State wise Area, Production and Productivity of
Banana in India (2006-07)
With total annual production of 16.91 million tones from
490.70 thousand ha., with national average of 33.5 T/ha. Maharashtra
ranks first in production with 60 T/ha. Banana contributes 37% to
total fruit production in India.

Banana Growing Districts in A.P
East and West Godavari, Guntur, Vizianagaram,
Cuddapah, Kurnool Kirshna and some parts of warangal
The area brought under banana cultivation has been increasing.
But there was no significant change in productivity. The area under
banana crop increased to about 1,950 hectares in 2002-03 and 2003-04,
but the productivity remained at 23 tones a hectare. Though the area
under banana cultivation has come down by 400 hectares in 2004-05
and 2005-06, the productivity has nearly doubled because farmers are
using tissue-culture plant material. Horticulture Officer (Technical) M.
Ravi Prakash Rao says that there are banana gardens where tissue-
culture plant material and micro-irrigation are being used with a

 Tissue culture technology is based on the theory of
totipotency
 The major components of the technology include choice
of explants (excised part of plant), growing of explants
on a defined medium in glass vessel (in vitro),
elimination and or prevention of diseases, providing
appropriate cultural environment and transfer of plantlets
from glass vessel to natural environment (hardening).
 RESEARCH& DEVELOPMENT:
 Increased resistence to all types of pest
 Expansion of lab to produce GM plants in other
crops.

Provides employment generation of 6000 man days (300*20).
Earlier the entire material was imported from Maharashtra
but by the establishment of our enterprise the entire
imports are substituted as 2tn are imported every year.
We are utilizing the raw material from local area, also other
resources like water, power etc from the local
municipalities.
By the establishment of our industry the
area gets well linked with proper Vijayawada city
so that there would be effective communication
As we are employing 20 people we also
develop the area by constructing quarters for our
employees, health institutes for regular check up
etc.
