INTRODUCTION
A word polymer is a combination of two Greek words, poly means
many and meros means parts or unit.
A polymers is a large molecule of which is formed by repeated
linking of the small molecules called “monomers”.
More monomer molecules joined in units of long polymer.
n(CH2=CH2) (-CH2-CH2-)n
ETHYLENE POLYETHYLENE
Classification of Polymer
Classification Based on Structure
Classification Based on Source
Classification Based on Molecular force
Classification Based on Mode of Polymerization
1. Classification Based on Structure
Linear polymers : These polymers consist of long and straight chains.
E.g.: Polyvinyl chloride, polythene etc.
2. Branched Chain polymers: These polymers contain linear
chains having some branches
3. Cross linked polymers (Network polymers):
These are usually formed from bi-functional or tri-functional
monomers and contain strong covalent bonds between
various polymers.
E.g: Melamine, Bakelite ,
Classification Based on Source
• Natural Polymer- These are obtained from Plants and
Animals
Exa- Proteins, Cellulose, Starch
2. Synthetic Polymer- These are man made polymer
Exa- Polythene, Nylon etc
3. Semi-synthetics Polymer- Obtained by modification
natural polymer by artificial means.
Exa- Cellulose Acetate, Cellulose nitrate
Classification Based on Molecular Force
Classification based on Mode of Polymerization
