and argues that Silas didn t commit suicide rather, he was murdered. To give weight to
this hypothesis, the authors draw from reserves of knowledge about Deane and his closest friend,
Edward Bancroft. After investigating Bancroft s life and his relationship with

that research to help advance plant regrowth. One representative from the foundation said We are

Jackie Chan, as the real life Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung, stops the British along with their
Chinese cohorts from stealing the artifacts, saving the country s heritage for generations to
come. Despite the fact that Wong Fei Hung is a real person, this sequence of events never
happened. It is no coincidence, however, that the person responsible for stopping the devious
British colonials in the film, as well as many other films that do not feature Jackie Chan, is Fei
Hung. Wong Fei Hung is China s greatest hero, so much so that he is China, and to a lesser
extent he is Hong Kong, representing many of Hong Kong s basic beliefs, such as Confucian
virtue and Cantonese tradition (Fore 124.) Hong Kong cinema has had a longstanding affair
with Wong Fei Hung, with over 100 films about him having been made in the past 50 years (Logan
10.) He represents many Chinese ideals, so his small victory over the British colonials can easily be
read as a Chinese victory over the British. Because of Britain s occupation of Hong Kong at the
time, it is easy to see why Hong Kong citizens would like to see the British be defeated by someone
who holds Chinese beliefs so sacred, and by someone who is held so sacred in Hong Kong.
If Wong Fei Hung represents the best of China, the villains in the film

Trial Lawyer Language
What is language? Over centuries, language and communication have been vital to understanding
past and recent civilizations. Language has formed cultures and steepened traditions within
communities. In the past, researchers have examined the language of drawings used by ancient
civilizations, but in the future, they could be examining one hundred and forty character tweets to
determine what life was like during that time period. With language changing so rapidly, how do
people use it to serve their needs? In the justice system language plays a vital role in how they
achieve their desired results. The use of language is a cardinal and strategic method used heavily
by trial lawyers to obtain and communicate their desired results. Trial... Show more content on

A jury can find your client innocent, or they can find you client guilty which could potentially
cause him or her to lose periods of freedom or money. With so much a stake, a trial lawyer has to
be considerate of how they deliver messages to the jury. In the article The Kettleful of Law In Real
Jury Deliberations: Successes, Failure and Next Steps, researchers Shari Seidman Diamond, Beth
Murphy and Mary R. Rose prove beyond a reasonable doubt that singular importance of
communicating with a jury. After conducting research, the authors found that after a
Close study of fifty deliberations reveals, the failure to actively address the variety of sources
leading to miscomprehension of instructions has consequences: juries may reach decisions that are
inconsistent with the law they are ostensibly being asked to apply. While most verdicts appeared to
be unaffected by problems with the instructions or resistance to a relevant legal principle, the juries
in several instances awarded damages that were to some degree influenced by instruction errors.

Dance Music and Moral Panic

Rietveld suggest that; The British Culture has a long history in regulating pleasures associated
with parties. A fear seems to exist of the unregulated body that dances and is intoxicated...It is
therefore not surprising that the acid house parties; that heady mix of house n E events in 1998,

Crass also joined the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in order to work alongside
while doing gigs and raising awareness of socio political issues. It could be theorised that many
other bands such as Conflict and Flux of Pink Indians also adopted the anarcho punk style as part
of their ideology recognising it as a socio political ideal rather than a means to gain further
popularity. It can be theorised that the intention of anarcho punk is to deteriorate government or
outside oppression. They challenge capitalism suggesting that the economic system itself is
problematic and simply a way of producing profit through social hierarchies. In regards to Cohen s
theoretical assumptions regarding societal panic the aforementioned genre of anrcho punk can be
used as an example of how a misunderstood sub culture within a popular music genre can be
demonised and seen as the cause of the moral and socio political problems within society. During
the emergence of the punk movement those involved in the culture were perceived by the media as
being dangerous and violent thugs who threatened the established moral system within civilized
societies through lyrical content that directly challenged the status quo. This is evident for example

The Death Of A Fountain
It was hot. So hot, that sweat caused clothes clung to all skin it came into contact with. This
sweat was dripping off her as if it was forced water cascading from a small opening at the top of
the head of a statue standing in the center of a fountain. However, it wasn t a statue standing in
the center of a fountain, but a small child on her knees leaning up against a wall. If this was not
the worst bed bell dream a child receive as a gift, then the horror that came next to mind was told
true. There was the taste of blueberries in her mouth that did nothing to help with the discomfort
and had only added more sorrow to what she was now experiencing. Wherever this hot dark
place was and where the tang of blueberry in her mouth came from, only the gods knew and she
was too young to be recognized by them as one of their servants to ask those questions. This only
added to the enormous mountain of confusion her mind was unsuccessfully trying to sort out. The
last thing she remembered was of a wonderful bed bell dream gift, but it had suddenly turned dark
and scary. Her mother and father both had tears in their eyes and her father more so of the two. She
was chosen to go on a very important adventure, but she had to do so without him. Just the thought
of doing something this important without her father felt terribly wrong. She could not remember a
moment when she did not have her father near. It mattered little if it was to break their fast at dawn,

Tragic Events That Occur In Romeo And Juliet Essay
The tragic events that took place in Romeo and Juliet could be considered the result of Romeo s
poor decisions. Many tragic events take place over the course of the play Romeo and Juliet by
William Shakespeare. The events are the result of some poor decision making and acting on
impulses that ultimately brought grief upon both houses of Capulet and Montague. Romeo is the
character most to blame for the tragic events in Romeo and Juliet because he killed Tybalt, he
killed Paris, and he bought the poison and left his dagger; killing himself and Juliet. Romeo is the

American Phytopathological Society. Coffee rust. Updated 2011. Apsnet.org. Accessed April 12,
2017. http://www.apsnet.org/edcenter/intropp/lessons/fungi/basidiomycetes/pages/coffeerust.aspx.
Coupled with imagery, Coffee rust is described through numerous biological factors such as its life
cycle, and its survival rate in Coffea arabica, and Coffea canephora (Arabica Coffee and robusta
coffee). The article discusses a quick overview of coffee s popularity and previous names for
coffee rust, dating as far back as the 1860s. An analysis of the pathogen s biology is covered,
discussing how the infection begins and how it reduces the survivability of the plant. Germination
is the real threat since this fungus can quickly spread in 24 48 hour, especially in wet and humid
weather. On top of that, another fungus, known as Verticillium hemileiae, can come along and
colonize the coffee rust lesions. But even then, it doesn t help the plant survive.
Fungi are fascinating, yet terrifying organisms. The text does a good job of describing how they
operate (through spores) and long does it affect the plant in the short term (rust that causes the ...

Let the Right One in Analysis Essay
BONDING THROUGH EXILE:
An Analysis of Mise en ScГЁne in Let the Right One In
The theme of loneliness and isolation has been predominant in cinema since its inception, but
Tomas Alfredson explores the idea in a unique way in his 2008 Swedish romantic horror film, Let
the Right One In. Set in the snowy winter of Stockholm, the film depicts the similarly cold and
depressing life of Oskar, a young target of bullying. This frozen, barren setting contributes to the
complete isolation that the viewer feels with the characters. Through strategic shot composition and
specific color and mood choices, Alfredson shows how both Oskar and Eli are cut off from the
world in different ways, and then how their common bloodlust brings them together. ... Show more

The camera slowly pans around the playground, showing the bland walls of the apartment complex
surrounding it to amplify their sense of overwhelming loneliness. Oskar, wanting to find a
companion in Eli, provides her with his rubik s cube to solve. The rubik s cube can also be seen
as Eli providing an answer to Oskar s problems. Both his life and his rubik s cube are puzzles that
need solving, and Eli literally drops in to solve everything for him. This early scene sets the tone
for the rest of the movie and establishes both the characters as lonely outcasts that need to be saved.
As the relationship between Oskar and Eli continues to blossom, Oskar finds out that Eli lives

Oskar attempts to let her in by motioning and gesturing but she refuses to cross the threshold. She
finally enters without his permission, causing her to bleed from every opening on her face,
turning her into a grotesque image of her true vampiric form. This causes Oskar to give her

The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Analysis
Life is difficult because no one can be sure if the choice they make will actually lead the
outcome they wished for. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, one of the most recognizable
poems in American literature, speaks to choices people face in their life. The speaker has to
make a right choice for him, that will lead to the outcome of being what he really wants to be.
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost uses symbolism, imagery, personification, and metaphor, to
explain its theme that choices made by the one s strong wish of what one really wants to be, will
ultimately lead to the desired outcome. The poem uses symbols to indicate the choices that the
speaker faces in life. The two diverged road symbolize the two significant choices that diverge
the future of speaker s life. The fork in the road indicates the point in the speaker s life where he
can go no farther without making a decision that takes him down one path and does not allow
him to take the other. The yellow wood (1) indicates fall when the leaves turn yellow in the
forest. Fall is a symbol of the waning years of speaker s life, meaning that the speaker is past his
youth when he can make a choice with the confidence that it is correctable at a later time.
Therefore, the choice that he will make is permanent and highly impacts the rest of his life.
Imagery and personification are used to describe contradiction in the process of making a
decision between the two paths. Since he cannot take both roads, the speaker looks down the
road but cannot see beyond the undergrowth, which expresses the fact that no one knows what
the future will bring. Much of the imagery in the poem is visual to describe the path to show the
speaker s indecisiveness of choosing a certain path. He wants to choose the path that is less
traveled so he chooses the path that is having perhaps the better claim (7), which is the path that is
grassy and wanted wear (8), a personification to describe that road is not stepped by other people.
However, he realizes that there is no appreciable difference between the two paths because both that
morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. (11,12) The contradiction with the serious
tone shows perplexity that the

The Synthesis And Fabrication Of Conductive Polymers Essay
Abstract
Conductive polymers have promising applications in the field of tissue engineering as tissue
scaffolds. Many tissue types respond favorably to electrical stimulation, because of this conductive
polymers can be used for the regeneration of damaged tissue. This review will focus on the
synthesis and fabrication of conductive polymers as well as their applications in tissue engineering.
Introduction
All cells exhibit some form of electrical excitability, from voltage gated ion channels to muscle
contractions and heart beats electromagnetic fields are critical to the basic functions of life. Galvani
famously showed in 1794 that a frog leg will contract when touched with the cut sciatic nerve of the
other leg. This scientific breakthrough led to extensive research of electromagnetism within
organisms. Electromagnetic fields have been found to affect a variety of biological processes
including angiogenesis, cell division, cell signaling, nerve sprouting, prenatal development, and
wound healing [1]. Only in recent decades with the development of molecular and cellular
technology has the link between cell biology and bioelectricity been discovered [2]. This growth in
understanding has led to the development of a variety of electrically conductive devices for uses in
biomedical engineering. Devices that use electrical stimulation that have already been approved by
the FDA include the pacemaker, deep brain stimulators and vagal nerve stimulators [1].

simply states her point and moves on, only providing vague support to enhance her argument. To
improve her arguments, it would be beneficial to see timeline examples from how long it took

increase the strength of her argument, the inclusion of a professional opinion from a developer

regulations. Edwards focuses most her article comparing the introduction of virtual reality to other
media types and their history. By focusing her argument on comparing media types, it seems she
hopes to convince the reader that it is alike any other technology and doesn t differ, thus not
needing further regulation. In doing this, she doesn t leave room for supporting details and specific
examples, leaving her with a rather weak argument . She also includes a paragraph on the liabilities
of new ideas, that seems to distract from her argument. She concludes her argument saying that
virtual reality is protected alike video games under the first amendment of free speech. Again, she is
straying from the point of her argument and filling with unsupported arguments . This is an
irreverent argument because while they are

HTML5 And The Future Of Technical Documentation
HTML5 and the Future of Technical Documentation By: Jessica Morley
May 2015 Introduction: A Crossroad in History
T
echnical writing is at a crossroad in history. Gone are the days when people read technical
documentation from print in manuals, books, inserts, or pamphlets. Likewise, the practice of
reading documentation from a CD Rom or desktop software application is quickly becoming a
thing of the past. Today, if people want technical information, they go straight to their browsers to
find what they re looking for.
With the advent of handheld smart phones, laptops, and tablets, teamed with the ubiquity of reliable
internet connection everywhere, people demand versatile, responsive, and accessible
documentation that can meet their information needs. HTML5, the new HTML standard officially
recommended in October 2014, is the World Wide Web Consortium s (W3C s) answer to this new
age of high speed on demand information, and technical writers are beginning to take notice.
However, the question remains: should technical writers adapt to this new wave of technology, and
if so, to what extent will HTML5 impact the user experience and the technical writing process?
There are a growing number of technical writers who are just shy of entirely enthusiastic for this
brave new world of technology. Peter Lubbers, an experienced technical writer, published author,
and current Senior Program Manager at Google, is one such individual who may tip the scale on
the enthusiasm

Any successful international negotiation for reducing emissions must be based on four principles:

OECD the birth of the polluter pays principle
Some explanation of the sometimes arbitrary course of the principle of polluter pays can be found
in its historical development. The principle first appeared in a legal context in a document prepared
by the international Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD ) and
included the following recommendation: The principle to be used for allocating costs of pollution
prevention and control measures to encourage rational use of scarce environmental resources and to
avoid distortions in international trade and investment is the so called Polluter Pays principle . This
principle means that the polluter should bear the expenses of carrying out the above mentioned
measures decided by public authorities to ensure that the environment is in an acceptable state. In
other words, the cost of these measures should be reflected in the costs of goods and services which
cause pollution in production and/or consumption. Such measures should not be accompanied by
subsidies that would create significant distortions in international trade and investment . In 2001,

Emma Watson vs. Malala Yousafzai

Both of them were very prepared to give the speech, was very clear that they have practice the
speech countless times. I believe that for Malala Yousafzai was more natural since it comes from a
very powerful experience that gave her the strength to fight and be heard. However Emma Watson
also has passion about the subject.
They both Called to Action. Malala Yousafzai started six sentences by saying We Call upon... and
Emma said I am reaching out to you because I need your help...
Malala only looked down to her notes once while delivering her speech, she looked down and
captured a chunk of her next thoughts, paused, looked back up and delivered it. As for Emma
Watson, after her shaken introduction, she proved to be well prepared for the speech. They both
made eye contact with the audience, however Malala Yousafzai was able to make eye contct with
the entire body of the United Nations for the majority of her presentation. She would occasionally
look back to make eye contact with whomever was seating behind her.
They both gave a personal touch by relating their own experiences. Emma Watson experience with

The Shattering of Idealism in Nadine GerfimerВґs The Moment...
Literature changed drastically between the nineteenth century and twentieth and twenty first

war and inequalities grew greater. The writers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries wrote
realistically what was happening in the world. The Moment before the Gun Went Off by Nadine

shattering of Idealism in twentieth and twenty first centuries.

One of the many reasons why patriotism was shattered is because coloialism was creating harsh
tensions. In The Moment before the Gun Went Off they discuss how the killing of the son is going
to turn into an ugly racial debate Bad enough to have killed a man, without helping the Party s, the
government s, the country s enemies (p.1442) The reader can conclude from this quote that
because great Britain colonized in South Africa it caused rifts between many people. People s
patriotism tends to dwell when all they see is conflict around them. The once idealistic views turn
critical when war and inequalities is all there is. The twentieth and twenty first century writers were
common people going through horrific times such as extreme racism.
In The Moment before the Gun Went Off and The Day They Burned the Books both stories leave
the reader thinking. Unlike, the 19th century; modern writers often left the end of the story open

Police Shootings And Police Brutality
The topic that has my interest would be police shooting and how much it has gotten worse over
the years. Thiers a lot of questions asked when it comes to police shootings/police brutality. The
first thing that the media always brings up is did the person deserve to be shot or was the person
shooting at the police, in which case two valid questions but the fact the cops shoot to kill it
appears in many police shooting they will usually shoot at the body of the person, they aren t
likely to shoot at your legs or a place that won t automatically cause death. The reason this is a
concern is because I believe the African Americancommunity is targeted more than any other
ethnic group in America, they are more searched than any other ethnic group it causes fear with
the community and this also makes the police job harder, because now they will be more trigger
happy to shoot someone in a slight move they make. A big media case from last year was shown
an African American man helping his patience that left his care, while this was going on the man
was laying down with his hands up telling the cops I am just trying to help my patience within 2
minutes the policeman shoots at the unarmed man injuring him, but lucky the man survived. The
strange part of this shooting was that the police was 20 foot from the man that they shot, which
also makes you wonder how is it possible that a man can have his arm raised clearly a video of the

The Second Polish Republic
The history of Poland results from the migrations of Slavs who established permanent settlements
on the Polish lands during the Early Middle Ages. In 966 AD, Duke Mieszko I of the Piast dynasty
adopted Western Christianity; in 1025 Mieszko s son BolesЕ‚aw I Chrobry formally established a
medieval kingdom. The period of the Jagiellonian dynasty in the 14th 16th centuries brought close
ties with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a cultural Renaissance in Poland and territorial expansion
that culminated in the establishment of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569.
The Commonwealth in its early phase represented a continuation of Jagiellonian prosperity, with its

Ancient Ireland Research Paper
The first humanoids appeared in Ireland during the 7th millennium BC. They are believed to have
arrived from France and Scandinavia over the open ocean. They settled areas on the North Eastern
coast of Ireland. During the Mesolithic period inhabitants depended mostly on fishing and hunting
and gathering. Curraghs, light weight boats, were used to navigate inland water and coastal fishing.
The only remnants of this culture are the imprints left in pottery, there were no major contributions
to the island itself. During the 4th millennium BC Irelands second major wave of settlement. During

Patrick s Confessio was written circa 440 AD, by St. Patrick. In the Confessio St. Patrick tells
the story to the Irish people of why he came to Ireland. He tell them of the messages sent to him
from God throughout his life that had saved him from slavery during his childhood. He uses the
story of his life to show the Irish why they should turn to Christianity. St. Patrick even explains
the Irish that he is not a perfect person. I know I cannot trust myself as long as I am in this body
subject to death This quote shows that he does not hold him above the Irish people, but as an
equal. He talks about how even though he has sinned God has forgiven him and has even saved
him in times of need. This confession by St Patrick also defends his actions in Ireland. When I
baptised so many thousands of people, did I hope to receive even the smallest payment? If so,
tell me, and I will return it to you This quote tells the Irish that he is not converting them in a
selfish way. He is converting them for their sakes and because he was asked by God himself. In
1171 internal struggle for power caused the Irish to be open to attack from Anglo Welsh warriors.
This is the first time that Ireland had faced an army from outside of it s own borders, which had
this meant that he Irish had not had to keep up with the current military innovations. In October of
1171 King Henry II arrived in Ireland. In 1172 King Henry took Dublin under his protection and
issued the first Charter for his city .

Main Street In Lake Mills Research Paper
Imagine going on a drive with your family on a beautiful evening. You drive through small towns
with magnificent trees, 100 s of years old, lining the streets. If you drove down that road many of
times, you would know that the trees were amazing. Wouldn t it be a shame to drive down that
street again, and those beautiful trees were gone, and a sidewalk there instead? The trees lining
Main Streetin Lake Mills shouldn t be cut down because the road detours will be an inconvenience
to citizens and businesses, the trees give a natural setting in the downtown area, and the estimated
4.8 million dollars being spent on this project could be used for other funding in the city. One

Also, according to the same article, at some points when concrete is being poured, citizens who
are living on Main Street may not be able to access their homes. This will cause an
inconvenience, as most people work during the day, and when they come home from work, they
may not be able to access their homes. Next, also according to the article South Main Street
Reconstruction Still in Planning Stages By Matt Gardner (www.hngnews.com), the planned
detour as of right now is from Interstate 94 to Highway 26, to Highway 18. Another option would
be to go from Main Street to Madison Street, then heading out Lake Street and to Highway Q.
People who lives on Highway Q, Family s are concerned this road will become overly crowded,
which will lead to traffic jams and accidents. In addition, there will be no way around Pinnacle

The average of homeless women is lower than men and most of this is under 25years of age.
Women are more likely to get married and have children and maintained their family contact but
they are likely to have family violence, abusive relationship with their partners. A report shows
that four in ten women are sexually abused (Sweetman 1997). According to (Passaro 2014) there

Literary Criticism In To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate...
Literary criticism is defined as an informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature.
An example of a literary criticism is intertextual criticism, which is a comparison of two literary
works in terms of symbols, themes, characters, and other criteria. In the fictitious novels To Kill a
Mockingbird and A Separate Peace, Harper Lee and John Knowles use intertextual criticism to
allow the reader to associate the novelwith other works and establish connections. Throughout the
stories A Separate Peace and To Kill A Mockingbird
, the stories contain several similarities in
terms of loss of innocence, using a tree as a symbol of friendship, and using the scapegoat
archetype. Loss of innocence was addressed in both novels in similar ways. When Phineas
exhibited confusion at Gene s studying habits, Gene felt like his brain exploded, he minded,
despised the possibility that I might be head of the school (Knowles 45). In both works of
literature, a sudden realization triggered a loss of innocence and change in attitude. In this case,
when Gene found out that Phineas minded that he could be the top of their class, he interpreted
it as Phineas being envious and wanting him to fail. Gene thinking that Phineas wants him to
fail completely changed the dynamic of their relationship and Gene s naive thoughts of him and
Phineas having a healthy friendship. Comparably, when Brinker confronted Phineas and Gene
about the tree incident, the words shocked Phineas into awareness (Knowles 167). When
Phineas realized the true reason behind his injury, Phineas s character, specifically in the way
he acted towards Gene, was affected. Phineas had spent the majority of the novel in denial of
Gene s crimes and when he found out he came to the realization that not everyone was on his
side. With this comes his loss of naivety and his undying love for life were compromised.
Similarly in To Kill A Mockingbird, when Jem found out the true views of Maycomb it was, Jem
s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears...it ain t fair (Lee 243). Similar to the previous
two examples Jem was a young boy who after hearing the verdict of the trial, comes to the
realization of the true working of Maycomb. After seeing

Public Health Issues
Approaching mental health as public health issue is a highly controversial matter, especially when
the public is not educated or already have there own bias towards mental health. I feel that mental
health is a public health issue and a major concern that should be addressed by local and state
officials along with health care professionals and the community in general. Due to the limitations
of mental health facilities and providers, most of these patients require hospitalization due to their
illness, or end up in correctional facilities due to the behaviors related to there mental illness.
Improving access to impatient and outpatient clinics is a concern for most patients who suffer from
mental health issues. Most patients with mental health concerns are unable to keep up with job
demands and tend to have no form of insurance, which leaves them with very limited resources for
help or therapy. I have had the privilege of working with students within an inpatient facility for
adults and children with mental health related disorders and one major concern for these patients
was the stigma that came along with there condition.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the healthcare system we want to treat patients accordingly by promoting optimal goals to

made, they are continuously seen and heard. Due to government mandates there fewer facilities to

with low incomes are substantially more difficult. Due to low income many patients use Medicaid
as their payer source, where most psychiatrists do not take. Another barrier is the limited number of

The Big Thirst By Charles Fishman
In the book The Big Thirst, Charles Fishman addresses the key issues of how water is abused in
areas, like Las Vegas, and the era of easy water is over. Fishman explains where the largest
amount of water is located and water s presence in space. His book is mainly composed of case
studies showing how water in certain areas, like Las Vegas and India, has been dwindling and
the absence of preparation in those places when the water is almost gone. Lastly, he talks about
the misconceptions of tap water and the lack of understanding communities and people in power
have about the future of water. Fishman wants the reader to be crystal clear on how water has
come to this point, the issues of water shortages, and the solutions to water problems. In general,
people think that the largest amount of fresh water is stored in ice caps but this is false. Fishman
explains that most of the water on Earth exists in a fourth form, not ice, liquid, or vapor, but it
exists as molecular water. This abundance of water is locked in the rock of the Earth s mantle,
about 255 miles deep. Unfortunately, this water is almost totally inaccessible to the people on
Earth. Steven Jacobsen, a geophysicist at Northwestern University, explains to Fishman that the
water in the rocks is not like the water that comes out of the tap. Jacobsen says, If you release the
pressure and temperature, the hydrogen and the OH come out as water (Fishman, pg 34). However,
the amount of pressure and technology needed to

Attending The A Homicide Trial
I plan to attend the a homicide trial. I went by myself to Sonoma s Superior Court buildings the
day before and asked a woman working which cases would be good to go to and she
recommended I come in the next day to see a triple homicide trial on Mark Capello. I have never
been to a court proceeding before, so I am not exactly sure what to expect. I am excited at the
prospect of viewing a homicide case. Will it be like the court shows on television? I enjoy
watching dateline, and in that show they actually play clips of real court trials that have occurred.
However, they only show the most interesting parts for television. I expect that this court

There will also be bailiffs near the exits there to keep the peace and ensure safety in the
courthouse. As the trail begins, I imagine that the bailiffs will ask all of us in the courtroom to rise
as the judge and the jury come in. After we sit, I believe that the judge will be announced and a
small introduction will be stated to refresh everyone s memories of what is going on most
recently in the trail. As soon as that is done, I assume that we will dive right into the
proceedings. To be honest, I am not really sure what will happen in the court room. It all depends
on what point in the trial they are at. The defense attorney could be questioning someone. The
prosecutor could be questioning somebody. Somebody could be testifying, whether it be a
witness, an expert, or Mark Capello himself. For all I know, I could possibly see images from
the crime scene. I know that the murders happened in early 2013, so they could be pretty far
along in the trail. I simply plan on being present and trying to take good notes and absorb as much
as I can for the two hours I am there.
Part II At eight in the morning on March 18th, my classmate Hallie and I showed up at the

Autobiography Of My Mother
My mother is mestiza, my father is mestizo, my brother is mestizo, my tias, my tios, as am I. All
mestizos. I ve been told I am worthy of praise because I carry your language on my tongue
without an accent, because I had an American education, because I can recite allegiance to your
country. I am told I am worthy because I could assimilate to the culture, unlike my parents. I am
often presented with shocked faces when I speak my second language, English, faces that
always tell me that they would have never guessed I spoke so perfectly, thinking they d have to
work twice as hard to understand my heavy, foreign accent the same accent my parents have. On
top of that, I am the color of the sun reigning on my skin. I found from my 17 years here, it does
not matter whether you are the color of milk or whether I speak English without an accent, the
moment I speak Spanish and invite someone outside of my culture into my home and they notice

Victor Krempe s Accomplishments
When M. Krempe said this while addressing the gathering of scientists at the university, he was
not praising Victor for his efforts, though it may have seemed as if he was. With his use of
hyperbole, M. Krempe is able to somewhat discredit Victor s achievements, by referring to him
as a youngster rather than an educated adult, for example. Additionally, he attempts to discredit
his hard work and dedication to his education while also undermining his knowledge by bringing
up the timeline of his science education. One of Victor s first goals was to learn as much as he
could about modern science, and he accomplished that goal remarkably fast. He was successful in
his scientific pursuits, and his experimental developments are capable of changing the world. This
was the goal that he had in mind when he began his studies, but now that he has made a discovery
that is capable of changing the world, he has discovered that knowledge comes at a price, and is no
longer in pursuit of the glory that accompanies his discovery. When Victor realized that the

Money Can Buy Happiness. .Most Of Us Are Familiar With
Money Can Buy Happiness Most of us are familiar with the old adage, Money can t buy happiness,
but few question the validity of the statement and its meaning. The debate: Can money buy you
happiness? is a spirited debate that has been argued since currency came about. There are those that
side with the popular saying and argue that money has no relation to an individual s happiness.
Those in support of the expression, money can t buy happiness, state the claim that true happiness
stems from internal feelings of self worth, where meaning in life is naturally created by doing good,
acting justly, and abiding by purity. Those that dispute the saying and believe the opposite have
found a shared commonality in several contributing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If it were true, that there is no link between money and happiness, why have economists studied
this connection for many years? In fact, in just the past 30 years, studies have shown there is
indeed a significant association between money and happiness. Over the course of these studies, it
has been determined that people in rich countries are far happier than people in poor countries
(Maich 1). The relationship between wealth and happiness has even been described to be, more
complicated than the romantic entanglements of any Desperate Housewife (Futrelle 1). It is true
that the connection between happiness and money is intricate, however, the link is measurable.
Based on a study done by the University of Michigan, it was found that, a higher income leads to a
greater sense of well being, which in turn, contributes to an individual s happiness greatly
(Kurtzleben 1). While the opposition argues there is no apparent link between wealth and
happiness, it is clear to see that there is a very real connection between the two. Additionally,
wealth and happiness now appear to be far more dependent on one another than we may have
previously come to terms with.
It is ironic that the opposition, who argue there is no real relationship between wealth and
happiness are the very people arguing that, if there is any link between the two, money only
contributes to temporary happiness. Both of these arguments can be rebutted swiftly. It has already

  • 2. Magical Realism And Gothic Style Magical Realism and Gothic style writings may seem very alike, but at the same time, they are different. Gothic style invokes a very dark, scary, and irrational feeling, even though the explanation is completely natural. Magical Realism like the piece House Taken Over , makes things seems normal but has events that seem almost unexplainable. In Gothic style writings like The Fall of The House of Usher, things seem unreasonable, but in Magical Realism things feel ordinary. Both types of writing will provide an uneasy feeling. For instance, in The Fall of The House of Usher, the very first sentence of this piece of writing gives off a glum and dreary feeling. During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Global Wine War 2009-New World Versus Old Introduction In the 1960s, 1970s or even 1980s, if you ask someone, which countries produce the best wine in the world? They would have said France, Italy or Spain. However, if you ask someone the same question nowadays, the answer would be different. The new wine industry players such as Australia, the United States and Chile are changing the global industry structure, leading the global industry trend, and challenging the traditional winemakers by introducing innovations at every stage of the value chain. This article analyzed the development of global wine industry from the old world to the new based on Case 2 1 Global Wine War 2009: New World Versus Old, and gave some advice to the both sides in the fierce battle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The economic impact of these innovations largely decreased the production costs of the New World comparing with the Old. Changed Marketing Model In addition to the innovations of grape growing and winemaking, New World also innovated in packaging and marketing. They developed collapsible plastic bag and replaced cork stoppers with screw caps to reduce shipping costs, to save storage space and to avoid the defect of corks. They learned the value of differentiating their products and making them more appealing to palates unaccustomed to wine. These experiments provided valuable lessons in branding and marketing. Some experienced marketers such as Coca Cola, NestlГ©, Pillsbury and Seagram entered the wine industry and left behind the consumer focused attitudes and the sophisticated marketing skills. The large New World companies typically controlled the full value chain, extracting margins at every level and retaining bargaining power with increasingly concentrated retailers. These changes brought more profits, more recognition of consumers, more market share and more marketing experience to New World companies. Global Competition between New World and Old With the intensifying competition between New World and Old, significant changes happened during the last quarter of the 20th century made the competition increasingly fierce. • 4. Sectional Crisis Of 1860 The secession of the Confederate states can be attributed to the collapse of a longstanding system of political compromise. The factors responsible for this collapse were not only economic and political in nature but also societal. The beginning of the sectional crisis can be attributed to the Market Revolution and reform movements of the early 19th century. These cultural and economic changes subsequently influenced American politics, as evidenced by landmark events such as the Compromise of 1850, the acquisition of Mexican territory in 1858, the Wilmot Proviso, and finally the election of 1860. All of these events can be tied to changes in cultural attitudes throughout the North and South, which invariably related to the question of slavery.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the acquisition of Mexican Territory in 1848, the question of slavery entered the American political spotlight in a way that had been avoided since the Missouri Compromise. This new territory threatened the precarious balance of political power between Northern free states and Southern slaveholding states. Finding a solution to this problem placed great stress on preexisting sectional tensions. One proposal that was widely supported in the North was the Wilmot Proviso, which called for the total halt of the expansion of slavery. This meant that no new slaveholding states could be admitted to the Union, tipping the balance of power in favor of the North, which the South was vehemently opposed to. Although the Proviso was not adopted it resulted in a total breakdown of the party system along sectional lines and was indicative of an increasing unwillingness on both sides for the political compromise that had one been the norm as exemplified by the Missouri Compromise. Northern opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act, which was introduced by the Compromise of 1850, is further evidence of this growing animosity between the two main factions of American society. Southerners saw Northern refusal to comply with the Fugitive Slave Act as an affront to their Constitutionally assured property rights. The final straw as far as the collapse of political compromise in America was the election of 1860. The result was the election of Abraham Lincoln, a Northern Republican candidate staunchly opposed to the expansion of slavery. Lincoln s particular brand of antislavery sentiment appealed to a wide range of Northerners, his procolonization attitude and emphasis on Constitutional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Classic May A Time Of Great Expansion During The... The Classic Maya was a time of great expansion in the Yucatan peninsula. Socially impactful art, massive architecture, and thriving complex societies. Across the swath of time that was the Classic Maya, there were great rulers that defined cities. Pakal in Palenque, Tahn Te K inich in Acqueteca, several kings in Tikal, and several other cities all possessed great leaders that created stability. The Terminal Classic period was when most all central power, across the Yucatan, was disrupted. There were cities that were totally abandoned, cities where people dwelled outside of but all activity within the city had halted, and a general loss of central power. While it can be puzzling to understand what created the shift, or collapse from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The characteristics that defined the Classic Maya were no longer being pursued. The strong central governments of the Classic Maya built palaces and monuments. Pakal of Palenque built a massive palace beginning in 650 AD. Tahn Te K inich of Acqueteca wanted to elevate the status of Acqueteca, and his model for that was through massive construction and ceremonial activity. He dedicated large steala which depicted the king as a great warrior. He also commisioned for a great pyramid to be built. It never was finished, but the point is that he was very intentional in displaying his power through construction. Acqueteca is a great example of a city who s central political system was disrupted that led to its eventual abandonment. As said above, Tahn Te K inich was commissioning many buildings while maintaining a strong ceremonial center. This all changed when Acqueteca was faced with imminent military attacks. K inich had to abandon all commissioned work, and begin construction on a series of wall to protect the city. Because there was such a rush to put up defensive walls, it created great disruption in the ceremonial and social lives of the people of Acqueteca. The walls were never fully finished, and through excavations, Acquetca was a place that was hastily left. The palace was swept clean except relics that were sealed away presumably for hiding purposes. The fate of K inich is unknown, but it is obvious that he fled. There is no evidence ... • 8. The Elevator William Sleator Of all the battles young Martin faces from William Sleator s The Elevator , a reader can grasp one of the greatest and most important themes to fit this story. When Martin and his dad move into an apartment, Martin is apprehensive about it because of the fact that the place is old and practically falling apart. For one, Martin is afraid of elevators, and he has to use an old one everyday. To top it off, he has to ride the old thing with a mysterious, creepy, fat lady. Once Martin s situation gets to the point of being unbearable, he confronts his dad telling him about the creepy lady on the elevator. Martin s dad is the exact opposite of how a father should be. Martin s dad insults him whenever he looks to him for help. Also, Martin doesn t... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this fails to account for Martin s dad s and the lady on the elevator s actions because for one, Martin s dad continuously, non stop insults his own son, making him feel like a disappointment. If one was to be treated like that by their own father, one would also think that they would be hurt or affected in some way. Martin is not acting irrational or making a big deal of his situation, if anything, he reacted normally. Like I said before, in the story after Martin goes to his dad seeking for help, his dad starts insulting him and calling him names, what does one think he should do at twelve when you look to your father because you have no mother and all his dad does is insult him? Therefore Martin is doing well in his situation because he tries not to cry as the story says, he only cries when his situation is unbearable which is appropriate in this situation. In conclusion, William Sleator uses many different craft moves to lead to the theme. Sleator uses thoughtshots, foreshadowing, irony, and tension to lead readers to infer that the theme of the story is in order to thrive in life, you cannot let other s judgement s change you or the way you think. Martin learns the hard way because he allows his dad, bullies at school, and the lady on the elevator affect him, and then ironically his worst fear becomes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taking a Closer Look at Prison Gangs Prison Gangs Ever since the creation of the first prison gang the Gypsy Jokers , gangs in prisons have been a handful for officials trying to provide safety and security not only for corrections workers but for inmates as well. Prison gangs have been responsible for carrying out any number of illicit activites behind bars, these include but may not be limited to: gambling, drugs, protection, and prostitution (Knox, 2012). Over the years research for prison gangs proves difficult because of the secretive nature behind these organizations, but there is new evidence being brought to light that is helping combat these illusive and lucrative criminal organizations. There are currently 150,000 incarcerated gangmembers across the United... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A study done in 1996 on prisoners of the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed inmates for the first 3 years of their incarceration. This study found that inmates with no gang affiliation were significantly less likely that those wit either street gang affiliation or prison gang affiliation to have been guilty of a violent misconduct (Griffin, 2006). Also noted in the Griffon study, inmates who have a gang affiliation are less likely to participate in needed rehab and vocational programs that may help them upon release. A big problem with prison gangs is that very little is known about them, this is because they are very secretive, unlike their counterparts on the streets (Fong, 1991). The reason for this secrecy is so gang members can avoid being persecuted by the prison administration. Over the years prison officials have come up with different ways to handle prisoners in gangs, one method is called jacketing. Jacketing is when an inmate recieves a mark on his record, or his jacket , that marks him as a gang member. From there an inmate can be moved to a higher security prison or a different housing unit if officials felt it was needed (Hunt, 1993). A problem with jacketing is it can be used by prisoners to get someone moved that they don t like, by simply going to a supervisor as a confidential informant and pointing someone out as a gang member. • 10. The Strange Death Of Silas Deane Summary Studying history can be an active, often arduous process, dependent on making assumptions with the evidence available and proving those assumptions to be correct or otherwise. But it can also be an easy task if done incorrectly, one of cutting corners and assuming falsehoods to be true for the sake of convenience. This is the way that many historians, amateur or professional, approach history. Not only does this approach exclude any possibility for well constructed conclusions to be made, it can also leave the populace ignorant of the truth. In The Strange Death of Silas Deane , James West Davidson and Mark Hamilton Lytle argue that history is not merely the act of collecting data rather of making assumptions about the data through the use of countless rhetorical questions, paragraphorganization, and a sardonic tone. The Strange Death of Silas Deane retraces the story of Silas Deane, an early American politician, and the events that led up to his death. The authors begin by revealing the conclusion that most historians have made about the case: Deane committed suicide. Then, they steadily disprove that conclusion with a myriad of facts and interpretations. The essay provides a thorough recount of Deane s life and argues that Silas didn t commit suicide rather, he was murdered. To give weight to this hypothesis, the authors draw from reserves of knowledge about Deane and his closest friend, Edward Bancroft. After investigating Bancroft s life and his relationship with ... Because of Britain s occupation of Hong Kong at the time, it is easy to see why Hong Kong citizens would like to see the British be defeated by someone who holds Chinese beliefs so sacred, and by someone who is held so sacred in Hong Kong. • 26. The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Analysis Life is difficult because no one can be sure if the choice they make will actually lead the outcome they wished for. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, one of the most recognizable poems in American literature, speaks to choices people face in their life. The speaker has to make a right choice for him, that will lead to the outcome of being what he really wants to be. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost uses symbolism, imagery, personification, and metaphor, to explain its theme that choices made by the one s strong wish of what one really wants to be, will ultimately lead to the desired outcome. The poem uses symbols to indicate the choices that the speaker faces in life. The two diverged road symbolize the two significant choices that diverge the future of speaker s life. The fork in the road indicates the point in the speaker s life where he can go no farther without making a decision that takes him down one path and does not allow him to take the other. The yellow wood (1) indicates fall when the leaves turn yellow in the forest. Fall is a symbol of the waning years of speaker s life, meaning that the speaker is past his youth when he can make a choice with the confidence that it is correctable at a later time. Therefore, the choice that he will make is permanent and highly impacts the rest of his life. Imagery and personification are used to describe contradiction in the process of making a decision between the two paths. Since he cannot take both roads, the speaker looks down the road but cannot see beyond the undergrowth, which expresses the fact that no one knows what the future will bring. Much of the imagery in the poem is visual to describe the path to show the speaker s indecisiveness of choosing a certain path. He wants to choose the path that is less traveled so he chooses the path that is having perhaps the better claim (7), which is the path that is grassy and wanted wear (8), a personification to describe that road is not stepped by other people. Galvani famously showed in 1794 that a frog leg will contract when touched with the cut sciatic nerve of the other leg. This scientific breakthrough led to extensive research of electromagnetism within organisms. Electromagnetic fields have been found to affect a variety of biological processes including angiogenesis, cell division, cell signaling, nerve sprouting, prenatal development, and wound healing [1]. Only in recent decades with the development of molecular and cellular technology has the link between cell biology and bioelectricity been discovered [2]. • 29. HTML5 And The Future Of Technical Documentation HTML5 and the Future of Technical Documentation By: Jessica Morley May 2015 Introduction: A Crossroad in History T echnical writing is at a crossroad in history. Gone are the days when people read technical documentation from print in manuals, books, inserts, or pamphlets. Likewise, the practice of reading documentation from a CD Rom or desktop software application is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Today, if people want technical information, they go straight to their browsers to find what they re looking for. With the advent of handheld smart phones, laptops, and tablets, teamed with the ubiquity of reliable internet connection everywhere, people demand versatile, responsive, and accessible documentation that can meet their information needs. HTML5, the new HTML standard officially recommended in October 2014, is the World Wide Web Consortium s (W3C s) answer to this new age of high speed on demand information, and technical writers are beginning to take notice. However, the question remains: should technical writers adapt to this new wave of technology, and if so, to what extent will HTML5 impact the user experience and the technical writing process? There are a growing number of technical writers who are just shy of entirely enthusiastic for this brave new world of technology. Peter Lubbers, an experienced technical writer, published author, and current Senior Program Manager at Google, is one such individual who may tip the scale on the enthusiasm ... The principle first appeared in a legal context in a document prepared by the international Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD ) and included the following recommendation: The principle to be used for allocating costs of pollution prevention and control measures to encourage rational use of scarce environmental resources and to avoid distortions in international trade and investment is the so called Polluter Pays principle . This principle means that the polluter should bear the expenses of carrying out the above mentioned measures decided by public authorities to ensure that the environment is in an acceptable state. In other words, the cost of these measures should be reflected in the costs of goods and services which cause pollution in production and/or consumption. Such measures should not be accompanied by subsidies that would create significant distortions in international trade and investment . In 2001, the OECD Joint Working Party on Agriculture and ... Idealistic views that British writers once held, turned into skepticism as Great Britain enter war and inequalities grew greater. The Moment before the Gun Went Off by Nadine Gordimerand The Day They Burned the Books by Jean Rhys are both stories that show the shattering of Idealism in twentieth and twenty first centuries. • 33. Police Shootings And Police Brutality The topic that has my interest would be police shooting and how much it has gotten worse over the years. Thiers a lot of questions asked when it comes to police shootings/police brutality. The first thing that the media always brings up is did the person deserve to be shot or was the person shooting at the police, in which case two valid questions but the fact the cops shoot to kill it appears in many police shooting they will usually shoot at the body of the person, they aren t likely to shoot at your legs or a place that won t automatically cause death. The reason this is a concern is because I believe the African Americancommunity is targeted more than any other ethnic group in America, they are more searched than any other ethnic group it causes fear with the community and this also makes the police job harder, because now they will be more trigger happy to shoot someone in a slight move they make. A big media case from last year was shown an African American man helping his patience that left his care, while this was going on the man was laying down with his hands up telling the cops I am just trying to help my patience within 2 minutes the policeman shoots at the unarmed man injuring him, but lucky the man survived. The strange part of this shooting was that the police was 20 foot from the man that they shot, which also makes you wonder how is it possible that a man can have his arm raised clearly a video of the incident showing the man with his hands up still was ... • 45. Literary Criticism In To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate... Literary criticism is defined as an informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature. An example of a literary criticism is intertextual criticism, which is a comparison of two literary works in terms of symbols, themes, characters, and other criteria. In the fictitious novels To Kill a Mockingbird and A Separate Peace, Harper Lee and John Knowles use intertextual criticism to allow the reader to associate the novelwith other works and establish connections. Throughout the stories A Separate Peace and To Kill A Mockingbird , the stories contain several similarities in terms of loss of innocence, using a tree as a symbol of friendship, and using the scapegoat archetype. Loss of innocence was addressed in both novels in similar ways. When Phineas exhibited confusion at Gene s studying habits, Gene felt like his brain exploded, he minded, despised the possibility that I might be head of the school (Knowles 45). In both works of literature, a sudden realization triggered a loss of innocence and change in attitude. In this case, when Gene found out that Phineas minded that he could be the top of their class, he interpreted it as Phineas being envious and wanting him to fail. Gene thinking that Phineas wants him to fail completely changed the dynamic of their relationship and Gene s naive thoughts of him and Phineas having a healthy friendship. Comparably, when Brinker confronted Phineas and Gene about the tree incident, the words shocked Phineas into awareness (Knowles 167). When Phineas realized the true reason behind his injury, Phineas s character, specifically in the way he acted towards Gene, was affected. Phineas had spent the majority of the novel in denial of Gene s crimes and when he found out he came to the realization that not everyone was on his side. With this comes his loss of naivety and his undying love for life were compromised. Similarly in To Kill A Mockingbird, when Jem found out the true views of Maycomb it was, Jem s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears...it ain t fair (Lee 243). Similar to the previous two examples Jem was a young boy who after hearing the verdict of the trial, comes to the realization of the true working of Maycomb. After seeing ... His book is mainly composed of case studies showing how water in certain areas, like Las Vegas and India, has been dwindling and the absence of preparation in those places when the water is almost gone. Lastly, he talks about the misconceptions of tap water and the lack of understanding communities and people in power have about the future of water. Fishman explains that most of the water on Earth exists in a fourth form, not ice, liquid, or vapor, but it exists as molecular water. This abundance of water is locked in the rock of the Earth s mantle, about 255 miles deep. Unfortunately, this water is almost totally inaccessible to the people on Earth. Steven Jacobsen, a geophysicist at Northwestern University, explains to Fishman that the water in the rocks is not like the water that comes out of the tap. Jacobsen says, If you release the pressure and temperature, the hydrogen and the OH come out as water (Fishman, pg 34). However, the amount of pressure and technology needed to ... • 49. Attending The A Homicide Trial I plan to attend the a homicide trial. I went by myself to Sonoma s Superior Court buildings the day before and asked a woman working which cases would be good to go to and she recommended I come in the next day to see a triple homicide trial on Mark Capello. I have never been to a court proceeding before, so I am not exactly sure what to expect. I am excited at the prospect of viewing a homicide case. Will it be like the court shows on television? I enjoy watching dateline, and in that show they actually play clips of real court trials that have occurred. However, they only show the most interesting parts for television. I expect that this court proceeding will be different to what I have seen on t.v. I am picturing myself being... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There will also be bailiffs near the exits there to keep the peace and ensure safety in the courthouse. As the trail begins, I imagine that the bailiffs will ask all of us in the courtroom to rise as the judge and the jury come in. After we sit, I believe that the judge will be announced and a small introduction will be stated to refresh everyone s memories of what is going on most recently in the trail. As soon as that is done, I assume that we will dive right into the proceedings. To be honest, I am not really sure what will happen in the court room. It all depends on what point in the trial they are at. The defense attorney could be questioning someone. The prosecutor could be questioning somebody. Somebody could be testifying, whether it be a witness, an expert, or Mark Capello himself. For all I know, I could possibly see images from the crime scene. I know that the murders happened in early 2013, so they could be pretty far along in the trail. I simply plan on being present and trying to take good notes and absorb as much as I can for the two hours I am there. Part II At eight in the morning on March 18th, my classmate Hallie and I showed up at the Administration building to go see a criminal court proceeding. The trail didn t start until 8:30 am but we both wanted to get their early to ensure that we got through security and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Autobiography Of My Mother My mother is mestiza, my father is mestizo, my brother is mestizo, my tias, my tios, as am I. All mestizos. I ve been told I am worthy of praise because I carry your language on my tongue without an accent, because I had an American education, because I can recite allegiance to your country. I am told I am worthy because I could assimilate to the culture, unlike my parents. I am often presented with shocked faces when I speak my second language, English, faces that always tell me that they would have never guessed I spoke so perfectly, thinking they d have to work twice as hard to understand my heavy, foreign accent the same accent my parents have. On top of that, I am the color of the sun reigning on my skin. I found from my 17 years here, it does not matter whether you are the color of milk or whether I speak English without an accent, the moment I speak Spanish and invite someone outside of my culture into my home and they notice I have Caso Cerrado on TV or see my mother swinging her hips to Vicente Fernandez, I am no longer White to them or an insider. I am other, an outsider. A dangerous outsider. Ni de aqui, ni de aca. Ni de aqui, not White enough, deemed too Mexican. Ni de aca, not Mexican enough, mestiza, and too whitewashed. Linda Alcoff (2006) said that after both her and her sister became highly assimilated, they found that the process created feelings of alienation, inferiority, and inadequacy (p. 266). They diligently censored themselves and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Victor Krempe s Accomplishments When M. Krempe said this while addressing the gathering of scientists at the university, he was not praising Victor for his efforts, though it may have seemed as if he was. With his use of hyperbole, M. Krempe is able to somewhat discredit Victor s achievements, by referring to him as a youngster rather than an educated adult, for example. Additionally, he attempts to discredit his hard work and dedication to his education while also undermining his knowledge by bringing up the timeline of his science education. One of Victor s first goals was to learn as much as he could about modern science, and he accomplished that goal remarkably fast. He was successful in his scientific pursuits, and his experimental developments are capable of changing the world. This was the goal that he had in mind when he began his studies, but now that he has made a discovery that is capable of changing the world, he has discovered that knowledge comes at a price, and is no longer in pursuit of the glory that accompanies his discovery. When Victor realized that the monstrosity that was created under his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the young age of five, he had a goal to protect Elizabeth from harm and the horrors of the world. Until this point, he had been successful with this goal. Now, however, he is the creator of the reason for her anguish, and he can t explain to her that he unknowingly created their brother s murderer. He has no one that he can completely trust with this secret, so he has to keep it inside, where the guilt is already tearing him apart. With so many emotions consuming him, it is plausible to predict that Victor may make a rash decision to go after his creation, or try to bring his brother back to life again for example, even though these things could prove to be immensely dangerous. His motivation for choosing to do these actions would be to try and make up for the death of his brother, which he feels responsible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Money Can Buy Happiness. .Most Of Us Are Familiar With Money Can Buy Happiness Most of us are familiar with the old adage, Money can t buy happiness, but few question the validity of the statement and its meaning. The debate: Can money buy you happiness? is a spirited debate that has been argued since currency came about. There are those that side with the popular saying and argue that money has no relation to an individual s happiness. Those in support of the expression, money can t buy happiness, state the claim that true happiness stems from internal feelings of self worth, where meaning in life is naturally created by doing good, acting justly, and abiding by purity. Those that dispute the saying and believe the opposite have found a shared commonality in several contributing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If it were true, that there is no link between money and happiness, why have economists studied this connection for many years? In fact, in just the past 30 years, studies have shown there is indeed a significant association between money and happiness. Over the course of these studies, it has been determined that people in rich countries are far happier than people in poor countries (Maich 1). The relationship between wealth and happiness has even been described to be, more complicated than the romantic entanglements of any Desperate Housewife (Futrelle 1). It is true that the connection between happiness and money is intricate, however, the link is measurable. Based on a study done by the University of Michigan, it was found that, a higher income leads to a greater sense of well being, which in turn, contributes to an individual s happiness greatly (Kurtzleben 1). While the opposition argues there is no apparent link between wealth and happiness, it is clear to see that there is a very real connection between the two. Additionally, wealth and happiness now appear to be far more dependent on one another than we may have previously come to terms with. It is ironic that the opposition, who argue there is no real relationship between wealth and happiness are the very people arguing that, if there is any link between the two, money only contributes to temporary happiness. Both of these arguments can be rebutted swiftly. It has already been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
