3. INTRODUCTION:
• Romans were the first to try running the animal cart on parallel
lines of stones and bricks.
• In 15th century, wooden planks and beams were used in place of
stones in England and Europe known as “tramways”.
• “Plateways” was then made in which wood was then replaced by
iron plates and then angle irons came and finally iron was replaced
by cast iron.
• Hence speed was achieved.
• In 1771,steam locomotive was invented by Nicholas.
• First public railway of the world was opened for traffic in England in
1825.
• In India, Lord Dalhousie proposed rail lines between Calcutta &
Lahore; Agra & Bombay; Bombay & Madras. Hence, first train was
opened for traffic in 1853 between Mumbai and Thane.
• Opened in 1830, Liverpool Road station in Manchester is the oldest
surviving railway terminus building in the world.

4. • The first station of India, Victoria terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus)
was built in 1887 in the Bori Bunder area of Bombay to commemorate the
Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria by Frederick William Stevens with
influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and
traditional Mughal buildings.
• The longest platform in the world is at Kharagpur and is 2,733 ft. in length.

5. TERMINOLOGY:
• STATION- A place where passenger trains stop on a
railway line, typically with platforms and buildings.
• TERMINAL- The end of a railway or other transport
route, or a station at such a point.
• JUNCTION- A place where several routes, lines, or
roads meet, link, or cross each other a railway
junction.
• PLATFORM- A raised level surface on which people or
things can stand.

1. Wayside station- On such stations, train can only
move upside or downside.
2. Junction station- Lines from three or more
directions meet.
3. Terminal station- Reception line terminates in a
dead end. No round run is possible by train.

7. ROLE OF RAILWAY STATION:
1. Take up passengers and goods.
2. Control movement of trains.
3. To enable the trains to cross each other on a single line track.
4. Enable overtaking of goods train by express trains.
5. For repairing.
6. Fueling.
7. Adding or detaching bogies to the train.
8. For changing engines and running staff.
9. For changing direction of train.
10. To hold passenger and train in case of emergency.
11. To provide platform for passenger as well as goods to load and
unload.

9. FEATURES ON THE RAILWAY STATION:
1. Public requirement
-includes booking office,platforms,drinking
water,lights,sanitation,guides to help illiterate.
2. Traffic requirement
-includes arrangement of various counters, signals
control, platforms for goods.
3. Locomotive department
-includes fuels and water supply, cleaning of
locomotive, repairing.
4. General requirement.
-includes proper approach, clocks, coolies, foot-bridges.

1. Internal problems:
i. Space – entrance, waiting, parking.
ii. Pedestrian movement.
iii. Unauthorized occupancy.
iv. Cleanliness.

13. SITE SELECTION FOR CENTRAL
RAILWAY STATION:
1. Fair leveled ground.
2. Well-drained.
3. Proper supply of water.
4. Plenty open space for future expansion.
5. It should be nearer to the town.
6. Easy access.
7. Wide approach road in front and on way.
8. Economical.
9. Fulfill human needs.
10. Easily approachable for pedestrians.
11. Safe for all.
12. Less congested.
13. Clean.

14. PLANNING PROPOSAL:
1. Adequate space on platform.
2. Proper space for people to wait/rest.
3. A direct approach through elevators for handicapped and elderly
person.
4. A side walkway to allow movement of pedestrians.
5. Vendors to be given proper space/shops.
6. Cleanliness to be maintained.
7. Sky walk to be provided for approach from other public transport
unit.
8. Provision of booking counter outside or should be made online.
9. Sign board to be provided to guide tourists.
10. Display screens should be provided for getting train information.
11. Segregate the traffic by starting trains from the branch station.
12. Information to be wrote in different languages.

15. STUDY ON STATIONS OF GUJARAT:
• AHMEDABAD RAILWAY STATION-
– It is the main railway station of Ahmedabad,
Gujarat, India. It is also the biggest & busiest
railway station within Gujarat. It is second
highest income generating division in Western
Railways besides Mumbai Division.
– The station has twelve platforms. There are an
ample numbers of tea stalls, snack bars,
medical shops and enquiry desks. The station
also has one cybercafe which is run by Tata
Indicom. The government is also considering
making the station WiFi enabled.
– Ahmedabad Railway station has launched
hand push luggage trolley service at
Ahmedabad railway station.
– A golf car service for senior citizens and
physically challenged persons.

16. • Vadodara railway station-
– It is a fairly big railway stations with seven platforms on main line.
– Vadodara has one of the largest electric loco sheds in Western
Railway zone.
– The station is so located that easy access for all people is done.
– It is the surface station.
– The parking area is provided in ample.
– The sky walkway is provided to access directly to the bus stand.

17. • Surat railway station-
– It is the elevated station.
– Ticket reservation window outside the main building.
– Advance Railway Ticketing System is installed at the station to issue
unreserved tickets in advance.
– Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) is also available.
– Inside the Station you will find ATMs of Axis bank, State Bank, Canara
Bank, Dena Bank and also ATM's of some other bank in Main Building.
– Food Express Restaurant which is opened for all 24 hours.
– Proper sign boards and displays are present.
– Bus stand just outside the station premises.
– Rickshaw standing nearer to bus stand.
– Going north, Utran Railway Station is the nearest railhead. Udhna
Junction Railway Station is to the south of Surat.
– Traffic concentration.
