2. Poster
• A poster is a visual aid in which a picture or drawing
designed for public display to convey a message on certain
subject.
• Usually it has 4 basic parts:
• 1.Caption
• 2.Picture
• 3.Course of action suggested
• 4. Logo (official symbol or name for validity of the poster)
3. Qualities of an effective poster:
• 1. A good poster should carry only one unit of message.
• 2. Coloured poster is more natural, attractive and clear.
• 3. A good poster should be a appropriate size, normally of about 60
cm. x 60 cm.
• 4. The picture and letters should be big enough to be seen clearly from
a distance of about five meters.
• 5. The message should be based on the need of target people and
should confirm the existing culture of the community concerned.
4. Techniques of using posters
• Posters should be displayed on the sidewalls of busy streets, community
centers, waiting halls or places, corridors, school complex, and other
public gathering places.
• Posters should be displayed at eye level.
• Only few posters should be displayed at one place at a time.
• Posters should be changed or replaced frequently to give new ideas or
messages.
• Posters are also used to open discussion and create interest on the
subject concerned.
• It may be used as an aid while teaching by other method.
5. • Posters can be carried easily from one place to another to distribute
and display widely.
• Pictorial and coloured posters are attractive and effective
• Several posters can be rolled over and tied with strong rubber band or
thread.
• People can learn something from limited number of posters on display.
• Can be locally prepared in limited number to meet immediate and
local health education need.
Advantages
6. • Illiterate people can learn something by looking at the picture of the
poster.
• Serves as reminder of previous learning, and encourage people to put
knowledge into practice.
• Can be used to motivate or to open discussion on health education.
• Helps to develop creativity in the learners by involving them in
designing and making posters.
• Helps to communicate ideas quickly.
• Can be saved for future use.
7. Disadvantages
• Poster provides only one-way communication.
• It may create misunderstanding and confusion.
• Some of the posters may not be self- explanatory.
• Takes time to print in large scale.
• Colour posters are expensive to print.
• Printing service may not be available in rural places and small towns.
• You cannot be sure if the intended group have seen or read the
displayed posters.
• It is difficult to evaluate the impact of poster display.
8. Tips
• * poster made without picture are not useful for illiterates.
• *A perfect poster should be good for both literate and illiterate.
• *Before making poster one should think of the target population,
educational status and local culture.
• * Posters should be pretested before it is actually used for public
display.
• *Size of posters may be 60 x 60 cm or 60 x 90 cm
• 2ft*4ft standard size for indoor presentation
• 4ft* 6ft is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use
