This document discusses planning and revisions for a table of contents (TOC) page for a magazine. IMAGE 1:
This is the mid shot model pose that I suggested for the first and possibly second
ideas. I wanted the model to be slightly side on, so I could position her against the left
of the TOC. I like the red jumper because it fits with the colour scheme of the
magazine. The bandana and glasses are also particularly associated with the genre.
The pose also gives the sense of status that I like as well as the shot is taken from
slightly below the model’s eyeline, which again means she seems more authoritative.
Half of the model’s elbow is, however out of the frame, this means it becomes
increasingly difficult to manipulate this image. Similarly I feel the pose is too similar to
that of my cover and double page spread.
IMAGE 2:
The idea of this image was to have my model ‘holding up’ the world or
the title of the page. I also wanted it to look like she was working a
crowd at a concert. The shot from behind is unconventional in the
magazine industry however I liked it because it feels as if she is
presenting the contents to the audience. The background is also easily
removable so I could place her on a different background if need be.
The shot is, however, a mid shot, which means the amount that can be
done with it is somewhat restricted.

5. FIRST
DRAFT
FEEDBACK:
• May need to be darker
• The image is a little too big for the
TOC and so it overwhelms the page
• The image is too close up (consider a
re-shoot)
• There are too many different colours
on this page.
• Too many fonts
• The cyclone text should be white
because it sticks out too much.
My initial draft has strong points but needs much
improvement. I like the graphical use of the ‘W’
behind the model and the above “Incoming text”
however I feel that the whole think needs to be
darker. In order to fit with the rest of my magazine.
The front cover and the DPS have quite dark black
and reds and I think that this might need to match the
rest. Though the idea of a receipt displaying the
editorial pillars is graphically pleasing it does feel
slightly out of place given the graphical quality of my
magazine.

6. ADDITIONAL CHOSEN PHOTO
I like this photo better for my TOC because I feel it
is a wider shot in addition to this the pose is
different to that of both the other pages. The image
features a relatively white background and so again
I can remove the model and put her in front of a
darker background. I also may consider putting the
image in black and white because I feel the colour
of the jacket stand out from the unifying theme of
my magazine. The fist in the air has connotations of
power, but links specifically with the “black power”
raised fist which, though being an old gesture, is
often used in the Hip Hop industry and referenced
in many Rap songs. However the model’s
expression is quite cheery and will contrast with
some of the more image heavy pictures on the DPS
and front cover. I like having the two extremes of
the hyper real hip hop façade, but also the more
realistic grounded images. In this respect I like this
photo. I think it is much like a campaign or
propaganda poster and I think this is very
synonymous with the genre and the idea of these
rap icons being like a type of royalty, so I may use it
to look like a poster.

7. FINAL DESIGN
The main idea behind my final design was to
create a darker more edgy contents page to fit
with the rest of the magazine. When looking
through my magazine I found that the initial
table of contents was too bright. What I like
about this TOC is that it looks like a poster and
combines the best aspects from the previous
with the new style. The graphic ‘W; which was
in the background returns along with one of the
photos. I felt however that I wanted to go for
closer up, portrait style images of the other
featured artists and to go for a slightly
unconventional lack of pictures. I drew a lot of
inspiration for Vibe for my contents and how
they use one main model and decorate around
them with their editorial pillars. The premise of
my magazine is a few main features and some
regular sections and so I did not need a great
deal of Pillars. I believe this TOC fits in better
with the graphical style of the magazine whilst
also adding a new dynamic to it.

8. EXTENSION:
ADVERT
Upon studying Nike’s advertising campaigns I
found they usually opt for heavily graphic
images which are often superimposed or have
effects coming off them. The most common
thing I found was they have very short slogans
in their heavily bold font and then a larger focus
on the shoes themselves. They are usually
very minimalist in their style but incredibly
detailed. For this the idea was fighting against
winter and I used the idea of fire and snow as
two opposites.
