An Analysis Of Salvador Dali s The Persistence Of Memory 1931
THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY (1931)
The Persistence of Memory (1931) was made in 1931 by Salvador Dali, the artwork is 24 x 33 cm oil
on canvas painting, and now the artwork is in The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The style of the
artwork is surrealistic. The subject matter is a barren landscape with melting clocks draped over
unrelated objects, caricature of Dali s face on the ground, plus a rocky headland with sea in the
background. The focal point of the artwork is the strange caricature of Dali s profile, complete with
eyelashes, tongue and nose. This is because it is so light amongst dark surrounding shadows on the
ground.
The artist used some surrealist techniques which is Metamorphosis, Rescaling of objects and out of

The main colours used are blue, yellow, orange and brown. There is also a specific scheme involved in
this artwork, which is orange and blue are opposite on the colour wheel, creating visual interest and
drama in the composition. Those colour been used to realistically describe forms, they also used to
communicate a feeling in this painting. The strongly contrasting colours creates a mysterious shadowy
atmosphere in the unusual foreground objects, which is balanced by the lighter landscape areas in the
horizon.
There are some lines been used in the artwork, which is thin, straight and neat. Dali used very thin and
detailed lines particularly on the foreground object such as the numbers on the clocks and the
eyelashes on his caricature s eye. He also used some shapes which is definite, geometric, organic and
detailed. Dali has created definite and detailed looking shapes. He has contrasted the organic shapes of
the boxes on the left hand side of the composition. There is a very strong tonal contrast between the
darker foreground, and the lighter background areas of the landscape. This contrast creates the effect
of visual interest in the composition. And the surface of the artwork is smooth. Any texture left on this
canvas would be implied to represent rougher areas, such as in the rocks and ants. Dali took extreme
care to ensure that his brush strokes were smooth and invisible to create a photographic

The World War II ( Wwii )
I see nothing, I hear nothing, I say nothing. I was not even there! Some people remember these words
from Sgt. Schultz in the series Hogan s Heroes, that ran from 1965 till 1971 on TV. Many people,
when they hear someone is from Germany or is German, assume that these people are or have
relations to the Nazi Regime. But only a few know, that during the World War II (WWII), there were a
few German non violent resistance groups. These groups tried to fight the Nazis from within. Just to
mention a few, there was the student circle who called themselves the White Rose, another one was
the Kreisau Circle, another group was The Swing Kids. But did these non violent movement groups
had any effects on the outcome of World War II?

He reported them to the Gestapo, who later picked also Christopher Probst up, and brought them down
to the Gestapo station, where they were questioned, incarcerated, swiftly trialed for high treason and
on February 22nd 1943 executed. When the guard came to his (Hans Scholl) cell to take him to the
court for sentencing, Hans looked at the prison wall and smiled. He had written the words of Goethe
that his father had often repeated: Hold out in defiance of all despotism . (Henderson, 2005 p.42)
At Professor Huber s trial, Kurt Huber used the words of Johann Gottlieb Fichte (a German poet 1762
1814) in his defense speech: And thou shalt act as if on thee and on thy deed depended the fate of all
Germany, and thou alone must answer for it. The White Rose was maybe not well organized when it
came to standing up against the Nazi genocidal policies, but they made their voices to be heard. They
inspired other student resistance, which included a riot, street march and graffiti, while their
movement was reported internationally, inspiring German POWs to write leaflets that were duplicated
and airdropped by their Russian captors. (Branagan, 2014 p.31 38)

Salvador Dali Face Of War Essay
Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist who drew some of the most gorgeous yet obscure paintings in the
world today. The nuances of his work express such great ideas that it is believed one could never
perfectly analyze one of his works of art. Sticking to this trend, The Face of War is a somewhat ugly
landscape painting with a moving meaning behind every stroke. The desert set painting features a
snake inundated, skull like face which was drawn to personify everything that war is. The subtleties in
the picture help describe this personification further, as it fleshes out the idea that war is an atrocious
and terrifying occurrence that leaves sheer agony in the wake of everything it touches. Those tortured
by such an event are left with permanent scars, whether it be in the form of the loss of their home,
morals, or even life. The backdrop for the work is a desolate desert which seems to extend completely
empty all the way until it meets the horizon. In the forefront of the image, a gaunt face which could
quickly be mistake for a skull extends from the top to the bottom of the canvas with a morbidly
distraught expression overcoming it. In the orifices where there should be eyes and a mouth, another
head appears in each, with this repeating for the openings of that face and so on until what seems to be
infinity. While each visage seems to resemble the last, it is notable that as they getter smaller and
smaller (sinking deeper into the picture), the faces seem to become more

Consumerisms In Recession
The recession that will be focused on is the most recent 2007 2009 recession. This recession cost the
US labor market 8.4 million jobs. Job loss is one of the hardest things to recover from after a
recession. Stocks go up, consumers continue with their purchases as some of them release times are
getting better. However the economy is a rollercoaster, it goes from being at the top of the track with
stocks high, and jobs growing each day to slowly descending to a crash, or in the reference of the
rollercoaster descending off of the hill that it climbed to. Consumers in today s society see a recession
as a new trend, and the way they spend reflects as such during this time. Consumerisms in a recession
are a foundation for recovery; the spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Previously society experienced the rise and fall more sporadically, however today, the recessions are
so close together that it is becoming more and more difficult to analyze the space in between. In the
recessions of 1974 1975 the government leaders, who took the iniative to alert people that in the
coming year they would experience a downturn, foresaw the recession. This recession was recorder to
be the worst since the 1930 s, for an accumulation of reasons; the largest factor being the American
aggression in the Vietnam War . Paul Volcker was a critic on the American dollar and the American s
involvement by stating Our failure to face up to the financing of the Vietnam war [was] one key factor
in setting up the subsequent inflation . This is a statement that could be used for any recession. Simply
by changing the war, and the point in which the quote could be referring to, there is the leading cause
to a recession. However, the war would then affect the natural state of the economy. Without the war
the government would have used the money elsewhere, would have gone where it needs to go, or
would the government find another cause to invest in? The questions of government spending follows
a dangerous line of whether the money spent in one place was worth it. However, with the investment
in war, it puts a deficit on the country, which leads

Fahrenheit 451 Conformity Quotes
According to the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Rollo May s quote The opposite of courage
in our society is not cowardice, it s conformity is inaccurate because for what these people in the
society conformed to, is a coward act on it s own. To go ahead and follow something you don t have
knowledge on with the stakes so high and then not give others a voice when they bring viewpoints that
differ to what you originally conformed to, is known as a cowardly act. Conforming is just a cover up
stuck in ignorance and stubbornness, an excuse for cowardice. Mildred, the main character Guy
Montag s wife, equates a coward. In this particular scene, Montag has arrived with Captain Beatty and
the other firemen ready to burn down another house ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The men watch as Mildred flees from the house in a hurry with a distraught look on her face,
murmuring. Poor family, poor family, oh everything gone, everything, everything gone now...
(Bradbury page 108) Mildred is a strong candidate of someone who is a coward in the Fahrenheit 451
society. Her husband Montag had recently shown her his life long secret and had asked her the only
favor ever, to keep his secret about stealing illegal books. Instead, Mildred showed her ignorance and
was stubborn about changing for the right reasons, committing a cowardly act of snitching on Montag,
therefore conforming once again to the terrible, lying community they live in. Mildred lives a pathetic,
lonely life consisting of her loved ones which only contained televisions. In the quote, while Mildred
was running from the house, she was worrying and feeling regretful but not for Montag, for leaving
her family behind. Montag on the other hand, differs from Mildred. He started off his life as a
conformist and became courageous through others opening his

Tex Wash Bridge Research Paper
The Tex Wash Bridge
The Tex Wash Bridge was built in 1967, listed as functionally obsolete in 2014, and failed do to
collapsing in July of 2015. After 2014 inspections were made and no flaws were detected so it was left
unchanged. In 1967, the construction crew had the task of spanning the Tex Wash to connect the
freeway between California and Arizona along the Chuckwalla Mountains. They decided the best, and
most cost effective, way of doing this is by channeling a dry riverbed and narrowing it where the
bridge was to stand. The columns of the bridge were to stand on their foundations which was sitting
on the soil and the banks of the bridges were given large rocks to protect their foundation from being
washed away (Kelman).

They can be caused by several different events including the undercutting a slope, or wearing away at
the base of a hill from underground, because of stream erosion, or heavy or lengthy rainfall, rapid

Difference Between Menarche And Menopause
INTRODUCTION
Women who were the most dormant segment of the Indian population have now become active
participants in all aspects of life (Gyan, 2015). She bear s a special gift of bearing, rearing children.
The major concern in woman s life is reproductive health and they need enormous attention.
Menarche and menopause are the two important phases of the reproductive cycle. The menopause is a
time in women s life when the reproductive capacity ceases. In menopause, the post menopausal stage
is the time next to menopause and peri menopausal is the stage during which menopausal changes
occur (Pillitteri,1999).
In early menopausal transition, estrogen levels are generally normal or even slightly increased; the
level of follicle stimulating hormone begins to elevate but is generally in the normal range (Deborah
Grady, 2006). The women, in the transition to menopause, may experience vasomotor, psychosomatic,
urogenital, psychological symptoms, and an increased the tendency to obesity, as well as sexual
dysfunction. The prevalence of these symptoms linked to menopause different across ethnic,
socioeconomic groups and between urban and rural women (Das Gupta, et al. 2009). These ... Show

The starting point of the menopausal changes seems to be the reduction of the ovum in the ovaries
(Kirkwood, 1998). The female hormones produced from ovaries, which control the development of
female body characteristics such as the body shape, breasts, and body hair. Both estradiol E2 and the
peptide hormones Inhibin A and Inhibin B are secreted in the granulosa cells of the ovary, and the
quantity produced is influenced by the pituitary hormones; follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and
luteinizing hormone (LH). Declining levels of inhibin B and A is followed by increasing levels of FSH
and marks the onset of the menopause. LH levels also elevate, but less marked compared to FSH

Understanding Cultural Identity
Understanding Your Cultural Identity Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and
as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others (McAdoo, 1993; Sheets, 1999a)
(Trumbull and Pacheco 9). The very idea of being able to understand your own culture can better you
as a person and give you an even deeper understanding of life. Such cultural things you should
understand is your beliefs, the types of food you eat, what types of ethnicity they belong to, and even
where you live. These four things can give you a deeper understanding of your own culture. Now a

How could the Holocaust have beet prevented
COULD THE HOLOCAUST HAVE BEEN PREVENTED?
You have probably heard about a period of time, not so long ago, known as The Holocaust. A
holocaust, according to Webster s dictionary, is a complete destruction by fire (Stadtler, 1). In Europe,
during this period, there was a complete destruction by fire of Jewish homes, Jewish businesses,
Jewish neighborhoods, and Jewish people. This destruction was carried out under the direction of
Adolf Hitler, during the years 1939 1945, but it actually began earlier, in 1933, when Hitler came to
power in Germany.
In my opinion, the Holocaust, which was caused by ignorance, could very well have been prevented.
There were many powerful nations, such as the United Stated, the USSR, and Britain, whose ... Show

With Germans of all outlooks desperately seeking solutions for the nation s problems, Adolf Hitler and
the Nazi Party began their climb to power. Hitler was gifted with effective political talents. He offered
an explanation for Germany s defeat, and a vision of Germany s future destiny, that played upon the
fears, prejudices, and hopes of many Germans. He promised to rebuild Germany s power and restore
its prosperity (Isaacman, 16). This won the support of many Germans. Hitler was such an effective
speaker that anything he said was believed even if it was not true.
Hitler believed that the German people were part of an Aryan race, a superior group that should be
kept pure to fulfill their mission of ruling the world. He felt that the Jewish people were sub human,
when in actuality they were virtually the same as his Aryan race. Not only did Hitler have a personal
hatred toward the Jewish people, but he also blamed them for stabbing Germany in the back after
Germany s defeat in World War I. Hitler used them as scapegoats because they were a minority and
were easy to put the blame on. Historians agree that the Holocaust resulted from a confluence of
various factors in a complex historical situation. That anti Semitism festered throughout the centuries
in European culture is centrally important; the Jews were (and are) a minority civilization in a
majority environment. In periods of crisis, instead of searching for the solution of

1900 1910
At the beginning of the 20th century a New York editorialist wrote that the 20th century began in the
United States with a sense of euphoria and self satisfaction, a sure feeling that America is the envy of
the world (World History Timeline 1900 1901 ). The president was Teddy Roosevelt, who enjoyed
enormous popularity due to the general happiness of the American people. A thriving industry created
many jobs for immigrants and others. A monumental event took place in 1901 when the New York
Stock Exchange exceeded 2 million shares for the first time ever (World History Timeline 1900 1901

during the decade was the Russo Japanese War. The two countries battled over the control of
Manchuria and Korea, and the Russians were forced to surrender (Historical Daily Almanac 1905 ).
Also around the globe, in the field of psychology, the great Sigmund Freud wrote a book called The
Interpretation of Dreams (Magill 14). This book documented Freud s theory that dreams are
meaningful and can be understood. Another great mind of that era was Albert Einstein. He came up
with his theory of relativity in 1905(Magill 19).
Great artists of the world were also creating some of their most brilliant work during this decade.
Henri Matisse fought to find the artistic freedom he needed by creating the Fauvist movement in the
early 1900 s(Pioch 2). Fauvism led to the larger movement called Expressionism, a term used to
describe any art that raises subjective feelings above objective observations (Pioch 4). Georges
Rouault was another pioneer of the Expressionist movement; he was a Frenchman who linked the
decorative effects of Fauvism in France with the symbolic color of German Expressionism (Pioch 6).
Another leading artist of the time period was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German who wanted his art to
be a bridge to the future (Pioch 6). These men were very important artists, but

Benefits Of Fluoride Treatments
Although tooth decay is largely preventable, it s still the most common chronic disease in children.
And while fluoride plays a key role in strengthening tooth enamel and preventing decay, parents often
opt out of in office fluoride treatments due to the lack of dental insurance and concerns over cost. Here
s why the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that all children, at risk for decay,
receive professional fluoride treatments and how a dental discount plan can make these crucial
services affordable for your family.
Benefits vs Cost of Fluoride Treatments
When fluoride is applied directly to the teeth, it incorporates into the outer layer of enamel, making it
harder and more resistance to bacterial acid attacks that cause tooth decay. In addition, topical fluoride
can help stop early decay by remineralizing and repairing enamel. ... Show more content on

Marriage In The Miller s Tale
The word Marriage is defined as, The state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual
relationship recognized by law (Marrium Webster). Per the tales of Chaucer, marriage is so much
more than that. By pulling back the layers of some of his tales, I found that Chaucer had several
different views on marriage, what makes it work, and what doesn t. I examined the following tales:
The Wife of Bath , The Clerk s Tale , The Merchant s Tale , The Miller s Tale , and The Franklin s Tale
. I found that according to Chaucer, the qualities that can make or break a marriage include: control,
trust, loyalty, and age or youth. This paper will explain each tale and aim to show how each role is
played out in each of those tales. The Wife of Bath is a tale about a knight who rapes a girl and is
sentenced to death. However, the Queen wants to spare his life so she offers him a quest. She sends
him hunting for an answer as to what it is that women want most. He goes out on this quest and ...

A similar story happens in The Miller s Tale where a woman named Alisoun and her lover, Nicholas,
come up with a story that a great flood is coming and they must all spend the night in boats hanging

and once again, it works. Both stories seem to insinuate that age plays a huge role in the success and
happiness in a marriage. It shows readers that by being younger, both women have a sort of power
over their husbands. As long as they are making their husbands happy, the husbands turn an eye to the
things they ought not to be doing. One article even says that John, Alisoun s husband, is a cuckold ,

An Investigation Into Smes Survival and the Discrimination...
Introduction
In a competitive global market, micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) play an
increasingly important role in a nation s economy. Today they make a substantial contribution to job
creation, innovation, as well as entrepreneurial skills. A report conducted by European
Commision(2005) stated that in the enlarged European Union of 25 countries, 23 million SMEs
provide about 75 million jobs and account for 99% of all enterprise. SMEs are also the vital attributes
for lifting the productivity of economy. This is primarily because SMEs are been considered as having

So in order to survive, firms have to look out for financial threats to the firms solvency and maintain
effective management control over their finances.
2. Human capital
In most SMEs, power is centralized in the hands of the owner managers and the owner managers
always play multiple roles in a company, including general manager, sales manager, production
manager, financial manager and so on, so that characteristics of the owner managers, such as
education background, family business background, personal goals, previous work experience,
strategic awareness have a significantly impact on firm s activities and performance. Several studies
indicate that in SMEs, the personality of the owner managers is a critical determinant of corporate
structure and strategy(Miller and Droge 1986; Miller and Toulouse 1986). Owner managers who are
inability to motivate staff, rarely listen to others advices, have little knowledge of marketing strategy,
finance, and personnel management may act as a significant constraint to SMEs survival.
On the other hand, owner managers are not experts at everything, many owner managers in small
firms are lack of the leadership and management skills which are necessary for the firms survival and
growth. Deakins and Freel (1998) found that one of the critical factors in the success of a SME was

United States And The Open Skies Agreements Essay
The United States has numerous Open Skies agreements with most countries around the globe. The
agreements allow foreign airlines to fly to the U.S. with few, if any, restrictions from the U.S.
government and U.S. carriers to fly to foreign countries, also with little or no government restrictions.
However, many of the U.S. carriers, such as Delta, American, and United, believe that the Open Skies
agreements have some major loopholes, allowing the few subsidized airlines, such as Emirates, Qatar
Airways, and Etihad, to fly to the United States, as well as numerous other countries across the globe,
at lower operating costs than their non subsidized competition have to pay for the same route. These
agreements also allow the practice of fifth freedom operations. Fifth freedom operations permit one
airline to fly from their home country to another participating country, drop off and pick up
passengers, fly to a second participating country and then fly the whole route in reverse. These routes
are known as fifth freedom routes. Since they oppose the idea of fifth freedom routes, Delta,
American, and United [the U.S. Three] all want the U.S. government to limit the number of flights
these Persian Gulf carriers can operate to the U.S. because they believe that they are losing revenue
and customers to this group, known as the Middle East Three. One popular discussion topic is the idea
of fifth freedom routes. Ted Reed, a contributor to Forbes magazine, explains to the

to pain. I have now been living with Insomnia for the past 2 years and still am learning more about it.
Most people think that insomnia is just the inability to sleep. It actually has different levels that
include having a hard time going to sleep, and staying asleep, and not feeling rested when you wake

It also helps prepare the brain to recall the information stored in an efficient manner the next day when
needed. What the research studies have found is that patients suffering from insomnia have a problem
with this ability. People who suffer from insomnia might not even know they are exhibiting these
symptoms. To them they just might feel like they are having a hard time getting a handle on the day. In
people who suffer from acute insomnia it may seem like they are just having in a rut and that can
possibly end up affecting their work. Next point is fatigue. Fatigue can be a symptom of insomnia.
And when looked at closer at what things fatigue includes it s easy to see how it has a negative effect
on some ones quality of life. Researchers like Ahmed M. Abdel Khaiek, Ph.D. have that fatigue can
have a negative effect on an individual s immune system. Fatigue can affect an individual s immune
system by making them more susceptible to infection and illness such as the flu. Also if someone is
fatigued they can be accident prone. People who suffer from insomnia and display fatigue also have a
tendency to have slower reaction times, and may even end up causing an accident if they were to be

concerns among researchers. Research studies show that people who suffer from insomnia are at

The case of 44 Liquormart, Inc. vs.
Rhode Island upholds the industry s commercial free speech rights by insuring that beverage alcohol is
allowed the same protection under the First Amendment as other legal products and services.
In addition, the Courts also ruled that truthful and non misleading advertising is an essential part of the
free enterprise system. Withholding this form of advertising deprives the consumers of knowledge that
is needed to make conscious and informed decisions.
Federal Regulations
Advertising hard liquor on TV is a constitutionally protected right, however, the industry must follow
strict Federal regulations. An advertisement of distilled spirits can not contain any false or misleading
statement that tends to create a misleading impression of the product to the consumer. Furthermore, a
statement in an advertisement cannot say anything bad about a competitor s product. Provisions are

Similarities Between The Christian Rosary And The Buddhist...
A religious individual may most gloriously carry out his or her own rituals, as a part of his or her
cultural identity, but the moment, that person starts to build a wall of separation between the self and
the rest of humanity, coaxed by the textual commands of a scripture, the healthy religiousness turns
into dangerous fundamentalism, which is a threat to both the self and the society. (Abhijit Naskar). In
the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people apart, and
hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By focusing on the
differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist between different
faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same philosophies.
However, by focusing on the similarities of different religion, through philosophies, rituals, or
teachings, we can then learn how to tear down walls, grow as people, and become cognitive of our
joint humanity. With the necessity of ecumenical relations in our community, it serves humans to see
the similarities between the faiths that can divide us. On such similarity exists between the rituals of
the Christian Rosary and the Buddhist tradition of Prayer Wheels, both are physical guides for
repetitive prayers and personal reflection and meditation. The Catholic tradition of the Rosary is a
long held practice of Marian prayer which dates back millennia. The tradition of the

Saudi Arabia Culture
From its rich and varied cultural history and practices to its stunningly beautiful cities full of unique
architecture, Saudi Arabia is a fascinating country. With its acknowledged status as the birthplace of
Islam, Saudi Arabia is an important cultural and religious hub for many who come seeking spiritual
enlightenment or simply a chance to experience the bustling cities and thriving commerce of the
prosperous metropolises. With a population of over 28 million people, Saudi Arabia is a vital part of
the Middle East, with some major influence on the Arab countries around it. In order to fully
appreciate the unique customs and overall societal expectations of this or any other country, one must
understand not only its geographical location and a few key facts about it, but how it functions both as
a nation made up of many diverse minds, and as a singular driving force in the complicated dance
between all the nations of the world. With this in mind, there are several factors to consider when
studying a country such as Saudi Arabia, namely, the main language, the major religion, the culture
and cultural norms, and the business etiquette. One of the most defining components of any nation is
the diversity of language that is often utilized by a countries citizen. Language is immensely powerful,
and the breadth of vocabulary and concepts a language can offer often provide an individual the tools
needed to not only interact with persons of a similar nationality, but to interact

Gender Roles In The Dispossessed
In Ursula K. Le Guin s utopian novel The Dispossessed, gender roles are one of the main theme in the
novel. The author uses two planets, Anarres and Urras to represent the different form of society, to
understand gender roles. In Urras, which is an Earth like world, women are treated as if owned by
men. However, in Anarres, a person s sex is irrelevant to the society, therefore there was an equality of
gender. Le Guin s purpose for this was to make her audience subconsciously think about how society
view gender roles by uses the affinity of a visitor, shevek to an Earth like world to illustrate the
disunity of the Earth like customs. By comparing the two twin planets, Le Guin uses gender role in the
novel to critique our society by using

The Gaze In George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty-Four
Empowerment and disempowerment using the gaze is manifested as one of the fundamental themes in
George Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four (1949). Written in 1944, Nineteen Eighty Four is a novel
which portrays the experiences of Winston Smith, the protagonist and other significant characters such
as Julia who are bound to live within a totalitarian regime in which the powerful forces are
manipulation and fear. The work of literature demonstrates the visionary concept of how totalitarian
regimes may evolve if they were permitted to do so. The power of the gaze is investigated in Nineteen
Eighty Four to assess how the protagonists in the book are given power and also disempowered by the
supervising gaze, the desiring gaze and the egalitarian gaze. Hence, formulating the following

Paul Baumer, our narrator, is a young soldier within the German infantry along with a group of his

the fighting and how they would be saving their homeland. Our story starts out on the front lines

surrounding them they have become disillusioned by the war. They have quickly learned that it s not

Last, you want to write a final copy. This should be error free. It can be written in pen or typed. Most

How to Write an Argumentative Essay Step by Step
Argumentative essays intimidate lots of students because of the structure an instructor expects.
Instructors will expect well written, tightly argued essays, but that doesn t mean the paper needs to be
twenty pages long or should refer to a dozen or more sources. What it does mean, however, is that a
student takes a stand on an issue, presents his side of the argument while refuting his opposition, and
also integrates outside sources that help support his point of view.

Modeling The Agrometeorological Indices Of The Surface...
. Modeling the agrometeorological indices
The surface temperature (T0) product was not used because with a lower spatial resolution (1000 km),
there were cloud contaminations in some parts of the Minas Gerais state along the years. Instead, T0
was retrieved by residue in the radiation balance after having estimated the atmospheric and surface
emissivities (Teixeira et al., 2016a,b).
Cleugh et al. (2007) pointed out that the use of instantaneous measurements of the radiometric surface
temperature to calculate time averaged fluxes led to errors. They emphasized uncertainties in models
which use the MODIS 8 day that is a composite of once daily overpass at ~ 10:30 h local time. In this
case, the radiometric temperature is determined under a view angle at the satellite overpass time, using
emissivities based on vegetation classes at a 1 km grid that differs from that of the MODIS pixel
location.
The parameterizations involved in the agrometeorological indices by using the SAFER algorithm in
this chapter were done in Brazil with simultaneous satellite and field measurements, under strong
contrasting agro ecosystems and thermohydrological conditions throughout different years (Teixeira et
al., 2008, 2014a). In addition, acquiring T0 as residue in the radiation balance gives mutual
compensation, reducing possible errors in this model input parameter, and as in the upward and
downward longwave fluxes, they are self canceling. Moreover, a correction factor is applied to

Art And Its Impact On Society
Art plays a very important role in our society, it is an opportunity to express what we feel, what we
think, what we hope, what we love or hate, what we want to change, how we visualize the future, and
what motivate us. As humans we have the natural necessity to express and show those feelings. Art
has existed throughout the years and across the world in some form or another. It is a part of our daily
lives and has huge meaning to all the different cultures across the world. Creativity is essential to
create art and most people enjoy it in some form, whether it is music, paintings, dance, statues or
buildings. Art can also be found in other fields as engineering, physics and mathematics. The arts,
both visual and performing, are part of our humanity and provide us a variety of ways to express
ourselves. Art appreciation may vary from person to person. Viewers will judge art based on their own
definition of beauty. However, it is important to not just look at the piece of art but take a deeper
observation and interpret the meaning behind it. What a piece of art means can often times be more
important than how it looks. Instead of simply judging whether a piece of art is visually pleasing or
not, the observer should react to the message that the author is sending through his creation. When
reacting to the meaning of a piece of art, the basic values, beliefs, and ideology that the viewers
possess affect how they see and what they see on the

Analysis Of A Farewell By Amy Levy
A Farewell by Amy Levy reflects the life of an outsider in the 19th century. The speaker portrays the
internal battle that Levy faces in a racist and sexist society as being not only Jewish but a strong
feminist and lesbian. By living through the speaker Levy is able to express her deepest thoughts and
beliefs about contemporary society, and how it has come to affect her ultimately causing her to take
her own life. The poem immediately sets a tone of unhappiness that is constant throughout the poem.
The speaker describes the setting of the scene: the sad rain falls from Heaven (l.1). The sad rain
indicates the darker state of an unjust civilization and how it causes the speaker to become depressed.
The word heaven is used to signify that even God looks down on mankind and deems it unfair.
Heaven also gives the poem religious context which may be related to Levy being Jewish in a
dominating Christian society and how this causes her to be discriminated against. The speaker realizes
their personal truths while they look from outside culture inwards. A window is used to signify a
barrier between the speaker and the general public. The society that the speaker lives in is unjust and
causes the speaker to feel foreign in her own culture, and thus relates to Amy Levy s present barriers
as a young Jewish woman who wishes for acceptance. The speaker sadly says, I am sitting here at my
window (l. 3), which represents the life she cannot have but has to watch on the other side of

Does Economic Globalization Affect Interstate Military...
DOES ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION AFFECT INTERSTATE MILITARY CONFLICT?
I
Although there is still not agreement on a common definition of this phenomenon, in this paper I will
accept the one developed by R.M. Joshi (2009). He identifies, indeed, Economic Globalization as the
increasing economic integration and interdependence of national, regional and local economies across
the world through an intensification of cross border movement of goods, services, technologies and
capital
There are two good reasons, in my opinion to accept Prof. Joshi s definition. First, it contains two core
point affecting every aspect of that phenomena: Interdependence and Cross border movements.
Second, it focuses on the interaction among markets avoiding approximate expression often used in
public debate as Global Economy and Global Market that could mislead the reader, where national
states still play an important role in Economies destinies, many people are not involved in economy,
some markets still operate on a local level, transnational corporations are anyway nationally based and
we can not (still) talk about a global labour market. (Aspers and Kohl 2011).

Courbet’s “the Stone Breakers”
Courbet (1819 1877) is a realistic painter, in that a majority of his work is about everyday scenes,
often depicting peasants and working people in rural areas. Howerver, Courbet is also an artist who
challenged the traditional painting in the middle of the 19th century. Courbet introduced a new kind of
realism, which focused on a rugged depiction of nature and people rather than an idealized and
artificial one. Most paintings of the time showed wealthy people, whereas Courbet who was politically
involved in socialist causes, applied his political beliefs to art. (Crapo: 240 241) Crapo writes that for
Courbet realism posed a direct challenge to the aesthetic of the academic painters. It meant the

(Alexander, 1965) Alexander writes that Courbet studied Renaissance and Baroque paintings from
Northern Europe as well as from Italy, and that he liked to mix classical visual ideas with the

the still novel photography. (Alexander: 447) At the time he painted Stone Breakers he made another
work called The Wrestlers which shows two very muscular, almost naked men, wrestling in a field.
Their bulky shapes make them look almost like mythological heroes from Ancient Greece. The
excavation of Assyrian sculpture at the time had a major influence on the look of the naked figures
and the position of figures in Courbet s work. (Alexander: 448) Assyrian frieze sculpture was notable
for exaggeration of subcutaneous elements, blood vessels, muscles, and bones... (Alexander: 449) Yet
during his career he often faced criticism for being too rigid in his style. (Shapiro, 165) His work was
also accused of being primitive and vulgar. (Schapiro: 166) This criticism came not only from art
patrons and spectators, but also from other artists, such as Delacroix, also considered a French realist.

The relationship between the therapist and the client is non directive. The therapist is supportive, non

In fact, according to Rogers (1957), the relationship is based on three therapist characteristics or

Congruency (or genuineness): . . .within the relationship (the therapist) is freely and deeply himself,
with his actual experience accurately represented by his awareness of himself . . . and . . .he is what he

Comparing The Scottsboro Trial And Tom Robinson s Trial
Comparative Essay There are many basic parallels between the Scottsboro Trial and Tom Robinson s
Trial, in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. As Harper Lee grew, up, she was surrounded with
news of the Scottsboro Trial, which had a large impact in her novel. But there are also many deeper
parallels between these two. Both trials contained African American(s) being accused of rape to a
white woman, but Lee had a way to show this through a child s eyes, presumably, her as a young child

quote describes Victoria as more garrulous than Ruby, and Mayella has both the shyer qualities of
Ruby, but the talkative qualities of Victoria. Lee wrote her this way, as she is the false accuser in Tom

with her father, and him persuading (or threatening) her to accuse Tom, this can be compared to
Victoria and Ruby being bribed by two lawyers to change their testimony. They were both asked to do

prepared for, and had to think of an answer, that would satisfy Atticus and her father, but not her.
Victoria and Ruby did not want to admit they were spending time with African Americans, as that fact
would destroy their images. The characterization of Mayella is based off the actions and feelings of
Victoria and Ruby. The Juries in both stories were very harsh against the defendant(s). In the

The three main key events that are included in the novel include the crucial reasoning to why Malcolm
expressed himself the way he did. The events that distinguished Malcolm s character were racial

Ruth Handler created Barbie, after noticing her daughter playing with paper dolls and she was playing
the role of a mother, as most women were expected to be. The basic standard for women were to be a
housewife, and most young girl s toys were children or infants. Ms. Handler wanted to influence
young girls to be anything they wanted. Barbie s purpose was to be an adult to further portray the

The Mythology of Puritains
In modern American mythology, the Puritans were characterized, by many Americans, as being
nothing more than an extreme group of dour religious ascetics who abhorred anything that had to do
with humor or sex. This image is fallacious. Furthermore, the Puritans were nothing more than another
group of humans who defined their own world with their cultural norms, and values. To better
understand the Puritans we have to expunge any mythology surrounding these people, and we have to
study them on their own terms through their eyes if at all possible through the written record.
The first major myth that must be deconstructed is that the Puritans were sexual prudes. Americans
believed that the Puritans considered marriage as nothing more than a necessary evil that was used for
only sexual reproduction. Moreover, many Americans believe that the Puritans tried to hide the
physical aspect of a relationship as much as possible. This stereotype is false. The Puritans held a very
different perspective about marriage and sex. John Cotton, a Puritan minister, stated Women are
creatures without which there is no comfortable living for man: it is true of them what is wont to be

1940s Clothing Trends
World War II significantly altered fashion in the 1940s. However, fashion was still able to flourish in
numerous ways. The war effort led to rationing due to material restrictions and labor shortages for
manufacturing in multiple countries. Therefore, fabric was limited. Wool was used to make
parachutes, maps, and gunpowder bags. Viscose and rayon would become the dominant material for
civilian clothes during World War II. Rationing led to the development of the Utility scheme which
was introduced by the Board of Trade in 1941 as a response to the shortage of clothing materials and
labor required for the war effort in Great Britain. The utility scheme ensured savings of labor and
materials and minimized manufacturing costs. This impacted men s ... Show more content on

While Europe took some time to reactivate its leisure wear industry, US manufacturers with
experience in sports clothing were quick to produce new lines The Sports jacket became a staple in
men s fashion in the 1940s. World War II altered the suit jacket. Before the war, suit jackets had wide
peaked lapels and double breasted. During the war, sports coats became single breasted. Lapels
became narrower as well. The number of pockets was also restricted. The design of the sports jacket
followed the same suit. Sports coat or leisure coats were different from the suit jacket. Although
similar in cut and length to a suit jacket, sports jackets can be worn on its own and are considered less
formal. Sports jackets were essential in leisurewear. Leisurewear emphasized comfortability. Then
came the changes in the sports jacket. The shoulders were fuller, sleeves wider, and the armholes
larger. The sports jacket gave men the opportunity to dress differently after work or on the weekends.
Just as the lounge suit was beginning to replace formal suiting worn to the office, the tweed jacket
became an acceptable part of casual dress. After World War II, men wore sports jackets and loose
flannel trousers without a waistcoat or a tie. This change to accommodate leisurewear was influential.
Sports jackets were now becoming a norm in

The Third Person Point Of View In The Lottery By Shirley...
The third person limited point of view of The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, strengthens the short story
by its suspense, its characterization, and its ordinary setting. The third person limited point of view
creates suspense because it foreshadows but does not disclose the surprise ending. For example, the
narrator describes most of the townspeople as being quiet, wetting their lips, not looking around, but
he does not explain their rationale. By quotations and descriptions of actions, the third person limited
point of view depicts in a controlled manner the story s important characters. Davy represents those
who do not understand the lottery. Davy put his hand into the box and laughed. Mrs. Delacroix
represents those who think of the

The Alamo Battle Analysis
The purpose of this paper is to discuss an alternate ending to one of the greatest battles in Texas
history, the battle of the Alamo. This paper will show how using Intellectual standards and critical
seasoning can be used to conduct battle analysis as well as develop and alternate outcome to a
historical battle. The turning point in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico was the fight at
the Alamo again Santa Ana. If Santa Ana would not have won that decisive victory over the Texas
militia at the Alamo, the fight for Independence from Mexico would have possibly taken longer to
rally the troops. Before the siege at the Alamo, Santa Ana used his understanding of the battlefield by

That instant when the Alamo fell, intertwined Santa Ana s fate with the Alamo. (LSJunction, 1999)
What if Santa Ana did not strategically place forces around the Alamo and reinforcements had come to
aid the Alamo? The Alamo was never intended to be a defensive position by any means, but was
meant to be a mission. The Mission San Antonio De Valero, established in the early 18th century, was
situated along the San Antonio River. By 1800, the missionaries were displaced and their land was
seized for military purposes. Occupying soldiers called the Mission turned garrison El Alamo after the
cottonwood trees surrounding it. Eventually the mission was officially renamed The Alamo. First
Spanish soldiers, then Mexican soldiers occupied The Alamo. With only 200 Texan soldiers defending
the Alamo, Santa Ana lost 600 soldiers during the 13 day siege of the Alamo. Reinforcements would
have turned the tide in favor of the Texans. William B. Travis wrote a letter to the people of Texas and
all Americans. I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna I have
sustained a continual Bombardment cannonade for 24 hours have not lost a man. The enemy has

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
In the early stages, symptoms indicating that prostate cancer may have developed are rarely seen, but
there are some clinical signs and symptoms that can help determine the presence of this cancer. A
neoplasm is a new and abnormal growth of tissue in some part of the body. If the neoplasm is large
enough to encroach on the bladder neck, signs and symptoms of urinary obstruction occur (difficulty
and frequency of urination, urinary retention, and decreased size and force of the urinary stream)
(Pellico, 2013, p. 956). Urinary obstruction could, therefore, potentially indicate prostate cancer.
Another symptom that may be present in the early stages of prostate cancer is hematuria, which is
blood in urine. As the cancer begins to grow, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The level of PSA in the blood is proportional to the total prostatic mass and does not necessarily
indicate malignancy (Pellico, 2013, p. 956). However, if an individual has abnormally high levels of
PSA in the body, it could indicate that the individual has prostate cancer (Pellico, 2013).
The treatment of prostate cancer depends on the stage of the disease and which symptoms a patient
may be experiencing. One type of treatment used is radiation therapy. The two major forms of
radiation therapy are teletherapy and brachytherapy. Teletherapy involves almost seven weeks of
radiation therapy at a prescribed dosage. Alternatively, Brachytherapy uses radioactive seeds that are
implanted while the patient is under anesthesia. In Brachytherapy, [e]ighty to 100 seeds are placed
directly in the prostate, and the patient returns home after the procedure (Pellico, 2013, p. 957).
However, the patient should avoid close contact with infants or a woman who is, or may become
pregnant. If a patient is receiving radiation therapy, the nurse can start implementing safety procedures
to ensure the wellbeing of the patient. The nurse should also answer any questions a family member
may have about the procedure, such as equipment being used, how long the procedure may be,
potential of immobilization, and likelihood that the patient may experience pain. The nurse should
also regularly check the patient s skin, oral mucosa, nutrition status, and

Functional Consequences of Marijuana Use in Adolescents: A Critique of Jacobus, Bava, Cohen Zion,
Mahmood, and Tapert (2009)
ABSTRACT:
Functional Consequences of Marijuana Use in Adolescents: A critical review of Jacobus, Bava, Cohen
Zion, Mahmood, and Tapert (2009) addresses the question of how does the use of marijuana affect an
adolescent s brain functioning, structure and sleep. The article assesses many other studies and
literatures in order to summarize the conclusions respective to these affects of marijuana use. Through
careful review of these studies, the authors were able to determine the affects on an adolescent s brain
functioning, structure and sleep. The results which are presented dictate that Adolescents who use
marijuana have a disadvantaged in their processing speed of attention and learning depicted through
some subtle abnormalities in the brain structure. Consequently, adolescents with have prolonged
marijuana use generally require more brain processing to complete tasks. In addition to the above,
marijuana use in adolescents also affects their ability to sleep. In conclusion, research shows that some
abnormalities associated with marijuana use continue after a month of stopping the use of marijuana,
but many abnormalities may stop after 3 months of quitting. In this

The British Of The Colonial Expansion And Governance
Leveraging its advantages in technology and belief in its moral superiority the British were able to
build and manage this vast empire through networks of trade, political governance and force (Mann
and Roberts, 1991; Lawrence, 1996). The establishment and perpetuation of British legal institutions
was an integral part of the colonial expansion and governance. POGG, therefore, was undoubtedly a
creature designed by the British to exercise direct and indirect imperial control over its overseas
territories (Yusuf, 2014). The success of this approach to expanding and maintaining an empire is
evidenced by the fact that by it was the largest empire in world history. It eventually included large
geographic area of Africa, Asia, North America and the Caribbean with its reach in global trade
including close links with South America and other areas (Lawrence 1996).
Figure 1.2: The British Empire (colored red) as it was in 1921 (The British Empire in 1921, n.d)
This growth of the empire reflects both the transposition of British institutions and adaptation to the
environment of the colonized lands. The British colonial institutional development reflected a policy
which by 1839 focused primarily on constitutional rule and relations with the far flung territories.
Compared to the French Empire, the result was a more decentralized system designed to reduce any
basis for rebellion or discord in the colony (Grier, 1999). The existence and persistence of a signature

Ellen Wefler s Ascending Angel
Sara is a special little girl. At only 9 years old, she s mature beyond her years. More than that, she has
abilities that even she isn t quite aware of. These abilities put her in danger. The archangel Gabriel
knows she must be protected. He, therefore, assigns her a protector; a young boy named Seth.
However, Seth is more than he appears to be as well.
Ascending Angel is a fantasy written by Ellen Wefler. This book is an interesting twist on the classic
theme of good versus evil. It includes dark angels or dangels as they are nicknamed. It also includes
archangels and guardian angels.
Unfortunately, I feel that the way Ms. Wefler addresses this theme and iconic beings may be off
putting to many readers. Thus, this is the first issue that I feel needs attention. Everyone has their own
views on angels, demons, and religion. The author clearly voices her opinions in this story. In the
book, one of the archangels makes it perfectly clear that someone who commits suicide will go to hell.
While I know that there are those out there that hold this opinion, I also know that there are those that
this will greatly offend. The archangels also appear to make decisions and act on their own without
consulting the god that is clearly mentioned in the story. I would suggest those that have clear views
on these issues or religion in general might want to avoid reading Ascending Angel. ... Show more

a chapter devoted to a damned soul. This damned soul is on a mission from Nathan, Lucifer s right

Football is a classic American pastime that has been...
Football is a classic American pastime that has been thrilling spectators for decades. As with all sports,
rules are established in football to avoid potential dangers. One of the most serious risks associated
with football is concussions. A concussion is a hit induced injury that causes any sort of malfunction
in the brain. When the brain does not function properly, a person is exposed to a mental degradation
that can result in a loss of self being and independence. Concussions are becoming the main suspect
for mental challenges in football players as the result of an overlooked modern game. First, the
primary causes of concussions in football are players competing with a history of brain injury, the size
of players, and the speed of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Purdue University studied high school football players and noted that one team member
was hit with an impact of over two hundred and eighty times the force of gravity (Vendantam). Each
of these factors working either independently or creatively can result in a concussion which in turn
can jeopardize the mental stability of its victim. Next, a major effect of concussions is impulsive or
irregular behavior which can be defined by aggression, memory loss, and suicide. Irritability is an
outcome that not only negatively affects the individual, but those around them as well. For example,
Michael (fictitious name) was hit during a high school football game in his freshman year and
instantly experienced many concussion symptoms, including a contentious temper; he and his family
continue to suffer the consequences of his concussion (Kluger 46). Boston University also conducted a
study emphasizing the result of aggression due to concussive blows (Lowry 9). Memory loss is
another detrimental post concussive effect and it can be more easily identified by medical conditions
such as dementia and Alzheimer s disease. For instance, the NFL held a study in September of 2009
and discovered that former NFL players are diagnosed with Alzheimer s or other memory deficiencies
more frequently than those not affiliated with the NFL ( Head ). Thus the NFL released another study
that exposes the startling discovery that NFL veterans are four times more likely to die of

Frederick Henry Discovered Essay
Frederick Henry Discovered In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway uses his idea of the code hero
to introduce us to an amazing character. Hemingway takes his own ideas and conveys them through
Frederic Henry. During World War I Frederic Henry proves to us that war and lost love can change a
strong and willing man. Most men are not willing to change and Frederic Henry realized that in order
for him to survive the many problems he was faced with, he would have to become a more mature
man, love and solider.
Hemingway s code hero is portrayed in most every novel that Hemingway wrote. He takes his main
character and makes him someone that is hard to change and even harder to make realize the situations
around him. His code ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a performance for Jordan (the main character in For Whom the Bell Tolls) because he felt
that since this was his job in the war, people might look on his actions for years to come. He wanted
people to remember his good performance. The code hero does not want to do anything that could
affect what his orders are. Frederic especially wanted to do everything possible in the war that he
could. He must keep himself in good health in order to do his duty and serve in the war (Hemingway,
A Farewell to Arms 63). Although Hemingway tried to portray Henry as a well established man, he
sometimes is confused and not sure of what to do. What Hemingway portrays, in fact, is a good, albeit
a disappointed and disillusioned, man trying to fulfill his various obligations (Nolan 271). He is trying
to make his relationship last since he is in love and he is also trying to take care of his duty s in the
war.
Although the story is told through first person narration, we know that Frederic is a clean shaven man
who is tall in stature and although he is not handsome, he is attractive which makes him fit into
Hemingway s code hero. He shows us that he is a strong man and you realize this by everything he has
to go through during his time of service. He is a strong man by fighting for a country that isn t even is.
By fighting for another country he is trying to discover himself and he wants from life. He is trying to
discover what he truly wants.

Savagery
In William Goldings Lord of the Flies the boy s human nature shifts into savagery without a
civilization to keep them in order. The first character to start the slow descent into savagery is Ralph
who because of his continual battle for power with Jack, uses violence to settle disputes, contributes to
the killing of Simon, and emulates a wild animal to survive. Roger who rejects the idea of civilization
from the start instills fear in younger tribe members, kills Piggy, and plans the brutal sacrifice of
Ralph. Finally, Jack adapts a ruthless way of leading allowing an obsession with hunting as he
segregates his tribe from civilization and leads the hunt for Ralph. The fall towards savagery of these
three characters in a leadership role leads ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While arguing, Ralph hit Jack in the stomach and made him grunt. Then they were facing each other
panting and furious, but unnerved by each other s ferocity. Ralph losses sight of his own civility,
causing him to drastically act out in savagery. Jack does not take the act of defiance lightly. Giving
him yet another reason to have his tribe turn against Ralph. Next, Ralph again loses his civility in a
moment of savagery thus contributing to the killing of Simon. Ralph who is leading his tribe into a
better civilization turns into a savage with his group closely following his lead. They murder Simon,
this being significant because he showed the most civility and was only trying to help when he
approached the group of savages. Instead the, memory of the dance that none of them attended shook
all 4 boys convulsively. All the boys in Ralph s tribe deny their involvement because they can t come
to terms with what they did to one of their friends. Ralph may have stood on the outside and never
stabbed Simon, but he also never attempts to stop the dance. As the leader he should have intervened.
This act has a predominant effect on

Poverty In Memphis
Memphis is notoriously known for its shocking poverty rates, which are higher than the poverty rates
in Shelby County for every category (2015 Memphis Poverty Fact Sheet), and that is not a good thing.
Memphis is also known for its high unemployment rates and its low availability of a skilled workforce
(Does Memphis Have a Fighting Chance), and that is not great, either. Finally, it is well known that
Memphis has one of the highest crime rates in the country (Memphis TN: Crime Data and Crime
Rates), and that just takes the cake. While it is common to focus on these negative aspects about
Memphis, it is not a complete description of this multifaceted city. It is my position that there are
many positive aspects to Memphis that are overlooked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are home to the University of Memphis, a public research university, which has enrolled more than
24,000 students. We are also home to Rhodes College, a private liberal arts college that currently
enrolls over 2,000 students. Memphis is also the most vigorous in the country when it comes to
working towards a better education. In 2005, the Tennessee General Assembly passed the Voluntary
Pre K (VPK) for Tennessee Act, which resulted in a bigger investment towards early childhood
education. In 2009, the Teacher Effectiveness Initiative (TEI) promised to raise money for education
and ensure an effective teacher was put in every class room. In 2013, Tennessee was named the fastest
improving state in the nation per the National Assessment of Educational Progress scores (America s
Most Ambitious Education Reforms). Memphis has been and still is working strenuously towards a
better education system every day.
Finally, it has already been said but bears repeating: Memphis is where Graceland is. It is the final
resting place of The King. It is the single most important place in the entire world. That alone makes
Memphis not only one of the greatest American cities, but one of the greatest cities in the world.

Art Of The 1980s
Art and sports are my topics for this essay. My year is 1980. It was a very important time in the art and
sports world. The biggest moment in sports history in 1980 was the Miracle on Ice This is when the
USA hockey team beat the gold medalist Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had won the gold medal in
six of seven previous winter olympics, and were the favorite to win once more in Lake Placid. The

managed to hold the Soviets off.
The game in the medal round, the United States and the Soviet Union finished the first period with a
score of 2 2. The Soviet Union took the lead 3 2 in the second period. The US team scored two more

  • 2. An Analysis Of Salvador Dali s The Persistence Of Memory 1931 THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY (1931) The Persistence of Memory (1931) was made in 1931 by Salvador Dali, the artwork is 24 x 33 cm oil on canvas painting, and now the artwork is in The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The style of the artwork is surrealistic. The subject matter is a barren landscape with melting clocks draped over unrelated objects, caricature of Dali s face on the ground, plus a rocky headland with sea in the background. The focal point of the artwork is the strange caricature of Dali s profile, complete with eyelashes, tongue and nose. This is because it is so light amongst dark surrounding shadows on the ground. The artist used some surrealist techniques which is Metamorphosis, Rescaling of objects and out of context ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main colours used are blue, yellow, orange and brown. There is also a specific scheme involved in this artwork, which is orange and blue are opposite on the colour wheel, creating visual interest and drama in the composition. Those colour been used to realistically describe forms, they also used to communicate a feeling in this painting. The strongly contrasting colours creates a mysterious shadowy atmosphere in the unusual foreground objects, which is balanced by the lighter landscape areas in the horizon. There are some lines been used in the artwork, which is thin, straight and neat. Dali used very thin and detailed lines particularly on the foreground object such as the numbers on the clocks and the eyelashes on his caricature s eye. He also used some shapes which is definite, geometric, organic and detailed. Dali has created definite and detailed looking shapes. He has contrasted the organic shapes of the boxes on the left hand side of the composition. There is a very strong tonal contrast between the darker foreground, and the lighter background areas of the landscape. This contrast creates the effect of visual interest in the composition. And the surface of the artwork is smooth. Any texture left on this canvas would be implied to represent rougher areas, such as in the rocks and ants. Dali took extreme care to ensure that his brush strokes were smooth and invisible to create a photographic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Schultz in the series Hogan s Heroes, that ran from 1965 till 1971 on TV. Many people, when they hear someone is from Germany or is German, assume that these people are or have relations to the Nazi Regime. But only a few know, that during the World War II (WWII), there were a few German non violent resistance groups. These groups tried to fight the Nazis from within. Just to mention a few, there was the student circle who called themselves the White Rose, another one was the Kreisau Circle, another group was The Swing Kids. But did these non violent movement groups had any effects on the outcome of World War II? Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He reported them to the Gestapo, who later picked also Christopher Probst up, and brought them down to the Gestapo station, where they were questioned, incarcerated, swiftly trialed for high treason and on February 22nd 1943 executed. When the guard came to his (Hans Scholl) cell to take him to the court for sentencing, Hans looked at the prison wall and smiled. He had written the words of Goethe that his father had often repeated: Hold out in defiance of all despotism . (Henderson, 2005 p.42) At Professor Huber s trial, Kurt Huber used the words of Johann Gottlieb Fichte (a German poet 1762 1814) in his defense speech: And thou shalt act as if on thee and on thy deed depended the fate of all Germany, and thou alone must answer for it. The White Rose was maybe not well organized when it came to standing up against the Nazi genocidal policies, but they made their voices to be heard. They inspired other student resistance, which included a riot, street march and graffiti, while their movement was reported internationally, inspiring German POWs to write leaflets that were duplicated and airdropped by their Russian captors. • 4. Salvador Dali Face Of War Essay Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist who drew some of the most gorgeous yet obscure paintings in the world today. The nuances of his work express such great ideas that it is believed one could never perfectly analyze one of his works of art. Sticking to this trend, The Face of War is a somewhat ugly landscape painting with a moving meaning behind every stroke. The desert set painting features a snake inundated, skull like face which was drawn to personify everything that war is. The subtleties in the picture help describe this personification further, as it fleshes out the idea that war is an atrocious and terrifying occurrence that leaves sheer agony in the wake of everything it touches. Those tortured by such an event are left with permanent scars, whether it be in the form of the loss of their home, morals, or even life. The backdrop for the work is a desolate desert which seems to extend completely empty all the way until it meets the horizon. In the forefront of the image, a gaunt face which could quickly be mistake for a skull extends from the top to the bottom of the canvas with a morbidly distraught expression overcoming it. In the orifices where there should be eyes and a mouth, another head appears in each, with this repeating for the openings of that face and so on until what seems to be infinity. While each visage seems to resemble the last, it is notable that as they getter smaller and smaller (sinking deeper into the picture), the faces seem to become more ... Job loss is one of the hardest things to recover from after a recession. Stocks go up, consumers continue with their purchases as some of them release times are getting better. However the economy is a rollercoaster, it goes from being at the top of the track with stocks high, and jobs growing each day to slowly descending to a crash, or in the reference of the rollercoaster descending off of the hill that it climbed to. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Previously society experienced the rise and fall more sporadically, however today, the recessions are so close together that it is becoming more and more difficult to analyze the space in between. In the recessions of 1974 1975 the government leaders, who took the iniative to alert people that in the coming year they would experience a downturn, foresaw the recession. This recession was recorder to be the worst since the 1930 s, for an accumulation of reasons; the largest factor being the American aggression in the Vietnam War . Paul Volcker was a critic on the American dollar and the American s involvement by stating Our failure to face up to the financing of the Vietnam war [was] one key factor in setting up the subsequent inflation . This is a statement that could be used for any recession. Simply by changing the war, and the point in which the quote could be referring to, there is the leading cause to a recession. However, the war would then affect the natural state of the economy. Without the war the government would have used the money elsewhere, would have gone where it needs to go, or would the government find another cause to invest in? The questions of government spending follows a dangerous line of whether the money spent in one place was worth it. Fahrenheit 451 Conformity Quotes According to the novel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Rollo May s quote The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it s conformity is inaccurate because for what these people in the society conformed to, is a coward act on it s own. To go ahead and follow something you don t have knowledge on with the stakes so high and then not give others a voice when they bring viewpoints that differ to what you originally conformed to, is known as a cowardly act. Conforming is just a cover up stuck in ignorance and stubbornness, an excuse for cowardice. Mildred, the main character Guy Montag s wife, equates a coward. (Bradbury page 108) Mildred is a strong candidate of someone who is a coward in the Fahrenheit 451 society. Her husband Montag had recently shown her his life long secret and had asked her the only favor ever, to keep his secret about stealing illegal books. Instead, Mildred showed her ignorance and was stubborn about changing for the right reasons, committing a cowardly act of snitching on Montag, therefore conforming once again to the terrible, lying community they live in. Mildred lives a pathetic, lonely life consisting of her loved ones which only contained televisions. In the quote, while Mildred was running from the house, she was worrying and feeling regretful but not for Montag, for leaving her family behind. Montag on the other hand, differs from Mildred. In 1967, the construction crew had the task of spanning the Tex Wash to connect the freeway between California and Arizona along the Chuckwalla Mountains. She bear s a special gift of bearing, rearing children. The major concern in woman s life is reproductive health and they need enormous attention. Menarche and menopause are the two important phases of the reproductive cycle. The menopause is a time in women s life when the reproductive capacity ceases. In early menopausal transition, estrogen levels are generally normal or even slightly increased; the level of follicle stimulating hormone begins to elevate but is generally in the normal range (Deborah Grady, 2006). • 10. How could the Holocaust have beet prevented COULD THE HOLOCAUST HAVE BEEN PREVENTED? You have probably heard about a period of time, not so long ago, known as The Holocaust. A holocaust, according to Webster s dictionary, is a complete destruction by fire (Stadtler, 1). In Europe, during this period, there was a complete destruction by fire of Jewish homes, Jewish businesses, Jewish neighborhoods, and Jewish people. This destruction was carried out under the direction of Adolf Hitler, during the years 1939 1945, but it actually began earlier, in 1933, when Hitler came to power in Germany. In my opinion, the Holocaust, which was caused by ignorance, could very well have been prevented. There were many powerful nations, such as the United Stated, the USSR, and Britain, whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With Germans of all outlooks desperately seeking solutions for the nation s problems, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party began their climb to power. Hitler was gifted with effective political talents. He offered an explanation for Germany s defeat, and a vision of Germany s future destiny, that played upon the fears, prejudices, and hopes of many Germans. He promised to rebuild Germany s power and restore its prosperity (Isaacman, 16). This won the support of many Germans. Hitler was such an effective speaker that anything he said was believed even if it was not true. Hitler believed that the German people were part of an Aryan race, a superior group that should be kept pure to fulfill their mission of ruling the world. He felt that the Jewish people were sub human, when in actuality they were virtually the same as his Aryan race. Not only did Hitler have a personal hatred toward the Jewish people, but he also blamed them for stabbing Germany in the back after Germany s defeat in World War I. Hitler used them as scapegoats because they were a minority and were easy to put the blame on. Historians agree that the Holocaust resulted from a confluence of various factors in a complex historical situation. That anti Semitism festered throughout the centuries in European culture is centrally important; the Jews were (and are) a minority civilization in a majority environment. The president was Teddy Roosevelt, who enjoyed enormous popularity due to the general happiness of the American people. A thriving industry created many jobs for immigrants and others. A monumental event took place in 1901 when the New York Stock Exchange exceeded 2 million shares for the first time ever (World History Timeline 1900 1901 ). The tycoon J.P. Also around the globe, in the field of psychology, the great Sigmund Freud wrote a book called The Interpretation of Dreams (Magill 14). This book documented Freud s theory that dreams are meaningful and can be understood. Another great mind of that era was Albert Einstein. He came up with his theory of relativity in 1905(Magill 19). Great artists of the world were also creating some of their most brilliant work during this decade. Henri Matisse fought to find the artistic freedom he needed by creating the Fauvist movement in the early 1900 s(Pioch 2). Fauvism led to the larger movement called Expressionism, a term used to describe any art that raises subjective feelings above objective observations (Pioch 4). Georges Rouault was another pioneer of the Expressionist movement; he was a Frenchman who linked the decorative effects of Fauvism in France with the symbolic color of German Expressionism (Pioch 6). Another leading artist of the time period was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German who wanted his art to be a bridge to the future (Pioch 6). These men were very important artists, but ... • 14. Marriage In The Miller s Tale The word Marriage is defined as, The state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (Marrium Webster). Per the tales of Chaucer, marriage is so much more than that. By pulling back the layers of some of his tales, I found that Chaucer had several different views on marriage, what makes it work, and what doesn t. I examined the following tales: The Wife of Bath , The Clerk s Tale , The Merchant s Tale , The Miller s Tale , and The Franklin s Tale . I found that according to Chaucer, the qualities that can make or break a marriage include: control, trust, loyalty, and age or youth. This paper will explain each tale and aim to show how each role is played out in each of those tales. The Wife of Bath is a tale about a knight who rapes a girl and is sentenced to death. Both stories seem to insinuate that age plays a huge role in the success and happiness in a marriage. It shows readers that by being younger, both women have a sort of power over their husbands. As long as they are making their husbands happy, the husbands turn an eye to the things they ought not to be doing. The agreements allow foreign airlines to fly to the U.S. with few, if any, restrictions from the U.S. government and U.S. carriers to fly to foreign countries, also with little or no government restrictions. However, many of the U.S. carriers, such as Delta, American, and United, believe that the Open Skies agreements have some major loopholes, allowing the few subsidized airlines, such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, to fly to the United States, as well as numerous other countries across the globe, at lower operating costs than their non subsidized competition have to pay for the same route. These agreements also allow the practice of fifth freedom operations. Fifth freedom operations permit one airline to fly from their home country to another participating country, drop off and pick up passengers, fly to a second participating country and then fly the whole route in reverse. These routes are known as fifth freedom routes. Since they oppose the idea of fifth freedom routes, Delta, American, and United [the U.S. Three] all want the U.S. government to limit the number of flights these Persian Gulf carriers can operate to the U.S. because they believe that they are losing revenue and customers to this group, known as the Middle East Three. A religious individual may most gloriously carry out his or her own rituals, as a part of his or her cultural identity, but the moment, that person starts to build a wall of separation between the self and the rest of humanity, coaxed by the textual commands of a scripture, the healthy religiousness turns into dangerous fundamentalism, which is a threat to both the self and the society. (Abhijit Naskar). In the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people apart, and hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By focusing on the differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist between different faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same philosophies. However, by focusing on the similarities of different religion, through philosophies, rituals, or teachings, we can then learn how to tear down walls, grow as people, and become cognitive of our joint humanity. With the necessity of ecumenical relations in our community, it serves humans to see the similarities between the faiths that can divide us. • 26. Modeling The Agrometeorological Indices Of The Surface... . Modeling the agrometeorological indices The surface temperature (T0) product was not used because with a lower spatial resolution (1000 km), there were cloud contaminations in some parts of the Minas Gerais state along the years. Instead, T0 was retrieved by residue in the radiation balance after having estimated the atmospheric and surface emissivities (Teixeira et al., 2016a,b). Cleugh et al. (2007) pointed out that the use of instantaneous measurements of the radiometric surface temperature to calculate time averaged fluxes led to errors. They emphasized uncertainties in models which use the MODIS 8 day that is a composite of once daily overpass at ~ 10:30 h local time. In this case, the radiometric temperature is determined under a view angle at the satellite overpass time, using emissivities based on vegetation classes at a 1 km grid that differs from that of the MODIS pixel location. The parameterizations involved in the agrometeorological indices by using the SAFER algorithm in this chapter were done in Brazil with simultaneous satellite and field measurements, under strong contrasting agro ecosystems and thermohydrological conditions throughout different years (Teixeira et al., 2008, 2014a). In addition, acquiring T0 as residue in the radiation balance gives mutual compensation, reducing possible errors in this model input parameter, and as in the upward and downward longwave fluxes, they are self canceling. • 33. Analysis Of A Farewell By Amy Levy A Farewell by Amy Levy reflects the life of an outsider in the 19th century. The speaker portrays the internal battle that Levy faces in a racist and sexist society as being not only Jewish but a strong feminist and lesbian. By living through the speaker Levy is able to express her deepest thoughts and beliefs about contemporary society, and how it has come to affect her ultimately causing her to take her own life. The poem immediately sets a tone of unhappiness that is constant throughout the poem. The speaker describes the setting of the scene: the sad rain falls from Heaven (l.1). The sad rain indicates the darker state of an unjust civilization and how it causes the speaker to become depressed. The word heaven is used to signify that even God looks down on mankind and deems it unfair. • 34. Does Economic Globalization Affect Interstate Military... DOES ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION AFFECT INTERSTATE MILITARY CONFLICT? I Although there is still not agreement on a common definition of this phenomenon, in this paper I will accept the one developed by R.M. Joshi (2009). He identifies, indeed, Economic Globalization as the increasing economic integration and interdependence of national, regional and local economies across the world through an intensification of cross border movement of goods, services, technologies and capital There are two good reasons, in my opinion to accept Prof. Joshi s definition. First, it contains two core point affecting every aspect of that phenomena: Interdependence and Cross border movements. Second, it focuses on the interaction among markets avoiding approximate expression often used in public debate as Global Economy and Global Market that could mislead the reader, where national states still play an important role in Economies destinies, many people are not involved in economy, some markets still operate on a local level, transnational corporations are anyway nationally based and we can not (still) talk about a global labour market. (Aspers and Kohl 2011). II The one among trade and peace is an old story. Yet in the XVII century Montesquieu (1758) wrote Peace is the natural effect of trade. Two nations who traffic with each other become reciprocally dependent . Another giant of that time, Immanuel Kant (1795), seems to share this point of view in his Essay on Perpetual Peace. At ... Howerver, Courbet is also an artist who challenged the traditional painting in the middle of the 19th century. Courbet introduced a new kind of realism, which focused on a rugged depiction of nature and people rather than an idealized and artificial one. Most paintings of the time showed wealthy people, whereas Courbet who was politically involved in socialist causes, applied his political beliefs to art. (Alexander, 1965) Alexander writes that Courbet studied Renaissance and Baroque paintings from Northern Europe as well as from Italy, and that he liked to mix classical visual ideas with the straightforward symbolism of children s drawings and popular prints, and the mechanical realism of the still novel photography. (Alexander: 447) At the time he painted Stone Breakers he made another work called The Wrestlers which shows two very muscular, almost naked men, wrestling in a field. Their bulky shapes make them look almost like mythological heroes from Ancient Greece. The excavation of Assyrian sculpture at the time had a major influence on the look of the naked figures and the position of figures in Courbet s work. Comparing The Scottsboro Trial And Tom Robinson s Trial Comparative Essay There are many basic parallels between the Scottsboro Trial and Tom Robinson s Trial, in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. As Harper Lee grew, up, she was surrounded with news of the Scottsboro Trial, which had a large impact in her novel. But there are also many deeper parallels between these two. Both trials contained African American(s) being accused of rape to a white woman, but Lee had a way to show this through a child s eyes, presumably, her as a young child experiencing the Scottsboro Trials firsthand. Lee wrote her this way, as she is the false accuser in Tom s Trial, as Ruby and Victoria in the Scottsboro Trial. If we delve deeper into Mayella s experiences with her father, and him persuading (or threatening) her to accuse Tom, this can be compared to Victoria and Ruby being bribed by two lawyers to change their testimony. They were both asked to do something they did not want to do, and we can tell this with this quote from To Kill a Mockingbird: Mayella jumped slightly at [Atticus question]. (Lee 246). Atticus had asked a question she was not prepared for, and had to think of an answer, that would satisfy Atticus and her father, but not her. Victoria and Ruby did not want to admit they were spending time with African Americans, as that fact would destroy their images. The Mythology of Puritains In modern American mythology, the Puritans were characterized, by many Americans, as being nothing more than an extreme group of dour religious ascetics who abhorred anything that had to do with humor or sex. This image is fallacious. Furthermore, the Puritans were nothing more than another group of humans who defined their own world with their cultural norms, and values. To better understand the Puritans we have to expunge any mythology surrounding these people, and we have to study them on their own terms through their eyes if at all possible through the written record. The first major myth that must be deconstructed is that the Puritans were sexual prudes. Americans believed that the Puritans considered marriage as nothing more than a necessary evil that was used for only sexual reproduction. Moreover, many Americans believe that the Puritans tried to hide the physical aspect of a relationship as much as possible. This stereotype is false. The Puritans held a very different perspective about marriage and sex. John Cotton, a Puritan minister, stated Women are creatures without which there is no comfortable living for man: it is true of them what is wont to be said of Governments, That bad ones are better than none... for they are a necessary good. If the neoplasm is large enough to encroach on the bladder neck, signs and symptoms of urinary obstruction occur (difficulty and frequency of urination, urinary retention, and decreased size and force of the urinary stream) (Pellico, 2013, p. 956). The British Of The Colonial Expansion And Governance Leveraging its advantages in technology and belief in its moral superiority the British were able to build and manage this vast empire through networks of trade, political governance and force (Mann and Roberts, 1991; Lawrence, 1996). The establishment and perpetuation of British legal institutions was an integral part of the colonial expansion and governance. POGG, therefore, was undoubtedly a creature designed by the British to exercise direct and indirect imperial control over its overseas territories (Yusuf, 2014).
