Op Art
Op Art
A form of art that gives the
illusion of movement through
the precise use of pattern and
color.
Zebra, created in the 1930s, is considered to be
one of the earliest examples of 'op art'.
Op Art was an art movement that became popular
in the United States and Europe in the mid-1960s.
Victor Vasarely is a french painter, considered
to be one of the first Op Art artists.
He first worked as a commercial artist and
graphic designer.
At first he explored his new ideas in black and
white only.
Soon he began exploring his ideas in color.
Exploiting optical illusions, he juxtaposed colors
so that they appeared to vibrate.
He developed a
technique that
made parts of his
geometric images
seem to bulge
forward from their
surface ground,
or background,
area.
Vasarely's
paintings and
graphic art
reached the
peak of their
popularity and
influence in
the 1960s
and 70s.
