Question 3: What kind of media
institution might distribute your
    media product and why?
           Sarah Walsh
The Production Process
The following stages state the process magazines go
through:
1. Magazine ideas (style of magazine, genre of
    magazine, target audience)
2. Research into similar products (choose features you
like and dislike, analyse their layout and audience)
3. Produce flat plans (rough first idea of plan for
    magazine)
4. Construct the magazine using media software like
    Photoshop and InDesign
5. Distribute the magazine to their target audience
Publishing
My target audience for my magazine of ‘indie scenesters’
is similar to Kerrang! and Rock Sound’s target audience so
I would publish my magazine in similar places as these
professional magazines. These magazines have a niche
target audience of only a certain group of people,
however there are a lot of people who buy these
magazines so they are published as a mainstream
product. Therefore my magazine would also be published
as a mainstream product through media publishers like
Bauer Media who produce magazines like Kerrang! and Q.
These magazines are sold in shops like WHSmith , HMV
and major supermarkets so my magazine would also be
published in the same places.
Who Would Distribute?
My magazine is largely similar to Kerrang! magazine as it
has the same target audience and genre and I was
influenced by features in Kerrang! magazine when
producing my magazine. Bauer Media distribute Kerrang!
magazine so I would try to get my magazine distributed
also by this media group as it already has experience and
knowledge in distributing lots of mainstream magazines
ranging from fashion magazines to music magazines. They
could use their techniques from distributing these
magazines, especially Kerrang! magazine when
distributing my magazine as it would be distributed in
similar places as Kerrang! as they follow a similar genre
and target audience.
Advertising My Magazine
There is now a wider range of advertising opportunities due to Web 2.0 which
is an advantage for me when advertising my magazine. Kerrang! and Rock
Sound magazine are advertised through social networking sites like Facebook
and Twitter as they are currently the most popular sites used by their target
audience and this is a free method of advertising. As my magazine is for a
similar target audience to these magazines I will advertise my magazine in the
same way as this as it is proven to be successful. Kerrang! also have a TV
music channel and radio channel so their magazine is advertised through this.
As Kerrang! magazine and my magazine will both be distributed through
Bauer Media and they are both of similar genres then Kerrang! magazine
could include advertisements for my magazine as the target audience reading
Kerrang! may be interested in reading my magazine as it will contain similar
content. I could also advertise my magazine through TV adverts in the
commercial breaks between TV music channels of the same genre of my
magazine like Kerrang! And Scuzz.
Distributing My Magazine
As I am distributing my magazine to a mainstream
market, I will need to distribute it to mainstream shops so
my target audience will be able to find and purchase it. I
will distribute it to shops like WHSmith, major
supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Tesco and HMV as this
is a music store so music fans will be able to purchase my
music magazine. I will also give the option for customers
to subscribe to my magazine so they will receive every
issue of the magazine to their door before every one else
at a cheaper price of purchasing each magazine
seperatley and a free gift will also be given to encourage
customers to go ahead with this purchasing option.
