Introduction
• A poster is a picture or drawing designed for
public display to convey a message on certain
subject.
• Posters are designed to be both eye-catching
and informative.
• It usually has a relevant caption included to
explain the meaning of the picture.

A poster must contain the four basic parts :-
• Caption
• Picture
• Course of action suggested
• Logo ( Official symbol or name of the office
for validity)

Characteristics
• A poster's job is to communicate the
information quickly and efficiently.
• A good poster should be appealing enough to
bring in the target group.
• Posters shouldn’t contain too much
information but should be enough to
convince the readers about what you are
saying is accurate.

• A poster which incorporates color into its
scheme definitely will attract more watchers.
Complete color brochures tend to be a lot
more effective and definitely will have a
much more potent influence.
• Poster should be kept simple as you can,
when nevertheless conveying the point and
must have one strong message.

Making of poster
• Posters can be printed in color or in black and
white. Sometimes, it can be printed without a
picture but only a literate person will be able to
benefit from it.
• It is also made by writing the message or picture
on the walls of busy street, walls of houses or
buildings and also the trunks of trees where
people can easily see it.
• Appropriate posters can also be collected from
agencies and offices according to ones need.

• A good poster should carry only one unit of
message. A poster containing several units of
ideas, messages and symbols may confuse the
people.
• Colored poster is more natural, attractive and
clear.
• A good poster should be of appropriate size,
normally of about 60cm*60cm.The pictures and
letters should be big enough to be seen clearly
from a distance of about five meters.

• The message should be based on the need of
the target people and should confirm the
existing culture of the community concerned.

Technique of using
• Posters are usually displayed on the sidewalls of busy
streets, community centers, halls , corridors of school,
college and other public gathering places.
• Posters should always be displayed at eye level.
• Only a few posters should be displayed at one place at
a time.
• Posters should be changed or replaced frequently to
give new ideas and messages.
• It can also be used for open discussions and is also
used as an aid while teaching.

Advantages
• Pictorial and colored posters are attractive
and effective.
• It can be carried from one place to another
easily and be displayed widely.
• It can be locally prepared in limited number
according to need.
• Even the illiterate people can learn something
by looking at the picture of the poster.

and encourage people to put knowledge into
practice.
• Helps to develop creativity.
• It creates learning environment and motivates
people in open discussion on health
education.

Disadvantages
• It provides only a one-way communication and
might cause misunderstandings or confusions.
• It takes time to print in large scale and colored
posters can get expensive to print.
• Printing services can not be available in rural
places and small towns
• We cannot be if the intended or target group of
people have seen or read the displayed posters.
• It is difficult to evaluate the impact of poster
display.
