WHAT IS MILLING MACHINE?
Milling machine is a machine by which we can
remove metal from the work piece through a rotating
cutting tool .

mm(X-direction). Eg:800mm
 Transverse movement: Total movement of saddle
along with table in mm(Y-direction). Eg:200mm
 Vertical movement: Total movement of table, saddle
& knee in mm mm(Z-direction). Eg:380mm
 Range of the speed: Speed variation in the gear
box in RPM. Eg: 45 to 200 rpm.
 Power capacity of the motor in HP. Eg: 2 HP

Drilling machine is a machine by which we can make
a cylindrical hole on solid body with a cutting tool.

WHAT IS LATHE MACHINE?
Lathe is a machine , which removes the metal from a
piece of work to the required shape & size by the
rotation of spindle. A cutting tool is used to remove
the metal.

WHAT IS GRINDING MACHINE?
A grinding machine is such type of machining using
an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool .It is used to
finish the work piece that must show high surface
quality.

SPECIFICATIONS
 Maximum vertical and horizontal travel of the table.
 Size of the table, i.e. length, width and depth of the
table.
 Maximum number of strokes per minute.
 Power of the drive motor.
AREA OF APPLICATION:
 Machining flat surfaces in different planes. Flat
surfaces are produced by single point cutting tools
in horizontal, vertical and inclined planes.
 Making features like slot, steps etc. which are also
bounded by flat surfaces.
 Forming grooves bounded by short width curved
surfaces by using single point but form tools.
 Some other machining applications of shaper are
cutting external keyways and splines, smooth
slitting or parting, cutting teeth of rack for repair etc.

AREA OF APPLICATION:
 The common machining works are those which are
also done by shaping machine.
 Machining the salient features like the principal
surfaces and guide ways of beds and tables of
various machines like lathes, milling machine,
grinding machines etc.
 Besides the general machining work, some other
critical work like helical grooving on large rods and
wide 2-D curved surfaces etc. can also be made if
needed.
SPUR GEAR MAKING
WHAT IS GEAR?
Gear is one of the machine tool elements which is an
integral and inevitable part of power transmission
system.
NOMENCLATURE OF SPUR GEAR
 Addendum: Radial distance between the addendum
circle and pitch circle.
 Deddendum: Radial distance between pitch circle
and root circle.
 Flank: Portion of the gear tooth between its pitch
circle and root circle.
 Clearance: Distance between the top of the tooth
and the bottom of the tooth.

PROCEDURE
• The round shape job is needed
• The job is clamped on the center chuck
of lathe machine
• Both the faces of the job are facing with
single point cutting tool of lathe
• Reduce the diameter of the job
PROCEDURE (CONT.)
• Hold the job with mandrel and placed
it in the bench vice
• Then the job is placed on the milling
machine
• Then the gear cutting process
occured
• Finally the gear is filled to get a clean
and smooth surface

 All the electric connections are checked
 Proper working fluid are need to use
 Rotation of crank is counted very carefully to
maintain equal distance of the teeth
 All the machines are to be shuted down after
making this

WHAT IS SINGLE POINT CUTTING TOOL
The cutting tool which cut the work piece with a single
point is called Single Point Cutting Tool. It must be
made of stronger material than the material of work
piece.

  • 41. AREA OF APPLICATION:  Machining flat surfaces in different planes. Flat surfaces are produced by single point cutting tools in horizontal, vertical and inclined planes.  Making features like slot, steps etc. which are also bounded by flat surfaces.  Forming grooves bounded by short width curved surfaces by using single point but form tools.  Some other machining applications of shaper are cutting external keyways and splines, smooth slitting or parting, cutting teeth of rack for repair etc.

AREA OF APPLICATION:  The common machining works are those which are also done by shaping machine.  Machining the salient features like the principal surfaces and guide ways of beds and tables of various machines like lathes, milling machine, grinding machines etc.  Besides the general machining work, some other critical work like helical grooving on large rods and wide 2-D curved surfaces etc. can also be made if needed.

  • 53. PROCEDURE (CONT.) • Hold the job with mandrel and placed it in the bench vice • Then the job is placed on the milling machine • Then the gear cutting process occured • Finally the gear is filled to get a clean and smooth surface
