The Fixer Essay
The Fixer
In the novel, The Fixer, the author, Bernard Malamud, presents to us a poor Jewish handyman living
in Russia during the early 1900 s, before the Russian revolution had begun. Destroyed by his wife s
disavowal, Yakov Shepsovitch Bok leaves his shtetl in search of opportunities for a better life. After a
few months of desperate searching, Yakov sneaks out of the ghetto to look for work among the goyim.
As he searches the streets, he stumbles upon a man who lay drunk on the floor. Yakov immediately
recognizes a pin on the man s coat as belonging to the anti Semite organization called the Black
Hundreds. Putting his doubts behind him, Yakov decides to help the fat Russian. Not aware of Yakov s
origins, the Russian offers him a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He states he is a Jew only by birth and nationality, though nobody understands what is meant by that.
To the Russians he is legally a mere Jew. At one point Yakov says to himself I m Yakov Fixer... the
kind of man who finds it perilous to be alive.
One thing I must learn is to say less much less, or I ll ruin myself. As it is I m already ruined.
During his first few months in prison, Yakov does not seem to get accustomed to the hardships. As
time passes him by, however, he grows used to life in a prison cell, but it only gets worst. As the novel
unfolds, Yakov becomes extremely weak and thin and he looses the trifling faith that was still left in
him.
Throughout the novel, the main idea is very obvious.
It is Yakov falsely accused of the murder of a young boy in order to drain his blood for the baking of
the Passover matzos. The theme of anti Semitism in Russia during the time of pogroms and of Tsar
Nicholas the second is a universal theme presented to us as the book unravels. It is evident that if
Yakov had not been born of the Jewish faith, he would not have been charged with the murder of
Zhenia Golov. He was being used only as an example to the three million Jewish residents of Russia.
He was being used as a warning. The meaning of the title The Fixer,

Feminism In African Feminism
According to Naomi Nkealah who considers diverse streams of African feminisms as something
which strive to create a new, liberal, productive and self reliant African woman within the
heterogeneous cultures of Africa. Feminisms in Africa, ultimately, aim at modifying culture as it
affects women in different societies. Thus taking the multifarious nature of African experience into
consideration, African Feminisms explore the possibilities of embracing the magnitude of their
collective experiences. Assorted patterns of feminisms, that deviate from the conceptual equations of
(western) feminism and construed after indigenous models emerged in African backdrop such as
Womanism, Stiwanism, Nego feminism, Motherism, Femalism and Snail sense feminism. Being
indigenous blueprints these variegated modes were attempts to demarcate African female at the centre
of entire contentions and to explore in the cultural chronicles for material to initiate further
elaboration. For Adichie the label feminist is not something derogatory but an umbrella where every
woman should find shelter in. Adichie s pronouncements are completely against the preconceived
notions on gender are not meaningful but (universally) arbitrary. In We All Shall Be Feminists she
says: But that is not what this conversation is about. Gender and class are different. Poor men still
have the privileges of being men, even if they do not have the privileges of being wealthy. I learned a

Thesis: Characters that cause immense pain to another, especially to their consorts, succumb to death
in the texts So Long A Letter and
Blood Wedding by Mariama Bâ and Federico García Lorca respectively.
Death is one aspect of life that prevents a person from being invincible. It is one of the inevitable
occurrences that a man has to yield to. In the texts So Long A Letter and Blood Wedding by Mariama
Bâ and Federico García Lorca respectively, death is a poignant theme that has prevailed throughout
the course of the text. The question is whether the deaths of characters in these texts are deserved, and

He deliberately forgot his older family only giving attention to his new wife, Binetou. This created
hatred and antipathy in
Ramatoulaye s heart for Modou as I quote:
And to think that I loved this man passionately, to think that I gave him thirty years of my life, to think
that twelve times over I carried his child. The addition of a rival to my life was not enough for him.
In loving someone else, he burned his past, both morally and materially. He dared to commit such an
act of disavowal
From this extract, it is evident that Ramatoulaye was not at all happy with her husband. This is
because he was the cause of her grief; he abandoned her after all those years of marriage. She was also
exasperated due to the fact that not only did he want to get married to a woman, but he also wanted to
be a sugar daddy . Therefore, she feels that the marriage was unnecessary. This is confirmed by the
quote: Was it madness, weakness, irresistible love? What inner confusion led
Modou Fall to marry Binetou?
As we can see that Modou caused a lot of pain for poor Ramatoulaye; therefore, succumbing to death,
I agree to the statement characters that cause immense pain to another, especially to their consorts,
succumb to death.
Likewise, in Blood Wedding, we see the character of the protagonist,
Leonardo. His death is announced by the Beggar Woman and does not come as a shock due to the
actions he had performed. The fact that he had angered his wife

Some collages that are revered and offer computer science degrees are Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in the city of Cambridge, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and

Although knowing what degrees are needed to become a software developer and the colleges to go to
are important, one of the main things someone would need to know to be a software developer would
be the skills required. One skill that is required is reading comprehension. This is vital to becoming a
software developer because computer programmers (software developers) must be able to comprehend
other programmer s code as well as other work related events involving literature. Another skill
required is critical thinking. This is a required skill because software developers need to use critical
thinking to solve problems and bugs. An ability needed to become a software developer is deductive
reasoning. Deductive reasoning is required because it allows the person to use general rules to solve
problems both inside, and outside the code. All of these skills and abilities would help someone
become a software developer and succeed in the industry.
Knowing the skills and abilities to become a software developer is definitely needed, but typically
someone would want to know the salary and demand for this occupation. First off, the demand for

The Effects Of Seaworld On Our Culture
Whales in captivity are hurting others as well as themselves; for example, they have been seen and
recorded performing acts of self harming, smacking their heads against the sides of the pool
repeatedly. Whales in captivity swim in trance like states, forced to perform tricks for food, working
endlessly for the pure entertainment of humans. Whales in captivity eat a monotonous diet, meaning it
lacks variety. Orcas living in SeaWorld facilities are primarily fed dead herring, as opposed to diets
including a variety of different animals and species in the wild. This is not beneficial to their health
and as a result these whales bodies react by vomiting constantly (SeaWorld of Hurt). Orcas in
captivity commonly attempt biting through the metal bars that divide pools in order to get oral
stimulation (BuzzFeed). These whales need help and we are blindsided by the overpowering effect
SeaWorld has on our culture. When captive whales interact with humans, their behavior is abnormal.
Humans normally do not interact with killer whales personally in the wild, so interaction between
trainers and orcas at SeaWorld has been an experimented act for decades. There is no prior research
supporting orcas and humans interacting successfully before SeaWorld first opened its doors in 1964,
which is why there is so much controversy today. SeaWorld allowed complete interaction with killer
whales and other animals prior to the arrival of Tilikum and before there was ever a fatal injury, as a

The Bluest Eye By Jacqueline Woodson
Although written decades apart, Jacqueline Woodson s Another Brooklyn and Toni Morrison s The
Bluest Eye both explore the trials and tribulations that young black girls must endure as they begin to
step into womanhood. While the burdens that the protagonists in each of these texts differ in some key
ways, one of the most interesting things that both Woodson and Morrison depicted was a sense of
difficulty in coping with these changes, and rather than having any semblance of mastery over their
circumstances, these young protagonists would instead project their emotions onto something else as
they try to discover what causes their suffering. Morrison s The Bluest Eye, for example, features this
prominently throughout the text as Pecola sets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Junior, Geraldine s son, loathes this cat, as the text states, [as Junior] grew older, he learned how to
direct his hatred of his mother to the cat, and spent some happy moments watching it suffer (Morrison
86). This section not only serves as another example of projection from a developing, young, black
character, but more importantly, it also sets up the expectation for this cat to be loved. Later in the text,
Pecola finally goes to Junior s home to see the cat, and Junior promptly throws the cat in her face and
locks them both in a room (89 90). But as Pecola stays in the sealed room, something odd begins to
happen. She looks down at the cat, and the text gives us a description of the cat as black all over, deep
silky black, and his eyes, pointing down toward his nose, were bluish green (90). Originally, then, the
cat s eyes are described as bluish green until Pecola sees the light hit them in a certain way, then they
shift to blue. The text continues, The light made them shine like blue ice. Pecola rubbed the cat s head;
he whined, his tongue flicking with pleasure. The blue eyes in the black face held her (90). Notably,
the moment that the light changes the eyes of the cat to blue, Pecola begins to show it affection, and
the cat begins to show signs of happiness. Notably, past this point in the text, at least for the remainder
of when the cat is mentioned, he is always given the description of having blue eyes rather

Love and War between Mothers and Daughters
A mother and daughter relationship can be either good or bad, but it s definitely interesting. People say
this kind of bond is unbreakable because of what they shared during pregnancy and birth, but others
say this bond doesn t last for long or maybe never really grew. In this short story A Pair of Tickets and

In the poem Hanging Fire is written from a point of view of a 14 year old girl who is worried about
her life ending to early and seems to be impatient about when her life will start to turn around and go
the right away. The first and second line I am fourteen and my skin has betrayed me means that this
girl believes she is missing out on things because she is not white. Many young children are unaware
of their race and how they can become affected by it, but as they get older around the time of puberty
they start to notice the difference. In line three, four and five the boy I cannot live without still l sucks

She thinks she is old enough of all in love but the boy that she loves is still childish. She doesn t seem

At the begging of the poem the ancient Mariner and shipmates believed the Albatross to be heavenly.
At length did cross an Albatross,
Through the fog it came;
As if it had been a Christian soul,
We hailed it in God s name. (Page 200)
They associated the wind picking up with the Albatross arrival and though that is was god that made
his presents to help them in the form of the Albatross. Yet, when the fog creeped in the ancient
Mariner assumed it was the Albatross creating the bad luck and that he was not a creature sent by God.

he believed if he could control the fate of the Albatross he then had control of the weather. Even
though humans can t control nature he wanted to be in control of his own fate (that is human nature).
When the weather becomes worse he interprets it as his fault because once again he must be in control
of his outcome. If you look closely to the begging and end of the poem it hints that for him to be the

The Negative Effects Of Technology And Its Effects On Our...
As we go into the future we see that computers are not going anywhere and are becoming more and
more prevalent throughout our society. The big question is whether or not this is helping or hurting us.
Man dates back over twenty thousand years ago, and we are always advancing. During the early years
when we were first starting to forming colonies on new land we notice that guns helped to give us and
edge. New technology is what helped found this country. Nowadays we look at cell phones and
internet and how we are able to communicate with people all the way on the other side of the world
with ease. Without technology like cellphones, laptops, and tablets we would not be able to
communicate so fast and easily. Others argue that this is why our society is corrupt and that
cellphones, computers, and new technology is the root of this evil. They believe that machines are
what cause people to become fat, and that games are making children angry. These are also the same
people that say the internet is making it easier for children to access things that they shouldn t see. The
International Journal of Obesity says that The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased
among children and adolescents, as well as among adult, and television viewing has been suggested as
one cause. Playing digital games (video, computer and console games), or using computer may be

themes in lost horizon Essay
What is Paradise? Throughout history man has sought to create, find, or at least image a paradise on
earth, a place where there is peace, harmony, and a surcease from the pain that plagues our lives. On
the eve of World War II, James Hilton imagined such a place in his best selling novel, Lost Horizon.
The story itself begins when an evacuation of Westerners is ordered in the midst of revolution in
Baksul, India. A plane containing four passengers is hi jacked and flown far away into the Keun Lun
Mountains of Tibet. The plane crashes and the passengers are welcomed to the valley of the Blue

Almost immediately Conway feels he is ideally suited to their way of life. He meets other lamas who
have been at Shangri la for a long time, including Lo Tsen, with whom he quietly falls in love with.
All the newcomers desire to stay, except for Mallinson. He and Lo Tsen fall in love with one another
and makes plans to leave. Conway warns Mallinson not to take Lo Tsen back with him, knowing her
extreme old age will cause her to die immediately. Mallinson doubts Conway s knowledge of Shangri
la, which in turn leads Conway himself to doubt and eventually consent to leave. After their departure
from Shangri la, the story is unresolved. We are lead to believe that there was truth to the story and
that Lo Tsen rapidly ages then dies, we are never definitively told the fates of the her, Conway and
Mallinson following their departure from Shangri la.
A theme found in Lost Horizon is the desire to leave and apparent utopia in favor of a former home,
however flawed. This is comparable to Odysseus who wanted to leave the utopian island of Kalypso
to return home to Ithaca and his wife. The British youth Mallinson is similar to Odysseus in this
respect. While Conway, Barnard and Miss Brinklow find Shangri la a satisfying place to live,
Mallinson intensely desires to leave and return home to his family, friends, and country. The other
characters lack of connections to the outside world causes the difference in their attitudes

Captain Americ The American Dream
Captain s Duty From Captain America s birth, he symbolized America. In and out of costume, Captain
America, AKA Steve Rodgers, exemplifies all the best qualities of America. He embodies the
American dream. America continues to grow more diverse every day, yet still Steve remains the
undying patriotic example of what it means to be American.
The American dream in simple terms is the fulfillment of the ideals the America was founded on with
equal respect. To go into more detail, the American Dream allows all people the rights of liberty,
autonomy, justice, dignity, the pursuit of happiness, and the ability to hold the country s leaders
accountable when they fail to uphold these rights. Because the American dream applies to all people

The patriotic symbol of the American dream has numerous times dissented from the ruling political
powers. Steve Rodgers lives the life of a patriot through and through, but it is important to understand
what it means to live patriotically. Captain America s patriotism doesn t hinge on blind passion of one
s country right or wrong or on the us versus them mentality produced during war times. These types of
patriotisms prevent the betterment of the world at large. These exclusionary patriotisms neglect the
dignity of other peoples and creates the illusion that anyone who thinks differently belongs to the them
party. Instead, Cap s patriotism lies of Stephen Nathanson s philosophic moderate patriotism, which
balances devotion to one s country with ethical demands to care for all (White 147). Captain America
embraces the shared humanity of people across national borders. He would strongly support
Nathanson s claim that so long as devotion to one s country do not lead to immoral actions, then
patriotism can be laudable. When concern for the own country blinds people to the legitimate needs
and interests of other nations, then patriotism becomes a vice (White147). Captain America believes
countries have the right to pursue its interest, but this should be done with consideration of other

Positive Impact Of Christopher Columbus Discoveries
Positive Impact of Christopher Columbus Discoveries
The world is a better place because of Christopher Columbus important discoveries in the New World.
His explorations resulted in the vast expansion of property for Europe, the exchange of goods and
cultures between countries and a change in the worldview of geography. Columbus s explorations
were the catalyst for unprecedented trade known as the Columbian Exchange, which started the
exchange of goods and ideas that would last for centuries and change the world forever. His
discoveries unearthed new perspectives and created a mix of diverse biology between Europe and the
New World. These exchanges changed the world we live in today and will continue to fuel centuries
of exploration and discoveries. The Columbian Exchange was the beginning of the expansion of trade
between the New World and Europe. The Columbian Exchange started the flow of goods between
continents that had not shared the same borders since Pangaea. McNeill stated Columbus voyage,
along with the many voyages that followed, disrupted much of the biological segregation brought
about by continental drift. (McNeil, 1). Journalist Charles Mann states in his research for his book,
1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created, on the Columbian Exchange that No other
person, changed the face of the Earth as radically as Columbus did. Columbus crossing of the Atlantic,
Mann says, marked the start of a new age, not only for the Americas but also

Role Of Copper In The Chain Of Life Essay
INTRODUCTION: COPPER S PLACE IN THE CHAIN OF LIFE
For good health and vitality, the human body needs several key nutrients that work together, like the
links of a chain. If one of the links is broken, the chain is ineffective hence the saying: A chain is as
strong as its weakest link. The nutrients that form the chain of life are carbohydrates, protein,
vitamins, enzymes, lipids and sterols and minerals. All the six must be present in adequate quantities
for life to thrive.
Minerals, the group that copper belongs to, are critical to every chemical reaction that occurs in the
body. Whether it s energy production, tissue manufacture, protein synthesis, water balance or cellular
growth and reproduction, at least one mineral is required. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consumption of high amounts of zinc can help remove of excess copper from the body.
COPPER RICH FOODS
Because the human body cannot synthesize copper, this mineral must be obtained exclusively from
diet in trace amounts. You ll get dietary copper from a wide variety of foods, which include dark green
leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach; seafood such as oysters, squid and lobster; dried legumes
such as kidney beans and soy and nuts such as walnuts, hazelnuts and cashew nuts.
Other food sources of copper include organ meat such as liver, avocado, chocolate, dried peaches, figs
and raisins. Drinking water supplied through copper pipes also delivers some small quantities of
copper, even though most people don t anything about it. Such an abundance of dietary sources of
copper might suggest that there s no need for supplementation. But a recent research has established
an emerging trend that should get people to sit up and listen. According to a recent survey, only 25%
of Americans are consuming a daily amount of copper that the US Food and Nutrition Board of the
National Academy of Sciences considers to be adequate. Where has all the copper

years ago, but now Gil Cedillo wants to work with Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown on this issue that can

However, the issue supporters agree that California should allow undocumented immigrants to be

Large Trailer Analysis
Unfortunately, collisions involving large trucks and passenger vehicles are all too common on the
roads throughout North Carolina. In fact, the state s Department of Transportation reported that there
were more than 3,400 accidents involving semitrailers in 2013 alone. Due to the size differences
between the vehicles, such collisions often result in serious injuries, or death, for the occupants of
passenger vehicles. While not all trucking crashes can be avoided, there are steps that drivers can take
to reduce their odds of being involved in these types of accidents. Use caution when passing It is
obvious to most motorists that tractor trailers are much larger and longer than the average passenger

Drivers should be aware of this, and refrain from trying to squeeze in between these vehicles and the

weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Due to their size and weight, these vehicles require significantly
more stopping distance than passenger cars, trucks and SUVs. In ideal conditions, large trucks
traveling at 55 mph need about 430 feet to stop. Consequently, truckers may not be able to adjust and

Hockey Is The Root Of The Racism
Hockey fans are the root of the racism in hockey. For many decades Canadians have known hockey as
being their national sport. There are black Canadians, Asian Canadians, and Aboriginal Canadians.
What are the differences between those Canadians citizens but the pigment of their skin? There is
racism in hockey it is just not as clear as other forms of racism. Canada is so welcoming and is a very
diverse counrty. Hockey fans are so cruel and reluctant for change in their world. The focus of this
paper is on the lack of diversity in hockey. What will be examined is the differences between black
and white people, society s perception on hockey, Canada s history with the sport and diversity. The
overall question is: is it the sport or is it the people? Some people may argue that Canada is one of the
most multicultural countries in the world especially in sports, but how deeply do Canadians embrace
this diversity? Racism in sports occurs because of both individual and team sports. This is main cause
of the reported incidents in the media. It is not the sport itself that induces racism it is the organizers
and players that bring racism into sports. However, without the involvement of people/society there
would be no sport at all. Therefore, it is very important that we make people more aware that there
needs to be a notion of fair play (telegraph). Hockey fans are protectionists by nature. We have to
defend our game against any ill perception toward it. , said local hockey

Generalized Anxiety Disorder ( Gad ) Essay
Literature Review
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a disorder in which an individual may feel persistent,
excessive, and worry about everyday things that may not even happen. Individuals with this disorder
may feel worry, excessive anxiety, and have thoughts of the worst even when there is no need for
concern. A person experiencing GAD may expect a disaster. They may worry about their finances,
money, health, family, work, or any issue that may come to mind. This disorder may be present when
a person worrying increases on more days than one for at least six months. GAD can interfere with
work, school, family, and even social activities. GAD can be diagnosed in adults when they
experience at least three of the symptoms. These symptoms include restlessness or feeling on the edge,
fatigue, difficulty focusing or mind going blank, irritability, muscle tension, pain in back or headaches,
and sleep disturbance (ADAA, n.d.).
According to the Mayo Clinic, genetics may play a role as well as other factors, but is not fully
known. Some of the risk factors for GAD is personality, genetics, and sex. With personality, a person
who is shy, have negative thoughts, or who avoids dangerous situations may be more prone to
generalized anxiety disorder than others are. GAD may run in the family, thus being a genetic factor.
Also, women are more prone to have GAD than men. The common two treatments for GAD include
medication and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy

My Internship With The Neurology Department
The 8th floor of the hospital was unlike any other department I had ever worked at. It was not always
busy and loud like the ER, or cheerful like pediatric. The 8th floor always felt gloomy with its dimly

neurology department. As an intern, I was in charge of feeding patients breakfast and lunch among
other responsibilities. Unlike other patients who were not able to chew or swallow their meal properly,
Mr. Peter always finished his food with a good appetite. He used to request two orders of pancakes,
one to eat during breakfast and the other for midafternoon. Despite being blind, Mr. Peter constantly
shared colorful stories of his travels from around the world. My interest in medicine initially began
with a love for science. I was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Chemistry minor, and
I knew that I wanted to be a physician; one who not only understood the science behind medicine, but
who also knew how to connect with patients on a deeper level. As the internship at New York
Methodist progressed, I met patients who were once healthy, but were suddenly restricted to their bed,
such as the 35 year old English professor who could no longer control her bladder or bowel
movements, or the 48 year old nurse who lost her ability to chew or swallow food. Mr. Peter was
unlike these patients because he was stronger in the sense that he didn t need his food to be ground

The Rational Decision Making Model Essay
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The purpose of this report is to provide feedback on administrative and public policy violation issues
in the city of Crestview located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The report analyzes public policy
violations, City Council member adjudication, transparency, and leadership issues in the City of
Crestview. The report uses various research methods to gather data to help formulate the conclusion
and recommendations of the report.
The rational decision making model is utilized to make the best decision possible. The rational
decision making model is the best known prescriptive model; the model involves several sequential
steps: identifying the problem, determining the goals and objectives, identifying and evaluating
alternative policies, choosing from the alternatives, recommending actions, implementation, and
evaluation (Smith, 2014). The use of this model is justified as it provides structure and sequence to the
choices of the decision maker. The model helps ensure key indicators can be fully considered in a
logical manner.
It is recommended that the administration create new procedures and implement trainings or classes to
educate City Council members, employees and other city officials on new public policies as well as
the Sunshine Law. These trainings will outline laws, policies and ordinances as well as target times for
legislators to move any issue from the systemic agenda to the formal agenda; this policy should allow

Cost Of Perfectionism Essay
Perfection is often treated as a trait that is unattainable, yet we subconsciously strive to be perfect in
many aspects of our lives. Working to be successful and high achieving isn t necessarily a bad thing,
but it can grow out of hand when perfection is the only thought on our mind. Because of this, it is
necessary to find the right balance when dealing with perfectionism. When it comes to achieving our

Examples Of Leadership In Animal Farm By George Orwell
An Inept Leader: Calamity for a Nation and its People The state of a nation primarily reflects the
strength and aptness of its leader; a weak leader submits their nation into an abysmal state, whereas a
great one promotes progress. In Orwell s novella, Animal Farm, the animals of inferior intelligence
comply with their vehement leader, Napoleon, who initially demonstrates strong qualities as a leader.
However, Napoleon s leadership succumbs to corruption as he gradually implements unprincipled
authoritarian rules that primarily benefit the pigs at the expense of the working class. Similarly, past
leaders have displayed abuse of power for personal gain. Through his accurate incorporation of Czar
Nicholas II s traits into Napoleon s disposition, Orwell articulates how negligent leadership
jeopardizes a nation and its citizens, such as Turkmenistan under Saparmurad Niyazov s reign. Czar
Nicholas II crippled Russia by misusing his power in authority: he disregarded the harsh working
conditions and poor health of his citizens and sought control through violent means. Under his reign,

Henry Thoreau on Civil Disobedience
The Statue of Liberty is an American symbol of justice and freedom from oppression, yet in Henry
Thoreau s opinion, the U.S. government is completely antithetical. In Thoreau s essay on civil
disobedience, he introduces and accepts the motto, That government is best which governs not at all.
In his eyes, the government does more harm than good for its people. Underneath his seemingly main
idea, Thoreau implies an overall antithesis where he defines who, in his eyes, is allowed to be
disobedient. In order to advance this main idea and reinforce this mottos throughout the essay,
Thoreau uses metaphors and juxtaposition to strengthen this subtle antithesis found throughout the
essay. In his essay, Thoreau uses the extended metaphor of the government as machine to emphasize
how government dehumanizes its citizens. He relates the government to a machine in that it is made
up of many parts which all must work together for the machine to be successful. If something is
broken, one can fix the machine in order to better suit his/her needs. Thoreau introduces this metaphor
when he states, men serve the state not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. He begins
with the first, military men who serve with their bodies. These men, in most cases, have no free
exercise of moral sense serving under the state. Without the use of their moral sense or conscience,
Thoreau comes to the conclusion that they can be replaced by objects such as wood and stones and
therefore, have

Eventually, she was named camp director and lived at Camp Mosey Wood during the summer
(Negley). Backenstoe did all of these amazing events because it was something she wanted and was
inspired to do. This shows one of the many ways Low has influenced girls. She has influenced
Backenstoe to do what she loves and to go after her dreams. Something that she might not have done
without being in Low s scouts. Low was inspiring young girls to grow up to do whatever they pleased
to do and she was giving girls the tools they needed to do what they sat their minds to. During a time
when women were training to be housewives and mothers, Low was teaching the importance of
independent living, service to others and preparation for careers. She was able to break down the wall
that restricted women and taught girls how to succeed at any endeavor (Crichlow). She didn t care
about what girls were supposed to

Antoine Henri Jomini
The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were turbulent eras generating several changes in the way
how commanders led the war. The world owes a debt to one man for interpreting and recording his
contributions to strategy and the art of war: Antoine Henri Jomini. The purpose of this paper to
explain why the Jomini s theories are a school of thoughts that remain adequate for explaining warfare
in the modern era. The importance of logistics, the acceptance of principles of war, and the concept of
the geometry of battlespace proposed by Jomini s theories are three broad concepts that are still
adequate for explaining in the modern era. Incorporating the logistics in the planning process is a key
task to achieve important military outcomes. Clausewitz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mallick argues that The Principles of War are the principles expressing the rules of military thought
and actions that serve as the permanent basis for combat doctrine. Ettrich mentioned that to have a
better understanding of how Jomini developed his principles of war creating a set of thoughts that
have remained relatively unaltered for approximately two centuries, it is necessary to study his life, his
intense studies of war, military career, and the circumstances that shaped his tactical and strategic
thinking. Jomini as the same way of other military philosophers, tried to articulate his insights about
of the art of war presenting his ideas through a list of maxims or as a list of general truths whose
application contributes to success in war, they may be legitimately viewed, as the prototype of the
modern principles of war . Jomini s maxims are the closest thought to the modern principles of war.
Without considering the fact that Jomini never defined his concepts like general principles of war, nor
did he provided precise details of the fundamental principles he wrote, these have been adopted for
many armies in the world. In chapter six of Peter Paret s Makers of Modern Strategy: From
Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age, John Shy mentioned that many of the nineteenth centuries military
leaders accepted Jomini s maxims as valid principles. Ettrich recalls that historically, the Jomini s
concepts of principles of war were introduced to the United States in 1817 and were used initially at
the US Military Academy; these principles are still valid in the US Army doctrine. Weigley argues that
during the United States Civil War, military leaders from both sides embraced concepts and principles
learned while studying as contemporaries at the Military Academy prior to the rise and secession of
the Confederacy ; as a result, Union and Confederates leaders achieved

Causes Of Strokes
Each year more than 795,000 Americans have a stroke. Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death for
Americans but the risk of having a stroke varies with race and ethnicity. African Americans are more
likely to die because the risk of having a first stroke is nearly twice as high for African Americans.
Hispanics risk for a stroke is between whites and blacks. Age also has an impact on strokes as well. A
risk of a stroke increases with age, strokes can and will occur at any age. But what causes people to
have strokes? What exactly causes a stroke? A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is
reduced. This deprives the brain of oxygen and the nutrients, which causes brain cells to die. It can
also be caused by a blocked artery or the leaking of a blood vessel. Mayoclinic.org says that about
85% of strokes are ischemic strokes. They also said that ischemic strokes occur when the arteries to
the brain become narrowed, causing severely reduced blood flow. ... Show more content on

Which means if the stroke affected the left side of the brain then you will have problems on the right
side of your body. The same thing happens if the stroke affects the right side of the brain then you will

Sports Injury College Essay
Sports has always been a huge part of my life. I would be the one team player who took the sports
season a little bit too seriously. I was the number 1 doubles player on my school s JV tennis team.
Unfortunately, I fractured my ankle during my junior year and wasn t able to play with my team. I was
devastated, but I didn t allow myself to become disconnected from my team. I became the team
manager to allow myself to still play a role in my team, despite my injury. I would record scores to my
division leaders and take pictures to post on the website I created for my team. After the season was
over, my doctor told me my ankles required surgery to become fully healed. I knew that meant I
couldn t continue to play tennis, but I didn t want to give

  • 2. The Fixer Essay The Fixer In the novel, The Fixer, the author, Bernard Malamud, presents to us a poor Jewish handyman living in Russia during the early 1900 s, before the Russian revolution had begun. Destroyed by his wife s disavowal, Yakov Shepsovitch Bok leaves his shtetl in search of opportunities for a better life. After a few months of desperate searching, Yakov sneaks out of the ghetto to look for work among the goyim. As he searches the streets, he stumbles upon a man who lay drunk on the floor. Yakov immediately recognizes a pin on the man s coat as belonging to the anti Semite organization called the Black Hundreds. Putting his doubts behind him, Yakov decides to help the fat Russian. Not aware of Yakov s origins, the Russian offers him a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He states he is a Jew only by birth and nationality, though nobody understands what is meant by that. To the Russians he is legally a mere Jew. At one point Yakov says to himself I m Yakov Fixer... the kind of man who finds it perilous to be alive. One thing I must learn is to say less much less, or I ll ruin myself. As it is I m already ruined. During his first few months in prison, Yakov does not seem to get accustomed to the hardships. As time passes him by, however, he grows used to life in a prison cell, but it only gets worst. As the novel unfolds, Yakov becomes extremely weak and thin and he looses the trifling faith that was still left in him. Throughout the novel, the main idea is very obvious. It is Yakov falsely accused of the murder of a young boy in order to drain his blood for the baking of the Passover matzos. The theme of anti Semitism in Russia during the time of pogroms and of Tsar Nicholas the second is a universal theme presented to us as the book unravels. It is evident that if Yakov had not been born of the Jewish faith, he would not have been charged with the murder of Zhenia Golov. He was being used only as an example to the three million Jewish residents of Russia. He was being used as a warning. The meaning of the title The Fixer, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Feminism In African Feminism According to Naomi Nkealah who considers diverse streams of African feminisms as something which strive to create a new, liberal, productive and self reliant African woman within the heterogeneous cultures of Africa. Feminisms in Africa, ultimately, aim at modifying culture as it affects women in different societies. Thus taking the multifarious nature of African experience into consideration, African Feminisms explore the possibilities of embracing the magnitude of their collective experiences. Assorted patterns of feminisms, that deviate from the conceptual equations of (western) feminism and construed after indigenous models emerged in African backdrop such as Womanism, Stiwanism, Nego feminism, Motherism, Femalism and Snail sense feminism. Being indigenous blueprints these variegated modes were attempts to demarcate African female at the centre of entire contentions and to explore in the cultural chronicles for material to initiate further elaboration. For Adichie the label feminist is not something derogatory but an umbrella where every woman should find shelter in. Adichie s pronouncements are completely against the preconceived notions on gender are not meaningful but (universally) arbitrary. In We All Shall Be Feminists she says: But that is not what this conversation is about. Gender and class are different. This created hatred and antipathy in Ramatoulaye s heart for Modou as I quote: And to think that I loved this man passionately, to think that I gave him thirty years of my life, to think that twelve times over I carried his child. The addition of a rival to my life was not enough for him. In loving someone else, he burned his past, both morally and materially. He dared to commit such an act of disavowal From this extract, it is evident that Ramatoulaye was not at all happy with her husband. This is because he was the cause of her grief; he abandoned her after all those years of marriage. She was also exasperated due to the fact that not only did he want to get married to a woman, but he also wanted to be a sugar daddy . Therefore, she feels that the marriage was unnecessary. This is confirmed by the quote: Was it madness, weakness, irresistible love? What inner confusion led Modou Fall to marry Binetou? As we can see that Modou caused a lot of pain for poor Ramatoulaye; therefore, succumbing to death, I agree to the statement characters that cause immense pain to another, especially to their consorts, succumb to death. Likewise, in Blood Wedding, we see the character of the protagonist, Leonardo. His death is announced by the Beggar Woman and does not come as a shock due to the actions he had performed. The Effects Of Seaworld On Our Culture Whales in captivity are hurting others as well as themselves; for example, they have been seen and recorded performing acts of self harming, smacking their heads against the sides of the pool repeatedly. Whales in captivity swim in trance like states, forced to perform tricks for food, working endlessly for the pure entertainment of humans. Whales in captivity eat a monotonous diet, meaning it lacks variety. Orcas living in SeaWorld facilities are primarily fed dead herring, as opposed to diets including a variety of different animals and species in the wild. This is not beneficial to their health and as a result these whales bodies react by vomiting constantly (SeaWorld of Hurt). Orcas in captivity commonly attempt biting through the metal bars that divide pools in order to get oral stimulation (BuzzFeed). These whales need help and we are blindsided by the overpowering effect SeaWorld has on our culture. When captive whales interact with humans, their behavior is abnormal. Humans normally do not interact with killer whales personally in the wild, so interaction between trainers and orcas at SeaWorld has been an experimented act for decades. There is no prior research supporting orcas and humans interacting successfully before SeaWorld first opened its doors in 1964, which is why there is so much controversy today. SeaWorld allowed complete interaction with killer whales and other animals prior to the arrival of Tilikum and before there was ever a fatal injury, as a result ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the burdens that the protagonists in each of these texts differ in some key ways, one of the most interesting things that both Woodson and Morrison depicted was a sense of difficulty in coping with these changes, and rather than having any semblance of mastery over their circumstances, these young protagonists would instead project their emotions onto something else as they try to discover what causes their suffering. Later in the text, Pecola finally goes to Junior s home to see the cat, and Junior promptly throws the cat in her face and locks them both in a room (89 90). But as Pecola stays in the sealed room, something odd begins to happen. She looks down at the cat, and the text gives us a description of the cat as black all over, deep silky black, and his eyes, pointing down toward his nose, were bluish green (90). Originally, then, the cat s eyes are described as bluish green until Pecola sees the light hit them in a certain way, then they shift to blue. The text continues, The light made them shine like blue ice. Pecola rubbed the cat s head; he whined, his tongue flicking with pleasure. The blue eyes in the black face held her (90). Notably, the moment that the light changes the eyes of the cat to blue, Pecola begins to show it affection, and the cat begins to show signs of happiness. There is racism in hockey it is just not as clear as other forms of racism. Canada is so welcoming and is a very diverse counrty. Hockey fans are so cruel and reluctant for change in their world. The focus of this paper is on the lack of diversity in hockey. What will be examined is the differences between black and white people, society s perception on hockey, Canada s history with the sport and diversity. The overall question is: is it the sport or is it the people? Some people may argue that Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world especially in sports, but how deeply do Canadians embrace this diversity? Racism in sports occurs because of both individual and team sports. This is main cause of the reported incidents in the media. It is not the sport itself that induces racism it is the organizers and players that bring racism into sports. However, without the involvement of people/society there would be no sport at all. Therefore, it is very important that we make people more aware that there needs to be a notion of fair play (telegraph). Hockey fans are protectionists by nature. The Rational Decision Making Model Essay EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The purpose of this report is to provide feedback on administrative and public policy violation issues in the city of Crestview located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The report analyzes public policy violations, City Council member adjudication, transparency, and leadership issues in the City of Crestview. The report uses various research methods to gather data to help formulate the conclusion and recommendations of the report. The rational decision making model is utilized to make the best decision possible. The rational decision making model is the best known prescriptive model; the model involves several sequential steps: identifying the problem, determining the goals and objectives, identifying and evaluating alternative policies, choosing from the alternatives, recommending actions, implementation, and evaluation (Smith, 2014). The use of this model is justified as it provides structure and sequence to the choices of the decision maker. The model helps ensure key indicators can be fully considered in a logical manner. It is recommended that the administration create new procedures and implement trainings or classes to educate City Council members, employees and other city officials on new public policies as well as the Sunshine Law. These trainings will outline laws, policies and ordinances as well as target times for legislators to move any issue from the systemic agenda to the formal agenda; this policy should allow for research on Crestview s ... • 37. Examples Of Leadership In Animal Farm By George Orwell An Inept Leader: Calamity for a Nation and its People The state of a nation primarily reflects the strength and aptness of its leader; a weak leader submits their nation into an abysmal state, whereas a great one promotes progress. In Orwell s novella, Animal Farm, the animals of inferior intelligence comply with their vehement leader, Napoleon, who initially demonstrates strong qualities as a leader. However, Napoleon s leadership succumbs to corruption as he gradually implements unprincipled authoritarian rules that primarily benefit the pigs at the expense of the working class. Similarly, past leaders have displayed abuse of power for personal gain. Through his accurate incorporation of Czar Nicholas II s traits into Napoleon s disposition, Orwell articulates how negligent leadership jeopardizes a nation and its citizens, such as Turkmenistan under Saparmurad Niyazov s reign. • 38. Henry Thoreau on Civil Disobedience The Statue of Liberty is an American symbol of justice and freedom from oppression, yet in Henry Thoreau s opinion, the U.S. government is completely antithetical. In Thoreau s essay on civil disobedience, he introduces and accepts the motto, That government is best which governs not at all. In his eyes, the government does more harm than good for its people. Underneath his seemingly main idea, Thoreau implies an overall antithesis where he defines who, in his eyes, is allowed to be disobedient. In order to advance this main idea and reinforce this mottos throughout the essay, Thoreau uses metaphors and juxtaposition to strengthen this subtle antithesis found throughout the essay. In his essay, Thoreau uses the extended metaphor of the government as machine to emphasize how government dehumanizes its citizens. He relates the government to a machine in that it is made up of many parts which all must work together for the machine to be successful. If something is broken, one can fix the machine in order to better suit his/her needs. Thoreau introduces this metaphor when he states, men serve the state not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. He begins with the first, military men who serve with their bodies. These men, in most cases, have no free exercise of moral sense serving under the state. Without the use of their moral sense or conscience, Thoreau comes to the conclusion that they can be replaced by objects such as wood and stones and therefore, have ... Ettrich mentioned that to have a better understanding of how Jomini developed his principles of war creating a set of thoughts that have remained relatively unaltered for approximately two centuries, it is necessary to study his life, his intense studies of war, military career, and the circumstances that shaped his tactical and strategic thinking. Jomini as the same way of other military philosophers, tried to articulate his insights about of the art of war presenting his ideas through a list of maxims or as a list of general truths whose application contributes to success in war, they may be legitimately viewed, as the prototype of the modern principles of war . Jomini s maxims are the closest thought to the modern principles of war. Without considering the fact that Jomini never defined his concepts like general principles of war, nor did he provided precise details of the fundamental principles he wrote, these have been adopted for many armies in the world. In chapter six of Peter Paret s Makers of Modern Strategy: From Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age, John Shy mentioned that many of the nineteenth centuries military leaders accepted Jomini s maxims as valid principles. Ettrich recalls that historically, the Jomini s concepts of principles of war were introduced to the United States in 1817 and were used initially at the US Military Academy; these principles are still valid in the US Army doctrine.
