Protists can reproduce sexually through alteration of generations or asexually through mitosis. They are found in fresh water, salt water, and damp soil. Protists exhibit both eukaryotic and unicellular characteristics and can be autotrophic or heterotrophic. There are three major phyla of protists: protozoa, algae, and slime molds. Protozoa include amoebas and paramecium that move using pseudopodia or cilia and can be free living or parasitic.
