The Leader Of The People By John Steinbeck
Isolated Generation In the short story The Leader of the People John Steinbeck writes about a young
boy named Jody, who lives on an isolated ranch with his parents and a hired worker. Jody s parents are
stern with him and give him orders to take care of the ranch, but Jody wants to explore the world and
live like a normal child. After Jody finds out his grandfather is visiting, he is happy and wants to hear
about the adventurous stories his grandfather tells about the Great Plains. When Grandfather s tales
create a controversy, he tells Jody how the ocean is the end of discovery. In The Leader of the People
Steinbeck uses the ranch, ocean, and Grandfather to symbolically develop the conflict between past
and present. Steinbeck uses the ranch to symbolize isolation from the outside world. Since the ranch is
secluded away from other human activity, the family rarely leaves the ridge top. Steinbeck gives
characterization to the animals to demonstrate how isolated the ranch is; for example, the cat walks in
the direction of the road, but gallop[s] back again (1) and does not try to leave. When Jody s father
comes home, the dog look[s] up the hill toward the cleft in the ridge (2) and stares at the road. Like the
animals, Jody feels isolated because his parents teach him only about responsibilities he has to uphold
for the benefit of the ranch. Since Jody is taught to work hard, he does not get the chance to be around
other children. Although Jody does not have a lot of

Example Of Social Facilitation
One of the oldest Social Psychology theories in the history of the field is Social Facilitation. Social
Facilitation is about how the presence of other people in the environment could affect our goal
directed behavior. The term Facilitation refers to the early observations that an individual s
performance is enhanced because of external factors such as the presence of other people. Social
Facilitation is a phenomenology that causes the behavior of an individual to change in the presence of
other people. Guerin (1993) stated that Social Facilitation exists when in the presence of other people,
an animal s behavior increases or decreases its level of arousal however does not interact with it.
Hence, an individual s performance on a task causes either a positive or negative effect. This can be
seen in many situations such as when one feels uneasy and uncomfortable in front of a many people
and performs worse than usual or when one dances better than others opposed to when dancing alone.
In an even handed context, it is the idea that an individual s performance is being facilitated in the
presence of another individual (Travis, 1925). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Guerin (1993) says that research on Social Facilitation tries to study the inconsistency of human
behavior in a non social environment and inconsistency of human behavior in a social environment.
Social Facilitation is not more concerned on how often this phenomenon happens in real life but on
what responses an individual can provide during this occurrence (Guerin, 1993). The theory of Social
Facilitation concentrates on altered behaviors that arise when an individual performs a task in an alone
setting as opposed to being in the presence of other people. Lastly, Social Facilitation Theory also
deals with how huge its influence extends to an individual s performance in the

What Are Peak Performers
Peak performers are the rare breed that creates the greats in life, whether it be inventions that change a
civilization, creates an unimaginable feat, or moves a company to success. These rare individuals have
been noted by some as aliens, according to In Search of the Secrets of Peak Performers (Estep, 2005).
Peak performers out perform, over achieve, and accomplish the sought after goal, they set. A study by
the Work Family Institute in Virginia has found seven common traits among peak performers that set
them away for the rest of the race. These individuals see their vision and create a roadmap to meet
their target. They have an increased focus and passion for their work that keeps on track. Reflection of
themselves and values they hold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I completely agree with this assessment, as I am a result driven individual! In my opinion, this is due
to my assessments of situations and myself to improve them and have a proven outcome, several refer

weaknesses the self assessment shows that I have created for myself in being results driven. Putting
forth the effort to embark on the compassionate side is essential to me; nevertheless, I stay driven by
the final results, foremost. Sadly, a supporter is the least of the temperaments from my rating, I desire
to continue to create objectives to engage this downfall; however, I have not succeeded. I recognize

The Commander s Chief Of The Chilean Army
KEY LEADERS
2.1 Chile
2.1.1 General Manuel Baquedano Gonzalez
The Commander in Chief of the Chilean Army, Gen. Erasmo Escala, resigned his commission due to
constant arguments with War Minister Rafael Sotomayor. The latter appointed General Manuel
Baquedano Gonzalez, a Peru Bolivian Confederacy war veteran, who had the sympathies and respect
of the soldiers as his successor.
Baquedano was only 15 years old and still at school when the War against the Peru Bolivian
Confederacy began, but he left his studies to join the Army. He participated in the decisive Battle of
Yungay in 1839. His actions motivated his promotion to Lieutenant on the field at the age of 16.
When the war ended, he returned to Chile to complete his formal military ... Show more content on

This maneuver is regarded as the first amphibious disembarkation in history.
Baquedano s military strategy in this war consisted mainly in frontal attack to break the often over
extended enemy lines.
After the Battle of Tacna, his tactics were publically criticized: he chose to frontally attack with 16
battalions and 3 cavalry regiments, an allied force of nearly 10.000 infantry men equipped with thirty
one cannons and machine guns. The Battle was a victory for Chile, but with overwhelming losses that
could have been avoided if he listened to Minister Vergara s suggestion of choosing an envelopment
maneuver.
He was a man of stubborn and obstinate nature; he tolerated no argument once he had taken a
decision. However, he personally directed battles resulting in decisive victories, and he remained
treated as a hero until he died at the age of 74.
2.1.2 Colonel Pedro Lagos
Only an outstanding military mind could be in charge of this assault, so the Commander in Chief
himself gave Colonel Pedro Lagos the responsibility for the operation. Lagos had begun his training in
the Military Academy. During his first years, he proved to be a hard worker and a very good student.
One of his superiors proposed that he would be promoted to second lieutenant, leading to the start of
his military career in November 1850.
Defending national authority, he took part in the revolutions of 1851 and 1859. He also participated in

Describe How To Make A Brownie Research Paper
Brownies are so easy to make and are the best dessert. There is a recipe to make them even better
though. Conversational brownies take dessert to a whole nother level. It s brownie batter on top of
Oreos on top of cookie dough. And it could give you a cavity just thinking about them. Step one for
making them is having all the ingredients. To make these you will need an entire roll of Pillsbury
cookie dough, double stuffed Oreos and brownie batter. You can also make the cookie dough and
brownie batter from scratch but this way is easier and gives you less of a chance of messing up. Step
two is to preheat the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The oven needs to be pretty hot for all the layers
of the brownie to cook. Step three is to put the

My Favorite Room Essay
If I had to choose what my favorite room in my house was, I would say my bedroom. You will be
placed on the south east corner of the room in front of the door. You are in a twenty foot in width by
fifteen foot in length by eight foot in height room. In this essay i will describe the area of my room
without using the actual names of each item. There is one door and one window within the room. In
the middle of the ceiling is a white mechanism with rotating blades that helps cool the air. Each blade
is made of a fibrous material. In the middle of the mechanism is four fixtures that spread out about
four inches away from each other and illuminate the entire room. Small metallic cords hang from the
mechanism that are used to change the speed of the rotating blades and the brightness of the
illuminating fixtures. As you look down at the ground, you can see a mostly grey fabric ... Show more

closer at the doodad you can see wear from nearly constant use. The doodad is used as a place to sit
and relax, or to sit and to do stressful assignments. As you take a look in the middle of the west wall
you can see an apparatus that is five feet wide one foot long and four feet tall. The apparatus is black
with a golden accent, and is made of a fibrous material cut and processed from a large plant that
provides oxygen. The apparatus has six containers that are evenly spaced within the apparatus. On the
left side of the apparatus is a metal wind instrument with a single reed mouthpiece. This instrument is
primarily used in jazz music. The instrument is silver and has a flower like decal on the side. The

Most people assume that workplace diversity is about increasing racial, national, gender, or class
representation in other words, recruiting and retaining more people from traditionally
underrepresented identity groups. Taking this commonly held assumption as a starting point, we set
out six years ago to investigate its link to organizational effectiveness. We soon found that thinking of
diversity simply in terms of identity group representation inhibited effectiveness. Organizations
usually take one of two paths in managing diversity. In the name of equality and fairness, they
encourage (and expect) women and people of color to blend in. Or they set them apart in jobs that
relate specifically to their backgrounds, assigning them, for example, to areas that require them to
interface with clients or customers of the same identity group. African American M.B.A. s often find
themselves marketing products to innercity communities; Hispanics frequently market to Hispanics or
work for Latin American subsidiaries. In those kinds of cases, companies are operating on the
assumption that the main virtue identity groups have to offer is a knowledge of their own people. This
assumption is limited and limiting and detrimental to diversity efforts. What we suggest here is that
diversity goes beyond increasing the number of different identity group affiliations on the payroll to
recognizing that such an effort is merely the first step in managing a diverse workforce for the

Operations for the intervention was designed to mirror implementation strategies employed in public
clinics so as to develop a scalable delivery approach.
The clinics recruited HIV serodiscordant couples through referrals from voluntary counselling and
testing centers, antenatal clinics and ART clinics. Community outreach events were also conducted
and this promoted couples based HIV testing.
The couples were of ≥ 18 years of age. Besides this they were sexually active and were to remain as a
couple for at least one year. When the couples were being enrolled, the HIV negative partners had
never used PrEP before. They also had a normal renal function, were not pregnant or breast feeding
and were not infected with hepatitis B virus. For the HIV positive partners, they were not using ART
at the time of enrollment. If the HIV positive partner had WHO stage III or HIV disease condition that
required immediate need for ART, the couples were excluded.
STUDY PROCEDURE
The couples were to attend study visits together for a period of 24 months whereby a series of couples
based HIV prevention counselling, including condoms use and management of sexually transmitted
infections were delivered.
Participants were required to undergo monthly visits, which included dispensation of 30 days of study

Absorbance Values
Abstract:
Claims were made that manufacturers had improperly labeled protein concentrations on their products.
Concentrations of these three different protein containing liquids, whole milk, soy milk, and a protein
solution were determined using a Bradford dye reagent and a spectrophotometer to measure the
absorbance of each. Absorbance of a set of standard known protein concentrations from a range of
0.125 mg/ml to 2.000 mg/ml were measured using the spectrophotometer at a set wavelength and this
data was plotted. The equation generated from the best fit line of this data was used to determine the
unknown concentrations of the three different samples. These values were then compared to the
protein concentrations obtained from the corresponding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would indicate that either the food labels or the calculated data are incorrect. The data was
dependent on a linear relationship between absorbance and protein concentration. However, the linear
relationship was based on only seven data points, two of which were omitted due to inconsistency, and
was only representative up to 2.000 mg/ml protein concentration. Because the data sample was small
and covered a small range of concentrations, the food label concentrations cannot be determined as
inaccurate. The more likely cause would be that the linearity assumption of the correlation between
the absorbance and the protein concentration is

Estimating Glucose Concentration in Solution
Introduction
Glucose is very important in our daily lives. It gives us energy to carry out all of our activities. Cells
in our bodies need glucose to respire and in the process release the energy we need. Glucose is also a
type of carbohydrate. It has a chemical formula of C6H12O6 and is a monosaccharide reducing sugar
(Kolej Mara Banting Students Handbook for Biology HL Year 1). It is the simplest form of
carbohydrate. In this experiment, sulphuric acid, H2SO4 and potassium permanganate, KMnO4 is
added into glucose with different concentration and the time taken for the purple pink colour of
potassium permanganate solution to change to colourless is recorded. This is because glucose donates
electrons to the permanganate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

disappears. The time and the glucose solution used is recorded. The syringe used for the glucose
solution is rinsed.

We can therefore conclude that the bargaining power of suppliers and bargaining power of buyers are
relatively high in all the 3 countries. Koyo goods are all being manufactured in China now; giving the
suppliers the upper hand. Apart from well established brands, new entrants are also possible
with/without substitute such Cargos and Jeans, therefore increasing the competition for Koyo. ii.
PESTEL of Koyo Jeans (Currents Markets)
From analyzing the 3 current markets of Koyo (Appendix B), we can conclude that Koyo has been
focusing on the Asian market, more specifically Asia Pacific. We have to consider the fact that Koyo
is a fairly new player and therefore has not taken many farfetched risks. Even though it has a market
in France; if we look deeper we can see that it has only one store there. iii. Internal Factors
With the help of the Value Chain (Appendix D), we are able to conclude that Cheung was able to add
value to the company in 3 key regions which in turn increased the profit margin. Quality textile was

 Grid Connected Photovoltaic System with Single stage Buck Boost Inverter Ch.Srinivas Reddy,
Assistant Professor; Ranga Purushotham, Associate Professor; and P.Parthasaradi Reddy, Associate
Professor Guru Nanak Institutions Technical Campus, Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad, India Abstract for
very high voltage gain of a Photo Voltaic system, this paper proposed a buck boost inverter of single
stage. DCM (Discontinuous conduction mode) and MPPT (maximum power point tracking) is
employed to get one power factor. Minimization of switching losses is employed with only two
switches and operated at very high frequency. Easy control capability, optimum size, affordable cost
with high voltage gain made the system employable. AC voltage conversion is achieved along with
boosting of DC voltage of Photo Voltaic system of inverter. Obstacle shadow variations also reduced
by means of having the possibility of reduced series connected modules; this ability is due to the high
voltage gain. Since the proposed design has the two buck boost converter each one operates for only
one half cycle and the Discontinuous conduction mode operates at unit power factor. Simulation
results assure the proposed idea of the single stage interleaved inverter for high voltage gain
applications. Index Terms Single Stage, Buck Boost Inverter, Low Cost, Grid Connected, PV system,

The Theory Of Sociological Imagination
For decades, there have been many questions that sociologists generally ask themselves when
examining a social phenomenon. One well known sociologist is C. Wright Mills. Mills came up with
the concept of sociological imagination. It is used to describe the ability of individuals to think away
from routines that they are used to in everyday life and look at them from an entirely new perspective.
Using this concept, mills applied it to asking and answering imaginative thoughts of sociological
questions. Mills came up with three questions that many thinkers have consistently asked in their
investigations of humanity and society. The three questions are what is the structure of this particular
society as a whole? , where does this society stand in human history? , and what varieties of men and
women now prevail in this society and in this period?. Moreover, one social phenomenon that can
explain how these questions help focus one s social imagination is crime. C. Wright Mills first
question is what is the structure of this particular society as a whole?. In asking this question, Mills
wanted to know how crime is understood in society and how is it an essential components that is inter
related in society?. In society, crime is seen as any actions that violates the laws established by a
political authority. However, according to the authors of the book introduction to sociology states that
sociologists studying crime and deviance in the interactionist tradition focus on deviance

Changing Voting Restrictions
Have you ever felt like the government is trying to take away your voice? Well if you allow them to
take away your right to vote with new restrictions on who can or can not vote then that is what they
are basically doing. It would be taking away the already small voice you have in your governmental
system. If they were to change the requirements then it would cause mass confusion of election day, it
would be erasing what some people fought for to earn the right to vote, and the voting rate is low
enough.
One of the main reasons why we should not change the voting restrictions it that it would cause mass
confusion when it came to election day. Election day is already heptic enough when it comes time for
the american people to vote for their next commander in chief. It would just add on to the craiz and
confusion if people went to go vote and was not allowed to because of a new type of restriction out
that they did not know of. For example, during the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald
Trump there were 14 different states that had new voting laws. One of the 14 states that changed their
voting laws was Connecticut. When election day came around people that were working the polls in
Connecticut was improperly insisting for voters to show photo ... Show more content on

time when certain people did not have the right to vote. ( History of Voting Rights ) The last reason
why we should not have any more voting restrictions is because we already have a low voting rate as
it is. If we had any more requirements than the voting rate would be even

Whilst in Paris, Reinhardt collaborated with numerous American jazz musicians including
saxophonists Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins, and cornetist Rex Stewart. Due to the prevalence
of Jazz in America, it could be argued that future generations of jazz guitarists were influenced more
by Charles Christian and other American jazz guitarists than Django, however, Reinhardt s influence
was transmitted via these musicians with Mary Osborne recalling a concert in Bismark during the late
1930 s when Christian performed a note for note version of Reinhardt s recording of St. Louis Blues .9
This was also the case with Les Paul who learnt Django s solos by listening to his recordings and went
on to perform them across America. There are a myriad of other celebrated guitar players who have
cited Reinhardt as an inspiration for their music including Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, B.B. King,
John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Vernon Reid, Andres Segovia and guitar legend Jeff Beck who
claimed that, after listing through all of his own inspirations, of course, it all started with Django. 10
The influence of Django Reinhardt has also been transmitted through popular culture with Django s
music being used in a variety of Woody Allen movies such Sweet and Lowdown and Stardust
Memories as well as more mainstream films such as The Matrix, The Aviator and Chocolat. This has

Describe The Process Of Doing Squats
The process of doing squats involves a process of using muscles in bottom half of the torso. There are
primary muscles in doing squats which are the gluteus maximus, quadriceps, and hamstrings. The
gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the body and covers each buttock. The origin of this muscle
is the sacrum, coccyx, and ilium. The insertion is the posterior surface of femur and fascia of the thigh
which helps to extend the thigh at the hip. The gluteus maximus helps to straighten the limb at the hip
when a person walks, runs, climbs, or squats. In the quadriceps femoris group there are four muscles

Flunking High School Students
Flunking high school students can be helpful in getting them motivated and lead to success in their
education. The majority of students who have lack of focus and many distractions deserve to fail if
they don t change their attitude. It is not going to be easy for students to be successful in their
education. Somes students need to try hard to get to their goals. High School students have to pass
through failure to have the motivation to do better in school. If more students go through the teacher s
threats of failing, the student s will want to put in the effort to able to pass their classes. The only way
students can turn their worthless time of education is to getting the help of the parents and teachers to
able to succeed on being better students in school. More high school teachers should start using the
threat of failing students so that the educational industry get lower rates of dropouts and higher rates
of graduating.
First, Failing High School students is a good way to have them get that fear, but not only that it can
help them value their education and work harder for a passing grade. For instance, Thomas R. Hoerr
states, We create opportunities for success for those students and help them see what they can achieve
(41). Students who fool around where they don t pay attention but want to pass by not doing no work
effort, they will change their attitude by getting the failing grade with a strict teacher that will actually
give F s. When a student flunks a grade it won t help them succeed, but they will give up in school or
feel bad about themselves. Taking a class is not ideal, because it would cost them time, so they will
have to take summer school in order to graduate or move to the next level. However, failing can teach
high school students to value their education, especially as failing can prevent them from graduating
and pursuing their goals, so they learn the value of education and work ethic. School should be their
number one priority because if they want to graduate high school they need to focus in order to
receive a diploma. Having fear because of failing a class to able to graduate or pass to next grade
should leave all the lack of effort behind and start working hard to advance to next

Immigration Policy Historically Has Been Influenced By Our...
Immigration policy historically has been influenced by our country s fear to uphold traditional
American culture often rooted in a sense of anti immigration and xenophobia. We perpetuate this by
allowing the criminalization of communities of color, mainly with the large Latino population in the
U.S. A large portion of the immigrants who arrive in the country are fleeing dangerous homelands
pitted with economic and political turmoil. Their situation is worsened by our country s broken
immigration system where families are separated, immigrants are exploited as work labor,
discrimination is rampant, and the pathways to citizenship are convoluted at best. We as a country
need to uphold our values of freedom and equality when immigrants come to our country and reform
our immigration system to be more reflective of this. In light of the recent occurrences with ISIS
related terrorism committed by foreigners such as the San Bernardino shooting or the Orlando night
club shooting, there has been some resistance from the country in regards to immigration. Additionally
the age old worry of job security also heightens our sensitivity towards immigrants with jobs, as they
compete for them. Despite this, Clinton s Immigration policy seeks to transform the U.S. into a
version of our former selves with family at the heart of her immigration policies. In regards to this,

In this paper, we aim to fill what we, as researchers and teachers in qualitative psychology, have
experienced as a current gap: the absence of a paper which adequately outlines the theory, application,
and evaluation of thematic analysis, and one which does so in a way accessible to students and those
not particularly familiar with qualitative research. 1 That is, we aim to write a paper which will be
useful as both a teaching and research tool in qualitative psychology. Therefore, in this paper we
discuss theory and method for thematic analysis, and clarify the similarities and differences between
different approaches that share features in common with a thematic approach.
Qualitative approaches are incredibly diverse, complex and nuanced (Holloway Todres, 2003), and
thematic analysis should be seen as a foundational method for qualitative analysis. It is the first
qualitative method of analysis that researchers should learn, as it provides core skills that will be
useful for conducting many other forms of qualitative analysis. Indeed, Holloway and Todres (2003:
347) identify thematizing meanings as one of a few shared generic skills across qualitative analysis.2
For this reason, Boyatzis (1998) characterises it not as a specific method but as a tool to use across
different methods. Similarly, Ryan and Bernard (2000) locate thematic coding as a process performed
within „major‟ analytic traditions (such as grounded theory), rather than a

The Battle Of Fredericksburg During The Civil War
The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought towards the beginning of the American Civil War that
spanned over the course of four years, April 1861 April 1865 and consisted of 50 major battles and
thousands of minor battles. The Battle of Fredericksburg lasted exactly five days, December 11 15,
1862. Its location was centered on Fredericksburg, VA and surrounding areas along the Rappahannock
River including Falmouth, Marye s Heights, Stafford Heights, Prospect Hill, and Hamilton s Crossing
(Yandoh, 2001). The Federal Union and Confederates had the same goal. To preserve their way of life,
but that s where the similarities stopped. Both sides wanted a different way of life preserved. The
Confederates goal was to gain independence from the politically oppressive North and to establish an
independent nation that allowed slavery (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Federal Union s initial goal was
to restore the Union. But, its goal changed when it became obvious they would lose the war. The
Union decided to reunite states under a banner in which slavery was no longer acceptable or tolerated.
The war from beginning to end would be a noble crusade for democracy for all people, not just in
America, but throughout the world (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Fredericksburg Campaign and the
Battle of Fredericksburg are the same objective in this case: to capture the town of Fredericksburg.

study in every society and civilization throughout history. Medicine is constantly improving and being
innovated, making the treatment of various diseases and ailments easier and easier. However, in the
early millennia, the rate at which medicine was being improved and innovated was not as rapid as it is
today. The physicians and doctors of the time were not as skilled as the medical professionals in the
present era. Lacking the technology and knowledge people have today, the people in earlier
civilizations were faced with many obstacles. Among those obstacles were not only technological
obstacles, but social obstacles as well. In some cases, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the planets did not align correctly, the four humours would become unbalanced and lead to an
ailment. The affected would then proceed to seek out ways to return the balance. Many doctors of the
Medieval Era referred to a Zodiac Chart to determine the positions of the planets, which helped them
determine whether or not to conduct blood letting. The four humors were associated with an element:
blood air, phlegm water, black bile earth, and yellow bile fire ( Medieval Medicine ). When they
would become unbalanced, medieval doctors would turn to various methods to attempt to rebalance
them. A common method was blood letting, which involved the use of numerous leeches. However,
they were not reluctant in using knives and other sharp objects to get the job done (Trueman). The
mindset behind this process was that blood letting allowed for all the bad blood to leave the body.
Conventionally, leeches were used to extract small amounts of blood, while knives were used to
extract large amounts. Another commonly scrutinized bodily fluid was urine, which was examined
quite frequently. They mostly focused on the color of the urine sample and made conclusions
depending on what the color was. The differences in color was a direct result of humoral imbalances
(Evans). Not only could doctors diagnose a patient s ailment by analyzing one s urine in a practice
called uroscopy, but they could also detect pregnancy. Clear urine would signify virginity, while colors
close to black, and a cloudy urine would signify sexual impurity, thus possible pregnancy (Evans). All
in all, while these fantastical influences had no scientific, concrete backings, many believed these
various concepts, which would later indirectly stunt the growing influence concrete science would
have on medicine. Luckily, this would not discourage the medieval scientists who were hungry for
knowledge and

Brittle Rupture of Glass Plates
Guirguis Rezk SID 199991603 Objectives:
  To understand mechanisms of the fracture of brittle materials (in this case, glass) To recognize
the variations in deformation and failure mechanisms which occur with a difference in flaw size, (i.e.
between scratched and unscratched samples) Defining flaw sizes in glass plates by employing linear
elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) Utilizing the Weibull statistics approach in predicting probable
failure in brittle materials.
 
Testing Procedure:
1. The thickness (t) and width (w) of the rectangular glass sample is measured. The first glass slide is
placed in the Instron 3 point bending apparatus with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This tension is produced by the bending moment of the load. For this reason the plates were placed
with scratches facing downwards so that the procedure could test the effect of flaw size on fracture
stress. Otherwise the experiment would have probably shown little difference between scratched and
unscratched samples. The scratched samples also showed consistent directions in that they were nearly
always perpendicular, this was due to linkage of cracks. Whereas for unscratched glass, the crack will
propagate according to the local shape and direction of the defect. The three point bending test is used
for brittle materials only for two reasons. The first is because brittle materials cannot be tested with
conventional uniaxial tension tests because of early failure at the grips. The second reason is that
LEFM can only be applied in bending tests to brittle materials because yielding occurs around the
same point as failure, so failure stresses can be used to calculate normal tensions in the beam using σ
= Mc/I. That is the stress versus strain diagrams remain nearly linear up until failure. Fracture
toughness is the ability of a material to withstand brittle fracture in the presence of a crack or flaw.
The equation as mentioned earlier is derived from linear elastic fracture mechanics and stipulates that
crack length is inversely proportional to fracture stress. The

Options for Biological Terrorism Attacks and...
Bioterrorism is not a distant threat that may concern us twenty years from now. It has occurred
throughout history and continues to this day. As recently as 1996, a man from Ohio with connections
to an extremist group was able to obtain Bubonic Plague cultures through the US Postal Service
(Danzig Berkowsky, 1997). In the last month, several people within the United States have become
infected with anthrax. As we stand right now, America is unprepared for a large scale attack with
biological weapons, and as we continue with our War on Terrorism, the likelihood of such an attack is
increasing every day. Terrorists can use three major methods to most effectively distribute a biological
agent in the US: 1) air dispersal to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Several methods have been suggested for the massive airborne release of biological agents. Crop
dusters, the most likely, are designed to release high concentrations of pesticides over large areas. This
form of pesticide distribution exactly parallels the optimal methods for dispersal of a harmful
biological agent. Stationary sprayers have also been implicated as a potential source of biological
attack and could include backpack sprayers, agricultural sprayers, or even perfume atomizers (Danzig
Berkowsky, 1997). Airborne schemes of distribution are virtually uncontrollable by government
agencies. Crop dusters are available to anyone with a pilot s license and backpack sprayers can be
found in most hardware stores. The consequence of the recent anthrax attacks through the US Postal
service pale in comparison to the potential consequences of such an airborne attack.
Although anthrax is not contagious, there are numerous potential airborne agents that are. Once a
contagious infecting agent, such as smallpox or the plague, enters a population, it can spread very
quickly from one person to the next. With the speed and popularity of air travel, an infection can
spread across the country or even the world, in a matter of days. The contamination of one person with
a highly contagious disease in an airport is all

A Short Note On The Uses And Functions Of A Server On...
BIND in Linux BIND (Berkeley Internet name domain) is the most commonly used DNS (domain
name system) server on the Internet, and it is the defacto standard on Linux and other Unix like
operating systems. DNS is the name resolution (i.e., translation) system that permits users to locate
computers on a network by using their domain name rather than their IP addresses. IP addresses,
which form the basis of addressing on the Internet and most other networks, each can contain as many
as 12 digits under the currently mainstream IPv4 addressing scheme (or as many as 32 hexadecimal
digits under the next generation IPv6 addressing scheme). It can be difficult for humans to remember
such addresses, but it is relatively easy for them to remember domain names, which typically use
alphabetic characters and consist of words, abbreviations or acronyms. BIND provides an openly
redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the DNS, including a DNS
server (called named), a DNS resolver library and tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS
server. The resolver library is a collection of functions written in the C programming language that
provides hostname to IP address and IP address to hostname lookup services.BIND was originally
written at University of California at Berkeley (UCB) as a graduate student project under a grant from
the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA). The acronym BIND
originally stood for Berkeley Internet

Common Themes In Paul s Case
Paul s Unexpected Consequences After reading Paul s Case which was written by Willa Cather and its
movie, which was directed by Lamont Johnson, there was a common theme between both the movie
and the book. This common theme dealt with wealth and how it affected our main character, Paul. It
affected him in unexpected ways. These ways were both positive and negative and even had a long
term effect on him. The common theme was how the pursuit of wealth can have unexpected
consequences that are both positive, negative and could even last a lifetime. While Paul was seeking
wealth either through his part time job at the theater as an usher or by taking his father s check it led to
an unexpectedly positive outcome. This was that Paul had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This quote allows the reader to see that Paul s new life was quickly coming to an end and that he was
going to be forced to go back to his normal life if he was not able to come up with a plan quickly. The
possibility of having to go back to live with his father in his normal life may have clouded Paul s idea
of reality. Even though Paul unexpectedly experienced both positive and negative consequences on his
quest for wealth, he also experienced a long term effect when he decided to take his own life. Paul
made his decision when he realized that he didn t want to have to go back living in his small town and
having to work at the theater. The idea of Paul ending his life was first brought to the viewer s
attention when the camera zoomed into Paul s bag as he got off the train. The bag is left on the train
which made the viewer start to wonder why Paul is leaving it. It now causes the viewer to question
what is going through Paul s mind and it also builds suspense. Another prime example that helped
drive home the idea that Paul was about the make a decision that would have a long lasting impact on
him was when he was getting a ride home from the train station from a horse and buggy. Instead of
having the horse and buggy drop him off at his house, he tells the driver that he could drop him off in
the middle of the woods and that

  • 2. The Leader Of The People By John Steinbeck Isolated Generation In the short story The Leader of the People John Steinbeck writes about a young boy named Jody, who lives on an isolated ranch with his parents and a hired worker. Jody s parents are stern with him and give him orders to take care of the ranch, but Jody wants to explore the world and live like a normal child. After Jody finds out his grandfather is visiting, he is happy and wants to hear about the adventurous stories his grandfather tells about the Great Plains. When Grandfather s tales create a controversy, he tells Jody how the ocean is the end of discovery. In The Leader of the People Steinbeck uses the ranch, ocean, and Grandfather to symbolically develop the conflict between past and present. Steinbeck uses the ranch to symbolize isolation from the outside world. Since the ranch is secluded away from other human activity, the family rarely leaves the ridge top. Steinbeck gives characterization to the animals to demonstrate how isolated the ranch is; for example, the cat walks in the direction of the road, but gallop[s] back again (1) and does not try to leave. When Jody s father comes home, the dog look[s] up the hill toward the cleft in the ridge (2) and stares at the road. Like the animals, Jody feels isolated because his parents teach him only about responsibilities he has to uphold for the benefit of the ranch. Since Jody is taught to work hard, he does not get the chance to be around other children. Although Jody does not have a lot of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Example Of Social Facilitation One of the oldest Social Psychology theories in the history of the field is Social Facilitation. Social Facilitation is about how the presence of other people in the environment could affect our goal directed behavior. The term Facilitation refers to the early observations that an individual s performance is enhanced because of external factors such as the presence of other people. Social Facilitation is a phenomenology that causes the behavior of an individual to change in the presence of other people. Guerin (1993) stated that Social Facilitation exists when in the presence of other people, an animal s behavior increases or decreases its level of arousal however does not interact with it. Hence, an individual s performance on a task causes either a positive or negative effect. This can be seen in many situations such as when one feels uneasy and uncomfortable in front of a many people and performs worse than usual or when one dances better than others opposed to when dancing alone. In an even handed context, it is the idea that an individual s performance is being facilitated in the presence of another individual (Travis, 1925). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social Facilitation is not more concerned on how often this phenomenon happens in real life but on what responses an individual can provide during this occurrence (Guerin, 1993). The theory of Social Facilitation concentrates on altered behaviors that arise when an individual performs a task in an alone setting as opposed to being in the presence of other people. Erasmo Escala, resigned his commission due to constant arguments with War Minister Rafael Sotomayor. The latter appointed General Manuel Baquedano Gonzalez, a Peru Bolivian Confederacy war veteran, who had the sympathies and respect of the soldiers as his successor. Baquedano was only 15 years old and still at school when the War against the Peru Bolivian Confederacy began, but he left his studies to join the Army. He participated in the decisive Battle of Yungay in 1839. His actions motivated his promotion to Lieutenant on the field at the age of 16. Baquedano s military strategy in this war consisted mainly in frontal attack to break the often over extended enemy lines. After the Battle of Tacna, his tactics were publically criticized: he chose to frontally attack with 16 battalions and 3 cavalry regiments, an allied force of nearly 10.000 infantry men equipped with thirty one cannons and machine guns. The Battle was a victory for Chile, but with overwhelming losses that could have been avoided if he listened to Minister Vergara s suggestion of choosing an envelopment maneuver. He was a man of stubborn and obstinate nature; he tolerated no argument once he had taken a decision. However, he personally directed battles resulting in decisive victories, and he remained treated as a hero until he died at the age of 74. 2.1.2 Colonel Pedro Lagos Only an outstanding military mind could be in charge of this assault, so the Commander in Chief himself gave Colonel Pedro Lagos the responsibility for the operation. Lagos had begun his training in the Military Academy. During his first years, he proved to be a hard worker and a very good student. One of his superiors proposed that he would be promoted to second lieutenant, leading to the start of his military career in November 1850.

Most people assume that workplace diversity is about increasing racial, national, gender, or class representation in other words, recruiting and retaining more people from traditionally underrepresented identity groups. Taking this commonly held assumption as a starting point, we set out six years ago to investigate its link to organizational effectiveness. We soon found that thinking of diversity simply in terms of identity group representation inhibited effectiveness. Organizations usually take one of two paths in managing diversity. In the name of equality and fairness, they encourage (and expect) women and people of color to blend in. Or they set them apart in jobs that relate specifically to their backgrounds, assigning them, for example, to areas that require them to interface with clients or customers of the same identity group. African American M.B.A. s often find themselves marketing products to innercity communities; Hispanics frequently market to Hispanics or work for Latin American subsidiaries. In those kinds of cases, companies are operating on the assumption that the main virtue identity groups have to offer is a knowledge of their own people. This assumption is limited and limiting and detrimental to diversity efforts. What we suggest here is that diversity goes beyond increasing the number of different identity group affiliations on the payroll to recognizing that such an effort is merely the first step in managing a diverse workforce for the ... Concentrations of these three different protein containing liquids, whole milk, soy milk, and a protein solution were determined using a Bradford dye reagent and a spectrophotometer to measure the absorbance of each. Absorbance of a set of standard known protein concentrations from a range of 0.125 mg/ml to 2.000 mg/ml were measured using the spectrophotometer at a set wavelength and this data was plotted. The equation generated from the best fit line of this data was used to determine the unknown concentrations of the three different samples. Grid Connected Photovoltaic System With Single Stage Buck...  Grid Connected Photovoltaic System with Single stage Buck Boost Inverter Ch.Srinivas Reddy, Assistant Professor; Ranga Purushotham, Associate Professor; and P.Parthasaradi Reddy, Associate Professor Guru Nanak Institutions Technical Campus, Ibrahimpatnam, Hyderabad, India Abstract for very high voltage gain of a Photo Voltaic system, this paper proposed a buck boost inverter of single stage. DCM (Discontinuous conduction mode) and MPPT (maximum power point tracking) is employed to get one power factor. Minimization of switching losses is employed with only two switches and operated at very high frequency. Easy control capability, optimum size, affordable cost with high voltage gain made the system employable. AC voltage conversion is achieved along with boosting of DC voltage of Photo Voltaic system of inverter. Obstacle shadow variations also reduced by means of having the possibility of reduced series connected modules; this ability is due to the high voltage gain. Since the proposed design has the two buck boost converter each one operates for only one half cycle and the Discontinuous conduction mode operates at unit power factor. Simulation results assure the proposed idea of the single stage interleaved inverter for high voltage gain applications. It is used to describe the ability of individuals to think away from routines that they are used to in everyday life and look at them from an entirely new perspective. Using this concept, mills applied it to asking and answering imaginative thoughts of sociological questions. Mills came up with three questions that many thinkers have consistently asked in their investigations of humanity and society. The three questions are what is the structure of this particular society as a whole? , where does this society stand in human history? , and what varieties of men and women now prevail in this society and in this period?. In this paper, we aim to fill what we, as researchers and teachers in qualitative psychology, have experienced as a current gap: the absence of a paper which adequately outlines the theory, application, and evaluation of thematic analysis, and one which does so in a way accessible to students and those not particularly familiar with qualitative research. 1 That is, we aim to write a paper which will be useful as both a teaching and research tool in qualitative psychology. Therefore, in this paper we discuss theory and method for thematic analysis, and clarify the similarities and differences between different approaches that share features in common with a thematic approach. Qualitative approaches are incredibly diverse, complex and nuanced (Holloway Todres, 2003), and thematic analysis should be seen as a foundational method for qualitative analysis. It is the first qualitative method of analysis that researchers should learn, as it provides core skills that will be useful for conducting many other forms of qualitative analysis. Indeed, Holloway and Todres (2003: 347) identify thematizing meanings as one of a few shared generic skills across qualitative analysis.2 For this reason, Boyatzis (1998) characterises it not as a specific method but as a tool to use across different methods. Similarly, Ryan and Bernard (2000) locate thematic coding as a process performed within „major‟ analytic traditions (such as grounded theory), rather than a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Battle Of Fredericksburg During The Civil War The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought towards the beginning of the American Civil War that spanned over the course of four years, April 1861 April 1865 and consisted of 50 major battles and thousands of minor battles. The Battle of Fredericksburg lasted exactly five days, December 11 15, 1862. Its location was centered on Fredericksburg, VA and surrounding areas along the Rappahannock River including Falmouth, Marye s Heights, Stafford Heights, Prospect Hill, and Hamilton s Crossing (Yandoh, 2001). The Federal Union and Confederates had the same goal. To preserve their way of life, but that s where the similarities stopped. Both sides wanted a different way of life preserved. The Confederates goal was to gain independence from the politically oppressive North and to establish an independent nation that allowed slavery (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Federal Union s initial goal was to restore the Union. But, its goal changed when it became obvious they would lose the war. The Union decided to reunite states under a banner in which slavery was no longer acceptable or tolerated. The war from beginning to end would be a noble crusade for democracy for all people, not just in America, but throughout the world (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Fredericksburg Campaign and the Battle of Fredericksburg are the same objective in this case: to capture the town of Fredericksburg. Leading up to the battle, President Abraham Lincoln was confident he was losing support due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Medicine In The Medieval Era The study of medicine stretches as far back as can be remembered and has been an integral area of study in every society and civilization throughout history. Medicine is constantly improving and being innovated, making the treatment of various diseases and ailments easier and easier. However, in the early millennia, the rate at which medicine was being improved and innovated was not as rapid as it is today. The physicians and doctors of the time were not as skilled as the medical professionals in the present era. Lacking the technology and knowledge people have today, the people in earlier civilizations were faced with many obstacles. Among those obstacles were not only technological obstacles, but social obstacles as well. In some cases, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the planets did not align correctly, the four humours would become unbalanced and lead to an ailment. The affected would then proceed to seek out ways to return the balance. Many doctors of the Medieval Era referred to a Zodiac Chart to determine the positions of the planets, which helped them determine whether or not to conduct blood letting. The four humors were associated with an element: blood air, phlegm water, black bile earth, and yellow bile fire ( Medieval Medicine ). When they would become unbalanced, medieval doctors would turn to various methods to attempt to rebalance them. A common method was blood letting, which involved the use of numerous leeches. However, they were not reluctant in using knives and other sharp objects to get the job done (Trueman). The mindset behind this process was that blood letting allowed for all the bad blood to leave the body. Conventionally, leeches were used to extract small amounts of blood, while knives were used to extract large amounts. Another commonly scrutinized bodily fluid was urine, which was examined quite frequently. They mostly focused on the color of the urine sample and made conclusions depending on what the color was. The differences in color was a direct result of humoral imbalances (Evans). Not only could doctors diagnose a patient s ailment by analyzing one s urine in a practice called uroscopy, but they could also detect pregnancy. Clear urine would signify virginity, while colors close to black, and a cloudy urine would signify sexual impurity, thus possible pregnancy (Evans). All in all, while these fantastical influences had no scientific, concrete backings, many believed these various concepts, which would later indirectly stunt the growing influence concrete science would have on medicine. Luckily, this would not discourage the medieval scientists who were hungry for knowledge and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Materials Lab Report MECH3362: Materials II Laboratory Report Brittle Rupture of Glass Plates Guirguis Rezk SID 199991603 Objectives:   To understand mechanisms of the fracture of brittle materials (in this case, glass) To recognize the variations in deformation and failure mechanisms which occur with a difference in flaw size, (i.e. between scratched and unscratched samples) Defining flaw sizes in glass plates by employing linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) Utilizing the Weibull statistics approach in predicting probable failure in brittle materials.   Testing Procedure: 1. The thickness (t) and width (w) of the rectangular glass sample is measured. The first glass slide is placed in the Instron 3 point bending apparatus with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This tension is produced by the bending moment of the load. For this reason the plates were placed with scratches facing downwards so that the procedure could test the effect of flaw size on fracture stress. Otherwise the experiment would have probably shown little difference between scratched and unscratched samples. The scratched samples also showed consistent directions in that they were nearly always perpendicular, this was due to linkage of cracks. Whereas for unscratched glass, the crack will propagate according to the local shape and direction of the defect. The three point bending test is used for brittle materials only for two reasons. The first is because brittle materials cannot be tested with conventional uniaxial tension tests because of early failure at the grips. The second reason is that LEFM can only be applied in bending tests to brittle materials because yielding occurs around the same point as failure, so failure stresses can be used to calculate normal tensions in the beam using σ = Mc/I. That is the stress versus strain diagrams remain nearly linear up until failure. Fracture toughness is the ability of a material to withstand brittle fracture in the presence of a crack or flaw. The equation as mentioned earlier is derived from linear elastic fracture mechanics and stipulates that crack length is inversely proportional to fracture stress. The ... • 43. Options for Biological Terrorism Attacks and... Bioterrorism is not a distant threat that may concern us twenty years from now. It has occurred throughout history and continues to this day. As recently as 1996, a man from Ohio with connections to an extremist group was able to obtain Bubonic Plague cultures through the US Postal Service (Danzig Berkowsky, 1997). In the last month, several people within the United States have become infected with anthrax. As we stand right now, America is unprepared for a large scale attack with biological weapons, and as we continue with our War on Terrorism, the likelihood of such an attack is increasing every day. Terrorists can use three major methods to most effectively distribute a biological agent in the US: 1) air dispersal to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Several methods have been suggested for the massive airborne release of biological agents. Crop dusters, the most likely, are designed to release high concentrations of pesticides over large areas. This form of pesticide distribution exactly parallels the optimal methods for dispersal of a harmful biological agent. Stationary sprayers have also been implicated as a potential source of biological attack and could include backpack sprayers, agricultural sprayers, or even perfume atomizers (Danzig Berkowsky, 1997). Airborne schemes of distribution are virtually uncontrollable by government agencies. Crop dusters are available to anyone with a pilot s license and backpack sprayers can be found in most hardware stores. The consequence of the recent anthrax attacks through the US Postal service pale in comparison to the potential consequences of such an airborne attack. Although anthrax is not contagious, there are numerous potential airborne agents that are. Once a contagious infecting agent, such as smallpox or the plague, enters a population, it can spread very quickly from one person to the next. With the speed and popularity of air travel, an infection can spread across the country or even the world, in a matter of days. The contamination of one person with a highly contagious disease in an airport is all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. A Short Note On The Uses And Functions Of A Server On... BIND in Linux BIND (Berkeley Internet name domain) is the most commonly used DNS (domain name system) server on the Internet, and it is the defacto standard on Linux and other Unix like operating systems. DNS is the name resolution (i.e., translation) system that permits users to locate computers on a network by using their domain name rather than their IP addresses. IP addresses, which form the basis of addressing on the Internet and most other networks, each can contain as many as 12 digits under the currently mainstream IPv4 addressing scheme (or as many as 32 hexadecimal digits under the next generation IPv6 addressing scheme). It can be difficult for humans to remember such addresses, but it is relatively easy for them to remember domain names, which typically use alphabetic characters and consist of words, abbreviations or acronyms. BIND provides an openly redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the DNS, including a DNS server (called named), a DNS resolver library and tools for verifying the proper operation of the DNS server. The resolver library is a collection of functions written in the C programming language that provides hostname to IP address and IP address to hostname lookup services.BIND was originally written at University of California at Berkeley (UCB) as a graduate student project under a grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA). • 51. Common Themes In Paul s Case Paul s Unexpected Consequences After reading Paul s Case which was written by Willa Cather and its movie, which was directed by Lamont Johnson, there was a common theme between both the movie and the book. This common theme dealt with wealth and how it affected our main character, Paul. It affected him in unexpected ways. These ways were both positive and negative and even had a long term effect on him. The common theme was how the pursuit of wealth can have unexpected consequences that are both positive, negative and could even last a lifetime. While Paul was seeking wealth either through his part time job at the theater as an usher or by taking his father s check it led to an unexpectedly positive outcome. This was that Paul had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This quote allows the reader to see that Paul s new life was quickly coming to an end and that he was going to be forced to go back to his normal life if he was not able to come up with a plan quickly. The possibility of having to go back to live with his father in his normal life may have clouded Paul s idea of reality. Even though Paul unexpectedly experienced both positive and negative consequences on his quest for wealth, he also experienced a long term effect when he decided to take his own life. Paul made his decision when he realized that he didn t want to have to go back living in his small town and having to work at the theater. The idea of Paul ending his life was first brought to the viewer s attention when the camera zoomed into Paul s bag as he got off the train. The bag is left on the train which made the viewer start to wonder why Paul is leaving it. It now causes the viewer to question what is going through Paul s mind and it also builds suspense. Another prime example that helped drive home the idea that Paul was about the make a decision that would have a long lasting impact on him was when he was getting a ride home from the train station from a horse and buggy. Instead of having the horse and buggy drop him off at his house, he tells the driver that he could drop him off in the middle of the woods and that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
