The Influence Of Television In The 1950 s
World War II ended on September 2, 1945, and citizens in America were dwelling in the postwar
booming economy. Thus, people had a hole burning in their pocket and many entrepreneurs found a
means in which they could supply their products to consumers. Therefore, television became a method
of communication, rather than the radio, the television allowed individuals to watch events in the
comfort in their living room. In the 1950 s a television could be found in almost every American s
home becoming known as the dawn of the television age. A famous sitcom in the 1950 s which first
aired on October 5, 1951 is I Love Lucy. This particular show is the building blocks of the beginning
of television, exposing viewers of the society in the 1950 s, along with the minimal similarities and
mass differences when compared to today s shows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I Love Lucy stared Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, who plays Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo and Vivian Vance and
William Frawley who played Mr. and Mrs. Fertz their best friends and landlords. The show took place
in an apartment building in New York City, and Lucy who is a naive and stubborn redhead always got
herself and her husband into trouble. In the specific show I watched from season one out of six
episode twenty one titles New Neighbors. Lucy is curious about the neighbors who just moved in and
she ends up snooping in their apartment and overhear them planning to blow up the capital and
plotting her murder, but Lucy was unaware they were rehearsing a play. Thus, Lucy ends up getting
Ricky, Fred, and Ethel involved, and they all end up in jail until the policeman reveals the neighbors
are just actors. This one show conveys a commutative and family environment, with conservative
information, unlike the shows of today. The society at in the 1950 s promoted high moral and family
values through harmless comical

I would tell her that not every woman bleeds during their first time having sex. The bleeding is
dependent on the person. A woman s hymen could have been torn in some other way before her first
time having sex. Additionally, vigorous play and tampon use can also lead to earlier bleeding and
explain why a woman s hymen is already torn. All women are different, thus pain and bleeding
occurring during every woman s first time having sex is different too.
2. Briefly explain at least two ways that cultural influences may contribute to the development of
sexual dysfunctions among women. (1 point)
In our culture, we tend to give more masculine names to a man s penis and dirty sounding names to a
woman s vagina. This contributes to women feeling uncomfortable and degraded. The male genitalia
names mostly reference power, while names for women genitalia mostly have negative connotations.
In Chinese culture, the vulva is referred to as something beautiful, such as a flower. Another influence
to the development of sexual dysfunction among women is pornography. Some women tend to imitate
what sexual workers in pornography do because it is a very large part of our culture. However, this
leads to sexual displeasure for women and their partners. Imitating sexual pleasure leads to sexual
disfunction.

Define the term token resistance. Explain why token resistance may have negative consequences. (2
points)
Token resistance is when someone says no to sexual advances, but they actually really want to engage
in sex. Saying no in this scenario can lead to negative consequences because it prevents honest
communication and gives into gender stereotypes. This can also give men the idea that it is okay to
disregard women s refusals when it comes to sex. This can lead to men becoming more aggressive it

3.1 Introduction to Autonomous Cars Autonomous cars, also known as driverless cars, or self driving
cars are vehicles that can drive themselves without a human driver to control the steering,
acceleration, and braking (Thrun, 2010). They are designed to sense their surroundings with
techniques of artificial intelligence, sensors with a 360° of view, radar, and global positioning systems,
so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in self driving
mode. Advanced control systems analyze the sensory information gathered to plan the best route to the
desired destination. Obstacles and road signs are all part of the algorithm to be taken into account
ahead of time. In addition, the autonomous vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Level 2 Combined Function This level involves automation of at least two primary control functions
designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions. An example is adaptive
cruise control in combination with lane centering. Level 3 Limited Self Driving Vehicles at this level
of automation are able to operate autonomously for some portions of the journey. Transfer of control
back to the human driver happens with some warning. The Google car is an example of limited self
driving automation. Level 4 Full Self Driving The vehicle is designed to perform all safety critical
driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip without manual control at any time
during the trip. 3.2 Advantages And Limits There are many potential advantages to using a driverless
car instead of a traditional human controlled vehicle: Reduction in car accidents. Most car accidents
are caused by driver errors, but the autonomous system can monitor a broader range of sensors and
react faster than a human driver. More efficient transportation due to higher speed limit Increase in
road capacity and reduction in traffic congestion due to narrowed safety gap and intelligent parking
technology. Occupants in an autonomous car will not be constrained due to age, license, disabilities,
intoxication and other factors. Although we can benefit from the self driving cars, potential

Walker Ono Face The Gaze
A Look at Differing Approaches to Feminism Through Contemporary Art
In the fifty years between the JFK assassination and a Kardashian selfie breaking the internet, two
women representing different cultures, races, times, and attitudes created two individual pieces of art
that became living commentary on the power dynamics at play in their world. In 1964, Yoko Ono
challenged both societal convention and the artist/audience relationship in her exhibit Cut Piece, and
decades later Kara Walker s Sugar Subtlety, 2014, challenged preconceived notions of racial
symbolism and societal convention on a historical level. For both creators, the idea of The Gaze is
explored and even featured, a term that addresses the controlling power a dominant group holds
through visualization and often through sexuality. However, the ways in which this term is explored
are different between the two women. While Ono s work highlights and even proves the Western male
domination involved in the idea of The Gaze , fifty years later and a difference in culture sees Kara
Walker s work create an artistic and intellectual revolution against the very power the Gaze tries to
maintain, turning the concept on its head. As the surge of Second Wave Feminism swept across the
Western world of the 1960s, Japanese artist and activist Yoko Ono created a work of performance art,
entitled Cut Piece,

The Attitudes Of Aronnax And Captain Nemo
There are two characters in this story that have major attitudes, this is Aronnax and Captain Nemo.
They way they look at the world is very clear through out the chapters. Captain Nemo takes matters
into his own hands and is placed to explore the nature and conquer his own accomplishes. Nemo looks
at the world as if he can own it. Aronnax, on the other hand sees the world as amazing, a great master
piece.
I believe that Captain Nemo s outlook on the world and mankind is based off of hatred. I say this
because he believes that the world must be his even though he did not create it, he wants to destroy it
if he can not make it his own. Nemo is showed to be a private character, this makes it more hard for

Pros and Cons of Attending College Essay examples
Is College Worth It? In Life today a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather it
is a necessity. We are raised to believe that a person needs higher education in order to succeed in life.
There is a saying, if you think education is expensive, try ignorance. You may ask is college
necessary? There are people out in the real world that have never set a foot on a college campus before
and they are doing better than others that have their master s degree. There are many views from both
sides that have a good argument. The main reason people go to college is because they were always
told you will have a better life if you go to college. Kids are pressured to feel that the have to go to
college because, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They do not want to be looked down upon in the eyes of society so they do what they think is best.
The idea to become a productive person in society is that you must have some sort of college
education. Being a college student is seen as more respectable, rather then being a garbage man or
janitor because of the way society looks down upon these types of careers. Going to college and
receiving a degree does not guarantee that a person is going to get a job right after they graduate. It is
sometimes hard for some graduates to find a good job because there is so much competition with other
graduates as well. Sometimes they may get a job and it could be in a totally different field of what
they got their degree for. They must find a job though to pay off all the debt that an education has
given them. Many students feel that some classes are a waste of time and money because they learn
nothing about their chosen field. They have to take classes that have nothing to do with their major but
must take the class to meet the core education requirement of the college. If these students receive a
less than average grade in a class they feel is unneeded then that lowers their overall GPA. The major
reason of going to college is to get a good job. College prepares us with academic knowledge in order
to succeed in the future. Many people think that a higher education is essential to prepare a person for
their future. As

Solar Cell Processing And Fabrication
Abstract Solar cells have long been regarded as the most promising choice for the development of cost
effective and reliable energy. This paper reviews recent progress and challenges in the development of
solar cell processing and fabrication. The comparison of various solar technologies and future scope
for this are briefly reviewed. Next, the issues and challenges in light trapping and the nature of
textured interface, quality of the active layer material and antireflection coatings are detailed.
Index Terms Fabrication, Solar cell technology, Crystalline silicon
I. INTRODUCTION
As the world is suffering from an ever diminishing stock of fossil fuels and serious pollution being
caused by fuels, solar energy has become the most promising solution to the global energy crisis.
Among various methods for generating energy from the sun, solar cells are an effective approach for
converting solar energy into electrical energy for regular use. There is a wide range of research
activities around the world that has demonstrated the efficiency potential of crystalline silicon cells.
Most of the research studies has inferred, both theoretically and practically, that thin crystalline silicon
cells can have low manufacturing costs while not compromising on reasonable efficiencies. Many
researchers have attempted to study the impact of wafer thickness on the performance of crystalline
silicon cells, and the best efficiencies on wafers with thickness under 200µm are typically in the range

While many people in England believe that the Scottish are beneficial to their union. The Scottish
people believe that their way of life and culture is at risk of becoming an English one, and for the
reason, many Scots want independence. This is a good thing because it will be the first time in a very
long time that the Scottish people will have a voice of their own, and choose their own fate as a
nation.
First off, we will start with how and why Scotland joined with the English to form the United
Kingdom, and the Darien Venture and why it put Scotland in near collapse and total economic
devastation. Second, we will discuss why both sides agreed to the Acts of Union 1706 1707. Third, we

then named the new Scottish colony New Caledonia and immediately discovered some very large
problems with their plan: First off, on the western side of Panama, the mountains were a lot larger than
expected, making overland trade completely impossible. Even if they built a canal, the technology to
do so was still hundreds of years away. Second, the Scottish goods made of wool brought to trade with
the locals was absolutely useless in the perpetual heat and humidity of South America. Third, the
Spanish had already planted their flags on the beaches of Panama and many other parts of South
America, and they were not that grateful to see the Scots arrive. And finally, without necessary
supplies, diseases such as Dysentery spread quite quickly. Two full years persisted and with the cost of
two thousand dead Scotsmen, they eventually abandoned their project. However, this was not the first

Similarities And Differences Between Small Town And Small...
In every country, the land is divided into sections of towns and cities. These towns and cities are
homes to people who have looked upon their preferences to decide where to locate their homes.
Individuals take into account the advantages and disadvantages of both locations as well as the
opportunities presented. Hence, there are several similarities and differences between big cities and
small towns.
To begin, a significant difference between big cities and small towns is the cost of living. The cost of
living in a big city is much higher than that of a small town due to the increase of population and
demand. In the city, landlords tend to increase rate prices of living spaces depending on the demand
for the space and the number of applicants. Also, the price of food and clothing from stores is much
more costly because it is located in a busy city. The owners of these businesses do this because of the
high demand, but limited supply of both space and items. However, towns have a lower population
level than cities and the cost of living spaces or items is not as expensive as the latter. The cost of
living in towns is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Summary In Roald Dahl s The Landlady
Have you ever gotten a weird vibe from someone? Or met a person who isn t quite right in the head?
Billy Weaver was just looking for a place to stay and didn t feel like walking the extra mile to go to a
hotel. Instead he landed at the Bed and Breakfast. He was greeted at the door by a seemingly nice lady
at the door. Once he walked through the door there were a few indicators that showed this house wasn
t quite right. Additionally there were factors that told the reader that the LandLady had a few
problems. I wonder what would have happened if Billy was more aware and observant. What would
ve happened to Billy if he had walked the extra mile to the Blue Bell and Dragon. Would he have been
alive? The author of The LandLady expresses the theme of be aware because actions have
consequences by using descriptions, foreshadowing and dialogue. Roald Dahl , the author of, The
LandLady uses descriptions to develop the theme, be aware because actions have consequences. When
Billy walked into the Bed and Breakfast there was nowhere for him to hang his coat and hat. This is
significant because it shows barely anyone ever comes to this hotel. Also, it is suspicious that there is
no where to hang your belongings when you are at a hotel. It is important to notice that when the
LandLady gives Billy his tea that it tastes and smells a bit off. Now and again , he caught a whiff of a
peculiar smell that seemed to be emancipated... he wasn t quite sure what it reminded him

Teenagers And The Struggle For Identity Analysis
Everyone is unique in their own way. People and the environment can change who they to find out
who they are. Identity describes one s various aspects of themselves. It takes the time to find out who
they are. People and the environment can affect one s identity with struggles to overcome.
Determination defines one s identity by setting a pathway to follow because it shows how one s
dreams are achievable.
From the times that identity is unclear, determination defines one s decision because it can show one s
integrity to pursue their dream. In the book, Modern Mythologies by Surya Kundu, she tells a story

In the article, Teenagers and the Struggle For Identity by Seth Mullins, he describes the possible
changes in a teen s identity. During the teen years, teens need to figure out who they want to be before
going to college. When teens compare with someone else, Mullins states that kids can feel a strong
urge to check their own progress alongside that of another or to gravitate to people who, for all
outward appearances, seem to have it all figured out (Mullins, Teenagers and the Struggle For Identity
). People can encourage someone to change their identity. One person could dream to be their idol and
they assume that their personality suits them. With people s encouragement, their dream before may
change, but they are alike like somebody else. Even though people can encourage others to achieve
one s dream, determination is the guide that sets the dream. In the song, Hall of Fame by The Script

An Effective System For Lossless Image Compression
Abstract In this paper, we proposed an effective system for lossless image compression using different
wavelet transform such as the stationary wavelet transform, the non decimated wavelet transform, and
discrete wavelet transform with delta encoding and compare the results without delta encoding. With
the development in the field of networking in the process of sending and receiving files needed to
effective techniques for image compression as the raw images required large amounts of disk space to
defect during transportation and storage operations. We used lossless compression to maintain the
original features of the image in this process; there is a major problem which often is low compression
ratios. We also use three types of wavelet transform which are discrete wavelet transform, non
decimated wavelet transform, and stationary wavelet transform to demonstrate the effectiveness of the
proposed system for comparison and to show the differences between each type to overcome previous
challenges. This paper proposed a system for lossless image compression based on the use of the three
types of wavelet transforms using Arithmetic coding and Huffman coding with delta coding, which
helps in the high compression ratio to clarify the extent of the difference and distinction between each
type. The results show that the stationary wavelet transform outperforms the non decimated wavelet
transform and the discrete wavelet transform and with delta encoding outperforms without delta

How Transnational Corporations Affect the Sovereignty of a Nation
Analysts agree that TNCs have altered the international relations principles that were once dominated
by nation state relations (Kline, 2005).Transnational Corporations have in many ways exploited the
weaknesses in the territorially guarded national laws. In many developing countries, organizations
affiliated to external control have challenged and in some instances threatened government
sovereignty. Economically stable countries such as the United States of America, have attempted to
extend their influence to other countries of the world through TNC. This situation is what led to
governments endorsing the non interference policy in national political affairs (United Nations, 2003).
Interesting to note is the role that non governmental organizations played in this debate.
Nongovernmental organizations have been known to not only exert political pressure on governments
with little democratic space, but also collaborate with TNCs in this quest. (Heinrich, 2001). For
example, many NGOs sort the active involvement of TNC in removal of the apartheid regime in South
Africa. This in return, has created tension between these governments and the NGOs with the NGOs
calling for the increased political involvement of the TNCs.
Transnational Corporations have been steadfast in calling for respect, support and promotion of human
rights (Kline, 2005). This has been done in reference to the United Nations Universal

Richard Attenborough Research Paper
The religious beliefs if film icon and Gandhi director Sir Richard Attenborough
Legendary British film actor Sir Richard Attenborough passed away on August 24 at the age of 90.
The performer, producer, and director starred in dozens of films, and is most well known for his roles
in Jurassic Park, The Great Escape, Flight of the Phoenix, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Bridge too
Far. Attenborough also produced and directed many movies himself, his most acclaimed work being
the 1982 biopic Gandhi for which he personally won two Academy Awards.
The critically acclaimed Gandhi was Attenborough s passion project. The film featured British actor
Ben Kingsley now famous, but little known at the time in the titular role, and Attenborough both
produced and directed the biography. Although he won two Academy Awards, the film itself won
eight. Criticized by historians for contributing to myth making, the film was nonetheless a critical and
financial success, earning 20 times its $22 million budget. The project finally got off of the ground
after 20 years of Attenborough attempting to secure funding. By selling off his possessions and
spending so much money I couldn t pay the gas bill, he was eventually able to produce the biopic

The Theoretical Relevance Of Marx s Theory Of Alienation
The theoretical relevance of Marx s theory of alienation has been the subject of much contention since
the posthumous publication of his Economic and Philosophical manuscripts in (). While the notion of
alienation, along with its distinctly Hegelian underpinnings, has frequently been dismissed as a
youthful error in comparison with Marx s supposedly more mature work, I argue that it is fundamental
to his critique of capitalism. As Sayers (p.xi) notes, After his early period, Marx did not often use the
term it and much other Hegelian language is for the most part abandoned. Nevertheless, the concept of
alienation is implicit throughout Marx s work, and it continues to provide a major basis for his
understanding of capitalism and for his critique of the impact of the market . It is important to relate
Marx s philosophical project back to the always implicit notion of alienation as a set of relations
between people and as a mode of being in the material world specific to capital(ism), otherwise there
is a risk of overlooking the human relationships that underpin the capitalist mode of production. As
Ollman () points out, By dismissing the essential human relations, the basic relations of alienation
which underly capitalist production, its surface relations become everything (p.202). So, in dismissing
the human relationships that maintain a given mode of production, it is reified thus, any critique that
does not take this into consideration fails to address the matter

Sons Of Liberty Analysis
Benjamin Franklin once said We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. The
quote represents how the Sons of Liberty were all in, and there was no backing down to the British.
They fought together and they were going to die together as long as they fought for what s right. The
Sons of Liberty attempted peaceful solutions to the taxations from the king, fought for what they
believed in, and were just acting out against the king in self defense which shows the Sons of Liberty
are patriotic leaders, not terrorists.
First, the Sons of Liberty attempted peaceful solutions. On page 99 in the text United States History
Beginning to 1914 the text states, A popular method of protest was the boy cott, in which people
refused to buy British goods. The first colonial boycott started in New York in 1765. This quote shows
that the colonists resorted to a peaceful protest to express their concern for the new taxations. This
matter because originally the colonists did not want to fight they just wanted to be represented. Which
shows they are patriots because they are sticking up for themselves and their rights. The colonists did
not only try peaceful solutions once. They attempted multiple times. An example of this is on page 114
in our textbooks. The text United States History Beginning to 1914 also states On July 5 the delegates
signed the Olive Branch Petition as a final attempt to restore harmony. King George refused to read it.

Battle Of Horseshoe Bend Strengths And Weaknesses
The Battle of Horseshoe Bend illustrated some important lessons that are as applicable to today s
military operational environments as they were back then These lessons are timeless. Studying this
battle can help leaders and Commanders identify strengths and weakness that lead to mission success
and enemy defeat. General Andrew Jackson had engaged the enemy Creek Indians in previous battles.
He was able to learn valuable lessons and make adjustments to ensure that the Battle of Horseshoe
Bend achieved his operational objectives and had the desired end state for mission success.
Armies cannot sustain or conduct combat operations without effective logistical supply lines. Lack of
supplies lead to poor morale and capitulation of forces. Jackson led several campaigns against the
Creek Indians prior to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend but could not accomplish his operational
objectives due to a lack of supplies and long supply lines. In the winter of 1814, Jackson suffered
great losses when he led an Army of inexperienced, undisciplined and under supplied forces to fight
the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to
retreat to Fort Strother.
After winter, in March of 1814, Jackson left Fort Strother with the intent to extend supply lines by
building a new fort which came to be known as Fort Williams. This fort was closer to Horseshoe bend

Survivor s Guilt In The Vietnam War By Boo Kien
Survivor s guilt has played a substantial role throughout the story. Boa Ninh helps the reader to
become aware and understand war as being all conquering by comparing it to love. Kien faced many
hardships after war, being one out of ten to survive the Vietnam War, he realized that he should expose
the reality by writing his own biography. He struggles with both the memories of the war and also his
trauma post war. He says that he is required to write about the war as he is the only survivor of the
battalion. He writes to get rid of his tormenting memories going on his head. He is not only
traumatized because of war, but he also was traumatized because of the rape of his long lost love

Essay about Technology in Law Enforcement
Technology used in policing enhances law enforcement organizations ability to function because it has
improved police databases, reports, tracking, and forensics (DOJ, 2004). In addition, a less lethal
weapon is designed to disable, capture, or immobilize a suspect without killing them. However,
occasionally deaths do happen as a result of less lethal weapons which include kinetic energy,
electrical, acoustic, and chemical weapons. Furthermore, violence, disease, and infected evidence are
dangers that law enforcement officers face today.

Specialized cameras now allow crime techs to capture entire crime scenes on video for later reference.
Therefore, GPS devices and forensic science have also been improved by technology and have

Kinetic energy and electric weapons are less lethal weapons that are used by law enforcement officers
today. Kinetic energy is used by specially developed firearm rounds that are designed to incapacitate a
suspect non lethally. The specially developed firearm rounds include rubber, wax, plastic, and beanbag
tipped projectiles. For example, if law enforcement officers encounter a heavy set suspect with a knife
that is unwilling to comply, they can fire at the suspect with a beanbag shotgun to knock the wind of
the suspect in an effort to detain him/her. Electric weapons include stun guns and stun batons which
use electricity to immobilize their targets (Grant, 2008). For instance, if a suspect that poses a threat is
not following orders given to them by law enforcement officers then the stung gun can be used which
ultimately stiffens their muscles rendering them unable to move. Therefore, kinetic energy and electric
weapons are less lethal weapons that are used by law enforcement officers today.
Chemical weapons are also less lethal weapons that are used by law enforcement

Assignment On Benihana Simulation
NAME: UTSHAV BUDHATHOKI

LECTURER: DANIEL SKERL
SESSION: TRIMESTER 3
BENIHANA SIMULATION REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
OVERVIEW:
BENIHANA INC, an American restaurant company was founded in 1964 in New York City and has
116 Japanese cuisine restaurants. Benihana simulation is a computer simulation of an operation
management result based on concept of Benihana restaurant in Tokyo designed by Harvard school.
The outline of the simulation is based on two seating position i.e. bar and the dining area. The target of
this restaurant based simulation is to boost utilization, nightly profit and throughput time by using
batching strategy, size of bar and cycle time and different advertising scheme. Simulation consist of 6
challenges where only 1 to 3 factor can be changed in challenges 1 to 5 whereas challenge 6 is a
combination of strategies to gain the maximum output i.e. nightly profit by using all possible factors
from 5 previous challenges.
I started simulation by testing all the possible outcomes from challenge 1 to 5 and used the best
scenario from one simulation to the other step by step and drew the conclusion at the very end.
CHALLENGE 1:
The first challenge was to determine whether or not batching dining room customer was beneficial.
Batching means that the parties must reach a number of eight before they are seated. Two scenarios
from the simulation show that batching is a better strategy that helped to increase profit. Utilization of
the restaurant capacity is largest while batching. We could place 8 people at single table rather than
placing group of 5 at one and 3 at another. The number of customers that can be served at one time
highly influences the profit. According to the simulation it is more beneficial to use batching as
average profit is $83.64 compared to average profit of $282.29 when not batched. By using batching
benihana restaurants are able to eliminate bottleneck that occurs in the waiting area/bar. By doing so
they are able to see more customers in their restaurants which can be seen in the graphs to the right.
They lose fewer customers and more diners are served. Bottleneck primarily refers to the resources

Essay On New Haven
The city of New Haven, Connecticut has been a long standing settlement. Established officially by
Europeans in March of 1638 (Source 3), New Haven has a detailed history of population declines and
growth. The territory that is now New Haven was once inhabited by the Native American group the
Quinnipiack (Source 6). The accrual of land was easy for the English settlers in this territory due to
the conflicts between the Native American groups. The Quinnipiack tribe occupied the area near the
harbor and the Mohawks and Pequots occupied the surrounding area and constantly harassed the
Quinnipiack. When the English arrived the Quinnipiack traded their land for protection, which the
English agreed to immediately. Through the years the settlement of New Haven has grown and
declined in population due to different factors including political, economic and many more. The
English settlers first selected the territory that is now New Haven due to its location and availability of
resources. New Haven can be described by using the five themes of geography, which are location,

Although this vision of New Haven being a major trade harbor was diminished when larger cities such

through the harbor and after the settlement was well established many immigrants from Europe
immigrated through the harbor as well. Today the harbor is still used for some trade as well as
recreation. Lastly, the regional definition in regards to New Haven s geography can be defined as the

The Importance Of Selfless Service
When one sees the word selfless service, he or she literally sees the words self and less, followed by
service. Self refers to an individual (in this case, it refers to one s own interests) and less indicates a
lack of, or without. Service can be a synonym of the word volunteering or duty. Therefore, the term
selfless service must literally mean the lack of the pursuit of one s own interests for the betterment of
others. There is no measurement of selfless service. No matter what the scenario or who is involved,
everyone who is involved benefits from one s selfless acts. The one who shows selflessness may
benefit by receiving a thank you, or even just a good feeling of helping others. Of course, the ones
who receive the selfless acts benefit from obvious reasons. Selfless service can be shown by anyone
and everyone, including a soldier putting his/her life on the line to save a fallen comrade, a husband
and father protecting and spending time with his wife and children, someone donating his/her time by
volunteering as a tutor or with the American Red Cross or some other goodwill charity, and the
teamwork of two or more athletes. Those four examples provide different scales in which selfless
service can be displayed. Selfless service can be displayed in regards to one s nation/military, one s
family, one s community, and any team sport.
The U.S. Army s definition of selfless service is to put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your
subordinates before your own

College Tuition Cost Essay
A simultaneous groan can be heard across the country by every college student as a new semester

don t have enough money to pay for it. In 1980, when taking into consideration the cost of both
private and public universities, the average four year college tuition cost was $23,000 (Melchor).
Recently, the average four year cost can be $70,000, and the average debt per student is $27,000

Steven Pearlstein, a researcher and writer on the Washington Post, firmly believes that this would
reduce the need to hire lecturers and adjunct (Pearlstein). Even so, Noah Smith, another researcher,
points out that, if research was in fact not needed, then less professors would be needed, and far more
lecturers should be hired. Smith also mentions that there is a reason we have researchers do research.
He says, In science and engineering, university professors are one of the main forces behind the U.S. s
innovative edge. They produce important basic research and pioneering technologies, and attract top
talent from all over the world. If you replace research professors with lecturers in science and
engineering or force professors to forgo research for teaching, which is the same thing you remove a
long term driver of America s competitive advantage and productivity growth. So Pearlstein s pitch to
helping college spending decrease may not be as beneficial as one would hope, because research
conducted at universities under college professors has greatly impacted the country s

Rigoberta Menchu Literary Analysis
The Guatemalan Civil War was a period filled with constant battles between the national government
and the indigenous Maya population. In I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala, we
witness Menchu s compelling narrative highlighting indigenous life during the Guatemalan Civil War.
Since publication, her narrative has achieved world acclaim as it was awarded the Nobel Peace in
1992. Such acclaim, however, has incited critics to question her narrative, as does anthropologist
David Stoll in Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans. Although the questioning of
historical accounts is valid, David Stoll s challenge of Menchu serves no purpose other than to
discredit Menchu s personal narrative. Therefore, I find Menchu ... Show more content on

She recollects earning only a meager 20 centavos for picking 35 pounds of coffee a day. However,
Stoll claims that Rigoberta never experienced working on the plantations as her father was not poor by
local standards . Yet, regardless of her level of poverty, Menchu was still impecunious as she was
living at the edge of the Altiplano mountains cultivating crops for the entirety of her day to simply
provide for her family. Stoll continues to say that Menchu provides an inaccurate representation of her
village as it was a more fluid society than conveyed . He states that the indígenas were learning better
ways to make a living and were not working in plantations as much, instead, they were going to
school in record numbers . Therefore, Stoll attempts to discredit the persona of Menchu as a humble
indigenous woman who overcame a multitude of obstacles in order to tarnish her entire narrative as a
false account in his desperate search for public recognition. Lastly, to disrepute Menchu, Stoll
attempts to disgrace the peasant movement she and her family were heavily involved with. He
denounces the protesters from Comité de Unidad Campesina (CUC), by criticizing their decision of
carrying Molotov cocktails in their occupation of the Spanish embassy. Stoll asserts that it should not

Students Should Be A Preset Learning Position Essay
First, students should be in a preset learning position in which they have greater attention and
openness to the explanations and instructions. After presenting the learning objective, the material
available and expected products, the student participation is requested to do a review about concepts
and procedures, in order to review the steps to solve equations with binomials and polynomials. At
this point, it is important to consider the appropriate momentum (Saphier and Gower, 1997) to keep
lesson in motion by overlapping to maximize time taking attendance while the review is done, and
provisioning to get all the necessary materials to avoid breaks in the process. Students are organized
into working groups (a maximum of four participants) for the purpose of activating cooperation, as
well as the dialogue and discussion about solving equations. Once students are ready to start its work,
the teacher presents a summary of the most important aspects to consider during the process of solving
the equations, circling around the working groups, answering questions and reviewing the progress of
the students. This could be more effective if the instruction is subdivided (Saphier and Gower, 1997)
by socializing and requesting some answers for example, and also by asking how they got to step two
or three before reaching the solution, so that the lesson is flexible and accessible for all students
according to their level of ownership since (Darch Crichlow, 2003) teachers can

Impact of Institutional Factors and Election Mechanisms...
In the 2012 United States Presidential election 58.2 percent of the registered voters turnout out to vote
(IDEA). This figure is in stark contrast to many other wealthy democracies in the western world for
the same election cycle (IDEA). This begs the question, why is voter turnout significantly lower in the
US compared to the rest of the first world and other OECD countries? There are countless factors that
could affect voter turnout, the most standard of which are based on socioeconomic status. But when
considering only developed nations, more is at play in predicting turnout. Focus is turned to
institutional factors and the effect election mechanisms, such as registration laws and party systems,
have on political participation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These institutional factors increase the resources necessary for a member of the public to vote, thus
discouraging political participation. Much of the proceeding argument hinges off of the Resource
Model of Participation, which states that an individual votes, or more generally participates in politics,
base on their personal stock of time, money, and civic skills (Verba, Schlozman, and Brady). It cost
personal resources to vote, and thus inherently an individual can only do so if they posses those
resources ahead of time. Additional credibility is gained from the Rational Choice Model of
Participation, which assumes that an individual votes based on logic, and will only cast a vote if
receiving a net benefit from doing so (Blais). In this way, even someone possessing the resources to
vote may be turned away because the burden of institutional factors decreases the net benefit of
voting. In the 2012 presidential election in the United States, as stated before, 58.2 percent of
registered voters turned out to vote. During the same election period, 80.35 percent turnout out for the
presidential elections in France, 71.55 percent in Germany, and 75.19 percent in Italy (IDEA). Only
the highest election in each respective country is considered. While these percentages may seem
similar, when talking about a nation on tens if not hundreds of millions of people, five percentage

Who Is Justinian Recreate The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire, or the eastern Roman Empire, was formed in the year 330 after Roman
Emperor Constantine I moved the seat of the Roman government to the city of Constantinople. It was
designated a second Rome, and had the advantage of being located on an Asian Eurpoean trade route
and on the Bosporus Strait, which made it incredibly hard to sack or besiege, since water surrounded
half of the city. Constantinople was also free from any corruption and political assassination, which
made governing easier to do and to manage as well. When the western Roman Empire collapsed in the
year 476, the eastern half remained intact, and it remained relatively stable until Emperor Justinian
came to power. Emperor Justinian was Emperor of the Byzantine Empire in the mid sixth century,
from 527 to 565, and headed his empire s notable renovatio imperii, or restoration of the Empire
during that time. Justinian devoted his reign to reclaim the lost western half of the Roman Empire, and
recreate it through military conquest and social reform. The military conquest was to expand the
Byzantine Empire so it reached the farthest extent of the Roman Empire, which was around the early
second century, while the social reform was to recreate the Roman law that once applied during the
height of the Roman Empire. So, these questions must be posed: How did Emperor Justinian attempt
to reform and recreate the Roman Empire, and what did he do to restore it? Were his legislative and
social reforms

success to me. Why is unhealthy? because I can t sleep well and I can t eat because stress. For
example, I read 30 pages or more I get stress. And then, I got bad score in test. Also, that s make a lot
of students to get low grades. Second, I don t have time to do my homework. I think almost half

Faust Greed Essay
Goethe uses the characters in Faust to show the destruction that insatiable greed causes. The characters
of Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles are each overcome by their own greed and inability to find
satisfaction in life. Goethe s warning of the inevitable downfall greed causes is still relevant the selfish
society of today.
Goethe ensures the audience members bear witness to multiple forms of greed within the title
character. Faust sees no value in his impressive accomplishments, because they have not afforded him
substantial wealth or property. Driven by this greed, he signs Mephistopheles deal and begins his
descent into immorality. When Faust spots Gretchen, he is already under Mephistopheles influence

Goethe uses Mephistopheles to voice his disapproval of those that would spend their energy
destroying others to satisfy their own desires. Mephistopheles creates chaos in the lives of others,
including Faust, Gretchen, and the emperor, simply to entertain himself. This desire to destroy others,
for his own personal gain is what leads him to make the wager with God. However, in the end,
Mephistopheles falls victim to his own greed. Overcome by his own lust for the angels that arrive to
save Faust, he loses the man s soul and consequently, the wager. Goethe s message is clear, one should
never exploit others for personal gain and still bares weight today. One can imagine Goethe would
have some choice words for Bernie Madoff. The talented Wall Street tycoon spent his efforts
swindling friends and clients out of billions of dollars. Madoff was of course caught and will spend
the rest of his life in jail. One can only imagine what Madoff could create if used his talents for good,
rather than to advance his own despicable greed.
Goethe s ability to understand the driving forces within the human psyche is one reason Faust still
survives today. Greed, as depicted by the characters of Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles, is still
prevalent in society today. It is interesting to consider what great work Goethe could create based on
the world today. Although, he seems to have perfectly captured it

The Three Witches Role In Macbeth Essay
The three witches play an obvious role in Macbeth, and are introduced in the very first scene. The
witches are sly and devious, using riddles to give Macbeth a false sense of security. It becomes clear
that they have insight into the future, and have fun while pushing Macbeth towards his downfall.
Shakespeare sets forth a description of witches that still exists today in literature, Halloween
costumes, and in movies. The three witches are portrayed as evil, gross, old hags that brew potions.
The three witches are described as having beards and warts, and put odd ingredients in their cauldron.
For example, they put baboon blood in to help cool the potion. They also have magical powers, like
vanishing into thin air, which is still a common stereotype.
When Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches, they quickly sensed that the witches were odd and
had supernatural powers. The witches told Macbeth that he is soon to be Thane of Cawdor, and will
eventually be king. Once Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor, he sets it in his mind that he is

  • 2. The Influence Of Television In The 1950 s World War II ended on September 2, 1945, and citizens in America were dwelling in the postwar booming economy. Thus, people had a hole burning in their pocket and many entrepreneurs found a means in which they could supply their products to consumers. Therefore, television became a method of communication, rather than the radio, the television allowed individuals to watch events in the comfort in their living room. In the 1950 s a television could be found in almost every American s home becoming known as the dawn of the television age. A famous sitcom in the 1950 s which first aired on October 5, 1951 is I Love Lucy. This particular show is the building blocks of the beginning of television, exposing viewers of the society in the 1950 s, along with the minimal similarities and mass differences when compared to today s shows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I Love Lucy stared Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, who plays Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo and Vivian Vance and William Frawley who played Mr. and Mrs. Fertz their best friends and landlords. The show took place in an apartment building in New York City, and Lucy who is a naive and stubborn redhead always got herself and her husband into trouble. In the specific show I watched from season one out of six episode twenty one titles New Neighbors. Lucy is curious about the neighbors who just moved in and she ends up snooping in their apartment and overhear them planning to blow up the capital and plotting her murder, but Lucy was unaware they were rehearsing a play. Thus, Lucy ends up getting Ricky, Fred, and Ethel involved, and they all end up in jail until the policeman reveals the neighbors are just actors. This one show conveys a commutative and family environment, with conservative information, unlike the shows of today. The society at in the 1950 s promoted high moral and family values through harmless comical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Two Ways Which Cultural Influences May Contribute To The... I would tell her that not every woman bleeds during their first time having sex. The bleeding is dependent on the person. A woman s hymen could have been torn in some other way before her first time having sex. Additionally, vigorous play and tampon use can also lead to earlier bleeding and explain why a woman s hymen is already torn. All women are different, thus pain and bleeding occurring during every woman s first time having sex is different too. 2. Briefly explain at least two ways that cultural influences may contribute to the development of sexual dysfunctions among women. (1 point) In our culture, we tend to give more masculine names to a man s penis and dirty sounding names to a woman s vagina. This contributes to women feeling uncomfortable and degraded. The male genitalia names mostly reference power, while names for women genitalia mostly have negative connotations. In Chinese culture, the vulva is referred to as something beautiful, such as a flower. Another influence to the development of sexual dysfunction among women is pornography. Some women tend to imitate what sexual workers in pornography do because it is a very large part of our culture. However, this leads to sexual displeasure for women and their partners. Imitating sexual pleasure leads to sexual disfunction. 3. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Define the term token resistance. Explain why token resistance may have negative consequences. (2 points) Token resistance is when someone says no to sexual advances, but they actually really want to engage in sex. Saying no in this scenario can lead to negative consequences because it prevents honest communication and gives into gender stereotypes. This can also give men the idea that it is okay to disregard women s refusals when it comes to sex. This can lead to men becoming more aggressive it they think a woman is using token ... • 4. International Highway Traffic Safety Administration 3.1 Introduction to Autonomous Cars Autonomous cars, also known as driverless cars, or self driving cars are vehicles that can drive themselves without a human driver to control the steering, acceleration, and braking (Thrun, 2010). They are designed to sense their surroundings with techniques of artificial intelligence, sensors with a 360° of view, radar, and global positioning systems, so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in self driving mode. Advanced control systems analyze the sensory information gathered to plan the best route to the desired destination. Obstacles and road signs are all part of the algorithm to be taken into account ahead of time. In addition, the autonomous vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Level 2 Combined Function This level involves automation of at least two primary control functions designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions. An example is adaptive cruise control in combination with lane centering. Level 3 Limited Self Driving Vehicles at this level of automation are able to operate autonomously for some portions of the journey. Transfer of control back to the human driver happens with some warning. The Google car is an example of limited self driving automation. Level 4 Full Self Driving The vehicle is designed to perform all safety critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip without manual control at any time during the trip. 3.2 Advantages And Limits There are many potential advantages to using a driverless car instead of a traditional human controlled vehicle: Reduction in car accidents. Most car accidents are caused by driver errors, but the autonomous system can monitor a broader range of sensors and react faster than a human driver. More efficient transportation due to higher speed limit Increase in road capacity and reduction in traffic congestion due to narrowed safety gap and intelligent parking technology. Occupants in an autonomous car will not be constrained due to age, license, disabilities, intoxication and other factors. Although we can benefit from the self driving cars, potential ... • 5. Analysis Of Walker And Ono Face The Gaze Rebecca Woods ART 352 AArt History III Midterm Assignment May 29, 2016 Walker Ono Face The Gaze A Look at Differing Approaches to Feminism Through Contemporary Art In the fifty years between the JFK assassination and a Kardashian selfie breaking the internet, two women representing different cultures, races, times, and attitudes created two individual pieces of art that became living commentary on the power dynamics at play in their world. In 1964, Yoko Ono challenged both societal convention and the artist/audience relationship in her exhibit Cut Piece, and decades later Kara Walker s Sugar Subtlety, 2014, challenged preconceived notions of racial symbolism and societal convention on a historical level. For both creators, the idea of The Gaze is explored and even featured, a term that addresses the controlling power a dominant group holds through visualization and often through sexuality. However, the ways in which this term is explored are different between the two women. While Ono s work highlights and even proves the Western male domination involved in the idea of The Gaze , fifty years later and a difference in culture sees Kara Walker s work create an artistic and intellectual revolution against the very power the Gaze tries to maintain, turning the concept on its head. As the surge of Second Wave Feminism swept across the Western world of the 1960s, Japanese artist and activist Yoko Ono created a work of performance art, entitled Cut Piece, ... Nemo looks at the world as if he can own it. Aronnax, on the other hand sees the world as amazing, a great master piece. I believe that Captain Nemo s outlook on the world and mankind is based off of hatred. We are raised to believe that a person needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying, if you think education is expensive, try ignorance. You may ask is college necessary? There are people out in the real world that have never set a foot on a college campus before and they are doing better than others that have their master s degree. There are many views from both sides that have a good argument. The main reason people go to college is because they were always told you will have a better life if you go to college. They do not want to be looked down upon in the eyes of society so they do what they think is best. The idea to become a productive person in society is that you must have some sort of college education. Being a college student is seen as more respectable, rather then being a garbage man or janitor because of the way society looks down upon these types of careers. Going to college and receiving a degree does not guarantee that a person is going to get a job right after they graduate. It is sometimes hard for some graduates to find a good job because there is so much competition with other graduates as well. Sometimes they may get a job and it could be in a totally different field of what they got their degree for. They must find a job though to pay off all the debt that an education has given them. Many students feel that some classes are a waste of time and money because they learn nothing about their chosen field. They have to take classes that have nothing to do with their major but must take the class to meet the core education requirement of the college. If these students receive a less than average grade in a class they feel is unneeded then that lowers their overall GPA. The major reason of going to college is to get a good job. The comparison of various solar technologies and future scope for this are briefly reviewed. Next, the issues and challenges in light trapping and the nature of textured interface, quality of the active layer material and antireflection coatings are detailed. Index Terms Fabrication, Solar cell technology, Crystalline silicon I. INTRODUCTION As the world is suffering from an ever diminishing stock of fossil fuels and serious pollution being caused by fuels, solar energy has become the most promising solution to the global energy crisis. Among various methods for generating energy from the sun, solar cells are an effective approach for converting solar energy into electrical energy for regular use. There is a wide range of research activities around the world that has demonstrated the efficiency potential of crystalline silicon cells. Most of the research studies has inferred, both theoretically and practically, that thin crystalline silicon cells can have low manufacturing costs while not compromising on reasonable efficiencies. Many researchers have attempted to study the impact of wafer thickness on the performance of crystalline silicon cells, and the best efficiencies on wafers with thickness under 200µm are typically in the range ... The Scottish people believe that their way of life and culture is at risk of becoming an English one, and for the reason, many Scots want independence. This is a good thing because it will be the first time in a very long time that the Scottish people will have a voice of their own, and choose their own fate as a nation. First off, we will start with how and why Scotland joined with the English to form the United Kingdom, and the Darien Venture and why it put Scotland in near collapse and total economic devastation. They then named the new Scottish colony New Caledonia and immediately discovered some very large problems with their plan: First off, on the western side of Panama, the mountains were a lot larger than expected, making overland trade completely impossible. Even if they built a canal, the technology to do so was still hundreds of years away. Second, the Scottish goods made of wool brought to trade with the locals was absolutely useless in the perpetual heat and humidity of South America. Third, the Spanish had already planted their flags on the beaches of Panama and many other parts of South America, and they were not that grateful to see the Scots arrive. And finally, without necessary supplies, diseases such as Dysentery spread quite quickly. Two full years persisted and with the cost of two thousand dead Scotsmen, they eventually abandoned their project. • 11. Similarities And Differences Between Small Town And Small... In every country, the land is divided into sections of towns and cities. These towns and cities are homes to people who have looked upon their preferences to decide where to locate their homes. Individuals take into account the advantages and disadvantages of both locations as well as the opportunities presented. Hence, there are several similarities and differences between big cities and small towns. To begin, a significant difference between big cities and small towns is the cost of living. The cost of living in a big city is much higher than that of a small town due to the increase of population and demand. In the city, landlords tend to increase rate prices of living spaces depending on the demand for the space and the number of applicants. Also, the price of food and clothing from stores is much more costly because it is located in a busy city. The owners of these businesses do this because of the high demand, but limited supply of both space and items. However, towns have a lower population level than cities and the cost of living spaces or items is not as expensive as the latter. The cost of living in towns is ... We used lossless compression to maintain the original features of the image in this process; there is a major problem which often is low compression ratios. We also use three types of wavelet transform which are discrete wavelet transform, non decimated wavelet transform, and stationary wavelet transform to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system for comparison and to show the differences between each type to overcome previous challenges. This paper proposed a system for lossless image compression based on the use of the three types of wavelet transforms using Arithmetic coding and Huffman coding with delta coding, which helps in the high compression ratio to clarify the extent of the difference and distinction between each type. How Transnational Corporations Affect the Sovereignty of a Nation Analysts agree that TNCs have altered the international relations principles that were once dominated by nation state relations (Kline, 2005).Transnational Corporations have in many ways exploited the weaknesses in the territorially guarded national laws. In many developing countries, organizations affiliated to external control have challenged and in some instances threatened government sovereignty. Economically stable countries such as the United States of America, have attempted to extend their influence to other countries of the world through TNC. This situation is what led to governments endorsing the non interference policy in national political affairs (United Nations, 2003). Interesting to note is the role that non governmental organizations played in this debate. Nongovernmental organizations have been known to not only exert political pressure on governments with little democratic space, but also collaborate with TNCs in this quest. (Heinrich, 2001). For example, many NGOs sort the active involvement of TNC in removal of the apartheid regime in South Africa. This in return, has created tension between these governments and the NGOs with the NGOs calling for the increased political involvement of the TNCs. Transnational Corporations have been steadfast in calling for respect, support and promotion of human rights (Kline, 2005). This has been done in reference to the United Nations Universal ... • 18. The Theoretical Relevance Of Marx s Theory Of Alienation The theoretical relevance of Marx s theory of alienation has been the subject of much contention since the posthumous publication of his Economic and Philosophical manuscripts in (). While the notion of alienation, along with its distinctly Hegelian underpinnings, has frequently been dismissed as a youthful error in comparison with Marx s supposedly more mature work, I argue that it is fundamental to his critique of capitalism. As Sayers (p.xi) notes, After his early period, Marx did not often use the term it and much other Hegelian language is for the most part abandoned. Nevertheless, the concept of alienation is implicit throughout Marx s work, and it continues to provide a major basis for his understanding of capitalism and for his critique of the impact of the market . It is important to relate Marx s philosophical project back to the always implicit notion of alienation as a set of relations between people and as a mode of being in the material world specific to capital(ism), otherwise there is a risk of overlooking the human relationships that underpin the capitalist mode of production. As Ollman () points out, By dismissing the essential human relations, the basic relations of alienation which underly capitalist production, its surface relations become everything (p.202). So, in dismissing the human relationships that maintain a given mode of production, it is reified thus, any critique that does not take this into consideration fails to address the matter ... Benihana simulation is a computer simulation of an operation management result based on concept of Benihana restaurant in Tokyo designed by Harvard school. The outline of the simulation is based on two seating position i.e. bar and the dining area. The target of this restaurant based simulation is to boost utilization, nightly profit and throughput time by using batching strategy, size of bar and cycle time and different advertising scheme. Simulation consist of 6 challenges where only 1 to 3 factor can be changed in challenges 1 to 5 whereas challenge 6 is a combination of strategies to gain the maximum output i.e. nightly profit by using all possible factors from 5 previous challenges. I started simulation by testing all the possible outcomes from challenge 1 to 5 and used the best scenario from one simulation to the other step by step and drew the conclusion at the very end. CHALLENGE 1: The first challenge was to determine whether or not batching dining room customer was beneficial. Batching means that the parties must reach a number of eight before they are seated. Two scenarios from the simulation show that batching is a better strategy that helped to increase profit. Utilization of the restaurant capacity is largest while batching. We could place 8 people at single table rather than placing group of 5 at one and 3 at another. The number of customers that can be served at one time highly influences the profit. According to the simulation it is more beneficial to use batching as average profit is $83.64 compared to average profit of $282.29 when not batched. By using batching benihana restaurants are able to eliminate bottleneck that occurs in the waiting area/bar. By doing so they are able to see more customers in their restaurants which can be seen in the graphs to the right. They lose fewer customers and more diners are served. • 29. Rigoberta Menchu Literary Analysis The Guatemalan Civil War was a period filled with constant battles between the national government and the indigenous Maya population. In I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala, we witness Menchu s compelling narrative highlighting indigenous life during the Guatemalan Civil War. Since publication, her narrative has achieved world acclaim as it was awarded the Nobel Peace in 1992. Such acclaim, however, has incited critics to question her narrative, as does anthropologist David Stoll in Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans. Although the questioning of historical accounts is valid, David Stoll s challenge of Menchu serves no purpose other than to discredit Menchu s personal narrative. Therefore, I find Menchu ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She recollects earning only a meager 20 centavos for picking 35 pounds of coffee a day. However, Stoll claims that Rigoberta never experienced working on the plantations as her father was not poor by local standards . Yet, regardless of her level of poverty, Menchu was still impecunious as she was living at the edge of the Altiplano mountains cultivating crops for the entirety of her day to simply provide for her family. Stoll continues to say that Menchu provides an inaccurate representation of her village as it was a more fluid society than conveyed . He states that the indígenas were learning better ways to make a living and were not working in plantations as much, instead, they were going to school in record numbers . Therefore, Stoll attempts to discredit the persona of Menchu as a humble indigenous woman who overcame a multitude of obstacles in order to tarnish her entire narrative as a false account in his desperate search for public recognition. Lastly, to disrepute Menchu, Stoll attempts to disgrace the peasant movement she and her family were heavily involved with. He denounces the protesters from Comité de Unidad Campesina (CUC), by criticizing their decision of carrying Molotov cocktails in their occupation of the Spanish embassy. Stoll asserts that it should not be assumed that all knew such weapons would be brought to portray ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Students Should Be A Preset Learning Position Essay First, students should be in a preset learning position in which they have greater attention and openness to the explanations and instructions. After presenting the learning objective, the material available and expected products, the student participation is requested to do a review about concepts and procedures, in order to review the steps to solve equations with binomials and polynomials. At this point, it is important to consider the appropriate momentum (Saphier and Gower, 1997) to keep lesson in motion by overlapping to maximize time taking attendance while the review is done, and provisioning to get all the necessary materials to avoid breaks in the process. Students are organized into working groups (a maximum of four participants) for the purpose of activating cooperation, as well as the dialogue and discussion about solving equations. Once students are ready to start its work, the teacher presents a summary of the most important aspects to consider during the process of solving the equations, circling around the working groups, answering questions and reviewing the progress of the students. This could be more effective if the instruction is subdivided (Saphier and Gower, 1997) by socializing and requesting some answers for example, and also by asking how they got to step two or three before reaching the solution, so that the lesson is flexible and accessible for all students according to their level of ownership since (Darch Crichlow, 2003) teachers can ... • 31. Impact of Institutional Factors and Election Mechanisms... In the 2012 United States Presidential election 58.2 percent of the registered voters turnout out to vote (IDEA). This figure is in stark contrast to many other wealthy democracies in the western world for the same election cycle (IDEA). This begs the question, why is voter turnout significantly lower in the US compared to the rest of the first world and other OECD countries? There are countless factors that could affect voter turnout, the most standard of which are based on socioeconomic status. But when considering only developed nations, more is at play in predicting turnout. Focus is turned to institutional factors and the effect election mechanisms, such as registration laws and party systems, have on political participation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These institutional factors increase the resources necessary for a member of the public to vote, thus discouraging political participation. Much of the proceeding argument hinges off of the Resource Model of Participation, which states that an individual votes, or more generally participates in politics, base on their personal stock of time, money, and civic skills (Verba, Schlozman, and Brady). It cost personal resources to vote, and thus inherently an individual can only do so if they posses those resources ahead of time. Additional credibility is gained from the Rational Choice Model of Participation, which assumes that an individual votes based on logic, and will only cast a vote if receiving a net benefit from doing so (Blais). In this way, even someone possessing the resources to vote may be turned away because the burden of institutional factors decreases the net benefit of voting. In the 2012 presidential election in the United States, as stated before, 58.2 percent of registered voters turned out to vote. During the same election period, 80.35 percent turnout out for the presidential elections in France, 71.55 percent in Germany, and 75.19 percent in Italy (IDEA). Only the highest election in each respective country is considered. While these percentages may seem similar, when talking about a nation on tens if not hundreds of millions of people, five percentage points one way or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Who Is Justinian Recreate The Byzantine Empire The Byzantine Empire, or the eastern Roman Empire, was formed in the year 330 after Roman Emperor Constantine I moved the seat of the Roman government to the city of Constantinople. It was designated a second Rome, and had the advantage of being located on an Asian Eurpoean trade route and on the Bosporus Strait, which made it incredibly hard to sack or besiege, since water surrounded half of the city. Constantinople was also free from any corruption and political assassination, which made governing easier to do and to manage as well. When the western Roman Empire collapsed in the year 476, the eastern half remained intact, and it remained relatively stable until Emperor Justinian came to power. Emperor Justinian was Emperor of the Byzantine Empire in the mid sixth century, from 527 to 565, and headed his empire s notable renovatio imperii, or restoration of the Empire during that time. Justinian devoted his reign to reclaim the lost western half of the Roman Empire, and recreate it through military conquest and social reform. The military conquest was to expand the Byzantine Empire so it reached the farthest extent of the Roman Empire, which was around the early second century, while the social reform was to recreate the Roman law that once applied during the height of the Roman Empire. So, these questions must be posed: How did Emperor Justinian attempt to reform and recreate the Roman Empire, and what did he do to restore it? Were his legislative and social reforms ... Mephistopheles creates chaos in the lives of others, including Faust, Gretchen, and the emperor, simply to entertain himself. This desire to destroy others, for his own personal gain is what leads him to make the wager with God. However, in the end, Mephistopheles falls victim to his own greed. Overcome by his own lust for the angels that arrive to save Faust, he loses the man s soul and consequently, the wager. Goethe s message is clear, one should never exploit others for personal gain and still bares weight today. One can imagine Goethe would have some choice words for Bernie Madoff. The talented Wall Street tycoon spent his efforts swindling friends and clients out of billions of dollars. Madoff was of course caught and will spend the rest of his life in jail. One can only imagine what Madoff could create if used his talents for good, rather than to advance his own despicable greed. Goethe s ability to understand the driving forces within the human psyche is one reason Faust still survives today. • 40. The Three Witches Role In Macbeth Essay The three witches play an obvious role in Macbeth, and are introduced in the very first scene. The witches are sly and devious, using riddles to give Macbeth a false sense of security. It becomes clear that they have insight into the future, and have fun while pushing Macbeth towards his downfall. Shakespeare sets forth a description of witches that still exists today in literature, Halloween costumes, and in movies. The three witches are portrayed as evil, gross, old hags that brew potions. The three witches are described as having beards and warts, and put odd ingredients in their cauldron. For example, they put baboon blood in to help cool the potion. They also have magical powers, like vanishing into thin air, which is still a common stereotype. When Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches, they quickly sensed that the witches were odd and had supernatural powers. The witches told Macbeth that he is soon to be Thane of Cawdor, and will eventually be king. Once Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor, he sets it in his mind that he is supposed to be king as well.
