Absolute Concentration Lab Report
The magnitude of a star is simply how bright the star is. The brightest stars were of first magnitude,
however, the dullest were of sixth magnitude. The simple scale of magnitude was made popular by
Ptolemy, but is thought to have started with Hipparchus. The scale is sometimes considered confusing
since the brighter the star is, the smaller the magnitude it has.
In 1856, Norman Robert Pogson determined the system of magnitude by specifying a first magnitude
star as a star that is 100 times as bright as a sixth magnitude star, in that coming up with the
logarithmic scale that we use today. It is important to note that the scale is logarithmic: the relative
brightness of two objects is determined by the difference of their magnitudes (Wiki). The magnitude
scale we use today is logarithmic, which means that for each unit stars go up the scale, they get
dimmer by a factor of 2.512. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the brightest stars are considered to be of first magnitude, this equation calculates the
magnitude. To calculate the absolute magnitude when the apparent magnitude and distance are known
the formula is M=m 5log(d/10), M being the absolute magnitude, m being the apparent magnitude,
and d being the distance.
Absolute magnitude is how bright a star appears from 10 pc, or 33 light years, expressed as M . (Star
Magnitude). Apparent magnitude m of a star is a number that tells how bright that star appears at its
great distance from Earth (Apparent and absolute). The apparent brightness of a star depends of two
components: the natural brightness of the star and the distance. Apparent magnitude is a bad index of
how bright a star actually is. The apparent magnitude of a star has an equal apparent

The Effects Of Acid Rain On Plants
Abstract
Acid rain is a current issue due to the potential danger it could pose to plant life in the case that it is
harmful to plants. In this lab, it was determined whether or not acid water was harmful to red radish
plants, and in doing so, established the possible effects of acid rain on plants. It was hypothesized that
the acid would take all nutrients from the soil, therefore harming the plants. In this lab, three plants
two experimentals and one control were monitored after receiving either acid water or tap water. After
the experiment was conducted, it was plain to see that the plants were affected negatively by the acid
water, as the plants to receive the acid water immediately showed symptoms of nutrient deficiencies,
therefore proving the hypothesis. As such, acid rain was proved to be a danger to the environment, as
it destroys nutrients in the soil, therefore killing the plants. Without efforts to minimize acid rain, it
could potentially destroy the ecosystem.
Introduction
The purpose of this lab is to determine whether or not acidic water affects the growth of red radish
plants. Vinegar with a similar acidic pH as acid rain was used to water plants to simulate the effects of
acid rain which is a current problem.. The pH used was 3.5. In comparison, the tap water was a pH of
7, a neutral liquid. By simulating acid rain and observing how the vinegar affects the plant, it will be
possible to come to a conclusion about how acid rain may affect crops.

Pros And Cons Of They Say I Say
Chapter 13 of They Say/I Say addresses different points of views on how technology affects how
people learn in society. The author gives us arguments and counterarguments that allow us to
determine how technology affects our own thought processes. The author states how some people feel
that the internet stretches our minds and bring people together however, some believe that it destroys
our ability to think, communicate, and interact with others (167). By adding these opinions in, the
author gives us a chance to evaluate our own methods of learning and whether or not we fit into the
categories mentioned. The author then goes into detail about the pros and cons of technology in
connection with the thought process. He includes

The Paternalistic Doctor Patient Relationship
It is difficult to imagine a time when exploitation of patients was a normal practice. It is worse that
such a time was not all that long ago. While reading the story of Henrietta Lacks, I consistently had to
remind myself that times were different. Doctors did not necessarily intend to harm their patients in
any way, however it is impossible not to feel pity for Henrietta, her family, and any others who were
mistreated simply due to the ignorance of the times. One of the noticeable recurrent themes of this
story was the paternalistic doctor patient relationship. There were multiple occasions in which Day
mentioned how he simply trusted the doctors to do what was right. He and Henrietta assumed doctors
understood their patients needs better than the patients themselves, and therefore never asked
questions. My understanding is that this was a common mentality at the time. I imagine this mentality
was especially prominent among less fortunate classes of people who did not have the means to
understand what their doctors were telling them. In cases in which harm befell patients, the doctor
patient relationship was likely a primary culprit. Doctors had a paternalistic attitude, and therefore did
not excel at communicating with their patients, specifically at a level that was appropriate to the given
situation. Adding to the problem, patients did not ask questions, simply because they did not know
they had the option to do so. The opportunity to observe a classic

Prosthetic Hip Dislocation And Its Effects
Prosthetic Hip Dislocation
A prosthetic hip dislocation means that your artificial hip joint (prosthesis) has moved out of place.
This can happen because of a hard, direct hit or injury (trauma) to the hip, such as a fall. A prosthetic
hip joint may be more likely to dislocate than a normal hip joint because a prosthetic hip joint does not
have all the structures that normally hold the joint in place.
After the prosthetic hip is moved back into place, you will generally recover fully. Prosthetic hip
dislocation is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
CAUSES
This condition is often caused by trauma to the hip. Trauma may be caused by:
Falls, especially falls from a height.
Motor vehicle accidents.
Contact sports.
Industrial accidents.
RISK FACTORS
This condition is more likely to develop in:
People over 60 years of age.
People with bone loss (osteoporosis).
People who lack vitamin D.
People who are overweight or obese.
People who lack hip strength and flexibility.
People with poor vision.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of this condition include:
Severe pain in the hip area. Pain may get worse when you move or try to put weight on the hip.
Inability to move the hip.
The leg on the side of the dislocated hip appearing shorter than the other leg.
The foot on the side of the dislocated hip turning inward.
Loss of feeling in your lower leg, foot, or ankle.
DIAGNOSIS
This condition is diagnosed based on

Essay on The Clouds and the History of Peloponnesian War
Breaking down traditions: The Clouds and the History of Peloponnesian War Undeniably, the ancient
Greek society places a heavy emphasis on values and traditions. The two texts of the Clouds by
Aristophanes and History of the Peloponnesian war by Thucydides, although contextually divergent,
are actually conceptually convergent. Both texts are built around the central theme of the collapse of
conventional values. While the breakdown of traditional values in the History of the Peloponnesian
war is presented in a more metaphorical and symbolical manner, the downfall of conventional values
in the Clouds is on a more direct basis. Although both texts essentially convey across the same solemn
message that the relinquishment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Making use of rhetoric devices and compromising the ideals of democracy breach the ideals of
traditions in the Greek society. Unlike that in the Clouds , Thucydides does not show any sign of flaws
of the traditional values. Although based on different circumstances, the breakdown of traditional
values in The History of the Peloponnesian war parallels to that in the Clouds . The Clouds also
utilizes extensive use of rhetoric devices. Strepsiades decides to submit to the sophist s way of
education, so that he would be able to defend himself against his creditors. The first sign of erosion of
traditional value is exposed when Strepsiades decides to enroll himself in the Thinkery under the
guidance of Socrates. The ability to manipulate language and turn everything into relativism erodes
the principles of traditional Athenian beliefs. Indisputably, the new philosophy wins. Sophistry is the
type of linguistic device that, in the face of the weakness of traditional beliefs, undermines the value
of anything. Strepsiades opines, Holy Earth, what a voice! How divine, how awesome, how fantastic!
(363) In which Socrates responds, Yes, you know, these are the only real divinities, all the rest is
bunkum. (365) In the new system of beliefs as advocated by the sophists, there is a rejection of the
traditional religion and a belief in the new gods . The comical way through which ideas are portrayed
may be witty, but the core issue lies at the heart of the play s

Burn rate study on Alliant (Green dot) smokeless shotgun powder and KClO4 Shalom AJ Cohen
Philadelphia community college 11/2010 Abstract: The purpose of this project is to measure if
differing amounts of potassium perchlorate, KCIO4, mixed with shotgun powder has an effect on burn
rate. The experiment was videotaped and the duration of burn time for each amount used was
recorded. KClO4, amounts ranging from .2g to 2g, were added to 4g of shotgun powder. A steel pipe
that is ½ inch wide and 6 inch, which is welded vertically to a steel plate base was used for
confinement. Ignition occurred from the top down. The hypothesis that was accepted is that the
concentration of KClO4 will accelerate the burn rate of smokeless flake powder. ... Show more

The burn rate of the mixture was recorded with a video camera and the results recorded and timed.
The resulting footage was reviewed and the duration of the combustion noted on a tenth of a second
basis. 4 grams of Alliant Green Dot double base smokeless flake powder with no KClO4 added was
also recorded twice in the same manner, to give a baseline burn time and averaged. Raw Data Gun

4 g of Alliant, Green Dot double base smokeless powder with no KClO4 was 1.94 seconds. The burn
rate with KClO4 ranged from 1.23 to 2. 76 seconds. 4 out of 7 tests provided results where the burning
rate of the mixture were accelerated when KClO4 where added to the shotgun powder. Two tests
showed a slight decline in the burn rate. The final test using 1g showed a decline in burn rate by 0.82
seconds. The declines might have been caused by residual shotgun powder from a previous test. It

The Technology Development Of Autonomous Cars
ABSTRACT
Autonomous Vehicles are already being developed by the majority of the automobile companies as
Audi, GM, Toyota among others, however, the approach on the technology development to achieve
the autonomy is not the same for all of them. Some companies want so they invest a lot in artificial
intelligence and software development. On the other side companies such as Toyota have the objective
to improve the safety features on their cars, doing for that a lot of research on sensors and ECU
(Electronic Control Units). In this project was researched 7 major companies that are currently
investing in autonomous cars, being Google the only one that is new on the automobile industry but,
accordingly to researches carried out by the group, the most advanced on this new type of technology,
showing expressive results in their monthly reports
INTRODUCTION
Autonomous cars are going to be a reality on people s routines in a near future when the first units
starts to being sold, however the unmanned technology is far from being a recent discovery.
Researches have been conducted on the past 90 years when the American army started to assembly
flying bombs equipped with gyroscopes and barometers as components of a navigation system. Ever
since, the unmanned technology has evolved in a tremendous way, and after the first GPS satellite
launch in 1978, vehicles can rely on a navigation systems that is reliable and has coverage all over the
globe.

Lost Names: Scenes From A Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim is an autobiographical
fictionalization of the author s youth in Japanese occupied Manchuria. Though not a traditional
autobiography, the author tells his own story through the eyes of a nameless young man. The story
takes place between 1932 and 1945. The young man grows and changes from the start of the novel to
the end and meditates on the nature of war, family, duty and education among other things. However,
the most important aspect of the novel is the way in which it portrays the Japanese occupation and the
state of the main character s family as a result of it. The novel begins with the ... Show more content

The students even sing songs celebrating the 1937 rape of Nanking At the morning assembly, the
author notices that there are no Japanese children present: I discover later that they have their own
morning assembly in another field in the back of the school. It is obvious that we do not mix classes.
They have their own classes and classrooms, and we have ours, although we are all the same school. A
few years later, they will build a new school somewhere outside the town, exclusively for themselves.
On the main character s first day, he sings a European song that he learned from one of his school
friends back home in front of his new class. After the class, a Japanese teachers scolds and beats him
simply because the song was of a foreign nature. The boy is defended by his own teacher, a Korean.
This further stresses the ongoing fight against Japanese ethnocentrism that was so prevalent, even in
such places as the schoolroom. The Japanese and their rabid ethnocentrism have their effect on the
narrator s family. The family is generally happy and well structured. The narrator lives with his
mother, father, little sister and grandfather. As mentioned before, the narrator s family pressures him to
be better than the Japanese students. Upon returning home after being beaten, the men of the house
invite him to eat with them and drink wine. This is a strong scene that is filled with the proudness of a
parent for their son. Simply standing up to a

Gilead And Powerlessness
Most people feel powerless. They don t think they can affect larger events because they don t have
money or political power. This makes many people not even try, instead acting selfishly, looking after
themselves above the greater good. Offred is an exemplar of this phenomenon. She represents an
average person, who feels powerless, and largely acts in self interest. This makes her, and everybody
who thinks like her, complicit in Gilead s rise. Their feeling of powerlessness does not justify their
selfishness. Throughout the book Offered thinks she is powerless. When Gilead was forming, she
never went to any of the marches resisting its rise, ostensibly because she thought it wouldn t matter.

This is a very human response. She is values her comfort over everybody else s, and instinct that is
very strong in all of us. It is also an incredibly selfish instinct, and in this case, Offred falling victim to
it makes Gilead stronger. Emotions continue to be a strong force in driving Offred s selfishness,
specifically when Serena Joy gives her a photo of her daughter in return for seeing Nick. I can t let go
of this hope she says, referring to her hope that her daughter is somehow ok after everything that
happened (206). Of course she values this hope, any parent would. However, from a rational
perspective, it is a very selfish decision. That photo gives her hope, a feeling that makes her feel good.
It doesn t help her daugter of anybody else. The only way to do that would be to weaken Gilead,
which she could have done if she had instead demanded some information from Serena Joy that
Mayday could use. Most people would make the same choice as her, me included. Those emotions are
incredibly hard to resist. However, they still make us act selfishly, and in the process, make the world
a worse place. In many ways, Offred and everyone like her are why Gilead exists. They didn t resist
Gilead s rise, didn t band together, and looked out for themselves and their loved ones above the great
good. Atwood is telling use that regimes do not rise in back rooms or on the battlefield. They rise
when the average person doesn t stand up and selflessly fight

What Are The Causes Of The French Revolution
The French Revolution in the eighteenth century became a significant historical event ever since this
led to important changes within France. One such change which had a major impact was the
abolishment of the old monarchy, or the end of absolute power of the monarchical form of
government, present in France at that time. Revolutionary ideas also spread out of the country,
throughout Europe, and unto the rest of the world. But what are the causes of this? Many of the
problems in France lead to the revolution and the most general cause common to all revolutions can be
found in the social structure of one s society (French Revolution, n.d.). Before the revolution, France
was ruled by powerful kings who held the supreme authority. Their authority was believed to have
been derived from God himself. In the article The Royal Government (2015), it was according to the
political doctrine of the era that France was an absolutist, divine ... Show more content on

Rise Of Competitive Authoritarianism
The Rise of Competitive Authoritarianism: Main Features and Limits Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way
fashionably unveil the major features of this new political regime. As clearly explained by the authors,
Competitive Authoritarianism is a hybrid regime combining elements of Liberal Democracy and
Authoritarian rule, and, for this reason, many political philosophers like Fukuyama look upon it as a
transitional diminished democracy (Levitsky). However, political philosophers like Gat and Levitsky,
supported by other scholars including Roger Owen, argue that Competitive Authoritarian regimes are
promptly consolidating their political power in those country areas where Liberal Democracy is
weakening like in Ukraine and Turkey, or it failed in some African countries and the Middle East. In
sight of this speculative research, Competitive Authoritarianism is the current challenge to Liberal
Democracy, therefore it minimizes the chance of being considered a transitional political regime.
Although Fukuyama asserted that Competitive Authoritarian regimes naturally become either fully
democratic or completely authoritarian, Levitsky dares to say that making the ... Show more content

The Matrix And The Allegory Of The Cave
The Matrix and the Allegory of the Cave focus on one central idea: What is real?. They engage the
audience in a fictional world where people live in false realities without knowing it. They make us
question our own knowledge. Their storylines connect in that the protagonist discovers that everything
he knows is a big lie and now he must discover the truth. The protagonist is thrown all of the sudden
into the real world and then, he continues to seek the absolute truth. Neo and the prisoner inquire
whether knowing the truth is a blessing or a curse. The Matrix itself is very comparable to the cave
because both are prisons of false reality. Humans are trapped and manipulated by their
surroundings.Their senses are tricked and they can t recognize the truth. In the Allegory of the Cave,
people have been in this dwelling since childhood, shackled by the legs and neck. Thus they stay in
the same place so that there is only one thing for them to look that: whatever they encounter in front of
their faces. But because they are shackled, they are unable to turn their heads around. Just like the
prisoners, Neo is chained to a bunch of machines who blind him from the real world. In the film,
Morpheus says: Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, kept inside a prison that you cannot
smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind . Neither the prisoners or the people living in the Matrix

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Confucianism
For all the strengths of Confucian attitudes toward nature, there are also weaknesses that must be
recognized. As a governance system, Confucianism s emphasis on hierarchy has served the programs
of political elites, fostering a disconnect between rulers and the ruled. This pattern has contributed to
poor environmental management over time, despite Confucian philosophy emphasizing unity between
humans and the land (Elvin, 2004; Tuan, 1968). Even within a single tradition, Chinese environmental

China s Position On The United States
China is supplanting its primary economic opponents around the globe to a great extent without the
utilization of power. China s prosperity denotes the first instance of realm building in the time of
globalization. The United States played a key role in China s economic ascendance by advancing
globalization and grasping, lately, free market conventionality (Zhang, Duysters Filippov, 2012). In
the records of history, it will be noticed that it was the United States itself that championed another
economic structure which at last undermined its own particular position on the planet. China s choice
to open its economy to the world concurred with the U.S. drive for globalization. In addition, the
United States and the Western companies opened the financial conduits to China through direct
venture and subcontracting trade agreements. Notably, as the Western capitalism went global, China
turned into the factory of the world. China has turned into an undeniably critical part of the worldwide
trading framework in the course of recent decades; enthusiasm for the nation and its universal
financial strategies has expanded among global business analysts who are not China authorities
(Petras, 2012). This paper represents an endeavor to give a review of the business atmosphere toward
globalization in China with and a brief outline of the real strides in the advancement of Chinese

websites was an undoing to China s endeavor to ascent to a strong intellectual property country.
Amidst criticisms from the right holders in the international community, China has tightened its
regulations against copyright infringement on online video streaming websites. Another rationale
behind the government s commitment to fighting copyright piracy is to protect domestic TV stations
against the rampant popularity of foreign TV shows online. The Chinese government hopes that
through an enforcement of IPR, China s TV industry will see a reduce in the invasion of foreign TV
shows due to high licensing costs and thus an increase in the production of domestic popular ones.
Through a careful analysis of the legal framework and measures the Chinese government

Carolus Linnaeus s Influence On The Field Of Biology
The famous, Swedish science historian Sten Lindroth once said that God creates, Linnaeus orders ,
which is a perfect example of how ground breaking and respected Carolus Linnaeus works, ideas,
publishings and findings were at the time (Lindroth). Carolus Linnaeus, a.k.a. the father of taxonomy,
was a Swedish botanist who was the first to person to successfully set the frame for characterising and
naming organisms. Carolus Linnaeus impacted the field of biology in a positive way through his
classification of organisms sexually, publishing many important biological works, papers, and books,
and the creation of binomial nomenclature.
In the 18th century, Swedish Botanist Carolus Linnaeus arranged plants into orders of groups

The specific epithet names, also known as trivial names, were usually Latin adjectives that were
linked to diagnoses, description, information, and references ( Carolus Linnaeus ). One of the main
advantages of his system was that these names were linked to diagnoses, description, information, and
references, and allowed many similarities to be found between similar organisms. Another reason his
work was considered such a landmark work was that it was the first ever accurate nomenclatural
system and due to its descriptiveness, accuracy and shortness compared to earlier systems it won
widespread praise and acceptance (Mertz pg 169). This system would eventually be known as
Binomial Nomenclature and would official cement Carolus Linnaeus as one of the Greatest Botanist
Ever because it allowed scientists to identify plants and organisms more accurately ( Carolus Linnaeus
). It also allowed for greater advancement in biological naming and knowledge and allowed for
thousands of new and unidentified organisms to be named accurately and related to similar organisms
( Carolus Linnaeus ). His creation of binomial nomenclature had a positive effect on the field of
biology because it allowed for organisms to be grouped, and given a two part name, which was much
shorter than previous ones. Also, even though this system was shorter, it was still very descriptive,
accurate and allowed for a greater advancement in the biological naming and knowledge of

Alprazolam Xanax Research Paper
Alprazolam or Xanax is a medication, an anxiolytic (anti anxiety agent), a medium term
benzodiazepine derivative that is used to treat panic disorders, anxiety neuroses such as anxiety
disorder or social phobia. Alprazolam is close to triazolam by its chemical structure, differs from the
absence of the Cl atom at phenyl at position. Alprazolam has less pronounced hypnotic effect. It is
used mainly for short term withdrawal of feelings of anxiety and fear. The first compounds of the
triazolobenzodiazepine structure were synthesized at the end of the 1960s by a team of specialists
from the USA, but it was 10 years before the tranquilizers appeared in the triadolobenzodiazepine
group. Alprazolam (Xanax), which has been on sale since 1981, is ... Show more content on

lower doses compared to patients taking antidepressants, anxiolytics or alcohol. With endogenous
depression, alprazolam can be used in combination with antidepressants. With the use of alprazolam,
patients with depression have seen cases of hypomanic and manic development. Like other
benzodiazepines, alprazolam has the ability to induce drug dependence in long term admission in large
doses (more than 4 mg / day). With a sudden discontinuation of alprazolam, there may be comeback
syndromes, such as depression, irritability, insomnia, increased sweating, especially with prolonged
admission (more than 8 12 weeks). When patients develop such unusual reactions as increased
aggressiveness, acute excitations, feelings of fear, thoughts of suicide, hallucinations, increased
muscle cramps, difficult sleep, superficial sleep, treatment should be discontinued. During pregnancy
Xanax is very dangerous due to its toxic effect on the fetus and increases the risk of congenital

Human Systems Paper 2
April 16, 2015 Free Market or Government Intervention
In the 21st century, human and technologies are inseparable. In past decades, there has been an
astonishing amount of development in modern world s technology. Nanotechnology is one of them.
This technology is based on nano scale and it can be used in many different areas because of its small
sizes. (Metchis). However, there is a huge amount of uncertainties on the hazards of nanomaterial due
to lack of research in this field in real world applications. There is a lot of things that need to be study
on this technology. For this technology to be considered fully developed there is an immediate need
for a balance between a free and unregulated market with some involvement from the government
because both systems have its own strengths and weaknesses that will be discussed further.
Free market. This term has always been debated by economist for its pros and cons. In the free market,
the buyer and the seller has freedom in doing their businesses. There will be no rule or any sort of
regulations that been set by any authoritative body to intervene with their businesses. This type of
situation is needed in the technology development business. Companies and firms can spread their
wings and expand their research and development (R D) department without government intervention
that could disturb their growth. Government organizations have always been associated with biased

Does the Ontological Argument successfully show that God exists?
God a being of which nothing greater can be conceived. (Blackburn, S, 1999. Think. New York United
States of America, Oxford University Press Inc. 5:154)
The ontological argument put forward by St Anselm, is based on this definition. The argument,
Anselm s premises, the concept of god being understood, god existing in the understanding and god
necessarily existing in reality, plus conclusion that god in fact exists, can be easily digested and
understood but are also very confusing. In this essay I will argue that the ontological argument does
not successfully prove that god exists as the argument not only contradicts itself but fails to put
forward any solid proof for god s existence. The essay topic above raises two main areas of attention
in need of address. These two areas being; the ontological argument and what it is, and secondly,
whether or not this argument is successful in arriving at the conclusion of god s existence. To do the
latter, I must first state the argument and what it is.
The Ontological Argument states, following the definition of God above, that the concept of God or, a
god, is understood (even by the fool as stated by Anselm) (Blackburn, 1999:154). Therefore as the
concept of God is understood God therefore exists in the understanding (taken as the

Suzy And Leah By Jane Yolen Analysis
Suzy and Leah Suzy and Leah, a diary entry series by Jane Yolen, was about two different girls, one of
whom lived in a refugee camp in the United States. These girls did not know or understand each other
in the beginning, but they eventually became friends. Leah was a German born Jew who had fled
Germany in 1944. She had come to the refugee camp and quickly realized that it was in lack of food
and clothing, much of which was donated by the people of the city. Many pedestrians walked by the
camp s fences and held food over the top. All of the children came running to the fence in hopes that
they could retrieve the food. Leah never participated because she thought that it made all of them look

Restorative Justice Principles
Restorative justice is based on the principle that criminal behavior injures not only the victim but also
the community and the offender, and any effort to resolve these problems caused by criminal behavior
should involve all of these parties. Common restorative justice initiatives are victim offender
mediation, circle sentencing, community holistic healing programs, and family group conferences. A
key to all these responses to criminal behavior is to address not only the offender, but all parties
involved including the victim and their families, offender s family, community citizens, and even the
police officers themselves.
There are four core principles of restorative justice. Firstly the crime must violate people and
relationships. Restorative justice does not only view crimes as law breaking, rather the justice views it
as damaging to people, their properties, relationships, and communities. Secondly, justice aims to
identify needs and obligations so that things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Offenders may be sent for a period of incarceration, but other sanctions are available. These include
house arrest, banishment, and community service. Circle sentencing has the potential to reacquaint

awareness and respect, coordinate use of government resources, use and create healing resources,

The Causal Effects Of Oil On Regional Conflict
Introduction
Oil, although a natural resource should be seen as a harmless, plentiful substance, in the modern world
it is now considered a symbol of wealth; which in my view is representative of political and economic
power. Countries that have oil reserves, or who can exploit oil ownership are often seen and
acknowledged of the most powerful nations in the world. China, Russia, and the United States of
America all have vast reserves of oil and are widely considered to be the top three Super Powers as
they are categorized as being .
I consider oil to be a primary cause of conflicts globally, for example the hostilities in the Niger Delta.
It is a common thought that oil and conflict go hand in hand wherever found. The purpose of this ...

Their leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo Asari, wanted greater control of the natural resources within the
Delta, and to have a national conference to renegotiate Nigeria s federal constitution. Many activists
have wanted these negotiations to be held for years, but Asari is willing to use force to get these talks,
and that is where he varies from many of these other political activists. Asari has links to organised
crime within the region. The protests in this region have been described as being akin to American
gangland fighting for the control of drug trade . [4]
These attacks on the oil companies are serious enough for the government to reward the violence by
holding discussions with these warlords. The reason for this is that the country is a petro state. This
means that the country s economy relies heavily on oil revenue, about 50 per cent of the GDP, 95 per
cent foreign exchange earnings and 80 per cent of its budgetary revenues. This came about after the
civil war, beforehand Nigeria was a relatively small producer of oil, but after it became a global
producer of oil, 5th biggest producer in the group OPEC. Because of this civil war, oil companies such
a Shell have had to form close partnerships with the Nigerian government, and indeed military
dictatorships in order to exploit the abundance of oil in the country. Very little money from the oil
production has gone into the communities where the oil is

Cotton swabs were wet with distilled water and then the swabbed ws wied on a 2 inch space of the

The Mission Journey
In 1986, the film The Mission was released. The Mission focuses on the journey of Jesuit Priest,
Father Gabriel, as he enters South America. Father Gabriel traveled to the Guarani lands to convert the
natives to Christianity. The title of the movie comes into play with the Priest joining Rodrigo
Mendoza, who was a reformed slave trader, on a mission in South America. A treaty is formed
between the Spanish and Portuguese that gave the Spanish territory to be ruled under Portuguese
jurisdiction. Father Gabriel and Mendoza take it upon themselves to defend the priest s mission.
Starting in the eighteenth century, the Jesuits began to fall under attack. These attacks occurred
because other nations believed the Jesuits had gained too much power. It was believed that the Jesuits
gained power from counseling during confessional, since they were confessors to some of the most
powerful nations in Europe. As the Enlightenment occurred, it came to show that religion and the
Church were not helping the progress of the economy. Because Spain and Portugal were in a political
decline, the one goal was to get rid of the Jesuits. With the disagreements between Spain and ... Show

portray the Father Figure ; as he states, My father built this house, and it s my job to do the repairs.

Ellen, the youngest of the siblings, concentrates on appearances, specifically hers. While the family is

close her mouth when she is eating, to which Ellen responds sarcastically, Oh. Okay Dad. Sure thing,

The Ethical Implications Of Science And Technology
Science and technology are advancing at an extremely rapid pace, sometimes without regard to
consequences. In the 1950 s Robert Briggs and Thomas King were successfully able to clone frogs
using nuclei from embryonic cells. Then in 1996, Ian Wilmot cloned a sheep named Dolly from an
udder cell of an adult cell. The news of Dolly rocked the world to its core. All types of people began
surfacing with the ethical concerns about its potential uses and terror of what might come next: human
cloning. As reported in the article, Clinton Bars Federal Funds for Human Cloning Research by CNN,
in 1997, President Clinton stopped all federal funding for cloning. Clinton also called on privately
funded researchers to voluntarily implement a temporary moratorium on human cloning research until
our bioethics advisory committee and our entire nation has had time to... debate the ethical
implications (CNN). With scientific discoveries such as cloning many people rely on the wisdom of
repugnance to decide what is right and wrong. The wisdom of repugnance, which is more commonly
known as the yuck factor, is used in arguments to appeal to our sense of disgust. Some believe that the
wisdom of repugnance is an instinctive negative response to an idea or practice that should be
interpreted as evidence for the intrinsically harmful. Repugnance should not be the sole determining
factor when making a judgement, which is what author Leon R. Kass unjustly bases his against
cloning on.

  • 2. Absolute Concentration Lab Report The magnitude of a star is simply how bright the star is. The brightest stars were of first magnitude, however, the dullest were of sixth magnitude. The simple scale of magnitude was made popular by Ptolemy, but is thought to have started with Hipparchus. The scale is sometimes considered confusing since the brighter the star is, the smaller the magnitude it has. In 1856, Norman Robert Pogson determined the system of magnitude by specifying a first magnitude star as a star that is 100 times as bright as a sixth magnitude star, in that coming up with the logarithmic scale that we use today. It is important to note that the scale is logarithmic: the relative brightness of two objects is determined by the difference of their magnitudes (Wiki). The magnitude scale we use today is logarithmic, which means that for each unit stars go up the scale, they get dimmer by a factor of 2.512. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the brightest stars are considered to be of first magnitude, this equation calculates the magnitude. To calculate the absolute magnitude when the apparent magnitude and distance are known the formula is M=m 5log(d/10), M being the absolute magnitude, m being the apparent magnitude, and d being the distance. Absolute magnitude is how bright a star appears from 10 pc, or 33 light years, expressed as M . (Star Magnitude). Apparent magnitude m of a star is a number that tells how bright that star appears at its great distance from Earth (Apparent and absolute). The apparent brightness of a star depends of two components: the natural brightness of the star and the distance. Apparent magnitude is a bad index of how bright a star actually is. The apparent magnitude of a star has an equal apparent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effects Of Acid Rain On Plants Abstract Acid rain is a current issue due to the potential danger it could pose to plant life in the case that it is harmful to plants. In this lab, it was determined whether or not acid water was harmful to red radish plants, and in doing so, established the possible effects of acid rain on plants. It was hypothesized that the acid would take all nutrients from the soil, therefore harming the plants. In this lab, three plants two experimentals and one control were monitored after receiving either acid water or tap water. After the experiment was conducted, it was plain to see that the plants were affected negatively by the acid water, as the plants to receive the acid water immediately showed symptoms of nutrient deficiencies, therefore proving the hypothesis. As such, acid rain was proved to be a danger to the environment, as it destroys nutrients in the soil, therefore killing the plants. Without efforts to minimize acid rain, it could potentially destroy the ecosystem. Introduction The purpose of this lab is to determine whether or not acidic water affects the growth of red radish plants. Vinegar with a similar acidic pH as acid rain was used to water plants to simulate the effects of acid rain which is a current problem.. The pH used was 3.5. In comparison, the tap water was a pH of 7, a neutral liquid. By simulating acid rain and observing how the vinegar affects the plant, it will be possible to come to a conclusion about how acid rain may affect crops. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author gives us arguments and counterarguments that allow us to determine how technology affects our own thought processes. The author states how some people feel that the internet stretches our minds and bring people together however, some believe that it destroys our ability to think, communicate, and interact with others (167). • 5. The Paternalistic Doctor Patient Relationship It is difficult to imagine a time when exploitation of patients was a normal practice. It is worse that such a time was not all that long ago. While reading the story of Henrietta Lacks, I consistently had to remind myself that times were different. Doctors did not necessarily intend to harm their patients in any way, however it is impossible not to feel pity for Henrietta, her family, and any others who were mistreated simply due to the ignorance of the times. One of the noticeable recurrent themes of this story was the paternalistic doctor patient relationship. There were multiple occasions in which Day mentioned how he simply trusted the doctors to do what was right. He and Henrietta assumed doctors understood their patients needs better than the patients themselves, and therefore never asked questions. My understanding is that this was a common mentality at the time. I imagine this mentality was especially prominent among less fortunate classes of people who did not have the means to understand what their doctors were telling them. In cases in which harm befell patients, the doctor patient relationship was likely a primary culprit. Doctors had a paternalistic attitude, and therefore did not excel at communicating with their patients, specifically at a level that was appropriate to the given situation. Adding to the problem, patients did not ask questions, simply because they did not know they had the option to do so. The opportunity to observe a classic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Prosthetic Hip Dislocation And Its Effects Prosthetic Hip Dislocation A prosthetic hip dislocation means that your artificial hip joint (prosthesis) has moved out of place. This can happen because of a hard, direct hit or injury (trauma) to the hip, such as a fall. A prosthetic hip joint may be more likely to dislocate than a normal hip joint because a prosthetic hip joint does not have all the structures that normally hold the joint in place. After the prosthetic hip is moved back into place, you will generally recover fully. Prosthetic hip dislocation is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. CAUSES This condition is often caused by trauma to the hip. Trauma may be caused by: Falls, especially falls from a height. Motor vehicle accidents. Contact sports. Industrial accidents. RISK FACTORS This condition is more likely to develop in: People over 60 years of age. People with bone loss (osteoporosis). People who lack vitamin D. People who are overweight or obese. People who lack hip strength and flexibility. People with poor vision. SYMPTOMS Symptoms of this condition include: Severe pain in the hip area. Pain may get worse when you move or try to put weight on the hip. Inability to move the hip. The leg on the side of the dislocated hip appearing shorter than the other leg. The foot on the side of the dislocated hip turning inward. Loss of feeling in your lower leg, foot, or ankle. DIAGNOSIS This condition is diagnosed based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Essay on The Clouds and the History of Peloponnesian War Breaking down traditions: The Clouds and the History of Peloponnesian War Undeniably, the ancient Greek society places a heavy emphasis on values and traditions. The two texts of the Clouds by Aristophanes and History of the Peloponnesian war by Thucydides, although contextually divergent, are actually conceptually convergent. Both texts are built around the central theme of the collapse of conventional values. While the breakdown of traditional values in the History of the Peloponnesian war is presented in a more metaphorical and symbolical manner, the downfall of conventional values in the Clouds is on a more direct basis. Although both texts essentially convey across the same solemn message that the relinquishment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Making use of rhetoric devices and compromising the ideals of democracy breach the ideals of traditions in the Greek society. Unlike that in the Clouds , Thucydides does not show any sign of flaws of the traditional values. Although based on different circumstances, the breakdown of traditional values in The History of the Peloponnesian war parallels to that in the Clouds . The Clouds also utilizes extensive use of rhetoric devices. Strepsiades decides to submit to the sophist s way of education, so that he would be able to defend himself against his creditors. The first sign of erosion of traditional value is exposed when Strepsiades decides to enroll himself in the Thinkery under the guidance of Socrates. The ability to manipulate language and turn everything into relativism erodes the principles of traditional Athenian beliefs. Indisputably, the new philosophy wins. Sophistry is the type of linguistic device that, in the face of the weakness of traditional beliefs, undermines the value of anything. Strepsiades opines, Holy Earth, what a voice! How divine, how awesome, how fantastic! (363) In which Socrates responds, Yes, you know, these are the only real divinities, all the rest is bunkum. (365) In the new system of beliefs as advocated by the sophists, there is a rejection of the traditional religion and a belief in the new gods . The comical way through which ideas are portrayed may be witty, but the core issue lies at the heart of the play s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Burn rate study on Alliant (Green dot) smokeless shotgun powder and KClO4 Shalom AJ Cohen Philadelphia community college 11/2010 Abstract: The purpose of this project is to measure if differing amounts of potassium perchlorate, KCIO4, mixed with shotgun powder has an effect on burn rate. The experiment was videotaped and the duration of burn time for each amount used was recorded. KClO4, amounts ranging from .2g to 2g, were added to 4g of shotgun powder. A steel pipe that is ½ inch wide and 6 inch, which is welded vertically to a steel plate base was used for confinement. Ignition occurred from the top down. The hypothesis that was accepted is that the concentration of KClO4 will accelerate the burn rate of smokeless flake powder. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The burn rate of the mixture was recorded with a video camera and the results recorded and timed. The resulting footage was reviewed and the duration of the combustion noted on a tenth of a second basis. 4 grams of Alliant Green Dot double base smokeless flake powder with no KClO4 added was also recorded twice in the same manner, to give a baseline burn time and averaged. Raw Data Gun powder without additive burn time: Amount: Burn time: 4g 1.91s 4g 1.97s Amount of KClO4 added to 4 g shotgun powder: Amount: Burn time: 2g 1.23s .4g 1.86s .6g 2.76s .8g 1.98s 1g 2.76s 1.2g 1.92s 2g 1.98s DATA Conclusion: The gathered data shows a negative skew pattern. The average burn time for 4 g of Alliant, Green Dot double base smokeless powder with no KClO4 was 1.94 seconds. The burn rate with KClO4 ranged from 1.23 to 2. 76 seconds. 4 out of 7 tests provided results where the burning rate of the mixture were accelerated when KClO4 where added to the shotgun powder. Two tests showed a slight decline in the burn rate. The final test using 1g showed a decline in burn rate by 0.82 seconds. The Technology Development Of Autonomous Cars ABSTRACT Autonomous Vehicles are already being developed by the majority of the automobile companies as Audi, GM, Toyota among others, however, the approach on the technology development to achieve the autonomy is not the same for all of them. Some companies want so they invest a lot in artificial intelligence and software development. On the other side companies such as Toyota have the objective to improve the safety features on their cars, doing for that a lot of research on sensors and ECU (Electronic Control Units). In this project was researched 7 major companies that are currently investing in autonomous cars, being Google the only one that is new on the automobile industry but, accordingly to researches carried out by the group, the most advanced on this new type of technology, showing expressive results in their monthly reports INTRODUCTION Autonomous cars are going to be a reality on people s routines in a near future when the first units starts to being sold, however the unmanned technology is far from being a recent discovery. Researches have been conducted on the past 90 years when the American army started to assembly flying bombs equipped with gyroscopes and barometers as components of a navigation system. Kim is an autobiographical fictionalization of the author s youth in Japanese occupied Manchuria. Though not a traditional autobiography, the author tells his own story through the eyes of a nameless young man. The story takes place between 1932 and 1945. The young man grows and changes from the start of the novel to the end and meditates on the nature of war, family, duty and education among other things. A few years later, they will build a new school somewhere outside the town, exclusively for themselves. On the main character s first day, he sings a European song that he learned from one of his school friends back home in front of his new class. After the class, a Japanese teachers scolds and beats him simply because the song was of a foreign nature. The boy is defended by his own teacher, a Korean. This further stresses the ongoing fight against Japanese ethnocentrism that was so prevalent, even in such places as the schoolroom. The Japanese and their rabid ethnocentrism have their effect on the narrator s family. The family is generally happy and well structured. The narrator lives with his mother, father, little sister and grandfather. As mentioned before, the narrator s family pressures him to be better than the Japanese students. Upon returning home after being beaten, the men of the house invite him to eat with them and drink wine. This is a strong scene that is filled with the proudness of a parent for their son. • 12. Gilead And Powerlessness Most people feel powerless. They don t think they can affect larger events because they don t have money or political power. This makes many people not even try, instead acting selfishly, looking after themselves above the greater good. Offred is an exemplar of this phenomenon. She represents an average person, who feels powerless, and largely acts in self interest. This makes her, and everybody who thinks like her, complicit in Gilead s rise. Their feeling of powerlessness does not justify their selfishness. Throughout the book Offered thinks she is powerless. One such change which had a major impact was the abolishment of the old monarchy, or the end of absolute power of the monarchical form of government, present in France at that time. Revolutionary ideas also spread out of the country, throughout Europe, and unto the rest of the world. But what are the causes of this? Many of the problems in France lead to the revolution and the most general cause common to all revolutions can be found in the social structure of one s society (French Revolution, n.d.). Rise Of Competitive Authoritarianism The Rise of Competitive Authoritarianism: Main Features and Limits Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way fashionably unveil the major features of this new political regime. As clearly explained by the authors, Competitive Authoritarianism is a hybrid regime combining elements of Liberal Democracy and Authoritarian rule, and, for this reason, many political philosophers like Fukuyama look upon it as a transitional diminished democracy (Levitsky). However, political philosophers like Gat and Levitsky, supported by other scholars including Roger Owen, argue that Competitive Authoritarian regimes are promptly consolidating their political power in those country areas where Liberal Democracy is weakening like in Ukraine and Turkey, or it failed in some African countries and the Middle East. In sight of this speculative research, Competitive Authoritarianism is the current challenge to Liberal Democracy, therefore it minimizes the chance of being considered a transitional political regime. The protagonist is thrown all of the sudden into the real world and then, he continues to seek the absolute truth. Neo and the prisoner inquire whether knowing the truth is a blessing or a curse. China s prosperity denotes the first instance of realm building in the time of globalization. The United States played a key role in China s economic ascendance by advancing globalization and grasping, lately, free market conventionality (Zhang, Duysters Filippov, 2012). In the records of history, it will be noticed that it was the United States itself that championed another economic structure which at last undermined its own particular position on the planet. China s choice to open its economy to the world concurred with the U.S. drive for globalization. In addition, the United States and the Western companies opened the financial conduits to China through direct venture and subcontracting trade agreements. Notably, as the Western capitalism went global, China turned into the factory of the world. Student Name Samukumba Seyuba Student Number SYBSAM001 Course code PHI1024F Course Lecturer Dean Chapman Tutor Kajal Carr Does the Ontological Argument successfully show that God exists? God a being of which nothing greater can be conceived. (Blackburn, S, 1999. Think. New York United States of America, Oxford University Press Inc. 5:154) The ontological argument put forward by St Anselm, is based on this definition. The argument, Anselm s premises, the concept of god being understood, god existing in the understanding and god necessarily existing in reality, plus conclusion that god in fact exists, can be easily digested and understood but are also very confusing. In this essay I will argue that the ontological argument does not successfully prove that god exists as the argument not only contradicts itself but fails to put forward any solid proof for god s existence. The essay topic above raises two main areas of attention in need of address. These two areas being; the ontological argument and what it is, and secondly, whether or not this argument is successful in arriving at the conclusion of god s existence. To do the latter, I must first state the argument and what it is. The Ontological Argument states, following the definition of God above, that the concept of God or, a god, is understood (even by the fool as stated by Anselm) (Blackburn, 1999:154). Therefore as the concept of God is understood God therefore exists in the understanding (taken as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Father Gabriel traveled to the Guarani lands to convert the natives to Christianity. The title of the movie comes into play with the Priest joining Rodrigo Mendoza, who was a reformed slave trader, on a mission in South America. A treaty is formed between the Spanish and Portuguese that gave the Spanish territory to be ruled under Portuguese jurisdiction. Father Gabriel and Mendoza take it upon themselves to defend the priest s mission. Starting in the eighteenth century, the Jesuits began to fall under attack. These attacks occurred because other nations believed the Jesuits had gained too much power. It was believed that the Jesuits gained power from counseling during confessional, since they were confessors to some of the most powerful nations in Europe. As the Enlightenment occurred, it came to show that religion and the Church were not helping the progress of the economy. Because Spain and Portugal were in a political decline, the one goal was to get rid of the Jesuits. With the disagreements between Spain and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to preserve the Jesuit s order, the emissary orders the Jesuits to close their mission and give the land to the Portuguese. Since Altamirano rejected the priest s appeal, Father Gabriel and Mendoza decided to go on the mission to defend it. Altamirano is conflicted in his decisions because he has to choose the lesser of two evils. If he decides in favor of the colonists, the indigenous peoples will become enslaved; but if he rules in favor of the missions, the entire Jesuit Order may be condemned by the Portuguese, causing the Church to fall apart as well. • 34. The Ethical Implications Of Science And Technology Science and technology are advancing at an extremely rapid pace, sometimes without regard to consequences. In the 1950 s Robert Briggs and Thomas King were successfully able to clone frogs using nuclei from embryonic cells. Then in 1996, Ian Wilmot cloned a sheep named Dolly from an udder cell of an adult cell. The news of Dolly rocked the world to its core. All types of people began surfacing with the ethical concerns about its potential uses and terror of what might come next: human cloning. As reported in the article, Clinton Bars Federal Funds for Human Cloning Research by CNN, in 1997, President Clinton stopped all federal funding for cloning. Clinton also called on privately funded researchers to voluntarily implement a temporary moratorium on human cloning research until our bioethics advisory committee and our entire nation has had time to... debate the ethical implications (CNN). With scientific discoveries such as cloning many people rely on the wisdom of repugnance to decide what is right and wrong. The wisdom of repugnance, which is more commonly known as the yuck factor, is used in arguments to appeal to our sense of disgust. Some believe that the wisdom of repugnance is an instinctive negative response to an idea or practice that should be interpreted as evidence for the intrinsically harmful. Repugnance should not be the sole determining factor when making a judgement, which is what author Leon R. Kass unjustly bases his against cloning on. Leon R. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Living Writers Reflective Essay Living Writers taught me you can not fully understand the text as a reader until you have actively researched or engaged with the writer. I also learned you cannot accurately depict the perspective of a character as a writer until you try your best to fully embody and understand them. I took this class as an advertising major to fulfill a literature requirement. Meeting with Living Writers seemed like a promisingly unique experience. I thought my journalism classes prepared me to speak with strangers, but I was wrong. It turned out to be one of the most nerve wracking experiences of my life. Picking the brain of literary professionals is surprisingly quite intimidating. Throughout the term we have met Danielle Evans, Laila Lalami, Andre Dubus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was easy to judge him initially, but he s a really kind and down to earth person who really cares about accurate representation. His passion for writing is not self centered. He has a genuine curiosity for the world and the desire to travel and understand people. He told us he illegally lived around the Yosemite Valley for months to understand Tenaya s perspective as closely as he could. His talk reminded me of Laila Lalami, who discussed what it s like to live in a border city. Hoffmeister also discussed his relationship with borders. He told the class he hates the idea of owning land and having the right to separate people, even if they were there first. He also told us that the story of Tenaya visiting the resort to see Mackenzie was sparked from something he witnessed in real life. It was the instance of Tenaya coming across a Yosemeti image in the hotel bathroom labeled as Miwoks. Hoffmeister said he heard stories about this misrepresentation, but he had never seen it in real life until that day. He was shocked to learn that it was real. My relationship between the writer and text is much more positive after learning Hoffmeister tried his absolute best to understand Tenaya s perspective.
