problems. People lose their identities focusing too much on themselves and chasing after physical
possessions. People have a physical and emotional side but the people in our society neglects its

The majority of people in society today believe in free will and that they can choose what happens
in their own life. Others acknowledge an unknown force that shapes their lives, which they have no
control over. This conflict can be explained by the Determinism theory. Determinism is a
philosophy described as human beings having no free willand therefore, cannot control their own
actions and should not be held accountable. This philosophy is seen in Edith Wharton s short story
Roman Fever by her characters Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley as they argue about a letter and an affair
in the duration of the story. Wharton s main characters are on opposing sides of the philosophy of
determinism, with Mrs. Slade representing determinism and Mrs. Ansley representing free will,

In the novel and the film One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest there are a variety of transformations.
In the film the actors are not portrayed, looks wise, as they are in the book. There are many
characters whose appearances aren t how they are described in the book, like Nurse Ratched and
Chief Bromden. There are also many events and incidents that happen in the book that do not
happen in the movie. The movie includes a character or two that was not mentioned in the book
and characters are portrayed differently than how they are in the book. The biggest difference

The Transatlantic slave trade, a catastrophic event in the 15th to 19th century, affected millions of
Africans and Europeans alike. Slaves were ripped from their homes and sent to the foreign lands,
becoming the fundamental source of labour for mining and agricultural industries in the New
World. Historians Hugh Thomas, Walter Rodney and John Thornton have contradictory beliefs
about the effects of the Transatlantic slave trade on Africa. Thomas argues that the slave trade was
beneficial to Africa, while Rodney argues a more negative position, claiming that the unequal trade
