TERMS OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
SOURCES
 Demography : study of statistical description and
analysis of human population.
 Population : summation of all the organism of the
same group in a particular geographical area.
 Population census : a complete population count at a
point in time within a particular area.
 Vital registration : registration on live Births, Deaths,
Fetal deaths, Marriages, and Divorces.
 Sample Survey: representative portion of the
population .
TERM OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA….
 De-jure: counting of people based on their permanent
residence.
 De-facto: counting of persons where they are present
at the time of the census period.
 Sampling frame: a complete list of all the members of
the population that we wish to study.
 Carrying Capacity: maximum sustainable size of a
resident population in a given area.
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
Demographic data is the
study of the population its
static and dynamic
aspects.
 Static aspect (age, sex,
race etc.)
 Dynamic aspect (fertility,
morality,
migration)
TYPES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
Mainly two types:
1) Cross-section data :
 comparing the difference among the variables ;
 observing many variable at a time.
2) Time series data :
 data maybe historical in characters extending over a
period of time consisting of several years.
TYPES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA…..
 On the Basis of Collection:
1) Micro Level data
collected from particular family ,
household or individual.
2) Macro Level data
collected from various household ,
countries as well as the whole world.
SOURCES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
 Population Census like population count.
 Sample Survey like survey of households.
 Vital Registration like births, deaths, marriage.
 Administrative data/records like hospital records,
ministry of education records .
 Government Agencies,
 Historical records such as church records etc.
POPULATION CENSUS
 The main source of demographic data worldwide.
 Census is defined as a complete population count at a
point in time within a specified geographical area.
 A census provides more reliable and accurate data if
properly measure.
 History:
Old Census: Babylonia (3800 B.C.)
Modern Census: England (1841)
USA (1850)
METHODS OF CENSUS TAKING
 mainly two types of methods:
a) De-Jure
b) De-Facto
De-Jure:
 The country of people according to the permanent
place of residence.
Examples: USA, Canada, Egypt etc.
DE-JURE….
Merits:
1) permanent picture of communication.
2) more realistic and useful statistics.
Demerits:
1) people maybe counted twice.
2) information often incomplete or incorrect.
3) omission of some persons.
DE-FACTO
The counting of persons where they are present at the
time of the census period.
Examples: UK, Bangladesh etc.
Merits:
1) less chance for the omission of persons
from the count.
2)less time than de-jure.
Demerits:
1) difficult to obtain information regarding persons
in transit.
2) incorrect picture of the population.
SAMPLE SURVEY
 Sample: representative
portion of the population.
 Sample Survey: A
sample survey is a study
that obtain data from a
subset of the population in
order to estimate population
attributes.
 It doesn’t count whole
population.
SAMPLE SURVEY….
Merits:
1) less time consuming than census.
2) checking the accuracy of the census.
3) studying the dynamics of the population.
Demerits:
1) it doesn’t show the complete picture of the
population.
2) not accurate or reliable as a census.
VITAL REGISTRATION
 Vital registration is a regular and continuous registration
of vital events.
 Its records vital statistics (birth certificate, death
certificate, marriage, divorce, abortion events etc.)
 In developing countries, vital registration systems are
not properly measure because their economical
limitation.
ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS
 Used in almost every country & a common example of
such are health statistics from hospital.
 Their reliability depends upon the completeness of the
administrative recording process.
 Administrative records are very cost effective data
source, that’s why, many developing and less
developing countries not properly counted for their
economical crisis.
ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS…..
Examples includes:
1) health statistics counted from hospital records.
2) employment statistics from employment
exchange services.
3) vital statistics compiled from the civil registration
system.
4) education statistics from enrolment reports of the
ministry of education.
OTHER SOURCES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
 Historical records provide a content for analysis and
causation.
Examples: Church records etc.
 New methods of analysis such as surveillance
(observation) systems and GIS make data make
reliable.
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA SOURCES IN
BANGLADESH
Two types:
1) National
a) Census
b) Sample Survey
c) Demographic Surveillance System
d) Vital Registration
e) Demographic & Health survey
2) International
a) United Nations
b) Population Reference Bureau
c) US Census Bureau-International data base.
NATIONAL SOURCES (CENSUS)
a) Census:
conducted by BBS(Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics).
10 years interval.
first census 1974.
than, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011.
NATIONAL SOURCES
b) Sample Survey
 Various types of sample surveys are conducted in
Bangladesh like-
BDHS-Bangladesh Demographic & Health Survey.
HIES- Household Income & Expenditure Survey.
 BDHS is conducted in every three or four years to serve
as a source of population data.
NATIONAL SOURCES
d) Demographic Surveillance System
 DSS is short.
 started in 1960.
 mainly survey Family Planning, Child Nutrition etc.
NATIONAL SOURCES
d)Vital Registration:
 very weak in Bangladesh.
 not much developed birth and death registration system.
 marriage registration are kept in Union Parishods.
e)Demographic & Health Survey (DHS):
 Include population, health and nutrition.
 reliable data for Bangladesh since 1994.
INTERNATIONAL SOURCES IN
BANGLADESH(BD)
a) United Nations(UN):
Compile global population data including BD.
Including number of population, population
density, growth etc.
b) Population References Bureau(PPB):
Population size & density projections, birth rate, death
rate, fertility, migration rate etc.
INTERNATIONAL SOURCES IN BANGLADESH
US census Bureau-International database:
provide population estimates internationally.
include data on population.
size , fertility measures , mortality & migration.

  • 3. TERMS OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA SOURCES  Demography : study of statistical description and analysis of human population.  Population : summation of all the organism of the same group in a particular geographical area.  Population census : a complete population count at a point in time within a particular area.  Vital registration : registration on live Births, Deaths, Fetal deaths, Marriages, and Divorces.  Sample Survey: representative portion of the population .
  • 4. TERM OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA….  De-jure: counting of people based on their permanent residence.  De-facto: counting of persons where they are present at the time of the census period.  Sampling frame: a complete list of all the members of the population that we wish to study.  Carrying Capacity: maximum sustainable size of a resident population in a given area.
  • 5. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA Demographic data is the study of the population its static and dynamic aspects.  Static aspect (age, sex, race etc.)  Dynamic aspect (fertility, morality, migration)
  • 6. TYPES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA Mainly two types: 1) Cross-section data :  comparing the difference among the variables ;  observing many variable at a time. 2) Time series data :  data maybe historical in characters extending over a period of time consisting of several years.
  • 7. TYPES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA…..  On the Basis of Collection: 1) Micro Level data collected from particular family , household or individual. 2) Macro Level data collected from various household , countries as well as the whole world.
  • 8. SOURCES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA  Population Census like population count.  Sample Survey like survey of households.  Vital Registration like births, deaths, marriage.  Administrative data/records like hospital records, ministry of education records .  Government Agencies,  Historical records such as church records etc.
  • 9. POPULATION CENSUS  The main source of demographic data worldwide.  Census is defined as a complete population count at a point in time within a specified geographical area.  A census provides more reliable and accurate data if properly measure.  History: Old Census: Babylonia (3800 B.C.) Modern Census: England (1841) USA (1850)
  • 10. METHODS OF CENSUS TAKING  mainly two types of methods: a) De-Jure b) De-Facto De-Jure:  The country of people according to the permanent place of residence. Examples: USA, Canada, Egypt etc.
  • 11. DE-JURE…. Merits: 1) permanent picture of communication. 2) more realistic and useful statistics. Demerits: 1) people maybe counted twice. 2) information often incomplete or incorrect. 3) omission of some persons.
  • 12. DE-FACTO The counting of persons where they are present at the time of the census period. Examples: UK, Bangladesh etc. Merits: 1) less chance for the omission of persons from the count. 2)less time than de-jure. Demerits: 1) difficult to obtain information regarding persons in transit. 2) incorrect picture of the population.
  • 13. SAMPLE SURVEY  Sample: representative portion of the population.  Sample Survey: A sample survey is a study that obtain data from a subset of the population in order to estimate population attributes.  It doesn’t count whole population.
  • 14. SAMPLE SURVEY…. Merits: 1) less time consuming than census. 2) checking the accuracy of the census. 3) studying the dynamics of the population. Demerits: 1) it doesn’t show the complete picture of the population. 2) not accurate or reliable as a census.
  • 15. VITAL REGISTRATION  Vital registration is a regular and continuous registration of vital events.  Its records vital statistics (birth certificate, death certificate, marriage, divorce, abortion events etc.)  In developing countries, vital registration systems are not properly measure because their economical limitation.
  • 16. ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS  Used in almost every country & a common example of such are health statistics from hospital.  Their reliability depends upon the completeness of the administrative recording process.  Administrative records are very cost effective data source, that’s why, many developing and less developing countries not properly counted for their economical crisis.

Examples includes: 1) health statistics counted from hospital records. 2) employment statistics from employment exchange services. 3) vital statistics compiled from the civil registration system. 4) education statistics from enrolment reports of the ministry of education.
  • 18. OTHER SOURCES OF DEMOGRAPHIC DATA  Historical records provide a content for analysis and causation. Examples: Church records etc.  New methods of analysis such as surveillance (observation) systems and GIS make data make reliable.
  • 19. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA SOURCES IN BANGLADESH Two types: 1) National a) Census b) Sample Survey c) Demographic Surveillance System d) Vital Registration e) Demographic & Health survey 2) International a) United Nations b) Population Reference Bureau c) US Census Bureau-International data base.
  • 20. NATIONAL SOURCES (CENSUS) a) Census: conducted by BBS(Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics). 10 years interval. first census 1974. than, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011.

NATIONAL SOURCES d)Vital Registration:  very weak in Bangladesh.  not much developed birth and death registration system.  marriage registration are kept in Union Parishods. e)Demographic & Health Survey (DHS):  Include population, health and nutrition.  reliable data for Bangladesh since 1994.
  • 24. INTERNATIONAL SOURCES IN BANGLADESH(BD) a) United Nations(UN): Compile global population data including BD. Including number of population, population density, growth etc. b) Population References Bureau(PPB): Population size & density projections, birth rate, death rate, fertility, migration rate etc.
  • 25. INTERNATIONAL SOURCES IN BANGLADESH US census Bureau-International database: provide population estimates internationally. include data on population. size , fertility measures , mortality & migration.
