Narrative Reflection
Coming into Drexel, an important factor I learned was to have a clear understanding in the art and
mechanics for literature composition. I learned that it would mature my writing to a higher level of
thinking. My past experiences in my writing through high school English teacher feedback indicated
my writing to be full of flaws. I often would receive feedback on my writing being awkwardly worded
or lacking fluidity. The one valuable skill I learned from English courses here at Drexel was the idea
that exposure to different readings, conceptual knowledge in writing and informal writing practices
give practice, in order for me to find my own voice in writing.
For instance, in my English 101 class, where my personal narrative for instance demonstrates an
efficient dynamics, especially in the importance of articulating a message. Furthermore, for my drafts
I received much advice which would be altered or incorporated within the final piece. Concerns such
as the addition of dialogue, grammar and tense issues and overall style would be explicitly answered
throughout the process of revising and editing my draft. General criticism, however I was given about
my narrative was the idea that it needed clarity, by focusing on a specific event. The account of my
summer experience in Pakistan such as how I felt before leaving the country to embracing the lifestyle
of my relatives needed more depth, a central theme. Since my encounter of witnessing poverty first
hand conveyed a powerful

Yellow Ribbon Short Story
Let us use our imagination for a brief moment to connect with these characters to better understand
what the various authors are trying to teach. As I ve illustrated below, figures from the short stories
display exceptional examples of the following lessons. First, pretend to be in a position of loneliness.
Next, imagine decision making, and how others poor decisions can provide a cause and effect. The
three lessons I learned from reading the five stories were loneliness, an absence of love, and the
importance of decision making. The first lesson I would like to emphasize on is loneliness. I love you!
You can t leave me like this (Jones 102)! Is what the widow in Footprints screamed. In that moment of
the story, she is not only struck with sadness but a sudden feeling of intense loneliness. Loneliness is
horrid especially in cases severe as this one. I think this is the lesson the author is trying to teach. In
the story Hate Bracelet the author captures the main character s anguish; in such a manner that it is
disgusting to see Lisa behave the way she does. While Lisa s misery may not all be self inflicted, this
is a perfect illustration of what alienating can cause if sustained for a great length of time. While
reading this next story, I could relate to the seclusion Abigail s mother was giving her. In Yellow
Ribbon the author is educating her readers that forcing isolation on people is atrocious. In my opinion,
the stories I referenced demonstrate great

Characterism In The Black Witch By Laurie Forest
The Black Witch, a Novel written by Laurie Forest and published May 2017, attempts to tell a
fictional story about a young girl who confronts racism, elitism, and biasness; and grows into a hero
for not just her people, but of all races. It is meant to be a story of redemption and learning to trust
those she has been raised to hate and fear, a premise in which first intrigued me to purchase the book,
however upon reading it fails to succeed in its mission, thus leaving me disappointed in the story.
While it is the first book in a series, it is my belief that while there should be some lingering questions
that makes a reader want to continue the series, the initial promise of fully trusting the other races
should have been fulfilled. Elloren Gardner is the main character, and our POV for this story. We first
meet her living in a rural town with her uncle and unaware of her status within her people. Her entire
life she is raised with strict religious beliefs, for which she has no basis to question them. Part of these
religious indoctrinations is that her people are pure and that all other races are evil, a belief she holds
strongly to. We are first introduced to this belief in the very first chapter where Elloren states We
Gardnerians are a pure blooded race, free from the stain of the heathen races that surround us. This
ingratiates the reader that our main character is racist towards the other races that share this fictional
world. On initial reading, I placed this

Milton Friedman
In his paper, The Social Responsibilities of Business is to Increase its Profits (Friedman, 1970), Milton
Friedman discusses social responsibility and what he feels it means in the business arena. He goes on
to say A corporation is an artificial person (Friedman, 1970) and since this is not a real person, cannot
have any responsibilities. While a corporation or business has a leader or board of directors, Friedman
states these individuals cannot make decisions on social responsibility without eating into the profits
of the company, the employee s wages, or even the price that the customer has to pay for the item.
Upon my first review of Friedman s article, I thought he was throwing everything about a good
company out the window. After reading it a second time, and realizing it was written in 1970, I believe
he was stating the first responsibility of a company is to make a profit. Why else would you be in
business? You cannot make money if you give your goods away for free! I believe this is the

the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) of 1975, and have subsequently been increased and

Meursault And Raskolnikov
How can the way a character acts or treats other people push the plot of a book forward? Fyodor
Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment and Albert Camus novella The Stranger both feature main
characters guilty of committing murder; however, the the two main characters, Meursault and
Raskolnikov, act very differently and so their fates end up very different. The main character of the
The Stranger is a man simply called Monsieur Mersault. Camus presents Meursault as an honest
person. This doesn t necessarily work in his favor, as he tells people repeatedly that things don t
matter. He is very emotionally detached from everyone and everything. He does not even cry when his
own mother dies, and he does not love the woman who is supposed to be his love interest. Meursault

Meursault, true to his characterization, doesn t really react. He feels no guilt because he does not feel
like anything matters. The murder he committed was just another thing that happened. He is caught
and put on trial for his crimes. The prosecutor uses his indifference toward the death of his mother and
everything else to get him convicted. Even after his conviction, he doesn t show any emotion.
Raskolnikov, however, immediately becomes paranoid about what he has done and thinks that
everyone knows. He falls ill after his crime and the people around him start to believe he has gone
insane. This leads people to suspect him of committing the crime. Perhaps had he not acted the way he
did, no one would suspect of the crime. Despite actually having feelings after his crime, Raskolnikov
also feels no guilt for killing the old woman because of his philosophy about extraordinary men. He
simply dislikes the fact that he wasn t successful and therefore not an extraordinary man. Raskolnikov
ends up confessing to the crime and because of his supposed insanity after the murder it is decided

Love in To His Coy Mistress and Remember Essay
Love in To His Coy Mistress and Remember On first outlook it would that To His Coy Mistress and
Remember both share the topic of love. They seem to be of direct relevance to each other, whereas
upon closer inspection, To His Coy Mistress does not attempt to express any emotion at all. Instead,
THCM is ultimately physical and portrays a man s desperation and lust, The persona of THCM has
written this poem as a persuasion technique, with the addressee being his current girlfriend while the
speaker from Remember appears to be leaving a message to her soul mate. The two poems both
mention a lot about time, although in different tenses. THCM makes an abundance of references of the
present tense such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The persona almost makes it seem like she is going somewhere on holiday. Other examples of
euphemisms in Remember are When you can no more hold me by the hand meaning the physical bond
will be severed, and It will be late then to counsel or to pray meaning she will be dead soon and the
addressee won t be able to pray for her.. In contrast THCM is very graphic and tries to fill the readers
mind with violent and gruesome images. Some examples of this are Then worms shall try that long
preserved virginity , The grave s a fine and private place, But none, I think, do there embrace , Tear
our pleasures with rough strife . Both poems contain a lot of metaphorical content, but again the
alignment differs. In Remember the speaker uses metaphorical devices to soften the message that she
is bringing across ( Gone far away into the silent land ) whereas in THCM the speaker uses metaphors
to try and hide his sarcasm and infidelity ( Thy beauty shall no more be found; Nor, in thy marble
vault, shall sound My echoing song ). Both poems share a small part of irony. In Remember the
persona is almost commanding the addressee to remember her, but then saying it s alright if he forgets.
The other contradiction of this poem is that she says it s alright if he forgets her, but by writing a
poem, she immortalised her existence. On the other had, THCM starts the adversative section 2 with

The Origins Of The Ancient Civilization
Could you imagine the entire population of The United States just disappearing? That is what
happened to the Mayans. In a time span of only one hundred years, the whole Maya population was
wiped out. There are several theories about the cause of their decline. Due to their disappearance the
great Mayan inventions were lost in time until modern day anthropologists discovered that they made
their own calendar and language along with many other things. What anthropologists do know for sure
is that the Mayans were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization dating back to 250 B.C made up of
more than 19 million people (smithsonian.com). Their empire centered in the tropical lowlands of
what is now Guatemala. The Maya people reached their peak of power around the 6th century A.D.
The Mayans were successful in many ways; History.com, a website dedicated to informing the public
about important historical information, states, The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph
writing, calendar making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive
architecture and symbolic artwork (Maya). The Mayans were an intelligent people, we know they
created the Mayan calendar, had their own written language, they also had their own way of building
large pyramids by hand. The Maya also made paper from tree bark and wrote in books made from this

Theme Of Marigolds By Eugenia Collier
In Marigolds , a short story by Eugenia Collier, the experiences of the protagonist support one of the
many themes that growing up will deprive you of the innocence that you used to have as a child. She
develops the theme that one cannot have both compassion and innocence. Through the use of several
literary techniques such as symbolism, conflict, resolution, and irony, the author conveys through the
protagonist, the overall theme of this short story. There are many situations that the main character
goes through that show the reader the true meaning of this. Lizabeth, the main character, transforms

Indonesian Demographic Transition Essay
Introduction
The effects of population control programs on demographic change were not instant, and it takes long
serious effort to encourage the improvement of economic development in a country. According to Paul
J. Gertler (1994, p. 33), Population control is a key element in a country s ability to maintain and
improve its economic and social welfare . Furthermore, this paper intends to explain why the change
of population structure has an effect on the society s economic condition in Indonesia with examining
the demographic variables.

In general, Indonesia has been considered successful to reduce fertility and mortality rates. The total
fertility rate (TFR) in Indonesia decreased significantly from the average of 5.6 children per female in
1971 to 4.6 in 1980, from about 3.3 in 1987 decreased to 3.02 in 1990 and continuously dropped to
2.8 in 1994. From 1997 to 2002, according to Indonesia Demographic and Health survey 2002 (IDHS
2002, 2003), the TFR was 2.7 and declined to 2.6 children per female.

Meanwhile, the crude death rate in Indonesia in 1970 was 17, 7.9 in 1988, increased slightly to 9 in

The Munich Agreement And The Anglo German Declaration
For some European powers at the time, The Munich Agreement and the Anglo German Declaration
was considered to have achieved a peace that was thought to be unconceivable. Unfortunately, the
great claims of Neville Chamberlain did not come true. These agreements only delayed the inevitable
between the great European powers and allowed Hitler to gather more territory with relative ease. This
document between the powers of Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom outlined the terms
and conditions under which Germany would annex a large portion of Czechoslovakia. Throughout this
text, the historical context and significance of the Munich Agreement will be analyzed. The Munich
Agreement was produced in hopes to stop Hitler; he was threatening to unleash war upon Europe if he
did not get the Sudetenland. With Hitler s tyrannical pleas, the leaders of Britain, France, and Italy
agreed to the annexation of a large portion of Czechoslovakia out of fear of war (Munich Agreement).
It is important to note that Italy was an ally of Germany. Benito Mussolini, Italy s leader at the time,
was one of Hitler s greatest inspirations during his rise to power. Germany, Italy, Britain, and France
all came together in Munich, Germany to hold a conference to discuss Hitler s tyrannical demands.
The agreement was signed on September 29th, 1938 and it formally allowed for Germany s
annexation of the Sudetenland (Munich Agreement). The agreement came at a time where Europe

Gay Scouts Monologue
As the boutonnière was pinned onto my suit jacket and the velcro corsage straps were carefully

My first challenge as a semi openly gay man was precariously holding the rank of Life Scout in my
local Boy Scout Troop. While gay scouts were technically banned from the organization at that time,
they would have had to throw me out. There was a movement of scouts who, having earned the rank
of Eagle, mailed back their badge accompanied by a letter stating they would not accept the
organization s award until they allowed both gay scouts and adults. Thus, I was inspired to do the
same and reject scouting s highest rank. Ironically enough, I was on the Amtrak train to New Mexico

Bishop And The Candlesticks Essay
The Bishop and the Candlesticks is a selection of Les Misérables about the criminal Jean Valjean and
his life changing interaction with an aged bishop, Monseigneur François Bienvenu. Here we find Jean
just released from prison, and after traveling a long distance, he cannot find an inn that will take him
or someone that will sell him food. Finally, he finds himself at the door of M. Bienvenu, who
welcomes him in, gives him a bed and food. Jean, although surprised by the bishop s kindness, steals
silver dishes and flees in the night. Although others may disagree on the virtues of the bishop, saying
it was his duty, The Bishop and the Candlesticks provide an example of virtues and the differences
between good and evil. The Bishop is compared to that of a Saint, while Jean Valjean ... Show more

It was more than a smile an almost a radiance. On his forehead rested the indescribable reflection of
an unseen light (PDF, p.405).
This saintly character, as Bernard Mayo would describe, is more than the sum of its parts (Pojman, p.
414). Instead of killing the sleeping man of such great virtue, Jean Valjean spares his life and in the
end finds a hero to base the rest of his life upon. O.J. Urmson would describe the bishop as doing his
duty in contexts in which fear would lead most men not to do it, and does so without effort (Pojman,
p. 417). The bishop took in the criminal when no one else would, even the site of Valjean made people
afraid.
According to Aristotle and his theory of means, Jean Valjean can see the bishop as saintly and his
sister and housekeeper can see the bishop as foolhardy. Yet it is difficult to not see that Hugo is
making a point to show the bishop as a saintly figure, one to demonstrate to Jean that there is good
within and evil acts are not the only option for the ex convict. The bishop changes the life of Valjean,
by giving him a role model to base his new life

According to some reports, nearly 11% of women and 5% of men in the United States are currently
taking one or more anti depressant medications. These medications can truly be life savers, helping
people get through some of the most difficult times in their lives, and there is certainly no shame in
seeking a little help to get through a challenging period. However, most people are uncomfortable
with the idea of taking a mood altering, prescription medication for their entire lives. Some people are
concerned about the potentially unknown, long term side effects of anti depressants. Others just want
to experience life naturally, without any drugs. There are several factors you need to consider before
you make the decision to discontinue anti depressant therapy. First off, ask yourself if your depression
really has gotten better. How has your mood been, generally speaking? Has your appetite returned to
normal, or are you eating considerably more or less than you normally would? Are you sleeping
better? How is your social life? Make sure that your depression really has lifted and that you haven t
just learned to live with the symptoms of depression. If you ve been stable for at least six months, are
feeling confident, have a good support system in place, and have the desire to stop treatment, it may
be time to ask your doctor about stopping your anti depressant therapy. It is very important that you do
not just stop taking your medicine. Your body has gotten used to your medication and abruptly
stopping it could cause serious withdrawal symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, fainting, and even
a return of your depression. Your doctor will likely wean you off of your medicine by gradually
lowering your dose over a period of time, usually a few weeks to a few months. This can be frustrating
for some people who see depression as a chapter in their life that they are eager to close. However, by
following your dose

Reducing High School Dropouts
In the education system today, competition for scholarships and acceptance into college is increasingly
competitive. In order to access to these advantageous opportunities, students in high school work
diligently in order to maintain high grades. As a consequence, distractions, and even worse, falling
behind, can be disastrous. Many of these said distractions however, are fellow students themselves.
Just as many students strive for excellence, others barely pass for mediocracy, and they drag diligent
students down in their apathy of school. In order to remove these distractions, it could be suggested

The Effect of Ph on a Food Preservative Essay
The Effect of pH on a Food Preservative
September 18, 2012
Objective:
To study the affect of pH on a food preservative.
Chemical Equation: C6H5COONa + HCL C6H5COOH + NaCl
Procedure:
This experiment was started with a clear solution of sodium benzoate and HCl was added to it,
ultimately producing benzoic acid. First, .3395 g of sodium benzoate was weighed, then it was
dissolved in water, causing it to disassociate into ions. Next, 3M of HCl were added drop wise to the
solution until it reached a pH of 2, thus introducing the hydronium ion. This addition caused a white,
solid benzoic acid to precipitate out of the solution. A vacuum filtration system was used to separate
the solid from the liquid. What was once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once, the precipitate was ready to be placed in the oven there was not enough time to allow for it to
dry for 10 minutes. The precipitate was only in the oven for about 5 minutes, therefore, when weighed
there was excess liquid in the precipitate. The final weight of the precipitate was .45 g which was
more than the amount that was started with. From this end weight, it can be deduced that there was
excess liquid in the end result.
Post Lab: 1. The experiment began with a clear solution of sodium benzoate, once 3 M of HCl were
added to achieve a pH of 2, the clear solution became a precipitate. Sodium benzoate was water
soluble, but the yield of benzoic acid became quite insoluble in water.
3b. Although, a low amount of HCl was used, the waste can still cause health risks and risks to the
environment because it was not just one person doing the experiment, therefore increasing the waste
of HCl. Water was also used to wash the vial to remove all solids that might be sticking to the side of
the vial, therefore, wasting water, which is not green.
4. If you start adding NaOH to the solution in small amounts, NaOH neutralizes part of the HCl,
(moles of HCl to moles of NaOH) so the pH begins to increase slowly, this raises the soluability. This
allows for the equivalent point to be reached: moles of HCl = moles of NaOH. By continuing to add
the NaOH, pH will

Forence And Leadership Of The Renaissance
How did florence gain leadership of Renaissance?
The Renaissance (Rebirth) declined throughout most of the Europe. The renaissance is an Italian idea,
androgen the Italian Renaissance generally covers the periods from the beginning of the 14th century
to the end of the 16th century. And florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
The artistic and economic changes that are associated with the Renaissance, first began in the
Florence.Trade, crusades and the expansion of commerce in city states (11th and 12th ) centuries
helped florence a lot in economy. Geography also made florence a model of Renaissance culture

They studied the writings and works of the Greeks and the Romans and realized that earlier

Analysis Of Hester Street By Joan Micklin Silver
As John F. Kennedy famously stated, the United States of America exists as a nation of immigrants.
Besides those from Native American descent, every occupant of America can attribute their lineage to
ancestors who emigrated from another country and adopted America as their new home. Coming to a
new nation brings with it a series of difficulties, one of which is the struggle to find balance between
assimilation and the preservation of one s ethnic identity. Such a struggle is very present in the
romantic film Hester Street, directed by Joan Micklin Silver, detailing the lives of Jake and Gitl, two
Jewish immigrants living in New York during the early 20th century. Jake and Gitl each maintain
different attitudes toward assimilation, yet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hester Street does a good job of portraying this pressure, demonstrating its effects on specific
characters. After Gitl and Joey s arrival in New York, Jake takes the two, along with Bernstein to a
park outside the city. Pacing around while the other three sit under a tree, Jake exclaims: look what a
place is America, nu, Bernstein? (1:03:00) praising the scenic beauty of the little park, with its bright
sun, towering trees, and luscious grass. His acclaim of his surroundings represents his sense of pride
for the land around him, desiring to tout America to Bernstein, who less identifies with American
culture. Jake represents a very assimilated immigrant, further demonstrated in this scene by his
appearance. Walking around the three, Jake sports a striped, collared shirt and polka dot tie underneath
a snazzy pinstripe vest, as well as well fitted pants, and leather, lace up boots. Also, besides his
mustache, he is clean shaven and wears neat, slicked down hair. Jake s outfit and hairstyle correspond
with the average appearance of an American man of this time, representing his embrace of American
culture. As the shot switches between him, and Bernstein and Gitl, the stark contrast in their
appearances is accentuated, juxtaposing Jake s Americanized garb to the traditional outfits of their
native country of Russia. Bernstein s all black, 3 piece, wool suit, large

Essay On Women In The Great Gatsby
Throughout literature women are often displayed as idealized characters. Women in the eyes of society
are plagued with the stereotype of being kind, nurturing, and tender individuals while men are
established as ambitious, assertive, and tough. However, when the time comes for women to possess
the qualities of men and men of women, a turnaround of events can occur. Women were the
individuals that then shape the males into their ending personna. Shakespeare s Macbeth, George
Orwell s Nineteen Eighty Four, and F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby demonstrated the reversal
of gender roles through portraying women as the instigator of the male character s ultimate demise. In
particular, Macbeth s women are some of the most famous females ... Show more content on

Throughout the novel, the reader is constantly wondering who exactly Gatsby is and the mystery as to
how he made his riches. It is later learned that he gained his money dishonestly. Gatsby did this with
the purpose of gaining the woman he loved since she wanted to live a wealthy life. Daisy s greed
drove Gatsby into having the ambition of becoming rich. Daisy had even chosen Tom Buchanan to
marry to live a wealthy life regardless of how poorly treated she was by him. She picked him over
Gatsby since Gatsby was not rich at the time they met. She even exaggerates her greed by killing
Myrtle and uses Tom to blame Gatsby to keep her life of wealth. Nick says They were careless people,
Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their
vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess
they had made, (Fitzgerald 136 145). Gatsby admits to the murder she committed and in the end is

Misconceptions In Much Ado About Nothing
A syndication of both tragedy and comedy, Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare s
most loved comedies. The play was written in 1598 and was heavily influenced by the trends of the
Renaissance period. And in order to cater to the trend of growing optimism in the Renaissance,
Shakespeare wrote this light hearted comedy. Renaissance, literally meaning rebirth, contributes to the
scene where Hero is pronounced dead and then comes back to life. With inspiration coming from the
ancient Greek and Roman writing styles, Much Ado About Nothing is a fine piece by Shakespeare.

Legionella Pneumophila Experiment
Within in cells, there are many functions, systems, and structures. One such system is the
endomembrane system containing the endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and
endosomes. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) plays a significant role in protein and lipid synthesis and
membrane production. Once synthesized, proteins travel through the cell and the various membranes
to reach their final destination. But how? Vesicles transport everything through vesicular
transportation. However, sometimes the vesicles, which are relaying the information between
organelles within the cells, are intercepted by large molecules such as phagosomes. One type of
bacteria, Legionella pneumophila, which utilizes phagosomes for reproductive purposes, was
examined by Kagan and Roy (2002) in their experiment. They questioned how the bacteria spread
within the cell, why it could create a new organelle, and under what conditions this organelle would be
created. They hypothesized that Legionella pneumophila containing phagosomes (LCP) have 2 phases
of maturation and this maturation allows for the replication of LCP infected cells within an organism.

People but instead people always are discriminating on pitbulls.
Starting with my first Reason is that it is not fair that people try to hide other dog attacks. I thought
this because more people will throw out pitbull attacks but they will try to hide other attacks for dogs
with a better reputation such as labradors. MY evidence from the passage is Despite the fact that other
breeds of dogs can and do attack citizens, these attacks go unmentioned at the news .
This just shows people are against pitbulls in an unfair way.
I have another reason about why i think pitbulls are treated unfairly. This reason in being is i think that
most of the time if the news doesn t know who the dog breed is that commited the attack they will just
say it was a pitbull . Here is my evidence from the passage The media and the Pitbull . If a Dog breed
is unknown, News media will often call it a pitbull . I think this is unfair because you shouldn t just

Babe Secoli s Definition Of The Workplace
Ask most people what their definition of a workplace is, and the general answer is: the environment in
which I work. Yet, upon deeper consideration, there is so much more to it. A workplace is a melting
pot of every individual factor that compromises the place in which someone works. There is the
succession of management down to the various positions, customers, goals, sales, products, etc. Many
fail to recognize all of the minute details that are needed to build a business. These work communities
foster leadership, organization, teamwork, communication, and innovation. However, this is the ideal
form and normally arduous to find. Most labor environments feature corrupt leadership, ulterior
motives, and a general lack of sensitivity and care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is no lie that rivalry creates results. By offering incentives and driving a minor wedge of possible
superiority with bragging rights among the employees, motivation also increases. This is, nonetheless,
only progressive in small, controlled doses. Among employees, rivalry can instill a feeling of utter
individuality. Instead of working together to complete a task, everyone feels the need to do it
themselves. This can decrease productivity and result in jobs not getting finished. In a study done by
Todd Arnold, it was found that in highly competitive retail environments, the relationship between
ambiguity and job efficiency was weaker (Santora 82). If the push for competition is too extensive, the
core values of the company can also falter. It soon becomes a drive for maximizing profit and less
about ensuring the staff that their work is appreciated. This is extensively clear with the issue of credit
cards at JCPenney. Managers begin to lose sight of their workers as people, and only view them as the
number of applications they get. It becomes as if there is a number floating above one s head and that
is how each personnel is seen. This also inadvertently decides who the favorite staff members are.
Then, even if the goal is met with a worker, their 3 applications are compared to another s 6. It is a
never ending game that

The Second Language ( L2 ) Learners
The second language(L2) learners often struggle to identify possible grammars in their second
languages. In particular, they fail to form a sentence with an appropriate functional morpheme
(Lardiere, 1998; White, 2003). A functional morpheme refers to a morpheme which performs some
kind of grammatical function, playing a role in lexical change. It consists of the function words in the
language such as definite markers. The inflection of a definite marker, in other words, definiteness,
distinguishes a nominal phrase (NP) between identifiable and non identifiable. That is, whether or not,
a referent is identifiable or previously introduced in the discourse. In addition to identifiability,
definiteness is expected to incorporate other notion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This paper mostly analyzes the issue of cross linguistic variation of definiteness with sample data and
examples from English and Japanese.
Dryer (2013) classifies definiteness into five categories. The first type is the languages in which
definite article are independent, and are distinct from demonstrative words. This type is used
commonly in Western European, Oceanic and Mesoamerican languages (Dryer, 2013; Schroeder,
2006). English is categorized in this type of languages.
In English, the grammatical element is encoded with regard to a contrast between a definite article the,
and indefinite articles a/an in the language. The type of noun (count versus mass) is also a factor:
indefinite mass nouns and indefinite plural countable nouns can appear without articles, i.e. as bare
nouns. Furthermore, other determiners in English are consist of demonstratives, possessives,
quantifiers, and cardinal numbers, some of which are definite and indefinite. The distribution of
articles in English is presented in (1). Examples involving singular count nouns are illustrated in (2).
Note that these singular count nouns cannot be bare, as illustrated in (2e).

Human Flaws In The Book Of Genesis
Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Torah, is for many people a book of innocent stories about the
Creation, and the noble Patriarchs that follow the will of God. However, Genesis has much more to
provide to humankind than stories; whether or not one takes Genesis as history, it does give insight
into the lives and customs of the primeval Jewish people. Fundamentally, the Book of Genesis focuses
on the family. The Book follows the descendants of Adam through the Patriarchs, offering a look into
each family, and the dynamics surrounding them. Genesis, and much of the Torah, are unique in that it
portrays the Lord s chosen not as upright and noble people, but people with deep, distinctly human
flaws, flaws that many families today can relate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Based on the comparison of Genesis monogamous and polygamous relationships, the culture of the
patriarchs valued heirs above all. Whether or not the people of that culture took the concept of a one
man one woman marriage as tradition, or something to be valued, it is clear that the format of a
marriage does not matter when heirs are at stake. Genesis states that Abram was 86 years old when
Hagar bore him Ishmael, meaning Sarah gave Abraham to Hagar after a monogamous marriage of
many decades (16:16) Now, as Sarah obviously felt jealousy, the need for an heir to Abraham s name
bore greater weight than their relationship. As seen in the story of Lot and his daughters, the need for
an heir even drove some to commit incest, an act most likely seen as indecent. The desire for sons is
what partially prompted Leah and Rachel to fight. In addition, the concept of the heir relates to the
repeated use of generations and genealogy chapters in the book, emphasizing Genesis focus on the

website. As a result, Decathlon China should use specific online forums about sports, where people
usually tell their purchasing experiences, ask questions, etc. and where Decathlon China could use
banners to be visible and attractive. Decathlon China could also hire an employee who will be charged
to share its purchasing experiences at Decathlon China , so as to convince people to have a closer look

Weimar Republic Failure
There are many historians that believe the Weimar Republic was doomed from the beginning of its
existence as a rump state of the once powerful German Empire. Other historians believe the republic is
not such a failure as it seems in textbooks and online articles. Both sides unanimously agree that the
Weimar Republic was a failed attempt at bringing democracy to a predominantly monarchical (and
tyrannical) Europe. The majority of historians that agree the ill fated Weimar Republic was a smudge
on Germany during the Interwar Period have a large amount of validities to support that claim.
However, these validities also apply to the latter (to a lesser extent) , with one major problem resolved
by the republic. One of the claims is that the Weimar Republic was simply too weak to establish itself
as a political power in Germany, being contested by left and right wing extremist groups. There were
often frequent rebellions in Germany, led by Communists and Marxists. The military at the time was
far too outnumbered to quell these rebellions in their own jurisdiction. Another major impediment was
the hyperinflation of the currency of that time, the German Mark. After the Great War, Germany was
in a state of utter devastation and rebellion. The Kaiser had just fled Germany, and she was now
without a leader, essentially cutting head off the snake. The military had also returned in a similar
shape. The German economy was in ruins. The Weimar Republic was still responsible for

Why Was Collectivisation
How significant was collectivisation in Russia up to 1940?
Collectivisation is debatably Stalin s most important policy and the pinnacle of Communism. Causing
drastic changes for the Russian people, it could be argued that collectivisation was very significant in
Russia up to 1940. It was a successful tool used to reaffirm Stalin s power and spread Socialism; it
fueled industrialism, turning Russia into a global superpower once more; but most tragically, could be
named the greatest agricultural and social disaster ever experienced in Russia. However others may
argue that collectivisation was extraneous: industrialisation was the main cause of Russia s rising

It was the greatest social disaster to have hit Russian peasants, making it highly significant. During the
period of collectivisation, grain production levels were at their lowest, taking 25 years to achieve pre
collectivisation era levels, however, in order to improve the economy, grain procurement levels were
unrealistically high. This generated a widespread famine and violence in rural Russia. Violence levels
rocketed as riots against collectivisation broke out all over the countryside. Many were shocked by the
mass slaughter and human misery that it had brought about. It is estimated that a staggering 10 15
million people died of hunger and violence during the years of collectivisation; this number alone
highlights the significance of collectivisation. Furthermore, the famine increased as the Soviet
government procured grain only for the sake of doing so. In Ukraine, millions were left to starve in
what became known as the Black Famine as the government rooted out hidden stocks of grain, only to
have them rot in warehouses. The situation was not helped by the elimination of kulaks either; the
farming expertise had been purged, thus, there was no one to pull the peasants out of starvation.
Hence, collectivisation was highly significant as it resulted in a prodigious number of deaths, and
agriculturally, was a terrible

Physical Cognitive And Psychosocial Development Of...
The following chapters reviewed the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of
adolescence, which consists of children between the ages of eleven and nineteen. The sexual
maturation process of puberty is a key developmental change that occurs in adolescent children. There
are distinct transformations that characterize a girl s development from a boy s maturation. Girls
experience the growth of breast tissue, an added layer of fat on her skin, and menstruation, while boys
develop broad shoulders, enlargement of the testes and the production of sperm (Papalia Martorell,
2014). A child s cognitive processing continues to improve throughout this developmental phase. An
adolescent can now carry out more complex problems through abstract reasoning. Structural and
functional changes are also a cognitive transformation during this age range (Papalia Martorell, 2014).
In the adolescent phase, a child s psychosocial development includes searching for identity, exploring
his/her sexuality, and relying more on peers for support (Papalia Martorell, 2014). Stages of
Development by Theorists Piaget concludes his cognitive developmental model with the formal
operational stage. Unlike the concrete operational stage, children of about eleven years old can think
abstractly. This cognitive accomplishment is crucial in academic learning because now he/she can
conduct complex mathematical problems such as algebraic problem solving (Papalia Martorell, 2014).

  • 2. Narrative Reflection Coming into Drexel, an important factor I learned was to have a clear understanding in the art and mechanics for literature composition. I learned that it would mature my writing to a higher level of thinking. My past experiences in my writing through high school English teacher feedback indicated my writing to be full of flaws. I often would receive feedback on my writing being awkwardly worded or lacking fluidity. The one valuable skill I learned from English courses here at Drexel was the idea that exposure to different readings, conceptual knowledge in writing and informal writing practices give practice, in order for me to find my own voice in writing. For instance, in my English 101 class, where my personal narrative for instance demonstrates an efficient dynamics, especially in the importance of articulating a message. Furthermore, for my drafts I received much advice which would be altered or incorporated within the final piece. Concerns such as the addition of dialogue, grammar and tense issues and overall style would be explicitly answered throughout the process of revising and editing my draft. General criticism, however I was given about my narrative was the idea that it needed clarity, by focusing on a specific event. The account of my summer experience in Pakistan such as how I felt before leaving the country to embracing the lifestyle of my relatives needed more depth, a central theme. Since my encounter of witnessing poverty first hand conveyed a powerful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Yellow Ribbon Short Story Let us use our imagination for a brief moment to connect with these characters to better understand what the various authors are trying to teach. As I ve illustrated below, figures from the short stories display exceptional examples of the following lessons. First, pretend to be in a position of loneliness. Next, imagine decision making, and how others poor decisions can provide a cause and effect. The three lessons I learned from reading the five stories were loneliness, an absence of love, and the importance of decision making. The first lesson I would like to emphasize on is loneliness. I love you! You can t leave me like this (Jones 102)! Is what the widow in Footprints screamed. In that moment of the story, she is not only struck with sadness but a sudden feeling of intense loneliness. Loneliness is horrid especially in cases severe as this one. I think this is the lesson the author is trying to teach. In the story Hate Bracelet the author captures the main character s anguish; in such a manner that it is disgusting to see Lisa behave the way she does. While Lisa s misery may not all be self inflicted, this is a perfect illustration of what alienating can cause if sustained for a great length of time. While reading this next story, I could relate to the seclusion Abigail s mother was giving her. In Yellow Ribbon the author is educating her readers that forcing isolation on people is atrocious. In my opinion, the stories I referenced demonstrate great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Characterism In The Black Witch By Laurie Forest The Black Witch, a Novel written by Laurie Forest and published May 2017, attempts to tell a fictional story about a young girl who confronts racism, elitism, and biasness; and grows into a hero for not just her people, but of all races. It is meant to be a story of redemption and learning to trust those she has been raised to hate and fear, a premise in which first intrigued me to purchase the book, however upon reading it fails to succeed in its mission, thus leaving me disappointed in the story. While it is the first book in a series, it is my belief that while there should be some lingering questions that makes a reader want to continue the series, the initial promise of fully trusting the other races should have been fulfilled. Elloren Gardner is the main character, and our POV for this story. We first meet her living in a rural town with her uncle and unaware of her status within her people. Her entire life she is raised with strict religious beliefs, for which she has no basis to question them. Part of these religious indoctrinations is that her people are pure and that all other races are evil, a belief she holds strongly to. We are first introduced to this belief in the very first chapter where Elloren states We Gardnerians are a pure blooded race, free from the stain of the heathen races that surround us. This ingratiates the reader that our main character is racist towards the other races that share this fictional world. On initial reading, I placed this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Milton Friedman Milton Friedman Michelle Meyer MBA604 November 6, 2016 Ron Myszkowski Milton Friedman In his paper, The Social Responsibilities of Business is to Increase its Profits (Friedman, 1970), Milton Friedman discusses social responsibility and what he feels it means in the business arena. He goes on to say A corporation is an artificial person (Friedman, 1970) and since this is not a real person, cannot have any responsibilities. While a corporation or business has a leader or board of directors, Friedman states these individuals cannot make decisions on social responsibility without eating into the profits of the company, the employee s wages, or even the price that the customer has to pay for the item. Upon my first review of Friedman s article, I thought he was throwing everything about a good company out the window. After reading it a second time, and realizing it was written in 1970, I believe he was stating the first responsibility of a company is to make a profit. Why else would you be in business? You cannot make money if you give your goods away for free! I believe this is the foundation of any business, to make a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Meursault And Raskolnikov How can the way a character acts or treats other people push the plot of a book forward? Fyodor Dostoevsky s novel Crime and Punishment and Albert Camus novella The Stranger both feature main characters guilty of committing murder; however, the the two main characters, Meursault and Raskolnikov, act very differently and so their fates end up very different. The main character of the The Stranger is a man simply called Monsieur Mersault. Camus presents Meursault as an honest person. This doesn t necessarily work in his favor, as he tells people repeatedly that things don t matter. He is very emotionally detached from everyone and everything. He does not even cry when his own mother dies, and he does not love the woman who is supposed to be his love interest. Meursault ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meursault, true to his characterization, doesn t really react. He feels no guilt because he does not feel like anything matters. The murder he committed was just another thing that happened. He is caught and put on trial for his crimes. The prosecutor uses his indifference toward the death of his mother and everything else to get him convicted. Even after his conviction, he doesn t show any emotion. Raskolnikov, however, immediately becomes paranoid about what he has done and thinks that everyone knows. He falls ill after his crime and the people around him start to believe he has gone insane. This leads people to suspect him of committing the crime. Perhaps had he not acted the way he did, no one would suspect of the crime. Despite actually having feelings after his crime, Raskolnikov also feels no guilt for killing the old woman because of his philosophy about extraordinary men. He simply dislikes the fact that he wasn t successful and therefore not an extraordinary man. Raskolnikov ends up confessing to the crime and because of his supposed insanity after the murder it is decided that he is not some simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Love in To His Coy Mistress and Remember Essay Love in To His Coy Mistress and Remember On first outlook it would that To His Coy Mistress and Remember both share the topic of love. They seem to be of direct relevance to each other, whereas upon closer inspection, To His Coy Mistress does not attempt to express any emotion at all. Instead, THCM is ultimately physical and portrays a man s desperation and lust, The persona of THCM has written this poem as a persuasion technique, with the addressee being his current girlfriend while the speaker from Remember appears to be leaving a message to her soul mate. The two poems both mention a lot about time, although in different tenses. THCM makes an abundance of references of the present tense such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The persona almost makes it seem like she is going somewhere on holiday. Other examples of euphemisms in Remember are When you can no more hold me by the hand meaning the physical bond will be severed, and It will be late then to counsel or to pray meaning she will be dead soon and the addressee won t be able to pray for her.. In contrast THCM is very graphic and tries to fill the readers mind with violent and gruesome images. Some examples of this are Then worms shall try that long preserved virginity , The grave s a fine and private place, But none, I think, do there embrace , Tear our pleasures with rough strife . Both poems contain a lot of metaphorical content, but again the alignment differs. In Remember the speaker uses metaphorical devices to soften the message that she is bringing across ( Gone far away into the silent land ) whereas in THCM the speaker uses metaphors to try and hide his sarcasm and infidelity ( Thy beauty shall no more be found; Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound My echoing song ). Both poems share a small part of irony. In Remember the persona is almost commanding the addressee to remember her, but then saying it s alright if he forgets. The other contradiction of this poem is that she says it s alright if he forgets her, but by writing a poem, she immortalised her existence. On the other had, THCM starts the adversative section 2 with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Origins Of The Ancient Civilization Could you imagine the entire population of The United States just disappearing? That is what happened to the Mayans. In a time span of only one hundred years, the whole Maya population was wiped out. There are several theories about the cause of their decline. Due to their disappearance the great Mayan inventions were lost in time until modern day anthropologists discovered that they made their own calendar and language along with many other things. What anthropologists do know for sure is that the Mayans were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization dating back to 250 B.C made up of more than 19 million people (smithsonian.com). Their empire centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala. The Maya people reached their peak of power around the 6th century A.D. The Mayans were successful in many ways; History.com, a website dedicated to informing the public about important historical information, states, The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork (Maya). The Mayans were an intelligent people, we know they created the Mayan calendar, had their own written language, they also had their own way of building large pyramids by hand. Through the use of several literary techniques such as symbolism, conflict, resolution, and irony, the author conveys through the protagonist, the overall theme of this short story. Indonesian Demographic Transition Essay Introduction The effects of population control programs on demographic change were not instant, and it takes long serious effort to encourage the improvement of economic development in a country. According to Paul J. Gertler (1994, p. 33), Population control is a key element in a country s ability to maintain and improve its economic and social welfare . Furthermore, this paper intends to explain why the change of population structure has an effect on the society s economic condition in Indonesia with examining the demographic variables. • 13. The Munich Agreement And The Anglo German Declaration For some European powers at the time, The Munich Agreement and the Anglo German Declaration was considered to have achieved a peace that was thought to be unconceivable. Unfortunately, the great claims of Neville Chamberlain did not come true. These agreements only delayed the inevitable between the great European powers and allowed Hitler to gather more territory with relative ease. This document between the powers of Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom outlined the terms and conditions under which Germany would annex a large portion of Czechoslovakia. Throughout this text, the historical context and significance of the Munich Agreement will be analyzed. The Munich Agreement was produced in hopes to stop Hitler; he was threatening to unleash war upon Europe if he did not get the Sudetenland. With Hitler s tyrannical pleas, the leaders of Britain, France, and Italy agreed to the annexation of a large portion of Czechoslovakia out of fear of war (Munich Agreement). It is important to note that Italy was an ally of Germany. Benito Mussolini, Italy s leader at the time, was one of Hitler s greatest inspirations during his rise to power. Germany, Italy, Britain, and France all came together in Munich, Germany to hold a conference to discuss Hitler s tyrannical demands. The agreement was signed on September 29th, 1938 and it formally allowed for Germany s annexation of the Sudetenland (Munich Agreement). The agreement came at a time where Europe seemed to be ... The awkward freshman with the polka dotted tie cinched around his neck, perfectly matching the white dots of his date s black dress, was the Boy Scout, the junior varsity soccer player who his parents and peers expected him to be. My first challenge as a semi openly gay man was precariously holding the rank of Life Scout in my local Boy Scout Troop. While gay scouts were technically banned from the organization at that time, they would have had to throw me out. There was a movement of scouts who, having earned the rank of Eagle, mailed back their badge accompanied by a letter stating they would not accept the organization s award until they allowed both gay scouts and adults. Thus, I was inspired to do the same and reject scouting s highest rank. Ironically enough, I was on the Amtrak train to New Mexico for my Philmont backpacking trip when the Supreme Court ruled banning gay marriage unconstitutional. The other scouts around me made horrific jokes about the news, but I remained silent. Finally, he finds himself at the door of M. Bienvenu, who welcomes him in, gives him a bed and food. Jean, although surprised by the bishop s kindness, steals silver dishes and flees in the night. Although others may disagree on the virtues of the bishop, saying it was his duty, The Bishop and the Candlesticks provide an example of virtues and the differences between good and evil. The Bishop is compared to that of a Saint, while Jean Valjean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was more than a smile an almost a radiance. On his forehead rested the indescribable reflection of an unseen light (PDF, p.405). This saintly character, as Bernard Mayo would describe, is more than the sum of its parts (Pojman, p. 414). Instead of killing the sleeping man of such great virtue, Jean Valjean spares his life and in the end finds a hero to base the rest of his life upon. O.J. Urmson would describe the bishop as doing his duty in contexts in which fear would lead most men not to do it, and does so without effort (Pojman, p. 417). The bishop took in the criminal when no one else would, even the site of Valjean made people afraid. According to Aristotle and his theory of means, Jean Valjean can see the bishop as saintly and his sister and housekeeper can see the bishop as foolhardy. Yet it is difficult to not see that Hugo is making a point to show the bishop as a saintly figure, one to demonstrate to Jean that there is good within and evil acts are not the only option for the ex convict. It was, as the website AV Club put it, a film steeped in misery and despair. If you can handle that warning that this film is definitely a downer and you re not likely to leave the theater humming a happy tune, there is much to recommend in this effort from the director of Robin Williams One Hour Photo, Mark Rumanek. These medications can truly be life savers, helping people get through some of the most difficult times in their lives, and there is certainly no shame in seeking a little help to get through a challenging period. However, most people are uncomfortable with the idea of taking a mood altering, prescription medication for their entire lives. Some people are concerned about the potentially unknown, long term side effects of anti depressants. Others just want to experience life naturally, without any drugs. There are several factors you need to consider before you make the decision to discontinue anti depressant therapy. First off, ask yourself if your depression really has gotten better. How has your mood been, generally speaking? Has your appetite returned to normal, or are you eating considerably more or less than you normally would? Are you sleeping better? How is your social life? Make sure that your depression really has lifted and that you haven t just learned to live with the symptoms of depression. If you ve been stable for at least six months, are feeling confident, have a good support system in place, and have the desire to stop treatment, it may be time to ask your doctor about stopping your anti depressant therapy. It is very important that you do not just stop taking your medicine. Your body has gotten used to your medication and abruptly stopping it could cause serious withdrawal symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, fainting, and even a return of your depression. Your doctor will likely wean you off of your medicine by gradually lowering your dose over a period of time, usually a few weeks to a few months. This can be frustrating for some people who see depression as a chapter in their life that they are eager to close. However, by following your dose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just as many students strive for excellence, others barely pass for mediocracy, and they drag diligent students down in their apathy of school. Chemical Equation: C6H5COONa + HCL C6H5COOH + NaCl Procedure: This experiment was started with a clear solution of sodium benzoate and HCl was added to it, ultimately producing benzoic acid. First, .3395 g of sodium benzoate was weighed, then it was dissolved in water, causing it to disassociate into ions. Next, 3M of HCl were added drop wise to the solution until it reached a pH of 2, thus introducing the hydronium ion. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once, the precipitate was ready to be placed in the oven there was not enough time to allow for it to dry for 10 minutes. The precipitate was only in the oven for about 5 minutes, therefore, when weighed there was excess liquid in the precipitate. The final weight of the precipitate was .45 g which was more than the amount that was started with. From this end weight, it can be deduced that there was excess liquid in the end result. Post Lab: 1. The experiment began with a clear solution of sodium benzoate, once 3 M of HCl were added to achieve a pH of 2, the clear solution became a precipitate. Sodium benzoate was water soluble, but the yield of benzoic acid became quite insoluble in water. 3b. Although, a low amount of HCl was used, the waste can still cause health risks and risks to the environment because it was not just one person doing the experiment, therefore increasing the waste of HCl. Water was also used to wash the vial to remove all solids that might be sticking to the side of the vial, therefore, wasting water, which is not green. 4. If you start adding NaOH to the solution in small amounts, NaOH neutralizes part of the HCl, (moles of HCl to moles of NaOH) so the pH begins to increase slowly, this raises the soluability. This allows for the equivalent point to be reached: moles of HCl = moles of NaOH. By continuing to add the NaOH, pH will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Other historians believe the republic is not such a failure as it seems in textbooks and online articles. Both sides unanimously agree that the Weimar Republic was a failed attempt at bringing democracy to a predominantly monarchical (and tyrannical) Europe. The majority of historians that agree the ill fated Weimar Republic was a smudge on Germany during the Interwar Period have a large amount of validities to support that claim. However, these validities also apply to the latter (to a lesser extent) , with one major problem resolved by the republic. One of the claims is that the Weimar Republic was simply too weak to establish itself as a political power in Germany, being contested by left and right wing extremist groups. There were often frequent rebellions in Germany, led by Communists and Marxists. The military at the time was far too outnumbered to quell these rebellions in their own jurisdiction. Another major impediment was the hyperinflation of the currency of that time, the German Mark. After the Great War, Germany was in a state of utter devastation and rebellion. The Kaiser had just fled Germany, and she was now without a leader, essentially cutting head off the snake. The military had also returned in a similar shape. The German economy was in ruins. • 36. Why Was Collectivisation How significant was collectivisation in Russia up to 1940? Collectivisation is debatably Stalin s most important policy and the pinnacle of Communism. Causing drastic changes for the Russian people, it could be argued that collectivisation was very significant in Russia up to 1940. It was a successful tool used to reaffirm Stalin s power and spread Socialism; it fueled industrialism, turning Russia into a global superpower once more; but most tragically, could be named the greatest agricultural and social disaster ever experienced in Russia. However others may argue that collectivisation was extraneous: industrialisation was the main cause of Russia s rising power; production did not increase; and it was the Great Purges and shows trials that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was the greatest social disaster to have hit Russian peasants, making it highly significant. During the period of collectivisation, grain production levels were at their lowest, taking 25 years to achieve pre collectivisation era levels, however, in order to improve the economy, grain procurement levels were unrealistically high. This generated a widespread famine and violence in rural Russia. Violence levels rocketed as riots against collectivisation broke out all over the countryside. Many were shocked by the mass slaughter and human misery that it had brought about. It is estimated that a staggering 10 15 million people died of hunger and violence during the years of collectivisation; this number alone highlights the significance of collectivisation. Furthermore, the famine increased as the Soviet government procured grain only for the sake of doing so. In Ukraine, millions were left to starve in what became known as the Black Famine as the government rooted out hidden stocks of grain, only to have them rot in warehouses. The situation was not helped by the elimination of kulaks either; the farming expertise had been purged, thus, there was no one to pull the peasants out of starvation. Hence, collectivisation was highly significant as it resulted in a prodigious number of deaths, and agriculturally, was a terrible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Physical Cognitive And Psychosocial Development Of... The following chapters reviewed the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of adolescence, which consists of children between the ages of eleven and nineteen. The sexual maturation process of puberty is a key developmental change that occurs in adolescent children. There are distinct transformations that characterize a girl s development from a boy s maturation. Girls experience the growth of breast tissue, an added layer of fat on her skin, and menstruation, while boys develop broad shoulders, enlargement of the testes and the production of sperm (Papalia Martorell, 2014). A child s cognitive processing continues to improve throughout this developmental phase. An adolescent can now carry out more complex problems through abstract reasoning. Structural and functional changes are also a cognitive transformation during this age range (Papalia Martorell, 2014). In the adolescent phase, a child s psychosocial development includes searching for identity, exploring his/her sexuality, and relying more on peers for support (Papalia Martorell, 2014). Stages of Development by Theorists Piaget concludes his cognitive developmental model with the formal operational stage. Unlike the concrete operational stage, children of about eleven years old can think abstractly. This cognitive accomplishment is crucial in academic learning because now he/she can conduct complex mathematical problems such as algebraic problem solving (Papalia Martorell, 2014). • 38. The Game of Life Essay THE GAME OF LIFE This exhibit is an attempt to reflect the beliefs, values and attitudes that I as an individual strongly embrace at this present time of my life. My beliefs, values and attitudes have been modified and evolved from experiences and interactions with family, school, friends and religion as my life has progressed. I felt the best way to portray these influences in a simplistic yet understandable manner was to clearly arrange them in the corners of a board. The centrepiece of this exhibit is the Chinese chessboard because it symbolises the journey I have taken till this present stage in life and also my Chinese heritage. The simplicity of this exhibit may seem somewhat unappealing but each and every feature which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Life however did not seem fair for them as they soon had to endure yet another battle against communism. Again, the haunting nightmare of escaping the shadow of death appeared before their eyes. Ships arrived from Taiwan and were ready to take on passengers. They departed in a small 67 metre Taiwanese ship, which had a total of 2300 passengers on board. My family had become Vietnamese boat people and had to face terrible hardship before arriving to Australia. They had to suffer two years of living in a ship without adequate food and escape from pirates in the middle of the ocean. Adults and children were dying on the ship because of malnutrition. Life was hanging by a piece of thread but because of the support and spirit of each other; they survived through the unutterable trauma which subsequently reinforced their relationship. Their experience has profoundly ingrained itself in me, allowing me to realise how special it is to have my family safe and close to me. These experiences which show endurance, courage and bravery, have directly affected the values, attitudes and beliefs which I now maintain as they allow me to understand the importance of my family as being something irreplaceable and invaluable. I value my family beyond anything else in the world and will continue to sustain this belief. My parents as well as my extended family have been crucial in providing the foundation for my beliefs, attitudes and values. I grew up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
