Pointillism is a style of art using small dots of pure color that are applied in patterns to form an image. The French artist Georges Seurat founded the Pointillism movement in the 1880s, though critics later named it Pointillism. Seurat's most famous work, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, took two years to complete and contains over 3 million dots applied individually. The French artist Paul Signac was also prominent in the Pointillism style and known for his coastal scenes of the French coast.
