Rutgers Education Research Paper
A Rutgers education will not only allow me to grow as a college student but as a person overall.
Graduating from Rutgers will hold a greater value in the outside world when I apply for jobs as this
university has many well known schools like the Business School or the School or Arts and Sciences.
Since Rutgers is well known for their programs, this would allow me to be able to excel in my major
of choice and be able to take different classes that would allow for my knowledge to grow more than it
would at Rowan University. The classes that Rutgers will offer compared to Rowan would challenge
me to work harder and push my limits in order for me to grow and succeed as a person. Having a
Rutgers education will help my career goals because while I am there, I will have many opportunities
to join clubs and organizations that interest me. Since I plan on ... Show more content on

Rutgers will help me personally because of how diverse the university is. Having a diverse group of
students in my major would benefit me, since Rutgers has people attending from different areas of the
country/world that have gone through different experiences and I would be able to learn from them.
Rutgers has a population that consists of all types of backgrounds, which is something that would help
me grow as a person due to being exposed to different types of cultures. This would help me when I
get a job since in the business field one needs to have people skills and since I would be in a diverse
school, I will get to meet and interact with different people as I would when I would have a job. This
results in not only being better in academics but also being a well rounded individual and know how
to interact with different races/cultures. All things considered, having a Rutgers education will help
me to better myself as a college student and benefit my learning and the different types of
opportunities I would be exposed

When Christopher Marlowe, the most famous playwright in his time (Lace, 79), died, William
Shakespeare was his successor. Shakespeare decided drama was to be his career after seeing the
Queen s Players during a visit to his hometown of Stratford on Avon in 1587 (Lace, 79). By the time
of Marlowe s death, Shakespeare was already well known for his three part Henry VI in 1592 (Lace,
79). His plays Love s Labour s Lost and Romeo and Juliet , both in 1594, were performed and he
became the most outstanding playwright of his time (Lace, 79). Before Elizabeth s reign was over,
Richard II , Julius Caesar , Henry V , and Hamlet had been performed (Lace, 79). James Burbage was
the second most influential actor of the Elizabethan period, but not only for his acting talent. Burbage
built the first ever public playhouse in England, opening in 1576 (Unknown, 218). Burbage financed
the building of The Theater alone, a well off man but was still considered a rogue. Actors were not the
only influence on theater. When Mary Tudor decided the throne was rightfully hers, the War of the
Roses ensued (Lace, 73). Because of the War of the Roses, many nobles, that employed actors, were
killed (Lace, 73). This forced actors to form their own troupes (Lace, 73). In 1572, parliament passed
the Poor Laws, making it a criminal offense to be a vagabond (Lace, 75). This reduced the number of
acting companies and required them to be

Glass Menagerie Disadvantages
The Glass Menagerie Essays Prompt One The characters in The Glass Menagerie are theorized to be
based off of people in Tennessee Williams s life. The Wingfield family are supposedly similar to
Tennessee s own kin. With that, all of the characters in the play have their strong points and
weaknesses in their personalities. Tom, the son in the Wingfield family, works in a warehouse. He
dreams of adventure and longs for some sense of purpose beyond the town that he lives in. Although
he takes care of his family s financial stability, he clashes with them constantly. Tom and his mother,
Amanda, argue very often, for example when he gets irritated by her interrupting his writing. Tom
rants, Look, Mother I haven t got a thing, not a single thing left in this house that I can call my own,
(1.3). Tom lets all of his anger out at once, building it up until the moment he snaps. Instead of settling
his problems in his life at home assertively, he claims to go to the movies, only coming back after
hours of being away. However, this is classified as a positive trait. It s better for him to calm down and
settle the issues later on, when he won t risk saying something impulsive or upsetting. When he gets
home after his trips to the movies one night, he speaks to his mother after she claims she will not
speak to him again, I m sorry, Mother. I m sorry for all those things I said. I didn t mean it. I
apologize, (1.5). Another positive trait about Tom is his gentleness towards Laura. When he converses
with her, his guard is let down and speaks to her kindly. Even though he tries to appear bleak on the
outside, once he opens up he shows his softer, more careful side. Amanda, the mother of Laura and
Tom, can be very absent minded and in her own world of expectations. She refers back to her time as
a young woman and focuses on getting a gentleman caller for Laura; she s even more interested in
having the gentleman caller for herself rather than Laura. Amanda struggles with giving her children
what they want, refusing to accept the fact that Tom wants to leave and adventure out into the world.
Because of this, she causes a lot of family conflict, stating later on in the play, My devotion has made
me a witch and so I make

Three Pointer Shot Percentage Of Mba Essay
My aim in doing this project with the set of data I have is to find out if the amount of games a person
plays in the NBA effects there three pointer shot percentage. NBA stands for National Basketball
Association. A three pointer applies to a game called basketball. You shoot a three pointer when you
are behind the arc on one side of the court. The answer to this question may seem simple but it really
isn t. For example, in the NBA there has been a number of people that played 20 games but has a
better three pointer shot percentage than someone that had played 50 games in the NBA. Even though
someone plays more games in the NBA, it does not mean that their shooting average would be better
than someone who has not played as much games as they did. ESPN is a U.S. based global cable and
satellite television channel owned by ESPN Inc. I am not sure how the number of games effects three

the data set. After, I will make a line regression to graph the line of best fit for my data to determine if
it is strong, moderate, or weak. Then use correlation coefficient to to tell whether the slope is negative

Ethnographic Paper: Differences in Study Habits by Gender at King Library
A library, by definition, is a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for
reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may
be read or borrowed (Merriam Webster). However, for students at Miami University, the word library
may have different connotations. After asking several fellow students the first word that comes to
mind when someone talks about the library, the responses I received varied from the expected books ,
study , and focus , to more personal emotions such as sad and depressed . King Library, named for
longtime library director and benefactor Edgar Weld King, has been the largest library and main
scholarly hub at Miami University since 1966. Open 24 hours a day, you are bound to see students
studying, socializing, or even sleeping at any given hour of the day in King. Comprised of four floors,
including the basement, students are expected to meet the noise level expectations of each floor;
students should anticipate a more relaxed and loud experience in the basement whereas the third floor
maintains a level of almost absolute silence. For the past several weeks, I have been observing
students and their studying habits in the basement and café area of King Library. In particular, I have
been interested in how the gender of the student has an

Comcast s Residential Brand Xfinity- Essay
Comcast s residential brand Xfinity has already released a video monitoring product for its market.
Even though this gives Comcast Business a framework for the launch of the Smart Office product,
there are still risks to take into account before the launch of this new project. Anticipated/possible
risks include:
1. Potential Bottleneck due to lead time with Camera Orders
a. This is the first time Comcast Business has worked with Axis, our video camera supplier. To stay
lean Comcast will be ordering only what is needed for pending orders. If demand is high, customers
may have to endure long wait times for installation because of camera inventory at the local Comcast
warehouse/Technician dispatch center.
2. Inability to measure demand in new markets
a. Comcast has only trialed this product in select Northeastern US states. Demand is currently
unknown in other regions. Competition is low, but this does not necessarily present and opportunity
for high demand.
3. Potentially being forced to use 3rd Party install technicians
a. For standard internet or phone installations, Comcast will sometimes utilize contractors to complete
the work. This is usually when order volume is high, as we do not have enough technicians to
complete all orders in a timely manner. We have received customer feedback that the contractors are
not as knowledgeable as internal staff, and do not provide the same high quality work. If Comcast is
forced to utilize 3rd party technicians, quality of the Smart

Beautiful Music of the Middle Ages
Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul, it is one of the most
magnificent and delightful presents God has given us Martin Luther. Music was a part of life then and
it is a part of life today. Without music, life itself would be a mistake. Seeing the changes over the
years is a great way to follow the patterns and differences this way of communicating has shown us.
Some of the more popular music was the Gregorian Chant, Organum, Motet and Madrigal.
In the early Middle Ages around 590 ACE the Gregorian Chant was popularized by Pope Gregory the
Fourth. The Gregorian Chant was a form of monophonic tune of the Roman Catholic Church (Music
Through the Ages). Monophonic is a musical style employing a single melodic line without
accompaniment. This style was oral by tradition and only served as a memory aid for a singer who
already knew the melody (http://en.wikipedia.org). Memorizing is a difficult task, it is even harder to
memorize music that was taught to them orally. Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using
neumes, an early form of musical notation (http://www.britannica.com). These neumes later formed
the modern four and five line staff development. Being a monophonic tune the Gregorian Chant was
losing interest and a new style was born.
In the Musica Enchiriadis musical handbook , Organum consisted of two melodic lines moving
simultaneously note against note. Organum changed the way of music for the medieval people;

Essay Informative Speech About Tattoos
It seems like everyone has one these days. What used to be the property of sailors, outlaws, and biker
gangs is now a popular body decoration for many people. And it s not just anchors, skulls, and
battleships anymore, from school emblems to Celtic designs to personalized symbols; people have
found many ways to express themselves with them. Maybe you ve thought about getting one. Well
before you head down to the nearest tattoo shop and roll up your sleeve, there are a few things you
need to know.
So You Ask, What Exactly is a Tattoo? A tattoo is a puncture wound, made deep in your skin, that s
filled with ink. The tattoo is made by penetrating your skin with a needle and injecting ink into the

Although it looks a lot cooler than a big scab, a new tattoo is also a wound and like any other scrape,
puncture, cut or penetration to your skin, a tattoo is at risk for infections and disease. You need to
make sure you are up to date with your immunizations (especially hepatitis and tetanus shots) and plan
where you will get medical care if your new tattoo does become infected. Signs of infection include
excessive redness or tenderness, prolonged bleeding, pus, or changes in your skin color around the
tattoo. If you have a medical problem such as heart disease, allergies, diabetes, skin disorders or any
condition that affects your immune system or are prone to infections, you should ask your doctor
before deciding to get a tattoo. Also, if you are prone to getting keloids (an overgrowth of scar tissue
in the area of the wound), it s probably best to avoid getting a tattoo altogether.
Avoiding Infection It s very important to make sure the tattoo studio is clean and safe, and that all
equipment is disposable (needles, gloves, masks, etc.) and that everything is sterilized. You can call
your state, county, or local health department to ask for recommendations on licensed tattoo shops, or
to ask about any complaints about a particular studio.
Professional studios take pride in their cleanliness; here are a few things to check for:
Make sure the studio has an autoclave which is a device that

Lady Macbeth Influence
With some people it s easy to talk them in into doing something that can be mostly always wrong, or
sometimes into something that s good for them. In Shakespeare s drama play, The Tragedy of
Macbeth, Macbeth being the main character. He s told a fate that one day he ll become king, that was

fate that was told to Macbeth makes his decisions harder as the play goes on, also being influenced.

Caged Bird Thesis
Thesis Statement: Maya Angelou s poem, Caged Bird, demonstrates her emotional stress of grief and
desire for freedom, which stems from her personal struggle as an African American woman and from
the viewpoints of her peers.
She chose to write about her thoughts through beautiful poetry which related to her past dealing with
racism, sexuality, and separation.
Like an unfinished painting, the autobiographical series is an ongoing creation, in a form that rejects
the finality of a restricting frame. Its continuity is achieved through characters who enter the picture,

Suicide is a major public health concern and depression is one of the main risk factor. Gordon stated
that Over 40,000 people die by suicide each year in the United States; it is the 10th leading cause of
death overall. Knowing the warning signs can help you save a life. Some of the warning signs for
suicide are talking about wanting to die, withdrawing from family and friends, using alcohol or drugs
more often, and no hope for the future. There are more warning signs that you can look for but these
are the most obvious. Gordon stated that Suicidal thoughts or actions are a sign of extreme distress,
not a harmless bid for attention, and should not be ignored. Some people do not take the signs serious

Observing A Second Grade Classroom
For my ethnographic research I am observing a second grade classroom. I have chosen to observe
classroom reading and writing time with the students. In addition I have decided to interview three
people (teacher, parent, and student) from the school at which I am completing my observation hours,
P.S. 152 Gwendoline N. Alleyne School in Woodside, Queens to have a solid understanding of my
research. I will use alternative name for students and teacher. Mrs. S is piloting a writing workshop in
her classroom and ELA/ literacy standards will be the primary focus throughout her teaching. My
primarily focus will be on the classroom routine.
Mrs. Santos had been a public school teacher for 7 years prior to her voluntary leave of 7 years. This is
her second year after return back to teaching. She has taught at this school only. She taught third grade
in the prior years. This is her first year teaching second graders.
I consider Mrs. S to be coordinated. She has her materials well labeled and organized throughout her
classroom. Her desk area also appears organized. Mrs. S shared with me that she begins her school
day one hour before the students arrived. This schedule allows her to plan for the day ahead. Mrs. S s
classroom is large but functional. She has a total of 30 students in her class. The seating arrangement
consists of 6 sets of grouping desks as Mrs. S has 6 groups of 5 students to an area. This set up offers
several benefits including encouraging collective learning,

Radical Feminism Versus Liberal Feminism
Feminist theories are an extension of feminism into theoretical and philosophical discourse. They aim
at understanding of the nature of gender inequality .They in turn examine women s social roles and
life experiences .While in general some provide a critique of social relationships .Most feminist
theories also focus on analysing gender inequality and the promotion of women s rights, interests and
issues .Among such theories are the Liberal feminism and the Radical feminism theories. While
Liberal and Radical feminism both seek to ensure that women have access to resources and human

Liberal feminists wish to achieve gender equality by working with the system rather than over

they want the institution to be structured in such a way that it is not oppressive and imbalanced . In

fundamental cause of oppression. Radicals therefore believe

The Pros And Cons Of Indian Removal
The Indian Removal has long been a debated issue. The two sides had radically different viewpoints
on the ordeal that helped shape America. The Indians, naturally, were against their removal from their
homelands, and they had two major protest against their removal. The first reason was the fact that
they were there first by thousands of years only for white men to invade and tell them to live
somewhere else because the white men were superior to the natives. The second reason was that the
U.S government kept breaking treaties and was forcing out tribes that had gone through the proper

The New York Times Article
The New York Times article When ultra religious Hasidic women choose to lead secular lives, their
freedom comes at a price is an example of anomic suicide. Anomie is a concept developed by the
sociologist Emile Durkheim to describe a lack on social norm and values or unclear norms. The
absence of norms makes people feel unguided in the choices they have to make. Durkheim linked
anomic suicide to isolation and lack of social regulations. This lack of social regulations and norms
lead to a sense of emptiness and despair. Those ideas lead to situation where individuals feel
disconnected from society. The article talks about a girl named Faigy Mayer, who committed suicide
after leaving an extremely religious life as a Hasidic Women for a secular life. One of the main factors
that contribute to her death was her transition from a highly religious community to a social
environment without religious regulations. The drastic social change lead to Anomie. According to the
New York times article, she grew up on a Belz community in Brooklyn that was a devoutly religious
Hasidic sect which had very strict set of rules and rigid gender roles. When she left her religious
community, all those rules and boundaries stablished by her community were left behind too. This
lack of rules and social regulations in her new social environment led to the anomic suicide. Once she

Essay On How To Shoot A Baseball Bat
One of the hardest things to do for nearly any athlete is to hit a baseball. Some of the greatest sports
heroes ever, couldn t but the bat on the ball no matter how hard they tried. Even players talented
enough to make it professionally, have an on base success rate of less than 33%.
Hitting a baseball is difficult, but consistent contact can be made if you swing properly. Here are some
three tips on how to swing a baseball bat correctly, great suggestions for any level of competition.
Solid Foundation
A good baseball swing starts with your base. You need a good foundation to productively make
contact with a baseball. When your foundation is unstable, your swing will be erratic; as well will be
the results. Work on stable stance that establishes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The component they all have in common is sturdiness. Feet are spaced approximately twice the width
of your hips, with slightly bent knees and your body weight shifted towards the balls of your feet.
Open Your Hips
This is one of the more difficult aspects of properly swinging at a baseball. When your hips open to
soon, you will be behind the pitch. Opening your hips too early will cause you to swing over the ball,
or be too far out in front.
Rotating your hips at precisely the exact instant the bat makes contact with the ball is how to generate
the most power from your swing. The most accomplished hitters refer to this concept, as launching
your hips. The stance and hip rotation are where a hitter s power is generated.
Can t Hit What You Can t See
Tracking the ball is one aspect of hitting a baseball. It cannot stop at any point during your swing. If
your eyes drift, so will your head. When you pull your head off the ball, you will compromise your
swing.
Most of the time you ll miss the pitch completely, or at best make poor contact. To keep you head on
the ball, never take your eyes off the ball. The best hitters profess to actually seeing the ball make
contact with that bat. Good hitters insist, you cannot hit what you cannot see, so focus on the ball to
help keep your head

Huck Finn Satire Essay
Satire in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Many authors use satire to discuss issues in society that
they have opinions on. These authors express their opinions by mocking the issues in a subtle way in
their writing. Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain satirizes many societal
elements. Three of these issues include the institution of slavery, organized religion, and education. By
satirizing slavery and the prejudice placed against blacks in Huck s society, Twain takes a stance
against these institutions. There are many situations throughout the novel that mock slavery in

will go to hell (214) anyway, so he tore it up (214). Organized religion and society has taught Huck
that turning Jim in is the right thing to do, but he cannot bring himself to do it. Huck realizes that
everyone s life is important. Huck s life changing realization represents Twain s own opinion on the
issue of slavery. By mocking the issue of education, Twain s own ideas are incorporated into the
novel. When Tom and Huck form a gang, Tom is chosen as the leader. When asked what ransomed (8)
means, Tom claims that he does not know but they have got to do (9) it, because he has seen it in
books (9). The gang blindly follows Tom s orders because he is the most educated out of the group.
They believe that Tom s education automatically makes him more intelligent than them. Later in the
novel, Jim gets captured by the Phelps family. While trying to break Jim out of his temporary jail, Tom
claims that they must use picks and shovels and not modern conveniences because it will be more
authentic to a real jail break (243). Huck goes along with Tom s overly elaborate and inconvenient
plan to free Jim because he believes that

Research Paper On Corgi
Aside from Shiba Inu, another famous breed of dog that s definitely making noise on the Internet is
the Corgi (or by using the right term used by serious dog lovers, the Welsh Corgi). Corgis are these
cute little dogs that have stubby little feet that increase their cuteness level by 100 folds. Since these
feet are short, it makes them look like trotting when they are actually running.
Corgis are like the Tyrannosaurus Rexes of the dogs. They can bark loudly and even bite some of your
toes and fingers because they were bred as herders, but these characteristics are softened up with their
tubby little feet.

Road To El Dorado Analysis
Road to El Dorado
The movie I watched was the Road to El Dorado. The directors of this movie are Eric Bibo Bergeron,
Don Paul, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Will Finn, and David Silverman. The top three actors of this film are
Kevin Kline as Tulio, Kenneth Branagh as Miguel, and Rosie Perez who plays the voice of Chel. Road
to El Dorado was produced in 2000 by Dreamworks Animation. It includes subtitles and is in color.
The movie is also now available to watch on Netflix which is where I watched it. Two con artist Tulio
and Miguel leave Spain as stowaways on Cortes s ship in 1519 that is headed to Mexico with a special
map. The map is supposed to lead to a city of gold, but when they reach the city things aren t what
they expect. While the two convince the people that they are gods they meet a girl name Chel who
knows their true identity and helps with with their con for a share of their gold. However, Chel
becomes more than an accomplice to Tulio, and Miguel is, you know, Miguel. Then things start to get
messy when Tzekel Kan tries to expose who the are to the people of El Dorado. As the men try to stop
him by impressing the crowd they also ask if the people can build them a boat home. Things work out

The Death Of The Moth Annie Dillard Analysis
Annie Dillard s piece The Death of the Moth , is about Dillard being reminded of the death of a moth
she observes and how it relates to herself, this piece is a great depiction of the impact of life and death.
Dillard describes her surroundings living in a rural area and within her bathroom is a spider which
Dillard reminds of a moth that she killed in her past when she sees the web that the spider has spun
and how it has caught many bugs including two moths. She is intrigued by the dead moth s bodies and
givings a vivid description of the bodies While describing the moth s dead torn body she relates it to a
personal experience from her past where she watched a moth die with candle two years ago. Dillard

Knowing this, she takes her experience and uses it to write this piece and uses it to spread her message
and her feelings toward the topic.
Dillard uses descriptions of her experience to flow with the story using metaphors and other ways of
conveying her message about life and death. Through this she allowed us to peer into her life in that
moment and convey the feeling she felt indirectly through the descriptions. This makes the text
effective because it causes the reader to look at oneself about life and death and the other topics that
could come from the essay. This gives her credibility because she experienced it first hand (ethos,
pathos). Playing on your emotion from person experience with death. Making the text more effective.
To conclude, Annie Dillard s piece The Death of the Moth; is about Dillard being reminded of the
death of a moth she observes and how it relates to herself, this piece is a great depiction of the impact
of life and death. She talks about her personal experience in a tone that

Reading Comprehension Of English Language Learners At...
As time Prevailed, school s, students and teacher s expectations increased; we have noticed a decrease
in academic success. Our schools have many different types of learners who are required to meet the
same standard at the end of the year to be considered for promotion. In common classrooms, there are
about twenty five thirty students per one teacher. However, we must keep in mind that students learn
differently and at a different pace. Unfortunately, there are standards and expectations students need to
show to be considered on the level, and proficient in the content area. Differentiated Instruction is a

In today s education many teachers are told the expectations in the classroom and have not explained
the importance or why it is being done. Teachers should have purpose to ensure every child s success.
We will closely look at two teachers who have implemented graphic organizers and student reading
comprehension growth. In addition, we will look at a classroom teacher who has not implemented
graphic organizers and student outcome. Questions:
1. How is graphic organizers implemented in the lesson for ELLs?
2. What strategies are used to introduce graphic organizers in the classroom for ELLs?
3. How often are ELL students using graphic organizers?

Children are classified as English Language Learners (ELL) if their native language is another
language other than English. In addition, children are classified as ELL if testing shows some
limitations in their English language abilities, whether it is speaking, listening, reading, or writing.
Parents are required to complete a home language survey when registering their children for school. If
the home survey suggests that the child speaks another language at home they are required to take the
LAB R exam. IF the child does not pass the exam they are emitted to ESL education.

What Is The Premack Principle
Introduction Over the course of this semester I volunteered at Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, which is a
tutoring institution for the Latino children in the local Pinewood trailer park community.
Children from preschool through the fourth grade attend Oasis every Monday through Thursday,
excluding holidays. I worked with around twenty kindergarteners that attended the after school
program. With the younger children I tutored, we focused on working with their numbers, simple
mathematics, and reading in English. The older children worked on subjects more typical to a school
setting; the tutors helped (keep with the past tense since that s what you ve been using the entire

This is called the Premack Principle which is defined by Geiger: a preferred behavior... may be used
as an effective reinforcer of a less preferred activity. (1996) This principle works especially well with
young children who need guidelines and parameters. Toward the beginning of the semester, James was
easily frustrated and this frustration surfaced during writing quite frequently and sometimes also
during reading. With both circumstances, I would get his attention, tell him that it was okay and to
take his time, and to try again. With just a little encouragement from me, he was almost always able to
figure out how to read or spell the word that had frustrated him. Then I would tell him that he did a
great job and give him a high five. This simple act of patience and encouragement worked wonders
with this boy. Stephanie was oriented towards learning goals. She always worked hard on her reading
and writing and knew her numbers. One day early in the semester when James did not want to do his
homework she said, I always do my homework because I do not want to get bad grades or for my
teacher to be sad. She would also frequently ask me if she had done a good job

Simile: A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things, using like or as.
Example: An apprehensive night crawled slowly by like a wounded snake, and sleep did not visit

The Most Dangerous Game, page 32
Function:
Context Rainsford is hiding from General Zaroff in the forest of Ship Trap Island. After running
around in the forest and trying to make an untraceable trail, Rainsford finally rests high up in a tree.He
tells himself that Zaroff will never find him, but in the back of his mind he worries about being found
and killed. This makes Rainsford to feel like the night was going by very slowly and this worry kept
Rainsford up for a long time. The stress from the Most Dangerous Game is getting to Rainsford s

The night is described as apprehensive , which means fearful of something bad happening. The night
is further compared to a wounded snake, because like any wounded animal, it would move very
slowly and painfully. The author is describing the night like this, to compare it to how Rainsford is
feeling while he is hiding in the forest. Rainsford is very apprehensive himself, because he fears
Zaroff will find him and kill him. Even so zealous a hunter as General Zaroff could not trace him
there, he told himself; only the devil himself could follow that complicated trail through the jungle
after dark. But, perhaps the general was a devil (pg.32). The night and a wounded snake are compared
by using a simile, because a wounded snake moves slow and the night is moving slow for Rainsford.
Rainsford feels like the night is so long, because he cannot fall asleep and all he can do is worry about
his life. This quote is an example of simile, because it is comparing the night to a snake, which gives
the reader a better understanding of what the author is trying to get

The Centralization And Development Of Urbanization In Africa
Africa is a rapidly urbanizing continent, experiencing tremendous growth and transformation with an
increasing concentration of cities. Today, it boasts a greater number of urban dwellers than Europe,
Australia, North or South America. However, situations were not always so promising. The arrival of
imperialism and the start of colonial rule in the 19th century served to exploit the growth of physical,
economic, and human resources of a flourishing Africa to benefit European powers. By setting severe
economic and social restrictions on things such as trade and education, the Europeans developed a
colonized state which arrested all other natural development of the African system. Nonetheless,
during the approximately five and half decades after independence, citizens began to slowly migrate to
city hubs around the continent as various countries like Ethiopia and Tanzania developed socially and
politically. This movement from rural to urban, a typical mobility characteristic of Africa, resulted in
an expansion of leadership, institutions, and technical domains such design and finance. Urbanization
has thus played a significant role in the development of factors including gender, inequality, and
economic growth, as well as downturn. However, it has presented both opportunities and challenges
which, in turn, have impacted the state of cities in modern day Africa.
Since 1960, African cities have been growing fast, more so than the population. A direct result of this
rapid urbanization has been the growth of opportunities for people seeking a better, comfortable life
with their transition out of rural settings. For decades, this increased centralization has brought various
cultures, perspectives, and talents together in an effort to place Africa on the global, economic scale.
However, a drastic consequence of the growth of cities has been an increased inequality amongst its
members, both economically and in terms of the standard of living. Income inequality creates a
significant discrepancy between the rich and the poor. Whereas large manufacturers enjoy wealth
through their involvement in an export oriented economy, laborers work through grueling hours in
tiring conditions to earn minimum wage which can barely

On Florida s Space Coast in Brevard County, the main landfill that is located on Sarno Road, is

of the county is expected to exceed capacity within the next twenty years. Because of the current need

in 1991. The land was purchased for over ten million dollars by Brevard County and hundreds of
thousands of dollars has been spent by the county in court, on 134 wetland credits that were required
to be purchased by the county, by the state, outside research, maintaining the land, and the drafting of
the landfill proposal itself . The three thousand acres of land bought by the county currently

marketing the NHL in 1995 and beyond. After a spectacular 1993 94 season, the NHL s 1994 95

inch diameter puck, and shooting it at 100 mph, so sometimes you lose sight of the puck if you re new

an Eastern and Western Conference. Within each of the conferences are two divisions: the Atlantic and
the Northeast in the Eastern Conference, and the Central and the Pacific in the Western Conference.
The teams play an 82 game regular season from October to April, followed by four rounds of playoffs
where teams play a bestof seven game series to advance to the next round. The eight teams in each
conference with the best regular season records (including division leaders) play three rounds to
determine the conference winner. Finally, the two conference champions compete for the Stanley Cup,

China s Survival of Crisis Due to Economic Reforms
In the years before 1976, many unwise policies were carried out which brought China into a crisis of
communism, or a state in which communism was threatened. The Great Leap Forward and the
Cultural Revolution were specifically the main causes of the crisis of communism and the mastermind
between these two movements, Mao Zedong, can be held responsible for their initiation. The Great

From post 1976 onwards, Deng Xiaoping and his conservative pragmatist government would bring
great reform to China, which would allow her to tide over the troubles caused by the crisis in
communism. Indeed, it would seem that his economic reforms were the main reason for China s
survival, as opposed to political reform. Under Deng Xiaoping, action was taken to move China from
a Soviet style command economy to a more capitalist market economy. On the other hand, political
reform was not as pronounced as Deng wished to retain the traditional communist style of party
dictatorship.
When Deng came into power, China s economy had not progressed as much as Mao had imagined it

communism at all but he felt that if they could bring greater prosperity to China, it was worth it to
adopt these new measures.

Berlin Crisis Research Paper
The Berlin crisis started in February 1948 when the Western allies held the London conference to
discuss how to jumpstart the German economy after two years of disagreeing with the Soviets. The
Western allies wanted to implement a free market economy which all of their nations had and felt was
the best option while the Soviet Union wanted to convert Germany to a planned communist economy.
Because the London conference went against the regulations as laid out during the Potsdam
Agreement, the Soviet Union s protest was quick and they withdrew from the Allied Control Council
(ACC). In June of 1948, the Western allies introduced a new currency to the American, British, and
French zones called the Deutsche mark without consulting the Soviets. This is considered the last
straw, and the Soviet Union announces their plans to introduce a new currency in their zone and
subsequently block off Berlin before the Western allies can implement their currency. However, the
west had already smuggled in around 250 million Deutsche marks to West Berlin without the Soviet
Union finding out. The Berlin blockade consisted of no land or water access to the city, which made it

Essay about Elizabethan England
Bloody Painful: Crime and Punishment in Elizabethan England
This article s purpose is to express the danger of breaking the law in England. Most of the
punishments of our time are deemed cruel and unusual. The death penalty can no longer be enacted in
cases of theft or highway robbery. The following paragraphs will describe the various instruments of
punishment (torture) of the period.
One out of the ordinary punishment of this era is the drunkard s cloak. It is a punishment for public
drunkenness; the name of it is somewhat misleading. The flaw in the name comes from the fact that
the cloak is less a cloak and more a barrel. The drunk was forced to don a barrel and wander through
town while the villagers jeer at him. Holes were cut ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One more odd punishment worth mentioning is the ducking stool. Like the brank, it was a punishment
for women whose speech was considered too brash and brazen or too free. The ducking stool is a
wooden chair attached to a large lever system. The lever allows the chair to be raised or lowered
without the tipping of the chair, making it parallel to the ground at all times. The chair is then lowered
into the water, dunking the loose tongued woman under the water. Based on the level of the offense
and the cruelty of the deciding party the woman could be quot;ducked quot; any number of times, and
in some cases of extreme measures, the woman could drown from the time spent under water. Some of
the ducking stools were mobile and could be taken to the water s edge at the necessary time, while
others were fixed into place along the coast of the water as a grim reminder to the women of the town
of what free speaking could lead to.
One tool that is used as punishment was the amputation saw. Much more cruel than the axe, the saw is
slower and more painful than the relative quickness of the axe blade.
Villagers can be considered twisted individuals because of the crowds of people that gathered for the
public punishments and executions. People relished the public hangings, and the persons to be hanged
were often falsely accused of treason, which called

National Security Requires a Clear Acknowledgement of the...
Introduction
To succeed, we must face the world as it is (Obama, 2010, p.1). Globalization has resulted in
interconnecting the world in such a manner that was unimaginable even two decades ago. No longer
can any state, nation, or people expect to remain an island. Indeed, as we are interconnected, so too are
our fates. If the United States is to ensure security and prosperity for her citizens now and for future
generations, we must clearly acknowledge that part we play in the continuum of shifting word powers
and peace. We must recognize that although we are the world s leading power, we are not the sole
possessor and arbiter of influence.
The nuclear arms race of the Cold War years has given way to a race for building alliances in this age
of globalization. If we are to be successful in our pursuit of a more peaceful and sustainable world
order, we must be cognizant of the opportunities to help fledgeling democracies take root. As well, we
must be aware of the more nefarious motives of nations for whom state intervention is merely a thin
veil for imperialistic ambitions. With this, we consider the recent events in Ukraine and its impact on
our national security.

Ukulele Research Paper
The Ukulele
The ukulele is a member of the lute family of instruments; meaning that the strings run in a plane
parallel to the sound table. Most people believe that the ukulele originated in Hawaii however, they
actually had their first start in Portugal in 139 B. C in the Lusitania tribe. By the thirteenth century,
four string instruments were being used in Spain, when six string instruments were introduced in the
1700s the popularity of chordophones exploded. (A chordophone is a musical instrument that makes
sound by way of a vibrating string or strings stretched between two points.) Although we all picture

Manuel Nunes also suggested a different tuning pattern to make chord formation easier. The body of
the ukulele is usually made from wood. The type of wood has a significant impact on the sound, tone,
and quality. Mahogany is thought to be the finest wood for making ukuleles. It also has excellent
aging properties, sounding better as it gets older. Typically, the same type of wood is used for the
entire instrument. The ukulele is a small instrument that looks like a miniature version of a guitar. It
consists of a short neck, the main body, four strings and tuning keys, a bridge, a fretboard, and a sound
hole. There are a variety of different types of ukuleles including the soprano, concert, tenor, and
baritone. The soprano is the smallest (20 inches) and the baritone is the largest (30 inches). The strings
are tuned to the notes G C E A on all ukuleles except the Baritone. Tuning for the Baritone is D G B E

Tyto Alba s Diet Analysis
Discussion:
After 24 (1992 2016) years 2,176 pellets were analysed by the students at the County College of
Morris. Additionally, on average each pellet contained 2.6 prey equating to an average of 963 prey
discovered in owl pellets per year (Table 1). After the analysis of the pellets it was discovered that the
Tyto alba consumed a wide spectrum prey, primarily rodents. A total of six prey species were
discovered. The Microtus commonly known as voles were the most abundant prey in the Tyto alba s
diet. Three thousand six hundred and twenty three remains of the Microtus were identified in pellets
that were analysed with a relative abundance of 64.2%. Microtus is most abundant in temperate and
tropical regions, a common habitat for the Tyto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there were factors that had a negative impact on the study such as the misidentification of
prey. The remains of the consumed prey were small and very fragile which made them prone to
breakage. Additionally, before the pellets were transported to the County College of Morris for
analysis, they were stored and preserved in a lab at the Carolina Biological Supply Company. This
made it difficult to figure out if the prey composite was the Tyto alba s year round diet or if the
dominant species that were consumed depended on the season. In the future the time between when
the owl pellets are gathered to when they are analyzed should be reduce to give a more accurate data

Phobia Is An Irrational Fear
Phobia is a Greek word originated from Phobos which means fear. A phobia is an irrational fear of a
specific object, activity or situation that results in a compelling desire to avid the dreaded object,
activity or situation (1). Fear is sometimes a normal entity for example fear of sudden sight at snake or
wild animal etc. However the fear in case of phobia is quite irrational. Even the person who is
suffering from phobia of any kind understands that their phobia is rational, but still they are not able to
control their irrational fear at the sight of the object of their fear. Many phobias are developed by
peoples during their childhood, however certain individuals develop different sort of phobias during
their adult stage.
Phobias of every kind almost limit the productive life of an individual life upto a great extent. Even
just imagining in their mind the object of fear arose an anxiety in them. However when they are
actually exposed to the object of fear, the excessive fear and terror is automatic and overwhelming.
The phobias are prevalent in the general population. The prevalence of different phobias varies from
population to population or from country to country, which may be based upon various environmental
factors.
Phobia types
The types of phobia are generally; social phobia or social anxiety disorder, specific phobia and
agoraphobia. Some phobias are more prevalent as compared to others. The persons having social
anxiety disorder generally fear from being at the

King Solomon Chapter 1
The first sixteen chapters of 2 Chronicles open with the feats of King Solomon, the figure who
dominates the first nine chapters of the reading. The narrative starts off with Solomon already firmly
established, not accounting the struggle it took him to get to this position of favor. This favor is
consummated in chapter 1 when the Lord accepts Solomon s offerings and grants his request for
wisdom. This wisdom results in even more favor as chapter one ends by summarizing the material
wealth the kingdom accumulates. The second chapter immediately dives into Solomon s preparations
to build the Temple by accounting how many people were involved in the work and how a treaty was
formed with the king of Tyre for assistance. Chapter Three describes ... Show more content on

Chapter ten begins with the revolt of Rehoboam s reign. Israel rebels against the house of David when
Rehoboam chooses to disregard the elders who had served Solomon and instead enforces a stricter
rule on the people. Although the split between Israel and Judah is not explicitly made official, chapter
11 foreshadows the split as it profiles the emergence of a rival leader in the form of Jeroboam. The
chapter talks about how Rehoboam gains power through building up his family and building up cities
in preparation for fighting against the rest of Israel. Rehoboam abandons the law of the Lord and is
attacked by the king of Egypt. God had originally intended to use Egypt to completely destroy Israel,
but since the people humbled themselves, Egypt took the treasures in the Temple and subjected the
people to servanthood. Rehoboam continued to reign and faced continual warfare with Jeroboam, the
king of Israel. Chapter 13 talks about how his son Abijah succeeded him as the king of Judah. Abijah
inherited the animosity with Jeroboam as chapter 13 narrates a fierce battle in which Abijah wins
because Judah cried out to the Lord. Judah saw a time of good fortune as the son who succeeded
Abijah, Asa, did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. After ten years of peace and prosperity, Asa s
army defeated Cushite forces in a feat that was clearly the work of the Lord. In Chapter 15 the Lord
spoke to Asa through Azariah to encourage him to keep seeking the Lord, so Asa initiated a series of
major reforms to reduce the pagan cultures in Judah. However, in chapter 16 Asa makes an alliance
with the king of Aram to retaliate against Baasha king of Israel. God was angered that Asa did not
look to the Lord for help first. Asa was angered at this messenger, so he sent the messenger to prison
and brutally oppressed some of the people. Asa stopped seeking the Lord and was punished with a

Covert Action
A Necessary Evil?
The term Covert Action brings with it a connotation of shadowy figures wrapped in secrecy and
intrigue. It also brings with it a substantial amount of moral questions as to what is right. The use of
covert action has been widely publicized since the early seventies, but trying to find out the truth to
these events has been difficult to say the least. What is even more difficult, is historically recording
these events into categories of successes or failures. These operations are difficult to dissect because
of their secrecy and although events have been recorded, some facts simply aren t apparent. This paper
will seek to identify the complex issues associated with covert operations. United ... Show more

The start of the coup would begin through a series of events highlighting Mossadegh negatively. The
first part of this would be to paint Mossadegh and his government as anti religious due to the ties
between him and the Tudeh (and the Soviet Union).(7) The second part of this would be to instill a
fear that Mossadegh was leading the country into economic collapse. This would be publicized
through the use illegally issued paper money (printed by the CIA).(8) These two factors would cause
widespread civil unrest with the people of Iran in which the Shah would remove Mossadegh from
office and replace him with Zahedi. The key to the success of the operation was support from the Shah
which in part seemed difficult at times because of his indecisiveness. On the morning of 19 August
1953, the coup began and by 5:25pm Zahedi had ascended into power courtesy of the SIS and CIA.
Iran: Aftermath The Shah would remain in power until 1979. A series of events sparking from that day
in August 1953 would finally boil over and force him to flee the country. The Shah was viewed as a
puppet leader of the western world and forced into exile.(9) There are many factors that relate to the
cause of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and many of them involve the Shah and his government. Was
the operation viewed as a success? At the time, yes. But looking at the events which unfolded over the
period of 1953 1979

Golfer with Brachial Neuritis Misdiagnosed Essay
During Dr. Wallace s clinic, one of the golf girls came into the Athletic Training Room complaining of
right shoulder pain. Dr.Wallace first began the evaluation by asking if she remembered how she hurt
her shoulder. The golfer said she had been at home during winter break and was wearing socks in the
house. She said she was running and fell and when she was falling, she attempted to catch herself by
using a nearby wall. Dr. Wallace then checked her strength by asking her to abduct her shoulders as far
as she could. He then added resistance and noticed weakness in her right shoulder. He tested the
ligaments and told her they were all intact. He also asked her if she had been experiencing any
numbness, tingling, etc. since she fell and she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She still had some loss in her sensory neurons, but they showed some slight improvement from the
initial evaluation. A follow up MRI also showed a ...decrease in the brachial plexus thickening and
hyperintensity. (Gazioglu) The patient in this case study experienced rare symptoms. Patients who are
usually diagnosed with brachial neuritis have severe pain in the shoulder and some even have
localized pain. Only a small number of patients have pain that subsides to the fingers of the affected
side. This case study supports the signs and symptoms along with the treatment that our team doctor
prescribed. When I asked him about the situation, he said that he asked her if she had the flu recently
because sometimes the brachial plexus can give off flu like symptoms such as a fever, fatigue, cough,
and runny nose. He said this condition is called brachial neuritis. He said the majority of the time it
affects one side of the shoulder and that s why he asked the golfer is she had any of the symptoms or
the flu during the break. He said that the muscles become weak and in some cases, paralyzed. For
treatment, Dr. Wallace said he prescribes pain relievers so it won t bother the patient as much. He said
in severe cases, the patient will undergo surgery and then see a physical therapist to help regain
strength in the shoulder. When I asked if he thought the golfer had had brachial neuritis he said most
likely no since

When Christopher Marlowe, the most famous playwright in his time (Lace, 79), died, William Shakespeare was his successor. Shakespeare decided drama was to be his career after seeing the Queen s Players during a visit to his hometown of Stratford on Avon in 1587 (Lace, 79). By the time of Marlowe s death, Shakespeare was already well known for his three part Henry VI in 1592 (Lace, 79). His plays Love s Labour s Lost and Romeo and Juliet , both in 1594, were performed and he became the most outstanding playwright of his time (Lace, 79). Before Elizabeth s reign was over, Richard II , Julius Caesar , Henry V , and Hamlet had been performed (Lace, 79). James Burbage was the second most influential actor of the Elizabethan period, but not only for his acting talent. Burbage built the first ever public playhouse in England, opening in 1576 (Unknown, 218). Burbage financed the building of The Theater alone, a well off man but was still considered a rogue. Actors were not the only influence on theater. When Mary Tudor decided the throne was rightfully hers, the War of the Roses ensued (Lace, 73). Because of the War of the Roses, many nobles, that employed actors, were killed (Lace, 73). This forced actors to form their own troupes (Lace, 73). In 1572, parliament passed the Poor Laws, making it a criminal offense to be a vagabond (Lace, 75). This reduced the number of acting companies and required them to be ... • 4. Glass Menagerie Disadvantages The Glass Menagerie Essays Prompt One The characters in The Glass Menagerie are theorized to be based off of people in Tennessee Williams s life. The Wingfield family are supposedly similar to Tennessee s own kin. With that, all of the characters in the play have their strong points and weaknesses in their personalities. Tom, the son in the Wingfield family, works in a warehouse. He dreams of adventure and longs for some sense of purpose beyond the town that he lives in. Although he takes care of his family s financial stability, he clashes with them constantly. Tom and his mother, Amanda, argue very often, for example when he gets irritated by her interrupting his writing. Tom rants, Look, Mother I haven t got a thing, not a single thing left in this house that I can call my own, (1.3). Tom lets all of his anger out at once, building it up until the moment he snaps. Instead of settling his problems in his life at home assertively, he claims to go to the movies, only coming back after hours of being away. However, this is classified as a positive trait. It s better for him to calm down and settle the issues later on, when he won t risk saying something impulsive or upsetting. When he gets home after his trips to the movies one night, he speaks to his mother after she claims she will not speak to him again, I m sorry, Mother. I m sorry for all those things I said. I didn t mean it. I apologize, (1.5). Another positive trait about Tom is his gentleness towards Laura. When he converses with her, his guard is let down and speaks to her kindly. Even though he tries to appear bleak on the outside, once he opens up he shows his softer, more careful side. Amanda, the mother of Laura and Tom, can be very absent minded and in her own world of expectations. She refers back to her time as a young woman and focuses on getting a gentleman caller for Laura; she s even more interested in having the gentleman caller for herself rather than Laura. Amanda struggles with giving her children what they want, refusing to accept the fact that Tom wants to leave and adventure out into the world. Because of this, she causes a lot of family conflict, stating later on in the play, My devotion has made me a witch and so I make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Three Pointer Shot Percentage Of Mba Essay My aim in doing this project with the set of data I have is to find out if the amount of games a person plays in the NBA effects there three pointer shot percentage. NBA stands for National Basketball Association. A three pointer applies to a game called basketball. You shoot a three pointer when you are behind the arc on one side of the court. The answer to this question may seem simple but it really isn t. For example, in the NBA there has been a number of people that played 20 games but has a better three pointer shot percentage than someone that had played 50 games in the NBA. Even though someone plays more games in the NBA, it does not mean that their shooting average would be better than someone who has not played as much games as they did. Study Habits By Gender At The Library Kendall Nelson ATH 175 Dr. Peterson November 20, 2015 Ethnographic Paper: Differences in Study Habits by Gender at King Library A library, by definition, is a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may be read or borrowed (Merriam Webster). However, for students at Miami University, the word library may have different connotations. After asking several fellow students the first word that comes to mind when someone talks about the library, the responses I received varied from the expected books , study , and focus , to more personal emotions such as sad and depressed . King Library, named for longtime library director and benefactor Edgar Weld King, has been the largest library and main scholarly hub at Miami University since 1966. Open 24 hours a day, you are bound to see students studying, socializing, or even sleeping at any given hour of the day in King. Comprised of four floors, including the basement, students are expected to meet the noise level expectations of each floor; students should anticipate a more relaxed and loud experience in the basement whereas the third floor maintains a level of almost absolute silence. For the past several weeks, I have been observing students and their studying habits in the basement and café area of King Library. Even though this gives Comcast Business a framework for the launch of the Smart Office product, there are still risks to take into account before the launch of this new project. Anticipated/possible risks include: 1. Potential Bottleneck due to lead time with Camera Orders a. This is the first time Comcast Business has worked with Axis, our video camera supplier. To stay lean Comcast will be ordering only what is needed for pending orders. If demand is high, customers may have to endure long wait times for installation because of camera inventory at the local Comcast warehouse/Technician dispatch center. 2. Inability to measure demand in new markets a. Comcast has only trialed this product in select Northeastern US states. Demand is currently unknown in other regions. Competition is low, but this does not necessarily present and opportunity for high demand. 3. Potentially being forced to use 3rd Party install technicians a. For standard internet or phone installations, Comcast will sometimes utilize contractors to complete the work. This is usually when order volume is high, as we do not have enough technicians to complete all orders in a timely manner. We have received customer feedback that the contractors are not as knowledgeable as internal staff, and do not provide the same high quality work. Beautiful Music of the Middle Ages Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul, it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us Martin Luther. Music was a part of life then and it is a part of life today. Without music, life itself would be a mistake. Seeing the changes over the years is a great way to follow the patterns and differences this way of communicating has shown us. Some of the more popular music was the Gregorian Chant, Organum, Motet and Madrigal. In the early Middle Ages around 590 ACE the Gregorian Chant was popularized by Pope Gregory the Fourth. The Gregorian Chant was a form of monophonic tune of the Roman Catholic Church (Music Through the Ages). Monophonic is a musical style employing a single melodic line without accompaniment. This style was oral by tradition and only served as a memory aid for a singer who already knew the melody (http://en.wikipedia.org). Memorizing is a difficult task, it is even harder to memorize music that was taught to them orally. Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using neumes, an early form of musical notation (http://www.britannica.com). These neumes later formed the modern four and five line staff development. Being a monophonic tune the Gregorian Chant was losing interest and a new style was born. In the Musica Enchiriadis musical handbook , Organum consisted of two melodic lines moving simultaneously note against note. Organum changed the way of music for the medieval people; ... But, perhaps the general was a devil (pg.32). The night and a wounded snake are compared by using a simile, because a wounded snake moves slow and the night is moving slow for Rainsford. Rainsford feels like the night is so long, because he cannot fall asleep and all he can do is worry about his life. • 30. The Centralization And Development Of Urbanization In Africa Africa is a rapidly urbanizing continent, experiencing tremendous growth and transformation with an increasing concentration of cities. Today, it boasts a greater number of urban dwellers than Europe, Australia, North or South America. However, situations were not always so promising. The arrival of imperialism and the start of colonial rule in the 19th century served to exploit the growth of physical, economic, and human resources of a flourishing Africa to benefit European powers. By setting severe economic and social restrictions on things such as trade and education, the Europeans developed a colonized state which arrested all other natural development of the African system. Nonetheless, during the approximately five and half decades after independence, citizens began to slowly migrate to city hubs around the continent as various countries like Ethiopia and Tanzania developed socially and politically. This movement from rural to urban, a typical mobility characteristic of Africa, resulted in an expansion of leadership, institutions, and technical domains such design and finance. Urbanization has thus played a significant role in the development of factors including gender, inequality, and economic growth, as well as downturn. However, it has presented both opportunities and challenges which, in turn, have impacted the state of cities in modern day Africa. Since 1960, African cities have been growing fast, more so than the population. A direct result of this rapid urbanization has been the growth of opportunities for people seeking a better, comfortable life with their transition out of rural settings. For decades, this increased centralization has brought various cultures, perspectives, and talents together in an effort to place Africa on the global, economic scale. However, a drastic consequence of the growth of cities has been an increased inequality amongst its members, both economically and in terms of the standard of living. Income inequality creates a significant discrepancy between the rich and the poor. Whereas large manufacturers enjoy wealth through their involvement in an export oriented economy, laborers work through grueling hours in tiring conditions to earn minimum wage which can barely ... Berlin Crisis Research Paper The Berlin crisis started in February 1948 when the Western allies held the London conference to discuss how to jumpstart the German economy after two years of disagreeing with the Soviets. The Western allies wanted to implement a free market economy which all of their nations had and felt was the best option while the Soviet Union wanted to convert Germany to a planned communist economy. Because the London conference went against the regulations as laid out during the Potsdam Agreement, the Soviet Union s protest was quick and they withdrew from the Allied Control Council (ACC). In June of 1948, the Western allies introduced a new currency to the American, British, and French zones called the Deutsche mark without consulting the Soviets. This is considered the last straw, and the Soviet Union announces their plans to introduce a new currency in their zone and subsequently block off Berlin before the Western allies can implement their currency. However, the west had already smuggled in around 250 million Deutsche marks to West Berlin without the Soviet Union finding out. One more odd punishment worth mentioning is the ducking stool. Like the brank, it was a punishment for women whose speech was considered too brash and brazen or too free. The lever allows the chair to be raised or lowered without the tipping of the chair, making it parallel to the ground at all times. The chair is then lowered into the water, dunking the loose tongued woman under the water. Based on the level of the offense and the cruelty of the deciding party the woman could be quot;ducked quot; any number of times, and in some cases of extreme measures, the woman could drown from the time spent under water. Some of the ducking stools were mobile and could be taken to the water s edge at the necessary time, while others were fixed into place along the coast of the water as a grim reminder to the women of the town of what free speaking could lead to. • 40. National Security Requires a Clear Acknowledgement of the... Introduction To succeed, we must face the world as it is (Obama, 2010, p.1). Globalization has resulted in interconnecting the world in such a manner that was unimaginable even two decades ago. No longer can any state, nation, or people expect to remain an island. Indeed, as we are interconnected, so too are our fates. If the United States is to ensure security and prosperity for her citizens now and for future generations, we must clearly acknowledge that part we play in the continuum of shifting word powers and peace. We must recognize that although we are the world s leading power, we are not the sole possessor and arbiter of influence. The nuclear arms race of the Cold War years has given way to a race for building alliances in this age of globalization. If we are to be successful in our pursuit of a more peaceful and sustainable world order, we must be cognizant of the opportunities to help fledgeling democracies take root. As well, we must be aware of the more nefarious motives of nations for whom state intervention is merely a thin veil for imperialistic ambitions. With this, we consider the recent events in Ukraine and its impact on our national security.
