- An additional chosen photo seen as a better fit that could be manipulated
- Details on the final darker design combining elements from previous versions to better fit the magazine's style
The document summarizes the process of creating a magazine front cover and contents pages from initial planning through multiple revisions of layouts, images, and text. It describes adding photos from a shoot and advertising content. Additional articles were included using other photos. The social media page and photos were also edited to connect to readers and enhance natural features while maintaining a realistic look.
The document describes the design process for a music magazine cover and contents pages. It summarizes:
- The magazine is titled "NE" to represent new edge music and feature upcoming artists, music, and events.
- The cover features a model wearing glasses with a fierce expression to convey power and attitude, fitting the magazine's style. Additional images were edited into the model's sunglasses.
- The contents pages are organized into columns with varied fonts, colors, and boxed text sections to attract different audiences. Images of artists are included to appeal to both male and female readers.
- An exclusive feature on the cover model continues across pages to keep readers engaged with her story throughout the magazine.
The document discusses the design choices for a music magazine product. It focuses on font choices for the masthead and cover to appear masculine despite a feminine cover image. Images of a model and festivalgoers are used to represent the target audience of young music fans. The cover aims to clearly communicate the genre as mainstream music while avoiding too much distracting text from the central image.
The document provides an evaluation of the ways in which the media product uses, develops, or challenges conventions of real media products.
The front cover layout follows conventions with a main image and general layout, but uses polaroid images which adds a unique element. The contents page layout does not follow structured conventions and lacks boxes, but uses a band index feature commonly seen. The double page spread similarly follows conventions with a main image, initial, title, and logo/page number, but again uses polaroid images which is atypical.
Costumes and props were chosen to match an indie target audience. The location of a studio and inspiration from artists like Florence and the Machine were used to develop the proposed artist and photosh
The document discusses the process of creating a magazine cover and layout. It describes how the author was inspired by a Vogue magazine cover in designing their own music magazine cover. Key aspects they replicated included the bold masthead, sophisticated main image, and column layout of the contents page. The author explains how they aimed to create a sophisticated, neutral design with a black and white color scheme. Feedback noted the contents page could be improved, so the author made changes like adding more color and spacing out the text. Overall, working on this preliminary project helped the author learn Photoshop skills to produce a higher quality final magazine cover.
The student created a music magazine called "Urbanised" to represent suburban youth culture influenced by hip hop and R&B. They developed the magazine's design based on real music magazines, including features like a front cover artist and sidebars. The front cover featured a black and white photo with red lips to look "edgy" and convey meanings related to the music industry. The contents page used an abstract photo of a model with headphones licking a flower to portray listening to music. A double page spread included various photos and questions/answers in red and black font to profile the front cover artist. The student believes media companies like "Vibe" and "XXL" would be interested given the magazine's target demographic
The document describes the design choices made for a media coursework magazine project. It discusses choosing black, white and purple as house colors based on a survey. The features page layout was inspired by another magazine, using a collage of photos and articles. Images were chosen and edited to portray the featured artist in different ways to engage readers. The written content uses colloquial language and inquires into celebrities' personal lives to appeal to the teenage girl target audience. References to popular artists on the cover and musical instruments in photos help suggest the magazine focuses on contemporary R&B and indie music genres.
The document discusses the layout and design conventions used in the student's media magazine project. It summarizes the inspirations and layout choices for the title, photo shoot including costumes and props, fonts, written content, genre, front cover, contents page, and double page spread. Real magazines like Kerrang, Q, and Channel were used for inspiration for things like titles, photoshoots, and layouts. The goal was to create a musical theater magazine that also featured the models as a girl band using conventions from real music magazines.
While the genre of a magazine for teenage girls limits how much the forms and conventions can be challenged, the author's magazine takes some steps in that direction. The images feature models of various shapes and sizes dressed modestly in white, challenging conventions of implying sexuality or materialism. However, the photos are still professionally shot in a studio like typical magazines. Fonts and colors are bright and playful like expected, but only one large image is used on the cover rather than many as is conventional. Overall, the author challenged conventions somewhat while still maintaining appeal for the target audience.
The document discusses the inspiration and design choices for a music magazine front cover created by the author. The author was inspired by the layout and style of Vogue magazine, particularly the prominent masthead, main image of a sophisticated model, and use of banners to highlight cover stories. The author's music magazine front cover uses a neutral color scheme of black and white to seem sophisticated. The model is pouting and looks serious to set the mature tone. The bold cover story text stands out as intended.
How does your media product represent particular socialanna-louise
The document discusses the representation of social groups in a media product's front cover, contents page, and double page spread. For the front cover, the model is dressed in current youth fashion trends and poses confidently. The contents page features minimal text and images related to the target audience. The double page spread shows the model in multiple outfits and poses, with short interview questions to engage readers. Throughout, fonts, colors, and layouts are designed to appeal to the target 13-25 year old demographic.
The document discusses how the author's music magazine product uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real music magazines.
The author analyzes the front cover of their magazine compared to the magazine "We Love Pop" which they used as a template. They adapted some conventions but also manipulated features to make their cover unique.
The author then discusses various design elements of their magazine including the masthead, dominant image, sell lines, and other conventions. For each element, they explain how they were inspired by "We Love Pop" and other magazines but also developed the conventions in their own way.
The document discusses photos chosen for the cover of a music magazine. Several photos are rejected for reasons like busy backgrounds, models not looking at the camera or smiling awkwardly. One photo is chosen because the model makes direct eye contact, the background is plain, and her serious expression is suitable. Feedback on the first draft cover suggests making the title bigger, adding details like the issue number, and toning down the lips. Changes are made for the second draft in response.
The photographer chose several images to use in their indie music magazine. Image 1 was selected for the cover because it creates a sense of mystery through partial eye contact. Image 2 was chosen for its fun, casual summer vibe. Image 3 shows full eye contact and will be edited to contrast with the cover images. The photographer plans to edit the images in Photoshop, including cropping, enhancing features, adjusting colors and contrast, and applying black and white or darker filters as needed to fit the magazine's style and layouts.
The document provides an evaluation of Alice Bates' media magazine project. It summarizes the key decisions made in designing the magazine, including opting for a minimalist style with white space over a "top of the pops" style. It describes experimenting with different fonts and layouts for the front cover and contents page before settling on designs inspired by other magazines but with her own twist. The double page spread design was also influenced by another magazine but uses a single background image instead of columns. The magazine aims to represent young women interested in music in an empowering way rather than focusing on sexuality.
The document describes the process of creating a music magazine cover and layout. The creator was inspired by a Vogue magazine cover they saw, particularly liking how it was set out like a poster and had bold writing for stories. For their music magazine, they aimed for a sophisticated look with neutral colors and a serious model on the cover. Feedback noted the contents page could be improved, so the creator added more color and spacing to make it look more professional while keeping the overall style. Through this process, the creator learned Photoshop skills that improved their work.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Pre production:
masthead
Masthead idea 1
This was my previous masthead ‘Hoops’. This name was
inspired by an item of jewellery, I wanted the name to attract
females because I am subverting the generic conventions of
hip-hop magazines as most of the time they are being created
for a male based audience.
The font is golden and embalmed, this is because I wanted
to capture a 3D- gold effect- just like gold hoop earrings. The
font is in graffiti style this is because I wanted to reinforce
the idea of the magazine being about hip-hop. It was also
very important to me that the name of the masthead is
short and catchy, this is so it is easy to remember.
3. Pre production:
masthead
My masthead will be place at the upper left corner
Masthead ideas:
of my magazine, in my research this is where it was
placed, I aim for my magazine masthead to be
catchy and different; it is important that it is
because this is how my audience would recognise
my magazine. I have looked at the website dafont
and have looked at different font ideas and styles; I Italic sans serif font
have looked at italics or serif fonts especially, this is
because to me it connotes sophistication and it
looks very feminine compared to the ‘KING’ sans Black or gold
serif font which is more masculine. However due to masthead
student criticism I have realised that unless this is colour
bevelled it does no really look catchy or stand
out, especially since I have decided on a plain block
colour such as black or gold, as I want to keep it
simple.
4. Experimenting with fonts
These fonts are all serif and my ideas for a
masthead, however it wouldn't really stand out
against an image and to me its is not bold or catchy
enough to be adapted to be made into a masthead.
5. MORE Masthead Ideas
My masthead is named ‘QUEEN’, I have
experimented with different ideas and looked at
different ways I can play with letters. When
looking for ideas I stumbled across a hip- hop
artist (Eminem’s album cover) and I am inspired
by the way the ‘E’ is backwards, I want to adopt Eminem’s album cover
this idea and make one of my ‘E’s backwards as
well, I have drawn a sketch of how I want my
masthead to look by expanding on the Eminem
idea.
I initially decided to use serif font because I I will use this serif font, but reverse
believe it represents femininity, however that the ‘E’ I can do this in Photoshop
does not stand out, I will be using serif font to
simplify my masthead yet make it more catchy
6. On Photoshop:
I could add a crown and play around some more.
The font used on the Eminem album and the
font I have is very similar, the effect on the album
cover is gritty hence why I will not be adopting
that style, but it could also connote hip-hop. To
add more femininity and reinforce the name I
want to incorporate a crown.
7. In Photoshop
On Photoshop I experimented with making my
masthead stand out incorporating my ideas from
research. I used the colour red because it is a
strong attractive vibrant colour, also used in two
magazine mastheads that I analysed. The colour
red could connotate to my readers:
Danger, Sex, Vibrance, Expressiveness etc. So I
believe that it is an effective colour to use.
To create this masthead I typed in ‘QUEN’
leaving a space between the U and E this
enabled me to create a separate layer for my
backwards E. I wanted to make my masthead
stand out so I added a ‘drop shadow’ and
‘inner shadow’ whilst including ‘Bevel and
Emboss’ I repeated the same process when
including my reverse E only I reversed it.
8. I wanted to add a crown to reinforce the name of my
magazine being called ‘QUEEN’ and to make my masthead
catchier. On the internet I got a stencil of a crown.
On Photoshop I was able change the colour to
gold and bevel and emboss it, I did this so it
would look similar to the text.
This was bevelled
and embossed.
9. Although the masthead I created
was serif bold and with the
crown, I still was not fully
confident that it looked right with
my image.
Masthead idea 2
I again continued to experiment on Photoshop. This
time instead of making my whole masthead red I
instead used the colour on a strip on the crown, this
to me makes it look more professional and catchy. My
masthead is also catchy because it is not a
conventional masthead that is large and spread across
a magazine, however it is small like the ‘XXL’ magazine
masthead, I also like the idea that the crown is large
on my masthead, it definitely reinforces the idea, and
draws my female audience base in.
Masthead idea 3
10. Front Page Image ideas..
The picture I had originally chosen was interesting because
of the background and her apparel, however I cannot use
this because she has no hip-hop equipment such as micro-
phones or headphones.
Although this image links to
music i.e. the microphone, the
image looks very unplanned
and unprofessional. The apparel
and styling of the model doesn’t
look very distinctive.
This image consists of a female and male
who have although dressed nicely are not
posing for a front page magazine. Student
criticism says that they are posed to casually
and although headphones are featured in
the image, it still doesn’t relate to hip-hop.
Also the place that I chose to take the picture
does not look very distinctive or attractive
either. If I was to erase the background
nether the less the image still would be
inappropriate.
11. I wanted my main image will be of a female wearing attractive but not provocative
clothing. The picture I had originally chosen was interesting because of the background and
her apparel, however I couldn’t use it because she has no hip-hop equipment such as
micro-phones or headphones. It is important that the age of the model is appropriate, so
nobody too young or too old but between my target age range. Ethnicity is not important
to me because it would good to see different ethnicities on my front page however black
people are mainly featured on hip-hop magazines.
This was my original front page
image, On Photoshop I
experimented with different
effects, this was one that I was most
fond of as it really made the model
stand out. I used this effect on a
number of my pictures.
Original Picture Photoshop edited photo
12. More images
This is another image I
considered using for my main
front page image, although my
models are dressed stylishly and
looking very poised, the image
lacks a strong hip-hop feel, I used
this for my double page spread
instead, where I can talk about
the models and explain what the
image is about.

13. Front Page Image ideas..
Tayana
Taylor
Since my magazine is about empowering women, I
decided that I want to subvert the way women are
normally dressed. These images in particular show this.
Another thing that makes these images successful to me
is the way they are positioned; on the image on the far
right she has crossed her legs with a facial expression
that looks confused, whilst above the girl looks more
sure of herself, independent and head strong. Both
women are dressed out of the norm of what a female
would normally dress like, i.e. the tuxedo and the
trainers and had paired of with glasses and
suspenders, big chain and tap shoes.

Monae
14. Front Page Image..
This is my final front page image, although there is no hip hop
apparel and things around her that suggest that it may be hip-
hop. She is posed in a sophisticated attention grabbing way. I
believe this image works particularly well because of the
background and they way she is posed.
She is wearing colourful attractive attire which
corresponds well with the background. The shirt
buttoned all the way to the top can denotate intelligent
and sophistication, similarly it is what men normally do.
On the other hand she is wearing a bodycon skirt, this
reinforces feminism. On the whole she is dressed how
my target audience would generally dress this would
attract my audience.
Behind the model there is a graffitied wall, this
would denotate hip-hop as it is an expressional
rebellious thing that mostly teenagers do that is
also associated with the genre. I have blurred the
background however so it is not the main
focus, only the model, I have also darkened the
edges of the image this makes it look more
professional.
15. Layout
Using grids on InDesign I was
able to add my catch lines
against a border that made
them straight, this made it
look more professional.
When considering what was going to
be in my cover lines I made sure my
target audience was my central focus.
When considering my where I want to place

would contribute to my work looking more
professional and appealing
16. From my research I know that I have to a line my cover lines and masthead on the left
with my main catch line was on the right. This is a basic convention on a music magazine.
Another basic convention which I failed to include was a barcode and price along with
the issue number and date.
