Based on the British comedy television quiz show QI hosted by Stephen Fry, four attendees test their “Quite Interesting” knowledge on places and planning.
Obscure or twisted questions will get you thinking about the relationship between planning and place. Yes, panellists get points for the right answer, but top points go to an interesting perspective or joke answer... we’ll deduct points for pathetically wrong answers.
We won’t just accept anyone - you’ll have to be “an ace on place” to nominate for the panel. You’ll score yourself with our skills audit on placemaking during the session. Don’t worry - we’ll give you a little bit of background first.
"Andrew's hosting of the QI style session on placemaking was informative, witty and very engaging. Many attendees spoke with me after the session advising that the humour kept them engaged and subsequently learning. Great session Andrew and well done" Dyan Currie, National President Planning Institute of Australia

This document discusses the issue of delays in formulating town planning schemes in Gujarat, India. It notes that out of 800 total town planning schemes in Gujarat, 350 are still pending state government approval. The presentation identifies several causes of delay, including the lengthy three-stage approval process, outdated land records, lack of staff and technical capacity at local authorities, and an inadequate review process concentrated at the state level. Experts suggest streamlining the approval process, limiting the state government's role, improving land records, and utilizing private sector expertise to help expedite the formulation of town planning schemes.
This graduate report discusses non-point pollution and urban planning measures to address it. Non-point pollution comes from diffuse sources like urban and agricultural runoff rather than a single identifiable source. The report outlines principal non-point pollution sources and planning strategies to regulate land use, require buffers, and use vegetation and ponds to filter runoff. A case study compares non-point regulation in the US and India, noting the US Clean Water Act requires state non-point programs while India lacks national initiatives. The summary states that without regulating industrial and municipal point sources first, non-point pollution will remain a low priority in India.
Eco City Development towards Developing Low Carbon SocietyMD. SAIDUR RAHMAN
This presentation focuses on eco-city development initiatives in developing countries towards developing low carbon society. Rapid urbanization in developing countries may be the most significant demographic transformation in our century as it restructures national economies and reshapes the lives of billions of people. At the same time, urbanization has also contributed to environmental and socioeconomic challenges, including climate change, pollution, congestion, and the rapid growth of slums. But as a major style of residential environment, city, has been endowed new contents by new ideas ever emerged in the history and eco-city development has emerged as a way to address climate change issues in the context of developing sustainable cities in developing countries. Eco-cities have the potential to address many of the problems like climate change and socio-economic aspects associated with urban development, as does the concept of sustainable development in an urban setting. Drawing on lessons learned from the planning and development process of several low-carbon eco-cities, this paper explores the potential of an integrated urbanism approach for developing countries. The objective is not only to mitigate factors contributing to climate change, but to manage risk, maximize resilience, and promote the successful economic and social growth of the urban eco community in developing countries. An integrated urbanism approach to planning may give us the tools to leapfrog the environmental and public health costs of economic progress and create a new model for cities across the developing world.
