Utilitarianism And Cultural Relativism
Jeremy Bentham is a teleological/consequential philosopher or consequentialist, one who focuses on
the consequences and ends instead of intention and actions. Bentham s focus carries more weight than
that of Immanuel Kant or John Stuart Mill and their views. Jeremy Bentham s philosophy focuses on
measuring pain and pleasure for the greatest number of morally significant beings through their
actions. Bentham presents guidelines that measure the intensity, duration, (un) certainty, propinquity,
fecundity, and extent of the pain and pleasure that a certain action beholds and uses these
measurements to determine if the action promotes the greatest good (being pleasure in Bentham s
case) for the greatest number of morally significant beings (Hoff 2017).
On the other hand, Cultural Relativism, focuses on a specific culture and their beliefs, practices, and
ethical values of that culture and how the culture s values are right for that specific culture or group
(Hoff 2017). Jeremy Bentham s philosophy of Act Utilitarianism would possibly criticize cultural
relativism due to the idea that a specific culture and their beliefs, practices, and ethical values are right
for that specific culture. Overall, a culture would possess a higher number of morally significant
beings who are pleasured in that culture due to the idea that that was all they knew. Bentham would
use that idea to measure the pleasure and pain of the morally significant beings in that culture/society

Fear In The Odyssey
The Hero s Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell, is a set of stages a protagonist must undergo to
reinter into his known and normal world after facing many challenges. One specific challenge the hero
must face is described as the Supreme Ordeal, which is the moment the greatest fear is confronted. In
The Odyssey, Odysseus must kill the suitors who took over his household to reach the next stage of
his journey. As Odysseus slaughters the suitors in the hall of his home in Book 22, not only does he
enter the Supreme Ordeal stage of the Hero s Journey to face his greatest fear, but also is one phase
closer to reintegrating with society. Joseph Campbell, an American scholar, defined the Hero s Journey
in twelve separate stages within two halves, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While earlier books in The Odyssey describe Odysseus fear in his own words, Book 22 is the first
incident in which his fear is physically both described and displayed. This display of fear is further
expressed when Athena as Mentor asks Odysseus, Where s it gone, Odysseus your power, your
fighting heart? (22.236) This question not only represents the great fear circulating through the hero in
the moment, but also symbolizes his hitting bottom. Athena, once greatly praising the courage of
Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome with fear as more suitors and
enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes as far as to mock the fear that
overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your own house, your own wealth /
bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors? (22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors
shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena has towards them, giving Odysseus the
advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack
Odysseus and his comrades with spears, but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269).
Immediately after, Odysseus and his comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the
opposing men. After another round of slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of
the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining
suitors by Athena when she terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked /
wild, like herds stampeding, driven mad as the darting gadfly / strikes in the late spring when the ling
days come round (22.313 315). As the suitors coward in fear, the rush

History And History Of Math
History of Math in Egypt We use math almost daily in our lives, but how many of us think about the
history of math? Math began with early humans in the form of scratches and was carried into ancient
Egypt and Greece (Mastin).Today, Egypt s population is roughly 94 million (The World Factbook).
However, back in 3000 BC, scholars estimate that between one to four million people lived in the Nile
River Valley. The Egyptians called this region Kemet which translates to Black Land (O Connor and
Robertson; Lesko 135 44). As society began to be more complex and people began to trade for
services and goods, a need for a counting system arose (O Connor and Robertson). At the time, the
Egyptians used hieroglyphs that only scribes could write ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twenty five problems are written on the papyrus and these were translated by Egyptologist Vasily
Vasilievich Struve. These problems use algebra as well as geometry (Gardener). The Egyptians used
and created many forms of math that we still use today. Their advancements in both writing forms and
mathematics help people today in more ways than they could have imagined. Also, numerous things
were discovered when Jean François Champollion in 1822 translated hieroglyphs for the first time
(Lesko 135 44). Lastly, we no longer write in picture symbols that few people can decipher and still
use a base ten counting system. Math in Egypt and Today The Egyptians utilized many forms of math
in their daily lives. Among these were various algebra and geometry problems(Gardner). Around 2700
BC, a base ten counting system that used different symbols such as a stroke for the number one, a heel
bone symbol for 10, a coil of rope for 100, and a lotus plant for 1,000 was developed (Mastin). Base
ten is a numbering system that uses a decimal for any number smaller than one. Once a number
exceeds nine it moves to the next place (the tens place) (Russel). Furthermore, the Egyptians could
also estimate the area of a circle by guessing that if the area of a circle with a diameter of nine units
was close to the area of a square with sides of eight units, that the area of that circle could be
calculated by multiplying the diameter by 8⁄9 and then squaring it (Mastin). In order to find the

Tompkins Conservation
Deforestation, pollution, poaching, and soil abuse are just four of the innumerable factors that lead to
deleterious effects on the environment. With more and more trees falling under the determined
chainsaws and axe blows of illegal loggers and soil loss from tenuous irrigation methods, South
American governments have a rising concern to protect its ecosystem. But an unusual, and equally
controversial, solution came not within the restraining bounds of the country borders, but from the
efforts of the American multi millionaire and philanthropic conservationist, Douglas Tompkins.
Concerned about the ecology of South America, Tompkins purchased sumptuous strips of forest land
to shield it from the venomous ways of poachers and illegal loggers. ... Show more content on

The best solution to this imminent conflict would be for Tompkins to expropriate a sizeable chunk of
his land to national conservatories to ensure the public had sufficient access to public road, ancestral
grounds, and water and mineral rights. However, he should also maintain a steadfast determination to
keep most of his land as long as necessary to ensure it has recovered from past human interactions and
see it delivered safely into the hands of Argentine conservatories. As a whole, his campaign to
conserve the environment has been successful and beneficial both to him and the ecosystem. In
culmination, Tompkins, as a conservational philanthropist, has inaugurated his conservational efforts
to accumulate a sizeable portion of foreign nations. Due to lawmakers and local residents rising
concern of his control of natural resources and his property blocking public transportation routes, he
must devise a solution that will satisfy both conservational and public demands. Thus, the most
effective and equitable solution would be to sequester most of his land to local conservation efforts, so
as to ensure the government had adequate control over its natural resources and access to ancestral

Chartism Essay example
Task 1
What evidence is there in the extract above of the three explanations for Chartism s support that you
have learned about in Block 2, Unit 2. Making sense of history, and which if any, is stressed most
strongly by the speaker?
Part 1
In no more than 200 words, write a plan for the essay

Introduction 1) Explain the background and context of the extract. 2) Discuss the evidence for the
Chartism s support in terms of economic pressure, national political movement and inclusive cultural
community. 3) The essay will explore how the three factors were important in the speech for gaining
support for Chartism and which proved to be the more dominant factor.

The essay will conclude by revealing through the use of evidence which was the dominant factor in
the speech in gaining support
Economic Pressure was used in the speech regularly to show the large division between the rich and
the poor. The speaker refers to the rich unnaturally elevated , weight of taxation, misrule and
oppression . Destitution in horrid form stalks through street, lane and thourghfare emaciated frames .
The terminology reflects on the economic pressures that the poor endured, high tax and poor working
conditions that often led to illness and death. He emphasised how the richer of the society, the
aristocracy, were in exclusive possession of power . This speech would have stirred the emotions of
the crowds as they heard how hard their lives were to those belonging to the upper classes. The
speaker creates horrid, desperate images of the poorer classes insufferable despair, toll of the death
bell to highlight how hard their lives were. (Briggs, 1959, P.50) a secondary source reflected how
Chartism seems to have been strongest in the two kinds of places... centres of decaying or contracting
industry and new or expanding single industry towns . Briggs s writing shows that Chartism was
prominent in only certain areas such as those of industry. Whereas, almost non existent in completely
agricultural villages .

David And Goliath And Casey At Bat Essay
In the poem Casey at Bat and story David and Goliath, a comparison and contrast will show several
differences and similarities between David and Casey. The first similarity between David and Casey is
that both of them are very confident in the task that they have to accomplish. Text from Casey at Bat
says, There was pride in Casey s bearing and a smile on Casey s face. And when, responding to the
cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, No stranger in the crowd could doubt twas Casey at the bat. David
and Goliath says, Today the Lord will help me defeat you. I ll knock you down and cut off your head,

He killed him without even using a sword. Secondly, this quote explains how David killed Goliath and
succeeded greatly.Secondly, a difference between Casey and David is that Casey had an encouraging
crowd at his baseball game that was very confident in him, whereas David had no encouragement
from the people around him. Casey at Bat says, Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty
yell; It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell; It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled
upon the flat, For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat. As the first quote explains how
Casey had a huge crowd cheering him on that was very confident in him. In David and Goliath it says,
Some soldiers overheard David talking, so they told Saul what David had said. Saul sent for David,
and David came. 32 Your Majesty, he said, this Philistine shouldn t turn us into cowards. I ll go out
and fight him myself! 33 You don t have a chance against him, Saul replied. You re only a boy, and he
s been a soldier all his life. No one had faith in David and no one thought that David would succeed,
which is explained in this quote.A final difference between Casey and David is that Casey was

The Influence Of Napster s Contribution To The Culture Of...
Throughout the course of history there have been many technological advances that have made a
tremendous impact on human culture and the way our society functions. Inventions like the
automobile, television, and the internet have all contributed to improve the quality of living as we
know it. One major contribution to media and our culture was the development and rise of sound
recording. Since it s inception sound recording has evolved and adapted to fit our ever growing need
for media. Thanks to this reason it remains heavily integrated into our culture. As sound recording

Not only did Napster take the concept of music sharing to a new level, it changed the way music was
listened to and how the music industry would begin to market popular music. With the internet
becoming a fully formed popular resource, Napster was a free online service that specialized in
sharing MP3 files over the internet via P2P (Peer to peer) file sharing. P2P allowed users to gain
access to music; which usually is paid content, by searching for a Host (the source of the content) that
would upload and distribute this content for free. This meant that everyone across the world who had
access to internet could find libraries of albums from various recording artists that they would
generally have to pay hundreds of dollars to listen to. What made this so appealing to the masses was
that they could access it all for free. This significantly impacted the music industry because it had no
official way to control such a vast network. Why would consumer want to pay for music when they
could find it for free? The music industry which essentially makes a profit from record sales believed
that this online service would cost them millions. Rather than the music industry making sales from
each record sold, one Napster user could purchase a record, upload it to the service and then hundreds
of other users could download it for free. Those hundreds of users no longer need to purchase the
record themselves because they have already gained access to

Gender Stereotyping Of Sports Media
Gender stereotyping in sports media is something we see everyday in magazines and on TV. Since
sports were invented, males have dominated one of Canada s largest pastimes. Reasons for this being
physicality and strength, but as time progressed women began to become more involved in the culture
of sport. Today there is almost an equal amount of women participating in sports as man, yet women
are still not being represented with the same approach as men. About a month ago I found a video
online that followed a sports reporter who was trying to make a point about gender stereotyping within
sports media. He would interview professional male athletes but rather than ask them the typical
interview questions we see in male sports, such as has your workout routine changed since... but rather
asked them questions that are typically related to female athlete interviews such as one that was asked
to swimmer Michael Phelps Shaving your body hair gives you an edge in the pool, but how about your
love life , or any comments about reports about your girlish figure . At the end of the video they show
real women athletes being asked these types of questions in real interviews. The men s reactions of
embarrassment to disgust vs. the women s reactions of showing no surprise to being asked these
derogatory questions, says it all. It is no surprise that the sexualization of female athletes is something
all too common in sports media. We ll be looking into the idea of sexualisation in

psychologist cleared up this worry. The psychologist stated in the article that Kids who are good
spellers [academically] are good spellers in instant messaging, and kids who are poor spellers in

in school do not relate negatively. This study is a positive correlation however, the coefficient is very
low. Children have learned that their texting language and their language at school is completely
separate. The are easily able to go back and forth from one to another once they have become
accustomed to both of these languages. Students know that there is a difference between correctly

How Is Romeo And Juliet Selfish
I do love nothing in the world so much as you.. William Shakespeare. Many mothers feel this way for
their children, they show infinite love for their children and would risk their lives for them. This is not
the case in William Shakespeare s playwright, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Lady Montague and
Lady Capulet do not show supportive love for their children, and they never risk anything for them.
Romeo and Juliet, snuck out to express their love for each other because their mothers were too selfish
to let them be together. Although each mother is selfish, weak, and unable to understand their child,
Lady Capulet and Lady Montague ultimately never show strong affection for their children.

married. An example of this is, Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn The gallant young, and

(3.3.115) When she says it will make Juliet happy to marry Paris she is wrong because she does not
know who is going to make Juliet happy. Additionally, when Juliet says she does not want to marry
Paris Lady Capulet says that she can deal with her father. This is weak because Lady Capulet does not
care to see if Juliet is happy she just wants what is best for her. Lady Montague is weak because she
does not make an effort to talk to Romeo about anything he is doing at the time. After Romeo has slain
Tybalt, Lady Montague does not talk to Romeo to comfort him or to ask him if he is ok. Also, at the
end of the play, after Romeo kills himself, she does not think she has anything else to live for so she
kills herself. This is weak because she could have tried to prevent this tragedy from happening. All in

Erickson Reflection
This week we learned about Erickson and his theory on development. Erikson studied under the Freud
method, but unlike Freud, Erikson actually did research on infants and children as they were
developing. I really enjoyed learning about Erikson considering I have a 5 month old at home growing
away. It was interesting to compare these videos to where my baby was in development. Another
interesting thing about this module was the James Marcia Identity Status which consists of 4 parts
foreclosure, achievement, diffusion, and moratorium. Diffusion is when you have not really made a
commitment to anything yet. This is typically a high school junior/senior or even college
freshman/sophomore. They have not yet figured out what they want to do with life yet and honestly,
aren t too worried about. In my diffusion score I received a 5 meaning I guess I am in the middle. I m
not too sure if I agree with this accusation or not, but maybe that is why I scored this number.
Although I had my career path figured out and I was on the path to it up until a few months ago I feel
as though I have started testing the waters in other areas now. These areas are still very close to what
my original plan was. Now that I have a family I am focused more now than ever to pick the perfect
career for not just me, but my family. I feel as though I have always been well organized planned

The Ethics Of Care, And Virtue Ethics
I am currently a computer science major and plan on becoming a computer programmer. My love for
technology including video games is unique along with my morals. Through the course we covered
five moral philosophies which can fit into my life. There is not a perfect moral philosophy, which is
why I will be taking bits and parts from the five different one to make one which fits my life style and
morals. The five I will be dissecting are, Utilitarianism, Social Contract Theory, Kant, The Ethics of
Care, and Virtue Ethics. Utilitarianism is a theory which I can agree with, mostly. I would like to do
what makes the majority of people happy, however, it might not always be the correct decision. An
example would be people at a workplace each decide to steal five dollars and not tell (no one gets
caught), this would make everyone happy but is it really morally correct. It also depends on the
outcome, if the consequences outweigh the happiness then the act is not ethical. There are also other
factors which can come into play, one scenario about the train going down the tracks. You can save a
bunch of people by switching the train to another track, but the person on the other track is someone
you love. This one person means more to you than just one unit of happiness which does not follow
the rule, everyone s happiness is the same. Utilitarianism brings a great way to make ethical decisions,
but it cannot be used in every situation which is why it only needs to be applied when

Masculism In Things Fall Apart, By Chinua Achebe
According to Merriam Webster, the definition of masculism is an advocate of male superiority or
dominance in social rights. Masculism is one of the main theme shown throughout the book, Things
Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe. In the novel, women seem that they do not have any equal rights as
men. Also, they have little power in their society and are often mistreat by men. However, women
play key roles throughout the novel diversely. Through the main character, Okonkwo, women s role
are well described in the novel. Women represent a symbol of wealth and education, and in the other
hand, they represent both weak and strong. Okonkwo, the main character in the novel, is respected

Mise-En-Scene, Editing And Cinematographic Elements In The...
The Godfather , a crime noir film produced in 1972, is about an aged patriarch of a famous mafia
dynasty that transfers control of his business to his disinclined son. It was directed by Francis Ford
Cappola and stars actors such as Al Pacino and Marlon Brando. The film s numerous achievements,
specifically in the opening sequence, stem from the exemplary utilization and integration of misé en
scene, editing, and cinematographic elements. Mise en scene is a key element in the representation of
a character. For example, the film begins with a slow jazz soundtrack, a characteristic of thriller films
during the 1970 s. Then a plain black background streches across the screen, setting the stage for what
is about to appear in front of us. Black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene is edited with a very slow pace that creates a sense of calm and suggests the control that
Don Corleone has over the situation. The sequence begins with a close up on Amerigo Bonasera as he
stares in the camera while it zooms out, telling the audience about his daughter s rape. William
Reynolds and Peter Zinner, the lead editors of the film, used this shot, that spans the next three
minutes of the film, to add a sense of insecurity and rising tension. It also is used to reveal Bonasera is
talking to a mysterious figure disguised by the shadows and that three other men are present, but
without giving the setting of the scene or who these men are. Then, they break the three minute shot
by giving the audience their first glance at the mysterious figure in the shadows. They cut to a medium
shot of Don Corleone, the leader of this organized crime dynasty, finally revealing this shadowy figure
to the audience, relieving them of some tension. The camera shifts location again in order to reveal the
scene, something like an establishing shot. Here, they reveal four male characters, all dressed in suits,
and the only lights coming from the slats in the blinds and the sole artificial light on the right side of
the room. Don Corleone is also placed in the center of this shot with every other character facing him,
giving him a sense of power. Next, they cut to a medium shot of the godfather sitting

Does joining a minority organization affect the social, mental, and psychological being of minority
students on predominantly white campuses?
In today s society, Predominately white institutions and campus climate can contribute and play a key
role to the success and achievement of minority students. In the twenty first century, African American
(black) students will continue to enroll in predominantly white institutions (PWIs) at greater rates than
black students enrolling at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); yet, if this current
trend continues, over half of black students at PWIs will fail to persist and graduate (Allen, 1992).

The purpose of this paper is to analyze does joining a minority organization affect the social, mental,
and psychological being of minority students on predominantly white campuses over those who don t.
Being mandated legally to open their doors, predominantly white campuses and admissions have tried
to improve and accommodate the comfort levels of minority students in order to shape the student s
overall experience by allowing ethnic and multicultural organizations, establishing diversity programs
and also by hiring minority faculty (Benton, 2001). Most predominately white institutions try to
accept more minority students and adopt more recruitment efforts because they realize that their
school is not diverse and in most cases want a non traditional setting.
The overall college experience is in reality the transition and introduction to adulthood from youth.
College itself is a challenge; However it also offers and open up door to yet many opportunities. The
social atmosphere that s compared to High School; the college experience is much different and a
whole other ball game I should say. The norms that you are used to back at home aren t the same in
college especially if you are a minority and choose to attend a predominantly white institution.
Attending college can have a profound impact in one s life including social, mental, and psychological
factors. Having a college or higher learning

Is Belisa Crepusculario s Character In Two Words By Isabel...
Two Words is a short story written by Isabel Allende. In it, Allende uses the laborious background and
strong personality of her protagonist, Belisa Crepusculario, to highlight that a female can be
empowered in a patriarchal society by developing her personality and linguistic charms. Belisa is
brave, determined, tough and well educated and stands in opposition to the figure of the submissive,
effeminate, and innocent traditional woman. In the first location of the story, Allende demonstrates
that Belisa has a strong sense of survival that she had developed through the hardships in her
childhood, which ultimately guide her through life threatening situations, such as hydropenia and
being kidnapped. She grows up in a desperately poor family, and, when she was 12, she had no
occupation or virtue other than having withstood hunger and the exhaustion of centuries. (1) She has

Burt s Bees Case Analysis

Evaluation of Opportunities in the case
To evaluate the opportunities for Burt s Bees in the case we would need to do an internal analysis of
Burt s Bees i.e. look into its strengths, weaknesses, threat and opportunity vis à vis the competition
and the market scenario in 1997. Burt s Bees success was hard won through 18~ to 24 months of
pruning after the company s move from Guilford, Maine in 1994. Production was extremely labor
intensive in Maine due to the large supply of low paid unskilled labor, Burt s Bees had to automate
production in North Carolina, though, to minimize the cost of its highly paid skilled labor. Thus it is

The other players are investing huge amounts on expanding their distribution network and hence
expanding their customer base. Another internal threat is that Burt s Bees does not have the capability
to expand their manufacturing units and forward integrate them to their own retail outlets. This is not
only a huge risk but also a huge investment which if fails can take the company with it to the dust.
TWOS Analysis
Now, to analyze these facts and points in a better manner we should do a TOWS analysis. In this
analysis we try to see the Strength and weaknesses vis à vis the threats and opportunities in the
following manner:
Strength
Weakness
Opportunity
Match strengths to specific opportunities
You need to invest to overcome weakness or to compensate or negate

Threat
These are strengths that can be used to reduce or avoid the consequences of a threat There may be
little that you can do to avoid the impact. Create or import

This analysis can be done for Burt s Bees:
Strength
Weakness
Opportunity
The strength and opportunity lies in the all natural secret of Burt s Bees
The second thing to be mentioned here is the retail presence and the provision present for expansion in
this area
To tap the opportunity of leveraging on the all natural products, huge investment in terms of media

As you look into the night sky, what do you see? Little bright dots that you can barely see? Edwin

how far away each Cepheid laid as well as how far to each nebula and discovered they were too

The support to back this up is light from other galaxies and how the spectral lines almost shifted

America says it is going green, but if this is true how can we outlaw a plant. The plant I speak of is
marijuana. This plant has been around before man and will be here when it leaves. Some people have
the belief that marijuana is a harmful drug with many adverse side effects, but the truth is marijuana
has been shown to improve health in certain cases. Cannabis has been known to slow down cancer cell
production, delay muscle spasms, and relieve nausea in chemotherapy patients. Aside from medical

The high you get from cannabis is a peaceful, relaxing, and dazed feeling. It is not a violent up beat
impulse high. Weed mellows you, and makes you think about life in different ways. There is no proof
that weed is a gateway drug that leads to others. The reason we believe this is because politics and
corporate companies want you to consume their products. Tobacco has over four thousand chemicals
in just one cigarette. Weed has only one chemical tetra hydro cannabinol. This is what gives you a
euphoric feeling. It poses no threat to humans, but it does make you a bit sluggish. It has the same
effects of alcohol but less harmful to your body. There are many beliefs that marijuana is a gateway
drug, but this is untrue. In fact marijuana has been proven to be a lifelong drug of choice. This means
that people often never try another drug once they try marijuana. In accordance to a recent study weed
has actually benefitted drug abusers. Heroin addicts who are going through withdrawals often have to
smoke marijuana to ease their body due to the heroin that is affecting them. Over time people have
slandered marijuana and mocked it, but we should just accept it for what it is. It is a plant. Not only is
it a plant, it is one we can benefit from in more than one way. Whether it is a boost in economy,
medicinal purposes, or just everyday use marijuana has room for legal expansion and profit. We can
make a difference in the America we live in. we can change the way we look at weed, and the people
who use it. Basil and oregano are all herbs why not are able to grow an herb and use the remains for a
number of things. In transition, the points that have been displayed to should help the American
people to decide the right choice to make. There are far more important issues to debate over, but the

The Importance Of Colonialism And English Language In...
English language is a language globally recognised due to colonialism and western supremacy
practiced throughout centuries. Specifically, in Singapore, English language attained supremacy due to
colonialism, which promulgated English to be dominant as it was used to design legislatures in the
island during the British occupation. In today s society, English is preached for its economical benefits
as it allows access to the global world, giving way for English language to maintain dominance in
Singapore. However, these practice of hegemony results in the disruption of ethnic identity. For the
purpose of this essay, I would be focusing on how the English language is dominant in Singapore due
to its economical benefits and thus the resultant effect of ethnic identity being non represented and
disregarded. Economy is the driving factor of Singapore s policies, which is why I am taking an
economical perspective on the reason for English language s prominence. Dominant language sets the
pace of the country and its growth due to its influences. It paves the identity of the country as
language is a unifying factor that brings people together under a common identity, especially in a
heterogeneous country like Singapore. Despite, disrupting the ethnic identity forSingaporeans, English
is dominant in Singapore because it is the medium of communication favoured by the government in
commerce and education. This raises concerns such as complete westernisation of the state, which

Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory
Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory
Introduction
Karl Marx believed that struggle or conflict among classes was an inevitable feature of capitalism
based on the argument that various groups in a society or social classes perpetually fight and compete
for resources and power, hence the groups remains polarized against each other. The Karl Marx s
conflict theory views behavior from the perspective of conflict or tension among two or more groups.
The conflict does not necessarily translate to violence but rather takes the form of struggle within
political negotiations, business, philosophical ideologies or personal attitudes. A critical analysis of
Karl Marx conflict theory s point of view reveals that the conflict of social classes is the major aspect
of societal conflict, and is mostly propagated by the differences in economic statuses and inequalities
in distribution.
Human societies have been class based in some way and the class factor has been the most basic
dividing or differentiating factor between broad social groups. In the economic sphere that Marx s
theory focuses on, there is a class that own and control means of economic production which could be
referred to as the upper class, and there is the class that maybe own nothing, but their ability to sell
their labor power in return for wages which could be referred to as the middle or low class. From that
understanding, and based on the conflict theory, one might argue that unequal distribution of resources
and access

The Importance Of Freedom In America
Freedom meant multiple things for the people who had endured and survived enslavement in America.
Freedom meant education, being with family, church organizing, voting, and equal rights as white
people. Former slaves informed slave owners that their devotion and loyalty never reflected their true
feelings. As slavery ended families were able to reunite. Freedom also meant land. Special field order
#15 was issued on January 16, 1865 by General William T. Sherman. A 30 mile tract of land was set
aside by the military directive, this land was along the Atlantic coast from Charleston, South Carolina,
245 miles south to Jacksonville, Florida. Sherman reserved this land for black families as white
owners just abandoned the land. The Port Royal Experiment was an effort by northern white
missionaries, educators, and businessmen in the Sea Islands near Beaufort, South Carolina, to
transform former slaves into educated, reliable and industrious wage earners. Congress established the
Bureau of Refugees, Freedman, and Abandoned Lands in February 1865 to assist black and white
Southerners left destitute by the Civil War. The South Homestead Act was passed by Congress in
1866, this set aside over three million acres of land for former slaves and loyal white Southerners to
farm following the Civil War. In 1866 bureau officials tried to force freedmen to sign labor contracts
with white landowners. Black men who refused to sign could be arrested. The most important

Understanding just how temptation, culture and relationships can be interpreted as magic reveals
how these authors use their genre to inform the population of the failing human condition.
When the term magic is brought up in any kind of media, the immediate thought of
most people is fairy dust, unicorns, or J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter series; although the magic
in Magical Realism is truly none of that at all. The magic in Magical Realism comes from the
characters in the novels, through their thoughts and actions they create the magic that exists in
these novels. In these themes the magic reveals itself, they appear as unstoppable forces in
human nature that cannot be derived to an elementary force, and thus appears magical.
Temptation for instance, appears in A Hundred Years of Solitude and Invisible Cities to lure men
to unspeakable fates that impact the rest of their lives and the lives of the people around them.
Although the essence of temptation is an unexplainable force that exists blatantly to lead
humanity away from morality, the same force exists within the other two reoccurring themes that
are seen in Magical Realism. For example, relationships are emphasized and seen often in Life of
Pi and A Hundred Years of Solitude and are put in place to show how they play a key role in the
stories. The same force that deals with temptation

My Design Of Sighting A Gun
I. The purpose for my design is to speed up the process of sighting a gun in, the scope to take into
compensate the parabolic launch of a bullet, and to hit to target bulls eye. Sighting in a gun requires a
long trial and error process that any hunter, marine, or police sniper would agree upon. As a bullet is
fired from a rifle it rises a few inches for about one hundred yards or more where it descends below
the axis of the barrel. The scope looks like any other scope but will account for the parabolic launch
and relocate its self to the correct position for the most accurate shot. Nikon is a company that
produces quality scopes and would be a good contestant for the idea. They support their products
being brighter, clearer, precise, and rugged, but these are just a few of the attributes knowledgeable
hunters commonly use to describe Nikon riflescopes. Nikon is determined to bring hunters, shooters,
and sportsmen a wide selection of the best hunting optics money can buy while at the same time
pushing the envelope to create revolutionary capabilities for the serious hunter (Nikon). The design
would also need an electrical engineer to design the wiring and microchips/sensors, but a mechanical
engineer from Power Electrics would also be needed to fit the motor for the positioning of the scope. I
would like to arrange a meeting for all of us to discuss and perfect the idea. II. The scope, Buck Slayer
by Slade Mills and Nikon, will be about the same size as any other

Research Paper
The problem regarding privacy is one of the foremost discussed topics in today s society where
everyone has an abundant flow of information. Digitalized personal data and record of daily life can
be spread through the internet very easily; thus, it made means of protecting that information more
important than any time in the past, changing today s perception about privacy from the past.
Furthermore, spread in use of smart phones advanced the internet by far more, creating many more
service available as well. This which that changes people s perception and use of data mentioned
above due to increased importance of protecting personal data.
While the advancement of digital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Spanish Data protection Agency concluded Google to find and delete 80 some articles that
included complainants names. Spain decided on the case, concluding that people s right to be
forgotten or right to oblivion has been violated. The right for people s privacy has changed over time
as technology improved. As technology improved, one s history stays on digital record much longer
than days of analog. Trying to prevent the harm that may result from this introduced people the right
to be forgotten. It is new idea people started to see as digital advancement, especially use of internet
became widely accessible to the public. Not only in Spain, but also in all across Europe, this newly
introduced right, right to be forgotten, is under being considered. On July 6th, 2011, European
Parliament decided on a comprehensive approach on personal data protection in the European Union ;
this resolution right to be forgotten is critical need to grant people their private rights.
From The Right to Privacy by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis in 1890, the idea of a right to be let
alone is introduced. With an introduction of the camera and other technologies, different means of
violation of people s privacy was threatening the society. Warren and Brandeis argued that due to the
new technologies and advancements, the need to protect the right to be let

Race And Racism In The Movie Glory Road
Throughout the years racism has been a problem in this world and is why I choose to watch Glory
Road. The movie also teaches that in this life things can be accomplished no matter what the obstacles
are for example your race. So let s take a look at the three cultural conflicts In Glory Road, the first
being colored people versus white people, second is a poor school versus rich school, and lastly
players versus coach. So the first cultural conflict in Glory road is colored people versus white people
and it s the most important issue in the movie. In the movie blacks are treated prolly just because of
their skin color. A really sad scene from the movies was when Texas Western went to eat at a dinner
and when Ched went to use the restroom he was jumped by three white men. Another reason from
Glory road was when Texas Western went to play other colleges they were usually welcomed by other
schools by throwing trash at the Texas Western players in addition when the players names were be
called for the starting line up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Glory Road from the beginning the movie tries to inform us that Texas Western is a poor school.
Seeing that when the owner of the school offered coach Don a job he said that he to stay in the same
dorm as the students because that s all they could afford. Due to the fact the owner said his school was
on a low budget. Then when Don went to the school gymnasium the floor was squeaky and the lights
were messed up. Funny thing was that the birds were leaving on top of the ceiling lights. Additionally
before Don accepted the job of coaching Texas Western men basketball the owner said he could only
recruit seven players and when Don sent his assistant coach to New York to recruit some players,
coach Don had to pay his flight from his own pocket. Several players he tried recruiting denied him
due to that fact he was offering players full

What Is Your Favorite Person Essay
Your favorite person: a borderline personality discovery
For the past weeks I have been busy. My minimalism goals is going well at my own pace (I ll will
write about that one day) and every day there is something to do for me. Now that I have a free
weekend, I can sense that I might need people more than I think.
Being raised in a loving family, yet keeping things all to myself by playing in my room by myself,
made myself think I like being alone more than anyone. It s no denyiable fact that I m introverted, so I
need some rest from social interactions, yet the way I need people is too interesting to ignore.
So what do I mean when I speak about a favorite person ?
See it as a crush. You find the person interesting, you like to know everything about them, you like
their looks, their personality and like to hang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You ll notice the things you have in common, you ll think about them by the minute, you get happy
when they text you back, yet get really sad and even depressed when they are busy. You want to know
more and more about them and want to hang out with them as much as possible. You re basically
eating the palm of their hands.
I use the comparison as being a dog who is filled with joy when they see their master. Wagging their
tail, doing everything the master wants and being very happy when they pat your head. And I literally
want to be patted on my head when my favorite person compliments me.
It s not really a crush anymore, is it? It s about power and being submissive to everything they want
you to do.
But, I have to add, sometimes a favorite person can be someone you fell in love with and that s when
it may get dangerous and confusing.
You can have a favorite person who is a friend, a family member, teacher, collegue, about anyone you
may meet. Because it s so hard to figure out wether it s love or an obsession, it s something which
makes BPD a different experience from someone who doesn t have the

Benjamin Franklin Research Paper
Benjamin Franklin is known best for being the president of the United States or you may know him
for his inventions or his writings, but there is so much more to him than just that. He is a man of
wisdom and integrity. This is why I chose him as my figure of interest in my research. Franklin s life
was full of wisdom and science, as he was a well known writer, inventor, printer, as well as, a
founding father of the United States. I had the opportunity to sit down and converse with Franklin
during his time here. With this opportunity, I decided that I would lay out some questions for him to
answer. This paper is a summary of our discussion.
As we all know, slavery was a huge part of Franklin s life time, so my first question pertained to ...

I asked him if he thought his Join or Die cartoon would be as well known as it is today? And also what
did it mean to him? He answered with explaining that he didn t think that it would make such an
impact. He just print it to state that we needed to come together as one union to defeat the French and
Indians. He also explained that during the time, fear ignited a person s emotions and produced a call to
action. So basically trying to scare everyone into coming together. During this time it was not
uncommon to scare people into doing something. Next, he told me why the cartoon was so important
to him he said that he wanted to defeat the French and Indians just as much as the next guy, but what
amazed me was what he told me next. Franklin said that there was a wise tale saying that a severed
snake would come back to life if all the pieces were put back together before sunset and that is why
they chose a snake to be represented in this

Influences Of Moby Dick
The crucial effects that influenced Herman Melville to write his famous novel, The Moby Dick. From
here on, Herman Melville had many life experiences that gave him ideas to write a novel about this
tragic experience he had heard before. This tragic experience was the main influence in his life to
compose his famous novel, The Moby Dick . Speaking about this, Herman was impressed by the fact
he heard about this tragic incident that occurred on November 20, 1820. In fact, the ship or American
whaler where everything happened was named The Essex. The Essex was Herman s main influence to
write the novel due to the fact this novel is based on the real life experiences Herman went through.
Anyhow, Herman was not part of this incident even though he was stuttered and was shocked by this.
Eventually, the crew and the captain, George Pollard Jr, were able to survive and later on return to
Nantucket with the hope of finding another ship to captain. However, all of this ... Show more content

Herman started to feel a little disappointed in himself because he realized his novel was not selling
much at the moment. Therefore, it was not even close to the popularity this novel has in this present
time. To illustrate, The Moby Dick only sold around three thousand copies in Melville s lifetime.
Melville s thought the influences he wrote this novel from where not enough to reach the goal he had
with this novel. In particular, The Essex and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne was his
second influence to write the novel. Regarding this, Herman Melville dedicated The Moby Dick to
Nathaniel Hawthorne but he was happy with the fact of his literary results. Notably, Herman had a
huge inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne due to the fact he is one of the most respected and
admirable writers internationally. Herman had the opportunity to meet Hawthorne right after he
finished writing The Moby Dick in

  • 2. Utilitarianism And Cultural Relativism Jeremy Bentham is a teleological/consequential philosopher or consequentialist, one who focuses on the consequences and ends instead of intention and actions. Bentham s focus carries more weight than that of Immanuel Kant or John Stuart Mill and their views. Jeremy Bentham s philosophy focuses on measuring pain and pleasure for the greatest number of morally significant beings through their actions. Bentham presents guidelines that measure the intensity, duration, (un) certainty, propinquity, fecundity, and extent of the pain and pleasure that a certain action beholds and uses these measurements to determine if the action promotes the greatest good (being pleasure in Bentham s case) for the greatest number of morally significant beings (Hoff 2017). On the other hand, Cultural Relativism, focuses on a specific culture and their beliefs, practices, and ethical values of that culture and how the culture s values are right for that specific culture or group (Hoff 2017). Jeremy Bentham s philosophy of Act Utilitarianism would possibly criticize cultural relativism due to the idea that a specific culture and their beliefs, practices, and ethical values are right for that specific culture. Overall, a culture would possess a higher number of morally significant beings who are pleasured in that culture due to the idea that that was all they knew. Bentham would use that idea to measure the pleasure and pain of the morally significant beings in that culture/society and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fear In The Odyssey The Hero s Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell, is a set of stages a protagonist must undergo to reinter into his known and normal world after facing many challenges. One specific challenge the hero must face is described as the Supreme Ordeal, which is the moment the greatest fear is confronted. In The Odyssey, Odysseus must kill the suitors who took over his household to reach the next stage of his journey. As Odysseus slaughters the suitors in the hall of his home in Book 22, not only does he enter the Supreme Ordeal stage of the Hero s Journey to face his greatest fear, but also is one phase closer to reintegrating with society. Joseph Campbell, an American scholar, defined the Hero s Journey in twelve separate stages within two halves, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While earlier books in The Odyssey describe Odysseus fear in his own words, Book 22 is the first incident in which his fear is physically both described and displayed. This display of fear is further expressed when Athena as Mentor asks Odysseus, Where s it gone, Odysseus your power, your fighting heart? (22.236) This question not only represents the great fear circulating through the hero in the moment, but also symbolizes his hitting bottom. Athena, once greatly praising the courage of Odysseus, hit new heights of rage (22.234) when he became overcome with fear as more suitors and enemies gathered in the hall, waiting to kill him. Athena then goes as far as to mock the fear that overcame Odysseus when she states now you ve returned to your own house, your own wealth / bewail the loss of your combat strength in a war with suitors? (22.242 243) This emphasis on suitors shows both their inner weakness and the disgust Athena has towards them, giving Odysseus the advantage in the slaughter. This advantage is demonstrated when six of the suitors attempt to attack Odysseus and his comrades with spears, but Athena sent the whole salvo wide of the mark (22.269). Immediately after, Odysseus and his comrades return the attack and successfully kill four of the opposing men. After another round of slaughtering success, Odysseus begins to overcome the fear of the Supreme Ordeal. This fear is not lost; however, for it is turned around and placed on the remaining suitors by Athena when she terrifies the suitors out of their minds, and down the hall they panicked / wild, like herds stampeding, driven mad as the darting gadfly / strikes in the late spring when the ling days come round (22.313 315). • 4. History And History Of Math History of Math in Egypt We use math almost daily in our lives, but how many of us think about the history of math? Math began with early humans in the form of scratches and was carried into ancient Egypt and Greece (Mastin).Today, Egypt s population is roughly 94 million (The World Factbook). However, back in 3000 BC, scholars estimate that between one to four million people lived in the Nile River Valley. The Egyptians called this region Kemet which translates to Black Land (O Connor and Robertson; Lesko 135 44). As society began to be more complex and people began to trade for services and goods, a need for a counting system arose (O Connor and Robertson). At the time, the Egyptians used hieroglyphs that only scribes could write ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Twenty five problems are written on the papyrus and these were translated by Egyptologist Vasily Vasilievich Struve. These problems use algebra as well as geometry (Gardener). The Egyptians used and created many forms of math that we still use today. Their advancements in both writing forms and mathematics help people today in more ways than they could have imagined. Also, numerous things were discovered when Jean François Champollion in 1822 translated hieroglyphs for the first time (Lesko 135 44). Lastly, we no longer write in picture symbols that few people can decipher and still use a base ten counting system. Math in Egypt and Today The Egyptians utilized many forms of math in their daily lives. Among these were various algebra and geometry problems(Gardner). Around 2700 BC, a base ten counting system that used different symbols such as a stroke for the number one, a heel bone symbol for 10, a coil of rope for 100, and a lotus plant for 1,000 was developed (Mastin). Base ten is a numbering system that uses a decimal for any number smaller than one. Once a number exceeds nine it moves to the next place (the tens place) (Russel). Furthermore, the Egyptians could also estimate the area of a circle by guessing that if the area of a circle with a diameter of nine units was close to the area of a square with sides of eight units, that the area of that circle could be calculated by multiplying the diameter by 8⁄9 and then squaring it (Mastin). • 5. Tompkins Conservation Deforestation, pollution, poaching, and soil abuse are just four of the innumerable factors that lead to deleterious effects on the environment. With more and more trees falling under the determined chainsaws and axe blows of illegal loggers and soil loss from tenuous irrigation methods, South American governments have a rising concern to protect its ecosystem. But an unusual, and equally controversial, solution came not within the restraining bounds of the country borders, but from the efforts of the American multi millionaire and philanthropic conservationist, Douglas Tompkins. Concerned about the ecology of South America, Tompkins purchased sumptuous strips of forest land to shield it from the venomous ways of poachers and illegal loggers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The best solution to this imminent conflict would be for Tompkins to expropriate a sizeable chunk of his land to national conservatories to ensure the public had sufficient access to public road, ancestral grounds, and water and mineral rights. However, he should also maintain a steadfast determination to keep most of his land as long as necessary to ensure it has recovered from past human interactions and see it delivered safely into the hands of Argentine conservatories. As a whole, his campaign to conserve the environment has been successful and beneficial both to him and the ecosystem. In culmination, Tompkins, as a conservational philanthropist, has inaugurated his conservational efforts to accumulate a sizeable portion of foreign nations. Due to lawmakers and local residents rising concern of his control of natural resources and his property blocking public transportation routes, he must devise a solution that will satisfy both conservational and public demands. Thus, the most effective and equitable solution would be to sequester most of his land to local conservation efforts, so as to ensure the government had adequate control over its natural resources and access to ancestral ... • 10. The Influence Of Napster s Contribution To The Culture Of... Throughout the course of history there have been many technological advances that have made a tremendous impact on human culture and the way our society functions. Inventions like the automobile, television, and the internet have all contributed to improve the quality of living as we know it. One major contribution to media and our culture was the development and rise of sound recording. Since it s inception sound recording has evolved and adapted to fit our ever growing need for media. Thanks to this reason it remains heavily integrated into our culture. As sound recording developed, it pushed music, one of the oldest forms of media into a constant cycle of rebirth. Not only did Napster take the concept of music sharing to a new level, it changed the way music was listened to and how the music industry would begin to market popular music. With the internet becoming a fully formed popular resource, Napster was a free online service that specialized in sharing MP3 files over the internet via P2P (Peer to peer) file sharing. P2P allowed users to gain access to music; which usually is paid content, by searching for a Host (the source of the content) that would upload and distribute this content for free. This meant that everyone across the world who had access to internet could find libraries of albums from various recording artists that they would generally have to pay hundreds of dollars to listen to. What made this so appealing to the masses was that they could access it all for free. This significantly impacted the music industry because it had no official way to control such a vast network. Why would consumer want to pay for music when they could find it for free? The music industry which essentially makes a profit from record sales believed that this online service would cost them millions. Rather than the music industry making sales from each record sold, one Napster user could purchase a record, upload it to the service and then hundreds of other users could download it for free. • 11. Gender Stereotyping Of Sports Media Gender stereotyping in sports media is something we see everyday in magazines and on TV. Since sports were invented, males have dominated one of Canada s largest pastimes. Reasons for this being physicality and strength, but as time progressed women began to become more involved in the culture of sport. Today there is almost an equal amount of women participating in sports as man, yet women are still not being represented with the same approach as men. About a month ago I found a video online that followed a sports reporter who was trying to make a point about gender stereotyping within sports media. He would interview professional male athletes but rather than ask them the typical interview questions we see in male sports, such as has your workout routine changed since... but rather asked them questions that are typically related to female athlete interviews such as one that was asked to swimmer Michael Phelps Shaving your body hair gives you an edge in the pool, but how about your love life , or any comments about reports about your girlish figure . At the end of the video they show real women athletes being asked these types of questions in real interviews. The men s reactions of embarrassment to disgust vs. the women s reactions of showing no surprise to being asked these derogatory questions, says it all. It is no surprise that the sexualization of female athletes is something all too common in sports media. We ll be looking into the idea of sexualisation in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this article, a psychologist cleared up this worry. The psychologist stated in the article that Kids who are good spellers [academically] are good spellers in instant messaging, and kids who are poor spellers in English class are poor spellers in instant messaging. The implied conclusion is that texting and writing in school do not relate negatively. This study is a positive correlation however, the coefficient is very low. Children have learned that their texting language and their language at school is completely separate. The are easily able to go back and forth from one to another once they have become accustomed to both of these languages. Students know that there is a difference between correctly writing a paper in school and correctly writing a text. According to the article and the implied conclusion, parents do not need to worry about their children s texting skills ruining their spelling habits. Additionally, when Juliet says she does not want to marry Paris Lady Capulet says that she can deal with her father. This is weak because Lady Capulet does not care to see if Juliet is happy she just wants what is best for her. Lady Montague is weak because she does not make an effort to talk to Romeo about anything he is doing at the time. After Romeo has slain Tybalt, Lady Montague does not talk to Romeo to comfort him or to ask him if he is ok. Also, at the end of the play, after Romeo kills himself, she does not think she has anything else to live for so she kills herself. This is weak because she could have tried to prevent this tragedy from happening. • 18. Erickson Reflection This week we learned about Erickson and his theory on development. Erikson studied under the Freud method, but unlike Freud, Erikson actually did research on infants and children as they were developing. I really enjoyed learning about Erikson considering I have a 5 month old at home growing away. It was interesting to compare these videos to where my baby was in development. Another interesting thing about this module was the James Marcia Identity Status which consists of 4 parts foreclosure, achievement, diffusion, and moratorium. Diffusion is when you have not really made a commitment to anything yet. This is typically a high school junior/senior or even college freshman/sophomore. They have not yet figured out what they want to do with life yet and honestly, aren t too worried about. In my diffusion score I received a 5 meaning I guess I am in the middle. I m not too sure if I agree with this accusation or not, but maybe that is why I scored this number. Although I had my career path figured out and I was on the path to it up until a few months ago I feel as though I have started testing the waters in other areas now. These areas are still very close to what my original plan was. Now that I have a family I am focused more now than ever to pick the perfect career for not just me, but my family. I feel as though I have always been well organized planned women, but throwing a baby, husband, and other life changing circumstances into the mix has lead me to this spot ... • 19. The Ethics Of Care, And Virtue Ethics I am currently a computer science major and plan on becoming a computer programmer. My love for technology including video games is unique along with my morals. Through the course we covered five moral philosophies which can fit into my life. There is not a perfect moral philosophy, which is why I will be taking bits and parts from the five different one to make one which fits my life style and morals. The five I will be dissecting are, Utilitarianism, Social Contract Theory, Kant, The Ethics of Care, and Virtue Ethics. Utilitarianism is a theory which I can agree with, mostly. I would like to do what makes the majority of people happy, however, it might not always be the correct decision. An example would be people at a workplace each decide to steal five dollars and not tell (no one gets caught), this would make everyone happy but is it really morally correct. It also depends on the outcome, if the consequences outweigh the happiness then the act is not ethical. There are also other factors which can come into play, one scenario about the train going down the tracks. You can save a bunch of people by switching the train to another track, but the person on the other track is someone you love. This one person means more to you than just one unit of happiness which does not follow the rule, everyone s happiness is the same. Utilitarianism brings a great way to make ethical decisions, but it cannot be used in every situation which is why it only needs to be applied when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Godfather , a crime noir film produced in 1972, is about an aged patriarch of a famous mafia dynasty that transfers control of his business to his disinclined son. It was directed by Francis Ford Cappola and stars actors such as Al Pacino and Marlon Brando. The film s numerous achievements, specifically in the opening sequence, stem from the exemplary utilization and integration of misé en scene, editing, and cinematographic elements. Mise en scene is a key element in the representation of a character. For example, the film begins with a slow jazz soundtrack, a characteristic of thriller films during the 1970 s. The sequence begins with a close up on Amerigo Bonasera as he stares in the camera while it zooms out, telling the audience about his daughter s rape. William Reynolds and Peter Zinner, the lead editors of the film, used this shot, that spans the next three minutes of the film, to add a sense of insecurity and rising tension. It also is used to reveal Bonasera is talking to a mysterious figure disguised by the shadows and that three other men are present, but without giving the setting of the scene or who these men are. Then, they break the three minute shot by giving the audience their first glance at the mysterious figure in the shadows. They cut to a medium shot of Don Corleone, the leader of this organized crime dynasty, finally revealing this shadowy figure to the audience, relieving them of some tension. The camera shifts location again in order to reveal the scene, something like an establishing shot. Here, they reveal four male characters, all dressed in suits, and the only lights coming from the slats in the blinds and the sole artificial light on the right side of the room. Specifically, in Singapore, English language attained supremacy due to colonialism, which promulgated English to be dominant as it was used to design legislatures in the island during the British occupation. In today s society, English is preached for its economical benefits as it allows access to the global world, giving way for English language to maintain dominance in Singapore. However, these practice of hegemony results in the disruption of ethnic identity. For the purpose of this essay, I would be focusing on how the English language is dominant in Singapore due to its economical benefits and thus the resultant effect of ethnic identity being non represented and disregarded. Economy is the driving factor of Singapore s policies, which is why I am taking an economical perspective on the reason for English language s prominence. Dominant language sets the pace of the country and its growth due to its influences. It paves the identity of the country as language is a unifying factor that brings people together under a common identity, especially in a heterogeneous country like Singapore. Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory Karl Marx s Class Conflict Theory Introduction Karl Marx believed that struggle or conflict among classes was an inevitable feature of capitalism based on the argument that various groups in a society or social classes perpetually fight and compete for resources and power, hence the groups remains polarized against each other. The Karl Marx s conflict theory views behavior from the perspective of conflict or tension among two or more groups. The conflict does not necessarily translate to violence but rather takes the form of struggle within political negotiations, business, philosophical ideologies or personal attitudes. A critical analysis of Karl Marx conflict theory s point of view reveals that the conflict of social classes is the major aspect of societal conflict, and is mostly propagated by the differences in economic statuses and inequalities in distribution. Human societies have been class based in some way and the class factor has been the most basic dividing or differentiating factor between broad social groups. In the economic sphere that Marx s theory focuses on, there is a class that own and control means of economic production which could be referred to as the upper class, and there is the class that maybe own nothing, but their ability to sell their labor power in return for wages which could be referred to as the middle or low class. • 43. My Design Of Sighting A Gun I. The purpose for my design is to speed up the process of sighting a gun in, the scope to take into compensate the parabolic launch of a bullet, and to hit to target bulls eye. Sighting in a gun requires a long trial and error process that any hunter, marine, or police sniper would agree upon. As a bullet is fired from a rifle it rises a few inches for about one hundred yards or more where it descends below the axis of the barrel. The scope looks like any other scope but will account for the parabolic launch and relocate its self to the correct position for the most accurate shot. Nikon is a company that produces quality scopes and would be a good contestant for the idea. They support their products being brighter, clearer, precise, and rugged, but these are just a few of the attributes knowledgeable hunters commonly use to describe Nikon riflescopes. Nikon is determined to bring hunters, shooters, and sportsmen a wide selection of the best hunting optics money can buy while at the same time pushing the envelope to create revolutionary capabilities for the serious hunter (Nikon). The design would also need an electrical engineer to design the wiring and microchips/sensors, but a mechanical engineer from Power Electrics would also be needed to fit the motor for the positioning of the scope. I would like to arrange a meeting for all of us to discuss and perfect the idea. II. The scope, Buck Slayer by Slade Mills and Nikon, will be about the same size as any other ... The movie also teaches that in this life things can be accomplished no matter what the obstacles are for example your race. So let s take a look at the three cultural conflicts In Glory Road, the first being colored people versus white people, second is a poor school versus rich school, and lastly players versus coach. So the first cultural conflict in Glory road is colored people versus white people and it s the most important issue in the movie. In the movie blacks are treated prolly just because of their skin color. A really sad scene from the movies was when Texas Western went to eat at a dinner and when Ched went to use the restroom he was jumped by three white men.
