On National Teacher Day, meet the 2024-25 Kenan Fellows
B. Sc Sem IV Hydrogen Bonding
1. SHRI. GOVINDRAO MUNGHATE COLLEGE,
KURKHEDA
Class- B.sc (SEM-I) Paper- I Unit- IV
Topic- Hydrogen bonding
Welcome To Dr.Ganesh
Online e-Classroom
2. HYDROGEN BONDING
When hydrogen is bonded to a highly
electronegative atom (such as nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine)
the bonding electron pair is drawn towards the
electronegative atom
3. Definition
The force of attraction which binds hydrogen atom of one molecule
with highly electronegative atom (F, O, N etc ) of another molecule
of the same substance is called as Hydrogen Binding.
• Usually hydrogen bond is represented by Dotted line (…….)
• Covalent bond is represented by Solid line (---------)
Example- 1. HF Molecule
4. Conditions For H-Bonding
• Hydrogen atom (H) Should be linked to a highly electronegative atom
such as F, O, N etc
• The size of electronegative atom should be small.
5. Types of H- Bonding
• Two Types –
1. Intermolecular H-Bonding
2. Intramolecular H- Bonding
6. Intermolecular H- bonding
• The hydrogen bond that exists between atom of two or more molecules of
same substance is called Intermolecular Hydrogen Bond
• Some example of such type of bonding are HF, H2O, NH3, ROH etc
