8. Introduction
Statistics is a branch of
mathematics dealing with data
collection, organization,
analysis, interpretation and
presentation
Statistics
It is the study in which spatial
variations in the distribution,
composition, migration, and
growth of populations are
related to the nature of places.
Population Geography
The study of statistics
such as births, deaths,
income, or the incidence
of disease, which
illustrate the changing
structure of human
populations
Demography
Population data, population
census, sample survey and
their types, methods,
development history,
importance, information’s are
generally discussed in several
discipline.
9. Population Data
The information in different
aspects like sex ratio, marital
status, literacy etc of a particular
population is called the
Population Data.
Population Data
A population data set contains all
members of a specified group
(the entire list of possible data
values).

15. Population Census
Population Census
A population census is the total
process of collecting, compiling,
evaluating, analyzing and
publishing or otherwise publish
demographic, economic and
social data pertaining, at a
specified time, to all persons in
a country or in a well delimited
part of a country. It is
undertaken in 10 years interval.
17. Conditions of Population
Census
Conditions
of
Population
Census
It must be conducted by
the government of the
state or country.
It must be conducted
at the same time
(simultaneously)
throughout the
country.
It must involve regular
counting at specific
time intervals at an
interval of 10 years
It must involve the
physical counting of
people rather than by
proxy.
18. Types of Population Census
Types of Population Census
De facto Method De Jure Method
This is the type of population census
which involves the counting of only
those who are present physically
during census. In Family –A , only
those that are present physically are
seen and counted. Example:
This is the type of population census
which involves the counting of
people who have been permanent
residents of a specific area. It does
not matter whether the person is
present or not. Example: Bangladesh

Disadvantages
Most communities are inaccessible
due to mountains, valleys, hills and
rivers surrounding them. This makes
conducting the census difficult.
Geographical Barriers:
Trained Personnel like
demographers are not easily
available.
Lack of Trained Personnel:
This is a major problem in some
areas during census. Muslim women
that are in Purdah are not to be
seen by men, such people might not
be counted during this process.
Religious Beliefs:
A lot of money is required to
conduct population census.
High Cost:
24. Sample Survey
A sample survey is a study
that obtains data from a
subset of a population, in
order to estimate population
attributes
Sample Survey
Sample is the selection of
population or item, who
represents the whole
population or a particular
part of it

25. Types of Sample Survey
Sampl
e
Survey
A random sample is a subset of a
statistical population in which
each member of the subset has
an equal probability of being
chosen.
Random Sample Survey
Systematic sampling is a type of
probability sampling method in
which sample members from a
larger population are selected
according to a random starting
point and a fixed, periodic
interval.
Systematic Sample Survey
Cluster sample survey refers to a
type of sampling method, in
which total population divides
into separate groups called
cluster.
Cluster Sample Survey
Stratified sample survey refers to
a type of sampling method, in
which total population divides
into separate groups called
strata.
Stratified Sample Survey

26. Advantage and Disadvantage of Sample
Survey
Advantages
Low cost of sampling
Less time consuming
in sampling
Scope of sampling is

Suitable in limited
resources
Disadvantages

representative sample.

registration ,statistical recording and

32. Conclusion
This presentation gives the concept about sources of data, population data, its
types and characteristics. Population census is an important statistical
observation which gives us idea and information about the population of a
country. Such as peoples socio economic activities, their fertility, educational
characteristics, cultural activities etc. Sample survey is also an important
survey., Because it has some interesting method of collecting data from a
particular population. Population geography discuses the population data,
population census, sample survey, vital registration, migration etc.
